Do you believe in Spirits? Well I can tell you the sold-out group that participated in “Locked in the Library”has a whole new outlook on the spirit world. Fun and unusual information was shared with the entire group and I’m still trying to figure out why the paranormal equipment always worked around me! Our very sincere thanks to the Paranormal Afflictions Research Association, Randy and Jen and their team did an amazing job along with the Slatington Public Library, and our wonderful liquid spirits supplier, Eight Oaks Craft Distillery of New Tripoli. We have a long history with our March event; it is our 23rd annual Spirit Award. This year’s event has a new theme and a wonderful new location. “Meet us on Park Avenue”, will be held at the Woodstone County Club, Saturday, March 25 starting at 6 p.m. This event was created to honor individuals who have given unselfishly their time and talents in serving their local communities. This year I have the proud honor to announce that Kevin Schmidt, our past president and friend has been chosen. Some of Kevin’s activities include a member of the Upper Lions Club, President of Northern Valley Medical Services, the local Planning Commission and not to mention various work organizations that he is a member of. Kevin is the current President of The

Emerald Saint Peter, United Methodist Church Opens Lifetree Café March 18th at 5 p.m. Submitted By REV. WILLIAM J. RITZENTHALER

This “conversation café”—located at the Helping Hands Community Center in Parryville PA, 18244 on the corner of Main Street and Chestnut Street. —is part of a national network of locations that offer participatory events related to life and faith. The Lifetree Café experience is a scheduled hour of “stories and conversations to feed the soul,” according to Pastor Bill Ritzenthaler. The hour typically includes a short original film and guided conversation. A local host directs the hour.“It’s sort of like a live, local talk show—with an inspirational twist,” Pastor Bill said. The discussions will be led by Pamela Snyder a Certified Lay Minister, she will guide the discussion during the time we have together. Topics, which change weekly, focus on popular life issues. Topics may include such things as loneliness, immigration, health, angels, guilt, prayer, and life after death. The exclusive documentarystyle films feature everyday people with unusual stories, as well as nationally known figures. National Lifetree Café founder Thom Schultz said, “We engage people of all ages in a national

conversation through local Lifetree Cafés as well as a robust online presence.” The organization’s website, LifetreeCafe.com, invites visitors to participate online in the same topical conversations that occur each week at the live venues. “Lifetree serves as a comfortable place to meet other people who are interested in the same issues.” Schultz said, “The atmosphere resembles a warm, neighborhood coffee shop. The experience gives people practical help and insight on life issues, and provides a hopeful spiritual connection.” Shultz said,“We’ve found that people today want to participate in the conversation. It’s not enough to simply hear someone lecture on an important topic. People want to share their thoughts, ask questions, and tell their own stories. Lifetree offers a safe place and time to do that.” Lifetree Café will be offered at 5 p.m. every Saturday, starting on March 18th. Admission to the 60-minute events is free. Snacks and beverages are available. Helping Hands Community Center Parryville, PA

Replica Railroad Sign At Slatington Trailhead Now Lit Submitted By ROBERT STETTNER

The replica railroad sign adorning the pavilion at the Slatington Trailhead is now lit for passers by to see at night. The sign, purchased a few years ago by Northern Lehigh Future Focus (NLFF), is an exact replica of a sign, which was attached to the old Slatington Train Station. The sign indicates the mileage from Slatington to Buffalo, New York and to New York City, the route

of the famous Black Diamond Express passenger train. The train ran on the former Lehigh Valley Railroad (LVRR) line, which passed through Slatington. The Slatington Train Station was destroyed on February 1, 1969 when a LVRR Newark, NJ to Buffalo, NY bound freight train derailed and crashed into the station. When the pavilion at the trailhead was constructed on the site of the former station, NLFF felt the mileage sign, which was a prominent feature on the old station, should be replicated and hung on the pavilion. It made for a nice addition to the pavilion, while at the same time preserved Slatington’s history. NLFF would like to thank Doug Wanamaker, who installed the lights and ran the wiring, and the Venture Group for their cooperation in allowing this project to proceed.

Presenters will include John E. Wetzel, secretary, Pennsylvania Department of Corrections; State Senator Judith Schwank; Ann Schwartzman, Pennsylvania Prison Society; Liz Ryan, president & CEO, Youth First Initiative and Johanna Byrd, ACSW, executive director, National Association of Social Workers, Pa. Local Woman Inducted Into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Northampton Community College Offers free career Assistance

Brooke Fontoura-Sutliff of Northampton, Pennsylvania, was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Fontoura-Sutliff was initiated at Kutztown University. Fontoura-Sutliff is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction. Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of Marcus L. Urann who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society: one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines.

