Look for the new road signs in Lehigh Township. At places approved by the township supervisors, two road signs have been placed around the township to raise awareness of the Lehigh Township Historical Centre and St. Paul's Schoolhouse. At St. Paul's Schoolhouse on Almond Road, there is a historical marker which was installed in 2011 to the left of the historic schoolhouse. The 1865 schoolhouse was restored by the Lehigh Township Historical Society and was opened as a museum in 2010. The historical marker, green with white lettering, describes its historical significance in the Township. The new road sign, installed below it, displays a picture of the schoolhouse and visitor information: the phone number to reach the Lehigh Township Historical Society. There is a road sign near the LT Historical Centre with its phone number and at some sites, there is a post with the two signs attached. Thanks to the sponsors of these attractive signs for Lehigh Township. With these two newly installed signs, attention will be drawn to these two important buildings in the township and will give important information for visitors to reach the society for any tour, event, meeting, etc. Both buildings are closed for the regular open house visits in the winter months but you can make a special appointment by calling 610-440-0151.

Eight Oaks Craft Distillers Recognized by Chamber as Business of the Month submitted by THE CHAMBER
The Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize Eight Oaks Craft Distillers as the January 2017 Business of the Month. Eight Oaks Craft Distillers has been producing spirits since January 2016. In addition, their tasting room offers craft cocktails, bottle sales, light snacks, tours, tastings, special events and private parties. Eight Oaks is a farm distillery raising their own non-gmo grains such as wheat, rye, barley and corn. They craft those grains into Rye Whiskey,Vodka, Gin and Bourbon. They also source local apples for their applejack and produce rum as well. Eight Oaks staff, Chad Butters, Jesse Tyahla, lead distiller Logan Snyder and general manager Carly Butters and the rest of the Eight Oaks crew have made quite the name for themselves in not only their geographical community but in the entire Lehigh Valley and craft distillers community. In addition to their New Tripoli location, they are also featured in the Allentown Fairgrounds Farmers Market and Reading Terminal Market, as well as seasonal farmers markets throughout the region. In 2016 they were awarded the silver medal for grain-to-glass Vodka at
the American Distilling Institute’s International Spirits Competition. Butters, a military veteran, said the idea came from his desire to have a family business that allowed him time with his family and friends, he was ready for a second career.“This project started because my wife and I were looking for a career after military retirement,” Butters said.“We made a list of all the things we thought it would take to make us exceptionally happy. The list included starting a family business, working together with friends and family every day, being home more often at night, do something with agriculture and having fun. That was all we wanted.” One year into the business, Butters knows that they found the right career,“It is the perfect fit for us. We truly love what we do” he said. Future plans include continuing to be a strong part of the community while creating a fantastic product, according to Butters.“We are excited to be the regions choice for distilled spirits. We will continue to grow our own grains, craft exceptional quality spirits using traditional techniques and supporting our community,” he said. -Entire House Remodeling Debris -Roofing Materials -Storm Debris -Lawn and Garden Clean-Up -Estate Clean Outs -Garage and Basement Clearing

Er hot’s immer uff em Schpeicher gelosst bei der Memm im Bett. another woman to do the housework and to take care of the other children and also the new baby. The mother remained upstairs for over a week. An old adage always was, “One should not get up out of bed until the ninth day after delivering a child.” When it was time for the mother to get out of bed and come down to the kitchen and bring the baby with her, the other children were always happy. There was ,however, an old belief that one must first carry the new baby up steps, so this new baby must be carried up the garret stairs before they
January 10, 1963 One time of the year that the newspaper people and all other people watch for a baby to be born is right after the clock strikes 12 and it is New Year’s. The first child that is born in our Lehigh Valley every year gets his picture in the newspaper and a big thing is made over this baby for it being first in the new year. This reminds us of the times when babies were not born in hospitals. Years ago, the doctor brought the baby in his black satchel. He always left it upstairs with the mother in her bed. Dad always gave in to the necessity and brought in

