From the Publisher’s Desk
Joe Korba
I’m getting married October 4. It’s an exciting feeling when two years of plotting and planning are finally culminating. I can’t wait to see my beautiful bride walk down the church aisle. Jessica and I have been together for the better part of a decade and her saying “yes” to my proposal that August afternoon still makes me feel like the luckiest guy ever. I can’t wait to celebrate our nuptials with friends and family. What I didn’t realize was how much goes into actually planning a wedding and reception. There are the major things of course, like venue, photography, and entertainment, but also so many small details. Luckily, all of the people we’ve been working with have been awesome and do everything they can to put us at ease. Jess has been instrumental in coordinating and planning, because she’s amazing and better than me at logistics (and most things). I’ve been in the supporting role of telling her that everything is going to be okay, that the limo will definitely be on time, that the seating chart is fine, and that no one will drink too much and knock over the cake table at the reception (I hope). In the end, regardless of variables I can’t control, I know it will be a superlative day. We will stand at the altar and formalize a decision that I made a long, long time ago—to spend the rest of my life with Jessica. She’s my closest friend, partner, occasional comic foil, confidant, support system, and absolute love of my life.

Meet the Staff
Foliage hikes, pumpkin picking, apple cider, leaf piles—there are so many things that make fall a fun season. What do you love to do to celebrate autumn? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: I love Halloween-related activities. We always meet up with friends and hit local haunted houses and other spooky events.
for a while, then heading over to Washington Square Park. It’s absolutely beautiful. I also have to go pumpkin picking and do something “haunted” every season.
Danielle Tepper, Editor: A brisk fall Saturday in downtown Manhattan is pretty close to perfection for me. Wearing ankle boots and a cozy sweater, I love stopping for a latte, getting lost in the Strand
Alice Wanamaker, Publishing Assistant: The view and the colors during an afternoon hike at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton are amazing and it is always nice to catch a glimpse of a migrating raptor or two.

Tony Pisco, Art Director: I enjoy the return of fall sports like football and soccer. While watching them on TV can be great, there’s nothing better than going to a Penn State football game at Beaver Stadium. Catherine Stroh, Staff Writer: I love getting outside and enjoying the beautiful weather and scenery at festivals like the PA Ren Faire, Canal Festival, and Celtic Fest. Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager: Autumn is a favorite time of year for me. I love the colors and pumpkin patch visits with my grandchildren.

B&BW Candles
Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice: Fall Favorites
When I hit the mall every October for some new cardigans and ankle boots, I always find myself being inevitably sucked into the aromatic cloud coming out of Bath & Body Works. Their fall candle collection, with names like “Farmstand Apple,” “Sweater Weather,” and “Autumn Sky,” always makes me tear through the store like a crazed lunatic, ripping the lids off of every candle in sight and inhaling like I’m trying to snort the scent of crisp red leaves and fresh-picked pumpkins straight up into my brain.—DT

Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice: Fall Favorites
The Walnutport Canal Towpath has been like a best friend to me— the one that is there through every stage of life. I remember learning to ice skate on the north end, waiting with hundreds of others for dawn to break on opening day of fishing season, discovering an unfortunate poison ivy allergy, and searching for a variety of leaves for my third grade science project. Now as an adult, I still enjoy walking and biking along the towpath; taking in the autumn colors blows my mind every October.—AW

One of my favorite bands, Phish, does an annual fall tour. That usually means two or three shows Oktoberfest somewhere nearby. Tailgating in the parking lot of While the 16-day celebration in the Wells Fargo Center in the chilly fall air while Germany sounds like a grand ol’ time, anticipating some awesome music is the best.—JK I specifically am referring to the Oktoberfest brought to us by local and national breweries, like Samuel Adams, Leinenkugel’s, Yuengling, Blue Moon (Harvest Moon), Beck’s, and Shiner. The heavy and hearty malts provide a warm and deep flavored lager that is perfect for this time of year—and for the love of all things yeast, don’t forget the pretzels!—AW

Pumpkin-Flavored Everything Every year I anticipate the arrival of pumpkin flavoring to hit stores and spice up my usual pumpkinless products. I am one of those people who are asking where the pumpkin stuff is by the end of August.—CS
Leaf Piles I get so jealous when I drive by a leaf pile in someone’s front yard. It’s an instant nostalgia fix. Back in my first home in Middletown, NJ, we had huge beautiful trees and my dad would rake up gigantic piles of crunchy leaves for my dog and I to jump and play in. It’s one of my favorite childhood memories, made all the more bittersweet by the fact that neither of our two houses since then has had any trees bigger than the standard twig you get when you move into a new development.—DT

