7 Tips for a Stress-Free Summer Vacation PEACEFULMINDPEACEFULLIFE.ORG
Summer is finally upon us. It’s an exciting time; the kids are out of school, the weather is nice, and we feel inspired to have some fun and let loose. Many of us like to spend the summer making travel plans and going to exciting places with friends and family. While the idea of traveling somewhere new can be exciting, it can also be a stressful endeavor. The stress of planning the perfect vacation, down to every detail, can be onerous and hang heavy in our lives. Sometimes we even forget that the whole point of going on vacation is to relax and have fun! This week, let’s leave all the stress behind and focus on how to really enjoy your time away, no matter where you’re going or who you’re with. Here are some fun tips to keep in mind when planning your summer vacation and how you can make it the most stress-free and fun part of the summer. After all, Ralph Waldo Emerson did say, “Life is a journey, not a destination.”
1. Know what you want. Indecision can be the root of all anxiety when planning a summer excursion. Get clear on what you want, what you’re willing to spend your time and money doing, and with whom you’re willing to spend that time with. When you’re in alignment with your wants and desires, the rest of your planning will come easily. 2. Be organized. Once you have a clear view of
what you’d like your trip to look like, do the proper research to find out everything you’ll need for your vacation. 3. Be prepared. Think ahead and make a list of all the items you’ll need ahead of time. There’s nothing worse than scrambling the day before a trip trying to find the proper items you need. 4. Let go of the small stuff. Life isn’t perfect; so don’t sweat about little bumps in the way. Sometimes these detours can end up bringing the most joy in life! Detach from your “ideal” outcome and allow life to flow. 5. Be present. We spend so much time worrying about our vacations being perfect; worrying about if everyone is happy and having a good time. By being fully present to each moment you can ensure happiness and joy throughout your time away. 6. Be open. Allow yourself to be receptive to new people, cultures, and places. Be open to learning and accepting that life has brought you to this place in this moment for a reason. 7. Show gratitude. So many times we get home from travel and feel like we need a vacation from our vacation. Offering up gratitude for the time you had away can make you feel at peace with your journey.

Fifth grade students in Mr. Ulaner’s class at George Wolf Elementary School in Bath wish a Happy Retirement to school dental hygienist, Mrs. Beth Arcury, a.k.a. “The Tooth Lady.”
A Fond Farewell submitted by BETH ARCURY
Mrs. Arcury will be retiring after “almost” 24 years in the Northampton Area School District. She has been providing Dental Hygiene Services and classroom education to over 6,000 students each year throughout the Public and Non-Public schools of the District. “I would like to think that I made a good
‘dental impression,’ (no pun intended) on all the students that I have had the pleasure to see in my many years at NASD,”states Arcury. “I will definitely miss all those smiling faces!” Once Mrs. Arcury retires in June, the Dental Hygiene Services Program will be eliminated after 42 years in existence in the NASD. When we were in the market for a home loan, we knew we wanted to find a bank that understood our needs as members of the local community. That’s why we chose The Neffs National Bank. Not only do they work here, they live here too. And since opening their doors on 1923, it’s been their tradition to help neighbors like us with all of our housing needs. Keeping Kids Safe In The Digital Age www.ooma.com
Consider these shocking statistics: • American kids spend 6-9 hours per day on the Internet • 56% of children 8-12 own cell phones, and 21% of children under 8 use them So what can parents do to keep kids safe while they’re browsing? #1 CHOOSE THE RIGHT DEVICE Android and i0S offer different security features. Pick the one that is right for your child. #2 FILTER CONTENT FOR YOUR ENTIRE HOME NETWORK

