From The Editor’s Desk. It’s hard to believe it’s May already, but you’re currently holding our Mother’s Day edition in your hands. (Hi, Mom! Happy Mother’s Day! –ed.) We also have an interesting article from Gazette publisher Alice Wanamaker, an update on Lehighton Baseball and Northwestern girl’s soccer from the always-insightful Tyler Trumbauer, a poem by Lehigh Twp. writer Pat Ritz and other local news and events. It’s been a busy month for us here at the Gazette. We spent the last weekend in April at the Carbon County EXPO, where we met plenty of our readers from the northern part of our coverage area as well as networked with some small businesses from up that way. I got to hang out with Alpacas from Picnic Woods Alpacas in Lehighton and do some wine tasting at booths that local vineyards had set up. Overall, a really awesome experience and I always like meeting Gazette readers. I want to thank the Carbon County Chamber for giving us the opportunity to sponsor the event. With spring in full swing, it’s drive-in season once again, and hopefully, next issue we’ll roll out my movie reviews. I’ve recently finished the first
book of The Hunger Games (not bad for young adult fiction) and am obsessively watching the HBO series Game of Thrones, based on George R.R. Martin’s best selling fantasy novels (excellent series, if you enjoy the genre make sure to read Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books, if you haven’t already) so I’ve been pretty burned out on pop culture as of late. I think next month’s release of The Avengers will have me buying movie tickets once again. Summer quickly approaching also means our 2nd Annual Coolest Treat contest is starting, make sure to mail in your vote or vote online for your favorite local place to get a Cool Treat. Hope you enjoy this issue, as always, and feel free to e-mail me with any feedback or suggestions.

We sat beside your bedside, Our hearts were crushed and sore; We did our best to the end, ‘Til we could do no more. In tears we watched you sinking, We watched you fade away; And though our hearts were breaking, We knew you could not stay. You left behind some aching hearts, That loved you most sincere; We never shall and never will Forget you father dear. Sadly Missed by his Loving Wife Dorothy Weber & His Children.

Coolest Treat 2012
Page 9
By Joe Korba The weather is getting warmer, and it’s that time again. The Town & Country Gazette is opening voting in our 2nd Annual Coolest Treat contest. Last year, Edgemont Acres took the prize. Will one of our local ice cream places, water ice stands or any other purveyor of frosty fun be able to topple the champs? Determining the winner is up to you, the reader, so make sure to get your vote in early and be entered to win a gift certificate for a Cool Treat from the winning business. You can circle one of the local ice cream places on our entry form or fill in one of your own choices if we forgot your favorite place to grab a cone, shake or sundae. Good luck to all the businesses and let the voting begin!

Oplinger-Hower Post 899 held their annual Children’s Easter party on March 24th, There were 35 children attending the Easter egg hunt and visiting the Easter bunny. This year there were many different contests for the children such as: whoever found the "empty plastic egg" was the winner. Many of the children were surprised when they found out they had the winning egg. The children also guessed how many mini marshmallow were in one jar and how many jelly beans were in the other jar. The winner of the marshmallow contest was Alex Cohen and the winner of the jelly beans contest was Quincy Kunkel. Each child received $5.00 dollars. There was also a coloring contest with each entrant receiving a clock. New members are also welcome to join the Post, find us on facebook!

All Is Fair In Business
A shopkeeper was dismayed when a brand new business much like his own opened up next door and erected a huge sign which read 'BEST DEALS.' He was horrified when another competitor opened up on his right, and announced its arrival with an even larger sign, reading 'LOWEST PRICES.' The shopkeeper panicked, until he got an idea. He put the biggest sign of all over his own shop. It read: 'MAIN ENTRANCE'

How Today’s Businesswoman Can Do It All (NAPSI)—The estimated number of womanowned businesses across the country is 8.1 million. Yet what’s really impressive is that many female business owners are also mothers, wives and heads of households. If you fall into this category or know someone who does, the following tips on balancing work and home life may come in handy: • Protect boundaries—If you find yourself checking your smartphone during dinner, you might need to set clearer boundaries between business ownership and family time. Separating work and family time will help you be more productive at both. • Stay in touch at school—Small-business owners rarely have time for volunteering in the classroom, but mothers can still be a part of their child’s educational experience. Something as simple as donating supplies shows you’re interested in your child’s classroom success. • Shift your schedule—Sixty-three percent of mothers say they want to be home when their kids leave for school and at the end of the day. To accommodate, try shifting your schedule and conducting nonurgent business after hours. Don’t

