From the Publisher’s Desk

Joe Korba It finally feels like winter out there and I hear we might be getting some snow this weekend, which is a shame because I was planning on heading to Philly for a concert with some friends on Saturday. I hope it holds off. I especially hope that we don’t get any storms on Gazette delivery days like it seemed would happen every issue last year and the year before. I guess I can’t complain. We have been pretty lucky with the weather this season. As always, enjoy this edition of the Gazette! On the Cover: Passenger steam train passing through the Gap on Sunday, August 23, 2015.

Meet The Staff

Our coupon special edition should probably promote thrifty spending, but it’s time to share the guilt—what was your last big spending splurge? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher

Catherine Stroh, Publishing Assistant

My wife and I bought a house. It’s kind My last big splurge was buying three of scary, but mostly awesome. Talk liquid lipsticks for $20 a piece ... did I need them? Technically, no. But they’re about a spending splurge!

Danielle Tepper, Editor

I haven’t actually bought it yet, but I’m shopping around for an iMac desktop for personal use. Prior to that, I spent quite a bit while redecorating my bedroom in the fall. Paint, new shelves, a new wall mirror, new curtains ... it adds up!

Christine Stroh, Account Executive

By far, the biggest splurge in my recent history was my ticket for the Neil Diamond concert last March at the PP&L Arena. Despite the practically blizzard conditions endured to and from the venue, it was well worth the price!

such an amazing product that I do not regret it one bit. My life is better with them in it! Yes, I have a problem.

Tony Pisco, Art Director

I’m not much of a spender, so it’s hard for me to come up with anything but I guess I’ll go with my car. Although I did only get that because my old car was breaking down too much.

Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager

My last big spending splurge was for Christmas. I had set a dollar limit for each adult and grandchild early in the season. Well, as time got closer, the dollar limit almost tripled for each person. Bad big spending splurge = awesome family holiday.

Fall-Winter 2015 Mini Movie Reviews

Just in case you missed my column in our Thanksgiving issue, allow me to elaborate a bit on my movie-going habits ... I go to the movies pretty often, usually once a weekend unless there’s absolutely nothing I want to see or I have other plans. I’ve had this habit for the past few years now, always asking around for friends to join me, but it’s rare that people want to spend the money anymore as ticket prices climb ever higher. Or they only want to go when it’s raining. Or only when there’s something mind-blowingly awesome out, worthy of a big screen night out. Not me. I’ll see anything. With anyone. Or with no one. Hell, I go alone more often than not these days. It doesn’t bother me, in fact, it’s become my me time: I plop down in a practically empty theater (because I stick to Sundays or weeknights), stretch my legs, enjoy my snack, and revel in a couple hours of peace and quiet―relatively speaking. So, with all that movie-going, I can usually tell you what’s good and what to avoid. I get texts from long-distance friends asking for my opinions and suggestions. And I’ve got ‘em―so I’ve started to put that to good use for POP by giving you all a run-down of what I’ve seen recently, in order of release date ...

MOCKINGJAY PART 2 | 11/20/15

Key Players: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth

This was inevitable, as I’ve been following the Games since their first trek to the big screen in 2012. I was a huge fan of the books and eager to see them come to life on the silver screen. The first film was a masterpiece, beautifully true to the book, and wonderfully casted. Same for Catching Fire, my favorite of the three. Mockingjay Part 1 was plodding and slow and started to falter, however, as I sort of expected. Mockingjay is admittedly my least favorite

townandcountrygazette.com | January 21, 2016

book in the literary trilogy turned film tetralogy, as I felt the climax was glossed over and wrapped up far too lazily to give justice to the story as a whole. I wondered if they would be able to rectify that in the film version. So, my sister and I continued our tradition of heading to the theater on her first night home for her Thanksgiving break from college and went to witness the “epic conclusion” of the saga that catapulted J.Law into superstardom. It just didn’t feel so epic. It felt harried and disorganized, plotless and tired. Jennifer Lawrence lacked the conviction and determination that Katniss displayed so indignantly in the first installment. It was, by most counts, a disappointment ... but one you have to see to give yourself closure. See it? If successfully overthrowing corrupt government appeals to you or if you’ve ever wanted to share a pizza and a bottle of wine with Jen.