Breaking
Bad Binge Let me preface this by saying: I binged. I binged hard. I devoured five seasons, all 62 episodes, in precisely 10 days—and that's with a full-time job, mind you. (I Netflix.) I normally write this column on the same day that we put the Gazette to bed—our lovely fall issue that you now hold in your hands closed Monday, September 29, 2014. It just so happens that Sunday, September 29, 2013 was the day that the kingpin of cable dramas, “Breaking Bad,” drew to a final close. Writing about my experience with the show felt particularly poetic that day. For those of you who have not dabbled in Walter White’s descent into the seedy underworld of crystal meth production, beware—I’m not one to hold back on spoilers, especially when there are so many juicy talking points. So if you’ve never watched or are considering maybe someday watching, now’s your chance to avert your eyes—I’m talking directly to fellow fans from this point on. First of all, people use the term “mindblowing” a little too loosely, in my opinion. No. That should only be reserved for when you find yourself staring blankly at a television screen as the credits roll, to the point where you forget to blink, as I did a couple weeks back when “Felina” ended around 1 a.m. on a Monday night. (And I paid for it at work the next day.) I joked on Facebook and Twitter that I had brain matter oozing out my ears, but the description wasn’t too far off. Wowza. I’d been toying with the idea of giving BrBa a shot for months. I take note of what shows consistently win awards, and after the Emmys were once again swept by Vince Gilligan’s brainchild, I figured it was time. (That and the fact that I’ve been hearing about its brilliance nonstop from one Mr. Joseph Korba.) My mother and I sat down on a Saturday night and gave it the pilot test. We then watched three more. After she went to bed, I finished the entire first season. I was hooked. Hooked. Addicted. Overdose. Withdrawal. Any and all vaguely drug-related clichés apply to the viewing of this show; I spent the next 10 days in a bluish haze. The concept is something that really just makes you stop and wonder what any one person is capable of. If you had an opportunity to make
all the money you could ever need or want to spend, would you do it? Would it matter how? What if you knew you had a limited number of days left? Would you be more reckless? More willing to throw caution to the wind and live a little? When do the lines between right and wrong become blurred? It was fascinating to watch this mild-mannered Mr. Rogers type transform before your eyes into a complete sociopath. As for Walt’s literal partner-in-crime, I hate to say it, but as a 20 something female, the ever so endearing and attractive Jesse Pinkman was probably my favorite character and part of the show in general. They could’ve kept him solely as Walt’s comic counterpart, really only there to mess up and provide some cheap laughs (“Cow house?”) but as intriguing as it was to watch Walt spiral down, it was even more satisfying watching Jesse rise up and become the moral anchor. He may not have been doing much with his life before Walt grabbed hold of him, but he finally reached a point where enough was enough and nothing was worth becoming a murderer, not even millions of dollars. My eyes popped when I read on IMDb that Gilligan originally planned to kill Jesse off at the end of season 1. Not simply for shallow reasons, I’m glad they allowed him to live— not just through season 1, but throughout the series. I can’t imagine what it would have looked like without him, mainly because Walt’s treatment and manipulation of Jesse was usually an accurate implication of Walt’s own mindset at any given point. After everything that poor kid went through, I practically laughed/cried with him when he finally escaped the “empire” once and for all. I’ve barely scratched the surface of situations and moments in this show that I’d love to talk about, so I invite all readers who’d rather wear pajamas than deal with people, particularly Breaking Bad fans, to follow me over to our website, www.townandcountrygazette.com, on Thursday, October 9. I’ll post a breakdown of ten of my favorite scenes in lieu of a Thursday Top Ten (seeing as how my co-writer will be on his honeymoon) for a special exclusive Breaking Bad edition of POP. One thing’s for certain; I couldn’t be happier to have finally broken bad!

Community/Charitable involvement of
S t e ck e l
and
S topp S taff
Nearly all attorneys and staff members of Steckel and Stopp are active members in one, if not several charitable and community endeavors or projects. The firm itself has been providing legal representation to a wide variety of community based organizations. The charities include religious organizations, service clubs, cultural, educational and health based institutions. What follows is a sampling of the community outreach of two members of the Steckel and Stopp staff:
Emerald Classic Golf Tournament:
Attorney Keith Strohl helped to organize and operate the 6th Annual Emerald Classic Golf Tournament to benefit the Emerald Fire Company. This year’s event took place on August 23 at Olde Homestead Golf Club and raised approximately $2,300.00 for the volunteer fire company. Attorney Strohl also assists with soliciting donations for prizes and sponsorships and organizes the gift bags for each participant. Steckel and Stopp was also a hole sponsor for the event. This fun event will continue for years to come.
2014 Warrior Dash:
Steckel and Stopp Paralegal, Veronica Mummey, participated in “Warrior Dash” at the Pocono Raceway on Saturday August 23, 2013. The 3.5 mile obstacle course benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Veronica opted to be a St. Jude Warrior and raised $130.00 for St. Jude’s. She would like to thank her family, friends and co-workers at Steckel and Stopp for all of their support as well as her sister, Ingrid Tunche and all of her co-workers at NSI in Rockville Maryland. Veronica is already planning to participate in next year’s Warrior Dash!
Peaceable Kingdom Inc.: Veronica is an avid dog lover and dedicates her time to volunteer at Peaceable Kingdom in Whitehall. Peaceable Kingdom is a non-profit, no kill, animal shelter that provides care and shelter to animals that are lost, injured, or abandoned. Northern Lehigh Education Association Celebrates 150 Years Of Education
Submitted by ALLISON CHRUSCIAL The NLEA helped Slatington celebrate its 150th birthday by participating as a charter for the festivities. Northern Lehigh educators enjoyed walking in the parade alongside their float that depicted an 1864 style classroom. Northern Lehigh teacher Kori Dibilio and students Joshua and Samuel Weaber added a nice touch. In addition, the teachers enjoyed decorating the Diamond Fire Company for the 1864 Ball. It was a pleasure to be a part of the 150th celebration and to show their support and enthusiasm for the community in which they work.

