Touch of Dutch Continued from page 9

The farmers are in the store With eggs and poultry And they lay them on the counter. The store man fills their powder horn Full with gunpowder, with small grain Right to shoot in this New Year And with it to greet their neighbors. The dark shadows were barely fallen (gone) When we hear the guns cracking Here and there, to call them in, To prove their willingness to volunteer. They loaded the old muskets, And waded through knee-deep snow Silently, quietly, like a mouse Towards the nearest farmer’s house. There they stood in deep snow, With cold feet and stiff legs; Some man had his bare ears Frozen, and with it, his feet yet.

The captain gave the orders Then it was straight away another activity With the shooters at that night – Yes, they were all on the watch. They wait, all aching to shoot, Yet they want to shed no blood, Soon as the word (Fire!) comes out We hear the rifles grumbling. The rifles cracked That (it) reverberated over hill and dale; Then they freshly reloaded – Almost as quick as the soldiers. The captain (recited) a verse Without a book ( - from memory), Then they sang a nice little ditty, For the old folks and the young ones. When the dogs got a whiff of the powder, They crawled under the porch And were quiet like the mice – After that they would bite no one. Continued on page 12

And a good whisky with herbs, A New Year’s snack and good wine, And raised cakes also with it.

Continued from page 11

Then one hears the key turn In the door, and would see The man of the house with a light in hand Opening the door where he stood.

All the New Year’s snack was eaten, The wine was poured by the glass(ful); Then they went to the door to (go) out And hurried to the next house.

He warmly invited them all in, And took them into his room; They were glad to go inside With cold feet and stiff legs.

There was not a home in every stretch Like now; else the cuckoo would be out ( – to get them [An old saying]): If they would have drank too often They would have disappeared into the snow.

Here was applejack and cider,

They would have been frozen like a cucumber; Then many a wife would have a sorrow On her heart, when (he was) brought home, Frozen on the New Year’s night. [Thomas Jefferson Boyer Rhoads was born in 1837; he had been named James, but, as a young boy, he took the name of a President, naming himself Thomas Jefferson Boyer Rhoads, Boyer being his mother's maiden name. Rhoads studied at Mt. Pleasant Seminary and began a short teaching career at age 18; but he later decided to study medicine, graduating from Jefferson Medical School in 1861. He set up practice first in Gilbertsville in 1862 and then in Boyertown in 1868. In addition to practicing medicine, he also established the Farmer’s National Bank in 1882, serving as its president till his death in 1919. In 1885 he built a three-story brick building which housed the bank on the first floor. The second floor contained two offices and the Rhoads Opera House, the site of that deadly fire in 1908, where 171 people perished. Although the building had inadequate fire escapes, he was acquitted of any liability for

JANUARY 3, 2019 || townandcountrygazette.com

that catastrophe, since the auditorium was under lease to another individual at that time. A man with many different talents, Rhoads also wrote Dutch poetry, composed while making his rounds with horse and buggy. Using the pseudonym "Onkel Jeff" he published volumes in 1904 and 1906. (In this poem he used English loan words and also some German words and phrases. Some of the German I changed to Dutch, some I noted as ‘German.’) Dr. Rhoads continued to practice medicine until 1914. He had been a doctor for 52 years.] Ich winsch eich all en sicher, gsund Hallich Neiyaahr! I wish you all a safe, healthy Happy New Year!

Beyond Brushing and Flossing, 5 Ways To Stay Out of the Dental Chair submitted by Ashley Pontius

For good dental health, regular checkups are a necessity. But let’s face it. Regardless of whether your teeth are in good shape or bad, going to the dentist, even just for a cleaning, doesn’t make everyone’s list of top things they like to do. And when there’s extra work to be done – such as filling cavities – it can be even more troubling. Most people know they should brush and floss. “Reducing the amount of sugar in your diet is a great place to start,” says Dr. Anita Myers, a dentist and author of the bookStunning Smiles: A Dental Guide To Improve the Way You Eat, Smile & Live (www.dranitamyers.com).“Many people when they get up in the morning get a croissant, muffin or doughnut, and a coffee with sugar. To protect their teeth, it would be much better to substitute whole grain cereal and then sweeten it with fruit.” While Dr. Myers says most people worry about the impact of sugar on their weight, the damage done to teeth is just as bad if not worse. “If you change your lifestyle you can lose extra weight. But if you lose your teeth because of too much sugar, you can’t get them back.” Dr. Myers offers the following advice for those who want to do a better job of caring for their teeth and gums: Make good diet choices. Stay away from processed foods, which often contain sugar even when you don’t realize it. Sugar, of course, leads to tooth decay that causes cavities. Here’s how: The mouth has both good and bad bacteria in it. The harmful

