5 Reasons You Should Adopt a Pet By Laura Miller

Are you in the market for a little more love in your life? Adopting a pet is one of the very best ways to do that. And when you adopt from a shelter or rescue organization – instead of buying from a breeder, a pet store or a stranger over the internet – you get the added benefit of saving the life of an animal in need. It’s a win-win. Adopting a dog or cat – or rabbit, guinea pig, lizard, etc. – is a big decision, but if you know you’re ready for the responsibility, head to the shelter. SAVE TWO LIVES Animals in shelters are overwhelmingly sweet, loving animals that simply ended up in unfortunate situations. For approximately 1.5 million of them, the journeys will end in euthanasia. That’s where you come in. Adopting an animal from a shelter or other type of rescue organization not only saves that one animal’s life, but it also saves the life of another animal that can now take the empty spot you’ve opened up. It’s a double good deed and a second chance for two animals that otherwise might not JULY 16, 2020 || townandcountrygazette.com

Rescue a Friend have gotten one. SAVE MONEY Purchasing a fancy breeder dog or cat can set you back thousands of dollars. Buy from a pet store and not only will you be spending a similarly large amount of money, but you’ll be pretty likely to get an inbred animal from a puppy mill prone to expensive medical conditions. In comparison, the adoption fee you’ll pay at the shelter is usually just a couple of hundred dollars – and often less, and that almost always includes spay/neuter and initial vaccinations. Many openadmission organizations, such as your local animal care and control facility, also regularly waive their fees to help encourage adoptions when kennels are filling up. And that money you’re spending at the shelter isn’t going into someone’s pocket – it’s directly subsidizing the care of other animals while they wait to find their forever homes. HELP STOP COMMERCIAL BREEDING Puppy mills, also called commercial breeding facilities, are nightmares for the animals who find themselves there. Dogs and cats are kept in cages their entire lives, without proper nutrition, medical care, or companionship, and with no opportunity Continued on page 13

to get outside or experience love. They have one purpose: to breed whatever trendy purebred puppy or kitten is currently in high demand, the bulk of whom are shipped off to pet stores and sold on the internet (the less lucky ones become breeder animals themselves). If it’s unsavory to think about, it’s even less savory to perpetuate. Puppy mills exist because of demand. If you adopt a pet instead of purchasing one, that’s one less customer for the mills and one step closer to a world without them.

GET AN AMAZING ANIMAL All animals are different, and no animal is perfect. But rescued animals have a unique way of connecting with their humans. Maybe it’s their gratitude for being saved. Whatever the reason, a rescue pet will light up your life and bring near endless joy. And forget what you’ve heard about shelter animals being “damaged;” many of them are perfectly healthy, both physically and emotionally, and even those with harrowing pasts can often learn to love and trust humans. JOIN A COMMUNITY Rescue organizations love their animals, and they will usually go out of their way to keep tabs on them. From alumni meet-ups and Facebook groups to adopter appreciation events and fundraising efforts, there are plenty of ways to stay involved and become part of a larger community of animal lovers. Rescuing a pet is one of the most gratifying things you can do in your life. And with so many millions of animals waiting for a home, you can almost always find whatever breed or personality you’re looking for. Give shelter pets a chance, and always think adoption first.

The Need for Animal Adoption Currently, no government institution or animal organization is responsible for tabulating national statistics for the animal protection movement. The numbers that follow are national estimates based in part on Shelter Animals Count data and other known and estimated sources from 2015-2018. Approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted (1.6 million dogs and 1.6 million cats) and about 710,000 animals that enter shelters as strays are returned to their owners. Sadly, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. That annual number has declined, from approximately 2.6 million in 2011. This decline is partially explained by an increase in the percentage of animals adopted and an increase in the number of stray animals successfully returned to their owners. STRAYS, RESCUES, SURRENDERS Although animals enter shelters for a variety of reasons, the majority of shelter populations are comprised of strays, rescues and surrenders. Stray animals are often found on the streets and brought in by Good Samaritans or local law authorities. When the owner of an animal can no longer care for them due to financial, behavioral or other unforeseen circumstances, the owner will often surrender the pet to a shelter. Animals rescued from cruelty from situations like hoarding cases, dog fighting rings and puppy mills, often suffer from trauma and require extra care and rehabilitation. Due to overwhelming intake rates and demands, shelters often struggle to adopt out all – or even most – of the animals that come through their doors. The need for adoption has never been greater.

