From The Editor’s Desk. Joe Korba You are currently holding our annual Men’s Edition in your hands. It’s always a fun issue to put together as being male is something I can unequivocally say I’m an expert on. Heck, I was born into it. Regardless, It’s really easy to let this type of theme issue devolve into hackwork – there are so many ‘men’s interest” type magazines on the newsstand that you always have to think of a way to set yourself apart from the Maxim and Men’s Health-type of features. Luckily for us we have a really awesome niche – being hyper-local. We reached out to area men in our readership and asked them manly questions and got some surely masculine answers. Stuff like favorite sports bars and whether you prefer a jacked-up 4-wheel drive or a sport’s car. It just so happens that our Grungy Grill contest (check it out on facebook) is coinciding with our Men’s Edition as well, which, thematically is kind of perfect. Clichés are interesting things. I always try to steer away from easy generalizations, as they tend to make for bad writing and illogical thinking. I like to think that I transcend most

of the “man” stereotypes, but every time my fiancé and I get lost because I refuse to let her bring her annoying GPS (After all, I know the way!) or have a moment of My Camping buddy. My Dad, self-realization Don Korba, and I relaxing at our as I’m laying campsite, circa mid-1980s. in my recliner on a lazy-Sunday afternoon, Yuengling-in-hand, watching the afternoon Major League Baseball game on TBS I come to the conclusion that, perhaps, some stereotypes have a basis in reality. Well, as always, I hope you guys enjoy this one. In closing I wanted to say Happy Father’s Day to my Dad, Don Korba, the coolest guy around. The Men’s Issue: Q&A with some of the Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette Readers Finest! Nice Guys, Business Leaders, Average Joes, even a few Town & Country Gazette Staffers. We asked & they answered! See what the men of our area rate as their Best of the Best.
I try to stay in shape, and love the variety that nutrition loaded protein shakes blended with various frozen fruits provide. (I use Vi-Shake) My workout always includes weight lifting. Whether a person eats too much food, not enough food, "bad" fast food , or clean/lean food , weight training is KEY.A person must require their muscle to work harder than what is required for daily activities , if they expect to have an "above average" body. ~ Brian Miller, 90 Day Challenge There’s nothing like watching the game(s) at local sports bars with friends and family. The best spot in my opinion is Four Fellas in White Haven, PA, especially to watch (Red Sox) Baseball, even if it's a Mets Bar! ~Joe Korba, Town & Country Gazette Editor The Ironton Rail Trail is my favorite place to go for a bike ride. Boy there are so many places I like to bike around here. ~James Benetzky After a long day at the office, I head to watch my daughter play sports to unwind. ~Eric Heiney There’s nothing like watching the game(s) at local sports bars with friends and family. The best spot in my opinion is P.J. Whelihan's at the Walbert, especially to watch football. ~ Tony Pisco, Town & Country Gazette Art Director My favorite spot to see a good flick is AMC Tilghman 8. I prefer horror over any other. ~ Tyler Trumbauer, Staff Writer

The Men’s Issue: Facebook Poll!
We decided to have a little fun with our online Facebook community and let the guys of the Blue Mt. Town & Country Gazette area weigh in for this issue. We asked a few poll questions, and here are the results! Compiled by Alice Wanamaker Results from our Facebook poll showed that the men of the Blue Mt. Town & Country Gazette area are split 50/50 on musical preference between Rock and Country. They were also tie in their preference of vehicles with 50% preferring a pick up truck and 50% going for a sports car. Hands down 100% of our male readers prefer seeing a movie at the drive in during the summer months over heading to an air conditioned theater indoors. Surprised? Not really, with two of the oldest (and best) drive-ins right here in our backyard, this facebook pool result seems quite accurate. When it comes to what they prefer to see on women, the guys kind of surprised with 66% of our male readers said a little black dress is sexier than jeans and t-shirt. Want to weigh in our next Facebook poll? Find us at Town & Country Gazette and follow us on Twitter @TCGazette