From your gang that loves to make you gray! Thanks Dad for the picture!
be afraid to off-load work to others when feasible. • Organize work and home life—Make a list of your top three organizational challenges both at home and at work, and put a detailed plan together for overcoming the challenges. If time management is an issue, try creating a family calendar that lists everyone’s daily activities, including work schedules and family time. And avoid working so hard on your business that your home becomes chaotic. • Don’t let guilt get you down—A study from the Working Mother Research Institute found that more than half of mothers who work report feeling guilty about not spending enough time with their kids. Furthermore, small-business owners are notorious for working long or odd hours. Try not to be your own worst critic. Sometimes, being a mom has to take priority. Push back business issues to after hours if it’s possible. • Limit your time spent online—Many women spend hours a day online, for professional and personal reasons. But tasks such as managing a Facebook page or website can become a full-time job and significant source of stress. To free up some time for family, try Deluxe’s Web Solutions Package. The time-saving “do it for me” package bundles a number of services that help you achieve a professional online presence and help your business rank higher in search engines. • Seek more advice for managing your business—Deluxe, a growth engine for small businesses, offers products and services designed to streamline marketing for small-business owners. Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
Lady Tigers are on the Prowl in Colonial League
With the calendar turning to May this week, the focus is now turning to the girls’ soccer playoffs. In the Colonial League, the semi-finals are Wednesday, May 9. A team that is sure to be a part of those games is the Northwestern lady Tigers. Northwestern is having themselves a tremendous season as they are 11-0 in the Colonial League and 14-0 overall as of April 28. The Tigers leading scorer is Sarah Segan who has a double digit amount of goals so far this spring. Unity is another factor to this squad that is making head coach Kelly Bleam’s girls unbeatable so far. This team has found great success for most of their season and there are only a few games left and I think they have the firepower to run the table. Their toughest game left is against Pen Argyl, which will be played before this column goes to print. The Colonial League leaders also face a mediocre Notre Dame East Stroudsburg team before the season is out. Look for Segan and company to be lightening up not only the league playoffs, but the district playoffs as well.
Indians are Hunting for the Playoffs
The Lehighton Indians baseball team lost a lot of valuable talent to graduation last summer. The biggest statistic of them all is that this ball club lost pitchers that pitched over 80 innings for them last season. The departure of those athletes left head coach Brian Polaha and his Indians in a bit of a gray area, “Before the year when people asked me what kind of team we were going to have, I wasn't sure how to reply. So I just told them that if some of our guys step up we could possibly win 10 or 11 games, but if some of these guys struggle and aren’t ready for varsity baseball, we could win 5 or 6 games,” Coach Polaha said. Polaha had a realistic outlook on his upcoming season and according to his standards, his team has exceeded expectations, as they are 11-4 as of April 30. This team still has a bit to go before the regular season concludes, but they put themselves in the driver’s seat for a great playoff push. A few players that contributed to the unexpected success for the Indians are Jacen Nalesnik, A.J. Wenrich and Josh Kerns. Polaha also mentioned in an e-mail last week that Steve Shanton and Darren Wanamaker have also been playing well so far this season. Lehighton’s schedule will toughen up down the stretch which will pose a daunting task for the MVC contenders. Games against East Stroudsburg North, East Stroudsburg South and Pleasant Valley will make or break their season. If the Indians can notch at least a few wins in their last contests of the regular season, they will be in the playoffs and have a favorable seed. e-mail: extrapoint@townandcountrygazette.com

