Bethlehem Area Vocational School Students Helping Students Sarrah Ramos, a senior at Northampton Area High School and Bethlehem Area VocationalTechnical School is battling stage four cancer. While Sarrah was in school she was always happy and an upbeat student in the classroom. The students and staff at BAVTS wanted to fundraise to do something different for Sarrah. Since it was close to Valentine’s Day, they decided to hold a “Hearts for Sarrah” fundraiser selling hearts in the classroom and at lunch. The students wrote their names, special messages and prayers to Sarrah on the hearts which were delivered to her family for Valentine’s Day. They also did a “Cents for Sarrah” collecting change daily. The proceeds from a week long bake sale, “Hearts and Cents for Sarrah” as well as faculty donations were presented to her. The amount totaling over $3,400. The students wanted to do something special that Sarrah would remember. With the generosity of community support and a Continued on page 6

Meet the Neighbors Helping Neighbors — and learn how you can help

SOURCE: TODAY.COM

There are few things in the world more rewarding than turning the act of caring into doing. With that in mind, here are a few simple ways you can get involved. Call and ask how you can help Sometimes it's as easy as picking up the phone.

Senior centers and libraries are often looking for volunteers to help with ongoing programs or tasks. From reading to elementary students to leading a bingo class, there's lots of good work to be done. Clean up a local park Don't have anything going on one Saturday? Gather your neighbors, grab some tools and head to the park down the street. Even if the job is as simple as changing garbage bags and throwing away some loose trash, the people who frequent the park will appreciate your effort. Pass on the spirit of volunteering to the next generation Beyond involving your neighbors, bring your kids, or younger members of the community, whenever you volunteer. If you feel they're of the age to contribute — and take something from the moment — then this will be a good opportunity to teach them a valuable lesson about caring and giving back. It's an investment that will last a lifetime.

10 Steps to a Fantastic Neighborhood Block Party SOURCE: Denver Dweller By Heather Garbo, Blogger, Denver Mama, Community Builder and more!

This August will mark our third annual neighborhood block party. Before that initial gathering we didn’t see our neighbors all that much, in large part because many of us were new arrivals to the street. But, it’s amazing how that first block party served as a catalyst for so many more neighborhood gatherings over the last two years. In that time there have been casual barbecues, informal porch parties, Christmas Eve drinks, an Easter egg hunt, a Kentucky Derby party, guys’ nights out, girls’ nights out, kids playing in each other’s yards, and countless spontaneous sidewalk gatherings where beers-in-hand seemed to appear out of nowhere. The socializing is the fun part, but there are so many good reasons to get to know your neighbors better: to build sense of community, to create a safer neighborhood, to help each other out, to borrow and lend things, to keep an eye on one another’s kids, to give your kids easy access to daily playmates, and to build friendships that could last a lifetime. I’ve blogged more than once about how some of my oldest friends came into my life as my childhood neighbors, and I still feel incredibly grateful that they did. If you don’t have a neighborhood block party scheduled yet for this coming summer, there is still plenty of time to plan it. Building a foundation of strong neighborly relations is certainly worth the effort! Here’s a how-to guide in 10 easy steps. 1. Reach out to your neighbors to get everyone on board. This is easy if you already know your neighbors, but if you don’t know them yet, your first step might be to create a neighborhood or block directory. This can be as simple as dropping a signup sheet in everyone’s mailbox. If you decide to Celebrating 38 years! Proud to serve our community.

simply reach out by word-of-mouth, consider having a sign-up sheet at the block party to make future communications easier. It will be a whole lot easier to coordinate any future events via email. 2. Pick a date with everyone in mind. Remember that a neighborhood block party is about encouraging interaction and a sense of community. This means that the most successful events are not necessarily perfectly planned and perhaps do not look Pinterest worthy. But, the parties that build community by engaging neighbors, both during planning and on the actual day, are the most successful. For this reason it’s important to pick a date that a majority can attend. 3. Secure an event permit (if applicable). This is not needed if someone is hosting the party at their house or yard, of course. But it is necessary if you will be holding the party in the street and will need to barricade an area. 4. Remember the key ingredients for any successful party: food and drinks, music, and kids’ activities. A few questions to answer: Will this be

