From The Editor’s Desk. There’s this guy I know. He’s awesome, even though he might be a little rough around the edges and uses slang that doesn’t exist - like most coal crackers. From time to time I might give him a little guff about his grammar; I am still looking for someone who can explain the semantics of “Hey-nah?” (Please e-mail me, seriously). But, he’s tough, smart, talented and most importantly has values and a work ethic that I can only hope to one day live up to. This man works long hours as a machinist at a hard job and still takes time to hang out with his wife, family and dog, Rex. Years ago he taught me how to drive, first in a go-cart and then he spent many hours with me parallel parking a Dodge K-Car in a parking lot in the Heights section of Hazleton. He taught me how to swing a hammer, turn a screw, change a light bulb, check my oil, change a water pump and sand quarter panels on a car. Some of my favorite memories with this guy are sanding classic car’s fenders covered in primer with wet, fine, sandpaper on a crooked wood-floored garage with the smell of a kerosene heater

burning garage in Weatherly. His work ethic taught me what it takes to be successful. Being lazy, loafing and calling off unnecessarily would be an affront to his way of life. I’d be ashamed to not give my profession my all. I couldn’t look him in the eye if I was a liar, thief or treated my girlfriend without the respect she deserves. His name is Don Korba, he’s my Dad and my hero. I hope everyone takes a moment on Father’s Day to think of all the ways their father has shaped their lives.

JOE’S
Summer Movie
run-down The Hangover Part 2 - * * out of 4 – The original Hangover had a winning formula of raunchy humor, great cast chemistry and a Mike Tyson cameo that made it the highest grossing R-rated comedy ever. The director of the Hangover, Todd Philips, who also made the frat house-comedy Old School apparently decided not to mess with a good (profitable) thing. The wolf pack (Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms) is back for another raucous night, this time Ed Helms’ hapless character Stu is the groomto-be. There are few changes in the plot from the first Hangover, substitute Thailand for Vegas and pencil in a drug dealing monkey instead of Tyson’s purloined Tiger and you know how things are going to play out. And while this movie is sometimes
Page 13
laugh-out-loud funny, it all seems a little lazy and a little too familiar in the end. With such a strong cast, Galifianakis’ well-meaning but demented Alan being the standout, it’s a shame they weren’t given fresh material to work with. One of the highlights is Helms’ obscene take on Billy Joel’s Allentown, the hit song about the Lehigh Valley’s most populous city. Fast 5- *** out of 4 – The fifth movie in the Fast and the Furious franchise knows how to do summer action right. It has beautiful women, fast cars, fistfights and lots of explosions. You would think at 130 minutes the movie would seem bloated but director Justin Lin knows how to keep things moving along at a lightening pace. Lin, thankfully, has chosen to not concentrate on the tired street racing that the series was founded on. This entry is more of the “heist-movie” genre with chases through the ramshackle favelas of Rio De Janeiro. It never lets up off the accelerator as a DEA Agent played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Vin Diesel’s fugitive street racing character Dom face off. Fast and the Furious veterans like Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson and Jordanna Brewster round out the cast and do a good job at injecting some Fast and the Furious flavor into a new setting. If you’re looking for a great summer action film you can’t go wrong with Fast Five.