bacteria feed off the sugar, and as they do so they produce acid that breaks down your teeth layer by layer. Some processed foods that people may not realize have significant amounts of sugar include low-fat yogurt, condiments such as ketchup and barbeque sauce, pasta sauce and salad dressings. Don’t abuse over-the-counter medications. Prescription drugs can create dental issues. For example, a side effect of many medications is dry mouth, which leads to a variety of oral-health problems. And watch out for the sugar in most cough drops and antacids, as some people tend to rely on these on a regular basis. Stop smoking and using tobacco. In addition to being bad for teeth and gums, they increase the odds of oral cancer. Chewing tobacco bathes the teeth and gums in toxins. Drink plenty of water. Water cleanses the mouth of toxins. Stop illegal drug use. Cocaine and methamphetamine cause a reduction in saliva flow that results in decay and affects the entire mouth. “Too many people think brushing and flossing are the only aspects of good dental care,” says Dr. Myers. “While those activities are important, there are many other things patients can do to maintain a great smile.” About Dr. Anita Myers Dr. Anita Myers, a dentist and author of the book

6 Tips To Help Those in Recovery Avoid Alcohol During the Holidays submitted by Terry Stanton

The holidays are a time for family and friends to gather and share laughs, memories – and perhaps a drink or two. But for people recovering from an addiction, all that alcohol often present at special events can be worrisome. “Holiday parties are when many alcoholics fall off the wagon,” says John Collopy, author of the book The Reward of Knowing (www.johncollopy. com), which relates his own struggles with addiction. “There just seems to be alcohol everywhere, sometimes even at the office. It can be very difficult, especially for people who have only recently stopped drinking.” Although Collopy has been sober for many years, he knows that the holidays are a gateway to his past life. He used alcohol to help him deal with memories of a troubled childhood with a dysfunctional family and abusive father. When he became an adult, he quickly became dependent on alcohol to get through the day, plus he had anger management issues. “Every day for an alcoholic is a challenge, but

over the holidays it can be overwhelming,” says Collopy, who today is a successful real estate broker. “People don’t realize when they offer drinks to people over the holidays how difficult it is for some people to say no. Real alcoholics know they can never have just one.” For those who want to stay sober during the holidays, here are a few tips from Alcoholics Anonymous and the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation: Skip any drinking occasions you are nervous about. If you are really concerned about an event, just ask yourself if you really need to go. But you don’t have to just sit home. Take your family out and look at the holiday lights or find another activity that gets you in the holiday mood without alcohol. Leave early. If you know you will be tempted to drink at a party, plan in advance to tell people when you arrive that you only stopped by briefly, and have somewhere else you need to be. Go with a sober friend. There is safety in numbers, and you can help each other should you be tempted to drink. Carry around a soft drink. If you already have a drink in your hand, people are less likely to ask you if you want a drink. Avoid known risks. If you know your brother is a heavy drinker, for example, stay away from him. If you know the same party last year was full of excessive drinking, just stay home. Create new traditions. It can be a downer if you have to skip all the holiday fun. So come up with some of your own. Buy a new board game, go look at the holiday decorations or host your own small non-alcoholic party with sober friends.

It has been many years since Collopy was an alcoholic, but he says the rewards of his life now are much better than any drink he ever took. “Once you’re sober, you can allow yourself to begin to dream about life again, the way you did when you were a kid,” he says.“That doesn’t mean those dreams are going to be easy to achieve, but at least you can look at them and say, ‘I’ve got a shot.’ ” About John Collopy John Collopy, author of the book The Reward of Knowing (https://johncollopy.results.net), is the owner and broker of RE/MAX Results and its subsequent 38 offices across Minnesota and Wisconsin. With annual sales of more than $5.3

billion, RE/MAX Results is now one of the largest RE/MAX franchises in the world. John currently lives in Minnesota with his wife and children.

