From The Editor’s Desk. This is our first annual “Your Health and You” issue and I hope that you enjoy it. We here at the Town and Country Gazette plan on making this a tradition. Every July we’re going to publish articles on how you and your family can stay healthy as well as profiles of local medical professionals and new medical advances in the area. Personally, my mountain bike is what gets
Joe Korba
me off the couch and moving. I might be fairly sedentary all winter, but the first semi nice day in Spring my bike is down from the attic and I’m oiling the chain and checking the air in the tires. As most Pennsylvanians know, that means I’m often pedaling through slush and snow drifts. I don’t get out on my bike nearly as often as I’d like but I would take riding down a trail over jogging on a treadmill any day. I hope this edition of the Gazette inspires our readers to get active. Whether it is mountain biking, disc golf or a triathlon there are plenty of options in our area to get out and get fit!
Emerald Fireworks The Annual Emerald Fireworks show and picnic, which draws old friends near and far returns this year on July 9 to the Star Hose grounds in Emerald. The refreshment stands will be open at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Music will be provided by the band the Majestics at 7 p.m. There will be a lot of fun things for the entire family to do. Should it be needed, the fireworks rain date is set for July 10. The firework display will begin at 10:30 p.m.

Summer Movie
run-down Bad Teacher - ** out of Four – This new R-rated comedy casts Cameron Diaz as a selfish misanthrope similar to Billy Bob Thornton’s character in Bad Santa, and the similarities don’t stop there. Diaz plays a schoolteacher that is only biding her time and doing the bare minimum until she can land a wealthy suitor who can support her and her dreams of an extravagant lifestyle and some choice surgical “enhancements.” Like Thornton’s bank robbing Santa in his superior film Diaz is, of course, not beyond redemption. Supporting cast members Jason Segal and Justine Timberlake have some funny moments but overall Segal is by far the most relatable and winning character. He doesn’t get nearly enough screen time as a good-natured, stoner gym teacher pining for Diaz’s affection. This

movie has a broad, crowd-pleasing tone and hits more than misses, but Bad Teacher never escapes the shadow of better R-rated comedies like the Hangover and Bad Santa or does anything to rise above shallow, foul mouthed, ultimately forgettable Summer Movie comedy fodder.

