From The Editor’s Desk. I’d say we have plenty to be thankful for these days. With all of the bad news – the Penn State scandal, the floundering economy, politicians both local and national concentrating more on tearing one another down with negativity rather than saying what they could to do to help their communities -it’s easy to be cynical. But, we must remember not to take the little things for granted, as cliché as that saying is. The Gazette staff would like to say thanks to

Joe Korba

all of the local people and businesses that have supported our publication for the past 26 years. We enjoy serving the communities and the people in our area and hope that you enjoy reading the Gazette every other week throughout the year. We couldn’t do what we do without your support. So, a very sincere THANK YOU to all of our readers. We hope that you have a very Happy Thanksgiving and take a minute to remember everything you have to be grateful for.

Family-Friendly Alternative To Black Friday Fall Family Fun Day Offers Kids Activities Black Friday can be one of the most stressful days of the year. Long lines, crowded stores and jammed parking lots can cause even the bestbehaved child to have an adult-sized meltdown. Families looking for a stress-free alternative can put the “happy” back into their holiday on Friday, November 25 from 1:00-3:00 pm during Fall Family Fun Day at The Ice Cream Lab in Walnutport.

Designed for the entire family, the afternoon includes an enchanting, costumed story teller who takes the children on an adventuresome journey, to help three friends find the real meaning of the holiday. Kids can also craft a “beary” special guest to take home, while enjoying apple cider, snacks and cookies. Then, working together, parents and children get creative to make and decorate one of the biggest sensations around – bite-size, holiday cake pops! These mini-morsels of delicious cake are dipped in chocolate and a variety of toppings to create amazing autumn treats. Of course no event at The Ice Cream Lab would be complete without their famous Make Your Own Sundae Experience, including the awardwinning*, seasonal specialties of Apple Spice and Pumpkin ice creams. Family events at The Ice Cream Lab fill quickly and space is limited. Cost is $12/child; $10 for additional children and $5 for adults; call (610) 554-0480 for reservations. The Ice Cream Lab is home to creative kid’s parties, field trips and sweet celebrations where education and entertainment are blended together for delicious fun!

Handel’s Messiah The highlight of the Bach and Handel Chorale’s Fall Concert season is the Chorale’s performance of George Frideric Handel’s sacred oratorio “ Messiah”. The Chorale brings it performance to the historic Mauch Chunk Opera House, 14 West Broadway, Jim Thorpe, PA on December 17, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. Joining the Chorale is a Festival Orchestra and Guest Soloists. All of the soloists for “Messiah” have sung with the Chorale in previous concerts. Heidi Hayes sings soprano and Jennifer Brown-Laubach contralto. Singing tenor is Jeffrey Dinsmore, while Richard Johnson sings bass. “Messiah” is probably Handel’s best known work and a tradition on Christmastime programs, although it was not well known until late in his life. Handel was born and trained in Germany, honed his mastery of every musical genre later while in Italy. He eventually

settled in England and for nearly five decades assimilated English operas and oratorios into his cosmopolitan and versatile Baroque musical style. “Messiah” reflects Handel’s abilities as a consummate operatic composer. The libretto was designed by Charles Jennens

Happy Birthday! Mary Parcell - on Dec. 3rd Chris Stine - 36 on Dec. 5th Kevin Struphar - 37 on Dec. 7th

(1700-73) who selected from the Old and New Testament with utmost care. Jennens was a literary scholar educated at Balliol College, Oxford, but he did not achieve broad recognition as he declined to be a part of the tumultuous political climate of the time. He was able to live in some comfort, however, and devote his time to artistic pursuits. When he was thirty, Jennens met Handel and became a life-long admirer and supporter of his music. In fact, before writing the libretto for “Messiah”, he provided the texts for a number of Handel’s works. “Messiah”like an opera is divided into three acts each with several scenes. Act I is the prophecy of Salvation and the coming of the Messiah. The chorus For Unto Us a Child Is Born” brings the joy of the Baby’s birth. Act II tells of the redemptive sacrifice as in the chorus “Surely He Hath Borne Our Griefs”. Finally, Act III gives us the promise of resurrection and redemption ending gloriously in the great Amen from “Worthy is the Lamb that Was Slain”. Reserved seating for the “Messiah” Performance is $20.00. Regular seating for Adults is $15.00, Children, $10.00. Seating for Seniors 65 and over is $10.00 as well. Tickets may be purchased online at http://www.mauchchunkoperahouse. com. Tickets can also be purchased in Jim Thorpe at Dimmick Memorial Library, 62 Broadway; Naturally Yours, 103 Broadway; Soundcheck Records, Inc., 23 Broadway; and by mail the Bach and Handel Chorale Office, 810 Carbon Ave. With each concert ticket, the purchases receives a restaurant voucher for 15% off an entree at the following partnering restaurants: Bear Appetit, Broadway Grille & Pub, Crave at 66, Dom ‘N Ali’s, Macaluso’s, Moya, P.J. Wehlihan’s at Platz’s, and Through the Looking Glass. A concert and meal combo make for a wonderful evening out or a Christmas gift.

