From the Editor’s Desk
Joe Korba
It was with surprise and heavy hearts that we learned that our fellow community paper, Northern Valley Gazette has printed its final edition last month. As those who hold the print media in very high regard, we always lament losing a peer in the industry. All of us here at the Town & Country Gazette wish Lori A. West Vernon, the former publisher of the Northern Valley Gazette, best of luck in all of her future endeavors. With that said, we want to reiterate our mission statement. The Town & Country Gazette is here to proudly serve the community that has supported us for the past 29 years – thank you! Our sister paper, The Home News, has been in print since 1942 – we plan on making sure The Gazette has the same kind of longevity as well. As always, if you have any community news, events or items of interest, don’t

hesitate to contact us. We can’t say how much we appreciate our readership. Thank you for supporting us, and providing us with constructive feedback, we hope you continue to do so as we continue to grow and evolve. Former Gazette publisher, Brenda Emerick, and those who came before us, left some big shoes to fill. We strive to do right by our predecessors and, of course, all of you. We hope you all enjoy this edition of The Town & Country Gazette.

Lehigh Township Historical Society News Submitted by BEVERLY PUTT Open house dates at the Lehigh Township Historical Centre will continue through the summer on the second and fourth Sundays of each month up until October from 1 to 4 p.m. If you have not visited the museum lately, there have been many new acquisitions. Plan a visit to the historical centre soon; you will be glad you did. Recently, Mike Stevens of the "On the Pennsylvania Road" show on Channel 16 visited the LT Historical Centre in Pennsville and met some of the society members. WNEP TV's Mike Stevens has been traveling the Pennsylvania road for thirty years in search of interesting people doing interesting things. A show featuring the museum and possibly a second show featuring Indian Trail Park will be aired in the near future. Date and time has not been determined but the society will be contacted before the show is aired. The new fundraiser of purchasing Redner's coupons for hoagies is going well. If interested, call Brenda at 610-440-0151 and leave a message or contact any member of the society. Coupons are $4.50 each (same price as store price) and are easy to use. Kids can carry a coupon with them when they want a quick meal or use them as a

Gary Ray Mohry A man's legacy should not be judged by what he's done, rather the contributions left behind. Proud father, grandfather, and Vietnam veteran, Gary Ray Mohry passed away in his North Carolina home surrounded by loving family. Gary found peace at age 62 (October 18, 1951 – December 16, 2013) after a life devoted to his family. Gary was born and raised in Walnutport, son of Raymond Stewart and Minnie Levina (Peter) Mohry. He is survived by wife Kathy Diane and sisters Ginny Lacko and Kathleen Pechules. His legacy lives on through his children, Jason, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Chyenne (Bowman), and Nichole. In addition, the gift of his life was shared with three stepchildren. John Weis, Crystal Singleton, and Lori (Weis) Hedrick. Gary was also Pop-Pop to fifteen grandchildren. Since Gary moved on to peacefully rest, time moves slower and the room isn't as bright. We will always remember the laughs that were shared, good times that were had, and values that were instilled. A life that ended too short will have a much longer legacy.

Meet the Staff Shoes have more of an impact on your overall health than you might think; even some of the most comfortable options can be the worst for you. That being said, what is your favorite type of shoe to wear? Shoes are the one clothing item I’m willing to spend a little more money on for a quality product. I wear Doc Martens for everyday stuff and love my Nike Downshifter 4 running shoes for working out. JOE KORBA, Associate Publisher
Since barefoot isn’t technically a type of shoe, I choose my cycling shoes! ALICE WANAMAKER, Publishing Assistant My favorite type of shoe to wear is the usual athletic sneaker. Sneakers overall is what frequent my feet. Occasionally I wear flip-flops or moccasins if I feel the need to be really comfortable that day TYLER TRUMBAUER, Staff Writer
I have a pair of cute ankle boots in practically every color: black, brown, gray, beige, red, purple. I live in them all throughout the fall and winter. And as soon as it’s warm enough, I’m in flip-flops constantly. DANIELLE TEPPER, Publishing Assistant Sneakers. I don’t really have a brand preference. Just something that doesn’t hurt my feet if I need to walk in them all day. TONY PISCO, Art Director

