FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK Danielle S. Tepper It’s a little twist of serendipity that the announcement I’m about to make falls into our Animal Advocacy edition. This will be my last issue with the Gazette—I’ve resigned from my position as Editor to embark on a new adventure, heading down to Maryland to join The Humane Society of the United States as their new web marketing specialist. I’ve been a long-time supporter of their dedicated and honorable work and I’m thrilled to be joining their team. If you’ve ever donated to their organization or looked to them for pet advice, keep an eye on some big changes coming to their website [www.humanesociety.org] soon, because that’s where I’ll be. I’m happy to welcome back Kathy Marsh to our newspaper team. Kathy is a Gazette vet, serving as BL U E MO U N TA IN

MEET THE STAFF If you could spend a day as any wild animal, what would you choose and why? Well since I can’t be a mermaid, surely dolphins are the next best thing. They’ve always been my favorite and swimming with a wild pod in Hawaii was a life-changing experience. I just love how graceful they are in the water. (Do you love dolphins? Give the Oscar-winning documentary “The Cove” a watch and do your part to protect them.) Danielle Tepper, Editor
Sea otter, hands down! They are one of my favorite animals; they’re so adorable and look like they just have so much fun. They’re so unique and interesting too—they use tools like rocks to access their food and they hold hands so they don’t float away from one another. (On a Harry Potter note, I would want the sea otter to be my Patronus.) Catherine Stroh, Publishing Assistant
While I have no desire to be an animal of any kind, I will say a tree frog because that is currently my son Evan’s favorite animal. Tony Pisco, Art Director
I would be a turtle, slow and steady, always in my own home. Christine Stroh, Account Executive

He died and was buried, and later his wife allowed them to dug him up and ordered him to be reburied at another church. That made his church members talk a lot. They said, “ His wife did not let him have any rest when he lived, and now she also does not let him have any rest when he is dead.” (This is a story that is true.) Years ago old fellows used to travel around filling out baptismal certificates for families where there were children. There was such a person in Northampton County by the name of Martin Brechal. We found out this week who this fellow was. Before Lehigh County existed (Lehigh was erected out of Northampton County later, about a hundred and fifty years ago [1812].), this Brechal was a school teacher. That time they often held school in someone’s house. Over in what now is Lehigh County, this man held school in one, John Werley’s kitchen. His students were older and full grown. The housewife was often spinning at the same time that the

schoolmaster Brechal held class in the kitchen. When they became older, the boys and the girls often acted mischievously [lit., slit-eared]. Brechal was, however, always ready with a hickory stick and he also used it. The table was in the middle of the kitchen and the students sat around it. Brechal sat with the back to the students and had the face to the wall. When they did something wrong, he was ready to use the stick. The students wondered how he always knew what happened. He had a mirror on the wall. Brechal was a good writer [calligrapher] and many students came to him to learn writing [calligraphy]. During summer he travelled around the area to fill out baptismal certificates using Fraktur art and writing style. We have our great grandmother’s baptismal certificate which was made by Brechal. All of the Fraktur art and writing on it was done by hand and it was made in 1808. [Martin Brechal (1757 – 1831) was born in Germany and emigrated to America before the Revolutionary War. He was a veteran of several battles of that war and remained with the army until Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown. It is reported that he married two or three times, the last to Catharine Confer from 1805 until his death. He lived at least some of those years in Weisenberg Township. It is apparently those years that Florence wrote about, her source of information being the History of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania and a genealogical record of
its families by Charles Rhoads Roberts, et al. ] [The term, Fraktur, refers in general to a Gothic script type of lettering and also as used here specifically to the illuminated (decorated) manuscripts created by the Pennsylvania Dutch, mainly in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Those documents of course used that gothic script type of lettering and were “brightened up” with colorful figures of birds, animals, flowers and shapes like hearts. The earlier ones were usually created by hand and then later on printed versions were available with space to fill in appropriate personal and/or family information. The more common type of manuscripts found are Vorschrift, writing specimen (for use in schools); Geburts- und Tauf- Schein, birth and baptismal certificate and Haus Segen, house blessing. Also found are Guldene A B C, a primer to teach the alphabet in schools; Belohnung, reward of merit (presented to school students) and Lese-Zeichen, a bookmarker, as well as other printed items featuring a religious theme. The titles of these are in German as are their content, most likely since most are related directly or indirectly with the churches of the Dutch people where services were conducted in German rather than the Dialect. Much has been written about these Fraktur manuscripts and some have been preserved even to this day and needless to say they can be rather costly to acquire.]