The Northern Flicker is found in the Lehigh Valley and the United States year round. This colorful woodpecker is larger than other types of woodpeckers and spends much of its time near trees and on the ground. Like the one seen here, the Flicker can often be seen frequenting a backyard suet cage. Birds of the Lehigh Valley Last month we read Florence Baver’s list of birds. Northern Lehigh Compliments By: Alice Wanamaker
With the recent rise of bullying in our society and schools, many students are left feeling that they just don’t fit in. The epidemic is growing feverishly in our schools and communities. The effects of being bullied can be felt throughout a person’s life, often leaving the person feeling sad and alone. Sometimes, bullying has effects that are incurable and result in self-destructive thoughts or actions. Among the growing trends are cyber and text message bullying. This is most common in school children and is becoming more and more common in high schools. According to dosomething. org, an online organization that helps young people harness their abilities to bring change, the epidemic has become so wide spread that 42% of kids have been bullied online at least one time. And let’s not get complacent, it happens here in our schools. From Parkland to Lehighton, in schools throughout the entire area kids are being bullied; they are called names, made fun of and disrespected by their peers and online “friends.” As a result students, teachers, parents and community members are all looking for ways to help people be nicer to one another and stop bullies from hurting others with their words. In early January 2012 a Northern Lehigh graduate started an online facebook page called “Northern Lehigh Compliments” as a way to counteract online bullying. The creator remained anonymous. In early March, after a successor was in place, Mike Hoffman a 2011 NL grad came forward as the creator of NL Compliments; “I just did it for people to feel better about themselves,”
he said in an online post. His compliments ranged from telling someone that they are a nice person with a great personality to commenting on their sports abilities and academic achievements. Currently standing with 464 friends and followers, the idea for the page was borrowed from neighboring school district, Parkland Compliments. Mike’s busy college life at Moravian has brought on a new era and a new administrator of the page, who will remain anonymous until his/her time comes to move on. After having the opportunity to talk to the person who now is responsible for handing out free comments to all who like the page and request one, it is clear that it has brought a new sense of caring and positive attitudes. In a private interview, the administrator said; “There was a lot of negativity in the community and there were a lot of hate statuses on facebook, but after Mike started [NL Compliments] the negative comments in the community and on facebook have cooled down.”The administrator said that it is nice to be able to give out compliments to people, and very rewarding to have them say thank you! With over 200 compliments since January, there is still a lot of work to do and a lot of compliments to make. Continued on Page 33

Northern Lehigh Compliments Continued from Page 34 “The first day, there were probably 100 people that liked [the page]. It’s tough to do sometimes, to keep up with all the requests, but I do a couple here and a couple there,” the administrator said. The administrator is focused on helping make people smile and see their worth and value through simple compliments like “I think you are a nice person,” and “You’re such a sweet kid with a great amount of humor.” The desire to help people may have come from being on the other side, having experienced bullying, “I admit I have had some bullying problems, its good to give back against it. There can be positive people in the world [and] there really is something to look forward to in life, don’t focus on all the negative comments that someone is giving you,” they said during the interview. With the hope of continuing to give out free compliments to members of the Northern Lehigh community, the administrator noted that it is everyone’s job to speak up against bullies. The anonymous compliment-writer also talked about the importance of educating everyone (not just students) on anti-bullying, noting that older people sometimes forget the anti-bullying messages we all heard in elementary school. Before ending the interview, the administrator gave a compliment to us, the Blue Mt. Town & Country Gazette; “I’ve read that a couple times, I actually really like it. It lets people know what s going on around them and gives businesses help. I actually really like it, it’s really helpful.” For more information about how to stop bullying and how you can help visit www.dosomething. org or join with the Town & Country Gazette and take the pledge to stand up to bullying by visiting www.standupday.com. West End Playground Revitalization By: Alice Wanamaker
A public meeting sponsored by the Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission on the future of the West End Playground was held on Tuesday, April 24th, at the Assumption BVM Church in Slatington. The Borough of Slatington recently took possession of the West End Playground, and the meeting was held to give residents an update on the playground, as well as hear input, suggestions and concerns, especially from those living in the neighborhood surrounding the playground. Sixteen residents attended the meeting and they all seemed to be in favor of the borough purchasing the property and allowing the Slatington Parks commission to maintain the park. The commission currently maintains Victory Park. In addition to the West End and Victory Parks, the borough owned parks/recreation areas include; Walnut Street Playgrounds, which is
Happy Mother’s Day
maintained by its own association, The Fish Pond and Slatington Memorial Park. The borough also owns some land between the Slate Heritage Trail and Trout Creek, know as Kern’s Mill Park. Most residents in attendance of the meeting favored a move towards having two separate play areas at the West End park, one for younger children which would house equipment for them and one for older kids, which would include basketball courts. Based on discussions and feedback, the parks commission is looking into replacing the older swing sets, which are currently unusable. They are also looking into replacing the baseball field with a play area for small children, purchasing an adjacent lot for parking, reopening the concession stand and having members of the community help organize activities in the evenings. The recreation commission is planning on holding another public meeting later this month, with a date yet to be set. Their goal is to have the residents in the uptown area revitalize and reform the West End Playground Association, and then run the day-to-day activities of the playground themselves. Anyone looking for more information can contact the Parks & Rec. Commission; visit slatington.org, email slatrec@ptd.net or call (610) 767-7626.

