From The Editor’s Desk. The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. - Thomas Jefferson Right off the bat I have to let you know that I am biased when it comes to newspapers. I have a degree in journalism, love writing and am a huge news geek. I read the paper daily, sometimes two papers – a local one and the New York Times if I have enough free time. I think that being informed of local and national events and politics is invaluable and, more than that, I enjoy reading well-written articles. The reason I’m letting loose with all of my pronewspaper rhetoric this month is because of a bill that was introduced to the PA legislature in May. House Bill 633 will end the decades old law requiring municipalities to publicly post legal notices, including posts to bid on jobs. I understand budget restraints, but mandating that these notices be posted is not a government handout to newspapers

as some of the bills proponents have tried to frame it. The law didn’t pass last month, but if it had it would have allowed legal notices to be posted online as opposed to print. The bill has since been pulled off the voting schedule to add amendments and will be up for a vote again sometime after June 21st. If it passes it will all but put many small publications out of business and make even the big dailies lay off some of their already dwindling staff. It will be a coup de grace against a unique industry whose purpose is to serve the public interest and keep tabs on what your elected officials are up to. This legislation will deny many people, namely the elderly who aren’t computer savvy, access to public information. For this reason the AARP joined PA newspapers in opposing the bill. The failure of Bill 633 will be a victory for the newspapers and for government transparency. If it passes it could prove disastrous to the fragile, nearly extinct species newspapers are becoming. Papers were once giant slayers. Think of Woodward and Bernstein’s Washington Post articles that dethroned a President by exposing him as a liar and criminal. Consider all of the great American writers like Norman Mailer, Hunter Thompson and Ernest Hemingway who began as reporters. Sure, the Internet gives us unlimited access to information. But, we’re sacrificing quality for quantity. If you are already a newspaper enthusiast I’m preaching to the choir. If not, read one of NY Times reporter Anthony Shadid’s pieces on the Middle East and compare it to the quality of most online journalism. It’s more than worth the two-dollar cover price to read that level of reporting and analysis. Perhaps it’s too late to save newspapers. I sure hope not, because the death of the American newspaper will be a blow to responsible journalism and thus a well-informed public.

Travel tips for a great family getaway (ARA) - After the long, cold winter, spring marks the beginning of a new season - family travel season. Recent surveys point to more Americans planning to take family vacations in 2011, especially to domestic destinations - 35 percent of adults plan to increase their travel this year, according to a Travelocity survey. Even though parents handle most of the vacation planning, kids have their own ideas about what constitutes a great trip. In fact, 85 percent of children ages 6 to 14 say that it is very important to choose a vacation spot where they can spend time with their entire 4571 CLOVER HILL CIRCLE SERVING THE GREATER LEHIGH VALLEY

family, according to a recent survey by ORC International. And most children - 93 percent - also think it's important for their parents to take a break. They want to see their parents disconnect from their laptops and mobile devices and focus more on family time while vacationing. "As families look at their vacation options, they should focus on two things in a destination: first, a place where they receive a great value for their money, and second, a place to spend quality time together," says Emily Kaufman, founder of The Travel Mom (www.thetravelmom.com). "Whether it's a quick weekend over spring break or a longer trip over summer vacation, families ought to maximize their vacation time while getting the most for their travel dollar." As families look for a break from the usual routine without breaking the bank, Kaufman offers the following tips: Look for great values - There's no question that families want great value from their getaways. Look for a hotel or resort where you are offered amenities on top of the room, such as free WiFi. Great Wolf Lodge (www.greatwolf.com), for Continued on Page 34

What’s in Your Beach Bag? The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff And The Death Of Trust

