From The Editor’s Desk. Vince Lombardi, the legendary Green Bay Packers coach, is one of many football icons that are larger than life. Lombardi’s achievements with the Packers alone are impressive: three straight league championships and five in seven years, winning the first two Super Bowls in 1966 and 1967. He was also one of the earliest coaches to be open about his disdain for abhorrent and racist Jim Crow laws and the color barrier that still existed in the NFL during that era. There is a reason the National Football League’s Championship trophy is named after him. More than anything Lombardi believed in the power of hard work and sheer willpower, as any of his popular quotes illustrate. One of my favorite “Lombardisms” is: “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” Words to live by in this post-holiday season of adopting weight loss plans and other means of achieving the goals we were so resolute about at the beginning of the new year. You just have to keep chasing perfection and you’ll achieve your
Joe Korba
goal, whatever that may be. Even if you do slip up and overindulge on Buffalo wings at a Super Bowl party. Hard work, discipline, will power are the Lombardi way, and words to live by if you want to keep your resolutions for 2013. ---------------------------------------------

Bald Eagle Tour
Birders and anyone interested in seeing some of Pennsylvania’s wildlife are invited to join a group car pool tour to Pike County, PA. Bud Cole will be leading participants on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 21, for a car pool tour to see the resident and winter visiting bald eagles in Pike County, PA. This car pool tour takes up most of the daylight hours on January 21st. Tour participants will meet in Wind Gap at 8:00 a.m. in Arby’s Parking lot on the left side of Route 512 in Wind Gap just passed McDonald’s. Previous tours have observed anywhere from 7 to 53 bald eagles. Many bald eagles migrate south from Canada and northern New York to take advantage of open waters where the Lackawaxen River joins the Delaware River. This area remains free from ice and provides excellent fishing areas for the bald eagles. There is also a good chance of observing other birds and winter wildlife. Contact Bud Cole at bbbcole@enter.net or call 610-767-4043 for more information or to participate. Tour may be cancelled due to inclement weather. There is no fee, but optional donations to the Bald Eagle Institute are encouraged.

Slatington Library Board Honors Retiring Member
The Slatington Public Library board of director’s meeting of December 11, 2012 was a very special event. The library presented a plaque to Rodney Mummey in recognition of four decades of dedicated service as a board member. Mummey retired at the end of last year. Mummey was instrumental in facilitating the move of the library from what is now the antique shop to its current location. This was a monumental task, because all of the books, shelves, and furniture had to be relocated. The historic building was a store before the move, and Rodney and community volunteers did a lot of work to prepare the building for its new use. There have been capital improvement projects to maintain the library, and each time Rodney had a significant role in implementation of the work. He has held many offices on the board, and each year he prepares the library budget. This in itself is no small task, because every year funding is subject to many changes. Rodney has assisted with many computer and technical issues.. He prepared a wonderful written history of the library and what it has meant to the community to assist with fund raising. Rodney Mummey has given a lifetime of service to the Northern Lehigh community as a

teacher and library board member, and he has perpetuated a legacy of learning and literacy with both endeavors.

A Look at the Year Ahead
By Rep. Julie Harhart (R-Lehigh/Northampton) On Jan. 1, I took the oath of office for the 201314 legislative session of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. This was a great time to assess the past and look ahead to the future. As 2013 begins, the new legislative session provides us with many challenges and opportunities to make Pennsylvania better. Legislatively, we have an aggressive agenda ahead of us, with the state budget being our No. 1 priority. The economy has been slowly improving each year and the unemployment rate has been coming down, but there are still many areas of the state budget that are in need of greater funding than we are able to give them. The challenge will be to strike the right balance between adequately funding the core functions of government while also supporting those agencies and organizations that provide services to those most in need and help advance our state forward economically. As always, I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House and Senate to formulate a plan that will provide the most benefit to the Commonwealth and its residents. Leaders in the House, as well as the governor, have also been outspoken about several other
www.townandcountrygazette.com | January 17, 2013
legislative issues that will most likely be a high priority in the coming year. One of these issues is pension reform for both the State Employees’ Retirement System (SERS) Photo courtesy and the Public School julieharhart.com Employees’ Retirement System (PSERS). These two public pension systems both have a large amount of unfunded liability and need to be restructured in order to prevent a future catastrophic financial burden on the state. Private sector job creation and liquor store privatization are also likely to come up again. I am hopeful that new ideas and some compromise will help us reach consensus on these issues. Of course, these are only a sampling of the numerous topics sure to come before the General Assembly in the year ahead. As always, I look forward to working with my colleagues in both the House and Senate, as well as with the governor’s administration, to create sound and reasonable laws aimed at improving the quality of life, safety and opportunities of those residing and working in the Commonwealth.

