FROM THE PUBLISHER’S DESK

INSIDE THIS ISSUE

I’m so excited for this issue; we decided to do something different. So if you’re looking for something to do this summer we’ve got you covered. From camping to day trips, even booking a cruise. I’m sure you’ll love this issue as much as we do. I’d also like to welcome Lacey Remaley to the team, you can reach her directly at lremaley@idpcreative. com. She will be a big help because we are expanding our coverage area to New Tripoli, so keep an eye out for us if you’re in the area, our presence is growing. Just a reminder now that summer has finally arrived. Never leave your pet in the car, on a 78-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 100 and 120 degrees in just minutes, and on a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 160 degrees in less than 10 minutes. When walking your dog, keep in mind that if it feels hot enough to fry an egg outside, it probably is. When the air temperature is 86 degrees, the asphalt can reach a sizzling 135 degrees — more than hot enough to cook an egg in five minutes. And it can do the same to our canine companions’ sensitive foot pads. Enjoy this issue and have a great summer. -Kathy Marsh

Northern Lehigh Teachers Honored submitted by WANDA OWENS

Tuesday June 13, 2017 was a very special day at the Slatington Public Library. Northern Lehigh Teachers were honored with a plate on the Louise Hallman Memorial Plaque. This plaque offers the community a unique opportunity to recognize family, friends, or groups by donating one thousand dollars to the library. Marc Grammes , an alumni of the Northern Lehigh School District, wanted to show his appreciation for the wonderful teachers past and present in Northern Lehigh Schools. He wanted everyone to know how lucky our community is to have dedicated teachers educating our children. Teachers can have a profound influence on our formative years, and he felt that this recognition was long overdue. Retired Northern Lehigh Educators Hali Kuntz, Renee Evans, and Lynne Fedorcha participated in the recognition event. Marc and his wife Elizabeth live in Slatedale, and he is a former board member of the Slatington Public Library and a candidate for Lehigh County Commissioner. The Slatington Public Library Board and Staff thank Marc for his donation to our library. We are grateful to everyone who participated in this worthy program. Please take a moment to view the plaque when you visit the library.

Schleicher’s Schleicher's Family Restaurant The Schleicher family would like to thank the community and faithful customers of New Tripoli and surrounding areas for all the wonderful years we had as the owners of Schleicher's Family Restaurant. With that being said we are excited that we found the right people to take over our business. The Pittas family, also the owners of the Schnecksville Diner, will be taking over our business next month. Their goal is to make some immediate changes to the structure of our business, our parking lot, and to enhance our menu – no need to be concerned because Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking will stay. The Pittas family has a successful track record in the industry. Prior to the Schnecksville Diner they owned and operated the Pied Piper Restaurant in Trexlertown for many years.

Massage has proven health benefits, such as effectiveness in treating persistent back pain, wrist and elbow issues (carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, golfers elbow symptoms), and feet pain (plantar fascilitis symptoms). It also helps strengthen the immune system and encourages a better night's sleep. Consumer research shows first-time massage therapy clients report very positive feelings about their experience. Consumers can enjoy peace of mind knowing ABMP members meet state licensing and education requirements, as well as adhering to the ABMP code of ethics. Rentschler Chevrolet Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Continues To Make A Difference In Their Community For additional information about the NLRA programs, please call Mike Kukitz at 484-633-0093 or by email at NLRecAuthority@gmail.com About the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority:

Rentschler Chevrolet Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram recently provided a generous donation to the Northern Lehigh Community Center Committee. Having the support of community leaders such as the Rentschler family is a crucial element for making a difference in small rural towns! The idea to complete a Community Center for Northern Lehigh residents has been in discussions for nearly twenty years. Recently, the boroughs of Walnutport, Slatington, and Washington Township made a commitment to not only improve the area’s park and recreation services by creating the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority, but is looking to finish the construction of a Community Center as well. The creation of Northern Lehigh Recreation has reenergized much of the town with regards to completing the Center. This new multi-municipal Authority is in the process of absorbing the past Community Center Committee programs and events in addition to the land for the future Community Center. Rentschler Chevrolet Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram has voiced the need for this type of facility and continue to show support for projects that will improve the Northern Lehigh area making it a better place to live, work and play. They are a family run business whose actions are truly commendable!

The Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority (NLRA) was formed in 2016 as a new and exciting multi-municipal partnership between Washington Township and the Borough of Slatington. The NLRA looks to finish the Northern Lehigh Community Center, which will be a thriving active, beautifully renovated facility serving over 10,000 individuals each year. The NLRA will also add programs, events, and opportunities throughout the area’s expansive park system and improve and enhance shared community resources among the two municipalities. The mission of the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority is to provide a diverse range of recreational and educational programs and activities that promote a strong sense of community.

Summer Vacation Safety Terry Hurley, www.safety.lovetoknow.com

As the warm weather approaches and thoughts turn to getting away for a few days, being safe while on summer vacation helps ensure that you and your loved ones only have good memories of your time away from home. There are many things you can do to keep yourself, your family and your valuables safe. Summer Vacation Safety Starts Before You Leave Home Make copies of all of your credit cards, important identification information, including your medical insurance cards, and your traveler's checks. Take one copy with you (pack it separately from the cards themselves) and leave one copy at home. Take only a little cash with you. Bring most of your money in the form of traveler's checks or plan to use your credit cards while on vacation. Never put your home address on your luggage tags. Write your phone number instead. Make sure all of the doors and windows to your home are secured and locked. If your home has an alarm system, arm it when you leave for your vacation. Never post your travel plans on social networks such as Facebook, MySpace or Twitter.

A Little World for Big Thinkers!

Have your mail held at the post office and your newspaper delivery put on hold or ask a family member, a trusted friend or neighbor to pick those items up for you. Set automatic timers to turn your lights and a radio on and off. Protect Your Valuables and Yourself Park your car in areas that are well lit and as close to your destination as possible. Always close all of the windows and lock the car doors. Keep all valuables out of view by locking them in the trunk, tucking them under the seat or placing on the floor and covering them with a blanket. Never leave your wallet, pocketbook or checkbook in the car. Always keep them with you. If you are driving and become lost, do not stop on the side of the road to check the map. Drive to a brightly lit, public place to do so. Never leave your car unattended with the motor running. If you are going out sightseeing, ask at the hotel front desk if there are any areas you should avoid. Only take the cash you need for the day with you. Leave the rest, and all other valuables, locked in the hotel or motel safe. Continued on page 16

Summer Vacation Safety Continued from page 14

Never display large amounts of cash when making a purchase. The money you keep with you should be in small denominations. When you check into your room, make a mental note of the locations of the stairs and fire exits. Protection from the Sun Whether you are traveling to a tropical beach or a snow-covered mountain, there are things you can do to keep your skin and eyes safe from the dangers of the sun. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UV-A and UV-B radiation from the sun. It should have an SPF rating of 15 or higher. Apply the sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply it often. Always reapply the sunscreen after swimming or any physical activity. According to the American Optometric Association you should wear sunglasses whenever you are outside in the sun. The minimum requirements for proper protection for your eyes are sunglasses that screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light and block at least 99 percent of UV-A and UV-B radiation from the sun’s rays. If you are taking any medications, check with

your doctor or pharmacist to make sure that they do not cause photosensitivity, which makes you more susceptible to skin damage from the ultraviolet light of the sun. Water Safety Only swim at beaches that are supervised by lifeguards. Even if there are life guards on duty, never leave a child unattended at a beach or pool. If you are swimming in the ocean and are caught in a rip tide or a current, call for help and swim diagonally across it or with it until you get free. Never try to get free of the current by swimming against it. Whenever you are on a boat wear a life jacket that is Coast Guard approved. If you have been drinking any alcoholic beverages, stay out of the water. Do not operate a boat, jet ski or any other type of water craft. Relax and Have Fun By following summer vacation safety tips and procedures, you reduce the chances of having your good times spoiled. Knowing you are doing everything you need to do to ensure your safety and the safety of your loved ones gives you peace of mind as you relax and have fun.