Author: Diana B. Henriques Publisher: Times Books (Henry Holt Company) ISBN: 978-0-8050-9134-2 The field of narratives about Bernard (Bernie) L. Madoff during the past few years is quite crowded with a number of books and articles examining varying aspects of his devious Ponzi crime. However, I would be very hard- pressed to find another book that is as meticulous, insightful and comprehensive as Diana B. Henriques's The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff And The Death Of Trust. What Henriques has brought to the table is a layered account of an individual whom she fittingly describes as someone who is not “inhumanly monstrous” but rather someone who is “monstrously human.” As she most perceptively explains: “He was greedy for money and praise, arrogantly sure of his own capacity to be able to pull it off, smugly dismissive of skeptics-just like anyone who mortgaged the house to invest in tech stocks, or tapped the offlimits college fund to gamble on a new business, or put all the retirement savings into a hedge fund they didn't understand, or cheated a little on the tax return or the expense account of the spouse. Sound familiar? And her final sage words of the book brilliantly wraps it all up when she states that the most enduring lesson of the Madoff scandal is: “In a world full of lies, the most dangerous are those we tell ourselves.” In this case it is the lies Madoff told himself and those of the investors who likewise fooled themselves. For Madoff, he sustained his belief of infallibility by convincing himself that he could get away with his Ponzi crime, while his investors ignored the fact that he really didn't have any investment earnings to pay his clients. They turned a blind eye to the reality that his investment acumen was increasingly implausible and that his operations lacked transparency. Furthermore, they simply ignored or dismissed the rumblings that were prevalent among certain hedge fund managers that Madoff's returns were too consistently good to be credible.

Moving at a brisk pace, Henriques packs in many intriguing facets concerning Bernie Madoff including how he was able to successfully create the aura of a genius investment manager- one that was the most exclusive that never failed to deliver the returns his investors expected of him, that is, until the party was over and the music stopped. After all, didn't he bring them along profitably through bad and good times beginning with the tumble of the stock market in 1962, the doldrums of the 1970s, the 1987 crash and its rocky aftermath? However, no one knew or suspected that he was borrowing money from one of his very wealthy clients to replenish the accounts of others in his early years, and moreover, no one was aware that he was squeezed by a rash of withdrawals in the late 1980s.

by packing a healthy lunch for your travelers. Sandwiches, pretzels and carrot sticks are a few options that can save a family of four around $25 versus one lunch on the go. Remember the Essentials! Often when leaving for a vacation, we all get that feeling… am I forgetting something? Chances are one thing from our checklist will be forgotten or left by the front door. You can save money by preparing and packing ahead of time. Don’t forget the sun block, flip-flops, beach towels and toothpaste as these items are almost always marked up in tourist locations. Have a Backup Plan! What’s worse then getting to your summer destination ready for fun in the sun and it rains the entire time? Not having a backup plan can cause stress, create chaos and cost a lot of money. Research your travel destination and plan for indoor activities that are within your budget, that way you will not get caught off guard when the inevitable happens. Unexpected Travel Destinations Staying Close to home for a day-trip this summer? Check out these local attractions! Hike the Appalachian Trail. Challenge Yourself on June 4th For some the Kreidersville Covered Bridge Challenge 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk will be tough; for others it will be tougher. Few runners who ever ran in the Kreidersville Covered Bridge 5K over the last decade called it a breeze. Given the terrain around the Kreidersville Covered Bridge, 100 Covered Bridge Road, Northampton, including the hills left from the erosion of the meandering Hokendauqua Creek, the new 2011 10K race course adds some distance to the fun. With so

many runners looking for half- and full-marathon experiences, try the KCB Challenge for a worthy training day. Those who are looking for a 10K or a 5K with a kick, try the KCB Challenge for a real epiphany. And for those who say, Ano way, Im not ready for that, runners and walkers at all levels have always finished the KCB 5K with the most self-congratulatory looks of accomplishment on their faces. And well deserved. The KCB Challenge rewards are not just in the finish but in the process. The 10K and 5K courses are front-end loaded with a winding mile and a half hill which provide vistas of both the Lehigh Valley and the Blue Mountain. In the valley runners enjoy some truly picturesque rural farmland, barns,

