Small Business Saturday Small Business Saturday is celebrated on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in the United States, and on the first Saturday in December in the U.K. In the U.S., this holiday is considered to be the middle portion of a trifecta of three shopping holidays which includes this holiday, Black Friday and Cyber Monday,. It is a day on which people are supposed to patronize small, brick and mortar businesses with their holiday shopping. History This holiday was created by American Express in 2010 and aggressively marketed it via social media, radio and National broadcasting. Today, it is a registered trademark of American Express. In 2013, the United Kingdom adopted their own Small Business Saturday after the success of the American holiday. The U.K holiday is celebrated on the first Saturday in December. Customs, Traditions And Celebrations Like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the main focus of this day is on shopping. On Black Friday, Americans are expected to hit the big chain stores and do their shopping. On Cyber Monday, citizens

are expected to shop online and on this day, people are expected to visit the smaller brick and mortar stores—otherwise known as “mom and pop stores”. However, while shopping is the main focus of this holiday, it is not a necessary component. People who want to acknowledge this day can do so promoting it on social media or by recommending your favorite small business to your friends and family.

Great season for the Bulldogs The 2019 Competitive Flags had an amazing season lead by Coach Remaley and his assistants. They finished the season with a 7-3 record, good enough to qualify for the 4th and final playoff spot in the Booster Club Colonial League Playoffs. The Bulldogs were faced with playing the #1 seed an undefeated Southern Lehigh who held a 10-0 record for the season at their field. The Bulldogs played their best game of the year and knocked off the #1 seed by a score of 20-19. It was an incredibly exciting game. After their victory they earned themselves a spot in the championship game. After coming up short against a good Northwestern team, the bulldogs finished 2nd in the league. It was a very successful season for the young Bulldogs, there are good things coming for these young men.

Reitz Allentown (PA) No one has ever seen God This sermon was given at [a PA German church service] at the Suedberg Church of God in Pine

Grove on September 18, 2005. “No one has ever seen God.” It is written thus in the Holy Scriptures in the first chapter of [the Gospel] of John. And that is true. No one has ever seen God. One cannot see God like I can see you sitting down there or like you can see me standing up here. God is what we call a Spirit; He has no abdomen, no head, and no hands and feet and arms and legs. From a different perspective, it is not true. People have already seen God. I mean to say, they had an experience that showed them or said something about God. They saw God in other people – in what people do or what they are. The remainder of the Continued on page 16

verse which I had read earlier says: “… the only Son who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known.” Earlier in the first chapter of John: “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory.” And still earlier when Philip said to Jesus, “Show us the Father, then we will be content”, Philip received the answer: “Whoever seen me has seen the Father.” The people that saw Jesus, saw God. Let me give some examples. The first, Zacchaeus. He was a little man, a little short. One day Jesus came to his village. So that he could see Jesus better, he crawled up into a tree. Jesus seen him there and said,“Come down Zacchaeus, today I will visit you.” I don’t know what they talked about that day, but he must have become ‘big’ that day. When Jesus left him, Zacchaeus said,“Half of all that I have I will give to the poor, and if I cheated anyone, I will give it back four-fold of what I took from him. There in his own house, when Jesus visited him, Zacchaeus saw God. He changed his ways and became charitable. Yet let us think on another – the man on his way from Jerusalem to Jericho. The robbers sprang out of the brush and jumped him, knocked him down

and beat him, stole his clothing and took all his money. There he lay, near death. Twice someone come walking by, two times hope for him. But both walked out around him and did not help. Finally, a third man came, someone from outside his country, a Samaritan. He was merciful, held up the poor man, poured oil and wine on his wounds, sat him on his donkey and took him to a place where someone could take care of him. In that Samaritan, that poor man saw God. 1900 years later at the beginning of that century, a young man in Germany heard what the white people, especially in America, did to the black people in Africa. Then he said to himself, “I want to do something to make this right. Perhaps I can go to Africa and help those people.” He was already at that time a renowned organ player and also well educated in theology. But he thought he could best help with medicine. So he went back to the university for several years and became a doctor and at last, he went to Lambaréné (in what is now Gabon) in Africa. There he built a hospital. Soon the First World War started and since he was German they imprisoned him. When the war was over (and he was freed) he once again gave organ recitals to raise money and went back to Africa. He was there longer than 50 years and worked until he passed away at

