I will never forget the empty feeling I had when we left the hospital that day. They say time heals all wounds, but my heart hurts as much as it did that day. The holidays just aren't the same without him. Speaking of the upcoming holidays, they are right around the corner. It's the time for crowded malls and sitting in traffic just to get there. 11 Of Our BEST Black Friday 2017 Shopping Tips Can you believe that the holidays are just around the corner? Black Friday is one of the biggest shopping days of the year… and it’s just weeks away! For many, the rush of scoring an incredible deal is enough motivation to get up at 3 a.m. to go shopping. So if you’re planning to hit the stores this year, first read these tips on how to make the most of your time and money, while maintaining your sanity. 1. Plan. Plan. PLAN. If you’ve shopped on Black Friday in the past, then you KNOW you must have a game plan before you head out. It’s easy to get caught up in the craziness and make some purchases you might regret or forget the items you came for. Create a plan and stick to it! But wait… How do you make a plan?? 2. Start with a Budget This is arguably the most important factor in holiday shopping. It’s important to be responsible with your spending, so be sure to create a budget NOW and stick to it. 4. Shop with a Friend If you need multiple, limited, door-buster items, consider finding a shopping partner or two. Then you can split up and snag all of the limited items faster. Plus, it’s way more fun to shop with friends! 5. Be Prepared to Wait in Line lines are always pretty brutal, both outside AND at the checkout line. Wear comfy shoes, and whatever outdoor gear you’ll need if you’ll be waiting outside. Also, consider leaving the kiddos at home (if this is not possible, bring toys or other items to keep them entertained while shopping). 6. Fuel Up Before Heading Out That means both your car AND your body! Bring water (or coffee!) and snacks if you’re going to be out for a long time. You don’t want to waste precious shopping time stopping to get gas or food. 7. Don’t Give Up! If the item you are looking for is not on the shelf or display, check the front of the store where other shoppers may have left items they weren’t sure about before checking out. Or, check with your cashier or a manager to see if someone happened to change their mind at the register and left the item you were looking for there – and they haven’t had time to put it back yet.

deal” (or fourteen) and before you know it, your cart is full of impulse buys. Stick to a list and shop with CASH ONLY to guarantee that you don’t overspend. 3. Know the Store Policies Familiarize yourself with each store’s price matching and/or coupon policy. Keep in mind that many stores create different price-matching policies specifically for Black Friday, so be sure to check before heading out. Price matching could save you a trip or two, but you need to know if they’ll honor it.

You can score bargain gift cards at sites like Raise. com or eBay for stores you’re planning to shop at anyway. This is a super easy way to save BIG if you plan ahead and buy them before heading out. 9. Get in the Loop Most stores have special offers and early shopping deals for loyalty reward members and email subscribers. Check your inbox the week leading up to Thanksgiving as you might find a better than Black Friday deal. Don’t forget to follow your favorite stores on Facebook and Twitter and sign up for text alerts! They often post secret deals on social media or leave hints about items that will be on sale. 10. Make Sure Your Cellphone is Ready Your phone will be your best partner when shopping on Black Friday. Make sure it has a full battery and bring a portable charger in case your battery runs low! You should also download a price comparison app or two (and make sure it has a scanner). Also, load up on rewards apps like THESE. 11. 3rd Annual Mulligans, Memories & Mediums Raises an EPIC $20,000 submitted by TAMARA KULP

The 3rd annual Mulligans, Memories and Mediums event was held on September 23rd at Blue Shamrock Golf Club in Palmerton. Again, the event raised over $20,000. Monies went into the Michael E. Kulp Memorial Fund, Inc., a nonprofit 501c3 created to support children. Proceeds from this fund benefit Children (Children’s Hospital at Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) and scholarships / small schools for children who benefit from small school environments). Last year’s event monies went to the Child Life Department at Children’s Hospital (LVHN). The Child Life Department, which runs solely on donations, is the department that provides non-