pastures and horse farms its like running through a calendar photo. The 10K has five creek crossings over two historic bridgesBthe Kreidersville Covered Bridge, which is the last historic covered bridge in Northampton County, and Old Stone Bridge, a multi-arched stone bridge which looks like something out of King Arthur tales. Both 10K and 5K runners start and finish by dashing through the 1839-built KCB, a lot more tired the second time through but undoubtedly exhilarated at the finish. The distance on both courses has been verified courtesy of Hanover Engineering Associates, Inc. Northampton Area High School seniors, Taylor Emmons and Miranda Miller, under the direction of Digital Arts teacher Mrs. Tara Gray volunteered to prepare a video for the KCB which includes some footage of the 10K and 5K courses as run by NASH track team members. You can view the video at http://youtu.be/ugVE5aXzugU . Erica Biery, local glass artist and friend of the KCB, designed the Agold@ and Asilver@ glass medals for the first and second place winners in each age group/gender. These unique artistcreated awards are made exclusively for the KCB Challenge. Awards will also be given to the overall male and female winners of both the 10K and 5K. The first 150 runners will receive a complimentary Tshirt. All profit from the KCB Challenge is used to preserve the Kriedersville Covered Bridge. Details about the race, maps of the courses, photos of the course, the shirt and the exclusive glass art awards can be found at the KCB Challenges online registration website at www.active.com. Find a flyer for registration by mail at the website for the KCB: www.kreidersvillecoveredbridge.org. Thanks to our sponsors Lafayette Ambassador Bank, ProtoCAM, and Reichel Funeral Homes Inc. who make it possible to keep registration costs down and encourage joining the KCB Challenge on June 4th!

Beach Bag Continued from Page 27 Henriques also sheds some very interesting light concerning Madoff's family background, where he grew up, how he started in the investment business, who initially gave him his first break, when did he start his Ponzi scheme, who were his early investors and did they ever suspect that he was running a Ponzi scheme, who knew about it and who should have known about his shenanigans, how was he able to attract thousands of rich and powerful investors including lawyers, accountants, European boutique banks, offshore hedge funds, wealthy European families, Hollywood celebrities, charitable organizations, endowments, educational institutions, several foundations and investment committees that all came to trust Madoff with their vasts sums of money. In addition, Henriques exposes his feeder funds and how much was he paying them as finders' fees, were any of his family members involved in the crime, the incompetency of the SEC, what kind of life did he live after he had accumulated considerable wealth, and how was he able to convince some very sophisticated investors that his investment strategy was based on something he described as a “split-strike conversion” that managed to grow endlessly large. In this short review it is very difficult to convey all of the gripping lowdown Henriques shares with us, however, there is no doubt that with every page you will feel, as I have, a new clarity about how Madoff was able to pull off his Ponzi scheme for so many years and rightfully earn Henrique's title of him: “The Wizard Of Lies.” Diane B. Henriques is the author of The White Sharks of Wall Street and Fidelity's World. She is a senior financial writer for The New York Times.

Henriques is a Polk Award winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist and she has won several awards for her work on the Times's coverage of the Madoff scandal and was part of the team recognized as a Pulitzer finalist for its coverage of the financial crisis of 2008. Travel Tips Continued on Page 26 example, includes passes to its waterpark with your stay. Searching online is a great way to find these kinds of deals and discounts. Think outside the weekend - If you have flexibility in your travel dates, many destinations have flexibility in their rates. Consider traveling midweek or during nonpeak weekends. You'll find great room rates and even some economical value-added packages. Pick a place with plenty to do - Experts say that for each hour you drive to get to your destination, it should be able to offer at least a half day of activities. Be sure there are a good variety of indoor activities too, so your vacation isn't ruined because of bad weather. Remember the whole family - Not only should your destination have lots to do, it should offer something for everyone. Don't forget - this could even include easy access back to the room or a quiet spot for nap time. Multifaceted destinations, like Great Wolf Lodge, offer a variety of activities for every age - from the indoor waterpark to the spa to nightly story time. With activities for varying age ranges in mind, you can be assured that your decision is virtually fail-safe. Kaufman reminds parents that above all, don't forget the family in family vacation. The most important thing to remember in planning is that it's all about spending quality time together with the ones you love.

