A Quick History of Father’s Day Father’s Day is a day of honoring fatherhood and paternal bonds, as well as the influence of fathers in society. In Catholic countries of Europe, it has been celebrated on March 19 as Saint Joseph’s Day since the Middle Ages. Father’s Day is celebrated in many parts of the world at different times of the year, often in the months of March, May and June. Our nation's first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. However, it was not until 1972, fifty-eight years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother's Day official that the day honoring fathers became a nationwide holiday in the United States. Father's Day 2020 occurs on Sunday, June 21.

Becky’s opening submitted by Cindy Deppe written by Danielle Hummel Gower
A dream and a hankering for the movies was all that was needed to "drive" William D. Beck (known to all as Becky) into the field as a full-fledged CinePhotographer and projectionist. With a love for film, and a desire to share, Becky started showing movies in his parent's living room. Using a hung bed-sheet, Charlie Chaplin often graced this home-made movie screen. This is about when it all began. Between the years 1936-1939, Becky began taking his movies from site to site, showing films at numerous locations; Uncle Charlie's Restaurant, Minnich's Restaurant, and at the baseball field (now known as Bryfogle Memorial Park). In 1942, Becky had an indoor theater "Midway" located in East Mauch Chunk, PA. "The Bucket of Blood" was the nickname earned to that theater due to all the westerns shown there. Becky was especially fond of westerns. It wasn't until 1946 that Route 45 Drive-In opened at it's present day Becky's location. With help from his wife Alice, and numerous family members, Route 45 Drive-In (then named for the road it was located on) was a success. Around 1971 the state of PA changed the highway number from Route 45 to Route 248. Becky continued to upgrade his business advertising in-car speakers to accommodate 450 cars. A concession stand delivered smells of Alice's fresh cut french fries. From hamburgers and hot dogs to penny candy and pretzel rods, Becky could provide a dinner out or just satisfying a sweet tooth. There was a playground for the children, free pony rides, and bands playing certain nights. You could say it was the "ticket" for entertainment. Becky's generosity took him distances showing movies in parks, community halls, fire companies, elementary schools, American legions, VFW's, Sr.
citizen groups, and county homes only to mention a few. He also traveled around PA, VA, MD, and OH, showing education short subjects to students in one room schoolhouses. The grounds were lent for benefits for Lehigh Township Fire Co. and the American Legion. Becky died on April 4, 1987, and his wife, Alice, passed away on December 28, 2007. She was preceded in death by their second eldest son, Dale, March 28, 1997. The four surviving children of Becky and Alice continue to operate the drive-in along with their families, showing family films starting April to mid-October. They include sons Darrell and Dennis, daughters Mary Mayberry and Cindy Deppe and their spouses, Joe and Dean. Some of the grandchildren get into the act as well. They include: Wanda Beck, Sean Beck, Scott Beck, Christopher Deppe, and Nicholas Deppe, great grandchildren Michael Marino, and Julian Deppe. They are assisted by long time employees, Marc Hillenbrand, Tim Minnich, Dave Clark, Marcelle Deppe, Duane Deppe, and Marlene Kriner, to name a few.
Slatington Library Reading Challenge The reading challenge donation of two $25.00 cash prizes honoring Donald Owens has been continued until October 30, 2020 due to the COVID-19 library closure. In order to stimulate reading during this stressful time there will be two additional $25.00 cash prizes added to the challenge for a total of $100.00 in prize awards. Slatington Public Library Patrons will receive one chance to win, with every 10 books read. We welcome children and adults to take part in this reading contest. The Slatington Public Library is hoping that this reading challenge will promote its mission of literacy in the Northern Lehigh Community. Happy Reading!

Some Thoughts about Fathers "I believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren't trying to teach us. We are formed by the little scraps of wisdom." --- Umberto Eco “Every father should remember one day his son will follow his example, not his advice.” --- Charles Kettering “My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. The Family Reunion This is the time of Year, in the pleasant summer, The time for family reunions; there we must go; Having waited an entire year to see again, The Old and Young, the big and small. We are a family, going long, long back, Our ancestors tried their luck In a land so new, so green, and so strange, And so now you can see where I am coming from. One has said, proudly throw out the chests. Yes, that one knows how to praise his family. And we are proud today of our family and country. And reunions make us become more acquainted with one another. Now, what makes the family? This we must ask. Is it the home, where we live, and eat and sleep, Where we sit, before the fire, passing the time, And tell one another what happened today? Or is it the father, hardworking and true,
He gives us the best things in life, Or the mother-- on her knee She taught many things about the right way to live. Or is it the children, full of devilish misbehavior? We must punish them, and must love them along this long road To lead them to their destination with good knowledge, Better men and women for our great country. Well, here we all are, we look so nice, All dressed up, well fed, what more could we want? We talk, and sing and play, and laugh To help make the reunion a good one. We remind each other of things forgotten, And talk of farming, good things to eat, Of horses and cows, and good sausage And we speak from drinking, but nothing from thirst. Oh! What a pleasure, the handshakes and blabbering. I must speak to this one, and that one, now quickly. Must ask that one, "Well, how is the wife?"