6

medical support to the child and family during their visit to the ER or during their inpatient stay. The employees of this department will hold your child’s hand during a procedure or offer a toy, crayons, an iPad, or perhaps a movie in the middle of the night. They are the“comforting caretakers”in an unfamiliar environment. Recently LVHN moved their Pediatric Oncology infusion center to the main campus on Cedar Crest Blvd. which now allows the Child Life Department to reach the outpatient oncology kids during their treatments as well. Additional monies went to Saint John Neumann Regional School (SJNRS), the Michael E. Kulp Scholarship Fund at SJNRS, The Circle of Seasons Charter School (Fogelsville), The Mercy Learning Center (Allentown), and The Hillside School (Macungie). The fundraiser kicked off in the afternoon with 132 golfers including men, women and children. Non-golfing participants enjoyed private mediumship readings with local mediums (Martha Peterson, Stan Kestrel, Roseann Turek, Lisa Mandell, Laura Ophoff, and Aly Greenstreet). Guests also had the opportunity to participate in painting at the pub with artist Paula Zelienka where moms and children painted “Epic Sunsets.” The dinner and social evening had 230 guests in attendance for announcement of the golf awards, door prizes, over 70 baskets for a Chinese Auction, a Silent Auction, announcement of the Spam Recipe Contest winners and entertainment by the musical duo “Feelin’ Good.” After dinner and awards, 40 guests participated in a mediumship gallery where Spiritual Evidential Medium Gloria Weichand brought messages through from the other side to the group. Jeanne has written two books, Whispers from the Past and The Gift at the Springhouse. She explained that after her retirement, her husband urged her to write a book, something she always wanted to do. The problem was she was not sure how to go about it, how to write a book. Thanksgiving Facts Source: Softschools.com

Interesting Thanksgiving Facts: The first Thanksgiving in the United States was held at Plymouth in 1621. This feast was prompted by a good harvest and celebrated by pilgrims and puritans. It wasn't until the 1660s that the harvest feast became an annual affair. Each year the President of the United States pardons a turkey. This lucky turkey is guaranteed to spend the rest of its life living freely and not ending up on a turkey platter. When the pilgrims arrived on the Mayflower, the Wampanoag Indians taught them how to cultivate the land. These Indians were invited to the first Thanksgiving in 1621. The first Thanksgiving in 1621 was celebrated for three days. The first Thanksgiving feast was made up of lobster, chestnuts, onions, leeks, dried fruit, cabbage, carrots, chicken, rabbit, honey and maple syrup and other items. There were no mashed potatoes, pumpkin pies, or even corn on the cob at the first Thanksgiving feast.

The writer of Mary Had a Little Lamb, Sarah Josepha Hale, is thought to be the person who persuaded Abraham Lincoln to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November to be the national day for Thanksgiving. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade began in the 1920s and is still held today. Approximately 280 million turkeys are consumed on Thanksgiving in the United States.

In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. THANKSGIVING AT PLYMOUTH

In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers—an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the New World. After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth. Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the

colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received an astonishing visit from an Abenaki Indian who greeted them in English. Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. He also helped the settlers forge an alliance with the Wampanoag, a local tribe, which would endure for more than 50 years and tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans. In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”—although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the time—the festival lasted for three days. While no record exists of the historic banquet’s exact menu, the Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow wrote in his journal that Governor Bradford sent four men on a “fowling” mission in preparation for the event, and that the Wampanoag guests arrived bearing five deer. Historians have suggested that many of the dishes were likely prepared using traditional Native American spices and cooking methods. Because the Pilgrims had no oven and the Mayflower’s sugar supply had dwindled by the fall of 1621, the meal did not feature pies, cakes or other desserts, which have become a hallmark of contemporary celebrations. Check out the Thanksgiving by the Numbers infographic for more facts about how the first Thanksgiving compares to modern holiday traditions. THANKSGIVING BECOMES AN OFFICIAL HOLIDAY

Governor Bradford to call for a religious fast. Days of fasting and thanksgiving on an annual or occasional basis became common practice in other New England settlements as well. During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress designated one or more days of thanksgiving a year, and in 1789 George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation by the national government of the United States; in it, he called upon Americans to express their gratitude for the happy conclusion to the country’s war of independence and the successful ratification of the U.S. Constitution. His successors John Adams and James Madison also designated days of thanks during their presidencies. In 1817, New York became the first of several states to officially adopt an annual Thanksgiving holiday; each celebrated it on a different day, however, and the American South remained largely unfamiliar with the tradition. In 1827, the noted magazine editor and prolific writer Sarah Josepha Hale— author, among countless other things, of the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”—launched a campaign to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. For 36 years, she published numerous editorials and sent scores of letters to governors, senators, presidents and other politicians. Abraham Lincoln finally heeded her request in 1863, at the

height of the Civil War, in a proclamation entreating all Americans to ask God to “commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife” and to “heal the wounds of the nation.” He scheduled Thanksgiving for the final Thursday in November, and it was celebrated on that day every year until 1939, when Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday up a week in an attempt to spur retail sales during the Great Depression. Roosevelt’s plan, known derisively as Franksgiving, was met with passionate opposition, and in 1941 the president reluctantly signed a bill making Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November. THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS

In many American households, the Thanksgiving celebration has lost much of its original religious significance; instead, it now centers on cooking and sharing a bountiful meal with family and friends. Turkey, a Thanksgiving staple so ubiquitous it has become all but synonymous with the holiday, may or may not have been on offer when the Pilgrims hosted the inaugural feast in 1621. Today, however, nearly 90 percent of Americans eat the bird— whether roasted, baked or deep-fried—on Thanksgiving, according to the National Turkey Continued on page 24

Federation. Other traditional foods include stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Volunteering is a common Thanksgiving Day activity, and communities often hold food drives and host free dinners for the less fortunate. Parades have also become an integral part of the holiday in cities and towns across the United States. Presented by Macy’s department store since 1924, New York City’s Thanksgiving Day parade is the largest and most famous, attracting some 2 to 3 million spectators along its 2.5-mile route and

drawing an enormous television audience. It typically features marching bands, performers, elaborate floats conveying various celebrities and giant balloons shaped like cartoon characters. Beginning in the mid-20th century and perhaps even earlier, the president of the United States has “pardoned” one or two Thanksgiving turkeys each year, sparing the birds from slaughter and sending them to a farm for retirement. A number of U.S. governors also perform the annual turkey pardoning ritual. THANKSGIVING CONTROVERSIES

For some scholars, the jury is still out on whether the feast at Plymouth really constituted the first Thanksgiving in the United States. Indeed, historians have recorded other ceremonies of thanks among European settlers in North America that predate the Pilgrims’ celebration. In 1565, for instance, the Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilé invited members of the local Timucua tribe to a dinner in St. Augustine, Florida, after holding a mass to thank God for his crew’s safe arrival. On December 4, 1619, when 38 British settlers reached a site known as Berkeley Hundred on the banks of Virginia’s James River, they read a proclamation designating the date as “a day of thanksgiving to Almighty God.” THANKSGIVING’S ANCIENT ORIGINS

developed in the colonies of New England, its roots can be traced back to the other side of the Atlantic. Both the Separatists who came over on the Mayflower and the Puritans who arrived soon after brought with them a tradition of providential holidays—days of fasting during difficult or pivotal moments and days of feasting and celebration to thank God in times of plenty. As an annual celebration of the harvest and its bounty, moreover, Thanksgiving falls under a category of festivals that spans cultures, continents and millennia. In ancient times, the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans feasted and paid tribute to their gods after the fall harvest. Thanksgiving also

bears a resemblance to the ancient Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot. Finally, historians have noted that Native Americans had a rich tradition of commemorating the fall harvest with feasting and merrymaking long before Europeans set foot on their shores.

Rescue a Friend Jetta

Jetta is our adorable “tripawd.” She is overlooked and quite sad. We think it’s because she’s missing her fromt leg but honestly she doesn’t miss a beat! She hops on and off this table and has NO trouble running and playing with other dogs. Jetta is adorable and is excellent with other dogs.

And the chattering of the guineas And this cackle of the geese, And the rooster crows his “Look here once, Yo!” And struts along the fence. Oh, then one feels at his right best, After a restful night When the morning sun greets him, And happily ‘laughs’ in his eyes; One goes bare-headed to the barn Feeding the cattle out of barrel and sack, When the frost is on the pumpkin, And this corn fodder [is] in shock. There is something, kind of hearty All around here in the air, When the summer heat is past And the cool fall [has a] wisp of mist. One indeed misses all the flowers And the blossoms of the trees Where the humming birds (Std. Ger.) And the bees were at home. Continued on page 38

Touch of Dutch

When the frost is on the punkin (James Whitcomb Riley’s original dialect poem)