a potluck picnic or can you have food donated by a local business? Should you designate a grilling area where everyone can have their meat grilled or should each family be responsible for their own? Is this BYOB or will you have a beer keg? Can someone provide the music with their own personal sound system or will you arrange for live music? Will you rent a bounce house or other outdoor activity or can you organize yard games and toys from the neighbors? (Bubbles, sidewalk chalk, water toys and kiddie pools will keep most kids happy.) Finally you need to determine if you will collect money for any of these shared costs. 5. Don’t forget basic party supplies. At minimum, you will need tables, chairs, plates, cups, utensils, and napkins. You might need a tent, ice, a grill or two. Ask families to sign up to bring supplies. (See Step 6 for why it’s important to share tasks.) 6. Share the planning assignments. Once you determine what you will need (Steps 4 and 5), you need to assign responsibility. This shouldn’t all fall on one or two families, and not just because you don’t want to do all the work yourself. It’s important for all the neighbors to feel ownership of the event, and sharing the planning tasks is one way to do that. This is how you not only ensure attendance this year, but also that the party will continue to

live on year after year. 7. Send out an invitation with party details. Create a flyer or electronic invitation – try Evite or Paperless Post for ready-to-use templates to share the details with all of the neighbors. In addition to the time and date, be sure to include what neighbors should expect: Should they bring food to share? Are you asking everyone to contribute to costs? Be sure to include these details in your invitation. 8. Set the scene before everyone arrives. Block off the street, set up tables and chairs, and designate a food area, preferably out of the sun. 9. Spend a little time with each of your neighbors. Enjoy yourself, but try to break out of your comfort zone a bit. This is where the extroverts really need to reach out to the introverts. If you see someone you don’t know well who is sitting quietly, engage them in conversation. Because a neighborhood block party isn’t just like every other party — it’s also about building stronger neighbor relations. 10. Don’t forget to clean up. Remember this party is all about celebrating your neighborhood so don’t forget to leave your street better than you found it. This is also the perfect chance to plant the seeds in the minds of the little ones in attendance that it’s important to care for and take ownership of our neighborhood.

More than just a quick-fix, our team will make sure your car’s good for the long run.

EXCERPTED FROM: Life Satisfaction and Social Support in Different Communities SOURCE: PEW Research Center By: Kim Parker, Juliana Menasce Horowitz, Anna Brown, Richard Fry, D’Vera Cohn and Ruth Igielnik

Satisfaction with key aspects of life doesn’t seem to be strongly linked to the type of community someone lives in. Americans in urban, suburban and rural areas are about equally satisfied with their family life, social life, job and financial situation. There is also little variation among those living in different types of places in the share reporting they have social support, feel optimistic about their lives overall or feel lonely. And the idea that life in the city feels more hectic than life in the country is not borne out by the data. Urban Americans are no more likely than those living in rural and suburban areas to say they are too busy to enjoy their lives. Meanwhile, among those who say they do not have enough income to lead the kind of life they want, rural Americans tend to be the least certain that they will ever have enough to do so. Across community types, married adults are more satisfied with their lives Rural residents are slightly more likely than those in urban areas to say they are very satisfied with their family life (49% vs. 43%). Some 46% of suburban residents say the same. (This difference is driven at least in part by the fact that people in rural areas are much more likely than those in urban areas to be married.) When it comes to their social lives, those in urban (28%), suburban (28%) and rural (26%) areas are all about equally likely to report that they are very satisfied. Likewise, among those who are employed full or part time, similar shares say they are very satisfied with their current job or career (31% of urban, 27% of suburban and 30% of rural residents). And relatively small shares of adults in each group