THE NIGHT BEFORE | 11/20/15 Key Players: Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anthony Mackie

This looked juuuust dumb enough to be funny. And it was, but just barely. I went by myself hoping for a few good laughs (but mostly because I adore JGL) and found a stereotypical plot one might expect when viewing anything where Seth Rogen is a lead actor. The supposed-to-be-funniest scene featured his character doped up on a stocking’s worth of drugs and freaking out in the middle of Christmas Eve mass. The premise―three friends who are getting a little too old for this stuff vow to bring an epic end to their Night Before (Christmas) routine of all-night partying before Santa’s arrival―is weak as hell and Entertainment Weekly managed to sum it up in a chestnut shell: “A silly, stoned Turducken of a movie, stuffed with scattershot bro jokes and stacked with so many cameos (Mindy Kaling, Miley Cyrus, Tracy Jordan, Lizzy Caplan, Ilana Glazer, James Franco’s penis) that there’s hardly room for the main stars to do more than race from scene to scene in a blur of reindeer sweaters, wacky slapstick, and weed smoke.” See it? Only if you’re really, really bored. Or high.

VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN | 11/25/15 Key Players: James McAvoy, Daniel Radcliffe

This looked interesting enough for a solo Sunday evening, so I went. If the leads were lesser liked actors, I probably would’ve skipped it, but I love

townandcountrygazette.com | January 21, 2016

Dan from his Potter days and I would seriously sit and listen to James do a dramatic reading of an encyclopedia. I know there have been a thousand and one variations of the Frankenstein story, but this one promised to tackle a different angle, that of the mad scientist’s seen-butseldom-heard assistant, Igor. The build-up was rather fascinating, as they told the tale of Igor’s beginnings as a nameless freak show attraction and slowly unraveled the threads of Victor’s obsessive need to create life from death (and why). But the climax―the creation of “the monster”― fell so tragically flat that it practically upended the entire thing. It received middling reviews (only a C+ from my Bible, Entertainment Weekly) most likely for this reason. Igor’s sentiment that people won’t remember Frankenstein the man, only the monster, is sadly spot-on and yet, it was hard to see the connections between the story being told and the infamous legend that’s become so prevalent in today’s pop culture. But I suppose that’s what was supposed to make it different? See it? If you’re a fan of the stars, monsters, or origin stories.

SISTERS | 12/18/15

Key Players: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler

I saw this, predictably, with my sister when she got home from college for her winter break. I’ve never been a huge fan of the Fey-Poehler comedy duo, as I don’t watch SNL and have never really followed their careers. Mean Girls is a classic, but I tend to not like their brand of humor. I recently binge-watched Parks & Rec and was sort of indifferent about it, whereas I know there are people who positively love it. This was decent, however. The plot is basically one big party and the dialogue was biting and hilarious. I think they could’ve done better with casting a cuter guy as the romantic interest for Poehler and they severely under-utilized their friends’ cameos (I was hoping to see way more of Kate McKinnon). The climactic “problem” was a bit of a contrived plot point and the two sisters were, predictably, supposed to be polar opposites of each other―but for all of the trite details, the meat of the movie was actually a lot

Page 19

of fun. See it? If you’re fans of Fey, Poehler, other SNLers, or just watching a bunch of middle-aged has-beens get rip-roaring drunk.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS | 12/18/15 Key Players: Harrison Ford, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver

Saved the best for last! I, like apparently everyone else on the planet, couldn’t wait to see the seventh installment of this brilliant franchise. Considering I didn’t even exist yet at the time Luke Skywalker was first introduced, I had my first experience with George Lucas’ galaxy far far away in middle school. My mother, always trying to convince me to watch old “classics,” plopped me in front of A New Hope one night. I fell in love, completed the trilogy, and made my best friend down the street watch them too. She joined me in a new obsession―we were just two New Jersey 7th graders suddenly infatuated with a boy played by an actor who was now 50 years old in real life. We even had a sleepover specifically so we could watch the entire trilogy―all 6.5 hours―in one night together, complete with chips and ice cream and a whole plethora of junk to keep us up later than we’d ever been allowed before. All of this is to illustrate a rather simple fact―yes, I am a Star Wars fan. I’m not new to this space spectacle and I was genuinely excited, though admittedly a bit apprehensive, to see a new chapter with new faces reawaken our love for the saga. And that’s exactly what director J.J. Abrams did. There are a lot of parallels between episodes 4 and 7, but they were done smartly and tastefully. Boss man Joe Korba described it best, saying he revamped enough of the story to lure in a brand new audience while reminding fans of the originals what they loved most about the story that ended 32 years ago. It felt like we were truly starting a new journey while also experiencing an insane nostalgia fix―anyone else get chills at the first appearance of the opening crawl or maybe even a little teary-eyed at Han and Chewie’s iconic entrance? No? Just me? Liars. I could probably write an entire column on this movie alone, from the new characters played by incredible mostly-unknown-until-now actors, the special effects, the subtle choices in design and plot―but I’ll refrain from doing that here. Moral of the story is … IT WAS GOOD. See it? Duh. New fans or old, you’ll probably love it.