COOKING WITH CATHERINE
Greek Stuffed Peppers Recipe: www.buzzfeed.com/merleoneal/these-greek-stuffed-peppers-are-easy-to-make-andactually-he?utm_term=.lhpY6XyQD4#.jkpBO0qxQj DIRECTIONS INGREDIENTS • Preheat oven to 400F. • 4 large red bell peppers • Cut tops off of bell peppers, then scrape out seeds and • ½ small red onion, minced white pith. Save the pepper tops. • ½ pound ground beef • In mixing bowl, combine all remaining ingredients, season • 3 oz. feta cheese, crumbled with salt and pepper, and stir until thoroughly mixed. • 6 pitted kalamata olives, roughly • Divide beef mixture into each pepper, stuff, then place tops chopped of peppers back on. • ¼ cup fresh parsley leaves, chopped • Make sure peppers are on a baking sheet or oven-safe • ¼ cup fresh mint leaves, chopped • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper skillet, then bake until meat is cooked and peppers are soft and starting to shrivel, about 40-45 minutes. The best thing about this recipe is how easy it was! It was so quick and easy and overall, it’s a good recipe. I do not care for black olives so I opted out of using those, and I thought about adding bacon but honestly was too lazy for the extra step. For next time, I would add more feta, maybe some garlic, and more onion. I didn’t actually measure the onion so I don’t think I used enough. This was a good start to a stuffed pepper but it was a little lackluster, maybe the olives would add something special to it. Good luck, see what you can do to make this stuffed pepper unique!

with a short sequel season. As addicted as I am to Michael Scofield’s pretty face these days, I’ll likely be tackling that topic soon too.) For my final piece, I’m concluding the theme with three shows that I would love to see come back somehow. Thank you all for reading Pajamas Over People!

Three Shows I Hope Cash In On The Revival Trend
The era of choosing pajamas over people has come to a bittersweet end. Since I’m leaving my post as editor of the Gazette this month (see page 3), I’m taking my columns with me. Animals Gone Viral on our pet page will no longer appear, nor will this. The two have represented two of my passions and I was lucky enough to be awarded the creative freedom during my time here to write about both. Good news is, you can still catch my pop culture coverage over on my blog, www. EntertainmentPSA.com. If you’ve enjoyed reading this column—I know some of you have and I thank those of you who reached out specifically to tell me so—I hope you’ll continue to follow it at its permanent home. Last issue, I explored the ongoing trend of TV show reboots. I talked about Girl Meets World, Fuller House, and Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. (I also recently started binge-watching Prison Break for the first time, which will be returning next spring