Gifts that Sizzle For the man who has everything, give dad the gift that brings the whole family together. With the grilled goodness of Omaha Steaks' Favorite Gift package, he'll have everything he needs for an incredible feast - from extra tender Filet Mignons to bold, beefy Top Sirloins and savory sides. Grill Up Some Good Times An icy beverage, the sun beating down and the smoky smell of a sizzling cut of meat - these are a few of dad's favorite things. Pop Culture's Most Heroic Men
By Joe Korba This being our annual Men’s Edition, I thought it only appropriate to include a list of the manliest men ever committed to film (or television). I excluded literary heroes like Allan Quartermain, John Carter, and Sherlock Homes for the sake of brevity, even if many of them have starred in movie adaptations. I pulled from my own knowledge of Caption: If you don’t know who this is you’re not a real man. action films and television as well as picked my cadre of geeky friend’s brains for this list. I hope you guys enjoy, and are inspired by, the testosteronefueled adventures of these alpha-men. 10. John McClane (portrayed by Bruce Willis. First Appearance Die Hard, 1988) 9. Reggie Bannister (portrayed by Reggie Bannister, First Appearance Phantasm, 1979) 8. The Doctor (currently portrayed by Matt Smith, First Appearance Doctor Who, 1963) 7. Tony Stark (currently portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., First Movie Appearance Iron Man, 2008) 6. Rooster Cogburn (portrayed by John Wayne (and Jeff Bridges), First Movie Appearance True Grit, 1969) 5. Han Solo (portrayed by Harrison Ford, First Appearance, Star Wars, 1977) 4. Daryl Dixon (portrayed by Norman Reedus, First Television Appearance The Walking Dead, 2010) 3. Ash (portrayed by Bruce Campbell, First Appearance Evil Dead, 1981) 2. Hulk 'Hulkamania' Hogan (portrayed by Terry Bollea, First Appearance World Wrestling Federation, 1983)

Trailhead Dedication Held
On Friday May 17th local dignitaries, volunteers and members of the community gathered at the trailhead pavilion in Slatington for the official dedication of the land to the borough. State Representative Julie Harhart, Senator David Argall and Mayor Neidermeyer were all guests at the dedication. Jason Breidinger, Venture Group Chair presented the building to the Borough and thanks those who helped, including special recognition for Peter Papay and family as well as the Boyer family. The Venture Group was one of the groups who dedicated time and talent to building the pavilion and will continue to maintain the grounds and trail. The Venture Group consists of all volunteer Pete & Karen Papay dedicated participating organizations; it is truly a one of a kind group. Other a great deal of time and talent to participating organizations included the Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Greater Lehigh Valley building the Slatington Trailhead Pavilion. Chamber of Commerce, the Slatington Lions Club, the Slatington Mason Lodge, the Northern Lehigh Historical Society, Northern Lehigh Future Focus, the Walnutport Playground Association, the Slatington Rotary Club, the Community Center, Washington Township, and the Borough of Slatington. Together the memberships of these organizations along with support from individuals and businesses in the community have contributed private monies, contributed in kind labor and completed a $125,000 project in just a few years. The Boyer family of Slatington contributed $20,000 to the project in memory of Asher Boyer, and dedicated a portion of the trail in his name. They also dedicated a bench at the trailhead to his memory. Allan Boyer talked about the trail and its importance to the community, noting that “[the trailhead] is something that will be here long after we are all gone.” The Slatington Trailhead is the only one of its kind; it is its own destination. Situated at the intersection of seven walking trails it now has heated public restroom facilities, a pavilion, a service/meeting room providing the community with a place to hold events in order to raise funds and WIFI internet access. The cliché "if you build it they will come" truly applies. The parking lot is often full and this year we will see community organizations holding fund raisers for themselves offering bicycle rentals, concessions, Christmas tree sales and much more. The first rental of the pavilion occured shortly after the dedication. Tom Marsden of Blue Mt. Sports in Jim Thorpe reserved the pavilion for Memorial Day weekend. Blue Mt. Sports rented out bikes and the Northern Lehigh Community This lecture focuses on the various types Center sold snacks for bikers and others taking of headaches, their diagnosis, advantage of the trails over the weekend. They and the treatment options available. will be there throughout the summer providing rentals and healthy snacks. Slatington Public Library With hopes of flower tents and farmers’ markets, 650 Main St., Slatington, Pa 18080 the space is now available to YOU, those who 610-767-6461 helped build it, fund it and support it. [Ich schtimm mit ihre ei; s’iss fer unsere Eldre un Voreldre in Ehr halde. Was denkt ihr? Losst uns wisse.] -Florence Baver June 6, 1957 A few weeks ago we endured another election . This had us just thinking on the different ways as voting was already done over the years. Sometimes in some places voting for something was done by raising the hands in the air. Sometimes voting was done by everyone speaking out loudly together [voice vote] and other times by making a cross [X] on a paper [ballot]. And now times have changed so much that we just pull a lever on a machine and it marks and counts the votes. But we have just read in an old history book about a completely different way to vote. This was surprising to me. When the congregation over at the Ziegels Church in Lehigh County wanted to vote to build a new church, they had a little debate about where they wanted the new church to stand. Some were in favor to stand the new church exactly where the old one stood, and others from the congregation wanted to build her on the other side of the road. The voting was done by the men throwing their hats on the location there where they wanted to have the church. The place where the most hats fell, there stands a church today. [Do you know at which place that church stands today?] We were asked whether the ‘Bobbelmoul’ column would come to an end, when we again teach full time next year. No, we expect to continue to write exactly as before, if you want to read it. This is a little work which gives us much pleasure and we won’t let anything come in the way for writing the Bobbelmoul’ column as long as we have readers and the editor prints it. [I agree with her on this; this column is to honor our parents and forefathers. What are your thoughts? Let us know.]