YouTuber J. R. Gilkinson’s 2013 encounter with an adorable baby sea lion is making new waves as it was recently rediscovered and re-shared by TheDodo.com January 11. The original clip has over 8 million views and has been steadily growing over the past couple of weeks. The video shows a spunky sea lion swimming alongside Gilkinson’s boat, then climbing aboard and making himself at home, which included a cuddle with Gilkinson himself. While undeniably adorable, the video has raised a few questions from concerned viewers, wondering why the pup was on his own and what happened to him when his visit came to an end. Gilkinson assured folks via YouTube comment which read, “After his nap for over an hour, I had to encourage him to get back in the water, but I dropped him off at the buoy area where there are a lot of sea lions that hang out. One popped up in the same area that he jumped in.” Good to know the little guy wasn’t left alone! The full video can be found on YouTube at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=YNPrUWXVlAY.

LCCC Receives Special Emergency Reserve Fund For Veterans

Submitted by DENISE REIFINGER Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) has received a $50,000 grant to fund a new Veterans/ Reservist’s Special Emergency Reserve Fund (V-SERF) from the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation. The grant provides $10,000 over five years. This will establish a dedicated emergency grant fund for veterans at LCCC in the event of a catastrophic personal incident or last minute changes that cannot be handled by the large and slow-moving government-based veterans support program. The V-SERF fund will allow veterans to handle textbook purchases and other pertinent education expenses in the case of an emergency or late, unaccommodated change without the need to repay the V-SERF fund. Since many veterans have at least some funding going into the year, LCCC anticipates the V-SERF fund should be able to assist at least 20 students each year.

Examples of emergency situations include delays in veteran’s benefits or personal issues such as house fire, medical issues, loss of materials and books due to unforeseen or traumatic circumstances, changes in financial status, and even students left homeless. Veterans may apply for grants up to $1,000 once per academic year. For additional information about this multi-year impact grant, contact LCCC’s Office of Returning Adult and Veteran Affairs at 610-799-1545.

But I wasalmost starved, and decided I could stretch it and took agood chew of tobacco; then there were only six anymore. Sixresolutions, good and sound, these I still had now, and so manybitters that I was just about fence corner weak (idiom?). Touch of Dutch Continued from Page 30 I think itwill keep one plenty busy, that he does not break any of them. And I havealready had experience with worthless stock, yet I boughtHumbug [fraud] Gold Stock, Then there were only four anymore. And when Ihitched up the team to go home and jumped up on the wagon, it waswithout feeding and watering the horses, so there were only three anymore. Threeresolutions, what a shame, and somewhat liquored up; then I beatthe horses yet, so there were only two anymore. Well withtwo resolutions a man cannot go wrong, only I thinkhe must ‘stick’ to them like a poultice [see note] or skin rash. So I was notyet completely discouraged, but then it did not matter, for I hadlied to Polly and then I only had one anymore. Then whenPolly scolded me

I went out to the stable and had notkissed her first, so now my resolutions are gone. This NewYear ‘leaf’ looks evil, but I will write this here and now: Whoeverwants to make resolutions, Should do it on his knees! [A poulticeor plaster is a soft moist compound containing herbal remedies, usually heated, spread on a cloth, and then placed over the skin to treat an aching, inflamed,or painful part of the body. It can also be used on wounds such as cuts. Poulticeshave been used for thousands of years in traditional healing practices allaround the world, and many older residents, myself included, will remember theirusage in our region. Uses of poulticescan be seen to be system specific: the mustard plaster for the respiratorysystem (COPD problems); the castor oil pack (No, not the dreaded internal use for you knowwhat!) for the digestive system, reproductive system and for the integration ofthe lymphatic, endocrine and nervous systems; and the comfrey poultice for the muscular-skeletaland integumentary systems (Skin, hair and nails). Traditions Of Hanover Wins 2016 Best Of Assisted Living Award Submitted by KRISTY MUENZ Traditions of Hanover Independent Living in Bethlehem is proud to announce their selection as a 2016 Best of Assisted Living Award Winner on SeniorAdvisor.com, the largest ratings and reviews site for senior care and services in North America. This is the third year in a row that Traditions of Hanover has received this outstanding achievement. Winners of the SeniorAdvisor.com Best of 2016 Awards represent the top tier of in-home care, assisted living, and other senior living providers, based on the online reviews written by seniors and their families. This exclusive designation places the winners in the top one percent of senior care providers according to those who matter most—the consumers. The annual SeniorAdvisor.com Best of Awards celebrates the best of the best in senior living and home care across the United States and Canada. The award is only given to communities and agencies that have received outstanding online feedback from their families through the SeniorAdvisor.com site. Traditions of Hanover regularly receives highly positive reviews from their families like this one: “It is easy to rate Traditions with 5 stars because the environment has been nothing but uplifting. It was difficult to get our 90-year-old mother to agree to a move but the kindness, care, and concern that the staff showed guided us and eased her into the transition,” said a family member in their review. “The Traditions of Hanover staff is proud to be able to serve our seniors and do it well. Our focus will be to continue to strive for excellence!” said Cathy Heimsoth, executive director. “Families are increasingly looking to online reviews to find out who truly delivers great care for our seniors, not just who claims to deliver great care," said Eric Seifert, President of SeniorAdvisor.com. "Our SeniorAdvisor.com Awards program is all about celebrating the exceptional people who do just that. We're honored to spread the word about these organizations that families can entrust with the care of their senior loved ones.” To qualify for inclusion in the Best of 2016 Awards, providers must have maintained an average overall rating of at least 4.5 stars while receiving three or more new reviews in 2015. Additional details and a complete list of award winners can be found on SeniorAdvisor.com. To see the full list of award winners in Bethlehem, please visit www.senioradvisor.com/Bethlehem-pa/assisted-living.