Buffy is my second favorite TV show of all time. It somehow managed to straddle the line between drama and comedy, action and romance, sci-fi and reality. Buffy Summers had a fictional calling, but she made it feel so very real. You wouldn’t think a show about werewolves, witches, demons, and “the forces of darkness” could make you laugh so hard your sides hurt or bring tears to your eyes, but Buffy managed to do both. Even though Buff was no longer the chosen one nor was she living on a Hellmouth by the series end, the potential is still there for some sort of whopping evil showdown that would force the Scoobies back together for a reunion special. My fingers (and toes) are crossed for the possibility.
2. Friends
The cast keeps insisting it’ll never happen, but there’s always hope. Unlike Will & Grace and How I Met Your Mother (two other beloved sitcoms of mine), Friends was the only one that didn’t jump into the future, squashing any potential for where a storyline could possibly emerge. A short movie about a milestone that brings the friends back together again would be plenty to make everyone happy. Fans have been clamoring for it and there’s no doubt it would pay off—the buzz surrounding their appearance for the James Burrows tribute this News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || JULY 7, 2016
past February was proof. Give us our Friends!
3. Smash
The little show that tried and failed; I was pretty disappointed when Smash was canceled. It had all the makings of a fabulous musical—behind the scenes of Broadway, featuring actual Broadway vets! What it takes to start a show and take it all the way to the Tonys! But the first season faltered one too many times and even though the second season trimmed the fat and injected more original songs, the damage was done. The race to the finish line was a convoluted mess. The plot could easily pick right back up a few years down the line with a brilliant new idea for the stage, reuniting that group of talented individuals trying to pull it off again, but this time, do it right. OR, take one of the ideas from the show and put it on an actual Broadway stage (something that was once rumored to happen). Fans of the show probably wouldn’t hesitate to shell out some dough to see Bombshell or Hit List on the Great White Way.

Miller-Keystone Blood Center will conduct its next Palmerton community blood drive on Monday, July 18 from 11:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the airconditioned First United Church of Christ, next to Palmerton Borough Hall. We especially encourage college and eligible high school students to donate. Anyone over 17, weighing at least 110 pounds, in general good health, who has not donated since May 22 is eligible. Parental permission is not required. The Palmerton area is fortunate to have a number of donors who appear for nearly every blood drive, but we need new or "occasional" donors to reach our goal. Only 5% of eligible donors ever donate. Why not be one of that elite group? For more information, or to make an appointment, call George Ashman at 610-826-2097 or email gashman@ptd.net. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Joe Sommer Memorial Benefit
Submitted by LEHIGH VALLEY COMMUNITY BENEFIT
On Wednesday, May 25, Joe Sommer Jr. was tragically murdered in a senseless act of violence. The Lehigh Valley Community Benefit is a nonprofit organization which Joe was actively involved with, an organization which helps families who have suffered tragedies throughout the Lehigh Valley as well as donating funds to local organizations. Joe was a prominent figure in the lives of many local children; he was the head wrestling coach for Northampton Athletic Association Elementary Wrestlers, Vice President of the N.A.W.C. and former board member of the Valley Elementary League. He always unselfishly donated his time as a positive role model for our young members in the community. Joe is irreplaceable and will be truly missed by all who knew him. Please join us for a memorial benefit in his honor at the Tri-Boro Sportsman’s Club (21st St. and Canal St. in Northampton) on July 24 (rain or shine) from 12 to 8 p.m. There will be a nonstop escorted motorcycle ride hosted by Pocono Harley Davidson, beginning there and ending at the club. Registration is from 9 to 11 a.m. with kickstands up at 11 sharp.
There will be live entertainment provided by Social Call and Trick S t a c y, facepainting by Dazzling Doodle, Say Cheese Photo Booth, and a performance by Huffy the Clown. All proceeds from this benefit will be presented in a wrestling scholarship in Joe’s honor as well as donations to be made to other charities and organizations that Joe and his family supported. Come join us for food, beverages, raffles, and a great time celebrating Joe’s legacy. Tickets are $25 in advance, available at Tri-Boro and Pocono Harley-Davidson. Tickets are $30 on the day of the event. Children 12 and under are free. Any questions or concerns, contact Rick Nauman at 610-762-5010 or rnauman1968@yahoo.com.