Continued from page 37

The air is still pleasing And the scenery before the eye On a sunny fresh morning Of an early fall day, Is a picture which belittles the artist’s Finest taste in color. When the frost is on the pumpkin And this corn fodder [is] in shock. This rattling, rough fluttering Which ‘laughs’ out of the cornstalk tassels, This rustling of tangled foliage In the golden morning splendor, The stubble in the furrow – are indeed A kind of a desolate picture. Still they tell of a rich harvest, And the barn also filled. The mowing machine in the wagon shed, The straw stack in the pen, The horses in the stalls and the hay In the mow or loft over threshing floor! My heart begins to throb, oh It goes like the clock, “Tick, Tock,” When the frost is on the pumpkin And this corn fodder [is] in shock.

When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock, And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the struttin’ turkey-cock, And the clackin of the guineys and the cluckin’ of the hens, And the rooster's hallylooyer as he tiptoes on the fence; O it's then's the times a feller is ‘tfeelin at his best, With the risin’ sun to greet him from a night of peaceful rest, As he leaves the house bareheaded, and goes out to feed the stock, When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock. They's something kindo’ harty-like about the atmusfere When the heat of summer's over and the coolin’ fall is here — Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossums on the trees, And the mumble of the hummin'-birds and buzzin’ of the bees; But the air's so appetizin’; and the landscape through the haze Of a crisp and sunny morning of the airly autumn days

Is a pictur that no painter has the colorin’ to mock — When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock. The husky, rusty russel of the tossels of the corn, And the raspin’ of the tangled leaves, as golden as the morn; The stubble in the furries — kindo’ lonesome-like, but still A-preachin’ sermuns to us of the barns they growed to fill; The strawstack in the medder, and the reaper in the shed; The hosses in theyr stalls below — the clover overhead! — O, it sets my hart a-clickin’ like the tickin’ of a clock, When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock!

Indiana. During his lifetime he was known as the "Hoosier Poet" and "Children's Poet" for his dialect works and his children's poetry respectively. His poems tended to be humorous or sentimental, and of the approximately one thousand poems that Riley authored, the majority are in dialect, as is his When the frost is on the punkin. Riley picked up the cadence and character of that dialect from travelers along the old Cumberland Road, which ran through his hometown of Greenfield, IN. It was their speech that greatly influenced the poems he wrote in that nineteenth century Hoosier dialect. Included among his famous works are Little Orphant Annie and The Raggedy Man. -Wikipedia article on James Whitcomb Riley ] Hallicher Dankdaag! Happy Thanksgiving!

The Big Benefits Of Small Business Saturday Mike Kappel www.forbes.com

There’s no denying that small businesses are essential for healthy local economies. This November, small business owners can participate in Small Business Saturday, a shopping holiday designated for small companies. Shopping small is a big deal It’s easy to think small businesses get overshadowed by major corporations and Black Friday madness. Mom-and-pop shops don’t have the resources to pull off million-dollar promotions. But, they do have the upper hand when it comes to impacting the economy. In fact, small businesses drive much of the United

States economy. Just how many small businesses are there in the U.S.? Currently, there are 28 million American small businesses, which account for 54% of all U.S. sales. And, it’s not just the number of small businesses that give them an economic advantage. Small businesses provide many benefits to consumers that large corporations simply cannot. Unique offerings Small businesses offer one-of-a-kind products and services. These unique items add character to local communities and inspire interest in customers. Neighborhood businesses that sell original goods keep money filtering through local economies. Exceptional service More than just a product or service, small businesses offer customers an experience. Local companies can provide one-on-one service that is often impossible for large corporations. Excellent service encourages customers to build personal connections with the businesses they buy from. Keep money local Circulating money in the same locality helps that community thrive. A strong network of local funds enables individuals and businesses within a community to support each other.

MY DAUGHTER IS GOING TO BE A CHIROPRACTOR!

My eldest daughter Jacqueline, is planning to attend New York Chiropractic College when she finishes her undergraduate studies at Moravian. I couldn’t be happier! You see, this is the ultimate confirmation of all that I have vested myself in. I love chiropractic and helping people feel amazing again! Jacqueline plans to focus on infants and children. She understands that conditions like collic, bed wetting, headaches, night pain, stomach issues, ear infections, and so much more, can be helped with gentle chiropractic adjustments.

We help so many kids! Bring your children in to see if we can help them too!
