2017 Atlas Cement Museum Opening The Atlas Cement Museum will open on May 14. Starting that Sunday, museum hours will be 1 to 3 p.m. the second and fourth Sunday of each month, through September. The museum is the only cement museum in the United States. This year, Essroc, the successor of the Coplay Cement Manufacturing Company will be honored. Essroc is now a chapter in cement history as the company was sold to Lehigh Hanson early in 2017. The Nazareth plant will continue production under the Lehigh Hanson name. A highlight added to the museum is a series of photographs and literature showing how Coplay

Cement was used by Mr. Fred C Trump (father of our president) in his numerous New York Apartment complexes. Another exhibit recognizes 200 former and current employees of our four active cement companies. During the month of May, the museum will host all fifth-grade students in the Northampton Area School District. Students from Seigfried, Lehigh, Bath and Moore Township elementary schools will tour the museum as part of their local history lesson. The museum’s goal is to teach students contributions cement companies made to our local communities. Educational tours are led by curator Edward Pany, museum board members Larry Oberly & Sally Madden and Borough Manager Leroy Bobst. Over the years thousands of students, community visitors and guests from many foreign countries visited the museum. A delegation traveled from the People’s Republic of China and made a point to visit the museum when they visited the United States a few years ago. A visit to the Atlas Cement Museum will help one appreciate the history and heritage of our Lehigh Valley Cement Industry.

COOKING WITH CATHERINE
Creamy Lemon Chicken Piccata
Recipe from therecipecritic.com
INGREDIENTS • 4 whole, boneless, skinless chicken breasts • Salt and pepper to taste • ¼ C. all purpose flour • 2 Tbsp. butter • 2 Tbsp. olive oil • 1 C. chicken broth • 2 whole lemons • ¾ C. heavy cream • ¼ C. capers • Copped parsley, for garnish • 1-pound angel hair pasta DIRECTIONS 1. Heat two tablespoons butter and two tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Salt and pepper each side of the chicken breasts and dredge in flour. Cook chicken breasts for about three
minutes on each side until cooked through. Remove chicken from skillet and set aside. 2. Turn the heat to medium low. Add broth, lemon juice, heavy cream and capers. Bring the sauce to a boil and then return to medium low heat. Test sauce, season with salt and pepper as needed. Allow sauce to cook and bubble for about three minutes. 3. Serve chicken over cooked pasta and spoon sauce over both. Sprinkle with fresh chopped parsley. I discovered this recipe on Pinterest and am so thankful that I came across it. It was so quick and easy, perfect for a weeknight dinner when you’re in a hurry. I skipped the capers when making this and it was still delicious. The creamy lemon sauce really made the dish; despite the heavy cream, it tasted very light and delicate paired with the angel hair pasta. I can’t wait to make this dinner again and my family can’t wait to eat it again!

When we were in the market for a home loan, we knew we wanted to find a bank that understood our needs as members of the local community. That’s why we chose The Neffs National Bank. Not only do they work here, they live here too. And since opening their doors on 1923, it’s been their tradition to help neighbors like us with all of our housing needs. Lehigh Township Historical Society News submitted by RUTH HALL KENT
Keep the wonderful old items coming! In the last two weeks we've had several people bring in items to be added to our collections in the museum. We recently received a very old piece of Indian pottery as well as a number of other items. Please stop by any Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. to noon or bring items to any Open House on the first Sunday of each month through October from 1 to 4 p.m. Tour the Historical Centre Museum to see the kind of articles we will accept (which is just about anything old).

Uff Land, uff Meer, Schadt, iwwer all. The old schoolhouse bell [This is the last part of Frank Brunner’s poem. If you want to read the first part, look in the last issue of “Town and Country.”] Now the bell rings to go to school, There it first becomes rightly serious; A chapel service was the rule, With which the day began. There we sang and prayed, And flirted a little with the girls. At midday the bell rang two times, For lunch and for school; And evening she rang just as well, Everyone got off the chair. We go into the chapel; Everyone must be at the worship service. Then the bell rings us home again, There is no end to learning; The lesson were exactly the same, I often did not know them. Yet I continued on, so like with the flow, I was then limp, tired and lame. At seven in the evening, when the bell rings, Now go in your room, Study until ten, when it rings, Then slip straight in bed, And sleep until the bell wakes you up. That’s the way they stretched one’s strings.
And so it goes from day to day, the bell always rings on; This learning costs money, effort and trouble; It goes miserably hard. And if one does not learn, she still rings on, Studying is a tedious yoke. I cannot now hear a bell one time that my heart does not go there To that school and I sit there, And say with greatest joy – Yes, that school, she was my good fortune; With happy spirit I think back. Like quails out of their nest, so we are again gone away. Each one did his best, And few remain back there, One does not always stay at one place, One seek for himself a sweetheart elsewhere. When a bell rings now, much comes forth, That one would not otherwise thing about; The bell remains from year to year; It’s good that she hangs there. At every church and every school, There must usually be a bell, it is the rule. There is something in the bell’s tone that stirs the heart; She leads us all toward God’s throne she stirs us up to heaven’s height. She clangs so sweet, so full of hope, Therefore, let her ring for all of us.

She rings in the living and the dead, At the beginning and at the end; She wakes us up to every necessity, There is nothing that she cannot do. She rings, yes, over the mountain and valley; On land, on sea, city, over all.

[Frank R. Brunner’s description of the local simple “no frills” church and his attendance at Union Seminary in New Berlin, Union County suggests that his family probably was members of an Evangelical Association church. Rural Evangelical Association church buildings were often small clapboard sided framed buildings with a simple adorned interior. The Evangelical Association opened Union Seminary in 1856 and it continued to 1887. (It then became Central Pennsylvania College, which continued until 1902.) It offered girls a high school diploma on the completion of the program and provided a college preparation course for boys who were expected to continue their education. In 1857 a Normal School was added for teacher preparation. The Evangelical Association was founded in the early 19th century by the Rev. Jacob Albright (1759– 1808), a PA German who was converted to Methodism, and that group was sometimes called the third German church, the first two being the Lutheran and Reformed Churches. The movement had spread rapidly from the Lancaster and Lebanon County area and by the late 1800s they had a presence in many other PA counties, in adjacent states and even in Midwest states. Following a dispute with a presiding bishop, some of the churches withdrew and in 1894 formed the United Evangelical Church. In the early 1920s the two groups reunited in Detroit

and renamed themselves "The Evangelical Church." (Those congregations who chose not to reunite formed a body called the Evangelical Congregational Church [ECC].) In 1946, the Evangelical Church merged with the United Brethren in Christ at a meeting in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church [EUB]. This body, in turn, united with the American Methodist Church in 1968 to form the United Methodist Church, which remains to this day.]