Ringer Scholarship Committee Awards Five Lucky Students SUBMITTED BY JUDY MUTHARD
The Ringer Scholarship Committee awarded five scholarships on Sunday, June 12. This marked the 18th consecutive year that college aged students were recognized for their scholastic abilities and their continued presence and involvement in activities of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Slatington. The scholarships were made possible from a most generous investment by the late Jim and Bob Ringer and Bob’s widow, Isabel, a tremendous financial help for these young adults. Selected as recipients this year were: 1. Carolann Green, an Early Childhood Education major, transferring from LCCC to Bloomsburg University. 2. Alex Sigley, transferring from LCCC to Kutztown University, pursuing a degree in Accounting. 3. Taylor Kocher, who will return to Boston University as a sophomore, majoring in Communications. 4. Brandon Miller, a recent graduate of Northwestern Lehigh High School, will begin his
studies at Lycoming College. 5. Phoebe Thomasco, a 2016 honor graduate of Northern Lehigh High School, will attend Elizabeth College in pursuit of a degree in Occupational Therapy. The congregation offers their congratulation, support and well wishes for success in the college experiences.

Piper the Wonder Dog
It’s a sad day when you realize a dog has a way cooler job than you. Piper is an eight-year-old
border collie and has the important responsibility of being the K-9 wildlife manager at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, Michigan. Every day, he works a full-time shift from the early morning to mid-afternoon chasing away birds, deer, and any other animals that may be obstructing the runways. He’s been doing this with his handler, Brian Edwards, since 2008. Piper has been trained to be accustomed to the sound of large aircraft flying overhead and goes into “launch mode” to chase wildlife that may be hazardous to planes attempting to take off or land. BuzzFeed caught wind of Piper’s unique occupation and word spread quickly. You can read more about Piper on the Cherry Capital Airport website (tvcairport.com/airportk9).

owning a pet. Owning an animal is both a privilege and a pleasure. However, with this privilege, there is also a responsibility to your neighbors and to your community. Pet owners are required to pick up all animal droppings on their property daily. All yards, pens, structures, stables, kennels, and areas where animals are kept must be cleaned daily in order to prevent odors. A pet waste station at the entrance to the Slate Heritage Trail has been recently installed to help residents walking pets in this section of town. It contains bags and a receptacle to place pet waste. Other pet waste stations are planned for installation at other locations in the future. Failing to immediately remove any droppings from your animal on public or private property is a serious violation. All animals on any public street, sidewalk, park, or other property must be secured by a leash less than six feet long and held by a person capable of controlling the animal. Animal owners must provide clean and proper animal shelter both indoors and outdoors. Animals must have adequate food and water. Cats and dogs are not allowed to run loose within the borough of Slatington. Cats and dogs, which are running loose/ at large may be impounded and destroyed under certain conditions. Pet owners must take measures to prevent their pets from excessively barking, crying, or making annoying noise. Owners who let their animals to bark or make noise continuously for ten minutes or intermittently for 30 minutes are in violation. State law requires all cats and dogs three months of age or older to have a current license. The license and vaccination tags must be on your pet’s collar and must be worn at all times. It is recommended you keep the rabies certificate you receive from the veterinarian in a safe place. Dog licenses are available at the Lehigh County Government Center, most pet stores and locally at Boyer’s Hardware. The Borough of Slatington requires all cats to be licensed on an annual basis. Cat licenses are available at the Slatington Borough Office, located at 125 S. Walnut Street. The cost for a cat license is $2 per year. It is of course recommended that all animals be spayed or neutered. The maximum number of pets allowed per household in the borough of Slatington is three. The owning and harboring of wild and exotic pets is generally forbidden. Wild and exotic animals are defined as animals that are fierce and pose a danger to the public if they escape their enclosures. Contact the borough office at 610-767-2131 for further details. Failure to adhere to these regulations may result in fines up to a maximum of $1,000 per offense. Please be a responsible pet owner and our community will be a healthy, more attractive and better place to live. JULY 7, 2016 || townandcountrygazette.com
“Ani-Meals On Wheels” Northampton County Receives $2,500 Grant Submitted by JIM WATERS
Knowing that seniors with pets are 36% less likely to report loneliness and have 21% fewer doctor visits, Meals On Wheels of Northampton County is proud to announce that it has received a $2,500 grant from Meals on Wheels America to support its client pet support program. Funding will be used to provide food, supplies and care for clients with pets—all of which can be financially and physically burdensome.“We are so grateful to receive this grant to ensure that pets and their owners can both receive the nutrition they need to remain living in their own home,” states Executive Director JoAnn Nenow. In total, Meals on Wheels America has granted $300,000 to 162 local Meals on Wheels programs through the Meals on Wheels Loves Pets initiative this year. Funding is made possible in part through a donation from Banfield Charitable Trust (BCT), who in October of 2015, handed over all funding and grants administration responsibilities for their popular Pet Assistance Grant Program to Meals on Wheels America.

