From The Editor’s Desk. Joe Korba This is our Memorial Day edition, and while I’ve never served I have many friends and acquaintances that not only put duty and country before any of their own needs, but also risk their lives to promote these lofty ideals. Military service is one of the most selfless callings there is, and these men and women deserve our thanks and respect. I hope you all enjoy this issue, and if you happen to see a current service member, or veteran, take a moment to stop and thank them for their service.

As part of the Celebration’s first pre-event initiative, residents were invited to design a logo around the celebration of the town and it’s history, which the Committee will use in all promotional and event efforts. The logo contest, open to all interested participants, was conducted over a two-month period. Over two-dozen entries were received in that time. “The caliber of designs we received was amazing. All of the entries demonstrated pride for our rich history and all of the artists took time to depict what they feel is at the core of who we are as Slatington residents,” Public Relations Committee Chair Alice Wanamaker said. “I am thankful for everyone who submitted a logo, and I am excited to get the celebrations under-way.” According to Jonathan Jakum, the design was inspired by the historic aspect of Slatington, “I tried to incorporate elements from around Slatington and the history inspired the design,” he said. Jakum holds a degree in Communications Design. Originally from Gettysburg, he has been in the area for about five years. Jakum read about the contest on Facebook. The logo will be prominently featured during all anniversary celebration events, on all marketing and publicity materials including merchandising, website and social media, printed materials, as well as incorporated into keepsake items. Jakum will be honored at an upcoming committee meeting when the logo is officially unveiled. Slatington’s Sesquicentennial celebration is developed to fund, promote and host a series of events designed to honor the heritage of Slatington.

Recognizing The Signs And Symptoms Of Schizophrenia And Seeking Support (NAPS)—Imagine that during the hopeful and exciting period of your life as you enter young adulthood, you begin seeing things that are not really there, behaving strangely without control and having problems speaking clearly. These are some symptoms of schizophrenia, a chronic and disabling brain disorder that affects about 2.5 million American adults and usually occurs between the late teens and mid-30s. Meet Rebecca Roma, M.D., medical director, Community Treatment Team at Mercy Behavioral Health in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Rebecca P., an individual who was diagnosed with schizophrenia during college. Together they discuss the signs and symptoms of the condition, where to seek help and how to start on the path toward recovery. How does one recognize the signs of schizophrenia? Dr. Roma: Schizophrenia may occur abruptly and manifest as social withdrawal, deterioration in daily personal care, unusual behavior, outbursts of anger, paranoia, hallucinations or delusions. Rebecca: When I was 17, I started becoming more introspective, felt sad and became paranoid. By college, I thought people were coming after me. I was unable to turn off unwanted thoughts, making me unmotivated, suspicious and scared. What can you do if you suspect you or a loved one may have schizophrenia? Dr. Roma: First, it is important to talk to your doctor and get educated. There are also local organizations, such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health America that offer support for both individuals with mental illness and their family members/caregivers. Rebecca: When I first experienced symptoms, I withdrew from family and did not talk about what was going on with me. But over time, I realized my mom was my strongest source of support. She communicates with my treatment team and attends classes with me at our community mental health center. In your experience, is recovery possible for someone with schizophrenia? Dr. Roma: Mental health recovery is an ongoing process, not one single outcome. The experience can vary widely from one person to the next. That’s why recovery plans are individualized and tailored toward each person’s unique needs. That said, I know individuals with schizophrenia who are living independently and keep steady jobs and others who are living with family, helping with chores and contributing to the household income. Once diagnosed and on treatment, I recommend that individuals sit down with their treatment team and loved ones to create an action plan for achieving goals.
Medication, including oral and injectable treatments, is the mainstay of treating schizophrenia symptoms. There are resources available for those affected by schizophrenia, including support groups, peer-to-peer programs and informational websites, such as www. TreatOnceMonthly.com. Rebecca: With support and treatment, I have redirected my focus from managing my disease to living life. I now take a long-acting medication and am no longer worried about remembering to take my medication every day. To others struggling with schizophrenia I would say, know you are not alone and there is hope. Learn more about treatment options for schizophrenia at www.TreatOnceMonthly.com. TreatOnceMonthly.com provides resources for individuals living with schizophrenia to help them understand treatment options and choose a medication that is right for them with the help of a healthcare professional. Visit the site to watch patient videos, access a doctor’s visit guide and learn more about different types of long-acting treatment. Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., provided the content for this article. With support and treatment, schizophrenia can be managed and people living with the illness can lead meaningful lives.