Outdoor Safety Tips www.playsafe.org

Outdoor play is all about being active, burning up that excess energy, and having fun! It’s also a time for kids to explore their physical abilities—and limits—in a safe environment. Here are a few tips for families to consider while playing outside: Make adult supervision a crucial part of outdoor play. Kids should never be left alone near inflatable "kiddie" pools, swimming pools, beaches, lakes and other bodies of water. Toys should be kept out of kids’ reach and away from water when they’re not being used so little ones aren’t tempted to play in or near the water alone. Always keep toys away from unsupervised areas like driveways and streets with traffic so they don’t lure a child into a dangerous situation. Make sure your kids wear helmets, knee pads and other protective gear when playing with all ride-on toys, including bicycles, tricycles, scooters, skateboards and skates. For more bike safety tips, including how to check if a helmet fits properly, visit the U.S. Consumer Product Safety website. Outdoor play areas should offer some shaded cover (when it’s practical) to protect kids’ sensitive skin from the sun’s intense rays. Children should wear appropriate sun protection (sunscreen, News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || JULY 6, 2017

clothing, hats, sunglasses) to avoid overexposure while they play. Make sure your kids drink plenty of fluids during and after play to keep them hydrated. Organize and store toys to prevent slips, trips and falls. If you have access to a garage or outdoor shed, you can designate “parking” spaces for bikes and other ride-on toys, and store smaller items like skateboards and skates on shelves.

22 Cheap or Free Things To Do This Summer Hillary White, www.popsugar.com

When we think of childhood Summers, we think of balmy nights chasing fireflies, walking barefoot on hot sand, and hours of fun that didn’t cost a thing. Just because we’re adults doesn’t mean we have to drop a ton of money to celebrate our favorite season! There are endless activities you can do this Summer, and we’ve rounded up ones that you’ll love when you’re feeling lazy, when you’re ready to get a workout, or when you’re in search of an adventure. The best part is they will barely cost you a thing! 1. Go to a free music festival. 2. Make potpourri from seasonal flowers. 3. Catch fireflies. 4. Do a walking tour of your city. 5. Pick strawberries. 6. Go stargazing on a warm Summer night. 7. Set up a lemonade stand in your neighborhood. 8. Blow bubbles. 9. Make guilt-free popsicles. 10. Wash your car. 11. Pick wildflowers. 12. Take a road trip to the nearest beach or lake. 13. Ride a bike. 14. Go canoeing. 15. Practice yoga in a park. 16. Visit relatives. 17. Create cool things with flower DIYs.

18. Throw a BBQ for friends and family. 19. Take a day hiking trip. 20. Attend a parade. 21. Play minigolf. 22. Make fun things with old pool noodles.

Fun Summer Learning Tips familieslearning.org

The learning shouldn’t stop just because the school days do. Here are some suggestions for fun educational summer activities: Tie family outings to books. Create an activity around a book that you read with your child. Have the child look at the pictures and tell the story in his or her own words or create a song about the book. Then, follow up with a related outing. If the book is about animals, take a trip to the zoo or the park. Go to the beach or a lake if the book has scenes taking place near or on the water. Ask your children to illustrate stories and engage them in dialogue about their artwork. Keep an album of their artwork so the family can continue to talk about it and so children can see their progress. Take advantage of the warm weather and grow a garden together. You don’t need a large space — even a window garden will suffice. Pick flowers or vegetables that will grow quickly so children can see fast progress. Bring science home by borrowing science experiment books from the library and then trying them together. Pick some that take advantage of the warm weather. Make summer car trips educational. Play games where children count objects, match shapes or colors that they can see from the car windows. Sing with young children every day to help them make transitions. Make up songs that talk about daily activities such as waking up in the morning, walking down the street, going to the store or going to the beach. This can help prepare them for participating in family activities and even for making the transition to attend school.

Little World Makes a Big Difference Imagi Nation - A Little World for Big Thinkers In a world where everything is kid-size, a child’s hard work and ambition can prove to be enormous when playing with a purpose. Children who have visited Imagi Nation since its opening in October have taken on the roles of doctors, news anchors, fire fighters and police officers not only for pretend play, but also to make a real difference in their community. Children are given 20 Biznis Bucks, the currency of Imagi Nation, upon entrance to the pint-size city which they run. They are “paid” an additional 10 Biznis Bucks for each job they complete, however not all occupations yield a paycheck. Positions such as customer or patient require them to manage their money wisely in order to afford things like groceries at the Market or check-ups in the Health & Dental Center. When children earn 50 Biznis Bucks, they are eligible to open a Savings Account and keep track of their earnings as they explore more than 40 different careers. At the conclusion of their visit they make a decision to invest their money and receive interest on a return visit, or donate to one of 3 local charities: American Red Cross Lehigh Valley

