MOTHER’S DAY WINNER

Winner Kristy O’Brien My Mom is special for many reasons. She was a full time mom raising four daughters while my father worked three jobs and went to college part time. Even though money was tight my mom was very thrifty and creative in finding ways to provide for the family so we never felt like we went without. She was accomplished in sewing, acrylic painting, crocheting, cooking, cleaning, house repairs, lawn care etc. At Christmastime she would help us make paper snowflakes and decorations for the tree to

brighten up the house. When Halloween came she would purchase the fabric from the bargain bin at Ames and create some of the most amazing costumes for us. She always made sure we felt loved above all else. She encouraged me and supported me through all the phases of my life. I am glad that my children get to have her in their lives because she was such a big influence on mine. She is a pretty amazing woman and I am so lucky that she is my mom.

PUBLIC AUCTION

“We are very grateful to our farming neighbor, Dave Kistler, for designating H.H.T.L.C. as the recipient of this donation. It will enable us to make the benefits of therapeutic horseback riding affordable for children and adults with disabilities who otherwise would be unable to participate”, said Harvey Smith, H.H.T.L.C.’s Executive Director. The Grow Communities program’s purpose is to make a positive impact in farm communities by partnering with farmers to support the causes that are important to them in their communities. Each year, farmers enter for a chance to win a $2,500 donation that they direct to a local nonprofit. Since the program began in 2010, farmers have directed more than $26 million in donations across a broad cross-section of organizations that reflect the makeup and character of rural America, including food banks, emergency response organizations, schools, youth agriculture programs and many others. “Farmers have directed funds to more than 8,000 community organizations across rural America since Grow Communities began,” said Al Mitchell, Monsanto Fund president.

Stamp Out Hunger! Food Drive Saturday, May 13th 25th Anniversary of the Largest One-Day Food Drive in the Nation

Saturday, May 13th, marks the 25th anniversary of the largest one-day food drive in the nation. Local members of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will Stamp Out Hunger on May 13th, and collect non-perishable food donations along their regular postal routes and deliver them to Second Harvest Food Bank of Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania and its network of member agencies. Food will then be distributed to the

families that need it most. Letter Carriers will be aided by volunteers from Teamsters Local #773, Keenan House, and the Northampton County Probation Department for this incredible one-day food drive event. Participation in Stamp Out Hunger is simple. Postal customers need only to leave their sealed, non-perishable donations in a visible place by their mailbox before their regular delivery on Saturday, May 13th. Donations should be placed in a sturdy, clearly-marked bag so the Letter Carriers know to

add it to the collection. Truck drivers from the US Postal Service and Teamsters Local #773 will then make a special delivery of the food donations to Second Harvest Food Bank or to one of its local member agencies. Second Harvest is in need of non-perishable items including cereal, peanut butter, pasta, rice, tuna, and canned soup, fruits, or vegetables. Non-food items such as diapers and personal care items such as shampoo, toothpaste, and soap are also needed. For the safety of the Letter Carriers and volunteers, participants should not donate items in glass containers. Postal customers across the region have donated more than two million pounds of food over the years; the entirety being delivered by dedicated, local Letter Carriers to Second Harvest and its member agencies. Across America, more than 10,000 cities and towns participate in Stamp Out Hunger, making it the largest one-day food drive event in the nation. These donations provide a critical boost for the Food Bank in the summer months, when many families rely on their local food pantry to supply the extra groceries needed to cover

the meals their children receive at school during the school year. “The children, seniors, and working families served by the over 200 member agencies of the Second Harvest Food Bank network will benefit greatly from the generosity of the postal patrons throughout our region. The school year ends, and many families whose children rely on the free school breakfast and lunch program, struggle to stretch their grocery budget to include those additional 10 meals per week for their children. We appreciate the efforts of the Letter Carriers, the NALC, and all of the supporters who make this effort possible. We couldn’t meet these critical community needs without them,” says Second Harvest D i r e c t o r, Je s s i c a Dokachev. About Second Harvest Food Bank Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania distributes food and grocery product to more than 65,000 people in need each month through a network of more than 200 non-profit member agencies in Carbon, Lehigh, and Northampton counties. 3258 Cherryville Road Northampton, PA 18067 610-262-1556 lvdentalsolutions.com