Reiss Cycle Celebrates 20 Years of Living The Dream By ALICE WANAMAKER Reiss Cycle held a 20th anniversary celebration on June 22 to say thank you to their customers and celebrate the occasion. Reiss Cycle was opened in June 1994 by Brad and Hope Reiss. The business remains in the family and Brad Jr. has joined the team of mechanics. A large crowd came out to help them celebrate and enjoyed a wide spread of foods, raffles, music by DJ Hammer and a burn out pit. Hundreds of bikes filled the parking lot early and stuck around throughout the day. In addition to the food and music, there was a gas can toss as well as a spark ~ Thank you ~
Perhaps you sent a lovely card, or sat quietly in a chair. Perhaps you sent a funeral spray, if so we saw it there. Perhaps you spoke the kindest words, as any friend could say. Perhaps you were not there at all, just thought of us that day. Whatever you did to console our hearts, WE THANK YOU so very much for whatever part you played.
In memory of Bernice L. Wanamaker
The family of the late Bernice Wanamaker (Hess) wish to express their deep appreciation to those who have offered such kindness, support and messages of sympathy and comfort in our bereavement. We especially wish to thank Nathan at Harding Funeral Home of Slatington and Rev. Derrick Miliner. Our heartfelt thanks, The Wanamaker Family - Jocelyn Wedge, Mary Eck, Dianna Evert, Kenneth Wanamaker, Patti Smith, and their families.

We don’t know if she wrote it down at the cemetery [when he told it to her] or later wrote what she remembered. And also when a story is told and retold many times, I wonder which details are completely correct and which details may contain some errors. So I looked up the details to determine if they were completely correct or not. Here is what I found to date: Jacob and Caroline (Fetherolf) Leibensperger did not raise Jonas since all three of them were

about the same age. Most likely the parents of either Jacob or Caroline (Fetherolf) raised Jonas. I need to look up more about that. Jonas did not live the entire time with the Leibenspergers. He also lived with other people when he was an adult. But in the 1880’s, when Calvin was young, Jonas was a servant for John and Catharine (Leibensperger) Stump, Calvin’s parents. Jacob was drafted to go in the Civil War in September 1862. Someone else went in his place. (I am still trying to find that draft list.) If Jonas tried to take his place, he would have been turned back. In Pennsylvania in that year they had no Colored Troop Regiments and a man of color would not be permitted in a ‘white company’. In August 1863 Jonas, himself, was drafted. Then he went into the 25th Regiment Colored Troops. That was, however, later than the battle at Gettysburg. othing beats a summer night watching movies under the stars. According to their 27,000+ Facebook fans, the best place to go in the Valley is Becky's Drive-In. The history of long-running Becky's traces all the way back to a chance win. When he was younger, William Beck won a projector and used it to begin showing movies on a bed sheet on the living room wall. "Winning that got him started," said Cindy Beck-Deppe. Deppe is one of the Becks' five siblings who now helps run the drive-in. "Slatington had an indoor theater and he would go; he was fascinated by it." William Beck would travel to schools and fire halls, toting his projector, to show movies. He and his wife Alice operated an indoor theater and were therefore already familiar with the movie business when they purchased the land at present-day Becky's and opened the Route 45 Drive-In in 1946. They charged a quarter per car and before moving to the old fashioned speaker posts, the sound came through two loudspeakers for the whole place.
“Someone stole a Bart Simpson head. To this day, we don’t know where it went.” "Around 1981, he put in the radio transmitters in AM, so people couldn't steal or damage the speakers," said their son, Darrell Beck. "Then it went to FM and it's done that way still today." In 1971, the highway number changed and the drive-in re-branded itself as Becky's. The five Beck siblings bought the business in the early '80s, around 1982-3. "Our parents owned the business, so we were born into it," said Deppe. "Eventually, Dad wanted to retire." The five of them (three boys, two girls) grew up helping out around the drive-in when they were younger. Deppe and her sister, Mary Mayberry, would sell tickets. "I hung out every night because my parents were always over here," said Deppe. "Last night I saw lightning bugs and it reminded me of how we would go out and chase them as kids." Their mother Alice was known for her French fries. "She'd spend all day peeling potatoes and slicing them. They used to be fried in lard," said Deppe. "Now they just
come in bags." When it came time to pass the drive-in down, the siblings all had full-time jobs of their own. Cindy Deppe worked at the post office. Mary Mayberry is a teacher in Lancaster. Dale Beck passed away in 1997. Dennis Beck runs his own electrical business. Darrell Beck retired from Bethlehem Steel in 1993 and has spent every year since helping the business thrive. "If we hadn't had our own full-time jobs at that time, we might've thought it was crazy and let it go," said Beck. "But it evolved into us buying and running it and here we are how many years later and we're still here. It evolved into a business that kept us going." Pennsylvania currently has the highest number of operating drive-ins; some are even open year-round. There was a time when there were drive-ins all over the Lehigh Valley, before shopping centers started buying their land right out from under them. Now there are three left and Becky's is arguably the most popular. They've been voted the Best Drive-In in the Morning Call Readers' Choice Awards every year since the category was introduced in 2009. They've landed in Road Trip magazine and USA Today's Top Ten Drive-Ins list. So what's their advantage? Beck explained, "First, we're cheaper than most indoor houses with reasonable prices both for tickets and food. Then you're getting two movies for the price of one. And I also think it's nice that kids can come in their PJs. During the first movie, they might be a little rambunctious, but by the second one, they're passed out and Mom and Dad can enjoy some quiet time." He continued, "We try to keep the place clean and neat. We have a good product, quality sound and equipment. Friendly employees. We've updated where we had to. It's a battle to keep it in shape because of rain and the run-out. But we try to keep it comfortable for people, by keeping the smaller cars in front and big trucks in back. We get more