Become an Animal Advocate April of every year there is National Animal Advocacy Day, although many people fight for stronger laws for animals all year long. If you would like to become an animal advocate, here are some tips from insiders to help you find your best and strongest voice for animals. It’s all about becoming a known entity to your legislators. A staggering number of messages flow through legislative offices and the way many offices prioritize these communications is by sorting them by the perceived “value” of the sender. Here’s what they’re looking for and how you can transform yourself from a mere voice in the crowd to a valued constituent whose opinion is sought and respected. REGISTER TO VOTE Legislators want to stay in office, which means they want to hear from their constituents – not people who live outside their districts – and they really want to hear from the people who actually determine whether they get to keep their jobs: voters. To start, register to vote, and then actually do vote – especially in primaries. When you email your elected official, staff will often cross-reference your information with district voting records to see if you’re a voter. Active voters have more value to them, so if you’re not a voter, your message probably won’t be given as much consideration. SIGN UP FOR NEWSLETTERS Another way legislators see if you’re engaged is by checking your email address against their internal lists. Almost all of them send out periodic email blasts, which you can sign up to receive from their official websites. Determine who your federal and state legislators are, then visit their sites and opt in for emails. These emails will also inform you of opportunities to meet your legislators either in person or in virtual forums. JULY 16, 2020 || townandcountrygazette.com

ATTEND FORUMS Whether it’s a live event or a virtual in this COVID-19 era, municipal, state and federal lawmakers frequently host in-district events to take the pulse of their constituents. These community events are the perfect chance to become a familiar face to your legislators and their staff and, of course, to bring up animalprotection issues. ASPCA’S ADVOCACY BRIGADE The ASPCA has an animal Advocacy Brigade. Their “Advocacy Alerts” will let you know when animal-friendly legislation is pending where you live. The Alerts also give you specific actions you can take and provide talking points to use with your elected officials no matter how you contact them. By getting involved in the policy-making process, you can truly become an effective animal advocate.

Why Two Dogs are Better Than One By: Christina Donnelly

Dogs can bring so much joy into our lives: They’re loving, loyal, hilarious, and adorable, and many dog parents see them as family members. So what could be better than a dog? Well, how about two dogs? While it’s not recommended to have two puppies at the same time, having two dogs – whether it’s two older dogs or an older dog and a puppy – comes with a boatload of benefits. Here are some reasons why you might want to add two furry family members to the crew, rather than one. Continued on page 17

Why Two Dogs Continued from page 15

ENTERTAINMENT AND EXERCISE Playtime is vital to any dog’s health, happiness, socialization, and overall development. Depending on your dog’s age, size, breed, and energy level, you can spend anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours a day exercising him or her. One easy (and cute) way to ensure your dog is getting enough exercise? Add a second dog to the mix. You’ll still have to spend some one-on-one time with each dog every day, but they can keep each other exercised and entertained. Plus, they’ll keep each other company when you’re at work, school, or out running errands, so they won’t resort to boredom-induced hijinks around the house. EASIER PUPPY TRAINING It may be tough to teach an old dog new tricks, but an old dog can certainly teach a new dog some tricks – and the rules of the house. Dogs are pack animals and look to their pack leader for guidance, a role your older dog will naturally take on when you introduce a puppy to the family. EASE SEPARATION ANXIETY Many dogs suffer from anxiety when they’re left alone. One way to reduce that is by bringing a second dog into the family. The dogs will keep each other company while you’re away from your home, and give each other the emotional support and attention they need to stay calm, cool, and collected. Plus, they’ll have a new playmate to focus on. SAVE A SECOND LIFE One of the best reasons to have two dogs, rather than one, is simple: If you adopt two dogs, you’re saving two lives. It’s estimated more than a million dogs are euthanized each year. You can directly impact (and save) the lives of dogs by giving them a safe, happy home. Plus, adopting dogs from your local animal shelter creates more space for other animals-inneed. DOESN’T COST MUCH MORE You can double your cuteness without doubling your costs. Aside from regular immunizations and check-ups, having two dogs at the same time doesn’t cost much more than having one. Dogs can share many of their supplies, including toys, beds, grooming products, water bowls and treats. It is important to note that some puppy food is formulated differently than food for full-grown dogs, so talk to your vet about whether or not your pup and your older dog can share their food. DOUBLE THE LOVE Why do most people add a second dog to the JULY 16, 2020 || townandcountrygazette.com

family? Their first dog brought so much love and joy into their homes they want more! Having two dogs can feel like a lot of work sometimes, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons. From easier training to better mental and emotional health (for you and your dogs), to saving the lives of animals, there are so many solid reasons to adopt a second dog today.