MAY 4, 2017 || townandcountrygazette.com

When I was a young school boy, Already a long time age, It was not yet clear to my parents, What their wild fellow would become. I was also just like other boys, Not on behind with childish pranks. They were afraid that perhaps I Would not learn what I was capable of, And would do things which I should not do, And stand at the other end. Perhaps they were often discouraged, They did not know how it would go with me. When I now think about the old schoolhouse, see the picture in my head; And the big door for coming and going, And the good old fellow, Who was the schoolmaster, full of good valor, And who often whipped us for our own good. Then many things comes forward for me, Which are no longer so today, Churches and schools were uncommon, And they had no bell within a steeple, Continued on page 26

Touch of Dutch Continued from page 25

Any old house would work for us, The constructing did not cost much. My schoolhouse had eight corners, And [was] round like a grain shock; It was not fancy, beautiful , yet smooth (?), And on the roof there was no bell. Yet we learned things in there, The teacher also often annoyed. The desks, they were at the wall In a ring around the school room No coat racks were at any bench; That was extremely dumb. On either side of the stove there, Was a slab-bench, which was terribly hard. Man’s height above the first floor , there was The second floor above it; A small opening by the stove pipe, There one went up through. The teacher also now and then, Sent a student up there for a half hour.

And with the church, it was rightly so; It appeared completely common inside; In God’s house nothing was for show; Now pride looks [should go] out, One should also go along, to be [if] proud, There is certainly no sin inside. I went away from the round schoolhouse, A bigger one was my goal; There was a high steeple up on that one, [And] in the school also many students. In that steeple was a bell, Which rang and clanged beautifully, loudly and brightly. That bell rang eight times a day; The first time in early morning, To get us out of bed, dress ourselves neatly, And then to seat ourselves, And learn until it sings in the head, Then one even says, I believe I will stop. No one, however, will hear, Everyone thinks to himself; My chum always said, “You keep persevering, you are doing it all for yourself.” Soon the bell goes, then it calls, “Pack up, And go with courage up the walkway.” … [The last part of the poem will be printed in the next issue of “Town and Country.”]

[Frank R. Brunner (1835-1908) was born in Greshville, Berks County on 24 January, 1835. After receiving his initial education in an eight sided schoolhouse, he enrolled in Union Seminary in New Berlin, PA. Subsequently he taught school in his home district for a few years before attending and graduating from Jefferson Medical School. He practiced his profession in Eshbach near Boyertown. Brunner died on 13 January, 1908, a victim of that Boyertown Opera House fire. While he wrote a dialect column for the Reading Adler for approximately 25 years, he is best known for his Dutch poetry, most of which express a fond memory of the days of his youth. They appeared in several popular Pennsylvania German publications of that time.]

Rescue a Friend

Luigi I was rescued when I was wandering a city neighborhood looking for food and shelter this winter. I was not out long because I did not have a winter coat. I smelled of petroleum product. A foster mom took me in and I got cleaned up. I love being with people and get along with other cats. I am talkative and do "happy feet" when I am petted. I am a dark silver tabby male with white paws; neutered, up to date on shots; Leukemia and FIV negative. About 2 years old.

