traffic incidents, according to Injury Facts. Nontraffic incidents include those occurring on driveways, in parking lots or on private property. NSC research reveals almost 18% of these deaths occurred at road crossings or intersections. Lack of visibility because of low lighting at night also plays a factor in these deaths. Here's a scary statistic: Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. In 2017, October ranked No. 2 in motor vehicle deaths by month, with 3,700. July is No. 1, with 3,830 deaths. Costume Safety To help ensure adults and children have a safe holiday, the American Academy of Pediatrics has compiled a list of Halloween safety tips. Before Halloween arrives, be sure to choose a costume that won't cause safety hazards. • All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant Continued on page 4

• Avoid masks, which can obstruct vision • If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags, or give them glow sticks • When buying Halloween makeup, make sure it is nontoxic and always test it in a small area first • Remove all makeup before children go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritation When They're on the Prowl • A responsible adult should accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds • If your older children are going alone, plan and review a route acceptable to you • Agree on a specific time children should return home • Teach your children never to enter a stranger's home or car • Instruct children to travel only in familiar, welllit areas and stick with their friends • Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home • Children and adults are reminded to put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don't run, across the street

Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. 2. cornstarch. Pour back into slow cooker and toss with beef until combined. Add broccoli a cook covered another 20-30 minutes. 4. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions, serve over rice. First and foremost, this dish is delicious! I love how quick and simple it is. It immediately became a family favorite, I’ve made it a few times in the past month or so and we’re not sick of it yet! I am cooking for some very picky eaters so I did omit ingredients, such as the Sriracha, garlic, green onions and sesame seeds. Because of this I cut the brown sugar from a ½ cup to a ¼ cup and I served my dinner over noodles instead of rice. My family loves this recipe so much that I usually add more beef and broccoli and liquid just so there’s plenty for leftovers. I already can’t wait to eat this dinner again, I hope you love it just as much-good luck and enjoy!

Free turkeys are back at Giant Food Stores submitted by Laura Jacobs

GIANT Food Stores announced today that beginning Friday, Oct. 11, customers can begin earning rewards points toward a free turkey certificate every time they shop in-store using their BonusCard. New this year, customers enrolled in GIANT Choice Rewards can earn their free turkey by redeeming points online and earn free side dishes, desserts and more to round out their holiday meal by using the GIANT or MARTIN’S app. “Thanksgiving is all about bringing family and friends together to share a special meal but with the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we know that’s easier said than done,” said John Ruane, chief merchandising officer, GIANT Food Stores. “At GIANT, we want to do everything we can to make Thanksgiving easier for our customers. Through our brand-new GIANT Choice Rewards program, we’re giving our customers a chance to redeem points for free sides and desserts, as well as a free turkey, saving them both time and money, so they can focus on the people gathered around their table instead of what’s being served on it.” Customers who earn 400 rewards points from Friday, Oct. 11 through Thursday, Nov. 28 can

choose to redeem the points for a free turkey certificate. Paper reward certificates can be redeemed from Friday, Nov. 15 through Thursday, Nov. 28 at any GIANT or MARTIN’S Food Market location; digital reward certificates can be redeemed during that same period online or instore. Customers can also choose to substitute their free turkey certificate towards a free family size lasagna or tofurkey or for $1 off per pound of the turkey brand of their choice. The more engaged customers are with GIANT’S digital platforms, the greater the rewards they have an opportunity to earn. Customers who are digitally engaged in the GIANT Choice Rewards program through the GIANT or MARTIN’S app can also redeem points on up to 14 free items including King’s Hawaiian rolls, Ocean Spray cranberry sauce, Russet potatoes, GIANT brand ice cream and GIANT’S fresh-baked holiday pies. A current tally of a customer’s extra rewards points can be found at the bottom of their receipt or via the GIANT or MARTIN’S app. Customers are encouraged to check their store for specific program details and eligibility or contact GIANT/ MARTIN’S Customer Support at 1-888-814-4268.

There are a few considerations when choosing which non-food items to hand out. First, some nonfood items still contain food allergens, such as some brands of moldable clay, which may contain wheat. Additionally, try to choose latex-free items, as there are children who have latex allergies. Can I Still Pass Out Candy? Sure – just do it safely! The point of the Teal Pumpkin Project® is to make trick-or-treating as inclusive as possible. You can keep the experience safe by keeping your food treats and non-food treats in separate bowls.