Some Internet service providers offer filtering options, while others—dynamic cloud-based services like Ooma Internet Security—interface with your router and modem and protect all devices on your network, allowing you to restrict access to dangerous websites. #3 INSTALL A PARENTAL CONTROL TOOL Parental controls are comprehensive tools designed to help parents keep kids safe, but the tricky part is that they must be installed on each individual device. #4 ADJUST IN-APP SETTINGS Many apps offer parental-control settings. For example, Netflix allows parents to set up filtered profiles for kids. #5 TALK TO YOUR KIDS Technological fixes only go so far. Good communication and an open dialogue with kids about online risk concerns and privacy helps them make good decisions online. Slatington Public Library Presents Farm to Table Program submitted by WANDA OWENS
On May 17, the library hosted Liz Wagner of Cooked Row Farm and Louise Melcher of the Penn State Extension for a very educational evening. Liz Wagner is a graduate of Northern Lehigh High School who returned to the area a few years ago and started Crooked Row Farm. She told the gathering about her passion for providing local wholesome produce and farm goods to the community. Liz belongs to, Community Supported Agriculture, a
program that promotes the idea of investing in a farm before the season begins in exchange for a weekly share of produce through the duration of the season. She also has a farm market at the trailhead in Slatington on Fridays in the summer, and she supplies other local markets and restaurants throughout the growing season.Very soon, Liz will have a permanent stand at the former Wehr’s Market on route 309. Her discussion explained the nutritional value of fresh local produce and its benefit to your health. Louise Melcher is a volunteer for the Penn State Extension, and she presented a program about preserving your garden produce with water bath or pressure canning. She demonstrated the different steps of the process. There were examples of types of jars and lids, temperature of the food during processing, and getting the correct seal for safety. Liz and Louise left some very informative brochures at the library about their presentations for anyone who could not attend the lecture. Feel free to stop in at the library to obtain one. These women had a real enthusiasm for growing healthy food and preserving it in a safe way.

Help patients, honor loved ones by donating Blood with the Red Cross submitted by ALANA J. MAUGER
Before busy summer schedules set in, the American Red Cross urges eligible donors to roll up a sleeve to help ensure a sufficient supply for patients in need. Donors of all blood types are needed now to help accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving cancer treatment. Giving blood is an easy and thoughtful way to honor a loved one who has relied on blood products, to follow in the example of a family member who gives regularly or to simply help others. As a thank you, those who come out to donate May 26-30 will receive a Red Cross-branded visor, while supplies last. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Donors can then also visit redcrossblood.org/cedarfair to enter to win one of three grand prize packages for four to Knott’s Berry Farm in California or Cedar Point in Ohio.

Communities come together for Fundraiser at Diamond Fire Company supporting local families submitted by PATTY SMITH
When crisis situations happen, it is nice to know you have the support of your local communities. Ronald D'Ron Bauer, Walnutport volunteer firefighter, received the news that he had cancer. After the shock wears off, you get your bearing together and figure out how you can get through this and get better. You can no longer participate in things that you had previously done, firefighting and EMS every other weekend. With the burden of being sick, missing work, no longer able to work part time and outrageous medical expenses you wonder how they are managing. Maria Wescoe, Director of operations of Northampton Regional EMS, D'Ron's boss of his part time job came to the Diamond Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and asked if we could participate in organizing a basket social to raise money to give to this deserving family. We set the date for April 23, 2017. Diamond Fire Comapny Ladies Auxiliary of Walnutport is a small organization, but support all the local functions that are held at the bingo hall
in volunteer capacity. President, Steff Weschler, co-resident Susan Schneck, Vice President Patty Smith, Treasurer Jenn Wentz, and Secretary Patty Ingles. As the basket social was being organized and details were being worked out, another tragedy has stricken our small community. Walter Ingles, Walnutport Fire Chief, and Patty Ingles lost their son after a heart transplant, leaving his 3 children and wife. Another catastrophe in our local community, we had to help their family as well. A huge thank you to all that contributed. Professional Dental, Walnutport Door, M&T Repair, Broughal & DeVito, Harding Funeral Home, Exxon gas station in Walnutport, and Beverly Kroboth were large monetary donators. Also, Napa, Spark Orthodontics, Morning Call, Lehight Township Fire Company, Allen Township Fire Company, Northampton Regional employees and affiliates just to name a few have participated in such a worthy cause. 9 Tips for saving money on a summer vacation by Helena Oliviero, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s getting to be that time of year when many families pack their bags and head to the mountains or the beach or a make a trip to see loved ones. While summer is the most popular time to travel, relatively few people proactively seek out moneysaving options. Mike Sullivan, spokesperson for Take Charge America, a national nonprofit credit counseling and debt management agency makes the point while summer is the time to relax and have fun, it’s hard hard to enjoy yourself when money concerns are nagging you. But there are ways to save money and
still have a great summer vacation. Sullivan offers consumers these 9 tips for vacationing on a budget:

