Along with flowers and beautiful spring weather, May also brings that special day to honor all the moms out there. Mother’s Day is May 11 this year, so don’t forget to say thanks to the woman who put up with you at your worst and helped shape the person you are. One of my favorite memories from childhood is reading Great Illustrated Classics with my mom. She instilled my love of reading and writing at a very young age and always encouraged me along my somewhat tumultuous career path. I was probably the only kid in my neighborhood that wanted a typewriter for Christmas when I was in elementary school, which she happily indulged. I know she’s reading this. So, I just want to say thanks Mom, for everything that you’ve done for me and all of the great advice throughout the years. Love you.

Meet the Staff
As we celebrate mothers this issue, it’s time to reflect on all we learned from the women who brought us into this world. What’s one important lesson from your mom that has stayed with you over the years? (Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 11. Don’t forget!) Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: My mom has inspired me in so many ways that it's hard to pick just one. I think the biggest lesson I learned from her is how important a strong work ethic is, not just to your employers, but to your own sense of self-worth. She always pushed me to strive harder and to be tenacious in everything that I do. It was more than just words though, she set an example to aspire to. Love you, Mom! Happy Mother’s Day! Danielle Tepper, Publishing Assistant: “Be a leader, not a follower.” This was usually the consequence of an argument that I wasn’t allowed to do something all my friends were doing, but it’s ultimately a decent rule to live by. Love you, Momma! Tony Pisco, Art Director: My mom has taught to me to always keep an eye on financial decisions, because they can cause pretty big headaches if they're not looked at the right way.
Alice Wanamaker, Publishing Assistant: I always remember the little life lessons from my mom at the most random times. Things like "make your bed everyday," "never refuse a breath mint," and "don't brush your hair in the kitchen" seem to stick with me wherever I go. Happy Mother’s Day! Being the oldest, I would have to say being responsible, caring, and organization has been a true quality of strength carried over from my mother. Happy Mother’s Day! Tyler Trumbauer, Staff Writer: One lesson that I learned from my mother is one that I struggle to listen to to this day. My mother always taught me to not care about what others think of me. At times, I follow her words of wisdom, but the majority of the time, I stress over my public image. In reality, it should only matter how I view myself and if what I'm doing makes me happy, but that is not always the case and I feel that others fall victim to that as well. My mother is the exception as she is able to win that battle and I commend her for that and everything else she has done for me. Happy Mother's Day, Mom!

Lehigh Elementary School Literacy Week
By DANIELLE S. TEPPER Lehigh Elementary School celebrated Literacy Week from April 7 through 11 with a packed schedule of activities from trivia to themed dress-up days. Guest readers included Superintendent Joseph Kovalchik (pictured above right with a third grade class) and Cherryville Animal Hospital’s Carla Meyers, V.M.D. (pictured above left with a fifth grade class), among many others. The goal of the week was “to encourage reading for both pleasure and information, to challenge students to read in various genres, and to have a great time while learning,” according to the Lehigh Literacy Committee.

Northampton Co. Area Agency on Aging Awards Outstanding Seniors
Submitted by JOHN MEHLER The Advisory Council of the Northampton County Area Agency on Aging will honor 11 older adults, including one who will receive an intergenerational award, who have contributed their time and talents for the benefit of others in the community. The “Outstanding Seniors Awards” Program will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 1 at the Wesley United Methodist Church at 2540 Center Street in Bethlehem. Louise Sanderson, Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council President, said that May has been designated as Older Americans Month since 1963. “The Area Agency on Aging, under the leadership of its Advisory Council, believes it is very fitting to recognize the older adults who have helped to make our community what it is today and to provide an example for future generations to follow.” John R. Mehler, Area Agency on Aging Administrator, noted, that at the ceremony, which the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council initiated in 2004, short essays which highlight each person’s passion for helping others, whether by outreach, personal action, public service, or