age of 90. In Albert Schweitzer’s hospital, where he healed all sorts of diseases, many people say God. And today, all around the world people can see God: In food supplies and medicine and clothing that we sent, schools and hospitals and homes that we built and wells that we dig so that they have water to drink and irrigate the land to grow food, in places where the gospel is preached – in all those ways, people see God. It’s true: No one has seen God. But Jesus has made him known. And his followers also show God. In every Christian one should see God. My dear friends: When someone looks at you, what do they see? Hopefully, God. [Reverend Phares O. Reitz, 93, of Allentown, died Thursday, July 15, 2010 in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown. He was the husband of the late Eleanor R. (Lippiatt) Reitz, who died in June 1998. He was born in Leck Kill, PA in 1917, and graduated from Muhlenberg College in 1936 and from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia in 1939. He was ordained in the United Lutheran Church in America, and pastored several churches, the last being St. Stevens, Allentown. He also served on several denominational committees and various civic organizations and often spoke in the Dialect at PA German church services, Grundsow Lodges,

and Fersammlings. (He spoke several times at our PA German Friends group at Allentown.) He was survived by two daughters and two sons, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren and two brothers.]

10 Tips to Get the Best Black Friday Deals Source: www.thebalance.com

Shopping on Black Friday isn't for the faint of heart, so get prepared. Black Friday is the most competitive selling day of the year, so it makes sense that it's also one of the busiest days to shop. There are so many Black Friday deals, special sales hours and doorbusters that it can overwhelm even the most seasoned shoppers. But it's a day of challenge for bargain hunters, with one major goal driving them — to snag huge discounts on great products before everything sells out. These insider tips explain how they manage it. 1. Check out the Ads And the Apps Your local Thanksgiving Day newspaper will be stuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey with ads, coupons, and circulars. This is a major source for local Black Friday savings so don't toss it aside as you head for the kitchen. It will also help you organize your day to maximize savings because many stores offer special discounts that are time-specific, such as early bird sales and doorbusters. Many Android and iOS apps are designed to make shopping for the best deals on Black Friday even easier. They can help you find the best place

to park at the mall or even the best, least-trafficked route to stores. They'll alert you when the stores you want to visit have coupons and special deals available, and they'll help you compare prices while you shop. 2. Do Your Research Well Before Friday Get your research out of the way as soon as possible if you're hoping to scoop up a deal on a big-ticket item during the Black Friday sales. A bad product is a bad deal no matter how cheap it is, and being knowledgeable about the items you want to Continued on page 36

buy will help you avoid being sucker-punched with loud advertising for iffy deals. 3. Compare Prices Use price-comparison internet shopping sites like PriceGrabber.com to assist you in comparing product prices. Compare the "options" included with the product. Some retailers will lowball an advertised price on a stripped-down product and then charge you extra for the necessary parts that will make it perform as expected. A good example of this is super low-priced computer printers that

Look for Early-Bird Shopper Discounts It used to be that the early-bird shopper would get all the best worms on Black Friday, but now some stores open on Thanksgiving. They'll often advertise doorbuster prices, and there are also midnight madness sales and early-bird specials. Check the list of stores for holiday hours so you don't miss a good deal. Also, find out which malls in your area are giving out mall gift certificates based on how much you spend there. This can add up to significant savings if you do a lot of your shopping at the same center. 5. Plan Where You Want to Shop Knowing when the stores are having their biggest sales and comparing prices on the things that you want to buy will allow you to come up with a strategy as to where to shop first. Prioritize the stores you don't want to miss going to so you don't miss a good deal. Most malls and shopping centers have center maps on their websites. Checking them can tell you where to park, which entrance to use to access your top stores, which stores are located close to each other, and the best routes to take. 6. Beat the Crowds With Night Owl Discounts on Thanksgiving Internet shoppers can shop online in the predawn hours of Black Friday. Many retailers will post

