Free introduction to Square dancing The Lehigh Valley B&B Square & Round Dance Club is hosting a free introduction to square dancing It will be held at Lehigh Valley Active Life, 1633 W. Elm Street on Sunday October 13th from 6 to 8pm. So many people say, "Oh I did that in elementary school", however this is so much more. Also once you learn all of the calls, you can dance anywhere in the world because square dance calls are always done in English. Many of our members have traveled throughout the United States square dancing and in 2013 one couple even took a trip to England during which they square danced with 3 different square dance clubs. It is a great way to exercise both your mind and your body! So come try it out! The first session is free! For more information contact Jeff at 610-544-9403

12 Simple Steps to Get Your Home Ready for Fall You may be ready for fall, but is your house prepared? These tips will help you get your home ready for the wetter autumn weather in style —and may save you some money too! Learn what projects will ensure your house makes a smooth transition from summer to fall. 1) Reprogram the Thermostat Change your temperature settings to make your home ready for the colder weather. Make sure the house is warm when people are active (mornings and evenings). But don’t be afraid to lower the temperature by several degrees or more when the family is away or sleeping. Even smart programmable thermostats may need some help figuring out your winter schedule! 2) Clean Your Furnace and Switch Out Your Filters Check your furnace for soot, ignition problems, pilot light health and the state of other components to make your home ready for fall. Also, clean up dust and grime and arrange a professional inspection for anything that worries you. This is

also a great time to switch out your filters, since clean air is important when the house is closed for winter. You may also need to winterize your outdoor air conditioner unit, depending on the type of system you have. This usually involves cleaning your coils and covering the unit to protect it from the elements. 3) Look for Gaps and Cracks in Your Insulation Make your home fall ready and fix insulation issues before the cold weather arrives. Take a trip up to your attic/crawlspace during the day and look for rays of light in the corners. The only light should be coming from your attic vents and corners should be well-protected with insulation. And do the same thing with your ductwork. Have a partner shine a light in your vents and see if it shows any cracks while you watch from the crawlspace. Those cracks will cost you warm air! 4) Clean, Inspect and Prepare Your Fireplace Is your fireplace and home ready for these colder months? Be sure to clean out your fireplace, check

your chimney for blockages and make sure that your damper is working smoothly. If your chimney is coated in soot or forming tarry creosote residue, you will need to clean the chimney thoroughly to prevent fire hazards. For gas fireplaces, vacuum out any dust and check that the pilot light is properly turned on. 5) Switch to Warmer Bedding and Clothes Bring out your seasonal bedding and clothing and pack up your summer wear for next season. Remember to keep your clothing somewhere safe from outdoor pests and extreme temperatures. It’s a good idea to do this early so you have a chance to wash and freshen winter items before using them.
home. This is also a good time to check your window weatherstripping to make sure the felt is intact and not letting any drafts through. 9) Bring in Delicate Plants Potted plants that are sensitive to moisture and low temperatures need protection. Consider bringing them in for the winter and keeping them in the kitchen, laundry room, or a space with plenty of natural light. Clean the plants and their pots thoroughly before bringing them inside to get your home ready for fall. Remember that the move will Continued on page 8
6) Prepare Your Outdoor Furniture Wash your outdoor furniture and bring in any sensitive cushions or fabrics to get your home ready for fall. This is true even for durable outdoor padding, as it can develop mold issues over wet seasons. If you get a lot of snow, consider storing chairs and tables in a shed for better protection. Remember, mosaic tables can be particularly vulnerable to freezing temperatures. 7) Insulate Pipes to get Your Home Ready for the Cold When temperatures drop below freezing, standing water in your pipes can start to freeze. This can ruin valves and even crack brittle pipes, leading to leaks and water damage. If your pipes aren’t protected or you have installed new plumbing, you can get your home ready for the cold by insulating your pipes. This can be done with simple foam sleeves. 8) Inspect Your Screens and Windows Fall is the perfect time to throw open windows and let fresh, cool air inside before the days get too chilly. But you should check your screens first to make sure they are aren’t warped or bent. Large spaces encourage curious insects to enter your

11) Check on Your Water Heater Your water heater has a lot of work to do in fall and winter. Over time, water heaters can get loaded down with sediment, overcome with scale, or other problems that reduce efficiency and lead to problems. If you haven’t paid much attention to your water heater, it may be time to clean it out for the coming months to make your home ready for the cold. 12) Prepare Your Entryway for Muddy Feet Is your entryway and home ready to deal with the dirt and moisture that fall and winter bring? Make sure there are places to store dirty clothes or equipment and ways to take care of muddy shoes or boots. Keep that dirt away from your floors by making sure it never enters the house.