Summer Movie Run-Down THOR - ** ½ out of 4 –Following on the heels of Iron Man and its sequel released the past two summers Marvel Studios continues it’s tradition of solid summer movies. While not quite as fun as the Iron Man movies Thor is a good popcorn flick with plenty of action and great fight scenes. Leading man Chris Hemsworth lacks Robert Downy Jr’s charisma and charm but turns in a better-thenexpected performance as the banished Norse God. Anthony Hopkins is great as Odin, Thor’s father, but Natalie Portman’s talents are squandered in the generic love interest role. While there isn’t much character development and the romantic subplot is thin and underdeveloped if you’re looking for mindless summer escapism you can’t go wrong with Thor.

Coming Soon… The Tree of Life, Terrence Malick is one of the best working directors today.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides * ½ out of 4- The fourth installment of an already tired franchise. Luckily the convoluted and ridiculous mythology of the first two sequels is more or less done away with as well as the boring romantic subplot of non-pirates Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom. This entry in the franchise rests squarely on Johnny Depp’s sashaying, quipping, Keith Richards imitating shoulders. Depp is more than game and Penelope Cruz is good as Depp’s love interest and nefarious Blackbeard’s daughter. It’s a shame they wasted the great Geoffrey Rush, fresh off of the award winning The King’s Speech, in a shallow one-note role of Barbossa who is now contracting with the King’s Navy. Ditto with the usually amazing Ian McShane who is slumming it as Cruz’s father and supernatural pirate Blackbeard. This one is for fans of Depp’s flamboyant Jack Sparrow only.

Antique Wagon & Tractor Show Saturday, June 11 Experience old-time farm life at the historic 1756 Troxell-Steckel Farm, 4229 Reliance Street in Whitehall Township, during the Lehigh County Historical Society's "First Annual" Tractor & Wagon Show. The show, featuring vintage wagons, tractors, farm tools, and much more is on Saturday, June 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The show will feature unique exhibits of neverbefore-displayed farm vehicles and vintage equipment. Visitors can discover the world of antique horse-powered farm tools, including a rare early wooden plow and a one horse-power treadmill. A horse walked on this treadmill, providing power to operate farm equipment. Also included in the exhibit will be some of the early tractors that eventually replaced farmers' horse-drawn equipment. This is an event for the whole family. Children can explore farm life as they try on vintage clothing and experience old-fashioned chores such as churning butter, carrying water, and hunting for eggs. Old-fashioned Pennsylvania German games will send them running across

the barnyard, and indoors they can experience early crafts. Tours of the historic 1756 Pennsylvania German Troxell-Steckel Farmhouse, led by Museum Educators in vintage clothing, will offer visitors the opportunity to step into the farm-wife's life. Discover how the fruits of the fields were transformed into food for the table, yarn for clothing, remedies for healing, and much more. Event admission is FREE to Lehigh County Historical Society members; future members pay only $6 for adults, $3 for children. The historic Troxell-Steckel Farm is located at 4229 Reliance Street in the Egypt section of Whitehall Township. Our house rules Slices of Life By: Jill Pertler The title of this column may lead you to believe If you step on it and it isn’t supposed to be I entertain a lofty perception of my house – as in on the floor, pick it up and put it away. This my house rules the universe. While that may be is called responsibility. It is also steeped in logic. true (but not really), the “rules” cited in the title You are closer to the floor than Dad or Mom and refer to a noun, not a verb. bending over is much easier for you. Rules: Directives involving the correct time to go to bed, the necessity of frequent tooth brushing and the value of vegetables. In other words, the things every kid detests. I penned the following tidbits of wisdom during my early, tadpole days of parenting (before I’d earned my legs), hoping they’d bring order to the universe, or at least to our dinner table. Then I framed them. I actually believed the framing would increase the likelihood my kids would read and abide. What can I say? I entered parenthood with a blatant sense of optimism and a handy dandy set of house rules. I’m proud to say both are still intact. Be kind – to yourself and each other. If you can’t expect kindness within your own home and family, what can you expect from the rest of humanity? Remember, if the world were a kinder place, we wouldn’t need so many rules. Always tell the truth. Except when it will make someone feel bad. Do not tell someone they look tired or old or fat, especially if that person is your mom. Respect others and things. This goes double if the things you are respecting belong to your brother. Removing items from your brother’s bedroom without his permission does not constitute respect. Be safe. If your activity – in any way, shape, or form – could take an eye out or anger your brother, it is not safe. (See the respect others example above.) If you use it or play with it, put it away when you’re done. Putting something away does not mean tossing it in the general direction of where it is supposed to go. Nor does it mean pushing it under the couch or hiding it behind a pillow so it is out of sight.