(whether employed or not) say they are very satisfied with their personal financial situation (14%, 18% and 17%, respectively). While these measures of satisfaction don’t vary much by community type, some do vary by age in suburban and rural areas. Adults ages 50 and older are more satisfied than their younger counterparts when it comes to their job, social life and financial situation, and this is true across community types. There are substantial gaps by marital status as well – married adults are much more satisfied with each aspect of their lives compared with unmarried adults. For example, 57% of married adults are very satisfied with their family life, compared with 36% of those who are unmarried. And while 32% of married adults are very satisfied with their social life, only 23% of unmarried adults are equally satisfied. This pattern holds up, for the most part, across community types. Similar shares across community types say they feel optimistic, busy When it comes to some of the more personal aspects of life – feeling supported by others or feeling lonely and isolated – Americans’ experiences do not seem to differ widely by what type of community they live in. Suburban residents are somewhat more likely than their urban counterparts to feel they have people to turn to for support all or most of the time (58% vs. 50%), while 54% of rural residents say the same. Relatively few adults (about one-in-ten) across community types say they feel lonely or isolated all or most of the time. Rural (50%) and suburban residents (49%) are somewhat more likely than those in urban areas (42%) to say they hardly ever or never feel lonely or isolated from those around them. Only 12% of Americans say they feel too busy to enjoy life all or most of the time. This sentiment is no more common in urban areas than it is in suburban or rural communities. Similarly, there are no notable differences across community types in feelings of general optimism about life. Roughly equal shares of adults in urban (42%), suburban (45%) and rural (42%) communities say they feel optimistic about their lives all or most of the time. Older adults tend to fare better on these measures overall. For example, 70% of adults ages 65 and older living in rural areas say they usually have people to turn to for support, compared with 54% Continued on page 18 News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || MARCH 5, 2020

of those ages 50 to 64 and about half of those younger than 50. The pattern is similar among suburban residents. But in urban areas, while those ages 65 and older are more likely than adults ages 50 to 64 to say they usually have people for support (57% vs. 43%), they are not significantly more likely than younger adults to say this (51% of those ages 30 to 49 and 52% of those 18 to 29). Similarly, older people are more likely than their younger counterparts to say they feel optimistic about their lives in suburban and rural areas but not in urban areas. And adults ages 65 and older are the least likely to say they are too busy to enjoy life, regardless of the type of community they live in. On most items, these feelings appear to be connected to education and other indicators of socio-economic status. Those who have graduated

with a four-year college degree are more likely than those who have some college experience or less to say they have people to turn to for support and are optimistic about their life all or most of the time, regardless of the type of community they live in. They are also less likely to say they feel lonely or isolated from those around them. For example, roughly half of college graduates in urban (53%), suburban (53%) and rural (55%) areas say they usually feel optimistic about their life. But about four-in-ten of those with some college experience or less education say this across communities (36% of people living in urban areas, 39% in suburbs and 39% in rural areas). However, college graduates and non-graduates alike are just as likely to say they are usually too busy to enjoy life in all types of communities. Married Americans are significantly more likely than their unmarried counterparts to say they usually have people to turn to and are optimistic about their life. For example, 57% of married urban residents say they have people to turn to for support all or most of the time, compared with 47% of unmarried urban residents. The shares are similar in suburban (62% vs. 53%) and rural (59% vs. 51%) areas. Across community types, there are no significant differences by marital status on whether someone feels they are usually too busy to enjoy life. However, parents of children younger than 18 are more likely than those who do not have children under 18 to say this. About two-in-ten parents say they are too busy, whether they live in urban (19%), suburban (18%) or rural (17%) areas; this compares with about one-in-ten of those who are not parents in urban (10%), suburban (11%) and rural (10%) areas.

Northern Lehigh Halloween Parade award Each year, the Northern Lehigh Halloween Parade awards the Judges' Award to the entry selected by the combined judges. Starting in 2019, the Judges' Award will be presented in honor of Forrest 'Bub' Hallman and Russ Hallman. For decades, Hallman's Service Station on Main Street, Slatington, has served as 'Parade Central' with Blue Ridge Cable using it as their broadcast location. Russ Hallman assumed the role as chair of the Northern Lehigh Events Committee in 2015 and worked tirelessly to help restore the parade to an anticipated community event. After his passing in 2019, Russ's niece, Tiffany Rehrig-Schaeffer, and his son, RJ Hallman, assumed the roles of co-chairs of the Committee. Pictured is the winner of the 2019 Judges' Award, Kory Rabenold and presenting the award is RJ Hallman. The 113th Northern Lehigh Halloween Parade will be held this year on Saturday, October 31 with a theme fitting the event's day...Halloween! Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund Charges Past Milestone On October 10, 2019 at Hideaway Hills Golf Club, 64 golfers and volunteers recognized the 2,089,996 miles of transportation provided by the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund to local families often traveling in unfamiliar surroundings seeking solutions for their children’s critical needs. The “Miles that Matter” initiative is one of the three missions of the Fund. It represents Krysta’s caring nature. Her willingness to give is represented