Friends Are Waiting
If you’ve ever experienced emotional devastation at the hands of a beer commercial, chances are it was all Budweiser’s fault. From the Clydesdales’ salute to the city to one of the cutest interspecies friendships ever, the marketing minds behind the “King” of American-style lagers is at it again. They celebrated Global Be(er) Responsible Day by unleashing a video entitled “Friends Are Waiting” that implicated the tragic consequences of drunk driving: “Next time you go out, be sure to make a plan to get home safely. Your friends are counting on you. Enjoy Budweiser responsibly.” The one minute-long clip went live Friday, September 19 and instantaneously went viral, quickly racking up more than 16 million views. Dog owners and lovers, beware—you will require a tissue. Or two. Or five. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. View the video on our website, www.townandcountrygazette.com.

Chiropractic Care • Rehabilitation Facility Massage Therapy • D.O.T. Exams New Patients seen immediately NCC Announces “Aliens, Immigrants, And Other Evildoers” Submitted by CYNTHIA TINTORRI Award-winning performance artist José Torres-Tama will perform at Northampton Community College in his critically acclaimed one-man show, “Aliens, Immigrants and Other Evildoers” satirizing the status of immigrants as “extraterrestrials.” Using multimedia, TorresTama challenges our thoughts about the system that sometimes vilifies these individuals while relying on their labor. The public is invited to a reception with José Torres-Tama, followed by his performance, on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. in Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall, on NCC’s Main Campus at 3835 Green Pond Road in Bethlehem. Admission is free, but donations to the Hispanic Caucus Dreamers Scholarship are welcome. Food sales during the reception will benefit the scholarship. Since 1995, Jose Torres-Tama has been touring across the country with solo shows that feature a fusion of spoken word prose, bilingual poetry, rituals of fire, symbolic movement, and exaggerated personae, creating spectacles that are visually dynamic and politically charged. As an arts educator, he is dedicated to working in
minority communities with Latino and African American teens through his Youth Performance Projects that introduce performance art and poetry as a means of self-empowerment. Torres-Tama will be at NCC as artist-inresidence, in collaboration with Lafayette College. He will visit creative writing and history classes and hold workshops for theatre students at NCC’s Main and Monroe Campuses and at Lafayette College throughout the week of Sept. 22. For more information, contact NCC Theatre at 610-861-5524.

Last Chance To Be Part Of History
Submitted by ROBERT STETTNER The Slatington 150 History Committee is nearing the end of its portion of the work on the upcoming history book Slatington At 150: More Stories To Share. The committee’s task of researching, writing, and editing articles is nearly finished as material is beginning to go to the printer. The committee invites anyone interested in becoming a patron sponsor or page sponsor to act now. For $5, individuals can have their names listed on the patron page. A special invitation is extended to organizations and churches whose histories will be included in the book to consider sponsoring pages on behalf of their organization. The cost of page sponsorships is $25 per page. In addition, members of families whose family histories are appearing in the book are invited to sponsor their family’s pages as well. If you wish to become a patron sponsor, simply send a check for $5 made payable to the Slatington 150 Committee, P.O. Box 151, Slatington, PA 18080. On a piece of paper, please indicate the name(s) as you would like them listed. Those wishing to sponsor pages are asked to visit the Slatington Library, Galio’s Market, or our Facebook page (Slatington 150 History Committee) and fill out a page sponsorship form. Return the form along with a check to the address above. Oct. 15 is the absolute deadline to become a part of history and have your name listed as a patron or page sponsor in the history book. For more information, contact Robert at 610-554-4099 or message us on Facebook. The Slatington 150 History Committee thanks everyone for their cooperation.

I urge you to read God’s Word to get the faith to be saved by hearing about Jesus the Savior of the world. Start with the Gospel of John.