Black Friday specials that can be ordered online and picked up at your local store. Special "web only" deals will also be available starting as early as Thanksgiving day. 7. Bring the Ads Many stores offer a "lowest price" guarantee, but you might be required to produce proof of the exact product that's being advertised for less. Take any print ads you've saved with you. Most local retailers won't meet internet prices even when the product is advertised on the same company's website, but it can't hurt to try. Print the web page that details the product and shows the advertised price. It might give you additional bargaining power and push the salesperson into waiving other charges such as assembly fees. You might find that even stores that usually offer guarantees on having the lowest price won't do it on doorbuster and early-bird specials. 8. Know Store Policies Knowing a store's policy on returns can help you determine where to buy. A previous trend of extending "return days" during the holidays is being seen less and less these days. Many retailers are including restocking fees and shorter return deadlines. Almost all the major retail chains have

Black Friday Tips Continued from page 37

clamped down on requiring receipts for returns and exchanges, and many keep a database of individuals who tend to abuse return policies. If you get onto an "abuse" list, prepare to be turned down. 9. Ask for Gift Receipts Gift receipts generally include a description of the item purchased but not what you paid for the item. Including these receipts inside gift boxes will make returns or exchanges easier for the gift recipient. The recipient might be turned down for returning or exchanging the item without proof of purchase, or could risk receiving an exchange for the current selling price of the item. 10. Saying "Charge It" Can Pay Off There's obviously no bargain to be had in running up high credit card bills and paying big interest rates after the holidays, but using the right charge card can be of value to consumers when they have proper spending disciplines intact. Many credit card companies entice consumers with free benefits, including free warranties, return protection, and sale price protection. • Warranty Coverage: Your credit card company

NOV 30

might offer to double or triple a manufacturer's warranty for free on a product you purchase — a good option instead of purchasing a service contract that costs money and has a shorter duration period. • Return Protection: A credit card firm could guarantee a refund on a product for up to 90 days while the store might not. This is becoming particularly more important as retailers stiffen the allotted return days. • Sale Price Protection: Some credit card companies offer this protection and will refund you the difference if a product you buy is marked down further than the price you paid within a certain time frame, usually 60 days. The enormous amount of holiday advertising, both locally and online, can be confusing and nearly paralyzing to the average Black Friday bargain hunter. Maximize the benefits of hitting the stores on a day when there are big crowds and better deals around every corner. Develop a plan and do some preliminary research. It will help ensure that your Black Friday is a shopping success. Have fun saving money while you shop!

LAUGH OUT LOUD

Thanksgiving Facts Source: www.history.com

Thanksgiving is a day when many Americans gather together with family for an afternoon of food and football, but just how far do people travel to spend turkey day at Grandma’s house? Which state grows the most cranberries, and how big was the world’s largest pumpkin pie? Discover the answer to these questions, as well as many more facts about popular Thanksgiving foods and traditions. Thanksgiving Over the Years Though many competing claims exist, the most familiar story of the first Thanksgiving took place in Plymouth Colony, in present-day Massachusetts, in 1621. More than 200 years later, President Abraham Lincoln declared the final Thursday in November as a national day of thanksgiving. Congress finally made Thanksgiving Day an official national holiday in 1941. Did you know? Sarah Josepha Hale petitioned for a national Thanksgiving holiday for close to 40 years, believing that "Thanksgiving, like the Fourth of July, should be considered a national festival and observed by all our people." Sarah Josepha Hale, the enormously influential magazine editor and author who waged a tireless campaign to make Thanksgiving a national holiday in the mid-19th century, was also the author of the classic nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” In 2001, the U.S. Postal Service issued a commemorative Thanksgiving stamp. Designed by the artist Margaret Cusack in a style resembling traditional folk-art needlework, it depicted a cornucopia overflowing with fruits and vegetables, under the phrase “We Give Thanks.”

