Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday, commemorating those who have died in military service to their country. It is observed annually on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day - an occasion to decorate the graves of the war dead - and was created in the aftermath of the American Civil War. Observances are held at military graveyards, cemeteries and memorials, and military themed parades are held across the country. Memorial Day, and the long weekend that it creates, is generally seen to mark the beginning of the summer season (while Labor Day marks the end).

Why is the Poppy a Symbol of Memorial Day? SOURCE: Almanac.com (The Old Farmer’s Almanac)

In the war-torn battlefields of Europe, the common red field poppy (Papaver rhoeas) was one of the first plants to reappear. Its seeds scattered in the wind and sat dormant in the ground, only germinating when the ground was disturbed – as it was by the very brutal fighting of World War 1. John McCrae, a Canadian soldier and physician, witnessed the war first hand and was inspired to write the now-famous poem “In Flanders Fields” in 1915. He saw the poppies scattered throughout the battlefield surrounding his artillery position in Belgium. The Poppy Lady In November 1918, days before the official end of the war, an American professor named Moina Michael wrote her own poem, “We Shall Keep the Faith,” which was inspired by McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields.” In her poem she mentioned wearing the “poppy red” to honor the dead, and with that, the tradition

of adorning one’s clothing with a single red poppy in remembrance of those killed in the Great War was born. Moina herself came to be known – and honored – as “The Poppy Lady.” The Symbol Spreads Abroad The wearing of the poppy was traditionally done on Memorial Day in the United States, but the symbolism has evolved to encompass all veterans living and deceased, so poppies may be worn on Veterans Day as well. Not long after the custom began, it was adopted by other Allied nations, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, where it is still popular today. In these countries, the poppy is worn on Remembrance Day (November 11).

A letter form the Slatington Public Library The Slatington Public Library has been closed since March, and we are eagerly awaiting our entry into the“Yellow”phase of reopening. Unfortunately, we will not be able to hold our pre-school story hour, or our Wonderful World of Wildlife summer reading program. The library has signed up for a virtual summer reading program; information will be on our web page. We hope to reschedule a local history program on the Slate industry which was to be given by David Altrichter. We also needed to cancel our Arts Night which was a combined endeavor with the Woman’s Club of Slatington. The end date for our ongoing 50/50 raffle has been extended. We are trying to decide the best time to pull the winners. If you have bought tickets, be assured we will have a drawing. We do have plans in place for patrons to safely use the library once our county enters the yellow phase. Books, magazines and movies will be available for checkout. There will be no computer use by the public, and no one will be allowed to stay in the library, and masks must be worn. If you have a library card, you can access the links to the electronic resources on our home page (www.slatingtonlibrary. org). These include e-books and audio books; Novelist; Comics Plus; Zinnio to read magazines;

Rosetta Stone to learn a new language, Brainfuse for test prep, e-learning and homework help; and Ancestry and Heritage Quest. If you need to sign-up for a library card, e-mail the library at slatlib@ptd. net or slatlib2@ptd.net with your name, address and phone number, and we can assign you one. The library will be mailing out their community fundraising appeal shortly. In view of the fact that many of our other fundraisers will not take place during the Coronavirus pandemic, we ask that you consider a donation. Any amount is greatly appreciated. Please continue to stay safe, we look forward to seeing you in the Yellow.

Excerpted from: How to Connect Your Children and Family to Nature during the Pandemic

SOURCE: National League of Cities

Even at a time of physical and social distancing, connecting your children and family to the outdoors and nature is very important and can benefit people of all ages. Getting outside offers chances to combat

social isolation, maintain physical and mental health, enrich connections with nearby parks and green spaces, and set a pattern for a healthier life and ongoing stewardship of the environment. Even the smallest patch of nature is worth your attention. When you go outside it is critically important to follow the CDC guidelines for safety and public distancing. Two examples: 1. Go outside in small groups only with people you are already having close contact with, such as groups of family members or housemates living together under stay-at-home or shelter-in-place orders. 2. If a park, trail, or sidewalk is too busy or narrow to observe distancing, go elsewhere. When possible, get your family and especially your children outdoors at least once each day to connect to nature in any available form. Connecting with nature can improve one’s physical and mental health, increase a child’s curiosity of the world around them and create experiences and enjoyment for family members to share together.