and did all this cool stuff and my dad was walking with a cane or in a wheelchair and just missed it all. He didn’t miss all of it, but he’s missing it all now— grandkids and the whole nine. For all the years my son was alive [before my dad died], my dad couldn’t move or talk, he just laid in bed. He was in and out of Scott and his son, hospice twice. Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) hosts the 17th annual COTA (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant) conference on Saturday, June 7 in the Community Services Center at LCCC’s main campus in Schnecksville. The all-day conference is geared towards COTAs, OTs, PTAs, PTs, and healthcare professionals who are interested in new interventions or a refresher course. $900 Donated For Aneurysm Recovery Expenses Submitted by DARIN WEIDNER On Saturday, April 12, the Red Knights International Motorcycle Club presented fellow EMT/firefighter Rob Kramer with almost $900 that the club had collected over the past few months to help with his million dollar medical bills and daily expenses for him and his four children. Rob is from the Wind Gap area and has also served as EMT on the Klecknersville Rangers paid ambulance crew. He suffered a massive aneurysm in January, from which he was not even expected to survive—but he has survived and is thriving with great recovery! Chapters from Pa. and N.J. (from as far as Cape May) joined in this event which started at the Kmart in Wind Gap and then proceeded to the Blue Ridge Fire Department in Saylorsburg to meet up with Rob. After a bit of catching up with Rob, the check was presented, and everyone enjoyed lunch together. Rob is doing well and is expected to start back to work part-time soon. Also, we want to get the word out locally that the RKMC PA Chapter 18 has a Fire Victims Fund. We have funds available for fire victims in need, and of course, we are always accepting donations. LCCC Announces Three C Scholarships Available For Students
Submitted by SEAN DALLAS Lehigh Carbon Community College and the Lehigh Carbon Community College Foundation have combined to offer a special scholarship pool for qualified high school students from Carbon County, Pa. Graduating seniors from Jim Thorpe High School, Lehighton High School, Panther Valley High School, Palmerton High School, and Carbon County Technical Institute are eligible to apply. The LCCC Three C Scholarship is available for two years of study at the LCCC Jim Thorpe campus. The student enrolls for 12 credits in the fall semester and 12 credits in the spring; the Three C scholarship pays for six credits in each semester. “This scholarship pays for half of your college tuition,” explained LCCC financial aid director, Marian Snyder. “Students start here with a scholarship which pays for six of their 12 credits of tuition per semester. They then can transfer to a four-year university or finish their associate degree,” Snyder said. Each award is for two back-to-back semesters (fall and spring) and may be renewed once by Roscoe P. A Dutch Easter Egg Hunt (Part 2) [The first part was in the last issue of “Town and Country”. In that issue I explained what type of eggs I used and where I had hidden some of them. I will now continue with that subject.] The flower beds are covered with mulch and I scratched around a little to make a hole, put an egg in, and covered it so that just a little color could have been seen. That I did three times. My boots stood next to the door and I placed an egg in one. I hid all the other eggs in like manner and I was very proud of myself. Then when the children and grandchildren came, I said to the children that I had been so clever, that the grandchildren could not find all the prize eggs this time and I must help them find their eggs. You can imagine how this played out! They found all the prize eggs right away, but some other eggs that had just a little change in them, they needed help to find. Then a Dutch dictionary was laid on my writing desk, to understand the clues in the prize eggs [which were written in Dutch], and I said, “You must look up the words in those clues to find your five dollar bills.” The first year that worked well, but the last year they looked around the house first before they looked

up any words. So what do I do the next time? Do you believe I can have another Easter egg hunt? I don’t know. Perhaps the grandkids can hide the eggs and I can find them. But then they, themselves, must put the money in the eggs! [Something else: In March, Ms. Betty Abel sent in a picture of Florence Baver and her students at the Belfast school to the editor (Remember that Mrs. Baver taught first through fourth grades). I must tell you that my family lived in Belfast and my brother went to that school when Mrs. Baver taught there. I thought perhaps my brother would be in that picture so I called up Betty and asked her if she could still identify the children on that picture. Yes, definitely! Right away she pointed him out, but not the boy I thought. (Our older siblings looked different when they were young, before we were born.) I also learned that Ms. Peggy Rothrock was in my brother’s class those days. I contacted her also to find out who was older and who was younger than my brother and her in that picture. I had so much fun when I spoke to both of them and I thank those two ‘Belfast’ ladies for their help.] -Larry Gradwohl

