Regular preventative maintenance will keep your car operating optimally and prolong its life. However, keeping up to date with maintenance is easier said than done. To help you prioritize and plan, here is a list of the top car maintenance mistakes owners typically make and how to avoid them. IGNORING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT Occasionally your car’s Check Engine light illuminates despite no obvious signs of trouble. If there isn’t a convenient time to have your vehicle inspected by a mechanic, the tendency is to continue driving without having it checked. Driving with possible engine problems, however, can quickly lead to larger, more expensive issues down the road. If your check engine light comes on, have your car checked by one of our ASE-certified technicians quickly and save money in the long run. DRIVING WITH AN OVERHEATING ENGINE Your car’s engine gets very hot while it is running, so it requires a cooling system to avoid overheating. Sometimes that cooling system can fail to do its job. If your engine begins overheating, stop immediately, turn off the ignition, and call for a tow. Driving with an overheating engine can lead to the need for extensive and expensive repairs.. NOT CHECKING TIRE PRESSURE It is nearly impossible to accurately gauge your car’s tire pressure from looks alone. Even when tires appear properly inflated, air pressure may still be high or low. Weather, pot holes, debris, and other factors can change the pressure of your car’s tires. Improperly inflated tires decrease fuel economy, and more importantly make your car less safe, as they change the way it handles and are more prone to blowouts. You should use a tire gauge to check
your air pressure regularly. If your car’s tires are routinely losing air pressure, stop by your local Pep Boys where our technicians can diagnose and resolve your problem quickly. IGNORING YOUR TPMS LIGHT Your Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light serves as a warning system for when one or more of your tires is deflated below what is considered safe by the vehicle’s manufacturer. If this light comes on while you are driving, pull over somewhere safe and verify whether your tire is losing air. Underinflated tires can cause a host of issues and are prone to blowouts, so add air when you can and have a Pep Boys certified technician check the tire to see if it can be fixed or will need to be replaced. Sometimes your TPMS malfunctions and needs replaced. If you believe your TPMS light is faulty, your local Pep Boys offers a Free TPMS check-up.. often. Same thing goes for having your car wheels aligned, as misalignment can be unnoticeable. Misaligned and/or unrotated tires can cause multiple issues, such as uneven treadwear. Pep Boys will check your car’s alignment for free and let you know if it needs serviced. As for tire rotation, most
manufacturers recommend having it done every 5,000-10,000 miles. SKIPPING OIL CHANGES Depending on the recommendations of your vehicle’s manufacturer, it may no longer be necessary to get an oil change every 3,000 miles. While this means spending less time and money with the mechanic, it doesn’t mean oil changes can be skipped. To be effective, motor oil can’t be too old because it will break down. This can lead to sludge deposits in your engine, which can damage

NEGLECTING FLUID CHECKS It’s a common misconception that motor oil is the only fluid in the car that needs to be checked and changed. It’s true that motor oil is one of the more critical fluids in your vehicle but there are many other fluids in the car that should be checked, exchanged, and/or topped off. Brake fluid, transmission fluid, engine coolant, and power steering fluid should all be checked and serviced as recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Doing this helps to avoid leaks and keep your vehicle operating properly. NOT INSPECTING THE BRAKES Brakes are arguably the most important part of your car. Unfortunately, they sometimes get overlooked by car owners, even if they are emitting the squeaking noise that typically accompanies worn down brake pads. If you hear a squealing or grinding noise when you brake, have your brake system evaluated as soon as possible. NOT CHANGING YOUR WINDSHIELD WIPERS Windshield wipers degrade with time and use, and as a result, they can leave streaks on your windshield. Rain, snow, and other precipitation can severely cut down on your ability to see the road and other vehicles clearly, so changing your wipers
when they wear out is very important. Take the wiper blade challenge to determine whether it’s time to replace your windshield wipers. USING HOME GLASS CLEANER TO CLEAN YOUR REAR WINDSHIELD Most home glass cleaners use ammonia as their chief cleaning agent. Ammonia can break down the heating elements in your rear window—those thin red lines, which are small wires used for defrosting. Instead, use window cleaner designed for automotive glass. What do you do with your used motor oil? If you have ever changed your own oil, you know that it’s important to recycle or dispose of it properly. Here are some tips for handling and getting rid of the used oil after you pour in the new. CAPTURING YOUR USED MOTOR OIL Let’s start with a few important tips to keep in mind when changing your own oil: 1. When draining the crankcase and removing the filter, it’s very important to catch every drop of used oil. This prevents it from being washed away into a stream or storm drain or finding its way into the soil. 2. Collect oil in a clean plastic or metal container with a tightly sealed lid; use only containers that are made of a suitable plastic, such as PE (polyethylene) or other material. For example, milk jugs are not a proper container for used oil, but you might consider reusing the original motor oil container. 3. Do not mix the oil with other automotive fluids or household chemicals (such as differential oil, antifreeze, solvent, paint, etc.). Also avoid using
containers that previously held these kinds of chemicals to store used oil. WHAT TO DO WITH THE USED OIL Next comes recycling or disposing of your used oil. To recycle your used oil properly, you’ll either want to take it to an oil change facility that accepts oil containers or to a household waste recycling facility near you. Whichever option you choose, it’s a good idea to call first to make sure that the facility will accept containers of used oil. Recycling your oil is a great way to help the environment. Your used motor oil can be cleaned and fully reused as a fuel oil. One gallon of used oil provides one gallon of fuel oil. With higherintensity processing, it can be re-refined back into lubricants at about a 60 percent yield – 1 gallon of used motor oil provides about 2.5 quarts of lubricating base oil. It’s not just the used oil from your car or truck that can be reused or re-refined. Used motor oil from motorcycles, boats, farm equipment and lawn mowers can be reused or rerefined as well. WHERE TO RECYCLE YOUR USED OIL Need help finding somewhere to recycle your oil? Earth 911 is a network that connects you to local environmental programs in the United States and parts of Canada. Visit Earth 911 or call 1-800-CLEANUP for more information and to find a location near you. It’s always a good idea to call ahead to confirm what different locations can and cannot recycle as well as what kinds of oil containers they will accept.