COOLEST TREAT
The 1st Annual Coolest Treat Contest Exceeded Expectations! When we first pitched the idea of having our readers choose their favorite local place to get ice cream we had no idea how it would turn out. It seemed like a fun idea, a great way to engage our readers and an avenue to get some feedback. We didn’t know if people would take the time to vote online or mail in a response. But, judging by all the responses it seems ice cream is something everyone has an opinion on! On behalf of the Town & Country Gazette staff I would have to say that the response to Coolest Treat exceeded even our most optimistic predictions. I’d like to extend a big thank you everyone who participated. The voting is coming to an end, but with well over a thousand votes pouring into our office via mail and the Internet since April we have our work cut out for us. So far there are three clear frontrunners: Edgemont Acres, Blue Mountain Drive In and The Ice Cream Lab. We will announce the definitive winner of Coolest Treat in the July 21st issue. Joe Korba
Every Month Is “National Social Security Online” Month Have you ever stopped to appreciate the many celebrations we enjoy in this country? For example, did you know that July is National Baked Beans Month? It’s also National Hot Dog Month. If beans and hot dogs are not on your diet, that’s okay—it’s also National Blueberry Month! July also happens to be National Ice Cream Month—something almost as American as apple pie. (National Apple Pie Month was in May.) As you’re marking your calendar to keep all of these festivities in mind, we want to make sure you’re aware that every month can be National Social Security Online Month! As you’re taking all of these commemorative foods out on a picnic (July is also National Picnic Month), take your laptop or tablet with you so you can visit www.socialsecurity.gov. Whether you want to see what’s new at Social Security with our news section, find an answer to a question with our frequently asked questions section, or plan for your retirement with our Retirement Estimator or Benefits Planners, you can do it all easily at our website. Make www.socialsecurity.gov a part of your recreation (July is National Recreation Month). Visit our History page to learn all about the history and early days of Social Security. Resting on a blanket under a tree is a fun way to spend a picnic, but if that begins to get boring (July is National Anti-Boredom Month), you’ll want to tune into some of our fun public service announcements featuring Patty Duke, George Takei, Chubby Checker, and Don Francisco at www.socialsecurity.gov/pressoffice/psa-video. html. Parkland Garden Club Garden Tour
Learn To Relax (NAPSI)—For many women, having to balance work and family life can be overwhelming. Head & Shoulders celebrity dermatologist Ilyse Lefkowicz, M.D., offers budget-friendly pampering tips to help busy moms relax after a hectic day: • To revitalize skin, Dr. Lefkowicz recommends an at-home body scrub. Mix ½ cup granulated sugar, 1 tbsp. honey, 1 tsp. sweet almond oil and ¼ tsp. fresh lemon juice. The almond oil helps skin hold on to its moisture for a soft, glowing look and feel. • If you’re still feeling a bit stressed, Dr. Lefkowicz recommends a scalp massage to relax tense nerves. The next time you’re washing your hair, use the pads of your fingers to massage the scalp for a calming sensation. Soothing scents like eucalyptus and menthol can also relax tense nerves. • Dr. Lefkowicz is a board-certified dermatologist specializing in general and cosmetic dermatology and a clinical instructor in the Mount Sinai Medical Center Department of Dermatology.
The Parkland Garden club will present “Joie dans Le Jardin” (Joy in the Garden), its annual tour of 8 outstanding private gardens, rain or shine, July 16 from 9 a.m. to 4p.m.. This is a great opportunity to get innovative garden ideas as well as to meet and talk to the gardeners. Several of the gardens have been certified as Wildlife Habitats by the National Wildlife Foundation and as a Bird Sanctuary by the Audubon Society. David Shimp of Phoebe Floral will demonstrate container gardening at one garden and Ray Thorne will give tips on garden photography at another. Refreshments will be available at most of the gardens. To learn more or for locations to buy tickets call Sylvia 610-398-7182 or Barbara 610432-3313.