He tells me his life story and I also tell mine. One calls one "Charlie," that is not his name. The wife always has to remind us. And we talk, and complain, and ask so much About so many things that really are not our business. Now comes the time to unpack the food. The cheese, and the eggs, and so many good things. We smell, our mouth watering, and we can't wait To eat from our mother's garden. There are so many new faces, and some known for long, They come from the city, and many from the country, They are lawyers, doctors, farmers, and clerks, They are industrious, and honest, have made their mark. And today we must not forget our soldiers, so noble. The Country, forever united, upright and free, Our hearts, they bleed; and I also believe That if the great army called, no one will stay behind.
Oh! Let's not be troubled by yesterday-- that is gone. And what comes tomorrow, we have yet to learn. Let us enjoy today in company so happy, A large family, still blessed in reunion. And we live in the hope, that this time next year, We will come together again, just as happy as before. And if that cannot be, and some of us miss it, Then we can understand, that it is just the way life goes. For there will come a time, on a glorious day In a grand reunion, where we may surely find Every mother, every father, and friends and relatives as well. A great family-- in Eternal Rest. [Some people call a family reunion, Zammelaaf, but that’s more generic for any social gathering, so I chose the German term, Famillye-dreffe.]

SUMMER FUN 2020: Road Trips, RVs and Outdoor Adventures
By John Hall, Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette
Summer fun 2020 is likely to be a little different than in other years. As we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown here in Pennsylvania, things have changed. With air travel not particularly recommended and vacation destinations operating in new and often more limited ways, literally “hitting the road” will be more appealing and more the norm than ever. Day trips in the family car or longer trips in a rented RV will be much more common, allowing for the adventure and the ability to be safely distanced. According to recent research conducted for the
RV Industry Association, 46 million Americans are planning to take an RV trip in the next 12 months. RVShare and Outdoorsy, two sources for RV rentals, both report growth more than doubling over last year. At the local level, Dave Pierson, general manager at RV Value Mart in Bath, PA says after a few weeks of downtime at the start of the pandemic, inventory is back up and ready to meet the summer demand. If you hit the road in an RV to see some of our area’s natural wonders like Pine Creek Gorge, sometimes called The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania over near Wellsboro, you and your traveling

companions will be able to avoid crowds, have a bathroom onboard and have the ability to prep your meals wherever the roads take you. Safe Outdoor Adventures Safe outdoor adventures are also very doable. Jerry McAward, president of Jim Thorpe River Adventures and the Lehighton Outdoor Center explains, “Everything we do is outdoors.” The company focuses on kayaking, rafting and biking adventures. “On the surface, everything appears to be socially distant,” says McAward, “and the activity itself is – that’s correct.” McAward notes that many guests that come from crowded areas like New York and
New Jersey are very concerned about crowding and being close to other people they don’t know. Sharing their concern, the company has reengineered its procedures this year with guest safety top of mind. As an example, only groups that arrive together go onto a single raft for their adventure. Also, guests now bike to their rafting adventure start points and walk a quarter-mile back to the Outdoor Center when the raft adventure ends. In spite of the pandemic situation, McAward says, “Summer 2020 might be the most popular summer in our memory to get out and do something.”There are plenty of summer options to enjoy. Staying Safe: Summer Adventures in the Virus Era As summer arrives, the outdoors calls to us, and Pennsylvania’s stay-at-home pandemic restrictions continue to ease, many of us want to get out for a good hike, a camping adventure or some other outdoor activity. And we will. That said we still have to keep certain coronavirus risk factors in mind when we do. According to the CDC, the virus still typically spreads via droplets when people are in close proximity to others for a sustained period of time and someone in the group is sick, whether or not they are showing symptoms. So we have to remember four key things that are known to raise the risk of our catching the virus as the summer fun begins. One is enclosed spaces and of course this is where outdoor activities have the advantage. We also need to avoid crowds, close contact with others and lastly, any situation where it is difficult to maintain social distancing. Social distancing can be the most variable factor depending on your activity and how likely you are to cross paths with others. This chart from Business Insider rates the four key exposure risk factors for eight typical outdoor summer activities. Some are definitely lower risk than others. So keep it all in mind, stay safe and enjoy your summer fun!

