Three members of the 2018 inaugural group of honorees, Paulette Fritz, Reverend Clark Kuntz, and Ed Pany, also joined in the festivities. The Northampton Middle School’s choral groups, the “Naturals” and the “Show Choir”, and the High School’s “Strolling Strings” entertained the honorees and guests during the evening, and a display of NAHS student artwork and a student produced slideshow of Foundation supported activities provided a backdrop to the festivities. The Lehigh Township Historical Society held its 2nd Annual Trout Fishing Derby on April 27th. Turnout was not as good as hoped, probably due to the weather.. chilly and windy following rain the day before. Those who attended the event that was sponsored by Barry Haydt; Silfies Fuel LLC and David L. Hess Concrete Contracting LLC. had a good time and some great trout were caught that resulted in nice prizes for the fishermen. Whether you are planning to travel, grill, host a picnic, have fun in the sun or spend time outdoors, remember these safety tips for a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend! many things other than driving on their mind. • Prepare your car for road trips by checking the tire pressure, filling up your gas tank and making sure emergency essentials are packed. • Plan your drive ahead of time to choose direct routes on safe roads and keep an eye on weather conditions. • If taking a long trip, make sure the driver has Continued on page 14

plenty of sleep the night before the trip each way. Frequent stops may help battle any fatigue, but a good night’s sleep keeps everyone in the car safe. • Always wear those seatbelts and make sure car seats are properly installed! Grilling safety: Grills and smokers have great potential for danger. • Never leave a lit or hot grill unattended. • Keep the grill at least two feet away from objects that can catch fire such as siding of the house or deck walls, low hanging branches and any outdoor

equipment such as pool toys. • Designate a “grillmaster” to control flames and to keep children and pets away. • Keep an extinguisher nearby and be prepared to cut off fuel lines if using propane. Read the instructions in advance since there will not be time to do so in the event of an emergency. Picnic Safety: • Proper food safety can help avoid tummy troubles that may dampen your fun. • Make sure to keep food at safe temperatures. should be kept heated until served. • Cover outdoor buffet dishes to prevent insects from adding germs as an ingredient to your delicious recipe. Water Safety: • Designate a “pool-watcher” when children are swimming. When many gather together adults may think someone else is watching, but having one person that’s in charge can increase safety. • Know in advance which children are able to swim and those that cannot. All children need to be supervised; however, as no child or adult is “drown-proof.” • If boating, always have kids wear life-jackets and have one available for each adult. Life-jackets also need to be appropriately fitted. Sun safety: • For young children, schedule activities in early morning hours or evening hours when possible, as temperatures will be lower in these hours. • Always use sunscreen and reapply frequently, especially if swimming or sweating. Use sunscreen with minimum of SPF 15 with both UVA and UVB protection. • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. • Protect your eyes too! Wear a hat and sunglasses. Outdoors: Be prepared for bug bites and more! • Keep a first aid kit ready and well stocked so

you’re prepared for insect bites (As well as cuts and bruises from that outside summer fun kids love to have)! • Be prepared for insects that can pose hazards. If anyone is allergic to bees or other pests, it is vital to have medicine available. Checking for ticks may be relevant as well. • Keep a list of emergency numbers in the kit that includes phone numbers for: doctors, dentists, poison control, and emergency contacts. Now, let’s enjoy the time off and fun in the sun. You deserve it! Share these Memorial Day safety tips with friends and family, and have a safe and happy holiday!

Memorial Day History Source: www.usmemorialday.org

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. Over two dozen cities and towns claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it’s difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. Regardless of the exact date or location of its origins, one thing is clear – Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11.“The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

Lehigh Valley Spinal Care Center

On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now observed in almost every state on the last Monday in May with Congressional passage of the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 – 363). This helped ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays, though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19th in Texas; April 26th in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10th in South Carolina; and June 3rd (Jefferson Davis’ birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee. We cherish too, the Poppy red That grows on fields where valor led, It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies. She then conceived of an idea to wear red poppies on Memorial day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war. She was the first to wear one, and sold poppies to her friends and co-workers with the money going to benefit servicemen in need. Later a Madam Guerin from France was visiting the United States and learned of this new custom started by Ms. Michael. When she returned to

France she made artificial red poppies to raise money for war orphaned children and widowed women. This tradition spread to other countries. In 1921, the Franco-American Children’s League sold poppies nationally to benefit war orphans of France and Belgium. The League disbanded a year later and Madam Guerin approached the VFW for help. Shortly before Memorial Day in 1922 the VFW became the first veterans’ organization to nationally sell poppies. Two years later their “Buddy” Poppy program was selling artificial poppies made by disabled veterans. In 1948 the US Post Office honored Ms. Michael for her role in founding the National Poppy movement by issuing a red 3 cent postage stamp with her likeness on it. National Moment of Remembrance The “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps.”