were allowed to take it down to the kitchen. The new babies were also not taken out on the road so soon like nowadays. There was always an old belief that one should not take the baby away from home before it would be baptized. So one day the pastor came to the house and baptized the baby. The baby now was formally given a name. The pastor asked for a small bowl to put in a little baptismal water. This baptismal water was saved and when the pastor left, the mother gave the baby a teaspoonful of this water to drink. This was for good luck and also that the child remain healthy and grow. The [baby’s] little hair grew but the mother did not allow the hair cut off until the baby was a year old. That was also for good luck. The day when the child became a year old, he was sat on the floor, and a bottle, a pocketbook and a book was placed against the child. They then watched for which of the three things the child went. If he went for the bottle, then he will be a heavy drinker; when he went for the book, then he will become well educated; and when he went for the pocketbook, he will become very rich. What did the mother do to keep the baby quiet and content when it sat in the child’s chair the time
that the mother was working? Eve Weiss from Nazareth told us once that the women would have made an apple suckler for the child. That is a quartered apple segment bound in a white cloth and given to the child to suck on. That gave the child something to do to pass the time and the juice what he sucked out was also good and healthy. This is why the new year’s baby did not get his picture in the newspaper years back. [There were always a lot of old beliefs and superstitions among the rural Dutch and in this article Florence lists several relating to childbirth. And now we also know why the old country doctors carried that black satchel with them on house calls! I think we can all see why that folkway of placing a one year old child on the floor and have him choose between a bottle, a pocketbook or a [text] book fell into disuse. Let us each ponder this a bit regarding what choice we may have made when we were that one year old. Am I rich? No! Am I well educated? No! Oh no! That only leaves one other option!!! I think the tradition may have survived if they had given a few more choices to the child!]

Snow Blower Safety Tips submitted by DEBBI MAYSTER
With winter snows arriving, homeowners, contractors, and business owners will again rely on their snow blowers to clear driveways and walks. The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute is offering tips for safe and correct use of snow blowers. “Your indispensable winter friend, the snow blower is ready to be powered up and it’s important to keep safety in mind,” says OPEI President and CEO Kris Kiser. “Be sure to prepare and consider the following tips before you use your equipment: PREPARE BEFORE IT SNOWS Review your owner’s manual and check your equipment. Check your owner’s manual for safe handling procedures from your manufacturer. If you forgot to drain the fuel last winter before storing your snow blower, drain the tank now. Adjust any cables. Check the auger (the snow blower should always be completely powered off when you are checking the equipment). Know how to operate the controls. You should be able to shut off your equipment quickly. Prepare your fuel and handle it properly. It’s important to have the right fuel on hand for your snow blower – movement and fuel availability may be limited during a snowstorm. Be sure to use the correct fuel, as recommended by your equipment’s manufacturer (for more information on fueling properly see www.LookBeforeYouPump.com). Fill

up the fuel tank outside before you start the engine and while the engine is cold. Never add fuel to a running or hot engine. Be sure to clean the area you intend to clear with your equipment. Snow can sometimes hide objects that if run over by a snow blower, may harm the machine or people. Doormats, hoses, balls, toys, boards, wires, and other debris should be removed from the areas you intend to clear. Dress appropriately. Wear safety glasses and footwear that can handle slippery surfaces. OPERATE YOUR EQUIPMENT SAFELY Key Safety Tip: Never put your hands inside the auger or chute. Use a clean-out tool (or stick) to unclog snow or debris from your snow blower.Your hands should never go inside the auger or chute. Make sure the snow blower is in the off position before addressing any clogs. Turn off your snow blower if you need to clear a clog. If you need to remove debris or unclog snow, always turn off your snow blower. Wait for all moving parts to come to a complete stop before clearing any clogs or debris. Only use your snow blower in visible conditions. Never operate the snow blower without good visibility or light. Aim your snow blower with care. Never throw

snow toward people or cars. Do not allow anyone to stand in front of your snow blower. Keep children or pets away from your snow blower when it is operating. Use extreme caution on slopes and hills.