Mountain Wine Festival Wineries Make Donation to NCC submitted by Katherine Noll

Pennsylvania vineyards are not only family owned and operated while preserving beautiful green spaces in the Lehigh Valley, but they are also helping fund the next generation of enologists (wine production experts) and viticulturists (grape growing specialists) at Northampton Community College (NCC)! Local wineries who participate in the Mountain Wine Festival, Black River Farms, Blue Mountain Vineyards, Franklin Hill Vineyards, Galen Glen Winery, Tolino Vineyards, and Vynecrest Vineyard and Winery, made a $5,000 donation to NCC's Foundation for students interested in the art of making wine and growing grapes. Andrew Warner, proprietor of Black River Farms, teaches NCC's "From Vine to Wine" course, a certificate program designed to deepen knowledge of growing grapes and producing wine. "We wanted to keep the money in our community and help people pay for those courses and related courses in the culinary and hospitality programs," Warner said. "I have hired five people who have taken the NCC class I teach to work at the vineyard." Elaine Pivinski, owner of Franklin Hill Vineyards,

NCC's Fab Lab Helps Chanel Fashion Shine for the Holidays! submitted by Mia Rossi

ELF Productions has been designing, fabricating and installing for over 30 years. Michael Bianco, instructor at Northampton Community College's Fowler Family Southside Center Fab Lab, owns the company that creates Christmas displays for malls across the country, and he uses the Lab to help with his creations. This year, a big-name asked Bianco to do the fabrication for their store front Christmas display. The fashion designer, Chanel, heard about ELF Productions through a design and install company they hired to do their display. Having worked with ELF Productions in the past, American Christmas immediately thought of Bianco and his team to help fabricate the pieces. Chanel came up with an idea, and Bianco used NCC's Fab Lab to make it come to life. The design was 3D printed, and laser cut shapes were assembled and made into rubber molds. Bianco cast the finished pieces in resin. The pieces, the designer's logos in a collage, were displayed at the front of the Chanel buildings in the Madison and SoHo stores in New York City. Bianco said, "The Fab Lab is great with its numerous pieces of versatile equipment. I got started with the Lab by taking a Solid Works (3D drafting) class. I fell in love with the laser and started playing with it so much they asked me to be an instructor. I teach graphic design, resin and plastic molding and casting classes. I recently set up the plastic shop in the new space, like the one I have at my work." How did he get his start in the holiday business? It all began with a mall in Colorado. Bianco had an events company there, and a new mall asked him to do their grand opening. With a background in technical theatre, Bianco was able to do all the

logistics for the event but also fabricate display pieces to really "wow" visitors. After the opening, a seed was planted. The mall asked him to do Christmas displays, and his company grew from there. This year, Bianco and his team worked with about 20 malls all over the country. Freelancers work with him as he travels the country to complete these intricate installs. At any given time, over 100 people could be working with Bianco at home and on the road. Bianco thought the name for his company was fitting for his holiday themed work, "It used to be MZB Productions, basically my initials. We rebranded because everyone called themselves Santa's little helpers, and ELF came about." It looks like Santa's helpers really know how to spread holiday cheer on a grand scale!

The Holidays Are Over, Why Am I So Blue?

Some tips to lift your sadness after the busy holiday time Many people experience sadness when the holidays are over. Sometimes it hits them hard and seems to come out of the blue. If I’m describing you, please don’t be alarmed. This reaction to the end of the holiday season is not at all unusual. There are many reasons people get sad after the holidays. Here are some of them: 1. We tend to have our schedules filled with social events during the month of December, only to have virtually nothing on the calendar in the month of January. So, we go from being social butterflies to being homebodies. If you enjoyed and looked forward to socializing it most likely felt good and fulfilling to you. Getting out and being with people may have helped you to feel wanted, loved, important. You may have had the opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and/or reacquaint yourself with old ones. A change in social calendar with a sudden lack of social events to go to can lead to loneliness, boredom and a feeling of isolation. 2. We often spend time with family during the holidays. And spending time with family can leave us with mixed feelings. Sometimes we feel let down by our interactions with family members and disappointed with the way they behaved towards us and/or treated us. This can lead to sadness and its own kind of mourning. Other times, we might experience tremendous joy at being with family members and then miss them terribly when they have gone home. 3. Holidays tend to bring up memories of those no longer with us, or those with whom we no longer have a relationship. The loss

