St. Peter’s UMC Events Submitted by PAT FRITZ
Hi, we are still here and busier than ever. Helping Hands Ministry has been growing by leaps and bounds. What is Helping Hands you may ask? Helping Hands is a Food collection and distribution Ministry. Some of our largest Food partners are B&G Foods, Food Connection and Trader Joes. We supply over 30 different Food Banks, churches, etc. as far away as Nescopeck and as close as our own Northern Lehigh Food Bank. We are in the community to serve the community. Helping Hands is coordinated by Pastor Bill and Pat Fritz. We are seeking volunteers willing to help with pick- ups and unloading. If you feel you would like to help or would like to learn more about our ministry please contact Pastor Bill at 610-737-1450 and see where we can plug you in. We are coming up on our One (1) year Anniversary of Helping Hands Community Center, located at Main and Chestnut St in Parryville. At this time the Center hosts Lifetree Café on Saturday evenings from 5pm-6pm. The Café is open to all people for an hour of stories and conversation to feed your soul. The Community Center is also available for area groups to use. A small fee may apply. For
more information or to schedule use please contact St. Peters UMC office at 610-767-6233. At Saint Peter’s each Wednesday during Lent you are invited to fellowship and share a meal at 5:30pm followed by our Lenten service at 7PM. A History Built on Slate Source: www.slatington.org
Located across from Walnutport on the west side of the Lehigh River, Slatington became the center of the region’s Slate industry. In its heyday, slate was used for everything from durable roofing shingles to chalk boards in schools. The Lehigh Slate Company‘s quarries, in and around Slatington, were among the largest in the U.S., and furnished some of the country’s highest quality slate. But a large portion of Slatington’s growth and success is also directly tied to the opening of the Lehigh Canal, and the ease of shipping that resulted. The town further blossomed when the railroad was built in the late 19th century. Today’s traditional downtown, with large Victorian homes, is a reminder of the commerce generated by the canal, railroad and slate industry. Elaborate slate roofs display the beauty of this local building material, which was once shipped as far away as British Columbia and used to adorn the capital building in the Canadian province. Slatington’s streetscape artifacts are closely tied to the story of extraction, processing, transporting and marketing of slate. (Source: Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor)

Palmerton An expansive town park, a community pool, a growing library, and Residence Park (the region's most beautiful turn-of the-century neighborhood) continue to make Palmerton an outstanding example of everything a small town should be. Merchants still sell hardware, sporting goods, jewelry, groceries and clothing along Palmerton's wide main street. Numerous annual events take place in Palmerton. They include a Rolling Cruise in June, Sidewalk Sales in August and a Community Festival in September. The Palmerton Area Historical Society has well-organized, extensive archives of local photos and artifacts at the Borough Hall and the Heritage Center on Delaware Avenue. Appalachian Trail hikers know Palmerton as a friendly place to stay over at the Neighborhood House (present day Borough Hall). To understand Palmerton's past and why it exists today, think zinc. Palmerton was founded in 1898 largely because of its closeness to anthracite, the Lehigh Canal and the railroads. Zinc mines were in Franklin, New Jersey as well.
In the late 19th century, the New Jersey Zinc Co. consolidated regional operations here. In 1917, the world's largest zinc research and technology center opened. Palmerton became a "company town," a model community with well-planned and plentiful housing, educational and cultural opportunities, and good medical care for the residents who enjoyed the many benefits derived from New Jersey Zinc's social policies. The history of Palmerton is generally considered to have begun in 1898. In that year, the New Jersey Zinc Company located a zinc smelting operation (what is now the West Plant) here in order to take