Northwestern Tearing up the Track
At the beginning of this season the head girls’ track and field coach at Northwestern, Dave Kerschner, knew his team could go the distance this spring. What bolstered their triumphant journey was distance, their distance runners. “We went in to every meet knowing that our distance would dominate,” said Kerschner in a phone interview last Friday. He continued the praise by saying, “We would plan for our meets on where to place the girls knowing that our distance would give us anywhere from 25-40 points in a meet and outgain the other team by at least 10 points.” Most of that credit for the distance running of the lady Tigers belongs to three underclassmen. Sophomore Lauren Anderson, sophomore Rachel Cerrone and junior Haley Yost are three

spectacular sprinters that consistently post quick times. All three of these ladies received four medals each at the league tournament. 2013 has been a breakout season for Northwestern’s girls’ track and field team. The ladies owned a phenomenal 11-0 record during the regular season. That mark earned them the 2013 Colonial League Dual Meet Championship. Also, they were the favorites to win the league tournament title during the twoday championship which was held at Whitehall’s Zephyr Sports Complex on May 7 and 8. The ladies didn’t fail to deliver. Racking up 124.5 points through 17 events at the Colonial League championship, they hoisted that trophy as well. Their closest competitor was Palmerton’s girls’ team who finished second in the final rankings with 101 points. Kerschner said unprecedented camaraderie is the backbone of this success. “I’ve never seen a track team come together like these girls did. We presented it to them at the league championship whether they wanted to go for individual medals or this team title. There was overwhelming support for the chasing of the team Continued on Page 32

KCB Challenge
The 2013 KCB Challenge 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk will be held on June 1 at 9 a.m. The race starts with a run through the Historic Kreidersville Covered Bridge, the last covered bridge in Northampton County, and ends with a second jaunt through the KCB, though perhaps not as swiftly. The KCB Challenge is aptly named because it’s no easy practice run. Both the 5K and 10K start with an attention-grabbing incline but the rest of the course is predominantly a welcomed downhill. Both runs have beautiful views with varied country scenery and cross two historic bridges. Plenty of shady spots along the way. The awards for the winners are unique fused glass art pieces designed by Glass by Erica. Postrace activities will include a generous spread of wholesome goodies. Professional timing by Pretzel City Sports.

title. They saved individual times for the good of the team title and it was great to see.” The PIAA mandated move of the girls’ soccer season from the spring to the fall has had rippling effects on every sport, some negative and some positive. It gave this squad a boost. According to Kerschner, he has “10-15 athletes” this spring from the soccer team that have never been a part of the track team before. Senior star Sara Jones joined the squad this season. She has now played and excelled in four sports during her high school career in New Tripoli with basketball being her best as she is the reigning Colonial League MVP, the all-time leading scorer in Northwestern history on the hardwood and will be heading to the United States Naval Academy in the fall to continue her basketball career. The District 11 Track and Field Championships on May 15 and 16 will be another two-day showcase of the top tier athletes in the Lehigh Valley Conference, the Colonial League, the Mountain Valley Conference and the Schuylkill League. This year it is the Schuykill League’s turn
to host and they have chosen Blue Mountain High School as the stage. Northwestern’s girls will have an uphill battle in winning the team title there because they are one of the smallest AAA schools competing in the class rank. However, Kerschner is confident they will find success. “It is going to be tough against the big dogs there. With that in mind we fully expect our 4x800 relay team to make states. I think our 4x400 relay team has a shot as well. We ran a 4:10.82 at the league meet and Bethlehem Catholic ran a 4:06.26. So I think we will be right there in that event. Individually Yost has a shot, Cerrone could return to states as well. [Junior] Trista Cunningham with discus has an outside shot of making states as well.” It was a team effort to win this much thus far. Now it is up to some shining stars to stand out and take the spotlight for themselves.