No running, yelling or throwing in the house. Or throwing up, for that matter (if you can help it). Sit on the furniture. No climbing or jumping. If your dad and I wanted you to own a trampoline, we would have bought you one. Take your shoes off at the door. They’ll be easier to find tomorrow morning when you are late for the school bus. It’s okay to be angry, but don’t touch someone when you are mad at them. You’ll only be tempted to pinch. Or hit. Or both. Or worse. Don’t stay angry. In general, it is a waste of time. Everyone makes mistakes. If you do (and you will) say you’re sorry. A spoken apology can work wonders, and its power multiplies if your words come from the heart and you mean what you say. Try to be forgiving when someone else makes a mistake. Even (and especially) if that person is your mom. Say your prayers every night. And morning. And whenever else you need a good ear. Attitude is a window into your soul. Keep yours positive. Remember, I am constantly looking through your window. (And like all other moms, I do have eyes in the back of my head.) No matter what, Mom and Dad will always love you. I saved the best for last because this is the most important rule of all. Never, ever forget that. Translation One of the first green plants that we can see in the fields in spring is the dandelion, which some ‘Dutch’ people call ‘Pissebett’ (from Fr: pissenlit). When you have warm, sunny days, you become hungry and eager to get a basket and knife and go down to the ‘Summer Hill’ to find some dandelion. On Holy Thursday we certainly must have a good meal with dandelion and hot bacon dressing. When we see the dandelion flowers in the lawn, we surely know spring has arrived. Soon we will see the women running around the lawn and digging out the dandelion and complaining that there are so many there. If those women had not left so many go to seed last year, then the lawn would not be so full of dandelion this year. It sure can give a lot of blisters when there so many dandelions to dig out! And if we mow the lawn one day, by golly, the next day we can again see more dandelion flowers. They are hard to eradicate. [When the plant is finished blooming, the flower becomes fuzzy and the wind will carry it away. We now have dandelion from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The dandelion flowers are mostly seen in spring but we can see them up to fall.] Eating dandelion is good for one’s health. Years age some people carried a dried dandelion root in their pocket and gnawed off a piece three times a day for their health. Others cooked the root to make a tea which was believed to be good Continued on Page 46

Touch of Dutch Continued from Page 44 for the nervous system. Years back most people had just dried and canned food to eat over winter and when spring came, everyone had a chance to eat something that would give them what we now call vitamins. It was also believed that eating dandelion would help purify the blood. When we were young, the children always played with the dandelion flowers. We split open the ends of the stems and made them into chains. When young girls would smell the flowers to the point where their noses became yellow, that was a sign that they were in love. Dandelion flowers are very pretty and we should appreciate them more than we do.

Lehigh Township Historical Society DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THE MAUSER MILL COMPANY IN TREICHLERS? In the 1920 volume, "History of Northampton County," you can take a glimpse at the cozy village known as Kuntzford. Later, it was changed to Treichlers from the name, Henry Treichler. In 1794, the Treichlers Mill was built by David Kuntz. Through the years, the mill was rebuilt and made larger. In 1886, the mill was purchased by Jacob Mauser and the Mauser Mill Company was established. In 1938, the Treichlers Mill was remodeled and increased capacity. The following local areas had plants and manufactured flour: In 1892, the Laurys Mill was purchased. In 1902, the company was incorporated and this mill burned down in 1937. In 1905, the Northampton Mill was purchased. In 1914, Danielsville purchased a small flour mill and it was sold in 1928. The following local areas were distribution warehouses: In 1911, the Hazleton plant was purchased and was sold in 1926. 1916, the Palmerton plant was purchased. In 1918, the Allentown plant was purchased and burned down in 1926 and then rebuilt. The motto of the Mauser Mill Company was "For Better Bread and Cakes Use Mauser's Flour." Brands of flour were Special Hi-Gluten, Gibraltar,