Municipal Update The Greater Northern Lehigh and Palmerton Area Chambers of Commerce held a “municipal update” meeting at the American Legion in Slatington. Community leaders held a panel during lunch to inform Chamber members about what’s been happening in their municipalities. Alice Rehrig, Lehigh Twp. Manager spoke first about how the upcoming changes in the Tax Collection system might cause some problems in rural areas. The new law reduces the number of tax collectors state wide from over 500 to about 60. The reduction in collectors may cause confusion and delays in processing resident’s taxes. Rehrig discussed new LED stoplights that are going to be installed in the Township. They’re being paid for with a Penn Dot grant and will save the township thousands of dollars a year in energy costs. Ken Nicholson, zoning code enforcement officer of North Whitehall Township spoke next about how the long rumored WalMart coming to North Whitehall is still in the application process for building permits. WEIS Market is also proposing to add gas pumps to the store on MacArthur Rd. in Whitehall. Nicholson also addressed the recent sewer grate thefts in Whitehall. The thieves were caught when spotted by township employees making a getaway with the grates hanging out of the open trunk of their car. These criminal masterminds had been taking the grates to an Allentown scrap yard to trade for cash. Roger Danielson, Palmerton Borough Manager, discussed the ten million dollar sewer plant upgrade and the waterline replacement on Lehigh Ave, which runs parallel to Delaware Avenue downtown. Palmerton received $900,000 in casino money and are using the grant to build a new fire station that should be completed by the fall of 2012. The Mayor of Slatington, Walter Niedermeyer, discussed the Borough changing their electricity supplier from PP & L to Keystone. The switch in energy suppliers will save Slatington about $30,000 a year. Niedermeyer commented on the Slatington Pool controversy saying that the Slatington Pool will be filled this year and for many years to come (The vote to fill the pool indefinitely passed 6-1 – ed.). This was in response to Slatington Council Member Kris Burek’s objection to the use of public resources to fill the pool and her call to the Lehigh County Communications Center to report water
theft. Burek is up for reelection in November. Annette Lacko, Borough Secretary and Mike Wentz, Grant Coordinator, gave an update on Walnutport in lieu of elected officials who couldn’t make it to the meeting. Grant monies have went towards purchasing a new police car, finishing a major storm water project and finishing the latest phase of improving the playground near the Walnutport Municipal building. Wentz anticipates receiving some Casino grant money that will go towards more improvements in the borough. Gerald Phillips, Township Supervisor from Washington Township, spoke about the $3,000 they donated to the Lehigh Gap Nature Center as well as the new banners that will be unveiled soon in Emerald. Tips for keeping fit this summer (ARA) - Summer is here and the time is right for achieving your personal health and fitness goals. Whether you are looking to tone up for the last bit of bikini season or are looking to increase your overall fitness to enjoy the wealth of outdoor recreation available in the sunny summer months and coming fall, making choices that improve your overall health are key. "Exercise is by far the overall best thing people can do to enhance their physical and psychological well-being," says Dr. Kevin Sverduk, associate professor and chair of the Sport-Exercise Psychology program at Argosy University, Southern California. "Regular exercise will boost your mood, sharpen your mind, give you greater self-confidence, reduce your chances of getting sick, and expand your energy." "We have a unique opportunity to exercise more in summer," says Dr. Suzanne Forbes-Vierling, a fitness/cardio instructor and chair of the College of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences at Argosy University, San Diego. "Whether it's biking, power-walking with friends, trying out a new cardio routine, dance classes such as African dance, Afro-Cuban, Latin, belly-dance - try
something different and exciting to shake up an old routine." Remember, however, that you should consult your doctor prior to starting any physical activity. Fitness is about more than what we do physically with our bodies - it's also about what we put into our bodies. "It's important to consider a permanent lifestyle shift in how we manage food - and eliminate diets," says Forbes-Vierling. Niki Continued on Page 26

Tips for Keeping Fit This Summer Continued from Page 25 Wray, registered dietitian and nutrition instructor at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Phoenix agrees. "For a nutritionist, 'diet' is the food and beverages that we consume. For most of the public, however, it's a loaded word that implies something we do for a short time." So how do you find the right eating plan to suit your needs? "The government has new Dietary Guidelines for Americans," says Wray. Designed to remind Americans to adopt healthier eating habits, "MyPlate" has replaced the food pyramid as the go-to source for nutrition. "The site allows you to plug in your age, weight, height and activity level to determine a customized food plan," says Wray. "The goals include eating less, drinking more water instead of beverages with many calories, switching to low-fat dairy options and reducing your sodium intake." Blood sugar levels can also be regulated through exercise. Thus eating a reasonable diet with low GI foods and regular bouts of exercise will help burn excess fat. You can learn more about the glycemic index of foods and find the GI for the foods you eat

The Obesity Cure (NAPSI)—Good news for people who feel they are losing the Battle of the Bulge: A new book may provide a breakthrough in nutritional science, identifying both the cause of and solution to obesity, America’s No. 1 metabolic disease. With a lifetime of scientific achievement and clinical insight, Dr. George Scheele, Nobel Associate and author, explains how to use nature’s gift, Power Amino Acids®, to avoid “addictive taste disorders” and harness the body’s own feedback mechanisms to normalize body weight. In his book, “The Obesity Cure,” Dr. Scheele reveals how to supplement the diet with essential, positive-charged and satiety amino acids (Power Amino Acids®) to tame appetite and rebalance metabolism to burn fat, build muscle and boost energy. The book is published by NovaLife and available through e-book vendors including Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, and Atlas Books. Recipe Round-Up Grilling makes it easy to knock fat out of food (ARA) - From juicy burgers to savory chicken breasts, it seems like everything just tastes better grilled. Meats including burgers (85 percent), steak (80 percent), hot dogs (79 percent), and chicken (73 percent) top the list of the most popular foods prepared using a grill, according to the National Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association. With summertime upon us, men and women alike are focused on cutting calories, and grilling is a great way to do just that. Veggie-Topped Beef Burgers Makes four servings. Ingredients: 1 red bell pepper, stemmed, seeded and quartered