p.m. on Thursday, June 16. Quinter will discuss his experiences as a Fulbright Scholar in Switzerland. The public is invited to this free meeting at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 1933 Hanover Avenue, Allentown. Quinter’s interest in the dialect began when he heard it as a young boy at his maternal grandparent’s home in Bath. Elmo and Alice Frey spoke it frequently with family and friends that visited with them. The dialect is also similar to the Alemannic which he heard during his year as an exchange student in Switzerland several years later. In addition to teaching the dialect at KU and writing articles in the dialect, he also translates old German Script writings, drawing on his formal college training and experiences as a Standard German teacher at Parkland High School. The Pennsylvania German Friends organization meets the third Thursday of the month at the church. Parking is available in the lot across Tacoma Street; use ground floor “Office” entrance. Father's Day gift ideas for any dad (ARA) - Yes, Mad Men has ushered in a new era for the tie and its accessories, but that doesn't mean the dad in your life needs a gift that reminds him of work. This Father's Day, forget the usual standby gifts and give him something to escape from his nine-to-five. Here are three gift ideas that will be sure to make you a Father's Day hero. For the snacking dad
Is your dad a cruncher of chips, a nosher of nuts or chronic consumer of candy? This year, instead of feeding his sweet tooth, feed his meat tooth with the gift of the perfect snack: Beef Jerky. Naturally high in protein and low in fat, calories and carbs, when it comes to snacking, jerky will fill your dad up, without filling him out.
For the angling addict
If catching a lunker is on dad's weekend to-do list, then he'll enjoy some new tackle, a new fishing chair or even a cooler. Items that will get him outdoors and doing what he loves. To make the gift extra special this year, purchase a rod and reel for yourself and go fishing with him.
For the gadget guy
Whether your dad is more Inspector Gadget or James Bond, every man loves his techie tools. This Father's Day, make your dad the envy of his friends
with the Schlage LiNK System, the easy-to-install wireless home automation system that will give him total remote control of the house. No matter where he is - whether it be the office, on business travel, hitting the links or in the middle of a fishing trip - the Schlage LiNK System allows dad to use his smartphone to lock and unlock the doors, change the temperature of the house when paired with a Trane Remote Energy Thermostat, turn lights on and off, and more. Schlage LiNK can even send him text messages to notify him when family members have made their way home. Schlage LiNK is available online and at select retailers, For more information, visit link.schlage.com.

Saving the life of one dog won’t change the world, But it will change the world for that one dog
ASPEN
SEAN Bichon Frise: An adoptable dog in Whitehall Small • Senior Male Sean is an older Bichon, who ended up at the shelter when his owner passed away. He is approx. 12 to 13 years old, but still very spunky, doesn't act like an old dog. He is very friendly, seems great with people and just really needs a loving home again for his golden years. No dogs deserve to be sitting in a shelter, but the older ones really need to be in homes. If you are interested in adopting or fostering Sean, please call 610-248-7997 today. Spayed/Neutered Up-to-date with routine shots Primary color: White or Cream Coat length: Medium Sean's Contact Info Peaceable Kingdom, Whitehall 610-432-2532
Black Labrador Retriever Mix: An adoptable dog in Whitehall Large • Adult Female Aspen is a very sweet girl. She was adopted out a few years back and the owners found themselves in a situation where they just couldn't keep her so she is back at the shelter looking for her new home. She appears to be a black lab mix, really not sure what she's mixed with but she loves people, loves wagging her tail, walks nice on a leash, knows commands and would fit into any home. She has been at the shelter for quite some time and she is confused as to why because she is a very happy loving dog who just wants to share all of her love with a special person or family! Adoptions are held every Saturday from 12-3 at our shelter (1049 Macarthur Road in Whitehall across the street from the old Lehigh Valley Dairy) For more information please contact us at 610-248-7997 Spayed/Neutered • Up-to-date with routine shots • House trained • Primary color: Black Coat length: Medium Aspen's Contact Info Peaceable Kingdom, Whitehall 610-432-2532