Educating Imagi Nation visitors donate their Biznis Bucks. children in financial literacy is one goal of the Biznis Bucks program, however owner Wendy Pitts had another idea in mind when creating the concept. “In a ‘selfie-centered’ world, we wanted to provide children with an opportunity to think about the needs of others and experience the joy of giving rather than receiving.” By the end of the first quarter, industrious visitors have earned the local causes over $1,200 and will likely surpass that amount for the next quarter. Imagi Nation is the Lehigh Valley’s first educational entertainment experience for children with an emphasis on social skill development. Imagi Nation specializes in imaginative play, school field trips, birthday parties, private events, special family events and corporate team building sessions. Visit http://www. imaginationexp.com for more information. A Little World for Big Thinkers ©. For the first quarter 2017, Imagi Nation kids donated over $1,200 to Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley, American Red Cross Lehigh ValleyBucks Chapter and St. Luke’s Hospice children’s bereavement programs.

Cherryville Seniors Beat Out Northampton Seniors At Olympic Games

At the senior olympic games held in the scenic city of Bangor on Friday the 9th of June the Village of Cherryville seniors beat out their longtime rivals from Northampton Senior Center. Centers from Slate Belt, Bethlehem, Bath, and other medal winners were: Slate Belt with 41 medals, Cherryville with 31, Northampton with 22, and Old York from Bethlehem coming away with 19 medals. Hurray Slate Belt! The winner of the wheel chair toss was a man from Tin Buck Too who threw his wheel chair for a distance of 13 feet and 16 inches. However, on landing the left wheel broke, after removing the bent wheel he could only go in circles, go left young man go left. He was last seen going around Pocono race track where he qualified for the third row in this weekend’s race. Good luck to Minaburer Jones.

The walker toss was won by Diana Love with a throw of 18 feet 21 inches, however she hit and broke the wind shield of the Lanta bus. Her comment was they should not park in the parking lot! The walking cane toss was won (we think) by Bonnie Confer who heaved her cane so far it landed in Blue Mountain Lake and was last seen being used by a wide mouth bass heading to the center of the lake. A reward has been offered. All senior centers are open for new participants on a daily basis. Come in for Uno, Pinochle, Rummy, or other games while enjoying snacks and a beverage. Cherryville has penny bingo three times a week. A good meal is served every day but must be ordered a day in advance. Bus trips run to interesting places and casinos. Hope to see you and your friends there. For information on any center give Karen a call at 610-767-2977.

If I could choose one place, Then it would be in the old house, Where my parents and we children all have gone in and out; It would not be in the parlor there, It would be in the old kitchen, And to sit there like long ago At the old long table. The whole family, ten in all – It was not a modern version; They were prompt at meal time, There was no fooling around: In an orderly manner every member occupies His own little place, Yet first with head bowed, spoke His little prayer. The table was always covered With pretty and good things, There were cucumbers and lettuce,

Touch of Dutch Continued from page 37

Kidneys and haslet [edible organs] Pig stomach with pigs ribs Is the best thing. Ham and tenderloin, You cannot find anything better; Bacon and pork loin Won the working man; Suckers, chubs and sunnies, Father caught these; Ducks, chickens, turkey, and geese Satisfies your desires.

Rabbits, groundhogs, and pheasants, Scrapple and baloney, Beans, peas, rivel soup, Rice and macaroni; Custards, tarts and large pies, Fifty styles and more; Roasted rye coffee, the rye flavoring in it, Chocolate, Postum [also from grains], tea. Cottage cheese and limburger cheese, How it smells so strong; Applesauce and apple butter, Honey in the honeycomb; Quince jam and quartered apples, Molasses rather black, Good butter, jelly yet, And things with spices. A bread basket loaf, baked outside In the large old baking oven, With a sweet crust created by the wood ashes, That excelled over everything else; Restaurants and boarding houses Have fare, good and fresh; Yet give me, if it would be possible, Mother’s table! [You probably noticed the poem uses some German words; where I could, I had also substituted in Dutch ones, if it did not alter the metrics or rhyme.]
