A Blessing for Moms Source: www.dayspring.com
Being a mom is like no other job in the world, and her job is never done. Unlike a typical 8-to-5 job, motherhood is a “career” often motivated by pure, unwavering love. While she’s responsible for so much, often it may feel as if she goes unappreciated, or at least under-appreciated. Let’s reach out to all the moms in our lives to remind them how loved and appreciated they are, and let’s honor and celebrate them with this blessing. Dear God, Thank you for your endless provisions of grace and mercy. We come to you today to lift up every woman who answers to the name of “mom.”We ask that you supply each one with the strength they need for those difficult days. Give them wisdom to know when to encourage and when to correct their children. Supply them with an extra dose of patience. Remind them that children are a heritage and a reward from You (Psalm 127:3 CSB), and shower them with special moments they can cherish. Lord, we also ask that you draw them close to you daily. Remind them of their worth in Your eyes - that they, too, are cherished children of a loving Father. We pray for contentment in this very special calling. May every mom realize

that this is a mission from You, one that brings truly great rewards in the end. Amen We hope you’ll join us in praying for Moms everywhere. And we hope you’ll also take a moment to share this article with the moms in your life and let them know they’re blessed, prayed for and appreciated. Thinking of a mom (or two) who could use an uplifting note today? Send encouraging messages directly from our Ecard Studio, or take a moment to pick out a small gift featuring her favorite Scripture. Set up a special time to connect with her over the next two weeks and simply let her know you care. She’s the one who knows you deeply and loves you dearly, all the while instilling the importance of faith in God and a love for others. She takes her role seriously, praying for you, guiding you and serving you as a beautiful reflection of God’s unfailing love. It’s time to let her know she has made a difference in your life. Show her how much you truly appreciate her thoughtfulness, kindness, generosity and love. This Mother’s Day, rise up and #CallHerBlessed. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. Proverbs 31:28.

So clearly, we are remembering our mothers.Yet, each year I am faced with the same question: What should I get my mama for Mother’s Day? How do I show my love? Sometimes, to be quite honest, I get stuck. So this year I reflect: What do I want for Mother’s Day? What makes me feel special? If you’re stuck, too, here are three things most moms would love for you to do: 1. Relieve her of her duties. I’m a wife, mother of two, human puppy mama, daughter, granddaughter, friend, and teacher. Like all mothers, I’m busy. Busy transporting kids, cleaning messes, giving advice, lending a hand, working a job, doing laundry, and attending meetings and events. Nothing says, “I love you,” like walking into the house and finding my husband has already cleaned it. I love when my son or daughter does chores without being asked. This Mother’s Day, relieve mom of her usual to-do’s by making it your responsibility. Plan the meal. Do the laundry. Help her catch up on something for work. Galatians 5:13 says,“through love serve one another.” Honor your mom by serving her this Mother’s Day. 2. Reassure her with your words. In fourth grade, my son wrote a poem. Mama’s eyes are so bright and blue they are almost blinding. Her hugs are so warm they can light a fire. Her kisses are so soft and warm I think it’s the sun. Mama’s cooking is so delicious that I think I’m in food heaven. I used to wonder why my mama said something
homemade meant more than something bought, but now I understand. Hearing how my family feels about me is the best present. God teaches to,“honor your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12). Honor your mom with your words this Mother’s Day. 3. Remember something she loves. Whether it’s a special piece of jewelry she’s had her eye on or her favorite snacks, a thoughtful gift reminds your mom of how well you know her and that you’re thinking of her. What does your mom love? Be creative. One year for Mother’s Day, my husband surprised me with framed pictures of me and my son. The pictures were taken during a day together in the mountains. My husband knew I would love looking at those pictures and remembering an awesome day. Jesus gave. Love gives. Philippians 2:4 reminds, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Honor your mom by remembering what she loves on Mother’s Day. Make this Mother’s Day special for your mom and think about how you can hit one or all of these three Rs — giving her some relief and reassurance, and showing her you remembered.