positive than negative feedback; people understand that it's virtually impossible to get lines moving fast when 200 people all want to eat at the same time." Becky's is open May through October and Deppe said that they get regular new-timers from out of state almost every weekend. Capacity for their two screens combined is approximately 800 cars. It's not uncommon for them to sell out on weekends, and even still, people will find a way in. "People will park anywhere just to see the movie. Or they'll park somewhere else and just walk in with chairs and blankets and sit in between the cars," laughed Deppe. "Sometimes at the end of the night, we have to walk around and wake people up." As can be expected, people also try to sneak in. "We get calls from businesses nearby and they'll say, hey, we just saw some kids climbing into a trunk, they're headed your way," said Deppe. "Or we'll get kids that obviously look older than 12 trying to buy a kids ticket." The more common thing people sneak in, however, is food. "Some drive-ins don't allow outside food or they charge extra for it," said Beck. "We tried to steer away from that, although there's times we think maybe we should. Like when a woman pulls up and has three pizza boxes in her lap! But we just hope that they'll also buy something from us, like soda or ice cream." The Beck kids believe a lot of people come for the memories. They know of a few people who met at the drive-in and ended up getting married. Deppe said just last month, they projected a proposal onto the screen. When she said yes, everyone in the lot honked their horns for them. They've also projected birthday messages. Kids are guaranteed a good time at Becky's. They've had moon bounces and pony rides, a mini fire engine makes the rounds before showtime, and sometimes even characters from the kids movies will pop up on the grounds. While this is usually a fun extra, problems always arise when you least expect them. "Someone stole a Bart Simpson head," laughed Deppe. “To this day, we don't know where it went. We expected it to show up in a parade somewhere." Local schools will also sometimes receive free passes and there are report card nights, not to mention the occasional fireworks display. Another big hit is their Dusk-to-Dawn marathons on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. Five movies play all night long and it only costs one dollar extra. "People bring tents and sofas and just camp out. They get pretty creative with the beds of pick-up trucks. Then they just try to stay awake. A lot of them do it, too," Deppe said. Before they know it, it will be time for the Beck siblings to pass the drive-in down again. Darrell says he's already ready to retire, "My eyes are going, my hearing's going, everything's going!" he joked. "Pretty soon it'll be time to just say, who wants it?" They all want to see the place continue to thrive, for their parents' sake. As their sister Mary wrote in a historical piece a few years ago, "Owning a drive-in is a labor of love. We all seem to love it."
Fun Fact
You can bring your pets to Becky’s! Dogs receive a treat upon arrival from the ticket booth and Deppe said “the regulars” have grown to expect it.
Page 23
How does it work? Cindy Deppe's son, Christopher, explains film projection in the digital age. Becky’s converted to digital in 2012.
"Before the new digital projector, this whole room was full. There were gigantic platters that held each movie. The movies came in on reels and we would have to put them together. It would take about an hour and a half to assemble a movie, now it only takes about a half hour to ingest it. The new previews come in on a flash drive that you feed through the server. They ship the movies on hard drives and you ingest them through the projector. This is 2K resolution. They go up to 4K, but I don't know how it could get much better. Our 35mm projectors lasted all the way from the '50s, but these are built to be obsolete in about
five years. From what I hear, there's a light engine in here. They're now developing a laser engine, so they'll last longer. Everything you see now is digital. The projector holds about four terabytes. Each movie is about 150 gigabytes and the projector can hold up to ten movies. They come in encrypted files and there are keys to unlock them that are only good for the amount of time they allow. There are digital watermarks displayed for about a fraction of a second. The audience would never notice them, but the film companies can track where they're being viewed. They cover all their bases [for anti-piracy].”