Six Summertime Hazards for Dogs Seasonal pet health hazards should be considered during the extreme temperatures of both winter and summer. Keeping pets safe during the summer is easiest if you know what the risks are and how to manage them for your dog's safety. The dog days of summer provide lots of opportunities for fun with your dog but also bring a unique set of health hazards and risks pet owners should be aware of; including, but not limited to: dehydration, burned pads, parasite infestation, heat stroke, leptospirosis, and seasonal allergies. 1. Dehydration One of the best ways to keep your dog safe in the summer is by providing lots of cool, clean, fresh water. Consider preparing low sodium chicken broth or yogurt ice cubes, and introducing canned dog foods to increase the moisture content in your dog's diet. 2. Burned Pads Under the summer sun, asphalt on sidewalks and streets can heat to a temperature that can

burn a dog's paws. To avoid scorched paws, walk your dog very early in the morning or in the late evening when the streets have cooled off. If you must walk your dog during the day, dog booties can protect his feet. Always put your hand down on the asphalt for about thirty seconds - if you must pull your hand away because the street is too hot, it is too hot for your dog to walk on without hurting his paws. 3. Parasites Summer is the season for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes; pests which can present a minor discomfort to your dog at best and at worst may be life threatening or cause self-mutilating behaviors. Feeding your dog a high quality diet, without preservatives or chemicals will build his immune system, making him generally more resistant to parasite infestation. There are a wide variety of preventatives on the market, including chemical spot-on treatments, repellent shampoos, essential oils, and flea/tick collars; talk to your vet to see what she recommends for your dog. Cleaning your house frequently and keeping your dog well groomed will also reduce the risk of parasite infestation. 4. Heat Stroke Heat stroke is a serious risk to dog's health - in worst case scenarios, it can be fatal. You can prevent heat stroke by restricting your pet's exercise during the hottest hours of the day, by making sure he is well hydrated, providing cool places for him to relax, providing opportunities to swim, cooling mats, and by never leaving your dog unattended in the car during summer heat. Many dogs die annually in hot cars. If it's 95 Continued on Page 27

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
SOS is Serious SOS, to most this is just an old Morse Code term for an emergency, but to Palmerton students and parents, SOS means the for-mentioned and so much more. To them, SOS means Save Our Sports, a cause that was started by Tiffani Christman because she would not stand by and let all of the athletic programs get eliminated at Palmerton High School. SOS’s main goal is to raise enough money through community support to save sports for the students at Palmerton School District. Most of us wouldn’t even attempt this formidable task but Tiffani and her fellow die-hard sports fanatics will keep working hard until they reach their goal of raising $66,300. Tiffani said she has seen great response from fellow supporters, “We have close to 50 sponsors ($250 or more) and hundreds of patrons.” Sports are a great way for kids to stay out of trouble, have fun and keep active. No matter what the reason, sports programs are too important to lose. SOS
understands that in these tough economic times schools cannot meet their old budgets and things have to change. This group of people comprised of parents and students, coaches and avid sports fans in the community is trying hard to save these vital programs and should be commended for that. Sports are something a whole school, nay; the whole community can gravitate to. During the fall, high school football games can be the biggest events for teenagers on a Friday night. Whether they are playing, cheering, or supporting their teams from the stands, sports should never be eliminated from our schools. SOS is a great organization fighting for camaraderie, community and continued school spirit at Palmerton SD. It’s heart-warming to see the compassion for sports that is shared amongst such a diverse group of people. Let’s all continue to support them until they reach their goal and SOS can say YES! Donations can be made to PYWCA and mailed to Tiffani Christman, 590 Harvard Court, Palmerton, PA 18071 (indicate SOS in memo and all sports will receive credit). EDITOR’S NOTE: On Tuesday June 7th, 2011 the Palmerton School Board unanimously accepted SOS’ donation of $46,351 to restore sports programs for the Jr./ Sr. high school year 2011-2012.