might be because of death, divorce, or distance. Holidays can make us feel like we're going through the mourning process all over again. 4. January is a dark, cold month where people tend to hibernate. So you may feel stuck at home. Additionally, it’s a month that can bring lots of snow leading to cancellations and the inability to go out as often as you may want. 5. If you travelled or moved around a lot during the holidays, you may be tired now that they are over. Fatigue can cause us to feel run down and bring on sadness. 6. You may have taken days off from work and so had time to rest and relax and now are back to work every day. Taking time off means that work was not done and you may be left with a pile of work to get through that can seem overwhelming. 7. You may have overindulged in food and/ or drink during the holidays and now when you get on the scale you feel guilty, inadequate, and/or weak. 8. Perhaps you’re disappointed by the holidays. It wasn’t what you had hoped for and now feel let down that they’re over. Above are some of the reasons why the end of the holiday season may cause sadness, even depression in some. Below are some things you can do to help yourself: 1-Take some of what you made you feel good during the holidays and continue them into the days and months after the holidays. For example, if you enjoyed having lots of plans and looked forward to being out with others, make sure you make some plans now. Invite Continued on page 35

5 Reasons Why Cryptocurrency May Rebound in 2019 submitted by TERRY STANTON

The cryptocurrency industry has been on a rollercoaster ride in recent years, with prices shooting up, then falling sharply. Bitcoin (BTC) lost nearly 70 percent of its value in 2018, triggering a domino effect as other cryptocurrencies such as Binance Coin (BNB) and EOS also experienced losses. But some market experts who follow cryptocurrency closely think it will rebound in 2019, and apparently many investors are still strapped in for the wild ride. “There are plenty of facts to back up the case for an imminent crypto rebound,” says Daniel Ameduri (www.futuremoneytrends.com), co-founder of the Future Money Trends newsletter. “One fact is that cryptocurrency has game-changing technology. “After some inevitable corrections over the past few years, the bounce-backs have shown that crypto is built for the new global economy. And keep in mind, Amazon fell 95 percent in 2002.” Ameduri reviews some reasons cryptocurrency could rebound in the coming year: History repeats.“Cryptocurrencies have a history of crashes and recoveries just like other asset classes, but on an accelerated timeline,” Ameduri says. “You’re getting all of the ups and downs that you’d expect to see in any investment class – stocks, real estate, commodities, etc. except it’s moving at a faster pace.” It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Patience for the long haul is vital to staying invested in stocks that seem exciting at their inception.“BTC is a prime example of that,” Ameduri says. “Without exception, BTC recovered all losses from past corrections and then reached new all-time highs, handsomely rewarding patient and level-headed investors. For example, even if the recent decline were to exceed 80 percent, Bitcoin historians can cite multiple times where the price has staged a full recovery from a drop of that magnitude.” Crypto and techno are a perfect marriage. “BTC and the others have groundbreaking technology attached to them,” Ameduri says.“Immutable digital ledger technology is now part of the fabric of the global economy and is here to stay.” Real grassroots enthusiasm. Along with the investments, Ameduri says, are waves of entrepreneurs flocking to crypto conferences, reflecting the building momentum of an industry fighting for relevance in a changing economy.“Those are the underpinnings of success,” Ameduri says. “It’s still an exotic currency for early adaptors, JANUARY 3, 2019 || townandcountrygazette.com

moving forward and right on the cusp of reaching the masses. An exciting time.” Institutional investors. With major banks such as Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs planning to serve the crypto market, Ameduri says waves of capital could be released as institutions feel comfortable entering the market. “This will help build the infrastructure necessary for far more investing,” Ameduri says. “Crypto moves at an accelerated pace,” Ameduri says, “so it won’t be long before massive-scale adoption kicks in.” About Daniel Ameduri Daniel Ameduri (www.FutureMoneyTrends.com) is co-founder of the Future Money Trends newsletter, an authority for financial freedom and economic research in commodities, cryptocurrencies, personal finance and income ideas. A self-made multimillionaire, Ameduri also has a YouTube channel, VisionVictory, that has received 10 million video views. He’s also been featured in The Wall Street Journal and ABC World News.