Strawberry Birds Forever

CREDIT: flickr.com

SOURCE: Justsomething

The natural world is full of little wonders, and the more you learn, the more you realize just how many unique and beautiful creatures we share this planet with. And the world of birds is no exception. For example, did you know that there’s a gorgeous bird whose breeding plumage makes it look like a strawberry? There is!

LORAH’S PIG ROASTING & FARM MARKET Open Fridays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rent the roaster and cook your own pig or Full catering available, must be picked up, all sides available

The Strawberry Finch, also known as the Red Avadavat, is a small bird that is commonly found in Asia. They’re similar in size to sparrows and the females are brown and grey with random white spots. The males are quite similar in color to the females when they’re not in mating season. However, when mating season begins, the males’ plumage transforms into a beautiful, deep red hue in order to attract mates. The white spots over the otherwise red body make them look similar to strawberries, which is why they’ve been given their cute name. These little birds are just incredible to look at.

Birds, Birds and Birdwatching SOURCE: Various

Birds, birds and more birds! It’s spring, birds are everywhere, and birdwatching, or birding, is the observation of birds as a recreational activity. It’s a great outdoor activity to do alone or with your family, and it can easily be done with the naked eye, or using visual enhancement devices like binoculars and telescopes. One useful item you will want to have is a bird identification guide. You can purchase those in hard copy to carry with you, or use a bird identification guide such as this one from Birdwatcher’s Digest: https://www.birdwatchersdigest.com/bwdsite/ learn/identification.php. Birdwatching Tips Location, time of day, weather, and time of year can influence what types and numbers of birds you might observe. Get to know your regulars Some birds in your neighborhood are common, year-round residents. By learning to identify these birds by sight and sound, and by recognizing their habits you will better be able to notice when something unusual comes along.

Find a Good Spot From your own backyard or neighborhood, to a nature trail or muddy shoreline, there are many good spots to sit and let the birds come to you. A spot where birds can find food and water will increase your chances of finding interesting species. Time of Day While many familiar birds are active during the day, owls and many others become active in the evening and into the night. Time of Year Though you will likely have some year-round residents, some birds in your neighborhood may only appear in the summer, others in the winter, and still others might only be glimpsed during spring and fall migrations. Blend In Moving quietly or staying still can help you avoid scaring birds away. As long as you're in a good birding spot, the birds should come to you. Be Patient While some birds sing and announce their presence continually, some birds are quieter and blend in to their environments more than others.

NL Swimming Pool to Remain Closed for Summer 2020 submitted by Jessica B. Rehrig

After careful consideration of the public health and safety guidelines related to COVID-19, the NL Swimming Pool will not be opening for the 2020 swim season. According to the PA Recreation & Parks Society, swimming pools are to remain closed while in the red or yellow phases of reopening. We hope that our NL community patrons are staying safe and staying home to protect yourself and others. We look forward to providing a safe swim environment for this community in the years to come.

Don't be too frustrated when you can't ID a bird; the challenge of that is part of the reason the activity is rewarding. Take Notes If you keep a logbook, over time, you'll be able to anticipate the movements of birds during migrations. Practice Take note of the birds you see and hear on your walks, while you're looking out your kitchen window, or while you're doing other activities outdoors. Being observant and aware of your surroundings can heighten your senses and help you find other surprises in nature, too.