Build Your Own Rain Barrel Workshop in Lehigh Township
The Bertsch-Hokendauqua-Catasauqua Watershed Association cordially invites the public to a build-your-own rain barrel workshop at Indian Trail Park at the junction of Indian Trail Road and Lehigh Drive (PA 248) in Lehigh Township from 9:00am to 12:00noon on Saturday, May 12. Watershed Association members will provide all the materials and tools necessary to help you build your own fully- functioning rain barrel, ready for installation at home. Choose from three, one-hour long sessions from 9:00am10:00am, 10:00am-11:00am or 11:00am-12:00noon (eight participants or parties maximum per session). Rain barrels are great water saving devices and ideal for gardens. The barrel sits underneath a downspout and collects water from rooftops each time it rains. The collected rain water can then be used to water lawn and garden plants. This helps conserve groundwater, utilizes high quality water for plants and decreases water bills. And the rain barrels can be painted with paints that adhere to plastic. The cost of the workshop is $35, which includes a plastic 55-gallon drum and all the necessary parts and assistance to build a rain barrel. Similar rain barrels cost up to $100 at home and garden centers. Registration and prepayment is required. For more information or to register, contact Jim Wilson at 484/239-9977 or send email to james-wilson@northamptoncd.org. The Bertsch-Hokendauqua-Catasauqua Watershed Association strives to be the area’s leader and chief advocate for conservation— inspiring residents, businesses and local governments to value their natural resource, engage in conservation practices and work collaboratively with the Association to protect and preserve the area’s natural resources and water quality.

Walnut Street Playground Association will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a block party on Friday August 10 from 5 – 10 p.m. As part of the anniversary festivities, the association would like to sponsor a basketball tournament on Saturday August 11. Basketball on the Walnut Street Playground or “Roosevelt” as it was known years ago has a long and storied tradition. These teams included the “Iron Men” of 1954, the league championship teams of the 1980’s up through to the District XI title team of 2008. The Walnut Street Playground Association is looking for an individual or group of individuals who would be interested in organizing and running this 30th Anniversary Tournament. Interested individuals should contact Robert at (610) 554-4099.

Preparing For The Future (NAPSI)—It’s always best to plan in advance. Thelma Duggin, a former health industry CEO, knew this to be true in business and in life, but when it came to the life of her mother Elizabeth, advance planning was a pretty tough sell. Elizabeth was in her late 80s at the time and living alone in her Alabamahome. Duggin sensed that her mother could use help doing light chores around the house. Her greatest concern, however, centered on Elizabeth’s overall care as she continued to age. Fortunately for Duggin, she had access to a program called Solutions for Caregivers, available through her workplace’s employee assistance program, that has nurses assess a family’s situation and needs, develop a care plan and discuss recommendations with the whole family. Duggin and her siblings, none of whom live in Alabama, arranged for Solutions for Caregivers to develop a care plan for Elizabeth. She was assigned a case manager named Kathy Hawk to work directly withElizabeth at her home. The way Duggin saw it, “It’s better to do this before they need it.” But there was an issue. “Mom did not want it,” Duggin said. It turned out this simple step helped the whole family outpace a series of potential problems. When an illness placed Elizabeth in the hospital, she asked to receive care from her former physician. Kathy filled out the paperwork to enable that to happen. Elizabeth’s condition required her to receive care at a skilled nursing facility; Kathy rated different facilities and found one that most closely met Elizabeth’s needs. She took the reins when Elizabeth developed diabetes and, later, a blood clot. “It comes down to peace of mind for your loved one,” said Duggin. “You feel totally comfortable and confident. It’s almost like somebody is doing everything for you and you have the confidence that it will get done right.” Elizabeth now resides in assisted living. A Mother Who Dared To Dream I SAMUEL 1:1-28 Mother’s Day has a very special place in the hearts of the majority of people in America. Hallmark estimates that 150 million Mother’s Day Cards will be sent this year, making it the third largest greeting card holiday of the year. A mother was browsing in the ladies’ department one day with her son who was just learning to read. Trying to read all the signs he could, he came upon one in the maternity department. "Look, Mom!" he said excitedly as he pointed at the sign. "They’re even making clothes for eternity now!" In I Samuel 1 we are told the story of Samuel, who was considered the greatest figure in Israel’s history between Moses and David. His mother was Hannah. Her husband was a Godly man and each year he would take his family to Shiloh where the Tabernacle had been located since the days of Joshua. They made the journey in order to worship and sacrifice to the Lord. His other wife had children, but Hannah didn’t. Back then to have children was a sign of God’s blessing and not to have children was a source of shame to Hebrew women. Year after year Hannah was childless and only had one place to turn …….to God in prayer. She vowed that if she did have a child she would dedicate it to God’s service and raise him a Nazarite. That no razor would touch his head and