Hazards for Dogs Continued from Page 18 degrees at noon and you leave your windows cracked, the temperature in your car may still rise as high as 113 degrees. If you must leave your dog in the car for any period of time, the air conditioning should stay on. Leaving a dog to die in a hot car is not just a health risk for your dog, but may be cause for animal cruelty charges in some areas. 5. Leptospirosis Leptospirosis is contracted through bodily fluids or tissue and can be transmitted through direct (as in the case of a bite or ingestion of flesh) or indirect contact (through water sources, food, etc.) with an infected animal. Stagnant waters are a common source of leptospirosis bacteria. Lepto can cause permanent health problems or death if not treated quickly. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, trembling/shaking, lethargy, anorexia, tenderness of joints and muscles, and increased water intake. If you suspect your dog has lepto, get him to a vet right away, an emergency vet if need be. There are vaccines for lepto but they do not prevent all strains and can cause significant adverse reactions. Talk to your vet about weighing the risk of infection with the risks associated with the lepto vaccine. 6. Seasonal Allergies Your dog may be allergic to one or more seasonal items, which include fleas, grass and various plants, and mold. If you suspect your dog may have seasonal allergies, is scratching and perhaps losing fur, a visit to your vet is recommended.

The BCHWA Spritz “Of Hydrogen Bondage—Why we owe it ALL to water” Water wisdom from the Bertsch Hokendauqua Catasauqua Watershed Association By Louise Bugbee Life evolved in water. We are about 60% water. NASA missions are ever seeking signs of water on other planets and the moons that orbit them. In many parts of the world, inadequate water supply is the critical social, political and economic issue. What is it about this liquid that makes it so special? The answer, in two words, is hydrogen bonding. The chemical composition of water is H2O, a molecule made of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen. Hydrogen bonds occur when hydrogen atoms of one molecule are attracted to the oxygen atom of another molecule. They give water many properties that enable life on earth to thrive. Hydrogen bonds are weak and are constantly breaking and reforming. This process gives water its fluidity in liquid formthink creeks coursing over rocks. Water is cohesive and flows freely but adheres to surfaces, making it an excellent transport medium both outside and within living organisms- think blood traveling through veins and arteries. Because it dissolves more substances than any other liquid, water is known as the universal solvent and facilitates chemical reactions in living and non-living systems-think digestion and stalactite and stalagmite formation as water drips through limestone caves. The many hydrogen bonds that link water molecules together, while individually weak, are collectively strong and absorb heat without a significant change in temperature, a quality that helps our bodies regulate internal temperatures.
This is important also for aquatic organisms. It takes a large input of energy to break hydrogen bonds giving water a high heat of vaporization, the change from liquid to vapor-think sweat. Body heat is used to vaporize the sweat and the cooling effect of evaporation prevents us from overheating. On a larger scale, this also helps to moderate the earth’s temperature. Perhaps the most intriguing effect of hydrogen bonding in water happens at the freezing point, 32o F, when the hydrogen bonds become rigid but have an open structure, making ice less dense than liquid water. Since ice floats, bodies of water freeze from the top down. The ice acts as an insulator and aquatic life beneath can flourish in spite of winter weather extremes. So, as you wander about our watershed, look for water in all its forms and remember that whether a warm humid mist, frozen solid or rippling free, it is all due to the hydrogen bond. Louise Bugbee, is a Penn State Extension Educator and member of BHCWA. Watershed meetings are held at 7:00 PM on the second Monday of each month, at the Pennsville Hotel in Lehigh Township. www.bhcwa.org