Indianland Garden Club submitted by Lynn LaBarre
In April, Master Gardener Linc Coffin spoke to the club about the Spotted Lanternfly and how we can deal with this pest. With Pennsylvania the number one exporter of hardwoods, there is great concern that the lanternfly could continue to move west in the state. In fact this pest is now found in Dauphin County. Wheel bugs, spiders and praying mantis are the main predators. As gardeners and homeowners, we must work to stop the spread, keep watch for eggs on infected trees, and band trees with sticky paper. More information can be found on the Penn State Extension website: www. extension.psu.edu. On May 14, 2019, the club will meet beginning at 6:00 PM with a display of specimens and arrangements along with the annual sale and auction beginning at 7:00 PM. Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings which are held monthly at Hope Lutheran Church in Cherryville.

Lehigh Township Historical Society News Submitted by RUTH HALL KENT
Our first Open House of the season will be held this coming Sunday, May 5th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Historical Centre Museum, 3811 Lehigh Drive, Northampton, PA (next to Indian Trail Park just east of Cherryville). Our museum is filled with items from the past, many books and collections of photographs and news articles about events in the area as well as genealogical information about local families. There is no admission charge, but donations are welcomed. Spring Cleaning? Remember that our mission is to preserve the history of the Lehigh Township and we welcome any old or historical items that can be added to our museum collection. Lehigh Township Historical Society is interested in old documents, photos or items you uncover (and no longer want) when cleaning out your house, attic, basement, garage or outbuildings. Don’t throw things out, even if you think they are not worth keeping. Contact us and we will decide if the articles are worthy of being entered into our archives for future research or display. Items from old businesses; old political items; farm, household and personal items; books; calendars and newspapers that have been stashed in the back of a drawer or closet may
be great things to donate to our museum and share with others for a flashback to the past! All donations to our museum and archives are recorded and acknowledged. Any items you are donating can also be dropped off on Tuesday mornings or brought to the first Open House. Do you like to have a Sunday when you don’t have to cook? Our next fundraiser on June 2nd allows you to do just that. See the ad in this issue for our BBQ to GO TakeOut Dinners to be held on June 2nd. It’s a good idea to place an order by May 24th although there will be some available for walk-ins while the supply lasts. Order forms can be downloaded from our website at www. lehightownshiphistoricalsociety.org to print and mail in with payment or you can call our office at 610-440-0151 and leave a message. Check out our Facebook page for more information. We hope to see you soon!

Mother’s Day 2019 Source: www.history.com
Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world, and Mother’s Day 2019 occurs on Sunday, May 12, in the United States. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day

traditionally involves presenting moms with flowers, cards and other gifts. History of Mother’s Day Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.” Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother church”—the main church in the vicinity of their home—for a special service. Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s. Did you know? to spike by as much as 37 percent. Ann Reeves Jarvis and Julia Ward Howe The origins of Mother’s Day as celebrated in the United States date back to the 19th century. In the years before the Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia helped start “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” to teach local women how to properly care for their children. These clubs later became a unifying force in a region of the country still divided over the Civil War. In 1868 Jarvis organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day,” at which mothers gathered with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation. Another precursor to Mother’s Day came from the abolitionist and suffragette Julia Ward Howe.
In 1870 Howe wrote the“Mother’s Day Proclamation,” a call to action that asked mothers to unite in promoting world peace. In 1873 Howe campaigned for a “Mother’s Peace Day” to be celebrated every June 2. Other early Mother’s Day pioneers include Juliet Calhoun Blakely, a temperance activist who inspired a local Mother’s Day in Albion, Michigan, in the 1870s. The duo of Mary Towles Sasseen and Frank Hering, meanwhile, both worked to organize a Mothers’ Day in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some have even called Hering “the father of Mothers’ Day.” Continued on page 30

Mother’s Day Continued from page 27
Anna Jarvis The official Mother’s Day holiday arose in the 1900s as a result of the efforts of Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. Following her mother’s 1905 death, Anna Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. After gaining financial backing from a Philadelphia department store owner named John Wanamaker, in May 1908 she organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. That same day also saw thousands of people attend a Mother’s Day event at one of Wanamaker’s retail stores in Philadelphia. Following the success of her first Mother’s Day, Jarvis—who remained unmarried and childless her whole life—resolved to see her holiday added to the national calendar. Arguing that American holidays were biased toward male achievements, she started a massive letter writing campaign to newspapers and prominent politicians urging the adoption of a special day honoring motherhood. By 1912 many states, towns and churches had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday, and 28
Jarvis had established the Mother’s Day International Association to help promote her cause. Her persistence paid off in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Jarvis Decries Commercialized Mother’s Day Anna Jarvis had originally conceived of Mother’s Day as a day of personal celebration between mothers and families. Her version of the day involved wearing a white carnation as a badge and visiting one’s mother or attending church services. But once Mother’s Day became a national holiday, it was not long before florists, card companies and other merchants capitalized on its popularity. While Jarvis had initially worked with the floral industry to help raise Mother’s Day’s profile, by 1920 she had become disgusted with how the holiday had been commercialized. She outwardly denounced the transformation and urged people to stop buying Mother’s Day flowers, cards and candies. Jarvis eventually resorted to an open campaign against Mother’s Day profiteers, speaking out against confectioners, florists and even charities. She also launched countless lawsuits against groups that had used the name “Mother’s Day,” eventually spending most of her personal wealth in legal fees. News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || MAY 2, 2019