Joke Corner Empty Seat
A young man was very excited because he just won a ticket to the Super Bowl. His excitement lessened as he realized his seat was in the back of the stadium. As he searched the rows ahead of him for a better seat, he found an empty one right next to the field. He approached the man sitting next to the empty
seat and asked if it was taken. The man replied, “No.” Amazed the young man asked, “How could someone pass up a seat like this?” The older gentleman responded, “That’s my wife’s seat. We’ve been to every Super Bowl together since the day we were married but she has passed away.”“Oh, how sad,” the man said. “I’m sorry to hear that, but couldn’t you find a friend or relative to come with you?”“No,” the man said,“They’re all at the funeral.” source: http://www.jokes4us.com/sportsjokes/ superbowljokes.html

Guinea pigs generally live for between 5 - 8

years, they should be kept indoors and away from drafts. Guinea pigs love running around and as such time out of their cages is a must. They can be vocal and many will often let you know when they want treats. Guinea pigs do shed which may cause allergies in some households. It is VERY important to house all small animals on either Aspen or Carefresh bedding. Cedar and Pine can be harmful to their respiratory systems and are therefore not recommended. Guinea pigs require a Guinea pig pellet food as their stable diet, not rabbit food. Guinea pigs have different needs to rabbits, most importantly their need for vitamin C, which they can not produce by themselves. Vegetables are important source of vitamin C, some vegetables to feed include parsley, kale, bell peppers, cilantro, carrots, romaine lettuce, cabbage etc. Guinea pigs should always have access to good quality hay, timothy hay is the best hay to give. Guinea pigs can make great pets and are very entertaining. If you think you can give Milkshake a great new home, come in and see her today. Milkshake is available for adoption NOW. Slatington 150th Celebration Planning Begins
By: Alice Wanamaker The borough of Slatington will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in August of 2014, and the planning for the weeklong events is underway. Councilman and acting Chairman, John Rinker organized the Slatington 150th Anniversary Committee last month and started meetings at his business. Meetings are currently scheduled for the first Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. at Rinker’s BBQ on Main (673 Main St., Slatington). The plans for the celebration are just beginning and the calendar is wide open. Rinker hopes to have fundraising events start in the near future with community events throughout the summer months leading up to August 2014. “This is your chance to get involved and be a part of the community,” Rinker said in a phone interview earlier this month. He hopes to fill the schedule quickly with events geared toward bringing the community together and celebrating our heritage like residents did back in 1989 when the last anniversary celebration was held. The 125th Anniversary celebration, held from Sullivan T&C Gazette half page Carrier 1212 113.pdf August 5-12, 1989 was a huge success and included Continued on Page 42