If I’m Handing Out Candy And Non-Food Treats, How Do I Determine Which Treat To Give To Each Trick-Or-Treater? You can either ask trick-or-treaters if they have any food allergies, or give every visitor a choice of which treat they’d like: candy or a non-food item. FARE has signs to help you, including one that says “You Pick: Candy or Prize.” Do Kids Really Like Non-Food Treats? They don’t just like them, they love them! Finding a unique treat at your house will be a fun surprise. Glow bracelets, for example, are a great option. They are inexpensive, kids can wear them throughout the night, and parents are appreciative because they help make kids more visible after nightfall. Other non-food items, such as pencils and stickers, can be used at home and at school long after candy has run out or expired.

Indianland Garden Club submitted by Lynn LaBarre

The Club gathered on Tuesday, October 8th for a “Beginning Orchid Class”. Lehigh Township resident, Barbara Schmidt, gave tips to help everyone get started with these beautiful flowers. She has won ribbons for her orchids at the Philadelphia Flower Show and is an accomplished speaker and author. The Club learned that orchids grow very slowly and do not like to have wet roots. They are survivors with some varieties being approximately 112 million years old. They are found in all continents except Antarctica. We should not be intimidated to grow them in our houses. The Club will have a horizontal flower arrangement workshop on November 12th at 7:00 PM. Everyone is encouraged to bring a specimen and/or arrangement to the monthly meetings. Arrangements are judged on 3 different levels-beginner, intermediate and advanced. Come learn some new techniques, share ideas about gardening and make new friends. We will take a few months off and meet again at Hope Lutheran Church in Cherryville on March 10, 2020 at 7:00 PM.

Kamp) My dear friends, Is our Pennsylvania Dutch ‘inheritance’ dying out? That question makes one think. When one thinks about it and looks around him, it would appear to be so. How many people nowadays, especially among our young people can understand or can speak the Dutch? Not very many. In our family there is just one that can speak and read Dutch. That is the ‘Chipmunk.’ My wife and the children only understand a few words. When my brothers and sister and I get together, we are speaking Dutch. We did that ever since we were small. Their children are exactly like mine. They can’t speak it and don’t understand it. Speaking Dutch was all that we had done at home. When I started to go to school, I could only just speak a few words of English. When mom and dad talked about something that was not for those who were still wet behind the ears (the youngsters), they spoke in English. [This is the opposite from my family experience; my parents spoke in Dutch if they didn’t want us kids to know what was going on – until one time I understood where the Christmas

presents were hidden and could not contain myself. That ended that!] The Berks County Dutch Fersammling was again on Easter Monday evening. I have often wondered a lot about those that come out every year, can they speak Dutch or do they understand it? That would be something worthwhile to find out. [The Berks Fersammling continues to this day; this year they had around 500 in attendance.] I also wonder a lot about those folks – do they take their Pennsylvania Dutch ‘inheritance’ to heart or do they just come out for good food? Don’t get me wrong; the fersammling is a good thing as well as also other Dutch events: church services, groundhog lodges and so forth. That way the use of our mother tongue is kept going. Here in our area [Kutztown] are many [Old Order] Mennonites and I thank God for them. Here among those families, Dutch is still spoken. From the little children on up. That does my heart good to hear little children speak in our mother tongue. Our tenant’s children can handle speaking Dutch well even though they are only three or four years old. To hear them reminds me of the time when I was a small boy. Such a thing makes one feel good that our mother tongue is still not dying out. I know the time years ago where one perhaps was ashamed to be Pennsylvania Dutch. One did not need to at that time and one does not need to these days. One can and has a reason to be proud. When one looks back and thinks what our forefathers created, one can be proud that we are Dutch. Our ancestors helped make our land, America, what it is today. And for them, we are thankful. Yes, we have a good inheritance. It’s an inheritance that came through blood, sweat and tears, through hard work and risks. Our ancestors came from the old country so that they could serve God in freedom. It was their belief in God, a belief that was steadfast and deep, that helped them through thick and thin. Many of those that came did not have more than the clothing on their back and what they could carry in their hands. But just look what they left us! Be proud of your inheritance, I am! - The ‘Chipmunk’ Vernon M. Kamp [Vernon M. Kamp (1926 - 2017) of Blandon was born on August 1, 1926, in Kempton, Albany Township and passed away on April 14, 2017. He was married to Mary (nee Collyer) Block Kamp. He was employed for over 36 years by THE PATRIOT, Kutztown, PA retiring February 3, 1989, as the news editor. While news editor he penned a column in Pennsylvania German entitled “Scholla OCTOBER 17, 2019 || townandcountrygazette.com