Deadly Heartworm Incidence Inching Upwards submitted by SUE O’BRIEN

The bad news: the incidence of heartworm disease in pets is on the rise in the U.S., according to a recent survey by the American Heartworm Society (AHS). The good news: Heartworm disease is easily prevented, even in pets living in areas with the highest incidence rates. The AHS announced the results of its triennial Heartworm Incidence Survey, along with unveiling a new heartworm incidence map based on 2016 data from veterinary practices and shelters across the country. The average number of dogs diagnosed per clinic in 2016 rose by 21.7 percent over 2013 numbers when our last survey was conducted, says AHS president and veterinarian Dr. Christopher Rehm. “While the distribution of heartworm cases hasn’t changed dramatically since we surveyed veterinary practices three years ago, the average number of heartworm-positive dogs per clinic has increased.” Approximately 24 percent of respondents to the AHS survey reported seeing more heartworm cases in 2016 vs. 2013, while 19.8 percent reported a decline in their practice areas. Heartworm disease diagnosed nationwide No state in the U.S. is heartworm-free, according to the AHS survey, which revealed the top five states in heartworm incidence were Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas and Tennessee—all states that have been in the top tier since the AHS began tracking incidence data in 2001. Rounding out the top ten states were South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama and Florida. Among the top ten, only Alabama, Louisiana and Texas saw decreases in per-practice average heartworm incidence, while increases were noted in the other seven. Continued on page 51

(610) 760-8888 St. John Neumann Regional School Presents “The Living Stations” Written by CAITLYN KRATZER AND KELCI BUBSER

Wednesday, April 5th, Friday, April 7th, and Monday, April 10th, the students of St. John Neumann Regional School put on a presentation of what Jesus went through to save everyone from sin. Mrs. Diana Koma, the director of this amazing presentation, along with Mrs. Georgia Hodyl, took time after school every Thursday to work and practice with the students. The practices, which started in February, proved to be well worth it in 28

the end. “Living Stations” is not a show, it is a representation of the Catholic faith. The students truly believe in the message they are reenacting. “Stations” help many people, young and old, to better understand what Jesus went through. The presentation was free and you were welcome to come and pray with the students and other parishioners. We look forward to seeing you next year during Lent! Krysta Hankee Remembered at St. Patrick’s Cathedral Submitted by BILL & CHRIS HANKEE

In September of 2007, moments after 22 year old Krysta Hankee was declared brain dead she reached back into the realm of the living and saved the lives of five strangers. She saved 5 lives through organ donation, gave sight to two people and donated skin to the New York Firefighter’s Skin Bank. Advancements in medical science provides for this “life after death experience”. Krysta’s family, friends and Northwestern Lehigh community are proud of her choice to place “organ donor” on her Pennsylvania driver’s license. It was a clear statement to all that she wished for her love of life to continue. Krysta’s life saving donations took place at NYU Medical Center in Manhattan and her generosity is celebrated there as well as the Lehigh Valley. Because of her connection to New York City, Krysta’s parents (Bill and Chris) and her big brother Kyle, his wife Cheng and Krysta’s grandmother Mary Schuster were invited to St. Patrick’s Cathedral on April 22 to remember Krysta and other New York organ donors. The Manhattan Chapter of TRIO (Transplant

Recipients International Organization) held a service at the Cathedral to celebrate the “Gift of Life”. Two thousand people were in attendance at this year’s “Rejoice and Remembrance” service. The audience consisted of Donor families, organ and tissue recipients, surgical teams, members of the organ donation support community, friends, family and well-wishers. Chris, Bill and Kyle Hankee were among the seven speakers at the event. Chris read from scripture and in her speech noted that the rib given by Adam used in the creation of Eve was the first recorded transplant. Bill had the opportunity to give an overview of Krysta, telling of her ambitions and “love of life”. Kyle spoke the following words of Krysta’s gift and how she sparked her family and community to make a positive difference for others in her memory: “I'd like to speak briefly about how my sister's heroic gift of organ donation helped us to continue moving forward. It's been said "Sometimes in tragedy you find life's purpose". We took this to heart. Inspired by Krysta's foresight and altruism;