Walnutport Source: www.walnutport.org
Walnutport is a borough formed from an unincorporated settlement in the northwest corner of Northampton County. This area was established by the formation of Lehigh Township in 1754 by land grants from William Penn’s heirs in 1752 forming Northampton County. The first settlers were German immigrants who cleared the land, raised livestock, and established their homesteads. Many of the descendents of these early settlers would later become prominent businessmen and politicians. In the 1820’s the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company built the Lehigh Canal. Farmland was sold and would support the canal businesses along the Lehigh River and Canal area. From the 1840’s to the 1860’s many business and homes were built to support the canal trade in the area. The Lehigh and Susquehanna Railroad were opened through Walnutport in 1867 and required additional manpower. More homes and businesses were established to support the thriving transportation business. From the 1870’s to the early 1900’s the area gradually grew and its

citizens wanted their own local governing body. In 1908 the area around Walnutport petitioned the courts to become a borough. Walnutport became a borough in 1909 separating itself from Lehigh Township. Walnutport was always a transportation hub with the canal railroads, and highways, because of its proximity south of Lehigh Gap along the Lehigh River. From the 1950’s to the 1980’s most of the land was developed as many people and siblings of pervious landowners build homes. Walnutport now has many businesses and townhouses. The number of housing units has grown from 150 in 1910 to over 800 in 2008. The Borough of Walnutport has a population of 2,043 at the 2000 census. The Diamond Fire Company was organized in 1893 and continues to protect the Borough with its modern equipment and trained volunteers. The WCA (Walnutport Canal association) actively works on restoration projects such as improvements to trails, parking, pavilion facilities and the Lock Tender’s House. The WPA (Walnutport Playground Association) supports and manages athletic programs at the three athletic fields. The newly reestablished Recreation Board manages the recreation center and the pavilion. The Annual Canal Festival held each fall (3rd Sunday in October) and the Annual WPA Carnival held each summer (July) provides for fun and entertainment and raises funds to assist in their efforts.

Northampton History The Borough of Northampton as we know it today was originally part of Allen Township. Thanks to new evolving transportation systems of the 19th century and the newly erected cement industry, three separate villages sprang up in close proximity along the Lehigh River. By 1902, the villages had gained enough population to come together as a separate borough. The first of these Allen Township villages was Siegfried's Ferry, so named because it was the home of the only method of crossing the Lehigh River north of present-day Allentown, after 1750. Siegfried's Ferry arose out of the interesting transportation systems of roadway and river. Eventually the ferry was replaced with a covered bridge and the name changed to Siegfried's Bridge, then later just Siegfried. It was located between what is now 19th and 24th streets in current Northampton. Siegfried was named for Colonel John Siegfried, the second owner of the ferry, who became a great
example of a self-made man in the true American tradition. He was revered in Northampton County for his economic prowess and community spirit, which included leading the county militia during the American Revolution and donating land, along with a few neighbors, to build the first subscription school in what is Northampton in 1794. Col. John Siegfried was a friend of General George Washington and participated in numerous Revolutionary War battles. He is remembered in the old Mennonite cemetery on West 21st Street in Northampton. The second village was named Newport. In the

1820s, canals became a great way to move goods and people quickly and cheaply. The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Canal was constructed alongside the only privately held river in the United States, the Lehigh River. Ownership of the river was granted to the LCN Co. by the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1829 order to get the canal built so coal could be moved to Philadelphia. To unload the coal or the northbound goods, a new port was created along the banks of the canal