Aus’m Rosen Dahl,” (Echoes from Rose-Valley). (This article was from that column.) He also served as a member of Kutztown Area School Board from 1971 to 1977, and earlier as a Justice of the Peace in and for Albany Township, Berks County. He is survived by his wife, two children, four stepchildren, seven grandchildren and thirteen stepchildren. He is also survived by a sister and four brothers. Obituary from Mae A. Stump Funeral Home.] [Historical Note: At one point in time, Benjamin Franklin was not very fond of our Dutch ancestors. He complained in an article published in 1751 of their “swarthy complexion” (dark skinned) and that they were the “most ignorant Stupid Sort of their own Nation.” He was also worried that their language and culture would overtake the English language and customs and even thought about moving them around so they would not be in majority in any area. (No gerrymandering in those days!) But Franklin apparently mellowed as he got to know them, for later in life he gave a large grant to a college founded by German Reformed and Lutheran ministers in Lancaster. Because of his gift they named the college after him and in 1853 that college merged with Marshall College to become the current Franklin & Marshall College. So when people of different ethnicities and cultures get to know each other, there can be good outcomes.]

Halloween Safety Tips Source: www.healthychildren.org

Halloween is an exciting time of year for kids. Here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to help ensure they have a safe holiday. All Dressed Up: • Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame. • Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and Trick-or-Treat bags for greater visibility. • Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes. Makeup should be tested ahead of time on a small patch of skin to ensure there are no unpleasant surprises on the big day. • When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant. • If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child's costume, make sure it is not sharp or long. A child

may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips. • Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as “one size fits all,” or “no need to see an eye specialist,” obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss. • Review with children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they ever have an emergency or become lost. Carving a Niche: • Small children should never carve pumpkins. Children can draw a face with markers. Then parents can do the cutting. • Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest. Continued on page 38

Halloween Safety Tips Continued from page 37

• Candlelit pumpkins should be placed on a sturdy table, away from curtains and other flammable objects, and not on a porch or any path where visitors may pass close by. They should never be left unattended. Home Safe Home: • To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove from the porch and front yard anything a child could trip over such as garden hoses, toys, bikes and lawn decorations. • Parents should check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs. • Wet leaves should be swept from sidewalks and steps. • Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater. On the Trick-or-Treat Trail: • A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds. • Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts. • If your older children are going alone, plan and review the route that is acceptable to you. on a specific time when they should return home. • Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat. • Because pedestrian injuries are the most common injuries to children on Halloween, remind trick-or-treaters: • Stay in a group and communicate where they will be going. • Remember reflective tape for costumes and trick-or-treat bags. • Carry a cell phone for quick communication. • Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk. • If no sidewalk is available, walk at the far edge of the roadway facing traffic. • Never cut across yards or use alleys. • Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks (as recognized by local custom). Never cross between parked cars or out of driveways. • Don't assume the right of way. Motorists may have trouble seeing trick-or-treaters. Just because one car stops, doesn't mean others will! • Law enforcement authorities should be notified immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity. Healthy Halloween: • A good meal prior to parties and trick-ortreating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats. • Consider purchasing non-food treats for those who visit your home, such as coloring books or pens and pencils. • Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible adult should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items. • Try to ration treats for the days and weeks following Halloween.

legends in the antiques community. They staged their first show in 1952 and were charted as a nonprofit in 1954. Since that first show in 1952, the ADABC has promoted numerous annual and semiannual antique shows in a variety of venues in the Reading area. Six years ago, in an effort to improve and update it, the show committee moved the event to the Kempton Community Center, choosing an October date that didn’t conflict with any other local shows. This location was carefully selected to better reach the Lehigh Valley, as well as neighboring Pennsylvania counties, along with New Jersey customers. The ONE DAY show hours are from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. on Saturday, October 19th. Food will be available. And, parking is free. Admission is $7 per person, $6 with an ad, show card, or copy of this article.