Yes, one doesn’t throw these away, He just takes them to Tailor Beck. He makes everything, and truly Better than it was from new. Beck is a master tailor, Because this is his life’s purpose. Everyone in the town, so it appears, Is Tailor Beck’s friends. But Johnny and George already ‘Sharpen the tongue’ to torment him. Not very far from Beck’s house Runs a roaring stream, A wild creek, and [also] deep and clear, Especially that time of the year. [If] one wants to cross that creek, He must go over a plank-bridge. Johnny and George get moving To saw at that little bridge, Ritzy ratzy(?), back and forth, Until it was almost cut through. Run to the other side; hustle! Hustle! Hustle! They are behind an elderberry bush, Where no one can see them, And then they yelled loudly: “Tailor, tailor, ‘Meck, meck, meck!’

Finally laid himself on the table, And yet made such a weak cry. Yet his good wife came soon With the clothes iron; She ironed his belly – And not just for some pastime! The iron was right hot and heavy, She pushed it back and forth a few times, And still pressed strongly on it one time, And the pain stopped. The people in the village already know it: The tailor is certainly healthy again.

In both Birmelin’s version of the third trick and in the original, Tailor Beck is well received in his village. But that was not usually the case; tailors were often taunted because their occupation was perceived as “women’s work”. And tailors were often referred to by the surname Bock, or Beck, and since the word “Bock”could also refer to a ram or billy goat, that double meaning came to be a basis for some heckling. Many songs of that era contained a chorus line: “Schneider, meck, meck, meck”, where “meck” represented the sound a billy goat makes (onomatopoeia). Hans’ and Yarick’s taunts mirrored the words of those songs. The positive attitude that

The third trick – and is that all there is? No, the fourth comes soon. [John Birmelin’s Hans un Yarick is a PA Dutch rendering of the classic German children’s story, Max und Moritz, written by Wilhelm Busch (18321908) and first published in 1865. Birmelin’s version has the subtitle, En Buwegschicht in siwwe Schtreech (A boyhood story in seven tricks). In each of the first five tricks those two boys create some hardship for their victims with no apparent repercussion, but in the last two, the table is turned on them and they pay dearly, therein the moral lesson. 10 Ways to Get Your Home Ready for Spring

Bust open the cedar closet and shove in everything you won’t need ‘til November, because the seasons have finally changed! It’s time to get your house hopping for spring and we have 10 ways to do it! Change Your Welcome Mat-Make a statement right through the gate (literally) with a new welcome mat for spring. Clean the Windows-Get rid of all the gunk and grime from a winter’s worth of weather on your windows. Add Flowers-Head to the local nursery and pick out some of your favorite blossoms. Buy bulbs to

plant in your garden outside, and buy freshly cut flowers for various bouquets in your home. We love peonies, white roses and hydrangea, however more budget-friendly (yet equally beautiful) options include tulips and daffodils. Brighten Up Prints-Change up your table cloths, throw pillows, hand towels and area rugs with brighter colors and snazzier prints that scream sunshine. Add Some Color to the Fridge-Take down the winter calendar and throw some bright new magnets, postcards and photographs on the fridge. If you have

kids, spend an afternoon creating new art with them! New Table Setting-Buy some colorful new dishware for spring. If your dishware is white, buy some salad plates or bowls to accent them, or try cloth napkins or a statement table runner. Flip Your Mattress/Change Bedding-Put away your heavy comforters and quilts and make way for lighter fabrics and softer colors for spring and summer. And we all hate doing it, but while you’re at it, flipping your mattress will increase its life span and help you sleep better. Clean!-They don’t call it “spring cleaning” for nothing. Light a Linen Candle-We LOVE the smell of linen for spring. It’s enough of a scent to fill your home,

but not so overwhelming that you feel like you got stuck in a Christmas tree, a Lysol bottle or the women’s perfume section at Bloomingdale’s. Lay Down Mulch-If you have a backyard, grab your rake and hoe and get to work! Prepare the dirt around your hedges for mulch or fertilizer and get your garden ready for a season of planting!

Spring is right around the corner Spring is right around the corner, and for most home owners it’s an exciting time to get your home ready. In the winter time, many portions of your home are neglected or aren’t used as often because of home owners staying inside their homes. From the interiors of your home to the exterior, getting your home ready for spring will ensure you’ll be ready to enjoy the warmer weather once it hits. Space out your maintenance tips and by time spring is here, you will be able to enjoy the season! Start on your exterior: The outside of your home has taken more wear and tear from the harsh winter, than the interior so start here. Walk around your home and examine caulking around windows and doors, as well as open windows and doors and look at weather stripping. Replace old or cracking caulk and replace weather stripping. Inspect the roof for broken or missing shingles, or tiles, and clean out gutters and downspouts at the same time. Landscaping tips: While it may not be time for you to start planting flowers and watering your lawn, it isn’t too early to ensure you will have ready your garden hoses, walkways, and adjacent areas to your landscaping. Replace cracked or old garden hoses, and rake away leaves, tree limbs and debris