in the Fund’s focus on the benefits of Organ Donation. Her life mission of learning and personal d eve l o p m e n t is represented in the Fund’s Leadership Scholarships. A portion of the more than $200,000 raised over the past nine years comes from the Fund’s golf events and the remainder comes from a very caring community. In partnership with GIANT’s Cash for Causes Program, the “Miles that Matter” mission provides GIANT gift cards to families in support of their often urgent travel needs. The two-million-mile mark was supercharged during the Holiday Season through the Morning Call “Be an Angel” program where KHMF received more than $10,000 in donations to propel it towards its 2020 goal of reaching 2.5 million miles in support of local families in need. 31 Ways to Build Community Continued from page 20

3. Create a block directory. If you don’t yet know your neighbors, this is the perfect way to get started. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Just drop off a sign-up sheet in everyone’s mailbox and, once they return it to you, you can email the final version to everyone. 4. Be respectful of your neighbors. Don’t be that guy. Clean up after your dog and keep him leashed when out walking. Be aware of any disturbing noise levels that you are creating. Maintain your property and respect property boundaries. 5. Organize a block party. I didn’t learn most of my neighbors’ names until we had our first block party. After that one party, it seemed there was a lot more interaction on our block. This one does involve a little work, but if you share the coordinating duties with other neighbors and keep it simple (at least that first year), this is an easy way to get to know your neighbors. 6. Build a Little Free Library. As a book lover and a community builder, I’ve always loved the idea of the Little Free Library. And, we’re lucky to have two within a couple of blocks of our house (one a

residence, one a business). Each Little Free Library is registered online, so you can even see if there already is one near you. 7. Build a community garden. This is a time-tested way to promote community interaction in your neighborhood as well as share in a bounty of fresh veggies. Check out the American Community Gardening Association’s steps for getting started. 8. Host a backyard movie night. Treat the neighborhood to your favorite movie. But keep it PG rated–it will be outdoors, after all. 9. Create a formalized tool-sharing program. Sure, you can just ask Joe next door if you can borrow his drill, but consider establishing a more formal tool-sharing program to get everyone involved. I love this idea because tools are one of those things that you generally only use once in a while, so why not share them when they’re not in use? “Local Tools” is an online lending library management system that can get you started. 10. Welcome new families. You can bring a traditional baked good, but I also love the idea of welcoming newcomers by sharing your favorite local restaurants and businesses, perhaps a stack of your favorite take-out menus wrapped up in a ribbon. 11. Establish a neighborhood watch program.

These programs can be one of the most effective deterrents to neighborhood crime. Check out the National Crime Prevention Council’s guide to getting started. 12. Celebrate Neighbor Day. Since 2010 Good Magazine has sponsored Neighbor Day providing tools and suggestions to encourage good neighboring. Here’s the background: On September 28, National Good Neighbor Day is celebrated. Mrs. Becky Mattson from Lakeside, Montana came up with the idea of a national holiday recognizing the importance of good neighbors in 1971. In 1978, U.S. President Jimmy Carter announced the creation of a national day aimed at raising public awareness that good neighbors help achieve human understanding and build strong, thriving communities. 13. Host a regular monthly gathering, same time, no RSVP needed. Years ago I read in Sunset Magazine about a woman who hosted a monthly soup social at her house. The idea was simple: she provided the soup, neighbors would bring a baguette or drink to share, and their own bowl. And, this was key…it was the same time every month and no RSVP was necessary. A regular gathering that requires no commitment and little forethought makes for an easygoing gathering.