Ascension Day was this past Thursday. It always comes 40 days after Easter. Years back people never worked on that day because it was a holy day. Thunderstorms are apt to happen on that day and many people thought if one would work on that day, lightning would strike his buildings. Also one should not have done stitching that day. But that was the day to go fishing. Many guys went fishing on that day. Fishing and visiting people were not counted as sins. Now we want to speak of another day which comes 50 days after Easter. That is Pentecost and it is always celebrated on a Sunday. When that day comes one should have the housecleaning done and everything white washed. Everything should be well cleaned up by that time. The following Monday they called the second Pentecost [Whitmonday]. That day was always a big day. It was always Battalion Day that day and no one worked, but went to the Battalion Day celebrations. There was a parade; later [in the day] they danced and drank. This year Memorial Day comes on Whitmonday. I bet that fewer people will work then, then work on Ascension Day. Should it be that way?

One Family, One Veteran, Two Heroes
(NewsUSA) - From the perspective of many veterans, their military service is merely a duty. They were doing their job. They don't look in the mirror and see a hero. When wounded Air Force sergeant Tom Marcum returned home from Iraq, he was his family's hero every day. But his wife April would soon step up to become the second hero in the Marcum family. Tom's injuries were extensive, and the impact on April and their two sons was enormous. In two years, Tom endured four separate mortar explosions. He faced a traumatic brain injury (TBI), hearing loss, vision problems and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). April faced a whole new reality. Her days were a flurry of doctor appointments, therapy and home healthcare, not to mention raising two boys. For 18 months straight, she was the sole nurse, driver, maid and mother to three. She had to meet her husband -- a friend since grade school -- all over again. "I missed the help my husband gave me with the kids and errands," says April. "And some time to myself. I don't like to admit this, but I think I was close to a breaking point in my own emotional health." Due to Tom's brain injury, he wasn't the same man whom April married. He experienced behaviorial changes, mood swings and memory loss that he could not control. Despite the tenacity of her love for him, April was nearing her breaking point -- until she got a call from Wounded Warrior Project. April went to a Spouse Retreat hosted by WWP, where she was able to meet other people in situations like hers. "I made some deep, emotional connections with several women," April says. "It was just the right thing at just the right time. I came home ready to get back into the fight again. I was re-energized and happy when I came home." Both Tom and his sons, Gabe and Jared, saw a positive change in their mom after the retreat. Slowly but surely, the family knit itself back together through love, humor and fierce dedication. As Tom says, "Family is our lifeline."Wounded Warrior Project has 19 programs and services to nurture the mind and body, and encourage economic empowerment for injured service members from post-9/11 conflicts. Believe in Heroes is a fundraising campaign that raises awareness and funds for WWP. Consumers can make direct donations, buy Believe in Heroes items and save via high-value coupons at grocery retailers throughout the country. So far, 56 national brands and 75 retailers are participating. Learn more at woundedwarriorproject.org.

