7-Day Restart Guide: How to Get Your Diet Back on Track in One Week Source: www.livestrong.com
You researched for hours to find the healthiest — and most delish — recipes. You filled up your shopping cart and scheduled delivery. You stocked your fridge with sparkling waters, just in case your sugar cravings hit hard. And then… you slipped off the bandwagon. The veggies went bad — and your hankering for French fries won over your voice of reason. First and foremost, don't beat yourself up. We've all been there. Secondly, keep things in perspective: With just a few small tweaks, you can get your healthy eating back on track and your goals back in sight. Where to start? Rather than go too far in the other direction, set up a small daily goal for seven consecutive days, suggests Anne L'Heureux, RD, LD, registered dietitian for Spartan. That's long enough to start forming new, healthy habits again and to give yourself small opportunities to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. "It's often those feelings — not the actions themselves — that keep people focused," she says.
Ready to get your diet back on the right track? Here's your one-week plan. Day 1: Drink More Water If you woke up this morning feeling exhausted, you may be tempted to reach for a sugary, caffeinated beverage. But fatigue can be a symptom of dehydration, L'Heureux explains, so make your day-one goal an easy one: Drink some good oldfashioned H2O. Continued on page 6

In fact, every time you get the urge to stop by your local cafe or visit the lunchroom vending machine, try sipping on water or seltzer instead. The benefit here is threefold: "You will help keep the body hydrated, decrease feelings of fatigue and save on unnecessary calories," L'Heureux explains. So, how much water are we talking? To calculate how much you need, L'Heureux says, divide your body weight by two — that's the number of ounces
you should consume every day. If that seems daunting, remember that you can also reap hydration from water-heavy veggies like bok choy, radish, cucumber, zucchini and watercress, to name a few. Day 2: Double Up on Fruits and Veggies When you're attempting to make smarter, more fruitful dietary choices, it can all feel a little overwhelming. L'Heureux says many people get caught up in the nitty-gritty of what they can't eat, instead of focusing on the creative ways they can improve their diet. When you do the former, she notes, you're more likely to get tired of repetitive

dishes — and more likely to give into your cravings. To combat this, your goal for day two is an easy one: Double up on your intake of nature's candy. "Start simply by adding one additional fruit and vegetable option into your day," L'Heureux says. "Upgrade that simple bowl of cereal by topping it with blueberries. Already putting fruit in your smoothie? Add a handful of spinach, too. Looking for a snack to tide you over until dinner? Baby carrots are refreshing and sweet." Day 3: Slow It Down On day three, try pumping the brakes when it comes to mealtime, suggests Samantha Cassetty, director of nutrition for The Healthy Mommy, which offers weight-loss plans for moms. Here's the deal: When you're overly distracted while you're eating (or taking your meal on-the-go, like many of us), it's more difficult to feel fully satisfied with what you're eating. "You'll get more enjoyment out of meals and possibly feel fuller longer if you slow down while you eat," she says. "Since it takes your brain 20 minutes to arrive at the table, make sure your meal lasts at least that long." If you find yourself zipping through a nosh session, Cassetty suggests putting your utensils Continued on page 8

down between bites and mentally describing what your food tastes like, using adjectives like savory, crunchy and silky. Day 4: Get Real About Your Hunger Or in other words: Assess how hungry and full you really are. To keep your diet on track for all seven days — and long after — Cassetty says it's essential to learn how to listen to your body and think critically about whether or not it needs food. "We're born to do this, but we learn to override these signals," she explains. "Start to identify what it feels like to be Fully Insured Quality Work at Reasonable Rates FREE ESTIMATES (610) 767-7119 or 703-3848, cell

hungry so you can respond appropriately, and also begin to notice what it feels like when you're satisfied." When you get really in tune with these cues, she says, you might find that you don't need to finish everything on your plate (bonus: leftovers!). Day 5: Rethink Your Snacks Not-so-surprising fact: Cassetty says the vast majority of Americans snack several times throughout the day, yet they aren't meeting their fruit and veggie targets. By definition, this inbetween nibble is meant to tide you over between meals — but it shouldn't be void of all nutrition (looking at you, caramel latte). So, your day-five challenge? Swap any emptycalorie snacks for those that are more nutrientdense (think: protein, veggies, fruits). This means you'll have to bid adieu to your favorite packaged bars or chips and be a little more mindful about what you're putting in your mouth. Not only will you likely be cutting out calories, but you could see an uptick in your mood, too. Increased produce portions were linked with higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction in a study published August 2016 in the American Journal of Public Health. "Try pairing your produce with some protein or lean fat, both of which add flavor and help you stay