Positivity was born from tragedy and our community came together to form the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund. TO accomplish "our life's purpose" we established the following goals for the memorial fund: We help families with medical travel through our gas card program, We award leadership scholarships to exceptional students and We educate people about organ, tissue, and eye donation. Our Gas Card program, "Miles that Matter", is a need based initiative. The funds generated are not used for research, but solely for family services. These gas gift cards have assisted hundreds of families traveling for ongoing medical care and provided over 900,000 miles of driving for families in need. Our Scholarship program discovers and supports students working hard to develop leadership and community service skills. This is a performance based initiative for students exemplifying the same community strengthening traits we saw in Krysta: including friendship, commitment, scholastic achievement, and community service. date, over $90,000.00 has been awarded to young scholars. Our final goal is to support the mission of organ, tissue, and eye donation education. We volunteer our time to speak with students, civic groups, and others about the myths and facts of organ donation by telling Krysta's heroic story in the hopes of increasing registration and we participate in our local organ donor coalition activities. transforming the lives of those involved and adding purpose to the fund. The memorial fund was intended to make contributions in REMEMBRANCE of Krysta, but it's hard to forget someone who gave us so much to remember. It has now become a way to honor her integrity, principles, and character. Her act of generosity has grown, reaching far beyond her donation and has created the opportunity for the people of our community to support one another. Together we found that helping others has helped us to move forward. You all have the opportunity to move forward with purpose whether you are a donor family or recipient. Honor the donor in small ways, thinking of their qualities, principles, and character. You can then, look back with pride on the Hero that gave selflessly to others.

Slatington Veterans Memorial Update submitted by ROBERT STETTNER

The Slatington Veterans Memorial Committee has several updates to announce to the public. First and foremost the committee is still accepting orders for engraved bricks. Brick order forms are available at Slatington, Walnutport and Washington Township municipal offices, the Slatington Post Office, and the Slatington Library. You may also request a form be mailed to you by calling Dave at 610-7675519, or if you would prefer a form emailed to you, please email ddacreat@ptd.net, or you can message us on Facebook: Slatington Veteran’s Memorial to request a brick form. At the memorial site, grass has recently been planted, and later in spring flowers will be planted in the flower beds in front of the memorial by members of the Slatington Woman’s Club. In the past few weeks over 80 new bricks have been installed, and three out of the four brick beds are now filled to capacity with the names of area Veterans. The Veterans Memorial Committee still owes several thousand dollars to pay off construction costs associated with the memorial. No tax payer money has been or will be used to pay for these costs. The committee is relying on fundraisers, grants, public donations and bricks sales to raise the remaining necessary funds. The next fundraiser sponsored by the Veterans Memorial Committee will be a coin toss on Saturday May 6 from 10 AM – 2 PM at the Slatington Trailhead. We hope we can count on the public’s support on May 6 as you drive in and out of Slatington.

The Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission, in cooperation with the Slatington Merchants Group and the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority recently completed its sixth annual trail, park and playgrounds cleanup. New to the cleanup day this year was the partnership with the merchants group and the recreation authority, and the cleaning of the 500 & 600 blocks of Main Street, known as the business district. These newly forged partnerships helped attract a record number of volunteers, numbering over 40 individuals. The cleanup on Saturday April 23 began under cloudy skies and intermittent showers, but that did not deter the army of volunteers who were able to clean the following areas in Slatington: The Main

Prevention is key to reducing heartworm incidence On a more hopeful note, reducing heartworm incidence is clearly in the hands of veterinarians and pet owners. Among veterinarians who reported a drop in heartworm incidence since the 2013 survey, almost two-thirds attributed the change to owner behavior, including increased use of heartworm preventives and, among those already giving preventives, using the medication year-round. Veterinarians who reported incidence increases in their practices area agreed; roughly half cited failure to give preventives, skipping doses or failing to give preventives year-round as contributing factors. Other factors believed to contribute to incidence increases were weather conditions conducive to heartworm transmission in 2016 (heartworms are transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes) and the movement of infected dogs into practice areas. “We see the results of the AHS Incidence Survey as a good news/bad news story,” says Dr. Rehm. On one hand, heartworm incidence has increased in a number of states, especially those states with a history of high incidence. On the other hand, veterinarians are telling us that there is a straightforward solution to this: (1) convince more pet owners to use heartworm preventives and (2) convince them to protect pets year-round—with no lapses.” The AHS recommends year-round heartworm prevention for dogs, cats and ferrets. While dogs infected with heartworms can be treated, there are no approved treatment medications for cats and ferrets. Left untreated, affected pets may die and those that do recover may suffer lifelong consequences due to respiratory and circulatory system damage. Information on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heartworm disease can be found at heartwormsociety.org.