Some say it is a kind of music that is played by hillbillies up in the mountains. Most of those say that it is a very good kind of music that teaches us respect for our parents and family, our land, our country and our God. They say it is played on instruments that are most like the human voice; the fiddle, the guitar and the mandolin. There is also a big fiddle that reminds us that we should keep stamping our feet on the earth, which is where we belong. It is also played on an instrument that sounds like the braying of a mule; the banjo, to remind us that we are not so smart with all the things that we invent. The Peters’ family are very good with this music. Donald Peters and his two boys, Lynn and Larry are not Hillbillies. In fact they are descended from three very long ago Peters brothers from Germansville (but only from one of them), which is only a little hilly. Those Peters brothers many years ago were farmers from Switzerland which is hilly, so maybe these new ones are remote hillbillies. One of these nowadays Peters brothers, Lynn, is not only good with this Bluegrass music, he is also good with making a big mess, or, as the Bluegrass liking people call it, a Bluegrass Festival. Tents, musicians, food, people all scattered all over the place at the Schnecksville Fireman’s Fairgrounds. The time for this Blue hillbilly thing is July 22, 23 and 24. If you use the w’s you can find out more at www. lehighvalleybluegrassfestival.com or if you use the numbers thing you can try 610-760-1085 and speak with Lynn himself. Interpreted by: Lee W. What’s in Your Beach Bag? Dead Line
Author: Richard Sanders ISBN: 9781456533304 In Dead Line Richard Sanders offers up a multifaceted tale that hangs its hat on an oddly strange behavior known as a fugue state. And if you are wondering if such a condition actually exists, you are not alone. Wikipedia describes a fugue state “as a rare psychiatric disorder characterized by reversible amnesia for personal identity, including the memories, personality and other identifying characteristics of individuality. The state is usually short-lived (hours to days), but can last months or longer. Dissociative fugue usually involves unplanned travel or wandering, and is sometimes accompanied by the establishment of a new identity.” Basically, it is brought about by stress or a traumatic incident. As our offbeat story opens, Trish Fennelosa’s mother comes home one day to find blood all over the house and her daughter Katie missing. The prime suspect turns out to be Katie’s fifteen-year old sister Trish, who proved to be of very little help when questioned by the police investigators. In fact, Trish never said that she missed her sister and that she was sorry Katie was gone. Katie’s body was never found. However, the jury only had to deliberate for two hours and twenty-one minutes to find Trish guilty of murdering her sister. Trish receives a sentence of twenty-five years to life and until she was eighteen she was to serve part of her time at Blue Mountain Correctional. When Trish was nineteen her case was reopened and although she was not exactly exonerated, there was sufficient evidence for reasonable doubt. At twentytwo Trish’s conviction was overturned and she walks out of prison a free person. Trish eventually becomes the publisher of a very successful magazine called TrishDish that some considered its swashbuckling-brash content vulgar, shameless, coarse, libelous and scandalous. Nonetheless, this does not prevent her from receiving a sweetheart offer including editorial control from the Burgess Edwards Media (BEM) company. Just about the same time that this happens, Trish is involved in a car accident that nearly costs her life, and like her sister, no one knew what really happened. It should be mentioned that at the time of the mishap the culprit that caused the accident yelled out at Trish “I know what you did”-words, as
we will discover, will come back to haunt Trish. Shortly after the accident, Trish decides to devote an entire issue of her magazine to Indira Gandhi, India’s first woman prime minister, which did not exactly find favor with BEM. Moreover, the principals of BEM couldn’t figure out what was happening to Trish and decide to bring in one of their own editors and a former private investigator Quinn McShane, who likewise spent some time in the slammer for manslaughter- something akin to Trish’s ordeal. McShane is ordered to find out what is going on with Trish. What he discovers is that Trish holds frequent seances wherein she strongly believes she is Indira Gandhi and furthermore has everyone whom she employs to go along with her escapades. As McShane states: “She wasn’t playing, she wasn’t pretending.” Throughout all of these flights of fancy a psychoanalyst that specializes in immersion therapy is present and informs McShane that she is trying to get to the bottom as to what is going on in Trish’s mind and the cause of her fugue state episodes. Dead Line is a highly compelling and chilling read and I commend Sanders for crafting a fluid, snaky thriller of great momentum with a great deal of wit thrown in to boot. The tale succeeds in interweaving the workings of someone experiencing a fugue state in all its complexity while retaining the pageturning pleasures of a genuine thriller sucking you into its wild intrigue with its final poignant ending that will surely throw you for a loop. The primary and secondary characters are all finely drawn and in their own quirky way contribute to the momentum of the plot. In addition. Sanders skillfully uses humor and appropriate details to make each stand out. The result is a cleverly well-constructed novel that will keep you glued to your chair and begging for more. Richard Sanders worked for eleven years as an Executive Editor at Entertainment Weekly and (in two separate stints) at People Magazine and people com for twelve years. He has spent time in jail. Rehab and a psych ward and as he states, somehow became a successful editor at Time Inc. He has tried to reflect these experiences in Dead Line. He often speaks to young journalists and using himself as an example for inspiration. Some of his other McShane books include Sex Death Dream Talk, The Dead Have A Thousand Dreams, Tell no lie, We watched her die, The lower Manhattan: Book of the Dead, and The Seventh Compass Point of Death. The above review was contributed by Norm Goldman, Publisher & Editor of Bookpleasures.com