Lehigh Township Historical Society News Submitted by Ruth Hall Kent
Our spring and summer season at the Historical Society is nearing the end. Our last Historical Centre museum Sunday Open House was just held. We will continue to be open on Tuesday mornings from 9 am to Noon throughout the fall and winter during our work sessions for anyone wishing to visit. September 14th is the date that our annual Fall Mums will be decorating the porch of our Historical Centre from 9 am to 4 pm. See our ad in this issue. The museum will be open during that time for those wishing to stop in and take a trip down memory lane. Mark your calendar for Saturday October 12th for our Cemetery Talk and Walk, including a very interesting presentation about Pennsylvania German Gravestones to be held at St. Paul's UCC in Indianland at 11 am. Light refreshments will be served. Following the program, we will take a walk through the St. Paul's Cemetery behind the church to view the old grave markers. Our speaker is Mr. Michael Emery from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission. He is currently the site administrator for the Cornwall Iron Furnace and has worked for 21 years with PHMC. He has studied PA German decorative arts and architecture for

over 23 years. In addition to this program, the St. Paul's One-Room Schoolhouse will be open from 10-11 am and Noon to 2 pm for visitors wishing to see a restored one room school built in 1865. The school tour and program are free and open to the public. One more event that the Historical Society will be participating in is the 32nd Annual Lehigh Township Benefit Festival & Car Show. Come visit our booth on the porch of the refreshment stand. We will have various items and books on display. Stop by and visit! We are always looking for items to add to our collection. Please check with us before throwing old things out in the trash, they might find a new home in the museum. If you have spare time and are interested in Lehigh Township history and preserving the past, please consider joining our Volunteer Team. We have a work session every Tuesday morning from 9 am to Noon during which we process incoming items, do filing, cleaning, maintenance and other odds and ends. If you can give us a few hours each week it will be time well spent! Please give us a call at 610-440-0151 or just stop in on a Tuesday morning ready to help! We hope to see you soon!

Can Too Much Sugar Keep Me Awake? Source: www.livestrong.com
It's long been thought that people -- especially kids -- who can't settle down for a good night's rest need to lay off the sugar. However, there's not much medical evidence to back up that line of thinking. A number of behaviors contribute to insomnia, one of which is your eating and drinking habits before bed; however, sugar is not the substance most likely to keep you awake at night.

Hyperactivity Although many people think that sugar overload leads to hyperactivity, especially in children, actual evidence proving this is somewhat scant. Refined sugars do produce rapid fluctuations in your bloodglucose levels, which could cause an adrenaline rush that would make it difficult to fall asleep; however, hyperactivity has not been definitively linked to sugar, sugar substitutes or food colorings, as many parents claim. Caffeine Many beverages that contain sugar -- such as sodas, coffee drinks, energy drinks and hot chocolate -- also contain caffeine, a known stimulant. If you consume any of these beverages in the evening, the caffeine may be what's keeping you awake, not the sugar. Insomnia Causes Overeating late in the evening could cause insomnia, regardless of the food's content; when you don't give your body a chance to digest before lying down, an uncomfortable feeling and/or heartburn can result. Nicotine and alcohol use can also cause sleep problems. If your insomnia is chronic, it may be due to stress, depression,

medications, certain medical conditions, poor sleep habits, or environmental or schedule changes. Addressing these underlying problems usually results in better sleep patterns. Solution/Prevention Treating an underlying condition can help reduce insomnia, and prescription or over-the-counter sleep aids are available for severe cases. Behavior therapy, such as stimulus control and relaxation
techniques, can also help in some cases. You can also change your behaviors on your own; for example, eat dinner several hours before going to bed and avoid alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and large beverages late in the evening. If you think sugary foods are keeping you awake, try to limit them in the later part of the day as well; everyone's body works a little differently, and cutting back on sugar might just do the trick for you.

Making Learning FUN by Christine S Allen, president Reading Escapades & Math Explorers, Inc
With the school year starting, I’m sure more than of few of you have had to deal with tears and frustrations. Many people think that school is a punishment, not something that is wonderful. However, when a student is engaged and wants to learn, studies have shown it is so much easier for them to retain the information they are taught. So, the question becomes, how can we make learning a FUN and joyous daily task? One way to do that is to be engaging with your children or students. The best way is to start with what they enjoy. Do they like dinosaurs? Have plastic dinosaurs that act out the story they are reading. Do they like Bratz? Have the dolls sit on the table and have your girl “teach” the dolls her math. Another thing to do is go to educational places and events. My sons LOVE going to the Da Vinci Center or the Lehigh Valley Zoo. Many libraries also have events that are engaging for your children. Reading Escapades & Math Explorers, Inc will be having an open house on Friday, September 20 with a pirate theme from 6:30-7:30. We are going to learn the science behind catapults and even have all the kids build one. Those types of events get children interesting in knowing more about a topic, then once piqued, you can teach them almost anything.