Kutztown Group “Manifest” offers a unique combination of hip-hop and soul By JUSTIN SWEITZER
The town of Kutztown, Pennsylvania brings to mind mixed images of a typical rural community crossed with a close-knit college town. Old-order Mennonites in horsedrawn carriages can be seen on the same streets in which students anxiously hurry to class. Despite the college feel, Kutztown doesn’t seem like the kind of town to birth a talented hip-hop group, but after meeting at the college, Manifest has used the college town to earn the respect of listeners throughout the Lehigh Valley and beyond. The group, consisting of rapper Jake Supreme, singer Exodus and DJ Bray, produces a unique blend of hip hop and soul that has earned them spots supporting established acts within the genre as well as televised appearances. Their 2016 EP, entitled Speaking Into Existence Part I, features four tracks of their trademark style that sets them apart from others in the genre. The first song on the EP, Heat, opens up with Jake Supreme’s vicious verses which reinforce his selfcoronation as the underground king, because Supreme may be one of Pennsylvania’s most underrated rappers. Supreme’s bars complement the soulful voice of Exodus whose smooth vocals can be heard in the chorus of the song. Everything to Prove is Manifest’s second track which offers a powerful, confident message that is worthy of a place on any pump-up playlist, as its chorus ushers in a catchy inspirational chorus that will raise the spirits of anyone looking for some motivation. The third song on Manifest’s 2016 EP, Windowz,
slows down the pace from the outfit’s opening two tracks. The vocals of Exodus truly shine showing that the trio can tackle the soulful nature of R&B as effortless as they can capture the spirited, brash nature of rap. The final song on Speaking Into Existence, dubbed Sunrise, begins with a positive message to listeners. “This song goes out to anyone dealing with adversity in their life.” The positivity continues throughout the song with a powerfully upbeat chorus. The idea that there is always room for positivity, that every day presents a new opportunity and a blank page is expressed in the closing anthem on Speaking Into Existence Part I, which promises that each morning offers a chance to start anew. The first installment of Manifest’s 2016 EP sets high goals for Part II of the young hip hop group’s Speaking Into Existence. Manifest is already teasing a new song called Pave The Way from Part II of Speaking Into Existence. Pave The Way, along with all of Speaking Into Existence Part I are available on the group’s SoundCloud page, with additional links available on the their Facebook page.

The Moving Wall: 58,000 Veterans Will Be Honored Submitted by WILLIAM GALLAGHER
The Palmerton Veterans Memorial Committee will be bringing The Moving Wall to Carbon County. It will be displayed in the borough park in Palmerton from July 21 to 25. Opening ceremonies are scheduled at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 21.The Moving Wall is a half-size replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C. It comes complete with more than 58,000 names of those who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. The display will be manned by veterans groups of Carbon County and available 24 hours a day until mid-day July 25. Personnel will be available to assist individuals who wish to locate individual names on the wall. Pencil rubbing will be permitted. This is an opportunity for those who can't make the trip to Washington D.C. and wish to experience and feel names of loved ones and friends lost in this tragic war. The Wall is an area of respect and proper honor for that which The Moving Wall represents. Appropriate conduct is expected and required. Vietnam was the longest war in American history up until that time and perhaps the least popular and most misunderstood military action to date. Nevertheless men and women of our armed forces answered the call of their country, later to be ridiculed. The 58,000 deaths are half the number of the American causalities in World War I. In addition to the deaths recorded, there were over 350,000 causalities. Even today, many Americans still ask whether our efforts in Vietnam were necessary.