Lentz Rising Star in Revolver Competition
Team Smith & Wesson’s Josh Lentz of Northampton, won 10 of 14 stages as he dominated the field on his way to winning the Classic division title at the 20th Annual Smith & Wesson International Revolver Championship this weekend in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Leading the Classic division field from start to finish, Lentz placed 18th overall in the match with a final time of 290.89 seconds, putting him over 54 second ahead of his nearest competitor. “Josh is among the rising stars in revolver competition. Last year he posted a very strong fourth place finish in the Limited division and now he’s our IRC champion in the Classic division. I think this is the first of many title wins we’ll see from Josh,” said Ron Joslin of ICORE. LCTI Student Built House From foundation to frame, the newest house on Spruce Street in Schnecksville was built by students from Lehigh Career & Technical Institute. After two and a half years, the custom built, 2,240 sq. ft. “age in place” ranch home is finally complete and ready for visitors. TheVIP Open House for students and parents was held on Friday, June 3 from 5 – 7 p.m. Students who had a hand in completing the house were invited, along with their parents, to get a sneak peek at the home prior to its first official public open house. Students in the following programs help with the house project: Carpentry, Plumbing & Heating, Electrical Technology, Heating/ Air Conditioning & Refrigeration, Cabinetmaking & Millwork, Heavy Equipment Operations, Landscape Construction/ Environmental Design, Painting & Decorating, Drafting/Computer Aided Design, and Masonry. “We are very proud of this home and of the students who helped build it,” said Jim Geist, LCTI House Project Coordinator and Carpentry Instructor. “Students coming together to complete a full-scale, completely hands-on project is what career & technical education is all about. What better way to prepare our future workforce of carpenters, electricians, and plumbers than to have them build
a home in our community?” The public is invited to tour the home prior to the public auction on Saturday, June 18 at 10 a.m.
MOW Receives Grants Meals on Wheels (MOW) of Lehigh and Northampton Counties are pleased to announce that they have each received grants of $1,000 from the Banfield Charitable Trust (BCT) to support the Meals on Wheels pet food programs which provide pet food and related items to MOW clients. Pets play an important role in the well-being of numerous Meals on Wheels clients for the companionship they provide, as well as the extensive list of documented health benefits they offer. Recognizing that many homebound adults share their meals with their pets, BCT partnered with Meals on Wheels Association of America to help fund local pet distribution programs. With the extraordinary contribution of pet food from Philips Feed in Bethlehem and assistance provided by the Animal Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley, MOW of Lehigh and Northampton Counties have been providing pet food, free of charge, to their homebound clients since 2005. The additional money obtained from the BCT grant will be used to provide specific brands of food requested by clients, as well as pet-related items such as cat litter.