Budget-Friendly Fall Activities for the Whole Family Source: www.everydollar.com
Autumn has arrived, and it’s brought cooler temperatures and changing leaves along with it. It’s the perfect time to be outside—which means there are a lot of free activities everywhere you look! If you’re working toward a big money goal or hoping to get a head start on Christmas savings, now is the perfect time to take advantage of all the budget-friendly fall activities. To give you some ideas, we’ve created an EveryDollar fall bucket list. How many of these activities can you and your family cross off before winter? Budget-Friendly Fall Activities 1. Go on a nature hike. Make a game out of your family nature hike by making a bingo sheet. Include things like acorns, orange leaves and fuzzy squirrels. Whoever gets bingo first wins! 2. Have a picnic. The weather is perfect. Why not enjoy it with a nice picnic lunch at a local park? You can make it even better if you pack a couple of autumn treats, like apple cider!
3. Go pick pumpkins. It’s that time of year. Prepare your heart and head out to the pumpkin patch. Just make sure you budget for all the cute gourds you want to bring home with you! 4. Visit an apple orchard. This is an autumn classic. If you live near an apple orchard, make a day of it. Some places sell you bushels of apples, while others even let you pick your own. 5. Carve jack-o’-lanterns. Once you’ve visited the pumpkin patch, make a family date of picking out patterns and (carefully) carving them onto your pumpkins. Don’t forget to budget for the candles! 6. Check out local festivals. You can find local festivals just about anywhere at this time of year! Check out what events are happening in your city and prepare for a day of fall fun! 7. Visit a corn maze. Another must-have bucket list item, visiting a corn maze is one of the best parts of fall. If you’re a competitive family, time each other to see who can make it out the fastest! 8. Go to a football game. It’s that time of year. Slip on your boots, throw on a scarf, and head out to a local football game. Whether you go to a high

A great place to Christmas shopping News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || OCTOBER 3, 2019 start your
school, college or professional game, you’re bound to have a blast. 9. Make apple cobbler. Nothing says fall like the smell of fresh apple cobbler in the oven. It’ll smell even better if you use the apples you bought (or picked) from your trip to the apple orchard. 10. Make popcorn on the stove. Sure, you can make popcorn on the stove no matter what month it is. But there’s something extra special about this cozy tradition in the fall. And it tastes good, too! 11. Roast pumpkin seeds. Make the most of your pumpkins by scooping out the seeds when you’re carving jack-o’-lanterns. Toss them in the oven with a drizzle of oil and salt, and you’ll have a delicious snack! 12. Visit a haunted house. If you’re into spooky Halloween traditions, this should be at the top of your list. Just make sure you know what to expect before taking the kiddos with you! 13. Roast marshmallows. There’s just something about this time of year that makes roasting marshmallows an absolute must. Bonus points if you make s’mores. 14. Drink hot chocolate. Autumn isn’t complete unless you enjoy a few mugs of hot chocolate on crisp fall nights. Or, if you aren’t a fan of chocolate, swap it out for a hearty cup of spiced apple cider.
Yum! 15. Go for a Sunday drive. Leisurely Sunday drives are always in style, but they’re even better in the fall. Grab a blanket for the drive and hit the road to admire all the leaves changing colors.

Northampton Area Konkrete Kids Educational Foundation Awards 18 Grants Totaling $46,671 for 2019-2020 School Year Projects At a Grant Award Recognition Program and Reception held on Monday, September 23, at Northampton Area High School, the Northampton Area Konkrete Kids Educational Foundation awarded 18 education grants totaling $46,671 for the 2019-2020 school year. The grants represent funding for a wide variety of grant requests submitted to the Foundation by Northampton Area School District staff members for projects that will extend learning opportunities and cocurricular experiences for the benefit of the entire K-12 school community. With the awarding of these grants, the Foundation has given over $212,281 to the District since its inception in 2009. At the Recognition Program Bill Conner, Foundation president, welcomed the guests who
included the grant recipients, NASD School Board members, building and school district administrators, and members of the Foundation Board. He explained that the Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit, tax-exempt community organization dedicated to raising monies that “support and finance innovative programs designed to enhance the quality of education for Northampton Area School District students”. Over the past ten years funding for the education grants was made possible by the support of local businesses, community members, and individuals for the Foundation’s various fundraising events, such as the annual Golf Tournament, Oldies Dances, memorial paver sales, and the Distinguished Alumni Wall of Honor Celebration.