(NAPSI)—All Americans can now be part of the nation’s lasting tribute to the American Soldier. The Army Historical Foundation’s National Museum of the United States Army Brick Program supports the campaign to build the National Army Museum, the first museum to tell the complete history of the U.S. Army from 1775 through today. Commemorative bricks will line the Path of Remembrance leading to the museum entrance. The bricks can be personalized as a unique and permanent way to honor soldiers and veterans, Army families, Army civilians and Army supporters. Actor Joe Mantegna, the museum’s national spokesperson, chose to honor his uncle, William J. Novelli, a Purple Heart recipient who served in Patton’s 3rd Army in World War II. Steckel And Stopp Honors Retiree
On April 19, the Law Firm of Steckel and Stopp along with family members gathered at Bert’s Steakhouse in Palmerton to honor a recent retiree, Kathy Kemp. Prior to her retirement, Kathy celebrated her 26th anniversary with the Firm in December, 2012 officially retiring on March 29. Kathy began her career with the Firm in 1986. During her tenure at Steckel and Stopp Kathy completed both the Paralegal Certificate Program and earned the Elder Law Certificate at Penn State. She spent most of her career performing Estate Administration duties. She earned the title of Senior Estate Administration Paralegal and has helped to develop and maintain many of the estate administration procedures for the benefit of clients, which continue to be used by current staff.
Page 49
To honor Kathy, the Partners of Steckel and Stopp, Charles Stopp and Charles Waters provided entertaining comments. Waters performed a Letterman style spoof of “Top Ten Reasons Why Kathy Should Retire”. Runner up was Lucas Pierce, followed by third place Josh Eden and fourth place Darien Middaugh. These four young men advanced to the final round of interviews where they were asked questions and judged by Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Chunko, Miss Keglovitz, Mr. DeLong, and Mr. Oertner. Municipal Update Continued from Page 23 rumored store is “still a possibility.” Peter Kern, Palmerton Chamber President, was up next. Mr. Kern discussed some projects in his borough, including the new firehouse and updating the sewage treatment plant, which according to him, is “one of the oldest in the state.” Palmerton has also applied for status as a National Historic District, similar to Slatington’s status, and is expecting approval at a hearing on June 4th. In other historic Palmerton news, former New Jersey Zink President and town namesake Steve Palmer’s pocket watch is going to be auctioned off by Christie’s Auction House. If you’re interested in owning this piece of local history, the starting bids are expected to be around 1.2 to 1.8 million. Mr. Kern also discussed the positive effects the expansion at Blue Mountain Ski area will have in his community. Mayor Walter Niedermeyer, of Slatington, spoke briefly about his community. There is going to be some paving and curb cutting on Church Street between first and second streets. The parking lot near Home Slate will also be getting repairs. Slatington received an EPA Grant for an emergency generator at the sewer plant. Mayor Niedermeyer also said that the police have

She discussed the bureaucratic quagmire and delay of PEMA and FEMA funds still allocated to the borough for Hurricane Sandy storm damage. Ms. Stauffer would also like people to know that the Pavilion at the Lincoln Playground is complete and will be available for rental shortly. Josh Frebolin, Washington Township Supervisor, spoke about the Turnpike Bridge Project, which will affect the span over Emerald. They are currently in the bidding process.

Wacky Watermelon Facts
Mermaid Tail
Cutting board 1 large oblong seeded or seedless watermelon Kitchen knife and paring knife Large bowl and spoon or scoop Green dry erase marker Channel knife Dowels and toothpicks Optional decorations (found at any craft store): Edible turquoise shimmer powder/disco dust, mermaid cookie cutters, light blue or turquoise fabric or mermaid decorations. 1. Wash watermelon under cool running water and pat dry. 2. On cutting board, place watermelon on its side and cut off 4 inches from one end of watermelon to provide a sturdy base. Cut remaining watermelon in half lengthwise. 3. Hollow out both halves of the watermelon with spoon or scoop, reserving watermelon pieces to dice up for serving or cutting out mermaid shapes. 4. Use dry erase marker to trace mermaid tail freehand lengthwise across one entire half. With knife of your choice, carefully trim away to form the outline of mermaid tail. Use the channel knife to form scales and details. 5. For added detail, brush on edible turquoise shimmer powder/disco dust (purchased at cake decorating store or craft store). 6. Use pencil-sized dowels to secure the mermaid tail to top of base. Decorate with watermelon cubes or mermaid watermelon cutouts and serve. If using the mermaid watermelon cutouts as topper for cupcakes, as shown, add watermelon cutout with toothpick or small dowel first and then ice around it.
n The first recorded watermelon harvest occurred in Egypt some 5,000 years ago. n Watermelon is the most consumed melon in the U.S., followed by cantaloupe and honeydew. n Early explorers used watermelons as canteens to store liquids. n To date, the world’s heaviest watermelon was recorded in 2005 and weighed in at 268.8 pounds. n Watermelon is made up of 92 percent water.
