at the next meeting. We stress that the reviews are to be meaningful and aimed at providing the writer with both positive and constructive criticism. The objective is to offer value and to encourage the author to proceed with his or her work. We also discuss topics as complex as point of view and how to plow through a first draft to simpler things, but of no less importance, such as where to find ideas or which books are valuable tools for a writer. If you think you might be interested in attending, please contact Susan Layland (svlayland@gmail. com) or text at (610)462-4668.

Several local authors are gathering on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 1 p.m. to discuss subjects related to the craft of writing and to conduct critique work-sessions. Talking with other experienced and non-experienced writers is a great way to find a direction, inspire, or to learn something new about the craft. We are seriousminded writers, both published and not-published, who want to improve our writing skills and encourage others to continue to develop their talent. Each week a writer is given the opportunity to submit a work of fiction or non-fiction to be critiqued

ocean. Spending the time together (preferably outdoors) is what really counts, so have a picnic, go for a bike ride, take a hike, or do some gardening together. GENERATIONS UNITE Gather all the grandparents, great grandparents, aunts and uncles and other ‘mom’ family members together for a joint celebration. If the weather is nice a barbeque is the perfect venue. SIMPLE CELEBRATION Making a Mother’s Day celebration memorable and unique doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. It could be as simple as heading to your favorite local ice cream shop and sharing an ice cream sundae (this would be top choice in our house!). GIVE MOM THE DAY OFF This could be the best gift of all. Encourage everyone to pitch in and let the moms in your life sit back and relax. They deserve it! Have the family prepare dinner (go for something simple and prepackaged like Tyson’s chicken) and serve Mom on her special day.
GIVE TO OTHERS Mother’s Day is about honoring all mothers. This Mother’s Day help a mother in need by donating to organizations that help mothers and children. How are you planning to celebrate Mother’s Day?

7 Spring-Cleaning Tips Source: www.hgtv.com
Check out these ways to make the yearly chore less of a chore. If spring is in the air, don't let a musty house spoil it. Here are seven tips for giving the season the welcome it deserves. 1. The best refrigerator cleaner is a combination of salt and soda water. The bubbling action of the soda water combines with the abrasive texture of the salt to make a great cleaner. 2. The best way to get rid of lime buildup around the faucet it is to lay paper towels over the fixture, soak it with vinegar and let it set for an hour. The

deposits will soften and become easier to remove. 3. Clean screens with a scrap of carpeting. It makes a powerful brush that removes all the dirt. 4. Clean windows with a rag and soapy water, and then dry them with another rag. You can also go to an auto-parts store and buy a windshield squeegee, which cleans very well. 5. If drapes are looking drab, take them out of the window, remove the hooks and run them through the air-fluff cycle in the dryer along with a wet towel (to draw off the dust) for 15 minutes. Hang them back in the windows immediately. 6. Clean the blades of a ceiling fan by covering them with a coat of furniture polish. Wipe off the excess and lightly buff. 7. Sometimes comforters, blankets and pillows don't need to be cleaned, but they do need to be aired out after a long winter in your closed-up home. Take them outside and hang them on a clothesline for a day.

5 Ways to Get Your Garden Ready for Spring Prep now and enjoy a beautiful outdoor space later By Sarah Yang. www.realsimple.com
1. Clean Up
Throughout the fall and winter, your garden can be exposed to the elements and what’s left behind from storms. “You want to first start by clearing all of your garden beds and lawn of broken branches, leaves, and other debris that have collected,” says Chris Lambton, professional landscaper and host of DIY Network’s Yard Crashers.“It’s important to start these chores quickly, as your spring bulbs and plants should be popping out of the ground any day now. The sooner you clean out the beds, the less chance you have of stepping on the growing plants and damaging them.” The same cleanup method applies for your trees and bushes.“To prep for spring, trim off any broken or dead branches,” he says.“Now is also a good time to prune and shape the tree.”
2. Prep Your Garden Tools
Pull out those tools that have been sitting around all winter. “It’s almost time to use your tools again, so you want to make sure they are ready for the job,” says Lambton. “Clean off the tools with soap
and water, and use mineral spirits on wood handles. The mineral spirits will help prevent the wood from splintering. I clean my tools every spring and fall, or if they are especially dirty.”
3. Give Your Soil Some TLC
Make sure your soil is ready for planting.“To start, turn the soil over with a pitchfork and rake it out, clearing any weeds that may have grown,” he says. “I then add fresh compost from my compost bin— if you don’t have one, use store-bought compost or manure to add nutrients to the soil.”You’ll want to add compost or manure a couple of weeks before planting something, so it has time to mix well with your soil and won’t burn the roots of your new plants.
4. Make a Plan
Consult your zone to see which flowers and Continued on page 16

vegetables are best for your location. You can also head to your local nursery to get planting recommendations from local experts. “Planning your garden is the most important part,” says Lambton. “I like to plant so that you get color blooming throughout the season—so mix perennial flowers with some annuals as this will help keep color in your yard longer. It’s also good to plant according to height, making sure that taller plants don’t block the sun from shorter ones.”