Siegfried Railroad Station Open
Submitted by IRENE URBAN The Siegfried Railroad Station, the home of the Northampton Area Historical Society, will be open to visitors on the third Sunday of each month from May through September and possibly October. The first Sunday the station will be open is May 18 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. The station is located in Northampton on West 21st Street (Route 329). The station is a museum housing artifacts from the Northampton area. There are several permanent displays, but each year there are special displays as well. This year’s main special display is the J.J. Kleppinger Meat Market. Other displays will be on World War I, ration stamps from World War II, and the Siegfried School (formerly the Wolf School). There is no charge to visit the station, but donations are being accepted for the continuing restoration project. When visiting the station, you can see the new floor in the stationmaster’s office. Funding for this was from the Northampton County’s Hotel Tax. For more information, call 610-262-4748.

The Northampton Area Public Library is celebrating the love of books by having a special storytime with Phyllis Palamaro, author of Farmer Bonnie and Sally the Sad Cow, on Tuesday, May 13 at 10 a.m. Call 610262-7537 to register. The next meeting of the Indian Garden Club will be held Tuesday, May 13 at Hope Lutheran Church at 4131 Lehigh Drive in Cherryville at 7 p.m. The public is invited to the annual cash and carry plant auction. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the auction will start promptly at 7 p.m. Tim Wotring of the Wotring Auction Center in Schnecksville will be the auctioneer. There will be a large variety of plants to bid on and it promises to be a fun evening. Those who attend are encouraged to bring a box for your purchases. There will be light refreshments throughout the evening. There will also be a special sales table where items will be sold inexpensively and a raffle. This is a well-attended event—come early for a front seat! Members are reminded to bring their plants to the church on Monday between 4 and 7 p.m. so plants can be sorted into categories. Plants should be labeled legibly and include information regarding growing conditions. Members are also reminded to bring refreshments and help to clean up following the auction. There will also be the regular tournament, as follows: Specimens - iris, Dutch iris, tulip, peony, columbine, pansy, wildflower, Lily of the Valley, lilac. Society Prepares for Grand Re-Opening

Recently, the annual basket social of the Lehigh Township Historical Society was held at the LT Fire Company in Cherryville. Thanks to everyone who helped, donated items, and supported the event. Sunday, May 4, the society will hold a Grand Opening of the completed Lehigh Township Historical Centre Addition. The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be tours, door prizes, light refreshments, and a souvenir given to visitors. Check out the items available for sale and buy one of our new T-shirts or hats. The society will be open Sunday, May 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. for their monthly open house dates for 2014. Grand Opening Of Lock 25 Picnic Area

Lehigh Township Rails to Trails is excited to announce the opening of a picnic area at Lock 25 along the Walnutport Canal Towpath. For the past year, with the support of the Walnutport Canal Association and the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor organization, LTRT has been clearing brush, planting perennials, designing signs and preparing an area for picnic tables near the lock. At one time a locktender’s house stood on the site, as did a mule barn. Today the remains of the house can still be seen. The foundation of the mule barn is also present and has been turned into the area for the picnic tables. LTRT chose this area to develop as it is within Lehigh Township. The Grand Opening is scheduled for Saturday, May 31 with a rain date of Sunday, June 1. It will run from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. During this time you can enjoy hot dogs and other food items. Members of Lehigh Township Rails to Trails and the Walnutport Canal Association will be on hand to tell you about the people who had lived and worked at the lock. Access to the Lock 25 picnic area is by foot or by bicycle. Motorized vehicles are not permitted. The lock lies south along the towpath, about 1.2 miles from the WCA pavilion. Local Athletes Shined at Allen
Many track and field athletes treat the Allen Invitational like the District 11 meet. This invitational includes nearly every school from the Colonial League, Lehigh Valley Conference, and Mountain Valley Conference. It has top talent from District 1 as well. It is staged to be the last rehearsal before the postseason meets begin in May. Many athletes from the Extra Point coverage area wished the invitational this past Friday at J. Birney Crum Stadium was the district meet because, based on their performances, they would be heading off to states. Palmerton had a good showing from their athletes as senior Austin Shupp took gold in both the boys’ 110 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles. Shupp, who will be continuing his track career at Shippensburg next year, knows how great of an event it is. “This is like a huge invitational, especially around here,” he said. “It gets every athlete mentally ready for districts and states.” A few other Bombers that seemed to be primed for districts are Jarred Sacks and Darris Rodrigues. Sacks grabbed gold in the boys’ triple jump and Rodrigues finished first in the boys’ pole vault. Palmerton’s CL North Division foe Northwestern has turned into quite the track and field powerhouse of late. The girls’ squad needs just two wins in their last meet of the regular season this week to go 22-0 in the regular season over the last two seasons. Also, the boys’ team needs to grab two victories in this last meet to complete an undefeated 2014 campaign under new coach Tim Cunningham. Their boys’ 4x100 relay team of Austin Weiss, Cole Miller, Harry Hall and Cam Richardson took first in