By: Alice Wanamaker
emington Ryde, hailing from State College, PA is scheduled to make an appearance at Kempton Rod & Gun Club later this month, days before they perform at the SPBGMA Awards in Nashville, Tennessee. Front man, 28-year-old Ryan Frankhouser leads the band on vocals and guitar. He is joined by Billy Lee Cox on banjo, Rich Kratzer on mandolin, and Richard Egolf on the upright bass. The band is scheduled to perform at Kempton Nights on January 26th; doors open at 3 p.m. and the show starts at 6. Frankhouser, who has been with the band since their start ten years ago, has seen a change in the crowd over the past decade noting that the Internet and use of traditional instrumentation in modern pop music has introduced a new demographic to Bluegrass. “Bluegrass is being incorporated into a whole lot of different styles [of music] “ Frankhouser said,“More and more young people [are] getting into the music.” Frankhouser has enjoyed playing venues all across the US and Canada. This year, they have 75 dates and venues on the schedule so far, including Kempton, Nashville and the DC Bluegrass Festival in late February. The heavy schedule is welcome. The band enjoys traveling and has one of the most vigorous tour schedules of any contemporary Bluegrass ensemble. Remington Ryde has released four albums and hosts their own Festival each July in Reedsville, PA. Their sound is traditional bluegrass, influenced by acts like Ricky Scaggs and Ralph Stanley, according to Frankhouser. While the band does perform covers, most of their music is original and a typical show includes more than just music. Frankhouser avowed that anyone attending their show should be ready for a full performance; “We involve comedy throughout the show not only are [fans] getting music, we like to take people out of this world for 45 minutes.” Frankhouser is looking forward to the show in Kempton noting that the crowd is welcoming “Kempton always seems to be an enthusiastic crowd and always appreciate the music.” He said. “This is an evening you don’t want to miss with the finest bluegrass you are going to find” You can still get tickets to the show by visiting bluegrassnights.com, remingtonryde.com or at the door the night of the show. Two 45-minute sets are scheduled following a one-hour open jam session that begins at 5 p.m.

Gen. Morgan Bridge Christmas Decorations Fund Drive Has Begun
Slatington’s Christmas lights, which dated back to mid 1960’s, were replaced approximately 10 years ago. At that time enough were purchased so that each of the sixty light poles on Main Street had a decoration. Since that time additional lights were purchased in Walnutport, and on the Lehigh River Bridge between the two boroughs. This was done through grant money and public donations. This allowed for a continuous display of Christmas lights along Main Street from Route 145 in Walnutport to the Southern border of Slatington. A few years ago the new General Morgan Bridge was constructed, and 16 Victorian styled light poles

were installed on the bridge and its approaches. These new light poles came with receptacles for lights. However, not enough old decorations are left to cover these light poles. There is now a gap in the Christmas decorations at the bridge. Northern Lehigh Future Focus hopes to remedy this situation by purchasing 8 new decorations to hang on half of the bridge light poles. In the future, consideration will be given to adding Christmas themed banners or colored light bulbs to the remaining 8 poles on the bridge. The decorations will be similar to the existing decorations; however, they will use LED lighting to cut down on electric costs. They will be purchased from a local Lehigh Valley dealer. Funds for the lighting will come from three sources: a grant, local residents and area businesses. The total cost of the project for 8 LED 36” wreaths is $2320. To date a $1160 grant has been approved from the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce Foundation for the project, leaving the balance to fully fund the project at $1160. Adding Christmas decorations on the new and attractive General Morgan Bridge will help keep Slatington’s entire Historic District attractive for the holidays. Each lighted wreath costs $290, but donations of any amount will be accepted. Purchasing the decorations now after the 2012 Christmas season will allow us to receive a discount on them. Area residents, business owners and community organizations are asked to consider donating towards this worthwhile community project. Those interested in donating towards the Christmas decorations can send checks to Attn: Bridge Christmas Decorations, Northern Lehigh Future Focus, P.O. Box 243, Slatington, PA 18080. That time the roads were blown shut as high as the fence posts. Pap was good to us children. He drove us to school in the morning in a large sled, when it was very cold. But evenings we had to walk home. One evening we came home later than we should have. We were asked why we were so late. “Yes, well,” we replied, “the

snow was deep and walking through it was very difficult.” The next morning it was once again very cold and Pap hitched up the team and drove us (to school). Then he saw why we were late coming home the previous evening. He saw the tracks where we climbed up on the snow banks and slid down on our backsides. After that we walked to school. Pap said nothing more about driving us. The 1929 Baer’s calendar had a good story about a cat. One lady said to a neighbor woman that her cat kept her awake the entire night. The cat sat on the garden fence and howled. “Yes, well,” replied the neighbor woman, who owned the cat, “the cat ate the canary last week and since that time she thinks she can really sing.” 2 Convenient Locations to Serve You Walnutport-Lehighton