14. Start a neighborhood book club. In my last neighborhood, we had a block book club. When you only have to walk two houses over, it is a lot easier to be able to participate. Or if that feels like too much commitment (and when your kids are young, reading an entire book each month can feel like an unattainable goal), consider something slightly different…I love this idea for an “articles club.” 15. Use the inspiring Playborhood concepts to make your yard a neighborhood hang-out for kids. Do you know the book, Playborhood: Turn Your Neighborhood into a Place for Play? It reminds me of my childhood when the entire neighborhood seemed to be our playground. 16. Shovel your neighbor’s sidewalk when it snows, especially if it is difficult for them. If you neighbors are older or perhaps just going through a hard time with a new baby or sickness, spend a few extra minutes to clear their sidewalk too. This is no small gesture. In Denver, homeowners can actually be ticketed if their sidewalks aren’t clear 24 hours after it snows, even if they are out of town. Plus, you never know who will return the favor. 17. Support your neighborhood schools. There Continued on page 44

is a reason the most successful schools are the ones where parents are actively engaged. Good schools have successful, if informal, partnerships between the administration, the parents and the communityat-large. Even if you don’t have kids at the school, it’s important to remember that the local school is also a member of the community, and can greatly impact the neighborhood, positively or negatively. Our neighborhood businesses frequently host fundraisers to benefit the local schools. If you can attend an event, you’re helping the school as well as getting to know your neighbors at a fun community event. 18. Address concerns or issues directly with your neighbor. Don’t let a problem fester and escalate. And, don’t immediately call to report a problem to the city without first trying to work it out with your neighbor directly. 19. Host a porch party. I love hanging out on my front porch, and a porch party feels like an easy way to socialize with your neighbors without the work of a “real” party. 20. Shop locally if you live near a business district. You will not only see and interact with your

neighbors at the local businesses and along the way, but you will also get to know your other neighbors—the local business owners and employees. 21. Support our youngest entrepreneurs by buying the neighbor kids’ lemonade. I once read somewhere you should always buy whatever kids are selling on card tables in their front yards. You’re helping to encourage the initiative and resourcefulness of the young. Plus, just think back to when you were a kid and you were so excited to have a lemonade stand…you made all of the lemonade and spent an hour working on your sign, and then you sat and waited and waited. And when that first customer finally showed up, it didn’t matter that you only made 50 cents…you were so excited. Be that person for the neighborhood kids. 22. Treat your neighbors to a front-yard concert. Music has always been something that brings people together. Still this one’s a little tricky and depends on the neighborhood. Many would welcome a guitarist strumming on his front steps but perhaps not a full band. You have to know your neighborhood and, of course, be aware and respectful of noise levels. 23. Share your skills. Are you tech savvy? Perhaps you can sew or like to tinker with cars.Your neighbors would love for you to share these skills with them, either by teaching them or just helping on a onetime basis. Skill-sharing banks are popping up in neighborhoods across the country. It’s a great way for neighbors to share their valuable skills. 24. Talk to other parents at the park. The neighborhood park is where I get the best scoop! If you have kids, the neighborhood playground can offer a wealth of info…which schools parents like and why, where the best activities for kids are, which new restaurants are coming to the neighborhood. Exchanging neighborhood info at the park is a time-honored tradition among parents, but so often today everyone is on their smart phone. And I admit, I’ve been that mom. But I’ve also learned to make play dates and gather neighborhood intel.

25. Coordinate a neighborhood yard sale. Garage sale, tag sale, yard sale…whatever name you go by, this is a good way to clear out your home’s clutter and help your neighbor do the same. 26. Start a networking group. Like the old nursery song goes, you just never know “who are the people in your neighborhood, the people who you meet each day.” One of them just might be the perfect person for you to connect with professionally. Who knows? Your next position or client could be as close as the guy who lives four houses down. Meet up at a neighborhood coffee shop and publicize it on their community board to cast a wider net in the neighborhood. 27. Let your neighbors know when you will be out of town and ask them to contact you or the police if anything is suspicious. You don’t need a formalized neighborhood watch program to keep the neighborhood safe. If you ask your neighbors, they will likely ask you in turn, which helps to keep the neighborhood safe for everyone. 28. Welcome new little ones to the neighborhood. When I was growing up, every time one of the families had a new baby, the neighbors would decorate the families’ front ch with pink or blue ribbons. It was a small gesture, but a way of simultaneously announcing to everyone the baby’s birth and welcoming the baby into our community.