The senior said it is all about her this spring. “In previous years I’ve worried about other girls and how they are doing. This year I’m more focusing on myself and my goals, which is to break a fiveminute mile. This meet just sets the tone for me,” said Yost. “I’m doing better than I have in others years, but this year, I’m just focusing on myself. I just want to run for me my senior year.” Lehighton senior, Gwen Remaly, might have had the same mindset as Yost in her own events, but she ended up being better than the rest of the girls as Remaly earned gold from girls’ shot put and took a silver medal home from her distance of 109-11 in girls’ discus. Also, fellow Indian Kyle Whiteman won the boys’ shot put event with a throw of 48-11. Northern Lehigh also found their way to the medal stand as senior Jake Lieberman took third in boys’ shot put with a toss of 43-8.25. The event always has the feel of a postseason meet. The plethora of talented athletes, the tears of joy, the tears of sorrow, and the awards would make one believe so much more is on the line. However, this is just the Allen Invitational and the real fun starts at the league meet on May 6.

You get the annual Easter egg hunt at Bethany Wesleyan Church. It was a wonderful day for all who attended, many for the very first time. There were indoor/outdoor games, hayrides, inflatables, prizes, and lots of food. Thank you to all who came out to make this annual event a great success.

Submitted by NINA WEISS Hope Church will begin offering a grief support group so people have the opportunity to help one another through the grieving process. The group meets on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at the church. They will meet for 12 weeks and use materials from the Grief Sharing series. The meetings are open to the community. To register, or if you require more information, contact Pastor Paulette Obrecht at 610-767-7203. "Car Wash for a Cause" will be held Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Cherryville. The confirmation class will be "hosting" the event, with help from Youth Group for snacks and baked goods. Proceeds will go towards the National Youth Group Gathering in Detroit 2015 and to a cause yet to be chosen. $5 for cars, $10-15 for larger vehicles. Hope Lutheran Preschool is now accepting registrations for the 2014–2015 school year. The school’s structured learning environment helps to prepare three and four year old children for their formal school experiences. Walnutport VFW Supports Army Unit in Afghanistan
Submitted by LINDA OLEWINE A raffle was held Sunday, April 27 at the Walnutport VFW to help support an army unit the post recently adopted. Proceeds from the raffle are going toward purchasing “wish list” items for the army unit it recently adopted, stationed in Afghanistan. This is the third time in the last 20-plus years the R.W. Fritzinger VFW Post 7215 has adopted a military Unit, says Post Commander Carl Ellis, and each time the unit adoption has included a local serviceman. Last time, it was a soldier from Palmerton and this time it is Lehigh Township serviceman Michael Kistler, of Company A of the 101st Airborne Division. Kistler lives with his mother Kathy and is the grandson of Ted Kistler of Washington Township, a current member of the Walnutport VFW who also served as its quartermaster in the past. Items on the unit’s wish list include things like baby wipes (to keep sand and dirt out of their eyes), small fans, snacks and candy and other items. Instead of the public donating these types of items, however, Ellis says monetary donation are more important so that each of the unit’s 30 members received the same items in their care packages. Ellis says the post hopes to have the packages shipped out to the unit by the end of May, with the Slatington Skeet Club, where Michael is a member, volunteering to pick up the hefty postage bill. Ellis says the VFW’s motto this year is: “No one does more for veterans.”