Fathers Day Health Tips For many, June can be a month to take time out of busy schedules to appreciate and celebrate the men in our lives. TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), the nonprofit weight loss support organization, offers hints and tips to keep dad healthy and active. Whether you’re a member of TOPS or simply a member of a family, use these ideas to encourage Dad to live a healthy lifestyle year-round. Give Dad the Gift of Health • Be Dad’s exercise buddy. Make an effort to exercise regularly together, and schedule it on the calendar as a reminder. Working out with a partner encourages you to motivate and hold each other accountable. • Does he like gadgets? Give him a pedometer or heart rate monitor. These tools will inspire Dad during his workouts and help him track progress and an ideal intensity level. • Help him unwind. A gift certificate for a massage will give Dad the opportunity to de-stress. Less stress is healthy for his mind and immune system. • You’re never too old to make a homemade gift. Activity coupons are a great way to inspire a healthy lifestyle. Whether you offer him a hike, yard work help, or bike ride, an activity coupon will give you time to spend with each other and get you moving

A Special “FUN”draiser When our son Owen was 2 years old, we noticed some developmental set backs and delays. We were advised by a healthcare professional to have him checked out with a suspicion that he may have autism. After several evaluations all of the doctors were in agreement that the evaluations and testing pointed to a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. We were devastated and the only thing that we could do was to learn everything that we possibly could in order to get the help that our son

A Father’s Day Feast
Celebrations typically include many indulgent meals. Use Father’s Day as an opportunity to make tasty, healthy food that the whole family can enjoy. When it comes to choosing snacks and meal options, these guidelines are easy to incorporate into Father’s Day festivities. • Start his Father’s Day out on a healthy note. Serving Dad breakfast in bed not only shows that you appreciate him, but it also sets the tone for a healthy day. It may even inspire healthy breakfasts throughout the year. Oatmeal, fruit salad, cottage cheese, and scrambled eggs are examples of some delicious, hearty breakfast foods. • Have a heart-healthy cookout. Does your dad consider himself a “grill master?” Get creative with
food choices to make the meal healthier. Turkey dogs, veggie burgers, buffalo burgers, and chicken are great options. Look for packages with a higher percentage of lean meat. If beef is more appealing, choose meat that is labeled “choice” or “select.” It also never hurts to throw some vegetables on the grill. • Is he nuts about snacks? Almonds, walnuts, and hazelnuts pack a lot of nutrition, including healthy fats, protein, Vitamin E, Omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber. Suggest to Dad that he might want to consider swapping a handful of nuts for the traditional bag of chips. Visitors are welcome to attend their first TOPS meeting free of charge. To find a local chapter, view www.tops.org or call (800) 932-8677.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ I CAN SLOW DOWN YOUR ELECTRIC METER…LEGALLY…AND SAVE YOU 8% TO 18% ON YOUR ELECTRIC BILL! PowerwoRx-e3 PowerwoRx-e3 (Pe3) provides a Whole-House Energy System for the best possible energy savings and protection based upon a unique patented technology providing three key benefits: Energy Savings (e1), Equipment Protection (e2), Electrical Noise Filtration (e3)
Energy Savings
Pe3 provides Energy Savings by reducing the power drawn from the utility by storing in its capacitors otherwise lost electricity caused by the inductive motors in the home. Some examples of inductive motors are air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, pool pumps, vacuum cleaners, furnace blower motors, fans, etc. The technology applied to Pe3 supplies that stored electricity back to inductive loads, thus causing decreased demand from the utility, thereby using less electricity. The process is called power factor optimization. Power Factor is the percentage of electricity delivered to a house and used effectively, compared to what is wasted. A 1.0 power factor means that all the electricity is being compared to what is wasted. A 1.0 power factor means that all the electricity is being used effectively for its purposed. However, most homes in America today have a .77 power factor or less. This means that 77% of the electricity that is coming through the meter (home or business) is being used effectively. The other 23% is being wasted by your inductive load. With a low power factor, the utility has to deliver more electricity to do the same work. Pe3 increases that power factor in most cases to .97 or .98, thus increasing the effective use of the electricity and lowering usage.
Equipment Protection
Pe3 provides Spike/Surge Suppression, a feature that protects appliances and electronics (TV’s, stereos, computers, DVR’s, security systems, wireless phones, florescent lamps, and other equipment) from voltage spikes can come from many different sources such as noisy equipment (like motors), power fluctuations, static electricity, and lighting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PowerwoRx e3 work in any home? Yes, as long as you have a circuit breaker panel with breaker switches and not the old screw in type fuses, the unit will work on any single-phase electric application for homes. If you say “yes” to only two or more of the following then you could be saving a significant amount of money on your electric bill right now! Is your home over 2,500 square feet? Is your central air conditioner or heat pump unit 3 years or older? Do you use an air conditioner regularly? Do you have a pool? Do you have a well? Hot tub or Jacuzzi? Is your washer/dryer not EnergyStar rated? Is your refrigerator/freezer not EnergyStar rated? Is your dishwasher not EnergyStar rated? Do you have more than one refrigerator or freezer? Is your forced air furnace 3 years or older? Do you have a number of appliances in your home? Will Pe3 affect any of my appliances and their normal use? If anything, your motors will run about 10% cooler, which is good for a motor because heat is the enemy of a motor. Is Pe3 tested and approved by independent labs? Yes, the Pe3 is UL listed and tested. Also, the technology is recognized by the US Department of Energy. PowerwoRx-e3 is a unique application of proven technologies. It provides your home or business with the electrical power conditioned capabilities previously available only to the largest facilities and installations. Pe3 is easy to install and provides immediate benefits. It provides power factor correction, surge and spike suppression and noise reduction in one cost-effective and maintenance-free package. Homes and businesses contain many electronic devices that are sensitive to surges. Nearby lightning can create an energy surge that enters your property and destroys valuable equipment. On a smaller scale, circuit noise (from hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, etc.) effects the performance of audio systems, computers, home entertainment systems, and the picture clarity of TVs. Pe3 protects the customer’s property from all such power disruptions. At the same time, it saves energy on air conditioners, refrigerators, pumps, and fans. Pe3 improves equipment performance and prolongs equipment life. Is Pe3 easy to install? We recommend installation by an electrician. The unit comes with complete installation instructions. It installs in about 20-30 minutes. How long with Pe3 last? It has a predicted lifespan of over 20 years.