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
Sara Jones Joins Northwestern’s Elite
Four-year varsity basketball starter. Multi-year varsity soccer starter. Multi-year field hockey starter. All achievements on Northwestern Lehigh’s Sara Jones’s résumé. There is now one more line that can be added to the senior’s laundry list of accomplishments: Scoring 1,000 career points. In the first quarter of an away game against William Allen High School on January 2, Jones drained a three-pointer to score her seventh point in the game and put her at 1,001 career points. Her jumper from beyond the arc made her the sixth female in Northwestern girls’ basketball history to accumulate 1,000 points in their high school career. After the basketball trickled through the twine, the referees and Allen High School officials halted the game for a ceremony honoring Jones’ impressive feat. They allowed photo opportunities

and ushered her parents onto the court. Allen players gave Jones congratulatory cards with a game ball and balloons. That outstanding display of sportsmanship resonated with Tigers’ head coach, Chris Deutsch,“What the Allentown School District, their Athletic Director [Scott Cooperman] and their basketball coach [Tom Gallagher] did was second to none. It was first class. It was a big night for Sara and her family. What Allentown [School District] did was a big difference and we really appreciate that.” Even though Sara was able to celebrate as soon as it happened, she says it didn’t sink in immediately, “It really hit me after the game. A lot of people were congratulating me and when I looked up in to the stands everyone was standing and applauding for me.” Jones continued, “People that I wouldn’t expect to come. Friends, not just my close friends, were there. It is great to see how much support I have.” Jones’ talent has allowed her to be a starter at the varsity level since her inaugural year at Northwestern Lehigh High School. During those years she has seen the Northwestern girls’ basketball program at its’ lowest and highest points. She endured the years with losing records and relished becoming relevant in the Colonial League again last winter. If you broach the topic of her stardom with her, she will remain modest, but Deutsch praised Jones’ skills on the hardwood in a phone interview, “In my opinion, she is the best player in our league right now. I think she is one of the best players in the area. Her leadership qualities are unbelievable. Girls really look up to her and that makes a big difference on our team. She does everything for our team.” The standout senior is the most recent girl to join the 1,000 points club at Northwestern. She is on pace to be the all-time leading scorer in Northwestern girls’ basketball history as the current leader, Dana Stellar, dropped 1,110 points in her career. However, Jones told me that she isn’t

even thinking about that as the team’s success is of the utmost importance. Jones’s fantastic senior season may turn out to be her best one statistically in her high school career. However, she isn’t worrying about that, as her stand out season is on the back of one of the best starts in Northwestern’s girls’ basketball history. The lady Tigers are off to a very impressive start. As of print-time they possessed a 12-0 overall record with a 8 – 0 mark in the colonial league. They are doing it mostly on the defensive side of the ball as in those first 12 games they have only allowed more than 36 points twice. Jones admitted, while breathing a sigh of relief, that with a playoff run inevitable, she is happy she already got to 1,000 points, “This is an honor and I’m glad I got it, but it is nice to know that it is out of the way. There is nothing individual left in the season. Now we can focus on what our goals are and how we can achieve them.”

New LT Historical Society Web Site
After a several years hiatus, the LT Historical Society is proud to announce a new web site for the historical society. You will find us at www. lehightownshiphistoricalsociety.org. Please visit our site and learn more about the society's work, coming events, St. Paul's restored one-room schoolhouse, the villages of Lehigh Township, and check out the "special feature." It includes several informational links and a store which offers books, building replicas, Christmas ornaments, shirts, maps, and more. A special thanks to the students at LCCC. The students designed the LTHS web site as a school project. Over the past several months, a few of the society members and students have been meeting and working to accomplish the task. We can finally announce that this month, the web site is up and running. We are indebted to these young students for their abilities and willingness to help us. Also on the web site, you will find a donation form. If you would like to contribute to the society, please print the form and mail it to the society. The historical society maintains a Memorial Book for anyone who wishes to donate in memory of a loved one. The big ongoing project is completing the addition to the historical centre which is necessary for the growth of the society. Please consider making a donation. The historical centre is available to the residents of Lehigh Township and is a building to be proud of. Also, the society maintains the restored St. Paul's Schoolhouse and work is done as funds are available at both areas.