Submitted by GEORGE ASHMAN The Palmerton Area Historical Society monthly general meeting will be held on Monday, May 12, in the Knight’s Gallery of the Palmerton Area Library. A brief business meeting will start at 7 p.m. followed by the program. Please note the change. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the visit to the Palmerton Train Station had to be cancelled. Instead, Scott Everett, Trail Manager for the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, will present a powerpoint program. His topic is “Past, Present & Future of the Trail.” The trail is 165 miles long, passes through our Lehigh Gap area and holds special significance and interest for Palmerton. A question and answer period will follow.

OITNB Orange is the New Black was my first Netflix original and I think it’s a brilliant concept. Consumers like it because of the lack of annoying network regulations and censorship, plus no commercials, and the ability to devour episode after episode without waiting a week in between. Showrunners probably appreciate the flexibility and innovation. And Netflix, well they get to see their numbers start shooting up because no one wants to be left out when the buzz starts circulating about an awesome new show, so they hurry to sign up. It seemed like everyone was talking about Orange is the New Black after its July 11, 2013 release. After giving it the pilot test, I could see why. If you haven’t tried out this awesome prison dramedy, you need to do so before season 2 hits everyone’s queue on June 6. The show is actually the true story of Piper Kerman, based on her book Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison: “With a career, a boyfriend, and a loving family, Piper Kerman barely resembles the reckless young woman who delivered a suitcase of drug money ten years before. who bring Litchfield to life. Aside from the truly unique plot, I love that they managed to take such a bleak setting and inject it with humor. (It comes from the creator of Weeds, after all.) I cracked up more than once during the pilot and it only got better. Watching Piper navigate the social structure (“Baby, high school is high school.”) and come to terms with who she is and what she’s done is a journey I’m all too willing to take with her. the great work being done on behalf of abused children,” said Harhart. “Since that time I have been relentless in trying to obtain some type of reliable state funding for these centers. Although it took longer than I had anticipated, it was worth every minute in order to secure this needed funding.” A CAC is essentially a one-stop-shop treatment program for abused children which brings together doctors, nurses, prosecutors, social workers and law enforcement. This multidisciplinary approach gives abused children the best chance to recover and also provides the most effective way to gather evidence to bring perpetrators to justice. The new law increases the cost of a duplicate birth certificate from $10 to $20 in order to establish a funding stream to support existing CACs, support the development of new CACs, train individuals mandated to report suspected child abuse and other child abuse-related costs. It is estimated the duplicate birth certificate fee increase will raise approximately $2.86 million per year for the centers.

Currently, nearly two dozen CACs are spread across Pennsylvania’s 67 counties. “More CACs are definitely needed; however, to date, the centers have been operating mainly on shoestring budgets pieced together through fundraising efforts, donations and meager federal grants,” said Harhart. “Lehigh County is fortunate because it is one of a few counties to have a CAC within its borders. I am hopeful, with this new law, that we will be able to open new CACs to make treatment options available to more Pennsylvania children and their families.” Under the new law, an advisory committee comprised of 21 members, including the victim advocate and representatives from law enforcement, county children and youth agencies, and victim service providers, will also be created to make recommendations regarding how to administer the funding. Joining Harhart at the press conference were Sen. Bob Mensch (R-Berks/Montgomery/Bucks); Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin; and Drs. Ronald Swinfard and John Van Brakle, with the Lehigh Valley Health Network, as well as other supporters. Signed into law on the same day as Harhart’s legislation was a bill that will also dedicate approximately $400,000 to CACs through the use of state grants. The funding will come from the dissolution of the DARE license plate fund.