By the time of her death in 1948 Jarvis had disowned the holiday altogether, and even actively lobbied the government to see it removed from the American calendar. Mother’s Day Around the World While versions of Mother’s Day are celebrated worldwide, traditions vary depending on the country. In Thailand, for example, Mother’s Day is always celebrated in August on the birthday of the current queen, Sirikit. Another alternate observance of Mother’s Day can be found in Ethiopia, where families gather each fall to sing songs and eat a large feast as part of Antrosht, a multi-day celebration honoring motherhood. In the United States, Mother’s Day continues to be celebrated by presenting mothers and other women with gifts and flowers, and it has become one of the biggest holidays for consumer spending. Families also celebrate by giving mothers a day off from activities like cooking or other household chores. At times, Mother’s Day has also been a date for launching political or feminist causes. In 1968 Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther King Jr., used Mother’s Day to host a march in support of underprivileged women and children. In the 1970s women’s groups also used the holiday as a time to highlight the need for equal rights and access to childcare. MAY 2, 2019 || townandcountrygazette.com

Rescue a Friend Denali LOVES people and is a total snuggle bug. He is house trained and crate trained. The perfect family for Denali would be one who is very active. A fenced in yard is required as Denali enjoys time in the yard. He would need to be the only dog or may be okay with a submissive dog. No cats. We would prefer he goes to a home that has experience with Northern Breed Dogs. Because of his size we will not adopt him to a family with younger children.

It almost causes one pain. The schools are much better now, The people are also much smarter; To make all sorts of things At this they also go much farther. We have more churches in this land And also more good pastors, In all things now should The people become better. One would think it could not be, And yet it is true, In many a thing they have become worse, The last forty years. And when one looks at the people now And sees them outside walking around, Then it looks [as if] almost everyone is rich Enough to buy a farm. Some of the people are always working And don’t think too much, And put everything they earn Into clothing on their back. Then others who hate work And yet want to walk around proudly, They loan money from their friends And buy on credit. Continued on page 42

The people did not always spend so much For all sorts of decorative items. They lived according to their budget Just forty years ago. The boys do not want to work And yet not endure hunger; The parents should keep them nicely In food, money and silk (?) Most of the people want to earn a living, And want a big paycheck, And would gladly have a nice place Where there is little to do. They don’t want to work as a laborer And also not as a farmer. Soon there will be few people chiseling stone And building homes with them. The boys always worked hard With horse and harrow and plow And they were not so stubborn Just forty years ago. It does not go any better with the girls now, I am sorry to say, Like when they should do a little laundry Then they also complain right away. Rather they sit in the parlors And knit pretty things, And always let mom go And make the meal for them. They always think they would be more beautiful And would look better, If they just were dressed up properly And would be as white as a ghost. The girls – they always worked diligently And were heavy and well rounded, And also had red cheeks, Just forty years ago.
When a man goes in business now Then he wants to become rich right away, And it doesn’t matter what type of occupation, Because it happens also with some pastors. And if it is not going well for the people And their plans fail, Then they cheat and falsify promissory notes And lie, rob and steal. It is now honorable to borrow money And promote oneself as truly wealthy, And if one does have much [wealth], then go Bankrupt and then defraud others over it. One can barely trust the people anymore, It is a big catastrophe; There was much more honesty, Just forty years ago. The big crooks are never in danger, They are always being freed, And they catch all the little thieves And lock them up. And if a rich man murders another one Then his life is spared, And if a poor person does the same thing, Then he will soon be hanged. This land is so full of bad people And that becomes common knowledge yet; One is certainly no longer safe In his own house. They locked up all the thieves, The murderers on the end of a rope; Then the people always had peace and quiet, Just forty years ago. [Apparently one can hear the same expressions of frustration with the current society in every age. This poem was first published in Daniel Miller’s Pennsylvania German, Vol 2 in 1911. I edited the poem for space; there were verses in the original covering the topics of taxes and politicians which likewise sounded contemporary.]