Family Worship service for children in grades 1-5 and their caregivers is held in the Children’s Center at 10:45 am. Wednesday night activities for all ages are held from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. For more info, please call the church office at 610-767-1239 or at www.bethanywes.org.
5. And Don't Forget to Maintain It
Upkeep during the whole season is key. “Once your flowers start blooming you will have to deadhead to promote more flowers (depending on the species), and it’s a good time to plant annuals to supplement your perennial flowers,” says Lambton. Deadheading is when you cut off the drooping or fading flowers from the rest of the green, healthy stem.“The late spring is also a good time to put down a nice layer of mulch on the garden,” he says. “This will help hold down weeds while keeping in water for those long hot summer days ahead. It also will break down over the fall and winter and help add nutrients to the soil.”

photographs and exhibits that present our local cement history. In 2017 the volunteer museum staff of Larry Oberly, Sally Madden, LeRoy Brobst, and curator Ed Pany have presented programs in the museum, in schools and before civic groups to 4,293 students and adults. Ten cement workers were also honored from our four area cement companies. Visitors from many states and foreign countries also toured the museums. A highlight was a visit by officials from Burgenland, Austria. The museum, in conjunction with our cement companies, presented a Cement Heritage Day program in October in the middle school. The program was well received by students, teachers and administrators. Visit the middle school and you will see murals depicting the Atlas Cement Company. The school is constructed on the site of plant #4 of the former company. The halls in the schools are named to honor present and past cement companies. There are always new exhibits and artifacts donated by citizens to remember not only the industry but the men and women who worked in the industry.

More information can be found on our Facebook page or on our website about both at: www. lehightownshiphistoricalsociety.org The Historical Society will hold its first summer Open House this coming Sunday, May 6th, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Historical Centre, 3811 Lehigh Drive, Northampton, PA, next to Indian Trail Park along Route 248 just east of Cherryville. There is no admission fee to come and walk through the museum and see cool stuff from the past, showing items our ancestors used and giving us an idea of the challenging life they led. Please stop in the first Sunday of the month from now until September to check out our collections. With that in mind, when you are doing your Spring Cleaning and come across old stuff, please check with us before you toss. Lehigh Township Historical Society is interested in old documents, 28
photos or items you uncover (and no longer want) when cleaning out your house, attic, basement, garage or outbuildings. Items that are “old” or "obsolete", not necessarily expensive antiques, may be worthy of adding to our collections. Don’t throw things out, even if you think they are not worth keeping. Items from old businesses; old political items; farm, household and personal items; books; calendars and newspapers that have been stashed in the back of a drawer or closet may be great things to donate to our museum and share with others for a flashback to the past! All donations to our museum and archives are recorded and acknowledged. If you have items you would like to donate to Historical Society, please give us a call at 610-440-0151 and leave a message. We are open on most Tuesday mornings from 9 am to Noon to receive donations. Save the Date! We are currently working on plans for our St. Paul's One-Room School House Open House which will be held on Saturday, August 11th. Stay tuned for more details. If you would like to volunteer and help with the Society, we'd like to hear from you! Hope to see you soon!

Harvey's name speaks for itself as this handsome boy was brought to us from Texas after the hurricane. Harvey is approx. 7 months old and needs a quiet home as the only animal. Harvey does not do well with other animals. We would prefer an adult only home so Harvey can be relaxed after a not so stable start in life. Being bounced from shelter to shelter can be confusing to a dog and we want to see him thrive. For you Boxer lovers, Harvey acts very much like a typical boxer. Over 150 guests joined the Northampton Area Konkrete Kids Educational Foundation on Friday, April 13 at Woodstone Country Club to publicly honor the first group of outstanding graduates to be inducted into the Distinguished Alumni Wall of Honor. presented with a plaque that featured their achievements, a recent photo, and their high school graduation photo. Each inductee Konkrete Kid Foundation- From then had the left to right: Dr. Christopher opportunity to Raab, Reverend Clark Kuntz II, share with the Mrs. Joan Snyder Kuhl, Mrs. audience their Paulette Fritz, Mr. Edward Pany, memories of Mr. Troy Thrash Northampton Area High School, the impact their education and experiences at the high school and in the community had on their post graduate lives, and their gratitude to everyone for the unique honor of being inducted into the Wall of Honor. The plaques will be installed on the Distinguished Alumni Wall of Honor that will be located in Northampton Area High School’s main lobby. The Wall of Honor inductees honored on the wall will serve as an inspiration to all students and as a reminder to the entire community of Northampton Area School District’s proud education tradition and commitment to serve others. The Northampton High School Choral Ensemble and the Brass Quintet entertained the honorees and guests before dinner, and a display of NAHS student artwork and a student produced slideshow of foundation-supported activities provided a backdrop to the festivities in the ballroom. A short video produced by this same group of students was shown at the beginning of the recognition program, and it focused on district students involved in cocurricular programs funded by the foundation. The success of this celebration fundraiser and the Distinguished Alumni Wall of Honor is credited to the support of the community and the generous sponsorships of St. Luke’s University Health Network, Mr. Bruce Lack, the Home Association of Eckley E. Patch Post 470, Schisler Funeral Home, Mr. and Mrs. John Barto, Horwith Trucks, Inc., Mr. and Mrs. Scott Raab, Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Reichel, Mr. and Mrs. William Kuhl, Fella Studios, the law offices of Shulman and Shabbick, Mr. Robert Steckel and his high school staff and students, the other numerous contributors, as well as the donors to the auction. [We can all identify with many of the items on the list of Fritsch’s first poem regarding incidents that make one angry and also wish that a few were not included. And as I recall my own experience with stepping on the ‘business end’ of a rake, perhaps it is just as well that he does not elaborate on the nature or extend of the ‘anger’! During a conversation with him a few years ago, Fritsch also assured me that his poem about the mowing party was based on an actual social event in Longswamp Township (Berks county) years back. I do not have any knowledge of such a get together among farmers in the area where I grew up (Plainfield Township). But perhaps some readers may remember a similar social event in their area. Please let us know. Both poems are from his book, Der Haahne Greht (“The Rooster Crows”), which also contains Scherrenschnitte, paper cutting art.]