from sidewalks, plant beds and surrounding areas. If you no longer have snow in your area, now is a good time to start planning out your spring landscaping ideas and lawn care maintenance regimen. Pressure wash concrete and paver areas that have become dirty and power wash vinyl siding, brick walls and vertical surfaces on your home if need be. Check your interior systems: The fall and spring are the two most important times to review your home’s major HVAC – heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems. Right before the harsh climatic changes are going to occur. Ensure air filters have been replaced or cleaned and stock up on new air filters if you use disposable one. Check your air conditioner before the summer to ensure it is in good working order. If you need to have a service person look at it now, it will be a lot less expensive than 3 months from now. Interior spring cleaning: By now your windows – inside and out could use a cleaning. You will be surprised how much you can see out your windows, once they are cleaned. Clean off ceiling fans, and clean out fireplaces from use over the winter. Test your emergency systems in your home: home alarm,

smoke fire alarm, fire extinguisher, and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they are working properly. Most home owners forget to test these regularly; fall and spring maintenance time is a perfect opportunity to ensure they’re in good working order. Preparing your home for the spring is rewarding now, and 3 months from now! Your home goes through changes as it ages, and climatic conditions change. Spring maintenance is a good idea for everyone, and even more important if you’re considering putting your home on the market soon. Home buyers want to ensure that all systems have been well attended and taken care of before buying a home. If you’re concerned you will miss something, hire a professional home inspector – they will cover the entire home from top to bottom. What are you waiting for? Get started, the warm weather is on its way!

Odyssey of the Mind students Compete with creativity submitted by MELINDA MCCANN

About 700 local students put their creativity to the test at the Northeast Pennsylvania Odyssey of the Mind regional tournament. Over 100 teams from 40 area K-12 schools went head-to-head on March 11. Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem-solving program. Teams of up to seven students receive a "long-term" problem at the beginning of the school year that they must solve in an eight-minute performance within a small budget. “It’s a fantastic program that pushes children to

It’s exciting to see what they come up with.” This year’s long-term problems range from creating a robot that learns from others, to imagining how time traveling could have inspired important works of art. Teams also receive a secret "spontaneous" problem the day of competition, which they must solve on the spot. The NEPA regional tournament was held at Pocono Mountain West High School in Pocono Summit for the ninth year in a row. “We wish all the teams competing the best of luck, and we’re indebted to the Pocono Mountain School District and the hundreds of volunteers who make our program possible,” Balton said. Clean Up: Throughout the fall and winter, your garden can be exposed to the elements and what’s left behind from storms. “You want to first start by clearing all of your garden beds and lawn of broken branches, leaves, and other debris that have collected,” says Chris Lambton, professional landscaper and host of DIY Network’sYard Crashers. “It’s important to start these chores quickly, as your

spring bulbs and plants should be popping out of the ground any day now. The sooner you clean out the beds, the less chance you have of stepping on the growing plants and damaging them.” The same cleanup method applies for your trees and bushes.“To prep for spring, trim off any broken or dead branches,” he says.“Now is also a good time to prune and shape the tree.” 2. Prep Your Garden Tools: Pull out those tools that have been sitting around all winter.“It’s almost time to use your tools again, so you want to make sure they are ready for the job,” says Lambton. “Clean off the tools with soap and water, and use mineral spirits on wood handles. The mineral spirits will help prevent the wood from splintering. I clean my tools every spring and fall, or if they are especially dirty.” 3. Give Your Soil Some TLC: Make sure your soil is ready for planting. “To start, turn the soil over with a pitchfork and rake it out, clearing any weeds that may have grown,” he says. “I then add fresh compost from my compost bin—if you don’t have one, use store-bought compost or manure to add nutrients to the soil.”You’ll want to add compost or manure a couple of weeks before planting something, so it has time to mix well with your soil Continued on page 45

and won’t burn the roots of your new plants. 4. Make a Plan: Consult your zone to see which flowers and vegetables are best for your location. You can also head to your local nursery to get planting recommendations from local experts. “Planning your garden is the most important part,” says Lambton. “I like to plant so that you get color blooming throughout the season—so mix perennial flowers with some annuals as this will help keep color in your yard longer. It’s also good to plant according to height, making sure that taller plants don’t block the sun from shorter ones.”

5. And Don't Forget to Maintain It: Upkeep during the whole season is key. “Once your flowers start blooming you will have to deadhead to promote more flowers (depending on the species), and it’s a good time to plant annuals to supplement your perennial flowers,” says Lambton. Deadheading is when you cut off the drooping or fading flowers from the rest of the green, healthy stem. “The late spring is also a good time to put down a nice layer of mulch on the garden,” he says. “This will help hold down weeds while keeping in water for those long hot summer days ahead. It also will break down over the fall and winter and help add nutrients to the soil.”