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
Tigers Tearing up Colonial League Two years ago, Josh Snyder held the blueprint to rebuild the Northwestern Lehigh football program. Today, the three-year head coach can stand back and watch what he has built. “We had a plan and I had a plan as far as what we could do with the program,” Snyder said.
“What I wanted to do was surround myself with the best coaching staff around. We all are young; except for Scott Hippensteel, we are in our 30s or younger. We pride ourselves on relating with our players.” He continued, “We just have enjoyed our three years since I have taken over. I think the kids want to genuinely play hard for us.” So far in 2014, the Tigers have done just that for Snyder and his staff as Northwestern is off to a tremendous 4-0 start and are at the top of the Colonial League standings. Despite the unblemished record, Snyder believes work is still to be done in New Tripoli. “It’s a work in progress, really,” he said. “I guess when you are 4-0, you are pretty happy regardless. We are right where we need to be, but from a coaching standpoint we can see individual improvement week to week. All we can ask for is improvement and everyone having fun. I think we are where we need to be, but need to keep working.” One individual who has been laboring this season is lineman Matthew Shields. The junior, according to Snyder, is a first-year starter and had a lot of potential coming in to this season and has shown it through the first four contests of the year.

The word “contests” is used loosely when referring to the first four games Northwestern has played. The Tigers average 40 points per game offensively, with their lowest total being 32 in their season opener where they defeated Notre Dame Green Pond 32-6. The defense has been holding up its end as well, allowing an average of four points per game and pitching a shutout against Bangor in week two. Also, the special teams unit has contributed as well blocking five punts in the first four games. Snyder believes more can be done though. “We left too many plays on the field,” he admitted. “While we are moving the ball on offense, people crowd the box and we missed some explosive plays down the sidelines. Against really good teams, we need to capitalize on every opportunity given. I’m pretty comfortable though with where we are at and how the guys are playing.” Northwestern’s first test of the season was against the only other undefeated team in the CL, Saucon Valley. The Tigers have some other tough match-ups on the horizon with a meeting in Palmerton on Oct. 17 with a Bombers squad on the upswing as well as Northern Lehigh on Oct. 24 who is 3-1 so far this season. October 3, 1963 This is the time of the year when one must think about gathering in [items]. How many of you still dry tea leaves to use over winter. One type of tea that we always gathered at home was the blue balsam [peppermint] tea and we dried it to use over winter. Then when it about at this time [season], we also went to the Blue Mountain for herb tea plants [specifically, in this case, goldenrod plants] or Blue Mountain tea, which was its correct name. Just last week we heard a man say, “I was up near Frackville at the Blue Mountain last Saturday picking goldenrod.” Then this was always dried; but only the leaves were used. They were stripped from the stem and dried. My, this was the tea, which we always made for dunking the Fastnacht doughnuts. The turnip-gathering also comes soon. We always put ground in the hearth in the cellar and placed a layer of turnips on it. The turnips

rooted themselves fast and did not spoil for the whole winter. Some people also buried them in a hole in the ground. Still others stored them in the ground cellar. The old ground cellar was also handy for storing apples, pumpkins, turnips and similar items. Nothing froze in the ground cellar the entire winter. It was cool in summer and warm in winter in there [compared to outside air temperatures.] So one put items in there to keep them cool in summer and put other items in there to keep them from freezing in the winter. Many people also buried cabbage in a 422 holeW. Fra in the ground in fall for use over the winter. … Today garrets are used to store full boxes of Continued on Page 54

items and many homes don’t even have a garret anymore. Years ago they used the garret to dry things. When one looked overhead in the garret it was full of items hanging on nails on the rafters. Someone who lived near Bath told us she still dried many pears, peaches and like fruit on a string on the garret. In winter the children would go up and fetch a piece for themselves and eat it while watching TV. Isn’t that much better than so much candy and bubble gum? We don’t want to completely forget this whole drying process. [Florence mentions two herbal teas which her family used. The blue balsam tea (the tea
plants can be grown in one’s garden) was also called blue mint tea and is described as having a very strong peppermint aroma and flavor. The leaves can also be used as a spice when cooking. The Blue Mountain tea is from the common goldenrod, also known as the anise-scented sweet goldenrod (Solidage odora). There are several different species of the goldenrod; apparently the sweet goldenrod, which is the one whose leaves are used in making tea, was found along the Blue Mountain in her area. Perhaps some reader is aware of the presence of this goldenrod species in our area. Please let us know.] -Larry Gradwohl

I was a little hesitant to try these at first, but don't worry, they are as delicious as they are healthy. I usually double the recipe right away because it really does not make much. I like to stick to cheddar for the cheese and am very generous with the amount I put in—is there such a thing as too much cheese? I would highly suggest putting a slice of the quiche and a slice of cheese on an english muffin to enjoy. They make amazing breakfast sandwiches. Good luck and enjoy!