Nearly Half Of Senior Home Accidents Are Preventable, Survey Says Submitted by KRISTIN DANLEY-GREINER Nearly 20 million seniors aged 65 and older visit the emergency room each year with almost a third of the visits related to injuries, many of which are sustained in the place seniors are meant to feel the safest: their home. In fact, 65 percent of senior homes have at least one potential safety issue, according to adult children of seniors surveyed by Home Instead, Inc., franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care network. However, almost half of all home accidents by seniors (48 percent) can be avoided according to a recent survey of emergency room doctors. These preventable home hazards, such as throw rugs or loose railings, can be particularly harmful, leading to falls and injuries that can impact seniors’ ability to live independently. However, the majority of seniors (85 percent) haven’t taken any steps to prepare their homes for their changing needs as they grow older. “The home should be the safest and most comfortable place for aging seniors,” said Suzanne Boline, R.N., of the Home Instead Senior Care franchise office serving Northampton County. “It is critical for families and seniors to invest the time in identifying and making the necessary home safety modifications to ensure it stays that way.” Senior home safety experts recommend that
adult children of seniors take at least one day each year to perform a thorough safety check of their parents’ home. To help families accomplish this goal and help seniors reduce the risk of injury in their own homes, the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Northampton County is offering a free home safety checklist, an online safety assessment and recommendations for inexpensive modifications that could ensure the safety of older loved ones as part of the organization’s Making Home Safer for Seniors program. “An annual safety check can help seniors avoid dangers that could threaten their independence,” said Boline. “Using these free checklists and online tools can help families see those red flags they wouldn’t otherwise notice. And typically, these are relatively easy and affordable fixes—and they could be the difference between a trip to the emergency room and staying safe at home.” To request a free home safety checklist and other materials, please call the local Home Instead Senior Care office at 610-868-7333 or visit www. makinghomesaferforseniors.com. The library recently mailed its annual fund drive letters. Please consider making a donation to the library. Donations can be made in “memory of” and in “honor of” a special person/group. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed.