Penn State Extension is pleased to announce the success of its unique 2019 Entrepreneurship Internship. Entrepreneurship Interns are funded through a generous donation from Earl and Kay Harbaugh, with matching funds from the Energy, Business and Community Vitality Penn State Extension Team. Through the internship, Mindy Beam of Elverson, PA, who is a current Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences student, was assigned to work with Pure American Naturals (PAN), Millerstown, PA. PAN raises Angora goats to use their mohair to make value-added fiber products such as socks, hats, and other fashionable items. The internship was focused on strategic planning, value chain immersion, and marketing. After making initial relationships with the PAN farm crew, visits/tours were done with various Pennsylvanian businesses in the current mohair product supply chain, which helped to understand the “farm to fashion” story. From there, market research was conducted, assessed, and analyzed to reveal methods and show potential of different opportunities. Market research was even accompanied by attending a Première Vision fashion conference in New York, NY. Research ultimately lead to recommendations to assist PAN in connecting to new markets and sharing their story. An official market research report, recommendation and resource list, and social media and web design presentation was completed by Beam and presented to the Pure American Naturals farm group to utilize and work towards improved business and increased sales for the future.

Neffs National Bank Says Goodbye to longTime community banker Submitted by Amanda Clauser
The Neffs National Bank announces the retirement of Ronald Gildner. After 45 years of service, the Vice President of Retail Lending is hanging up his suit and tie in an effort to spend more time with his family and the community. Gildner started as a bank teller in July 1974 and rose to Security Officer and Vice President of Retail Lending. Over the years, Gildner has helped generations of local families meet their financial needs. Gildner also has spent much of his life in service to the community, from being a volunteer firefighter and Assistant Fire Chief with Neffs Volunteer Fire Company, to being a scout leader for his 3 sons Andrew, Alex and Aaron. The Neffs National Bank President/CEO Kevin Schmidt reflected on Gildner’s 45 years in service to the bank, noting his commitment to the organization and community defines Gildner as a quintessential community banker and leader. Gildner resides in Slatington with this wife Kathleen.

Slatington High School Class of 1949 At top, the invitation quoted Lord Byron: “Fare thee well, and if for ever still for ever fare thee well.” At bottom, it said “One last time.” The invitation was mailed to the surviving members of the class of 1949 who graduated from Slatington High School. Nicknamed the 49'ers, they held their 70th reunion on Saturday, September 21, in - where else? - Slatington. “Join us to celebrate 70 years... at our last formal reunion! Another reunion will not be planned. In 1949, 111 high schoolers graduated from Slatington High School. Today 46 are known to still be living. Of those, 20 attended the “last” reunion. The committee that planned yearly reunions included Wally Smith, Eleanor Petrich, Margaret Blose, Gloria Martin, and Nancy Roberts. They decided to take over in 2012 when the class officers stopped organizing reunions. They included President Paul Krause, Vice President Jane Kressley, Secretary Winifred Strauss, and Treasurer Loretta Yenser. “Arrive as early as 11 a.m. to visit with your classmates one last official time.”In 1949 all students in the graduating class did not live in Slatington or even the immediate area. They were children from “the country.”
B asket s ocial
About 20 students who graduated in 1949 were from the countryside. They arrived in Slatington daily from Wanamakers, Lynnport, New Tripoli, and Germansville. By 1949, the students arrived at school by bus, but this was only after the “Berksy,” the train on which they had ridden to school into their sophomore year, stopped running from their homes in the outlying areas to the small town of Slatington. The Berksy ran from Reading to Slatington, picking up the school children along the way. In the years that they rode the train, they arrived late to school every day. According to its schedule, the train did not arrive until after the school bell rang. It deposited the students at the train station, they than walked from the station, climbing a tall hill to finally arrive at the school building. Eleanor Petrich, then Eleanor Hartman, remembers riding the Berksy daily from Lynnport with her twin brother Howard.