Petty Officer Serves with Navy’s Weather Command
Most Americans rely on weather forecasts to plan their daily routine. The U.S. Navy is no different. With numerous ships, submarines and airplanes deployed around the world, sailors and civilians serving with the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, advise Navy leaders about the impact of ocean and atmospheric conditions on future operations. Petty Officer 2nd Class Brady Myszkowski, a 2014 Pleasant Valley High School graduate and native of Jonas, Pennsylvania, is one of those responsible for providing timely, comprehensive and tactically relevant information for ships, submarines, aircraft and other commands operating throughout the globe. As an aerographer's mate, Myszkowski is responsible for aiding in the fight against the advisories submarines while tying weather into the equation.

MyPlate Snack Tips for Parents Source: www.choosemyplate.gov
Snacks can help children get the nutrients needed to grow and maintain a healthy weight. Prepare single-serving snacks for younger children to help them get just enough to satisfy their hunger. 1. spaghetti sauce, chopped vegetables, and low-fat shredded mozzarella and melt in the microwave. 2. Mix it up For older school-age kids, mix dried fruit, unsalted nuts, and popcorn in a snack-size bag for a quick trail mix. Blend plain fat-free or low-fat yogurt with 100% fruit juice and frozen peaches for a tasty smoothie. 3. Grab a glass of milk A cup of low-fat or fat-free milk or milk alternative (soy milk) is an easy way to drink a healthy snack. 4. Go for great whole grains Offer whole-wheat breads, popcorn, and wholeoat cereals that are high in fiber and low in added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium. Limit refinedgrain products such as snack bars, cakes, and sweetened cereals. 5. Nibble on lean protein Choose lean protein foods such as low-sodium deli meats or unsalted nuts. Wrap sliced, lowsodium deli turkey around an apple wedge. Store hard-cooked (boiled) eggs in the refrigerator for kids to enjoy any time. 6. Keep an eye on the size Snacks shouldn’t replace a meal, so look for ways to help your kids understand how much is enough. Store snack-size bags in the cupboard and use them to control serving sizes.

7. Fruits are quick and easy Fresh, frozen, dried, or canned fruits can be easy “grab-and-go” options that need little preparation. Offer whole fruit and limit the amount of 100% juice served. 8. Consider convenience A single-serving container of low-fat or fat-free yogurt or individually wrapped string cheese can be just enough for an after-school snack. 9. Swap out the sugar Keep healthier foods handy so kids avoid cookies, pastries, or candies between meals. Add seltzer water to a ½ cup of 100% fruit juice instead of offering soda. 10. Prepare homemade goodies For homemade sweets, add dried fruits like apricots or raisins and reduce the amount of sugar in the recipe. Adjust recipes that include fats like butter or shortening by using unsweetened applesauce or prune puree for half the amount of fat.

Meet Nala
Nala is a sweet, friendly 1.5 year old Rottweiler/ lab mix looking for a home. She is currently in a foster home with kids, cats and dogs. She will be spayed, up to date on vaccinations and microchipped prior to adoption. She had a rough start and has some physical scars to show, however, she is a loyal girl and loves kids. not yet learned, about alarm clocks. I took this thing home and unpacked it. It had about seven things to wind up and I didn't know which was the right one so I wound them all up. The directions said the clock would wake me up any time I wanted it to and I put the clock on my bureau and stuck a piece of paper on the face and on the paper I wrote "I vant to be vakened at 6." Sall and I crawled in bed. I laid there about an hour and couldn't sleep, I asked Sall, "Sall, are you asleep?" She said, "Yes, long already, be quiet." After a while I fell into a sound sleep. All at once I woke up and thought I heard the fire bell. I called Sall and said the house was on fire, she should put it out, I was too sleepy. Sall made me awake and said, "Jonas, that is your bewitched alarm clock." I let it ring for about a quarter hour and then I was tired of it by golly and crawled out to shut the clock off. Well that was the awfullest job I ever tackled. I slapped it in the face, shook it, choked it, coaxed it, turned it upside down. and it kept right on ringing. I got a bucket full of water and set it in there and it kept right on ringing. I got a few pillows and tied
them around it but in a few minutes they came undone. Sall thought maybe some of the handles on the back were to turn it off. She turned all the handles and it kept right on ringing. I guess it would be ringing today yet if I hadn't thrown it out the window. It hit a large rock and I even heard it ring when it hit the rock. It was certainly an alarm clock. It had me all alarmed. That little calf is worse than rainy weather. When

