Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority Candy Cane Recap The Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority was pleased with its first major community event – a Candy Cane Hunt held at Victory Park on Saturday December 10. According to NLRA Director Mike Kukitz, more than 600 children ranging in ages from toddlers to age 10, scrambled with holiday glee for the thousands of candy canes covering the bushes, trees, playground equipment, etc. on a blustery Saturday morning.

For the children who found a specially marked candy cane, they received a special holiday toy. In addition, the highlight of the fun event was the appearance of Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff from Disney’s Frozen, who huddled with the children for pictures. Mrs. Santa Claus made her magical appearance as well to the delight of the children. Several NLRA board members baked cookies, and hot chocolate and juice were offered free of charge.

The latest acquisition at the historical centre is an Edison home phonograph, patented in 1888. This is a unique and valuable item on display at the historical centre. It requires a big horn on a tripod to hold it and round cylinders. The phonograph and accessories were a special donation by Cindy Deppe. We hope when you visit the next time, you will be sure to see these new items.

Northampton DECA Members Create Campaign To End Texting While Driving submitted by TARA MRAZIK

Throughout the years, there have been many car accidents involving teenagers in the Northampton community. In an approach to prevent teen wrecks and promote safe driving, senior DECA members, Ciana Heckman and Sarah Schisler, have created a campaign to put an end to phone use while driving. This campaign called, “Be a Leader by Demonstration, Drive Safely to Your Destination” was targeted toward the juniors and seniors in the

high school. In an effort to educate the students, an assembly was held on Monday, December 12 discussing the hazards of distracted driving. Amanda Demczyszyn, Northampton alumni, Northampton Regional EMT, and LCCC nursing student, spoke at the assembly and provided reallife scenarios to the students. Amanda states, “The ‘Be a Leader by Demonstration, Drive Safely to Your Destination’ campaign was an eye opening presentation for the junior and senior classes at the high school. We need to put a stop to the use of our phones while driving. This is not only teenagers but adults as well and we can all be advocates of this campaign.” “Don’t let one simple text put your life or someone else’s life on the line.” We also had nine student leaders share their experiences with their peers and touch upon how this problem has evolved over the years. In order to take a stand against phone use while driving, Sarah and Ciana have created and implemented a pledging system. Students had the opportunity to sign a pledge paper and receive

If a student would reach for their phone while behind the wheel, the wristband would remind them of their pledge. This incentive allowed the students to demonstrate leadership through their pledge and stand against texting while driving. The nine student leaders took the first pledge and started a movement within the student body resulting in over 250 pledges. According to Mr. Lopata, Assistant Principal at Northampton High School, “Distracted driving is all too common amongst teenagers today, Ciana and Sarah's honest

and powerful presentation really resonated with their peers and lead to many of them pledging not to text and drive. This a good first step in stopping the problem.” “Be a Leader by Demonstration, Drive Safely to Your Destination”has impacted many upperclassmen at Northampton High School and is continuously raising awareness to distracted driving. Ciana Heckman states, “Our goal is to improve the distracted driving statistics among teenagers and ultimately all age groups. The bottom line is that I like my classmates, and don’t want to see anyone hurt as a result of distracted driving.”

Church To Hold Community Blood Drive submitted by NINA WEISS

The Wellness Team of Hope Lutheran Church, located at 4131 Lehigh Drive, Cherryville, Pennsylvania, is hosting a Miller-Keystone Community Blood Drive in Kuntz Hall, at 4131 Lehigh Drive, Cherryville, on January 22, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The American Red Cross encourages individuals and organizations to give something meaningful this winter by making a lifesaving blood donation. Blood donations decline during the holidays, when holiday festivities pull people away from their donation appointments. Seasonal illnesses, such as cold and flu, can also have a serious impact on blood donations, postpone drives while people are traveling for the holidays. Furthermore, severe winter weather may also cause scheduled blood drives to be canceled. Despite the busy holiday season and threat of extreme freezing weather, the need for blood remains steady. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with O negative, B negative, A negative and AB blood. Visit www.GIVEaPINT.org to create your donor profile and schedule your appointment – use sponsor code 0288 or call Helene Mery at 610-837-0792. Walk-ins are also welcome.

A New Year’s Wish In December 1973 the Pennsylvania German Society published three New Year wishes/greetings in The Rainbow [the Society's quarterly]. Here are some verses: I wish you a nice New Year! I wish you and your wife Sons and daughters, manservants and maidservants And all those That go in and out of this house A happy new year A healthy body and long life Which God wants to give you out of grace. And God preserve you in this house Where you go in and out From fire and flood From sickness and sudden death From theft and all danger

May God protect you at all times in the year. We go and wander From one year to the other We live and prosper From the old to the new Through so much fear and lament Through trembling and hesitation Through war and great terror Covering the whole world And furthermore we wish you The joy of heaven and God's blessing. Now I want to dare To ask each of you Whether the shooting and banging Today may resound before your house For I and my companions All have guns and well loaded We will stand ourselves to the side And shoot off four of them with joy Thus I want to end my wish And hope that it will not displease you And since we hear no displeasure So you shall hear our shot The shots which we will now do Continued on page 30

Touch of Dutch Continued from page 29

We do in your honor We stand on your land And have our guns in our hands And our gun hammers well cocked As soon as we move our hammers So soon you will be able to see the fire/flash. –Earl C. Haag [Since the New Year is still young, I think it’s appropriate to feature this article, that mentions traditional New Year’s wishes. (It first appeared in Earl Haag’s Es Neinuhr Schtick newspaper column.) These wishes were usually given out by a group of men going about the neighborhood New Year’s Eve and each wish was concluded by firing off several rounds from muzzleloaders or shotguns. And of course, they were hoping to be invited in for food and drink. This tradition came over with the Dutch from the old country and perhaps some of the wishes also may have come in with them. The above wishes contain some Standard German words and phrases, with which the people would have been familiar, since they attended churches

where the worship services were in German; many of those churches in rural areas continued the German into the early 20th century. Because these wishes were metrical and often were recited in a sing-song manner, I did not want to substitute good Dutch words for the German. With a little patience we can work through the German in these wishes. Some of the German words have similar sounding and meaning Dutch words and I am sure you will recognize them; others you would need to look up in a German dictionary if you wanted to gain more insight. But in all cases, the English translation, also done by Earl Haag, should help you understand the meaning of the original. En hallich Neiyaahr zu eich all. A happy new year to all!]

Winter wonderland in library display

The Grim family of Slatington has created a winter wonderland in the Slatington Library’s window. Jacob Moyer, a cousin of Rita Grim, collected “Department 56” buildings, figures and all sorts of accessories over a period of 30 years. The collection came to Rita after his death. Her son Bill, suggested the library window would be a JANUARY 5, 2017 || townandcountrygazette.com

perfect spot to set up a good part of the collection. Rita, her husband Bill, and her son spent parts of four days laying out the window, lighting the houses and adding the snow. It is a beautiful and nostalgic sight. The buildings are lit between 5 and 10 p.m. and can be seen even when the library is closed. 33