Take a Backyard Family “Staycation” The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has changed what summer vacations are going to look like this year. This year, many family summer-fun activities might be found right in your own backyard – literally! Here are just a few ideas to get your backyard family “staycation” started:
BACKYARD CAMPING Set up a mini campsite right in your own backyard. Get out the camping gear or borrow a tent if you don't have one, make s'mores (use the microwave if your area doesn’t allow campfires), and tell some
spooky stories. It’s a perfect way to introduce little ones to the concept of camping, with the safety net of still being at home. DIY WATER PARK There might not be any water park trips this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t let the kids – and the adults – cool off with a DIY backyard version. Set up the sprinkler, get a Slip ‘n Slide, fill up the Super Soakers and let the splashing begin. Water balloons are also allowed. MOVIE NIGHT You can host an outdoor movie night right in the backyard as well. Rent a projector, hang a sheet on the fence or the back of the house and you will be good to go. Then select your favorite movie, pop the popcorn and settle in for some “cinema under the stars.” SKY EXPLORER On a clear night, lay down a nice blanket, lie back and use your eyes to become a sky explorer. There will be a lot of stars and sparkle up there. Find the Moon, The Big Dipper, The Little Dipper, and maybe see a shooting star. A telescope or binoculars will only add to the fun.
Do you have a cute pet? We’d love to see it!
Send a picture in and 1 lucky pet will grace the cover (vertical pictures please) of our July 16 pet issue.
Pictures must be transmitted to us electronically before July 3.
Pet Photo COntest
Send pictures to both kmarsh@townandcountrygazette.com (Kathy) and jhall@townandcountrygazette.com (John) and include the following: Your name and your phone number (so we can contact you if you are the winner) and your pet’s name. The winning picture will be published in our July 16 issue and the winner will be notified at that time. Enter to win! 16

HIT THE BEACH Sand, beach chairs, umbrellas, little shovels and maybe a wading pool.Yes, you and the kids can hit the beach in your own backyard this summer. Bring in enough sand so the little ones can build sand castles and everyone will have a great time. Don’t forget the sunscreen! DIY MINI GOLF It is pretty easy to create a mini-golf course right in your own backyard using things you have around the house. Pinterest has all kinds of homemade mini-golf course ideas to inspire. Use your imagination and you’ll have as much fun creating it as playing it! To make your staycation activities feel even more vacation-like, have everyone disconnect from their phones and social media as much as you can (go for 100%).

Fishing is a rewarding sport. By nature it is a reflective and meditative activity that forces you to slow down and enjoy your surroundings. Why do people fish? They do it for many reasons. Some fish just for food, some for sport and others just want an excuse to be outside or get together with friends. No matter what brings them out any fisherman can tell you how relaxing it is to spend a morning or evening fishing. It is a perfect summer activity. In addition, the calming qualities of fishing have
made it a popular therapeutic exercise for counselors and therapists who work with veterans, people with chronic illnesses and others who have experienced trauma. Studies have shown that war veterans experienced lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol for up to three weeks after a weekend fishing trip. Because fishing requires focus, experts claim it helps take a person’s mind off internal conflict and allows for a healthy escape from stress, depression, and anxiety.

Rescue a Friend She’s still looking for her forever home! Pepper Pit Bull Terrier Mix Catasauqua Adult Female Large Sponsor Pepper House-trained: Yes Health: Vaccinations up to date, spayed / neutered, special needs. Prefers a home without other dogs, cats.
Meet Pepper
Are you looking for “the one”? That soul mate. Are you active? Need a little spice in your life? When you come home from a hard day of work, don’t you want a snuggle buddy to tell your troubles to? If you answered yes, then we have the sweetheart for you-Pepper! If ever there was a soul that’s been through it all-it’s this doll baby. Miss Pepper was found abandoned, malnourished. And has had three surgeries to boot. But she’s made a come back greater than Cher’s. Pepper is looking for a special forever home. One that will continue training, so she can be the best Pepper she can be. A home where she’ll be your one and only. Pepper isn’t fantastic with other furry creatures. She gets a little over zealous. But honestly, she’s all you’ll ever need. So, if you have room in your home, your heart and on your couch for this rock star, fill out our
adoption application right away! Pepper is waiting for you! If you are over 21 and live within 2 hours of the Lehigh Valley, PA area please consider Pepper as your new family member. Apply to adopt at www.outcastrescue.com