The Senior Lunch for May will be held on May 15th from 11:30 till 1PM. Helping Hands Community Center, a ministry of St. Peters UMC located at Main and Chestnut St. in Parryville continues to host Life tree Café each Saturday evening from 5pm-6pm. The Café is open to all people for an hour of stories and conversation to feed your soul. May 4th, check the web site for topic information. The Church is planning a 125th Anniversary on September 15, 2019. The community is also welcome to attend this special day. Birthday Crash!!!!
Bikers, Family & Friends, I am writing on behalf of a wonderful friend Arron Borger (46), who’s colon cancer has returned with a vengeance and he is currently at home on hospice care. This major life change has greatly affected his family, both emotionally and financially. Arron and his wife Cheryl are newlyweds, just married in January of this year, and have 2 wonderful sons, Dom (19) and Mason (4). They are one of the most generous and kind-hearted families known to the many people around them, and are certainly deserving of our support, as they have done so much for those dear to them. I would like to take this time to ask for your help in Revving Up for Arron’s 47th birthday, with a Lap of Honor on Sunday, May 5th @ 2PM! Arron is an awesome husband, father and friend. He loves motorcycles, cars and working with his hands. He spent many years at area bike & auto shops, both riding& working. He still cherishes the days when he had his beautiful Harley. He is suffering greatly, because of the physical toll his cancer has taken, in a very short time. His strength through this battle has been heroic. As anyone might imagine, this has put so much pressure on both him and his family. Because of the immense medical bills they have, in addition
to raising a family, they are struggling to meet their financial needs. Not only would Revving Up for Arron help to lift his spirits, it will help us in celebrating him. If you could, we ask for your assistance in joining us for a lap or 2 through Arron’s neighborhood. Family & friends will be in the neighborhood as well. Any gifts, cards or donations are welcome, but please keep Arron, Cheryl, Dom & Mason in your prayers! If you are willing to join the ride or support Arron and his family, please contact Tanya Kromer at tinker725@ptd.net with any questions. We will meet at the Municipal Park on Laubach Avenue in Northampton, Sunday May 5th @ 2PM! We will then ride to Arron’s home at 405 East 7th Street, to wish him a very, very HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Thank you in advance for your support And concern for this special family!

LCCC Awards Scholarships from the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund submitted by Linda Baker
Lehigh Carbon Community College student Aldonair Alphonse has been awarded the 2018 Krysta Hankee Memorial Leadership Scholarship Award in the amount of $2,000. The award was presented by Kimberly Bentz, director of sales and marketing at Pacesetter Enterprises and vice president of the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund. Alphonse received the award at a luncheon provided by LCCC’s Foundation. Also making the award were Bill Hankee and Christine Hankee, Krysta’s parents. Alphonse is a full-time student at LCCC majoring in business administration. In addition, Jean Zellner, a member of the Hankee scholarship committee, presented a $1,000 educational grant to Sidney Geist, a full-time business administration student. Barb Hudak, a member of the scholarship committee, presented $500 educational grants to Ashlee Davies, Emmaus High School senior and Dual Enrollment student studying Occupational Therapy, and Cathryn Seibert, a full-time liberal arts major. The awards are made based on the students’ academic performance, friendship, leadership and community service and are in memory of Krysta Hankee. Krysta lived in the Lehigh Valley for most of her life, graduating from Northwestern Lehigh High School in 2003. During her high school years, she took classes at LCCC and went on to graduate MAY 2, 2019 || townandcountrygazette.com
from New York University, Stern School of Business in 2007. She began her short career at Triangle Equities of Whitestone, N.Y. She collapsed in a gym one morning in September 2007 and passed away a few days later. The Hankee family is proud of these scholars for exemplifying many of the same community-focused traits found in Krysta. For more information about LCCC’s scholarships, visit www.lccc.edu/scholarships. Applications for the Krysta Hankee Leadership award will be open February of 2020. To apply for the award visit www. krystahankeememorialfund.org.