Oven Buster, Breadmaker, Whole Wheat Flour, King Pin, Queen's Best, Fairy Kist, Full Bloom, and Rising Star. In the early years, flour was packed in 100 lb. cotton sacks. Later, paper sacks were used in 100 lb., 50 lb., 25 lb., 10 lb., and 5 lb. quantities. By-products of the mill were bran, standard middlings, and flour middlings. Products were packed in burlap sacks and used for animal feed.

The products were shipped by truck and box cars. Later, items were shipped in bulk by truck and railroad hopper carts. Flour was shipped by truck and railroad box cars. In the 1950s, most of the flour was shipped in bulk by trucks and railroad airslide hopper cars. The raw material wheat was shipped to the mill via truck, railroad box cars, and later, by railroad hopper cars. In 1942, during the flood of the Lehigh River, the water flooded the basement area of the mill and caused the operation to cease. In those days, the mill generated its own power with generators run by a large water wheel with water fed through the Lehigh Canal. The flood of 1955 caused less damage. In June of 1966, through a trading of shares, the mill was purchased by Nebraska Consolidated Mills Company. Later in the 1970s, the name was changed to Conagra Inc. with its corporate headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. The company is in operation today and is the biggest flour manufacturer in the United States. Written by Donald Kuntz

Call RON BIECHY (610) 767-7193 Graduation Friendship We’re graduating, and we know Our lives will be different and new; We’re going out into the world, Our goals and dreams to pursue. But one thing will never, ever change, As we go our separate ways; The friends we’ve made in school will be Our friends for all our days.

The special ties and attachments we’ve made, These bonds will never be broken; We’ll continue to feel that special bond, Though words may not be spoken. So it’s not "goodbye," but rather "farewell;" I’ll see you again, my friend. Your friendship means a lot to me, And it will never end. By Joanna Fuchs

THE PROBLEM.

THE SOLUTION.

All new and existing masonry substrates are susceptible to water damage and, even if repaired, will continue to deteriorate if not protected.

ChimneySaver is the first water repellent specifically developed to protect masonry chimneys from severe weather conditions.

Protect Your Investment

There are approximately 40 million masonry chimneys in North America and the most common problem with these structures is water penetration. Water causes over a billion dollars in damage annually in the form of staining, loss of insulation value, freeze-thaw damage, deterioration, and ultimately structural failure.

Severe spalling and deterioration is caused by water penetration.

Efflorescence stains caused by water penetration and leaching salts are unsightly and add to deterioration.

Water penetration and freeze/thaw damage result in loss of insulation value and lead to structural failure.

Use On All Masonry Surfaces

Not just for chimneys, ChimneySaver® water repellent is the ideal choice for protecting all residential and commercial above-grade masonry. ChimneySaver is the best solution for a variety of exterior masonry applications including patios, walkways, pool decks, and wall systems.

ChimneySaver is a WATER REPELLENT - not a water sealer. The difference could save you hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars in repairs because sealers can actually damage masonry. Unlike waterproofing sealers that remain on the surface, ChimneySaver penetrates deep enough to protect masonry from destructive water penetration while maintaining the structure’s vapor permeability.

Superior Technology ChimneySaver contains patented siloxanes small enough to penetrate most masonry pores up to 1/4” or more. These special siloxanes form strong bonds with the silica in masonry and concrete. Because of this bonding process, one application of ChimneySaver provides up to ten times the water repellent protection of typical sealers while maintaining the masonry’s breathability. Moisture from a variety of sources is always present in masonry and concrete. Sealers and silicone coatings form a water resistant surface film which traps water vapors inside. If these vapors cannot escape, they will contribute to spalling, scaling, deterioration, and freeze-thaw damage. ChimneySaver is 100% vapor permeable - a nonfilm-forming water repellent that penetrates and lines masonry pores.

100% Breathable • 10 Year Guarantee • No Darkening of Masonry