A Little “How do you do?” from the NLEC!
The Northern Lehigh Events Committee Inc. (NLEC) would like to take a moment to say “How do you do?!” We have gone through some changing in the last year and we would like to say hello again to the Northern Lehigh community! In August of 2010 our previous president left the committee to pursue other dreams and while she has been missed the parade must go on, so we elected a new President – Laura Stauffer, Vice President Linda Steets and PR Manger Chris Craig. Our Treasurer – Tammy Filchner and Secretary – Jacque Schieb stayed on to keep the parade going as well. This core group is always looking for fun, motivated, happy people that are interested in volunteering to keep the annual Halloween Parade alive. So throughout the last year the NLEC has heard some grumbling that the NL Halloween Parade wasn't going to continue... Well, that's not true at all! The Halloween Parade will march on as long as we have support, via volunteers, fund raising and a community interest. So rest assured, there will be a parade in 2011... Saturday October 29th, 2011 to be exact! The Northern Lehigh Events Committee is also
starting to look for our Grand Marshals for the 2011 parade. We are again holding our King and Queen Contest for the area Middle School Students. The King and Queen get to ride directly behind the Color Guard and open the parade as our Grand Marshals. They each receive a crown/tiara and sash to commemorate their reign as Halloween King and Queen. For more information you can visit www.nlhalloweenparade.com. If anyone is interested in participating in this event or in volunteering with the NLEC at any of our events including the NL Halloween parade, please give us a call at 484-265-1028, email us at nlparade@yahoo.com or visit us on the web at www.nlhaloweenparade.com. The not so new, but new Northern Lehigh Events Committee Inc. board would like to thank you for your support and we will see you in October!
Happy Birthday! Paige Stitzel - 12 on June 29th Davyn Hankee - 5 on July 5th
