40th Wedding Anniversary Tony and Deb Pagotto celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on October 21, 2012. This joyous celebration included renewing their vows at Hope Lutheran Church, Cherryville with their large extended family. Pastor Jami Possinger officiated. The family then celebrated with dinner at Bravo Italian Restaurant. Through the years, Tony and Deb have raised four children, and are now enjoying their ten grandchildren. Another memorable moment was celebrated during the anniversary party. Sis and the late Jay Livermon have fourteen grandchildren, and now have nineteen great-grandchildren. All nineteen great-children were together for the first time during this celebration, keeping Sis on her toes.

Cold Weather And Cardiovascular Disease

Photo courtesy of the AHA’s Watch, Learn and Live library: www.heart.org/watchlearnlive. (NAPS)—The cooler temperatures of winter can present health challenges for those with heart disease and those who love them. To help, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association offer some tips. • People who are outdoors in cold weather should avoid sudden exertion, such as lifting a heavy shovelful of snow. Even walking through heavy, wet snow or snowdrifts can strain a person’s heart. Many people aren’t conditioned to the physical stress of outdoor activities and don’t know the dangers of being outdoors in cold weather. Winter sports enthusiasts who don’t take certain precautions can suffer accidental hypothermia. Hypothermia means the body temperature has fallen below 95 degrees Fahrenheit. It occurs when your body can’t produce enough energy to keep the internal body temperature warm enough. It can kill you. Heart failure causes most deaths in hypothermia. Symptoms include lack of coordination, mental confusion, slowed reactions, shivering and sleepiness. Here are some additional tips: • To keep warm, wear layers of clothing. This traps air between layers, forming a protective insulation. Also, wear a hat or headscarf. Heat can be lost through your head. And ears are especially

prone to frostbite. Keep your hands and feet warm, too, as they tend to lose heat rapidly. • Don’t drink alcoholic beverages before going outdoors or when outside. • Flu and pneumonia pose greater dangers for people who have heart failure, or any heart condition, than for healthy people. Ask a health care professional about getting a yearly influenza vaccine and a one-time pneumococcal vaccine (to guard against the most common form of bacterial pneumonia). Both vaccines are generally safe and seldom cause any severe reactions. • As much as possible, avoid anyone who has a cold or the flu. • Stay out of crowds during the height of flu season—usually October through March. • Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly and frequently, especially after using the bathroom and before eating. Keep your hands away from your face and insist that all caregivers wash their hands thoroughly before approaching you. • Always read the labels on all over-the-counter (OTC) medications, especially if you have blood pressure of 120/80 mm Hg or higher. Look for warnings to those with high blood pressure and to those who take blood pressure medications. Consult your doctor before taking any over-thecounter medications or supplements. • Be aware that the use of decongestants may raise blood pressure or interfere with the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications. • Check the sodium content of any OTCs. Some are high in sodium, which can raise blood pressure. People with high blood pressure should have under 1,500 mg of sodium a day from all sources. Learn more online at www.heart.org/ coldweather and www.heart.org/hbp. Merck Consumer Care, maker of Coricidin® HBP, is a sponsor of the American Heart Association’s High Blood Pressure website.

Buying Healthful Food

(NAPSI)—Families across America say that the cost of healthy groceries makes it hard for them to cook healthy meals, according to the national survey It’s Dinnertime. You don’t have to spend a lot of dough to get good food. The next time you’re at the grocery store, try these tips: • Buy fresh produce when it’s in season—it’s less expensive and tastes better that way. Also look at frozen and canned fruits and vegetables. They often cost less than fresh and may be more nutritious. • Compare unit prices, most often found on a small tag on the shelf under the item. Compare the cost of different-sized containers and different brands. • Read food labels. Consult the “% Daily Value” to find out if a serving of food is high

(20 percent or more) or low (5 percent or less) in a nutrient. Choose foods with lower percentages of saturated fat and sodium. • Choose whole grains. They keep you full longer. Look for the word “whole” (such as “whole wheat” or “whole grain flour”) in the first ingredient. Other common whole grains include brown rice and oatmeal. This advice and the It’s Dinnertime survey come from the experts at Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters®, sponsored by the ConAgra Foods® Foundation and Walmart. Cooking Matters is part of the No Kid Hungry campaign, a national movement to end child hunger in America by connecting kids with healthy food every day. Learn more at www. CookingMatters.org.