Rescue Pet
These six siblings are known as Given A Chance’s ‘Little Gem’ litter. “The rescue has been temporarily re-opened to help find them homes. There are four females and two males in the litter. Their mother came to us on May 5. She had been bred from continuously by her former owner, so we suspected she could be pregnant again. The mother is an all white Roborovski hamster and, as such, her babies are mostly white also. All the babies have been handled since they were ten days old. Roborovski hamsters are the smallest and fastest type of hamster and are therefore not suitable for children younger than ten years old. Dwarf hamsters usually live on average two years. The gems were born May 24. While Roborovski hamsters can co-exist together, same sex siblings have the best chance of being able to stay together throughout their lives (although this is not a certainty). Even two siblings may need to be separated later on if they continue to argue with each other. It is extremely important to house all small animals on safe unscented beddings, such as Kaytee Clean & Cozy, Carefresh, etc. Cedar and pine can be harmful to rodents and are therefore not recommended. Hamsters make great first time pets. If you think you can give one of the gems a great new home, email us today. The adoption fee for one hamster is $10 (or $15 for a pair).”

Interview with a Guinea Pig
Have you ever wondered what goes on inside the little head of a guinea pig? Well, wonder no more thanks to our friend, YouTube. “Pet Interviews—Guinea Pig” gathered over 4 million views, more than any other video by Pets Add Life (PAL), a nonprofit PSA campaign dedicated to promoting the joys and benefits of responsible pet ownership. Their tagline reads, “Pets need a pal to talk to. Get a pal for your pet.” They have over 100,000 subscribers and close to 11 million views on their 16 videos. While uploaded two years ago, the funny clip was given new life when the Huffington Post re-published it a couple weeks ago on their Good News vertical. If nothing else, it’s good for a laugh. (I crack up
every time he imitates a turtle.) Ladies, the pig’s name is Rory and he likes turtles, towels, and toilet paper. What a catch. View the clip at https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=jW3XtKBlTz0.

BROADWAY Stage VS. Film
My parents took me to New York City for my very first time to celebrate my eighth birthday with “Beauty & the Beast” on the Great White Way. It was my first show; I was completely captivated. It helped that the play was based on one of my favorite Disney movies. Scenes that played fondly in my head in soft animation exploded in front of my eyes in a dazzling display of pyrotechnics and choreography. Broadway has held a special place in my heart ever since. The success of certain stage shows has been helped along by film versions for years now, but only recently have I started to truly enjoy comparing the two. Just this month alone, I was able to do that twice: I saw “Aladdin” on stage and “Jersey Boys” on film. So I decided to do a quick breakdown of all the Broadway shows vs. movies I’ve seen. Ya know. For fun. 1. Beauty & the Beast (1995) What worked: The “Be Our Guest” dinner show has been unmatched in any show I've seen since. What didn't: The beast in the film is scary. The beast on stage was scary-ugly. That costume could've used some work. Which was better: The movie. Don't get me wrong, the show was amazing. But there's a reason why the Disney generation holds those classic animation films on such high pedastals. 2. The Little Mermaid (2007) What worked: My all-time favorite Disney movie came to life before my eyes. Enough said. What didn't: Having the actors roll around on Heelys really didn't create the illusion that everyone was underwater. Which was better: The movie. This show didn't last very long and I can see why. Plus, anyone but Jodi Benson singing "Part of Your World" just doesn't feel right. 3. Hairspray (2008) What worked: Harvey Fierstein reprised his Tony-winning role as Edna Turnblad. He was hilarious. What didn't: There was less of an emotional connection to the characters, especially Tracy. Which was better: The show. The movie is undoubtedly one of my favorites, but the show's finale was one big dance party. 4. Mamma Mia (2009) What worked: The music was fanfreaking-tastic. What didn't: The three possible fathers were a little hard to tell apart without having famous faces like Stellan, Pierce, and Colin. Which was better: The show. While the movie has Meryl Streep, the play has an infectious energy. We were still singing "Dancing Queen" long after we left the theater.
5. Mary Poppins (2011) What worked: The set design was phenomenal. The roof lifted right off the house to reveal the upstairs bedrooms, which I thought was pretty cool. Mary also flew over the audience on her umbrella. What didn't: It was kind of a snoozefest. Which was better: The movie. I don't particularly like it that much, but at least it has Julie Andrews. 6. The Lion King (2012) What worked: The stampede scene was unlike anything I've ever seen. Whenever you think something won't translate well to stage, don't doubt the set crew. What didn't: The lion head costumes were a bit on the strange side. It was the best way they could do it, but it didn't stop me from focusing on their human faces instead of their big lion heads. Which was better: The show. Again, the Disney movie is a favorite, but the play had so many African influences infused into it and the music gave me chills every time someone opened their mouth. It was also pretty funny. This one is at the top for me. 7. Jersey Boys (2012) What worked: The lead actor's voice was spectacular. People were giving standingOs before the show was even over. What didn't: I wasn't a fan of the constant narration. Which was better: The show. Even though it had the same lead actor, the movie was a little too slow-moving. 8. Rock of Ages (2012) What worked: It had the energy of a concert, more than a play. What didn't: Strangely, it was a little boring. Which was better: The movie. Julianne Hough should stick to dancing and Tom Cruise should stick to weird futuristic thrillers, and even still, the movie. 9. Newsies (2013) What worked: For me, the subject matter was a major draw. What didn't: The set was dull and monochromatic. There was little to no flair. Which was better: The show. No offense to Christian Bale, but it was easier to root for these guys. 10. Aladdin (2014) What worked: The magic carpet ride and "A Whole New World" gave me goosebumps on goosebumps. It was beautiful. And the cave of wonders was an amazing set. What didn't: While I sometimes enjoy the breaking of the fourth wall, I thought the genie accidentally pulling a Statue of Liberty souvenir instead of the lamp out of his pocket was a cheap laugh. Which was better: The show. This is yet another top favorite Disney movie and they did it justice. (It helped to have the same actor who voiced Jafar in the movie playing the role on stage!) The set simply glittered. It was hysterically funny. We all left the theater with big smiles on our faces.