Stop your eyes from aging this summer: Why UV protection is more important than you think (ARA) - Most Americans know the importance of UV blocking sunscreen to protect their skin from aging and diseases. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said when it comes to protecting their eyes. As few as 32 percent of Americans understand how important UV blockage is to protect their eyes from aging and diseases, according to the recent American Eye-Q survey, funded by the American Optometric Association (AOA). "Summer can be a dangerous time for the eyes because people spend so much time outdoors, exposed to the sun," says Dr. Sue Lowe, an AOA UV protection expert. "Overexposure to ultraviolet rays fast forwards aging of the eyes and increases the risk for serious diseases." If the eyes are exposed to excessive amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time, a "sunburn" called photokeratitis can occur. This condition can be painful and includes symptoms such as red eyes, a foreign body sensation or gritty feeling in the eyes, extreme sensitivity to light and excessive tearing. Photokeratitis is usually temporary and rarely causes permanent damage. Ongoing exposure to UV radiation, however, can cause serious harm to the eyes and age them prematurely. Research has shown that exposure to small amounts of UV radiation over a period of many years increases the chance of developing cataracts, macular degeneration - the leading cause of blindness in adults - and eye cancer. Long-term exposure may also cause damage to the retina, a nerve-rich lining of the eye that is used for seeing. "In addition to sunglasses, certain contact lenses incorporate an ultraviolet blocker in the lens, which helps further reduce exposure to UV light that can eventually cause cataracts and other eye problems," says Lowe. "Applying UV-blocking sunscreen around the eye area and wearing a hat will further protect the eyes and help prevent premature aging." To provide adequate protection for the eyes, the AOA recommends that sunglasses and protective contact lenses should: *Block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation *Screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light *Sunglasses should be perfectly matched in
color and free of distortion and imperfection and have lenses that are gray for proper color recognition. The AOA also urges parents to remember to protect infants' and children's eyes from the sun at all times. This is particularly important as kids tend to spend more time in the sun than adults. A good way to monitor eye health, maintain good vision and keep up to date on the latest in UV protection is by scheduling yearly comprehensive eye exams with an eye doctor. To find an optometrist in your area, or for additional information on how best to protect your eyes from UV radiation, visit www.AOA.org.
Male weight loss myths (ARA) - For many men, starting a weight loss regimen may seem unnecessary and cumbersome. If you’re like a lot of guys, you may be thinking that losing weight is a matter of staying active, and watching what you eat is more work than it’s worth. While men might think that weight loss plans are something better suited for women, the statistics show men are more likely to be overweight than their female counterparts. Where 72 percent of American males are overweight, 64 percent of women can be considered overweight, according to the most recent prevalence and trends report on obesity published in a 2010 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. If you’re a man who would like to shed a few pounds, but has previously been averse to trying a weight loss plan, it may not be as bad as you might think. Here are a few myths about male weight loss that may cause men to avoid eating healthier and the truth behind them. Myth: Men only need to exercise to lose weight. Reality: Unless you are working out for hours each day, simply working out and not worrying how many calories you consume is not a good plan for shedding pounds. The fact is, burning calories through exercise takes a lot longer than it does to consume them. A 200-pound man will burn about 450 calories during a three-mile run, according to Runner’s World. An average hamburger or Continued on Page 31

Reality: While overloading on fats and carbohydrates will likely lead to weight gain, both play an important role in healthy eating. the opposite effect. The key to healthy eating is getting the right balance of both. Myth 3: Losing weight means you have to eliminate alcohol. Reality: It’s true that consuming too many alcoholic beverages can lead to weight gain, but consuming in moderation can be part of a healthy diet, as long as you count those calories along with what you are eating.