Joke Corner A young woman got lost driving in a New England snowstorm. A snowplow passed, so she started following it. After 30 minutes, the plow stopped, and the driver asked what she was doing. "My father always told me that if I got lost in a snowstorm, I should follow a plow," the woman said. "Oh," the driver replied. "Well, I'm almost done with this parking lot. If you want, you can follow me over to the next one."

Call for Community Singers The Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) “Tri-Cees” Community Chorale is seeking people from the community who share a passion for music and derive joy from singing with others. State Grants to Boost Carbon County Tourism Industry Because tourism remains the top industry in Carbon County, Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon), joined by local and state lawmakers and representatives of local tourism organizations gathered at the Lehigh Canal Park in Weissport late last month and announced state grants that were recently awarded to Carbon County to close key gaps on the Delaware and Lehigh Trail and make improvements to the trail. “This news comes at a good time for Carbon County tourism because estimates suggest that

every dollar in state tourism promotion funding has a return on investment of at least $25 in state and local tax revenues derived from tourismrelated spending,” said Heffley. “I have received a lot of positive feedback from local businesses and outdoor organizations regarding how these grants will help boost our local economy.” The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Community Conservation Partnerships Program grants for 2012 made an investment of $26.5 million in 198 projects statewide to revitalize communities, create new recreational opportunities, and conserve natural resources throughout Pennsylvania. Carbon County was also awarded $208,200 from the Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund for the further development of the Delaware and Lehigh Trail in Weissport and Lehighton boroughs. This grant is also to be used in East Penn Township to include the development of approximately 0.4 miles of on-road trail from the existing Delaware and Lehigh Trail in Weissport Borough to Bankway Street in Lehighton Borough,

State Grants to Boost Carbon County Tourism Industry and for construction of approximately 3.2 miles of trail from the sewage treatment plant south of Lehighton to the East Penn Boat Launch, near the Delaware and Lehigh Trailhead on Riverview Road in East Penn Township. This funding will also make road crossing improvements and include landscaping, signage and other related site improvements. “Because of a terrific local partnership, Carbon County is positioned to be the first county where the Delaware and Lehigh Trail is complete,” said Elissa M. Garofalo, president and executive director of the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor Inc. “After this project is built,

only one gap — the pedestrian bridge at Jim Thorpe — remains.” For more legislative information, visit Heffley’s website at RepHeffley.com or follow his legislative Facebook page at Facebook.com/RepHeffley.

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer

NL’s Johnson Chooses Harvard

In August Matt Millen told me that it takes a lot to enter the collegiate ranks from a smaller high school, but it is possible. When he talked about those student-athletes he said one trait does

wonders: “Character makes a huge difference. You get through on your athleticism...inevitably it catches up to you, where character matters is your ability to make decisions and decision making is what sports all comes down to...kids with good character make good decisions under pressure.” One local student-athlete that possesses both incredible athleticism and impeccable character is Northern Lehigh’s Caleb Johnson. The 6’5”, 215-pound senior is a phenomenal two-sport athlete for the Bulldogs as he excels on both the gridiron and the hardwood. His pigskin proficiency has attracted a lot of attention from institutions of higher learning. In early December, after months of visitations and deliberation, Johnson verbally committed to play football at Harvard University beginning next fall. Johnson took a lot of time choosing the location of his post-high school education. He opened hundreds of envelopes from interested programs and shook the hands of many coaches, recruiters, scouts and college boosters, before he settled on the Crimson. Johnson explained to me why he chose the Ivy-league school, “Well obviously it is a great education. It is in a nice city. I’ve never been up there, so I figured I’d give it a shot and I liked it.” Johnson is known for keeping a humble mentality even though he has accumulated a laundry list of accomplishments during his high school football career.