Thanksgiving On the Roads The American Automobile Association (AAA) estimated that 42.2 million Americans traveled 50 miles or more from home over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in 2010. Thanksgiving On the Table • According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Minnesota is the top turkey-producing state in America, with a planned production total of 46.5 million in 2011. Six states—Minnesota, North Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, Virginia, and Indinia—account for nearly two-thirds of the 248 million turkeys that will be raised in the U.S. this year. • The National Turkey Federation estimated that 46 million turkeys—one fifth of the annual total of 235 million consumed in the United States—were eaten at Thanksgiving. • In a survey conducted by the National Turkey Federation, nearly 88 percent of Americans said they eat turkey at Thanksgiving. The average weight of turkeys purchased for Thanksgiving is 15 pounds, which means some 690 million pounds of turkey were consumed in the U.S. during Thanksgiving in 2007. • Cranberry production in the U.S. is expected to reach 750 million pounds in 2011. Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington are the top cranberry growing states. • Illinois, California, Pennsylvania and New York are the major pumpkin growing states, together they produced 1.1 billion pounds of pumpkin in 2010. Total U.S. production was over 1.5 billion pounds. • The sweet potato is most plentifully produced in North Carolina, which grew 972 million pounds of the popular Thanksgiving side dish vegetable in 2010. Other sweet potato powerhouses included California and Mississippi, and the top producing states together generated over 2.4 billion pounds of the tubers. • According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest pumpkin pie ever baked weighed 2,020 pounds and measured just over 12 feet long. It was baked on October 8, 2005 by the New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Growers in Ohio, and included 900 pounds of pumpkin, 62 gallons of evaporated milk, 155 dozen eggs, 300 pounds of sugar, 3.5 pounds of salt, 7 pounds of cinnamon, 2 pounds of pumpkin spice and 250 pounds of crust. In a Day’s Work: From the Mundane to the Mission As the Executive Director, there are many parts of my job that are truly necessary yet pretty mundane. Today was one of those days when I needed to focus on things like compiling information for tax returns and reviewing reports. As I sat crunching numbers, I could hear two of our advocates on the phone from my office and it stopped me in my tracks. I became unexpectedly overwhelmed by the two conversations I could hear at once. It was two different callers, each calling us for the first time. I overheard questions about their children, reassurances about privacy of their information, and encouragement for one of them to seek medical treatment. They discussed safety plans and scheduled counseling appointments. What I heard was not uncommon here at Turning Point. Each day we have seven new people reach out to us for support and assistance. I don’t know why the sounds of these calls stopped me today, but I began to cry at the sound of them. I’m not sure why. Maybe because one of the callers was from a town where I had lived. Maybe I was overwhelmed because hearing two calls at once reminds me of the sheer number of people who need our services. Maybe I’m sad because that after 41 years and thousands of programs, events, and advertisements, these two people may still not have known we were here for them until recently. Each of us at Turning Point know that it is a privilege for a survivor of intimate abuse to come forward. One of the most long-lasting and insidious impacts of partner abuse is that it makes you question the motives of those you should trust. When someone you choose to love controls, manipulates, and violates you, it requires a huge leap of faith to again place your trust in others. I know those callers I overheard today made a conscious choice to trust us. This is always an honor and one that we don’t take lightly. I am glad that occasionally, it still brings me to tears, as it drives my passion and commitment. I will do my part, both the mission-focused and the mundane, to be sure we are here and able to help when someone reaches out. I hope you will do what you can to help us in raising awareness and supporting our work. In peace, Lori Sywensky Executive Director NOVEMBER 21, 2019 || townandcountrygazette.com