I went in to feed the cow the calf ran against me and threw me up against the back legs of the cow. There are lots of places that I would rather be than the hind legs of a cow, but it was not my will. But I wished that I had made my will out, for that cow kicked about that. When she kicked I flew back to where the calf was and the calf ran at me again and I flew back to the cow, and the cow did the same thing. And they kept it up till Sall heard the commotion and came to the rescue. The cow and calf make enough trouble for a bald-headed man like me to turn gray. Yours very truly, Jonas Grosskup P.S. I see in your Almont letter that the correspondent invited me to come to Almont again and stay longer. I get to Almont often and it is a nice little town but I would rather not get dragged down by a calf like I was last week. I feel so cheap. I will come down and take that correspondent out for a ride in my seven-cylinder Complex. -Die Barrig Barbie [Blue Mountain Barbara]

How to Curb Severe Sugar Cravings at Night Source: www.livestrong.com
As the sun goes down and your day wraps up, the temptation to reward yourself for a busy and productive day with a sugary treat can be hard to resist. But your body doesn't need the extra sugar, as too much of it is tied to an increase in obesity, type-2 diabetes, heart disease and other health conditions. While you can indulge in a sweet treat occasionally, take steps to curb those regular latenight sugar cravings.

Why Cravings Occur Food cravings don't indicate a nutritional deficiency, according to registered dietitian Joy Bauer on the Today Health website; rather, they come from learned behaviors, such as always eating a bowl of ice cream after dinner as a child; hormonal fluctuations; or sensory stimulation -- like when you see a commercial for a candy bar while watching television before bed. Cravings can be so tempting at night because it's often the first time you get to relax after a long day, and feelings of tiredness or emotion make it harder to say no to temptation. Eat Later, Eat Smart If you get late-night sugar cravings, you might simply still be hungry. Push your dinner back by one hour, leaving you less time to snack before you go to bed. Bauer also recommends eating at regular intervals throughout the day -- she suggests every five hours -- as this keeps your blood sugar steady and stops you from binging late at night. Purge the Pantry If you know you have a problem with indulging in cookies, candy or other sweet treats after the sun goes down, do yourself a favor and rid your kitchen of these temptations. If there's nothing on hand, there's nothing for you to binge on. When you're already in your pajamas and slippers, you're less likely to head out to the store for dessert.

Plan Your Bedtime Snack Trying to curb late-night sugar cravings doesn't mean you have to skip dessert daily -- you just need to control your portions and work them into your daily caloric allowance. For example, if chocolate is your late-night downfall, don't keep a gallon of chocolate ice cream in your freezer. You can, however, keep individually wrapped dark chocolate squares in the pantry and plan to allow yourself one a night. One ounce of dark chocolate has 164 calories and 10 grams of sugar, while a cup of chocolate ice cream contains 285 calories and 33 grams of sugar. Keep Yourself Busy As the day winds down, you might find yourself
bored -- and then you start thinking about sugary treats, particularly if you're spurred on by TV commercials. Turn off the TV and do something that will keep your mind occupied and off food. Read a book in a bubble bath, call your mother to catch up or finish the day with a series of crunches and jumping jacks. You might find that your cravings disappear when your mind stays occupied.

Healthy Snacks: Quick tips for parents Source: www.healthfinder.gov
Snacks don't need to be unhealthy. There are plenty of healthy snack options that give your kids important nutrients and help satisfy hunger between meals. Try these healthy snack ideas. • Make “ants on a log” (celery with peanut butter and raisins). • Add fruit (fresh, frozen, dried, or canned) to fat-free or low-fat yogurt. Look for canned, dried, and frozen fruit with no added sugars. • Blend fruit and yogurt with some 100% fruit juice to make a tasty smoothie. • Top whole-grain crackers with low-fat cheese. • Dip vegetable “matchsticks” (thin sticks made from fresh carrots, zucchini, or bell peppers) in hummus (a dip made from chickpeas). • Top whole-wheat bread, rice cakes, or apple slices with peanut butter. • Melt low-fat cheese in a whole-wheat tortilla to make quesadillas. • Mix air-popped popcorn with dried fruit and
unsalted nuts for homemade trail mix. • Dip tortilla chips in salsa. Look for chips with less sodium. • Make a mini pizza. Top half of a whole-wheat English with spaghetti sauce, chopped vegetables, and low-fat shredded cheese and heat it up in the microwave or oven. • Keep fresh fruit in a place that’s easy to reach in the refrigerator or on the kitchen table. This will make it easier for kids to grab a healthy choice. Snack healthy on the go. • Take unsalted nuts and unsweetened dried fruits. • Grab fresh vegetables or fresh fruit. • Pack low-fat string cheese sticks. • Use small reusable containers or baggies to take snacks on the go. Set the rules. • Teach your kids to ask before they help themselves to snacks. • Eat snacks at the table or in the kitchen, not in front of the TV or computer. • Serve snacks like pretzels or popcorn in a bowl. Don’t let kids snack directly out of the bag or box. • Drink water, milk (fat-free or low-fat), or 100% juice instead of soda or fruit-flavored drinks. Kids can drink up to ½ cup or 1 cup of juice a day.