Sayer Autumn Now autumn is at the door, with golden and red leaves. Everything in the field and woods is pretty, we have very beautiful fine weather. 28
But soon things will change here, the wind will become cold, oh, me! Stretch oneself according to your covers, The world is now white with snow. Pheasants fly over the field, They cackle so merrily, Dressed up in beautiful feathers with every sort of color. The rabbits hop around the trees, they are eating the apples, They don’t know that a hunter comes, since last year they forgot that. Their sisters and brothers were often chased and shot; The dogs chased them around, they did not let them rest. Pheasants they also hunted, so many one can’t keep count; In the morning they killed them, and in the evening the people ate them. Touch of Dutch Continued from page 28
And now everything is dried up it makes chickens’ and horses’ ‘food.’ The squirrels run on the trees, they must soon hurry To gather nuts before the winter, then they have nothing to complain. The cats look for a mouse in the garden by the dahlia; I call them often, they don’t hear, they don’t come to the house. But when the wind blows right cold once, the snow deep at the barn, Then they are glad to come in the house, to sit by me at the fire. The skunks are also walking around here, they stink like something dead; Yet they make for a woman such a beautiful winter coat. My dog barks, he jumps around here, It appears he is dancing, Winter comes, he wants to come in to me, is confused and his tail hangs [down]. The groundhogs, that were so industrious, hide themselves in their holes; They stay in and do not eat, they always become weaker; But when February comes, and they don’t see their shadow, Then spring soon comes, we had our winter. When everything is cold and depressing, and the flowers are dormant, The sweet grapes are picked and we have a barrel of wine. One thinks he could not stand it any longer, Until the winter is gone; Yet we have hope for ourselves that we will soon see spring. So it goes in the world, my friend, the nights are black and dark, Everything is so confusing and wrong, one sees no bright spark! But the morning sun always comes with hope, honest and fresh; I will make my fire, wash my face, and sit down at the table.
good coffee and my piece of bread; We are blessed, have many good things and hope is not dead. When winter comes, cold and snowy, I’ll wade through it with boots; And I know Spring will come; our God is in his heaven! [I could not find any biographical information on Mabel G. Sayer. I only know this poem was published in Volume XLVIII of the Pennsylvania German Society in 1940.]

COOKING CORNER PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE BARS
The BEST pumpkin cheesecake bars — a scrumptious cinnamon graham saltine outside layer with two layers of cheesecake beat with a simple streusel and caramel sauce. These popular pumpkin cheesecake bars are certain to be a raving success wherever you serve them! This pumpkin cheesecake formula was initially made in 2014 and from that point forward several individuals have made and cherished this formula! It's been astonishing to peruse the surveys and hear exactly the amount of a hit this pumpkin cheesecake has been. A standout amongst the most messaged in inquiries and solicitations I get is to make it BIGGER. While the 9 x 9-inch dish is scrumptious, we've heard boisterous and clear you need a 9 x 13-inch container of these mind blowing pumpkin cheesecake bars. However, don't stress, the cherished 9 x 9-inch skillet hand crafted pumpkin cheesecake formula has not been changed — it's as yet the equivalent for those of you that have delighted in the littler dish estimate. INGREDIENTS : Crust • 12 full sheets cinnamon graham cracker crumbs • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar • 1/2 cup (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted Cheesecake • 4 packages (8 ounces each) full fat cream cheese, at room temperature • 1 and 1/2 cups white sugar • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 4 large eggs • 1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
Streusel and Topping • 1 cup dark brown sugar, packed • 1 cup white flour • 1/2 cup quick cooking oats • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (not melted) • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • Salted or plain caramel to top bars with INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 9 x 13 baking pan with parchment paper (leave an overhang to be able to pull out these bars easily) and set aside. 2. In a bowl, combine the crust ingredients and mix until a thick dough forms. Press evenly into the bottom of the prepared 9 x 13 pan. Bake for 8 minutes, remove, allow to cool. 3. In another bowl, combine the cream cheese, (VERY important it is at room temperature for a smooth texture. Leave out for at least an hour before baking) sugar, salt, and vanilla. Beat with hand mixers until completely smooth and creamy. Add in the eggs, one at a time, and beat until each is combined. 4. Remove half of this mixture and pour on top of the prepared crust. 5. Add the canned pumpkin, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice to the remaining cheesecake mixture and stir until completely combined. 6. Careful not to combine the two layers, pour the pumpkin layer on top of the plain cheesecake layer. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees F.