Buy a Purebred From a Reputable Breeder By Jackie Brown

If you have your heart set on a purebred puppy for your next family member, you have a few options available to you. Although purebred puppies are sometimes available for adoption via shelters and private rescue groups, your best option is to find a reputable breeder who is dedicated to raising healthy, temperamentally sound puppies of their chosen breed. Locate a breeder by finding the national breed club for your dog and inquiring about breeder referrals. If your breed isn’t listed on the American Kennel Club (AKC) website, simply Google the breed name and “national breed club” or “national breed association” to find the desired breed’s organization. Here are the key reasons you only want to buy from a reputable breeder: GET EXPERT BREED GUIDANCE If you’ve never owned the breed before, a reputable breeder can counsel you on what to expect and help you decide if the breed will be a good match with your family and lifestyle. Good breeders aren’t in it to make a sale – they will never pressure

you into buying a puppy if the breed is not a good fit. GET A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THE BREED Reputable breeders follow the breed standard, which is the written description of the ideal physical and temperamental characteristics of the breed. The breed standard is why poodles have curly hair, dachshunds have long backs and short legs, and bullmastiffs are big and powerful. The characteristics outlined in the breed standard keep a purebred dog true to its roots and capable of doing the original job is was intended to do, whether that’s herding livestock, hunting in the field, or guarding the home. KNOW YOUR PUPPY’S HISTORY Responsible breeders use pedigrees to research their breeding dog’s relatives, going back many generations to find the best possible matches that will produce healthy puppies that are good representations of the breed. MEET YOUR PUPPY’S PARENTS When you buy from a reputable breeder, you can meet the puppy’s mother (called the dam), and often, other relatives. If the father (called the sire) is on the premises, you can meet him too. If not, the breeder will provide pictures and/or video, and can share the father’s pedigree. very good idea of how you can expect your puppy to look and act when he grows up. HEALTH BACKGROUND Responsible breeders want to produce the healthiest dogs possible. They are acutely aware of the genetic diseases common in their breed and perform specialized health testing on their dogs before breeding to avoid faulty genes. This means the puppy you buy will have a higher chance of not developing a genetically linked disorder. HEALTH GUARANTEE Reputable breeders are so concerned about their dogs’ health that they offer health guarantees. The terms of each breeder’s health guarantee will vary, so ask for specifics. In general, health guarantees might state that if the puppy develops a disease covered by the agreement, you will either receive a refund on the price of the puppy, a replacement puppy, or the breeder might contribute a certain amount of money toward the treatment of the puppy’s health issue. BEST PUPPY FOR YOU All puppies are different. It can be impossible for you to guess if an individual puppy in a litter will grow up to be assertive or mellow, high energy or laid back. Good breeders know their breed and know their puppies. They will help match you with the best puppy for you and your family. ACCESS TO EXPERT HELP A reputable breeder will encourage you to stay in contact with him or her and offer advice throughout the puppy’s lifetime, including health, grooming, training, nutrition, and behavior.

YOUR PUPPY WILL ALWAYS HAVE A HOME Good breeders feel responsible for what happens to the puppies they produce. They don’t want their puppies to ever end up in an animal shelter, or worse, on the streets. The indecisions about the upcoming school year are stressful but may actually be a blessing since it is forcing us to really examine what our choices are and what is best for our kids, not just doing what we always have. Some of the choices include: 1) Returning to the school building: Schools are trying to figure out what is the best way to keep our kids safe. At least at this point, it looks like there will be many safety protocols in place such as masks and temperature checks. Things to ask: What if my child doesn’t/can’t keep the mask on all day? What is the plan if there is a spike in cases? What is the plan if the schools are forced to shut down again? 2) Cyber School from the district: Many schools are creating cyber schools to give an option to parents who want their children to stay home but continue working with the district. Things to ask: How long have the teachers worked with students online? How are they going to ensure that your child is engaged and learning?

3) Hybrid: Most schools are thinking about a combination of in school and cyber. Things to ask: How will you ensure that students have stability and a routine. What are you going to do to ensure that the learning is continuous? 4) Cyber School from other sources: Another option if you want to keep your children home but want another option other than the district is to find a cyber school that meets your needs. Things to ask: What is the percentage of students who go to college? What is the percentage of those students who need remediation classes? How do you ensure engagement? 5) Traditional home school: This option is for parents who realize that it is in their children’s best interest for the parents to create and modify the curriculum, so their children thrive. Questions to ask people you trust who home school: How do I find the curriculum that is best for my children? What do I have to do to follow the laws? What do I do if it isn’t working? No matter what you do, it will help your child keep up their education and keep learning. This crisis is a perfect opportunity to learn that learning does not only exist in a classroom but rather is all around us. If you would like help in this journey, please reach out to us at www.read2day.com or on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/read2day and we can help guide you what is best for your family