DIY: Building a Backyard Fire Pit SOURCE: diynetwork.com

To Start: Plan Your Fire Pit Design Backyard fire pits are one of the most popular of all landscaping features. They are attractive, functional and provide an outdoor gathering place. Ideally, a fire pit is constructed from fireproof material on a flat, level area at least 25 feet from a house or tree. It’s worth noting that fire pits are strictly governed by local building codes, so before you decide to add one, know the code in your area. The style and shape of a fire pit can vary. These instructions are for a circular fire pit about 2' tall with a 5' total diameter and a 3' interior diameter. For a list of tools and materials, as well as videos on each step, visit: https://www.diynetwork.com/ how-to/outdoors/structures/building-a-backyardfire-pit. Step 1: Build the Foundation Pound a rebar stake into the ground at the center of the fire pit. For a fire pit with a diameter of 5', attach a string to the stake, measure 2-1/2' (or half the length of your circumference) and tie that end of the string to a can of spray paint. Pull the string taut and walk around the stake as you spray paint

14

the marking of your circumference on the ground. Dig the space out to a depth of 6". Then use the same method as above to mark an inner circle 12" in from the outside circle. This inner circle will be the edge of the fire pit wall. Make a foundation for the stones to sit upon. Mix concrete with water until it reaches the consistency of peanut butter. Lay the wet concrete in between the two circles so it is level to the ground. Leave the center area free of concrete to allow for drainage. Build up the concrete until it is about 1-1/2" below ground level. Press rebar into the concrete for reinforcement. Smooth the surface with a trowel and let dry for 24 hours. Step 2: Build Outer Wall With the foundation set, it's time to lay the stones. Mix mortar and then shovel about 2" of it on top of the concrete base. Working in small sections, place the stones on the mortar. If you are using natural stone, mix the sizes and colors of the stones, and choose stone faces that are attractive and match the slight curve of your outline. When necessary use a chipping hammer to shape individual stones.

the stones and bricks makes the structure more stable and gives it a nicer look. Use a jointer to remove excess mortar from between the stones. Step 4: Finishing Touches To finish the structure lay a cap of pre-selected flat fieldstones on top of the wall. Add about an inch layer of mortar and then begin laying the stones, making sure the tops create a flat, even surface along the entire circumference. Add more mortar between these capstones to complete the fire pit. You can also dig out the area surrounding the fire pit, fill it in with landscape fabric to prevent weeds and cover the space with crushed stone. As the first few levels of stone begin to take shape along the outside edge of the fire pit, begin to lay fire bricks to form the inner wall of the structure. Step 3: Build Inner Fire Brick Wall Level each brick then fill the gaps in between with wet mortar, scraping away any excess. Make sure to measure the inside and outside edges of the wall periodically to maintain the wall's thickness and circular shape. Continue to raise both the bricks (against the inside circle) and the stones (against the outside circle), filling any gaps in between with stones and mortar as the wall grows. Excerpted from “The Best Exercises for Kids to Keep them Active and Healthy” SOURCE: GoodHousekeeping.com By: Marisa Lascala

Anything that gets kids up and moving is good for them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes regular physical activity can help children improve cardiorespiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control weight, and reduce the risk of developing serious health conditions. According to Jacquelyn Oldham, the Director of Curriculum and Development for The Little Gym, which has 300 locations across the country and focuses on kids between the ages of 4 months and 12 years, here are some of the exercises kids can do at home to get that heart rate up, strengthen their bodies and bones, and – most importantly – have fun. Running It may seem simple, but chasing each other around is one of the best exercises kids can do. Playing tag and organizing timed relays will get your kids up and racing. Running helps kids build strong bones while strengthening their muscles.

Squats Squats help kids build endurance, strength, and even self-confidence. Oldham likes a game called Hot Seat Squats. "Place a stool or ottoman behind them while they squat, let their bum — or “biscuits” — graze the seat and then quickly stand. We call these Hot Seat Squats because you don’t want your biscuits to get burned! You simply want to toast them. Most kids find this super fun because almost

all kids are capable of successfully executing this exercise." Skipping Not only does skipping increase heart rate, work out the total body, and improve core strength, it's also an unexpected workout for little minds as well. "Skipping is a fantastic brain booster!" Oldham says. "It engages both the left and right brain, leading to improved functioning, while improving balance and coordination." Crab Walk You know how to do these: Have your kids sit with their feet in front and hands behind, then lift

their hips off the ground so they're walking like a crab. It's funny and silly, while also developing core and arm strength. Bear Crawl If they don't like walking like a crab, flip it over and have them walk like a bear – have them crawl on their hands and feet, with their knees not touching the ground. "It starts with strengthening the core to weight-bearing, which strengthens the arms and legs. It also enhances the child’s spatial awareness. It’s a full brain and body exercise," Oldham says. Bear walk races are always popular, but parents can also sneak these in whenever they can. Rather than walking to the bathroom for bath time, why not bear crawl?