Spread The Good Word St. John Neumann Regional School
St. John Neumann Regional School held its Inaugural Chess Championship on April 28. Participants were Samuel Arnold of Northampton, Jonathan Hillanbrand of Lehighton, and Wyatt Trantham of Slatington. The championship was a “double elimination” in which two losses would result in elimination from the remainder of the tournament. The opening match had Wyatt playing black against Jonathan’s white with Wyatt winning. The second match was won by Wyatt also this time playing white against Sam’s black. Sam and Jonathan played each other next each having one loss, Jonathan prevailed and Sam was eliminated from the championship round. In the Championship round Wyatt once again faced Jonathan and came out the winner. A final match between Sam and Jonathan resulted in victory for Sam. That left Sam and Jonathan each with one win and two losses, therefore they were co-recipients of second place in the championship.
Peter Kern the Chess Club Mentor had this to say about the Chess Club and players. “Each player is to be congratulated for mastery of the game and for adherence to the highest standards of sportsmanship”.

Industry leaders representing over 1,100 businesses, corporations, trade associations and unions recognized the students for their demonstrated excellence in 94 hands-on occupational and leadership contests, such as robotics, criminal justice, aviation maintenance and public speaking. All contests are designed, run and judged by industry using industry standards. The SkillsUSA Championships have been a premier event since 1967. Top student winners received gold, silver and bronze medallions. Many also received prizes such as tools of their trade and/or scholarships to further their careers and education. The SkillsUSA Championships is for high school and collegelevel students who are members of SkillsUSA. In addition, for the fifth year, high scorers in the contests received Skill Point Certificates. The Skill Point Certificate was awarded in 86 occupational and leadership areas to students who achieved a high score defined by industry. The Skill Point Certificates were introduced in 2007 as a

Haiti - Still Rebuilding
The Rev. Roger Rinker traveled to earthquake-ravaged Haiti in September 2010 and again with his wife Nancy in January to assist Love a Child Ministry in an effort to build homes, a medical clinic and a food warehouse. The Rinkers helped Love a Child Ministries secure a home for 500 displaced families who were previously living in straw huts or tents. Rev. Rinker who has worked and ministered in India, Honduras, Jamaica, Ecuador, Mexico and the Phillipines has never seen poverty as bad as it was in Haiti. There is still a long way to go to end the suffering in Haiti post-earthquake and cholera epidemic but one person can make a difference.