A wise buyer shops for a new vehicle based upon what he or she can truly afford. Keep an open mind and you could be pleasantly surprised by the list of vehicles within your price range. Affordability is a multi-faceted issue because the car-buying process can consist of several financial considerations. Here’s an example of the kinds of details that may be involved in a typical new-car deal: “The trade-in value of the vehicle I currently own is $10,400.” “I owe $2,200 on it.” Meaning, you have about $8,200 equity in the car. “I’ve got $2,000 in savings I want to put down.” Meaning, with the trade, you will be able to give the dealer a total of about $10,200. “I want to keep my payments under $400 per month for 60 months.” That monthly payment schedule will finance, roughly, about $20,000, meaning the total price of the whole package can

That means a new car in the price range of roughly $27,000, because there will be, generally, about 10 percent added in taxes, license, fees and so forth. Furthermore, it means the whole deal, by the time you have paid it off in five years, will have cost you about $34,200 ($400 times 60 months is $24,000, plus the $10,200 you gave the dealer in the form of your trade and the $2,000 down. This means the same as: “I can afford to buy a $27,000 vehicle.” And it’s going to cost you $34,200 and five years to do it. YOUR CURRENT VEHICLE -- TRADE IN OR SELL YOURSELF If your car is in extremely good condition and you have impeccable service records, it may be well worth your while to sell it on your own. On the other hand, if your car needs a lot of work, you may end up putting more money into it than you can recover -- so take a realistic look before you decide. For trade-in, get the Blue Book® Trade-in Tradein Value of your current vehicle. This value -- based upon the condition of your vehicle -- is an accurate representation of what you may expect to be offered when trading in your vehicle at a dealership. If you decide to trade in your vehicle, keep in mind the dealer must assume the responsibility for preparing your trade-in for resale. This process usually includes mechanical and smog inspections as well
as repairs to make the car ready to sell to the next owner. This will cost the dealer money, and the dealer will figure this into the deal. If you would prefer to sell your vehicle to a private party, check out the Blue Book® Private Party value first. This is the value you can expect to get when selling the vehicle to another consumer. LOAN AMOUNT To discover the amount you need to borrow, calculate the monthly payment you can afford via our payment calculator. This tool factors the interest rate and the term of your loan. Now add your available cash with the loan amount and you’ll begin to arrive at a price that works for you. Also, check for any customer or dealer incentives that may be available on your new vehicle, adding to your available cash amount. Remember, you still need to add state tax, license and fees, which vary by state and can be obtained through your local DMV. INVOICE PRICE The new car pricing report details the invoice price on each trim level. Dealer Invoice is the dealer’s cost for the vehicle only and doesn’t include any of the dealer’s costs for advertising, selling, preparing, displaying or financing the vehicle.

She discussed "Gardening for Butterflies and Hummingbirds" and gave tips to attract more of these creatures to our backyard gardens. We want to go swimming, The water is nice and warm.” They always gather – if the weather is clear – At Billy Ruth or the Hulle(?) store, Then they soon go to the swimming hole. They speak English pretty good, Yet the Dutch goes better, it is in their blood, Here they can be proud of that.

By the blacksmith shop, store, past the church; Then the inn, soon through the [turnpike] tollgate, Now we’re at the bridge. Come! Let us stand here a little, Nature’s picture! Oh how very beautiful! Here at the Cacoosing Creek.
In the shade over there are a few cows, They stand in water knee deep Next to that large rock. A chipmunk runs there yet, Now it crawls through a post hole And we don’t see it anymore.

At Lambert’s hole we turn in, We hurry quickly past the bumble bee nest They always buzz so terribly. The sun was high and very hot, That doesn’t matter – there is a race now, Who comes into the water first.
[Eschelman’s setting in this poem (which I edited for space) may be before a fireplace in winter, but he is reminiscing about a favorite swimming hole along a creek in summer, something to which most of us who grew up in the country can relate.] [The Cacoosing Creek is located in SW Berks County. It starts in Fritztown and flows northeastward to the Tulpehocken Creek. Cacoosing is a name derived from a Native American language purported to mean "place of owls".]