1. Establish a vacation fund. Don’t rob your emergency savings for a trip. You’ll regret it when the unexpected occurs, and potentially fall further into debt. Do consider setting up a separate savings account just for vacations if you have the budget to accommodate it. 2. Sell your stuff. If you’ve been meaning to sell that barely used treadmill or guitar, now’s the time. Earmark that cash for your vacation fund. 3. Pack two in one. If you’re unsure where you want to go, consider starting your vacation in a jump-off city with access to two destinations. For example, travel to San Francisco and take a day trip to wine country. 4. Scour group deal sites. Once you’ve selected your destination, sign up for Groupon, Living Social and other deal sites within that geography to save on meals and activities. 5. Be flexible. Most people travel on Fridays and Saturdays, but you can snag cheaper flights and hotel rates on weekdays. 6. Fly cheap. You can also save money by choosing a regional airport. It may require extra time to drive to your final destination, but it could save significant dollars. 7. Be smart with room and board. By-owner rentals and sites like Airbnb may offer cheaper rates than hotels. Moreover, renting a home gives you access to a kitchen where you can cook your meals and save money on dining. If you must stay in a hotel, pick one that offers complimentary breakfast or includes a kitchenette for preparing meals. 8. Skip the car rental. Unless you really need a car, use Uber or an hourly rental service to get around – especially if you’re staying in a hotel with a daily parking fee or are traveling to a city with a good mass transit system. 9. Dine out for lunch. Even the most frugal vacationers like to eat out every once in a while. Dine out for lunch instead of dinner to save money. You’re also less likely to splurge on expensive cocktails and wine.

cleaning has changed and how different that it was fifty years ago. During this time one sees the dry cleaner truck stop occasionally somewhere and an arm full of stuff is carried in or out, such as drapes or curtains for the windows and the throw covers for over the sofa and large living room chairs. In years back one washed and starched the lace curtains and put them in the stretcher and set them out in the sun. How one always pricked his fingers with those pointed nails in the curtain stretcher. When the rugs are taken up [from the floor] these days, they are rolled up and sent out to a cleaning place. Years before the carpet was taken up and was hung out over the wash line and struck with a rug beater. The kitchen carpet was laid out on the lawn and scrubbed with lye-soap water to get the grease out of it. Then it was draped over the picket fence in the sun.

LAUGH OUT LOUD
The stove pipe needed to be dismantled, taken out in the yard and the soot knocked out of it. Then it was ‘blackened’ before it was assembled again at the stove. Those who did this were blacker than the stovepipe when the work was complete. Today a guy comes with a truck, drives close to the cellar and takes everything apart at the furnace and uses a large vacuum that sucks everything into it. When he vacuums everything out with his electric ‘sucker’ machine, he reassembles the whole thing and one does not get dirty at all. We don’t need to do anything other than write out a check when he is ready to leave. Now there are even fellows who earn their living by going around and washing the wood trim and dusting off the wallpaper. Then they wax the floor with an electric machine [buffer]. One no longer needs to get down on his knees. How one needed to crawl around the floor and wash it up, then lay the carpet and work it under the heavy furniture. Everything is handily put in order these days. But one must work confoundedly hard to earn the money to pay these fellows for everything!