and the Lehigh River. The name of the village became Newport. It was a small village of less than 25 families for most of the 19th century until five cement plants would be built here. After 1895, thousands of immigrants from all over Eastern Europe came to work in the new plants. The third village to be created by a new transportation system was Stemton. It was created after the completion of the Lehigh & Susquehanna Railroad in 1867. It also ran alongside the Lehigh River on the east side of the canal. George and William Stem of Coplay moved across the river to construct the Lehigh Car Manufacturing Company, which made wooden cars for the new railroad line. This village was created along Main Street between was in now 5th and 10th Streets in the current Northampton. The brothers laid out a village for the workers and became prominent citizens of Allen Township. When the Central Railroad of New Jersey leased the Lehigh & Susquehanna, the Stem brothers were denied access to the tracks for their railroad cars by the term of the lease. Forced into making farm implements and wagons, the village survived but never achieved its full measure of development until the arrival of the Atlas Portland Cement Company in 1895. The Atlas was soon joined by the Lawrence Portland Cement Company and gave the township a population explosion by the census of 1900. If these three villages agreed to merge into one, under Pennsylvania law they could become a borough. That is exactly what they did in 1902. Together they became the Borough of Alliance, a fitting name, as the town was an alliance made up of a joining together of the three villages. This is why so many places and businesses have the name of Alliance attached to them. The name of the Borough would be changed in 1909 to Northampton. Schnecksville Source: www.schneckhistory.com
Schnecksville is located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The history of Schnecksville and the genealogy of several Schneck families can be found in the book Im Schneckengang. After significant research, Henry Schneck found Adam Schneck’s house in the heart of Schnecksville. A lot had been done to hide this house. Once the 20th century covers had been removed its age was obvious. Henry and the Upper Lehigh Historical Society worked to preserve the house and move it across Route 873. In August of 2005, a Memory Medallion with the following text was added to the house. The “original” Schneck House is an authentically restored, two-story log house located in the northern part of the village of Schnecksville, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. It is considered to be the oldest building in the Schnecksville area. Now located on the east side of Pennsylvania Route 873 (Main Street), the house was formerly situated just across that road (approximately on the grass-covered area at the western edge of the deceleration lane used
for entering the shopping mall today). When the shopping center was proposed in 1989, a persistent group of Schneck family members worked diligently to save their namesake house from destruction and for its restoration. (This group included, among many others, Roy & Ann (Schneck) Kern, owners of the house and land, and Curtis E. Schneck and Henry R. Schneck, Jr., the President and the Historian, respectively, of the Schneck Family Reunion). The result of their efforts was a monetary fund the shopping mall developer had to establish for the relocation and restoration of the Schneck House. On July 15, 1994 the house was jacked-up from its former fieldstone foundation, transported across the road, and temporarily supported so that a new concrete block foundation could be constructed. Then restoration work began under the auspices of the Upper Lehigh Historical Society, established by many history-minded community residents (including its first President, Timothy J. Wotring) for the initial purpose of overseeing the restoration and future maintenance of the house and grounds. The Upper Lehigh Historical Society is the current owner of the Schneck House. The Schneck House was originally constructed, and is still located, on a tract of land (called “Snake’s Hole”) containing 22 acres & 127 perches. This tract,

situated (until 1811) in Whitehall Township, Northampton County, was warranted on July 27, 1772, surveyed on October 10, 1772, and patented on November 3, 1773 to Adam Schneck (“Shneck” and“Sneck”), the immigrant ancestor and progenitor of the Schneck family in this area. Adam Schneck had previously acquired four adjacent tracts of land to the south, southeast, and east of “Snake’s Hole”. The surveys for these tracts were performed on: October 21, 1757; October 25, 1765; October 14, 1766; and January 12, 1768. Therefore, the Schneck House could not have been the first or “original house built be Adam Schneck when he first settled in this vicinity. In 1798, the United States Direct House Tax schedule for Whitehall Township includes “Peter Shneck” as the owner (and Christian Acker as the occupant) of “1 small one-story log Dwelling House” worth $105, on the list of houses worth more than $100. The list of houses worth less than $100 includes “Peter Shneck” as the owner (and Christian Acker as the occupant) of “1 log Barn” with no value listed, plus 27 acres of land worth $195. In this second list “Peter Shneck” is included separately as the owner and occupant of “2 old Houses” worth $75, “1 log Barn” with no value listed, plus 100 acres of land worth $530. Thus, Peter Schneck probably rented the Schneck House and the approximate “Snake’s
Hole” tract (27 acres vs. 22 A 127P) to Christian Acker. On December 28, 1807, within days of his death, Peter Schneck and his wife Magdalena conveyed the “Snake’s Hole” tract “…Together also with all and singular the buildings, …”to their son Johannes/ John for 50 pounds currency. When Johannes/John Schneck dictated his own Last Will & Testament on December 4, 1845, he declared that his farmland (located in North Whitehall Township, Lehigh County since March 6, 1812) should be divided into 3 parts. One part should be “…approximately 18 or 20 acres of land with the log house on the road…”, i.e., the Schneck House along PA Route 873). On February 3, 1846, this land (16 acres, 61 perches) and the log house were conveyed to Johannes/John’s son Samuel Schneck. On March 31, 1860 Samuel Schneck and his wife Fianna conveyed the land and log house to his brother Thomas Schneck. On April 1, 1869 Thomas Schneck and his wife Mary Ann conveyed them to William Kennel and his wife Mary, the first nonSchneck family to own the Schneck House. The chain of conveyances continued to William Gackenbach and his wife Lillie on April 7, 1907 and