What you will need:
• One (or two) sturdy plastic hangers • Plastic or metal shower curtain clips • Gorilla glue (optional)
Tank Top Closet Organizer When I saw this idea pop up on I couldn’t resist trying it out. I had already had a custom made scarf hanger, which saves tons of drawer space and provides wrinkle free scarves, so this was a no brainer. There are a few different methods out there using everything from hangers and shower curtain clips to curtain rods and tie holders. I chose the easier method, which took five minutes to make and is also capable of holding 24 tank tops.
Steps
Step 1: Attach each shower curtain clip to
the hanger, making sure each one opens/closes in the same direction. Step 2: You may want to glue the clips in place so they do not slip and flip around (and potentially drop your clean tanks all over the closet floor). This step is optional.

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
Slatington Sports Stories High school sports create a lot of memories for student athletes in their four years. Add 146 more years full of memories and one could write a book about them. Mike Hofmann Jr. is doing just that as he is chronicling Northern Lehigh/Slatington High School athletic history for the athletics portion in the book Slatington at 150: More Stories to Share. The book, which will be available for delivery in late December, is compiled by a committee in charge of celebrating the 150th anniversary of the town of Slatington. Members of the committee, in addition to Hofmann, are: Robert Stettner, Candyce Merkle, Tim Snyder, and Judy Snyder. Hofmann, who is a 2011 Northern Lehigh graduate, is known for his passion for Bulldog athletics. The current Moravian College student and member of the Greyhound track and field team, was a three-sport student athlete in high school and is also a volunteer girls’ basketball

coach at NL. The sports section of the collection of memories includes yearly record of the various teams, championship squads, NCAA division I student athletes, professional athletes, and members of the Ring of Honor, among other topics. Hofmann discussed his extensive research for the project. “I was more than excited to write about the history of Northern Lehigh athletics. Going into the research stage of this book, I thought I knew a vast majority of Northern Lehigh sports history; however, I could not have been more incorrect. The information I have uncovered will be interesting and thought-provoking to not only the novice Northern Lehigh athletic supporter, but also those who have been around since the days of Slatington High School. “It is truly a one-of-a-kind publication.” Only 500 copies of this unique book will be printed. One can reserve a copy for $50 by picking up and filling out an order form in the Slatington Public Library as well as the Slatington 150 store on Main Street in the borough of Slatington. Anyone who would like to contribute anything, such as stories or vintage photographs, to the sports portion of the book can email Hofmann at phillyfan1960@aol.com.