Thanksgiving Around the Country • Three towns in the U.S. take their name from the traditional Thanksgiving bird, including Turkey, Texas (pop. 465); Turkey Creek, Louisiana (pop. 363); and Turkey, North Carolina (pop. 270). • Originally known as Macy’s Christmas Parade— to signify the launch of the Christmas shopping season—the first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade took place in New York City in 1924. It was launched by Macy’s employees and featured animals from the Central Park Zoo. Today, some 3 million people attend the annual parade and another 44 million watch it on television. • Tony Sarg, a children’s book illustrator and puppeteer, designed the first giant hot air balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1927. He later created the elaborate mechanically animated window displays that grace the façade of the New York store from Thanksgiving to Christmas. • Snoopy has appeared as a giant balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade more times than any other character in history. As the Flying Ace, Snoopy made his sixth appearance in the 2006 parade. • The first time the Detroit Lions played football

on Thanksgiving Day was in 1934, when they hosted the Chicago Bears at the University of Detroit stadium, in front of 26,000 fans. The NBC radio network broadcast the game on 94 stations across the country–the first national Thanksgiving football broadcast. Since that time, the Lions have played a game every Thanksgiving (except between 1939 and 1944); in 1956, fans watched the game on television for the first time.

This event was a great success and resulted in

over 175 lucky basket and prize winners! The kitchen was busy as well, with menu items such as halupkies, cabbage and noodles, pierogies, BBQs, and clam chowder enjoyed by attendees, and of course many took home a sweet treat from the bake sale, too. Many thanks for supporting the Bazaar, and we hope to see returning and new faces at our upcoming events. Happy Holidays and blessed New Year to all!

Northampton Area High School presents classic 'And Then There Were None’ by KERI LINDENMUTH

The Northampton Area High School Theatre Company brought Agatha Christie’s classic mystery novel to life on stage. For two nights only, on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9, the theatre troupe turned the high school auditorium into Solder Island, the remote island mansion at the heart of Christie’s novel. There, ten strangers gather for what they think is a short getaway. Soon, it becomes evident that there are darker powers at play. The guests on the island include judge Justice Wargrave (played

by Lauren Lalik), secretary Vera Claythorne (played by Ericka Csencsits), soldier Philip Lombard (played by Andrew Van Antwerp), detective William Blore (played by Madelyn Rex), Dr. Armstrong (played by Cade Kocher), butler Mr. Rogers (played by Shawn-Tyler Laub), spinster Emily Brent (played by Molly Wiesner), General Mackenzie (played by Cole Kiefer), maid Mrs. Rogers (played by Shelby Wandler), and reckless adventurer Anthony Marston (played by Anna Svolos). Colin Finney plays Fred Narracott, the fisherman taking the guests to the island. All of the characters are really caricatures of men and women seen in typical mystery pieces. It was something director Gianna Neal knew would be new for students. She said they excelled on stage. “Even though these characters are very unusual and different than the students themselves, they have embodied these crazy personalities and have made them their own,” she said in her director’s notes. During the guests’ first evening, their fun is interrupted by a mysterious voice, accusing them all of causing the death of friends,

family, and strangers. Now, they must each pay for the harm they have caused. One-by-one, the guests mysteriously meet their deadly fates, with the nursery rhyme “Ten Little Soldiers” serving as a blueprint of who will come next. The guests turn against each other, knowing that one of them must be the murderer. The play is, according to Neal, “extremely dark, creepy, and dramatic.” However, there is still humor found throughout the production, from the nagging Emily Brent to the flirtatious Philip Lombard. Readers familiar with the novel would have noticed a few differences, including a unique gender bent take on Justice Wargrave and an ending that shocked even fans of the novel. The theatre company will return to the stage in a much lighter production this spring, performing Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella from March 19 until March 22.

Local Families Make Global Impact Through Operation Christmas Child This month, sites in the Lehigh Valley area will be among 5,000 U.S. drop-off locations collecting shoebox gifts for children overseas during Operation Christmas Child's National Collection Week, Nov. 18-25. Families, churches and groups are busy transforming empty shoeboxes into fun gifts filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items. The Samaritan's Purse project partners with local churches across the globe to deliver these tangible expressions of God's love to children affected by war, disease, disaster, poverty and famine. For many of these children, it will be the first gift they have ever received. This year, residents hope to collect more than 44,137 gifts to contribute to the 2019 global goal of reaching 11 million children.