to Roy J. Kern (a Schneck family descendant) and his wife Mildred M. on August 6, 1954. At unknown times during these conveyances, the one-story log house had been expanded to twostory (probably very early in the 1800’s) and the original exterior of the logs had been covered with clapboards to protect the logs from weathering and rot (possibly at the same time as the expansion). Much later (probably in the 1950’s) asbestos-cement siding had been installed over the clapboard. The original wooden roofing material had also been replaced with slate shingles. A two-story, lumberframed addition (containing a large kitchen on the first floor and a large bedroom on the second) had been added to the rear of the house, making the house plan L-shaped. And a one-story roofed concrete porch had also been added along the former north side of the log house and the rear addition. Both of these additions were removed just prior to relocating the original log house across the road. After relocation, the layers of asbestos-cement siding and clapboards were removed. The deteriorated “chinking” that filled the spaces between the logs was removed and replaced with
new cementitious material. Modern preservative coatings were applied to the exterior of the logs and the chinking to waterproof and prevent weathering and rot. The slate roof shingles were replaced with cedar-shakes over the original roof rafters. (Some of these roof rafters are still marked by Roman numerals designating their position in the roof framing). The interior “horsehair” plaster on the walls and the ceilings was removed, exposing the interior sides of the logs and the floor joists. Fieldstones from the original foundation, supplemented by new fieldstones, were used to face the aboveground concrete block foundation, build “stoops” at the front and rear entrances and to construct a Colonial Period replica kitchen fireplace on the rear wall. The existing, later period exterior doors and windows were replaced with older, more authentic Colonial Period types. Today, thanks to many history-minded individuals who donated their time and effort, the restored Schneck House exists as a tribute to all of our Pennsylvania German (Pennsilfaanische Deitsch) pioneer family ancestors, especially Adam Schneck. Our ancestors left their homes and relatives in the many principalities of the German-speaking areas of old Europe in the 1700’s to suffer hardships building new lives in the wilderness of a new land

Reliable Electrical Service
submitted by Carol Obando-Derstine, regional affairs director, PPL Electric Utilities
What does reliable electric service mean to you? If you own a business, it means that your computers, machinery, or cash registers can always be counted on to work when things are busiest. At home, it means your personal space can always be relied on to be well-lit and comfortable, and the electricity-driven items that make your life easier are always doing their jobs when you want them. Reliable electricity even makes a difference when you’re out on the road. It powers streetlights, traffic lights and crossing signals that make travel safe and orderly. Strong electric service touches just about everything you do, everywhere you go. That’s why we’re proud to say that PPL Electric Utilities’ reliability in 2017 was our strongest on record. In recent years we’ve been installing smart grid technology, using data analytics to improve equipment maintenance and replacement, replacing older poles and equipment with strong newer models, doing comprehensive clearing of vegetation along power lines, installing better protection against damage from lightning strikes, and more. The result? Our customers experienced 550,000 fewer interruptions in 2017 than they did 10 years before. In fact, PPL Electric Utilities customers now
experience some of the best electric reliability in the country: PPL ranks in the top 11 percent of utilities nationwide in terms of the lowest average number of outages per customer. You might have noticed this reliability during the extreme cold of January. Our system handled high demand and cold temperatures without missing a beat. That’s our goal any time extreme weather arrives, whether it’s winter cold or summer heat. Or, you might have noticed it on 1/12/2018, shortly after 6:15 a.m. That’s when one of the 4,600 devices that make up our smart grid system noticed an outage in the West Allentown area and automatically rerouted power around it. 107 of 331affected customers were back online within 179 seconds minutes. What’s next? Well, we continue to invest in improving our grid. There are always places where we can improve – places where the system can be strengthened or made more flexible. We continue to trim trees, rebuild power lines, replace old poles, and more. We’ll never be able to completely banish outages – especially after high winds, ice storms or other natural menaces. But we’re committed to continued improvement. Because we know that whether you’re at work, at home or on the road, you count on us to deliver.