How Young is Too Young For Orthodontic Treatment? submitted by Ashley Pontius

Step into a middle school and you likely will see plenty of smiles accented by braces. But parents who put off a trip to the orthodontist until their child is on the cusp of the teen years could be waiting too late. Plenty of problems can start developing long before all of a child’s permanent teeth have arrived. The question then becomes when – and how – to intervene. And the answer won’t necessarily be the same from every orthodontist or dentist you consult. “This is definitely a confusing topic,” says Dr. Jamie Reynolds (www.AskDrReynolds.com), an orthodontist, national and international lecturer, and author of World Class Smiles Made in Detroit. “Depending on whom you ask, you will get a variety of answers about what treatment is necessary and when, and how exactly it should proceed. And getting more opinions doesn’t always help because you may end up with several different – and conflicting – opinions.” Reynolds suggests having a child examined by an orthodontist by age 7, which is also the recommendation of the American Association of Orthodontists. Usually, those initial exams are free. Even that early in life, he says, there are four major things an orthodontist can look at: Are the jaws growing properly? The upper jaw stops growing about age 8, much earlier than the lower jaw and the rest of the body. “Because of this, orthodontists can identify issues with the growth of the upper jaw earlier and can recommend treatments for any deficiencies,” Reynolds says. For example, the most common growth issue is that the upper jaw is not wide enough. A device called a rapid-palatal expander can help with this. Is there enough room for teeth to grow in? A tooth is said to be “impacted” when it can’t grow in because something is in the way (such as another tooth or an extra tooth) or because it is growing in the wrong direction. “Impacted teeth are a pain to deal with, both for the doctor and the patient,” Reynolds says. “It’s much harder for the doctor to get access to impacted teeth and bring them into the proper position. For the patient, a small surgery may be required to uncover the tooth so the orthodontist can begin to straighten it.” Early intervention, though, can often create enough room for teeth to grow in properly, he says, making future treatment much easier and more comfortable for the patient. JANUARY 3, 2019 || townandcountrygazette.com

How are the teeth that are not yet in the mouth developing – and are the correct number present? It might seem surprising, but it’s not unusual for people to have either missing or extra teeth, Reynolds says. Extra teeth usually cause more problems as they crowd out other teeth. That means early screening is key, and often those extra teeth are removed. With missing teeth, treatment usually doesn’t happen until all the permanent teeth have grown in. Does the child snore, and is there an airway obstruction? Sleep apnea, a condition in which a person temporarily stops breathing while sleeping, can start at an early age. Children can be diagnosed as early as ages 4 or 5, Reynolds says, and often snoring or purring like a kitten while sleeping is a sign. The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, which an orthodontist can treat. “Most kids who will need orthodontic treatment can wait until they are 12 or 13,” Reynolds says. “But it’s still important to have them checked out at a much earlier age, just in case there are problems that can be solved with early intervention.” About Dr. Jamie Reynolds Dr. Jamie Reynolds (www.AskDrReynolds.com) is recognized on an annual basis as one of the top orthodontists in metro Detroit. His book, World Class Smiles Made in Detroit, puts an emphasis on the many benefits of having a great smile. Reynolds – who is a national and international lecturer on high-tech digital orthodontics and practice management – attended the University of Michigan for both his undergrad education and dental studies, and did his orthodontic residency at the University of Detroit-Mercy.

New Year’s Continued from page 36

And pou'd the gowans fine, But we've wander'd monie a weary fit, Sin auld lang syne. We twa hae paidl'd in the burn, Frae morning sun till dine, But seas between us braid hae roar'd Sin auld lang syne. And there's a hand my trusty fiere, And gie's a hand o thine, And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught, For auld lang syne. Auld Lang Syne The most commonly sung song for English-speakers on NewYear's eve, "Auld Lang Syne" is an old Scottish song that was first published by the poet Robert Burns in the 1796 edition of the book, Scots Musical Museum. Burns transcribed it (and made some refinements to the lyrics) after he heard it sung by an old man from the Ayrshire area of Scotland, Burns's homeland. It is often remarked that "Auld Lang Syne" is one of the most popular songs that nobody knows the lyrics to. "Auld Lang Syne" literally translates as "old long since" and means "times gone by." The song asks whether old friends and times will be forgotten and promises to remember people of the past with fondness, "For auld lang syne, we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet." 37