Flies (Just the other day I was thinking about flies. There had always been so terribly many flies; now there aren’t so many. We hold their numbers down very much and that [fact] suggested to me that I would write an article about chasing flies.) A fly is an unpleasant, dirty little creature. When one wants to sleep during the day, and there is a fly in the house, they will wander about one’s face. They grab firm hold where they tread and that tickles one so that he can hardly fall asleep. In the olden times out in the country there were millions and millions of flies. They came in the house from the manure piles and pig pens and crawled around the baby’s face. No wonder then, that the babies became sick in those olden days. The flies breed in all sorts of dirt. They say a fly becomes a ‘grandmother’ in a few weeks. But the people are more careful now, and it does not give so many flies. And we have screen doors and windows with screens. So the flies stay outside. Yet I remember how there were so many flies that we could not eat with ‘sanity’. One of the younger girls waved a fly-chaser back and forth and chased the flies away. The horses had a natural fly-chaser: it was the horses’ tail. They also made fly-chasers from horses’ tails. When the blacksmith wanted to nail shoes on the horse, one always chased the flies away. The horses themselves chased the flies away with their tails. Occasionally they hit one in his face with the tail, so that he could see the sparks fly.

The cows also switched their tails to keep the flies away. If a man was a little slow, they always said, “He is always behind the rest, like a cow’s tail.” If a young guy grew slowly, so that one could see little difference [in height] from year to year, we said,“He grows ‘downwards’ like a cow’s tail.” When one was milking and the flies were bad, the cows beat about one’s head with their tails. An old pastor milked his cow on a manure pile and the cow was switching her tail rapidly. So he put the tail through one of the button holes in his jacket. Then the cow took to running; the pastor had to go with her. One of his [church] members then asked him, “Pastor, where are you headed?” The

pastor’s answer,“That no one knows other than God and this cow.” [No Dutch column on ‘Flies’ would be complete without that old question heard thousands of times throughout Dutch country: “Kannscht du Micke fange?” And of course, the expected reply: “Ya, wann sie hocke bleiwe, un wann ich hab en Schuppkarich fer sie fattfaahre.“ ("Can you catch flies? "… "Yes, if they stay sitting, and I have a wheelbarrow to cart them away!")] [Pierce E. After completing his secondary education, he attended Lebanon Valley College and Ursinus College and then taught school for the next six years. He enrolled in Central Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, and was ordained in 1910. After brief pastorates in Franklin and Carbon Counties, he became minister of St. Stephens Reformed Church, in Lebanon, PA, a position he held until 1954. Pierce Swope spent much of his lifetime furthering the cause of the Pennsylvania German dialect and culture. The first (and perhaps the only) person licensed to teach PA Dutch in public schools, he taught the Dialect in the Lebanon High School and, Charles J Breidinger Broker Benjamin Real Estate 2254 Skyline Dr. Slatington, PA 18080 Office 610-767-1293 Cell 484-951-2468 Fax 610-767-9488 cjbreidinger@gmail.com www.bhhsbre.com Text: bhhscjb to: 87778

more especially, evening classes at Hershey, the latter resulting in the founding of Hershey's annual folkfestival, the Pennsylvania Dutch Days. He was constantly in demand as a speaker in, as well as about, the Dialect. He wrote a column in Pennsylvania German for the Lebanon Daily News, under the pen name, Kaspar Hufnagel (Horseshoe Nail) from 1948 to 1962. In 1949 the Ephrata Ensign also began carrying his column. Swope was still active at 84, lecturing and writing on the heritage of the Pennsylvania Germans, when the Lebanon County Historical Society published a booklet containing some of his columns and a few of his poems. He died on the 9th December 1968 at the UCC Home at Annville.]

Travel Safety Tips for Pets BEFORE YOU HIT THE ROAD Before you set out on a long summer adventure with family and pets, there are a few things you might want to take care of in your pre-trip preparations. To start, make sure your pets are up-to-date with their vaccinations, as well as their flea, tick and heartworm treatments to keep them well protected when you travel. It’s also very smart to microchip your pet – in addition to collar and tags. A microchip – about the size of a grain of rice – contains all the key information about your pet, as well as your contact information and truly can help reunite you with your pet if it gets away while you’re traveling. PACK THEIR BAGS Be sure and pack a bag for your pet! Bring along extra collars, leashes and toys, as well as food and water bowls – and don’t forget the water. Water is something you might not give too much thought to, but water content changes from city to city so to prevent digestive upset it’s a good idea to either bring bottled water or bottled tap water from home. Just in case, bring a list of their medications, as well as other key medical information, and one or two pictures of you with your pet. You might even do a little research to locate a qualified veterinarian near your destination.

AUTO TRAVEL TRIPS There are two very important things to remember when you are traveling in a vehicle and have your pet along for the ride: Distraction Prevention and Crash Protection.Your pet can be a major and often sudden distraction. To help avoid this, ensure that your pet is safely harnessed in the back seat of your vehicle. Not all harnesses are the same.