Do waer’s mir doch marickwaddich schlecht, Mei Geig, waer’s net fer dich; Du lachscht mit mir, du heilscht mit mir, Fielscht allfatt grad wie ich! Gehersam, willich, schpielscht so garn – Weescht wohl zu wem dass’d gheerscht – Bischt immer nei, du liebscht yo mich Doch allfatt ’s Letscht un ’s Erscht.
Verbroche do, die Fareb do ab, Sie glitzert nimmi meh; Gekraeckt, vergratzt, viel uffgepaetcht, Sie schpielt yo doch so schee. Eens frogt, „Waar mol die Geig im Feier?“ Un annre schpott’n un lache, Un meene ev’n sie waer net Fer Feier mit aazumache!

My old fiddle The old fiddle lies there on the sideboard, With affection, I look at her; She is always ready – don’t you see? The bow is alongside. What causes me to be so joyful? My heart, what makes it so happy? Every time that I see her, That is always the case for me! Broken here and the color off there, She does not glitter anymore; Cracked, scratched, and patched up often, Yet she certainly plays so nicely. Someone asks, “Was it in a fire one time?” And others heckle and laugh, And suggest it would not even be Used to start a fire with it. I still take the old fiddle from the cupboard, Must play her – just one piece – I stop and hold her on my knee, And think of times past, The heartily, beautiful , bygone time, So full of joy and fun – No, not all fun, yet something else also – Now my eyes become watery. My beloved fiddle, you wooden woman! If you could just speak! Thus you would tell it in detail – What you know and feel and think! Of many a [persons] that you made happy, They are now at rest – That blessed rest – and after a short time, We will also come to it. I have no better friend than you, You do not cause my heart to ache; You are not quarrelsome, you are not cold, You also do not become angry – understand? You don’t remain spiteful, don’t cheat me Over inheritance or money –

I come to you, my refuge in A troublesome world. It would be remarkably difficult here for me, If it would not be for you, my fiddle; You laugh with me, you cry with me, You always feel exactly like me! Obedient, willing, you play so gladly – You know to whom you belong – You are always nigh, you love me indeed Yet the last one and always the first one. If it becomes rainy, cold and miserable again That no one cares to go out, Such suits me right, I take my fiddle And play the whole day! What more would I want? I am contend, My fiddle is my delight No long face, no heavy heart No loneliness for me. Without sheet music – I play from memory – With my foot stamping on the floor, A dance piece now, an old jig, Which makes the young people jump! I like to see that – let them go, Their time will also come soon enough; We were once right like them, Full of life, full of energy and carefree. Oh! If there would be no music in the world One could be sorrowful! One thinks the man who hates music would be dumb and poor along with it. I lived for sixty years, And know what I am talking about. The man who hardly likes any music – Be careful! Something is wrong! The nicest place, that is at home, At home, where there is music; This lifts us up, this is [certainly] the way To happiness . What if one would have much land or money
And yet no joy along with it? Here I would not give my old fiddle For a large farm. It is becoming dark, the fire, it is almost out – The hour – already seven-thirty So late? I must go to bed now – My fiddle, I say, “Good night!” I will lay you again on the sideboard Until I want you again; Sleep there, my darling, my dear fiddle, “Good night!” Everything is quiet. [Edgar M. Eshelman was born July 14, 1872 and spend his early years in the Sinking Spring area of Berks County. Before 1900 he married and moved to the Takoma Park area of Washington, D. C. There he worked as a bookbinder and in the first decade of the 20th century wrote several Dutch poems, which were published in the Pennsylvania-German Magazine. ( The poem featured here creates a bit of a mystery in that some details – sixty years old and apparently living alone – conflict with his biography.) By 1940 he had retired and still lived