One difference that Johnson acknowledges will be difficult to get accustomed to is the transition from a small high school to a bigger university. As he will be leaving a high school that has enrolled less than 700 students during his four years to a university that has over 7,000 undergraduates enrolled this semester. He was a part of a lot of great Bulldog football teams, a few that made state playoff pushes, and he is looking to achieve success in Ivy League football as well, “ Yes[I think I will achieve success]. That program traditionally is very successful and I want to help carry on that tradition.” Johnson had many options when it came to choosing where he would attend school next fall. Other schools that he was seriously considering were Princeton, Lafayette, Colgate and Bucknell. He had a lot of offers from other schools, with six of them offering a full scholarship. The future D-I football player is grateful for having all of these opportunities and thanks his coach, Joe Tout, for helping him tremendously in the recruiting process, “Coach Tout did a lot for me. I attended a lot of camps and he made sure I was exposed [to colleges] and he really helped me a lot in all of this.” Under the aforementioned Tout, Johnson played tight end, running back, defensive end and linebacker in his years in the Northern Lehigh football program. At Harvard he will be playing linebacker and have a role on the special teams squad.

-Photo courtesy of beRecruited.com Education is of the utmost importance to him and he is undecided as of yet, but will probably be majoring in economics at the prestigious university. Johnson expects to earn his degree from Harvard, but if the NFL calls he is unsure on what he’d do, “I think I would probably finish school, but that is definitely something I’d look it.” He laughs and continues, “And I know that I’d be surprised if anything like that happens.” e-mail:extrapoint@townandcountrygazette.com Twitter: @extrapointTCG Facebook: Town & Country Gazette

Now doctors say one cannot wash oneself often enough. Grammy also did not do the laundry between Christmas and New Years. Now many people do the laundry every few days with these“automatic”machines. If those old bad luck stories [associated with washing clothes] would be true, then many people would have hard luck. We also were not allowed to put on clean underwear between Christmas and New Years, or one would get a fever the coming year. Now many people change socks and underwear every day to prevent sickness. My grandpap also did not clean out the stables between Christmas and New Years. Now the milk inspectors say the stables must be cleaned out daily and the manure pile is not even allowed to sit by the cow pens. Grandpap was always so happy when the trees were coated with ice between Christmas and New Years. That would indicate the tree would yield much fruit that coming year. Now people cover trees with sacks to keep the cold (ice) off them. Grammy did not under any circumstances sew between Christmas and New Years. She did not even allow us to sew doll clothes. She always said one would sew up the chicken’s backside, so they couldn’t lay eggs for the whole coming year. Grandma and grandpap certainly did not live right. We younger people are much smarter. [We heard that before, right?] But grandpap was 89 when he passed away, and grammy became 90! Hallich Nei Yaahr zu eich! Happy New Year to all! Tylar Romanishan - 18 on January 13th

The Family Budget

Then save for it.

There’s a “bottom to every family’s pocketbook.” So, many families sit down and talk about money matters and ways they can work together to stay inside the family budget. One thing they talk about are the things the family needs: shelter, food, clothes and so on. After that, they can talk about things they want to have, but that are not truly necessary. They might put limits on spending any extra money or find ways to cut back a bit, if needed.

Brainstorming Ideas

What things do families need to budget for? What things are nice to have or do, but are “extras” that they want? Read each item and circle “W” for things a family might want and “N” for things they need. 1. clothes 2. furniture 3. new toy 4. amusement parks 5. transportation 6. electricity 7. newer furniture 8. shelter 9. heat 10. savings 11. vacation

Next, find and circle each word in the family’s house. Our class got together to brainstorm ideas for ways kids can help with their family budgets. You can talk to your parents and choose which ideas might work for you!

It’s always smart to start to stash a little extra cash away. You can start your own cash stash by doing small jobs for family, friends or neighbors. You might be able to do extra chores around the house. Talk to your Mom or Dad to see if any of these ideas would “work” for you!