he would not eat or drink anything that came from a grapevine. God heard Hannah’s prayer in a wonderful way. A son was born to her. She called him Samuel because she said he was a gift from the Lord. Samuel was six years old when Hannah took him to Eli the priest and dedicated him to full time service in the Lord’s house. Samuel’s leadership in the future of Israel helped the nation to dare to dream again. She later had three more sons and two daughters. You see, Hannah loved her son so much that she was willing to sacrifice herself for the sake of her son. She gave up the greatest joy of not being able to bring up her son and have him around her. Samuel’s greatness reflects the greatness of his mother, Hannah. He led Israel in its first revival. He drove the Philistines back into their territory. He re-established worship of Jehovah. He set up the Kingdom of Israel. He anointed David. Have your dreams been shattered? Do you need to dare to dream again? Here is a “Daring to Dream Again Prayer” to pray from time to time. “Lord and Master, as your servant I sincerely want to please You. I don’t need to know Your plans for my entire life, so help me focus on today. To the best of my ability to discern, this is what I sense are Your expectations. Take some time to share your expectations with God. He is always there to help us with the things we face. And like Hannah, may we commit all of our ways to the Lord, not only on Mother’s Day, but every day we live. Have a very Happy Mother’s Day ladies! Growing Your Small Business - Be Outrageous By Carol Ritter
I remember when I coached softball many years ago. I just wanted to be a coach and help kids learn about softball, team work and, most importantly, build character. When I took on the sport, I didn’t realize, I needed umpires, I needed a team mother, I needed to attend meetings and I needed to gather a team to work on the fields. I liken that to running a small business. As an example, let’s take Angela who loves to cook and is really good at it. Will she grow her business simply by the overwhelming aroma of fresh made bread and the wonderful taste of her Italian specialties. Possibly, but probably not. She will build her business by strategically positioning herself in the community, offering outrageous deals and consistently driving people through the doors. The secret to her success is her ability to handle and explore risk not necessarily the taste of her food. You cannot see outrageous growth without risk. If Angela or you are content with middle of the road success and just paying the bills then don’t read the following Top Ten Ways to Grow Your Business Outrageously. 1 Design and implement an outrageous marketing plan 2. Be willing to spend money to make money 3. Hire talent with personality (this is huge for customer service) 4. Create a sense of urgency for your buyer (they can’t live without your product) 5. Teach your customer many reasons why they should shop with you (Valentines Day offer Dinner for Two created by Angela) (Wild Wednesdays with wild discounts) 6. Know your competition - and be outrageously bigger and better (an example of this is the home of the mile high lasagna) 7. Ask your customers what they would like to buy (consider new things on your menu)
8. Reinvent yourself at least every two years (let your customers see new and exciting) 9. Create an atmosphere of outrageous service (so lacking in this world, be known for service, when customers feel great they will purchase and pay for your product) 10. Don’t be afraid of free (always be willing to do something or give something for free, the world loves that, maybe recipe of the month online, customers can submit their recipes and vote on best recipe win dinner for two once a month) I used an Italian restaurant as an example but this could work for most small businesses. Don’t be the ho hum, run of the mill business in your community. BE THE MOST OUTRAGEOUS IN PRODUCT, IDEAS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE. Carol Ritter is an accomplished professional speaker, coach and educational consultant specializing in remarkable leadership, outrageous fundraising, million dollar marketing, and building organizational alliances throughout the country. Carol’s innovative strategies provide leadership with bullet proof ideas for recruiting MORE MEMBERS, MORE MONEY AND BETTER LEADERS. www.caroltalks.com

Chamber Honors Greg Soltis
Greg Soltis of Walnutport was honored on Monday April 16 by the Greater Northern Chamber of Commerce with the 18th annual Spirit Award for his service to the community. Upon returning to the Lehigh Valley Mr. Soltis worked for several local companies including Bethlehem Steel, Howard Construction, and Hillenbrand Framing. He also worked pouring urethane floors for Versa Tech out of Riverton, NJ and racket ball courts for Martin Surfacing & Decking in Cockeysville, Maryland. In 1984, he became a foreman for Kempton Valley Builders. Greg became self employed in 1989 when he formed Greg’s Enterprise Construction with Concern, which has since become abbreviated to Construction with Concern. Team Beltzville was able to raise over $1,100 for Autism Speaks through creative fundraising and participating in the walk. If you would like to support the foundation and make a difference in the life of a child suffering with Autism, you can do so by visiting them at www.walknowforautismspeaks.org/lehighvalley or send a donation form to: Autism Speaks -Lehigh Valley Walk 5455 Wilshire Blvd. Ste 2250 Los Angeles, CA 90036