Northern Valley Emergency Medical Services Many decades ago Emergency Medical Services could best be described as a “grab and go”. In the event of an emergency volunteers would race to the scene in an effort to collect the ill speeding to the hospital in the hopes that care would be administered in time. By today’s standards care is provided immediately at the scene and during the transport to the hospital. As a result our expectations are when we become emergently ill a modern day ambulance will arrive with all of the best tools and staff available. The end result has been an increase in the costs to provide care. Not only has equipment become more sophisticated and expensive but educational requirements, training requirements, staffing and a necessity to store vehicles and their medications in a climate controlled environment have affected expenses. The average cost of an Advanced Life Support call is $875.00 and the average compensation received by the corps in the form of payment by Medicare $365.00, Medicaid $120.00 - $200.00 and private insurance can cover the entire bill to none of the bill. NOVA is the not for profit primary Advance Life Support provider of Emergency Medical Services for the residents of North Whitehall Township, Washington Township, Slatington Borough, Walnutport Borough and parts of Lowhill Township staffed by 38 paid full and part time Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics and Pre Hospital Registered Nurses and 20 volunteers. NOVA provides cutting edge Emergency Medical Services over a geographical area serviced by 9 fire departments at an annual operating budget in excess of one million dollars. Advanced Life Support crews respond to 911 calls on a 24 hour, 365 day per year basis from stations in Ormrod and Slatington ensuring a rapid response. Basic Life Support Crews are on duty during the evening and for special community events. In addition, NOVA operates a volunteer wheel chair van service providing non emergency transportation supplementing its ambulances. There are several factors, working together, responsible for NOVA’s ability to provide care. In early 1998 the Slatedale and North Whitehall Ambulance Corps combined their organizations to become the Northern Valley Emergency Medical Service. The new corporation, NOVA for short, was approved by the State in December 1997 and joint operations commenced on January 15, 1998. On June 1, 1999 NOVA and Slatington’s Community Ambulance Corps merged and
was recognized by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Consolidation is one of the most important factors, which have allowed NOVA to provide excellent care without suffering financial hardship or closure unlike many other corps in the State. This is tantamount since emergencies schedule themselves based upon when an emergency service provider is in or out of service.
A second and equally important factor to NOVA’s providing care is the level of cooperation from fire departments and level of support from the municipalities in which the corps serves. In the last decade expenses have risen, the effects of decreased volunteerism have become evident and compensation from Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance companies decreased sharply. The State of Pennsylvania requires that municipalities provide emergency medicals services. As a result, the Borough of Walnutport, the Borough of Slatington, Washington Township, and North Whitehall Township all provide the corps with financial and in kind support. Given recognized financial trends NOVA made the decision to consolidate further by selling its North Station on Dowell Street in Slatington further streamlining its budget. An invitation was extended from the Borough of Walnutport’s Diamond Fire Company and NOVA was graced with the capability of keeping an ambulance close to its northern tier. The Diamond Fire Company extended its quarters at no cost to the corps. A lease was signed as a formality and in kind NOVA made annual donations to the Diamond Fire Company’s annual truck fund. As time passed the Diamond Fire Company approached NOVA to discuss the possibility of the corps making monthly rental payments. At the same time the Borough of Slatington’s Fire Department Continued on Page 56