29. Share small neighborhood gifts at holiday times. It’s rare that anyone gets anything fun in the mail these days. Why not surprise your neighbor with a holiday treat? Keep it simple…baked goods, seasoned popcorn, or even a bottle of wine will be welcomed by most. 30. Drive like your kids live here…because they do! I have become one of those people who yells, “slow down!” whenever a car speeds down our street, which means I’ve become my parents. But, I get it now that I have kids. We all like to live in vibrant, bustling neighborhoods, but this means people, especially kids, need to feel safe when walking or biking around. 31. Connect online to connect offline. Websites like “Next Door” have created whole new online neighborhoods, but it’s important to remember to not use these sites in place of actually getting to know our neighbors in real life. So, go ahead and create that neighborhood Facebook group page. But, be sure to use it to encourage offline interaction, too.

Lehigh Valley school districts awarded over $870K in school safety grants submitted by Roseann Cadau

State Reps. Bob Freeman, D-Northampton, Jeanne McNeill, D-Lehigh, and Steve Samuelson, D-Northampton, announced that eight school districts in Northampton and Lehigh county school districts have received a total of $870,679 in school safety and security grants. The following school districts were awarded funding: Bethlehem Area School District -- $390,000 Catasauqua Area School District -- $35,000 Easton Area School District -- $45,000 Northern Lehigh School District -- $330,679 Salisbury Township School District -$35,000 Saucon Valley School District -- $40,000 Wilson Area School District -- $40,000 Whitehall-Coplay School District -- $45,000 “This funding will go far with enhancing antiviolence efforts in schools,” Freeman said. and behavioral services and for other security system programs. “We can’t take anything for granted anymore in schools as far as safety is concerned so our teachers and students must be prepared,” McNeill said. Samuelson said the demand for school safety funding is a priority. “A safe learning environment ensures the overall development of a child,” Samuelson said. The funds will be provided through the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency’s School Safety and Security Committee. This committee is the result of Act 44 of 2018, and is responsible for establishing the standards schools must meet when performing school safety and security assessments. The funds can be used for a variety of programs that address school safety, including risk assessment and violence-prevention efforts, classroom management, conflict resolution or dispute management initiatives, and the installation or purchase of technology related to school and student safety.

Touch of Dutch Continued from page 51

My dear son, I am writing slowly because I know that you cannot read fast. We no longer live where we lived when you left. Your dad read in the newspaper that most accidents happen within 20 miles of home. So we moved. I can't give you our new address because the people that lived here before we moved in took the house numbers with them so that they would not have to change their address. This place has a nice wash machine. The first time I used it I put four shirts in it, pulled the lever, and haven’t seen the shirts since. It rained two times this week, three days the first time and four days the second time. About the coat that you wanted me to send you: Your Aunt Sue said it would be too heavy to send in the mail. So I cut off the heaviest buttons and put them into one of the pockets. We just received the bill from the funeral director, he said that if we did not make the final payment on Gram mom’s funeral she would quite quickly rise up from the grave. Your dad has a new job. He has 500 people under him, since he is in charge of cutting the grass on the church cemetery. And your sister, she had a baby this morning. I

have not yet learned whether it is a boy or a girl. So I don't know whether you are an uncle or aunt. I'll let you know later. Three of your friends drove off of a bridge in their pickup truck. One of them was the driver and two were in the back of the truck. The one that was driving came out of it all right. He rolled down the window and swam to land. But the other two drowned. They couldn't open the tailgate. Your uncle John slipped and fell into the whiskey barrel a few weeks ago, and four fellows tried to pull him out. But he fought so hard against their rescue efforts that he drowned. We had him cremated, and he burned for three days. There's not much more news at this time. There is not much going on. Write again. Love, Mom P.S. I wanted to send you money, but I already sealed the envelope. [Before Paul gave this out to the group, he read it to us in Dutch and then a friend of his followed with an English translation. There is something about that technique that makes it even more funny; try it sometime with a group of Dutch friends.]