It appears that there was an organ In a church out in the country; There was still no electricity around there – It was pumped by hand [with bellows]. The organist was paid, Perhaps not as much as he should have, And out of his wages he must take care that He also had a [bellows] pumper. So he hired a fellow From the neighborhood that Was not very intelligent, yet was Strong in his arms and back. His pay, that should be one dollar For every Sunday service; It was a lot for him, yet barely enough As you find such payments today. Now that was good for a long time, Then it occurred to that fellow one time, His pay was entirely too small –

The bellows pumper kept at it. Yet he stopped once while pumping And held two fingers up; The organist quickly shook his head ‘no’ And played more enthusiastically. The fingers came up again, The organist shook ‘away with them!’ On that the pumper stopped just like that And sat back in his corner. The ‘principal pipes’ bellow like a bull, The ‘flute pipes’ scream like a baby pig, The ‘thirty-two’ pedalboard’s bass – That did not go well, of course. The organ, it was completely out of wind, The organist, out of patience; Yet the pumper sat in his corner, Joyful and innocent like. The organist waved his hand quickly – [The pumper] should get to work; The pumper held up two fingers – Just that – and he did nothing else. The people were looking at each other, What was now going on That the organ should stop Right in the middle of their singing?

They could not have known That the pumper is being stubborn; They could only see the organist squirm Like he was stung by a bumblebee. It was a trying time for the organist, Pained like having a tooth pulled; He was beaten – and he knew it – And shook his head affirmatively. As it might happen, there was the next song: "Now thank we all our God"; The pumper put himself into his work like He also wanted to thank someone. Whether today’s “sit-downs” possibly c o m e Here from that organ-pumper, That I do not know, yet it seems to me, It could, of course, be useful. [If you would like to see an original David Tannenberg hand-pumped organ, the Moravian Historical Society has one in their museum at the Whitfield House in Nazareth. I believe they also play it on special occasions. You can get more information on their website.]

LCCC Donley Center Street Art Finalists Announced submitted by Linda Baker

The five finalists for Lehigh Carbon Community College’s street art project at the Donley Center in downtown Allentown have been named. The five artists will create a mural along the blank wall of the alley side of the Donley Center, “Wall on Hall,” that expresses diversity. The mural installation expresses the individual visions of the five artists that will be painted on panels measuring 15 feet wide by 8 feet tall on Hall Street. Each artists’ design represents the themes of diversity, equity and inclusion. The transformation of a blank wall into a piece of art will reflect the ongoing transformation of the City of Allentown. This public art project has received funding support from the PA Council on the Arts and Lehigh Valley Arts Council. Artists and their works are: Pedro J. LeDee, Jr., of Allentown, has created vibrant murals throughout the Lehigh Valley, inspiring his community through art.“City Life” The City Life mural is a vibrant and engaging piece that will promote diversity and acceptance, within our melting-pot of a community. By using surrealistic imagery, the City Life mural will tell the story of growing up and graduating in the city without limits. Albert Negron III, of Bethlehem, creates compositions featuring bright colors and urban designs, as religion harbors his creativity and passion to create."Hands on Love” This piece was created to show unification. That different people from different backgrounds can come together to edify one purpose: LOVE. Alex Ortiz, born and raised in Allentown, draws inspiration from the city that surrounds him and his involvement in the LGBTQ community. “Allentown PRIDE” This painting showcases the connection between

Camille Stanley, of New Tripol and Lo-Fi Streets the city of Allentown and the LGBTQ community with a message of acceptance, equality, unity and diversity. Corey Reifinger, now of Philadelphia, but grew up in the Lehigh Valley, has worked as a designer for over 10 years and pulls from those experiences to create clean, innovative images.“Neighbors” Inspired by the harmless and intimate voyeurism of an urban community. In cities like Allentown, it is where a diverse base of people from various backgrounds live closely to one another, sometimes unknowingly weaving the personality of the community. Regardless of cultural, political or social identity, everyone shares a similar concept of what home is, and what makes it special to them. Camille Stanley, of New Tripoli, has created art since childhood and looks to her social environments for inspiration and drive. “Lo-Fi Streets” Aging buildings, street art and graffiti are what make the city of Allentown so beautiful. All of these forms of art are included in this piece and they all make up the foundation of what Allentown is about. Artists will begin installation this month and they will be completed by late June, with an unveiling and artist reception scheduled in July.