Northern Valley Emergency Medical Services Continued from Page 50 extended a formal invitation to NOVA to house of mention. If a single municipality would incur its ambulance at its station. Since both Fire the cost of providing its own emergency medical Departments were already using their buildings services in order to comply with the State’s with fixed expenses regardless of whether or requirements the costs could reach the hundreds not the ambulance was would be housed inside of thousands of dollars annually. Assuming that the invitations extended to NOVA were made at the costs for a municipality to provide their own no additional cost creating a win win for NOVA, ambulance service was simply equal to that of the fire departments, the municipalities and operating a $350000 police force that municipality constituents. NOVA felt compelled to house is still receiving one million dollar emergency its ambulance in Slatington’s Fire Department medical service from NOVA; over 3 times that of without a monthly cost deciding so forever what they would pay for on their own. At current indebted to the Diamond Fire Company for levels of contributions municipalities that work blazing new levels of cooperation. Since that time with NOVA are providing their constituents NOVA has signed leases with the Slatington Fire with million dollar emergency medical service Department, updated its crew quarters, installed for 5-6% of the cost of a police force and 1-2% of internet access and contributed emergency NOVA’s entire operating budget! The compelling equipment and instruction for the Slatington Fire conclusion is that the municipalities that work with NOVA save hundreds of thousands of dollars department in kind. These new levels of consolidation and per year annually when compared to having to cooperation have produced ingenious economies incur the cost of providing the service on their of scale resulting in savings for all concerned. The own which saves millions during the course cost savings which result from these economies of of a decade. The decision makers within the scale far exceed any opportunity cost one could municipalities and fire departments with whom contemplate and are perhaps the greatest success NOVA serves should be applauded for taking the necessary steps to far exceed the minimums required by the State of Pennsylvania, doing so at a fraction of the cost to their constituents using a corps that is a good steward in receipt of contributions ensuring responsible care is offered locally for years to come. The final factors NOVA attributes to its ability DRIVEWAYS TO HIGHWAYS to provide care are its staff, volunteers and BEST QUALITY ALWAYS subscribers. NOVA would also like to thank all of those who help the corps strive to meet the modern day expectations of Emergency Medical Service. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact NOVA at its Business Office at (610)262-1075 or contact one of the members of its Board of Directors.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ I CAN SLOW DOWN YOUR ELECTRIC METER…LEGALLY…AND SAVE YOU 8% TO 18% ON YOUR ELECTRIC BILL! PowerwoRx-e3 PowerwoRx-e3 (Pe3) provides a Whole-House Energy System for the best possible energy savings and protection based upon a unique patented technology providing three key benefits: Energy Savings (e1), Equipment Protection (e2), Electrical Noise Filtration (e3)
Energy Savings
Pe3 provides Energy Savings by reducing the power drawn from the utility by storing in its capacitors otherwise lost electricity caused by the inductive motors in the home. Some examples of inductive motors are air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, pool pumps, vacuum cleaners, furnace blower motors, fans, etc. The technology applied to Pe3 supplies that stored electricity back to inductive loads, thus causing decreased demand from the utility, thereby using less electricity. The process is called power factor optimization. Power Factor is the percentage of electricity delivered to a house and used effectively, compared to what is wasted. A 1.0 power factor means that all the electricity is being compared to what is wasted. A 1.0 power factor means that all the electricity is being used effectively for its purposed. However, most homes in America today have a .77 power factor or less. This means that 77% of the electricity that is coming through the meter (home or business) is being used effectively. The other 23% is being wasted by your inductive load. With a low power factor, the utility has to deliver more electricity to do the same work. Pe3 increases that power factor in most cases to .97 or .98, thus increasing the effective use of the electricity and lowering usage.
Equipment Protection
Pe3 provides Spike/Surge Suppression, a feature that protects appliances and electronics (TV’s, stereos, computers, DVR’s, security systems, wireless phones, florescent lamps, and other equipment) from voltage spikes can come from many different sources such as noisy equipment (like motors), power fluctuations, static electricity, and lighting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PowerwoRx e3 work in any home? Yes, as long as you have a circuit breaker panel with breaker switches and not the old screw in type fuses, the unit will work on any single-phase electric application for homes. If you say “yes” to only two or more of the following then you could be saving a significant amount of money on your electric bill right now! Is your home over 2,500 square feet? Is your central air conditioner or heat pump unit 3 years or older? Do you use an air conditioner regularly? Do you have a pool? Do you have a well? Hot tub or Jacuzzi? Is your washer/dryer not EnergyStar rated? Is your refrigerator/freezer not EnergyStar rated? Is your dishwasher not EnergyStar rated? Do you have more than one refrigerator or freezer? Is your forced air furnace 3 years or older? Do you have a number of appliances in your home? Will Pe3 affect any of my appliances and their normal use? If anything, your motors will run about 10% cooler, which is good for a motor because heat is the enemy of a motor. Is Pe3 tested and approved by independent labs? Yes, the Pe3 is UL listed and tested. Also, the technology is recognized by the US Department of Energy. PowerwoRx-e3 is a unique application of proven technologies. It provides your home or business with the electrical power conditioned capabilities previously available only to the largest facilities and installations. Pe3 is easy to install and provides immediate benefits. It provides power factor correction, surge and spike suppression and noise reduction in one cost-effective and maintenance-free package. Homes and businesses contain many electronic devices that are sensitive to surges. Nearby lightning can create an energy surge that enters your property and destroys valuable equipment. On a smaller scale, circuit noise (from hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, etc.) effects the performance of audio systems, computers, home entertainment systems, and the picture clarity of TVs. Pe3 protects the customer’s property from all such power disruptions. At the same time, it saves energy on air conditioners, refrigerators, pumps, and fans. Pe3 improves equipment performance and prolongs equipment life. Is Pe3 easy to install? We recommend installation by an electrician. The unit comes with complete installation instructions. It installs in about 20-30 minutes. How long with Pe3 last? It has a predicted lifespan of over 20 years.