The program’s theme will be “Scary Animals.” Some animals, like spiders and bats, carry frightening connotations for many people that have embedded themselves into popular culture. The program seeks to hopefully break down these fears to show how cool and beneficial these animals are to our ecosystems. The program is free. Participants must wear sturdy shoes and are encouraged to bring a flashlight or headlamp. Remember When
Fritzinger Baking Company a.k.a. Fritzinger’s Bakery was founded by James Fritzinger when he purchased Paul Lentz’s bakery in 1902. A horse drawn delivery wagon with the name J. Fritzinger Bakery could be seen delivering baked goods in the community. In January 1910 a second story was added to the bakery in order to make room for modern machinery. In early 1915 a Peerless moulding machine and a Thompson loaf moulding machine were installed in the bakery. In later years the bakery was operated by his son, Fred and later by Fred’s son. James – or “Chick” as he was known – and eventually by his son, John, the fourth generation. The bakery was known for their quality tasting baked goods. The aroma of hard crust rye bread, sticky buns, potato buns, shoo-fly pies, cream puffs, and molasses cookies spreading through the community on a Sunday evening when baking began for the week, is a pleasant memory for many people. Fritzinger’s baked goods were delivered throughout the Lehigh Valley. Over the years Howard W. Schneck (1904), Roy Queen, Charlie Spadt, Marvin Spadt, Sammy Minnich (who was a considered a “bobtailer” because he not only sold Fritzinger’s bakery products, but baked goods from other area bakers as well), Pete Heffelfinger, Perry Minnich (also a bobtailer), Warren Kemp, and “Hipper” Williams, Harry Kistler, Earl Evert Jr., Robert Kern and Ulysses Hollenbach had routes that delivered, not only door-to-door, but to stores, schools, and bars. Some of the men who worked in the bakery over the years included Doc Litzenberger, Frank Williams, Francis Kern, Bill Ifkovich, Allen Minnich, Howard Rowe, Alfred Dorward, Austin Messenger and LeRoy Musselman. The bakery was in operation until 1977. 44

College’s SEED Program Receives $15,000 Grant from The Provident Bank Foundation submitted by Denise M. Reifinger
The Lehigh Carbon Community College Foundation has received a $15,000 grant from The Provident Bank Foundation to support the Success, Engagement, Education and Determination (SEED) Program Scholarships for Students with Disabilities. The SEED program was selected to receive the grant based on its impact on students and its unique mission to support students who need extra services transitioning from high school to college. SEED offers intensive coaching, peer support networks, and person-centered planning that increase capacity for success. SEED helps students overcome challenges such as anxiety, social awkwardness, high frustration levels, lack of organization and self-management issues, that if unaddressed can derail the best efforts to succeed as a college student. The college received the check during a presentation on Sept. 18 at the college’s Schnecksville campus. Funds from the grant will make the program more accessible to students from low to moderate income levels, specifically graduates of the Allentown School District. The goal is to ensure that all students
with disabilities have the same chance to maximize their potential as college students and as future workers, regardless of their ability to pay-out-ofpocket. SEED students receive comprehensive intentional services in addition to taking academic classes. Scholarship awards are for $1,000, $2,000 and $3,000, depending on the student’s program track, impacting between six and 10 individuals. Continued on page 46

“The college’s SEED program is truly that – a seed that plants the values of access and inclusion into our programs for students,” says LCCC president Dr. Ann Bieber. SEED began in 2014 as a grant from the Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council. After the grant ended in 2016, LCCC established a student fee structure to cover program costs. “The Provident Bank Foundation is honored to help further initiatives that are making a difference in the lives of residents in our local area,” said Jane Kurek, executive director, The Provident Bank Foundation. The goal of the major grant is to support organizations that have identified an immediate need in the community and for the individuals they serve. The Provident Bank Foundation’s funding directly supports efforts to enhance the quality of life in the New Jersey and Pennsylvania communities served by Provident Bank through three funding priority areas: community enrichment, education, and health, youth and families. For more information on the SEED program, contact Michelle Mitchell, learning specialist and professor, at mmitchell@ lccc.edu or go to www.LCCC.edu/SEED.