was not an exceedingly ugly monkey and its face looked familiar and I studied it for a long while before Billy Bixler came to my aid and said he looked like that old Jakey ‘Haahneberger’s’ son from the other side of the mountain. My dad always said,“The higher a monkey crawls, the better we can see its tail.” According to that our forefathers must have been well acquainted with their ancestors. There are many monkeys just now that crawl up in the air to show their tails – that is, to show that they are monkeys. The man who damns every political party except his own and thinks that his alone is right, crawls up in the air to show his tail. That attractive monkey who thinks every woman would fall in love with him as soon as she sees him, crawls in the air to show his tail. The man who no one trusts, who thinks he is only honest, is for a long time crawling up to show his tail. The man who thinks it’s a great accomplishment when he can drink so much whiskey like a pig without becoming drunk, crawls up in the air every day to show his tail. The man who thinks he owns the whole world and has a mortgage on Canada has a tail and everyone has already seen it. The man who lives a double life

Expires: 5/31/20 Not to be combined One use per household

and is outwardly good and inwardly evil and thinks the world will not find him out, will crawl up once one day to show his tail. The man who thinks he has the entire Hollerberry Township [his supposed place of residence] in his coat pocket and could be elected to office every 24 hours, will crawl up one day and show a long tail. The son with rich parents, who starts out life where his father left off, crawls up and shows his tail and comes down and finishes off where his father started. The poor man who earned his living as a blue collar worker and lets his wife spend it all on dressing up, does not have enough backbone to crawl far enough up to show his tail. The man who believes he can drink whiskey as long and as much as he wants and quit when he is ready, will crawl up one day, fall down and break his neck. The man who thinks the church would go to the devil without his help, will find himself one day up on a pole with his tail with him. And the man who thinks he can go whoring, stealing, gambling, lying, cheating, and robbing the poor and by sending large sums of money to the help convert the heathen, buy his way into heaven, will find himself one day in a place where it singes the hair of the monkey’s tail. Anyhow, the monkey is a funny creature. I think they should be able to vote, so they could gain something at the election. That would be the 16th amendment to the constitution [At the time he wrote this there were only 15.], and if the Prohibitionists would believe that they could elect

their candidate with that plank in their platform, then I truly believe they would give a monkey the vote. I believe that would not be a bad thing. A monkey would know enough to keep his mouth shut and let other people vote how they want – and many of the other type of people do not. [Thomas H. Harter was born in Centre County, PA on 28 May 1854. As a youngster he could not read or write until the age of 12 and did not begin school until he was 15. Later, after learning the printing trade and attending Penn Hall academy at Spring Hill, he embarked on a career as a publisher and editor of newspapers. He was at the Middleburg (PA) Post (1884-94) when he wrote his Dutch letters to the editor under pen name, Gottlieb Boonastiel. The content of those articles reflected that time and location. (I did some editing of this article, however.) He retired in 1932 and passed away on 31 May 1933.]

Rescue a Friend Riggs Border Collie Mix Easton Young Male Medium Health: Vaccinations up to date, spayed / neutered.

Support your local shelter!

Riggs is looking for an active family who will give him the training and love that he needs! He can be a little unruly at times, but he is a sweetheart who only wants to please his owner. In his previous home, he did live with other dogs but he was food aggressive with them. When we tested him here, he didn’t do that great with the other dogs. We feel that if he gets some training and socializing he will be fine. Older children will be best for him since he doesn’t have any manners and he can be mouthy when he plays, he may accidentally hurt a young child. Also Riggs has a very high prey drive, he can’t live in a home with cats!