LANDLORDS: DO YOU HAVE A PLAN TO DEAL WITH PERSONAL PROPERTY LEFT BEHIND BY A TENANT? Landlords in Pennsylvania frequently have to deal with the issue of tenants leaving items of personal property or even junk behind when a tenant vacates the rental unit. If a landlord recovers possession of a rental property, the landlord is often faced with the problem of what to do with the personal property that the tenant left behind. While most tenants are fair people and will leave a rented unit in a clean manner, landlords can be exposed to liability if they simply dispose of the tenant’s personal property that has been left behind. A well meaning landlord can be exposed to lawsuits by tenants related to the alleged improper disposal of personal property, even if the complaining tenants are in breach of the lease. This author has even known of situations where seriously delinquent tenants vacated rented properties in the middle of the night, leaving behind inoperable and even burned out automobile shells belonging to the tenants , who then subsequently sued the landlord several months later for the alleged substantial value of the junk vehicles as “restorable classics.” Fortunately the Pennsylvania Legislature has recently provided some statutory relief for landlords concerning disposition of personal property left behind by tenants. If a landlord complies with the notice, retention and disposition provisions of the statutory language, substantial statutory liability protection will be afforded the landlord if they ultimately need to dispose of the personal property. If you are a landlord, or otherwise manage real estate for lease, you may wish to consult competent legal counsel to familiarize yourself with the statutory requirements regarding proper disposition of tenant property. Also, an attorney can help to ensure that simple, clear language is placed in your lease(s) that will clearly identify to your tenants how you will handle the issue of tangible personal property left behind at the termination of a lease, regardless of whether the lease ends under favorable or unfavorable circumstances. This will provide you with peace of mind and a clear understanding of how you, as a landlord, should handle issues of tenants’ personal property in a lawful manner. The contents of this article are for educational purposes, and do not constitute legal advice. Before pursuing any option discussed in this memo, you are advised to consult an attorney to discuss the specific facts and laws applicable to your case. This article was authored by Stephen A. Strack, an associate Attorney of the Steckel & Stopp Law Firm with offices at Main Street and Walnut Street, Slatington; Schnecksville and Northampton which has been serving the needs of the Lehigh Valley areas for over sixty-five years. -advatorial-

Rev. Edward McElduff Celebrates 60 Years of Priesthood Members of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Berlinsville welcomed their former pastor, Fr. Ed McElduff, as he returned to the parish to celebrate his 60th anniversary of ordination. Father Mac, as he is affectionately known, celebrated Sunday masses during Memorial Day weekend. He enjoyed a warm welcome as parishioners gathered in the social hall after each mass to offer congratulations. It was an opportunity for the 91year old Father Mac to reconnect with the flock he had served for 21 years, and to reminisce over 60 years of priesthood. Father Mac’s road to the priesthood was not typical. As a young man, he served our country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and received a purple heart for injuries he sustained. He recalled a time after the war, when he was young man and a cadet in the U.S. Naval Academy. He had developed a problem with his left eye. It was a condition that caused him to leave the academy. The future he had planned was not to be, and it was at that point that the young Ed McElduff, worn out mentally, physically and emotionally, placed himself in God’s hands. “Where God would lead, I would follow,” he said. He was led to the seminary. It was 1946 and he was 25 years old,

the oldest seminarian at the time. He struggled with some of his studies, but he found the quiet and peacefulness of the seminary drew him closer to Our Lord. During his 60 years as a priest, he served in six parishes. An early assignment found him in Shenandoah, in the coal regions of Schuylkill County. He remembered the time he received a call because there had been a coal mining accident. The thought of having to descend into one of the mines frightened him, but, he answered the call and ministered to the dying miner. It was one of many challenges he faced during his 60 years of ministry. Fr. Mac said he has often been asked what sustains him through all his years as a priest. “The Eucharist is my answer,” he said. “Inviting Jesus to join us as I stand at the altar means everything to me. And, YOU, have sustained me,” he said, as he gestured toward the congregation. “You supported me when I needed support, encouraged me when I needed encouragement. Thank you for your love and for being there for me when I was in need,” he said. Fr. Mac also acknowledged the support of his family. At the age of 91, he admitted his awareness that time on earth is growing shorter for him. “I am ready, Lord, whenever you are ready for me – but, I hope you’re not ready for some time yet! I like it here. I pray that if you’re going to keep me here, I’ll have health, so I can continue to do your work among your people.” Father McElduff does indeed keep active and involved. He’s a regular visitor at Holy Family Manor, a nursing and rehabilitation center in Bethlehem. He also visits area hospitals and is called on to pray with patients and their families. Looking at the past, Fr. Mac acknowledged that he’s seen many changes in the church over his 60 years. He expressed concern over the growing shortage of priests. He closed his remarks with a prayer, “I pray that as the church faces the future, she will have the wisdom to know what needs to be done and the courage to do it.”