The Grownup by Gillian Flynn

ans are rejoicing for a new release by the best-selling author of Gone Girl, Miss Gillian Flynn. However, it’s not really new per se, as the short story The Grownup originally appeared in Rogues, an anthology of short stories by a collection of authors. The main character in The Grownup is a nameless con artist who performs both aura readings and sexual favors for a

living. Things take a sharp turn towards creepy when a troubled woman named Susan walks into “Spiritual Palms” seeking help. She is deeply disturbed by her new Victorian home and is convinced her equally disturbing stepson Miles is somehow involved. When our con artist visits the eerie home to perform “cleansings,” she soon realizes she is in over her head. Can she escape before it’s too late? The thought of The Grownup was particularly exciting because one, the queen of twisted and creepy delivers a ghost story…yes please! Two, it is a short story, coming in at just 62 pages. That was all the intrigue I needed to put in a hold request at the library. I was a little nervous to read this story as I assumed Gillian Flynn would scare my pants right off; she has a way of casually dropping bombs that just chill me to the core. About 75% of her short story did not disappoint, with a creepy little boy that vomits in people’s purses and scuttles around like an insect, and an old Victorian home that sometimes drips blood from the wall. Flynn even throws in one of her famous, crazy woman plot twists, and then about two more plots twists after that, all within 62 pages. However, the ending fell completely flat. I don’t want to give it away in case you plan on reading it, and if that’s the case, please do not buy this book. Go to the library for about a half hour to read it, and then you can leave and go home disappointed.

Flynn’s voice was as clever, cunning, and witty as usual, and despite such a short page count, her character developments were rich and concise. The ending was just so ridiculous and absurd that I can’t call The Grownup a good story. It felt as though Flynn was only allowed to take up 62 pages and was unaware of this until over halfway through the story, so she had to slap an ending together and throw it in there. I felt like Flynn spent a lot of time on the main character’s backstory in the beginning—much valuable space that could have better served the story justice later on. If The Grownup had been a full-sized novel with a more satisfying ending, it could have really blown my mind. Unfortunately, and I’m sorry Gillian Flynn because it hurts my heart but, The Grownup packs a weak punch and I’m thankful for only spending 20 minutes on it.

Victor Salicetti Of AmericaVen Featured Speaker For January Submitted by KAYTE CONNELLY Victor Salicetti, President and CEO of AmericanVen, will be the featured speaker for the January 19 "Up Close and Personal" portion of the Becoming Better Leaders Program. The balance of the program held from 8 a.m. through noon will be studying the works of Seth Godin and his "Be Bold, Be Brave, and Get Noticed" presentation at the 2015 Leadercast. Every month, the Leadership Consortium conducts programs supporting emerging and existing leaders to reach their personal and professional goals. MasterMinds by Leadership Thought Leaders, daily affirmations, assessments, exercises and coaching sessions bring a full balance to participants. "The Leadercast is one of the single most consolidated sources of leadership that I know of," said Gretchen Boyer, Human Resources Manager at Lehigh Valley Technical Institute. "But it goes beyond that. I think these programs, although very focused on leadership, transcends the topic and really shows you how to lead in life." According to a 2014 DeLoitte Global Executive

Survey, leadership is the number one issue concerning Chief Executives. The Greater Lehigh Valley Leadership Consortium is a think-tank of like-minded individuals dedicated to creating and sustaining generations of leaders. Presently, members include Best Principled Solutions LLC, AmericaVen, Cedar Crest College and the Women's Leadership Institute, Lehigh Carbon Community College and the Center for Leadership and Workforce Development, Lehigh Valley Business, 107.5 FM WBYN Alive and RMobileMarketing.