Superintendent Q&A
with Parkland’s Richard Sniscak
During the upcoming summer issues our staff writer, Tyler Trumbauer, will be interviewing all six Superintendents from all six of the school districts that the Gazette encompasses. He will be asking each administrator the same inquiries to see how their district is faring in these trying times for public schools. The first installment is with Parkland’s Superintendent, Richard Sniscak. TT: How would you describe this past school year for your district across the board? RS: I thought we had a very good year. In the elementary we were able to transition our language arts program in to the Pennsylvania Common Core. With the middle levels our scores remain very strong on the PSSA assessments. At the high school were able to implement the Keystone Exams and that process flawlessly. We had a very good year academically. Pittsburgh Business News ranked us the 38th best high school in the state and U.S. World and News Report had us at 55 in the state. And we are a silver medal winning high school in the U.S. World and News Report. So I think there are a lot of positives and not just academically, but athletically as well in all seasons. Our spring musical sold out every show. So everything is positive on all ends. Parkland Drama Clubs presentations of Phantom of the Opera sold out every show this spring. The group also swept the annual Freddy Awards in May winning six awards, including Outstanding Overall Production. TT: In your own words what is the current state of the Parkland School District? RS: I think every school district is dealing with some economic hardships. Right now we are just starting to see some positive trends on the economic side for us in terms of real estate revenue and income tax. Hopefully those trends will continue and it will allow us to continue to support a high quality, comprehensive educational program that is rich is visual and performing arts and rich is athletic opportunities. Also, maintain a respective balance of the taxpayers’ ability to afford it as that is always a challenge.
TT: What is your main concern moving forward? RS: I think the financial climate is always going to be a concern. The state and federal government struggles to fund their own budget. So obviously that has a trickle-down effect to the local level and what those impacts will be for public education going forward. That is always a concern. The integration of technology is very rapid and maintaining a professional development for the teachers to infuse that technology into the classroom is something we are always working on as well. TT: What do you want to do in the immediate future with the district? RS: I think we want to incorporate a blended learning approach to our menu of offerings within the district, K-12. We want to give students an online experience to their education and do that in a mixture of a face to face environment and online learning. To infuse that into our curriculum, K-12 is something that we would really like to accomplish. TT: How do you see your district in five years? RS: I see a broader menu of offerings for students. I see students being able to participate in school not just in the brick and mortar school building. I see learning being extended to 24 hours a day, seven days a week with the use of technology. Learning will extend beyond the classroom walls for sure.

Indianland Garden Club Memorial Day Project By David D. Altrichter In preparation for Memorial Day, ladies from the Indianland Garden Club traveled to Union Cemetery in Washington Township to remember our Civil War Veterans buried at the Kress Memorial. This has become an annual tradition started by Past President Cindi Christman in 2010 when the Garden Club assisted the Allen O. Delke Post 16 American Legion with the 100 year restoration project of the Kress Memorial. They planted four spirea bushes which have matured into lovely plants that enhance the general appearance of the memorial. Other plants they used were Sweet Woodruff, Ajuga, Stella-Doro Lilies, Geraniums, Liriopes which the birds eat the berries. On a thoughtful note, they brought Mountain Pink Ground Phlox from the Indianland Church Cemetery and planted it with these Civil War Cindi Christman, AY Hughes, President Connie Nagy, veterans. As the spring sports season is winding down with just state playoffs remaining, there is a lot happening in the Lehigh Valley high school sports world. This column is to brush over everything that is impacting the local teams.
Lehighton Declines Offer
In early April I wrote about the Colonial League looking to expand. The league is increasing its number of members, however not as high as they wanted to. The CL will upgrade Notre Dame East Stroudsburg and Moravian Academy from associate to full members as planned, but both Pleasant Valley and Lehighton declined their invitations to join. Pleasant Valley cited losing rivalries among other arguments as their reasoning. Mainly it is

Last month the Mountain Valley Conference invited 10 of the 12 member schools of the Lehigh Valley Conference, excluding Bethlehem Catholic and Allentown Central Catholic. This proclaimed “SuperConference” took off with a full head of steam, looking to be feasible. It also started a lot of controversy with the exclusion of the two catholic schools. The MVC is eager to expand as they see that the end is near. With Lehighton leaving, the league will be down to only six schools in the entire league. Unfortunately for them, the LVC will not be doing business with them, yet. A few weeks ago LVC officials held a special meeting to discuss the possibility of a merger. After the meeting they agreed that they are open to expansion, however they would like to keep the entire LVC intact. Look for a future joining of the MVC and LVC.