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer

Depth Led the Lady Tigers to CL Title Mother Nature affected all fall sports this season, especially cross country. All the rain that was dumped on our area made for muddy courses for the runners to deal with. This factor made the fact that the Northwestern Lehigh girls’ cross country team had a perfect regular season with a record of 26-0 and a Colonial League title so much more impressive. The success was not unexpected as last year the lady Tigers finished third in the Colonial League with a record of 22-4. Head coach Chris Stitzel is expecting to continue this winning streak, “ We lose three seniors from our top seven [runners], but our top three runners were sophomore Haley Yost and two freshman. We were really deep this year. We feel that we have runners that can fill in at spots. We are really looking to compete and going for a league title again.” Yost was one of the Tigers’ best runners. She finished second at the league meet. Even though Haley is young she had success last year as a freshman too. She was fifth in the Colonial League in 2010. Although her second place finish was very impressive, Haley has aspirations for more, “I think I had a strong end of the season, but a rough

[beginning] and middle of the regular league meet season. I like to believe that I will continue to grow as a runner these next two years.”Yost has two more seasons to reach her individual goals and hopefully achieve more team accolades for Northwestern Lehigh on her way. “We had a goal this season to prove ourselves. In the pre-season, the papers were talking about how Notre Dame Green Pond had a great returning team and there was nothing about us. The girls were motivated...They were a great team and it was an honor to coach them. They were a great group of kids,” said Coach Stitzel. The cross-country situation at Northwestern is phenomenal. The girls as a team obviously dominated all of their competitors in the Colonial League and competed in the District 11 meet. Stitzel is an upbeat, enthusiastic coach and keeps a good atmosphere for his team. The young nucleus of runners, spearheaded by Yost, has the potential to lead them to a few more titles by the end of their high school careers. Tyler Trumbauer is a Sophomore at Northern Lehigh High School where he writes for the school paper. His column Extra Point will be a regular feature in the Gazette. Seiler Family welcomed to Historical Centre Recently, the Seiler family visited the Lehigh Township Historical Centre: Ron Seiler, Pat Seiler, Tracie Merkle, Adam Merkle, Alexis Merkle, Abigail Merkle, Tricia Seiler, Kevin Wagner, Taylor Seiler, Doneta Merkle, and Freddie Seiler. The family was impressed with the mural which Malcolm Gieske applied to the wall as the background for the textile display at the historical centre. Seeing relatives and workers on the mural and the machinery used at the Penn Keystone Knitting Mill brought back memories for the family. The factory was started in 1917 by Eugene Seiler, Jr. and continued in operation until 2000. A flat-bed knitting machine, an industrial sewing machine and a circular knitting machine were donated to the historical society. Samples of some of the products made on the machines are displayed. The Seiler brothers told how they worked on the machines on weekends when not in use by the workers. They both worked many years at the mill. Both of their parents worked at the mill and are pictured on the mural - the picture was taken about 1951.

Happy Thanksgiving! The Pilgrims had few choices of foods when they sailed to America on the Mayflower. There was salted beef, pork, fish and hardtack, a dry biscuit. It is thought that they had dried peas, beans, cheese and some butter, too. They had some fresh water when they started out, but it didn't take long for it to spoil.

Heroism Award Presented in Northampton On Saturday November 5, 48 Pennsylvania Kiwanians from Eastern and Northeastern, PA and Steve Zernhelt’s widow and 15 family members assembled for the Region 6 Annual Fall Meeting held at the Monroe Career Institute of Technology. This was not your normal Kiwanis Regional Meeting but rather a solemn and yet celebratory event to honor the memory of Steve Zernhelt who on June 26, 2010 was murdered along with 3 of his next-door neighbors. Steve’s widow and family were at the event to receive the Kiwanis International Foundation’s Robert P. Connelly Medal of Heroism award. The award is presented to those individuals who go above and beyond the normal call of duty and who risk physical harm or death to save the life of another human being. And that defined Steve Zernhelt. Always ready to help anyone who on that fateful day when he heard screams from the house nextdoor, knowing that there is a family living there with children immediately sprang into action and ran into the house only to be the fourth victim murdered by parolee Michael Ballard. As a result of Steve’s actions, William Walters

of the Kiwanis Club of Easton nominated him posthumously for the International award. As the event began Walters showed a five-minute video about the history of the Kiwanis International Foundation’s Robert P. Connelly Medal of Heroism award which was first presented in 1967 to honor Robert P. Connelly, himself a Kiwanian who had died while trying to save a young woman who had fallen in front of a speeding train in the Chicago area. Both lost their lives and Kiwanis created the award. By his unselfish action, Steve put tremendous and dramatic meaning into the phrase “personal involvement,” which is so much a part of Kiwanis philosophy. Steve Zernhelt was the epitome of all that Kiwanis strives to be. Since 1967, from Japan to Thailand to England to the USA, the Kiwanis International Foundation has honored more than 630 individuals who, like Connelly and Zernhelt, risked or gave their lives to save another. Only 12 of the awards have been presented to Pennsylvania residents and the only other Lehigh Valley award was presented in 2004 to Damion Smith who saved 2 young children from a burning car.

Tree Lighting at KCB The Kreidersville Covered Bridge Association (the "KCBA") will hold its annual tree lighting ceremony on the grounds surrounding the Kreidersville Covered Bridge on Saturday, December 10, between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. So what’s the big deal, right? How is this tree lighting any different from all others in the Lehigh Valley? This is how: (1) It's held at the historic and beautiful KCB, the last covered bridge in Northampton County, PA, (2) Santa arrives on an Allen Township Fire Company fire truck and emerges from the the 172-year old KCB bridge to greet the kids, and (3) We hold a BONFIRE! The bonfire is a big hit probably because they are rarely held these days. But bonfires are ancient rituals which really seem to engage our crowd in a warming and stimulating communal experience. The bonfire lights up and warms a large area but we also have scores of lit candles in glass jars twinkling all around the grounds. The KCB Gazebo is the stage for the tree lighting, pretty white lights twinkle while the crowd sings "O Christmas Tree". Simple and tasteful.

Northampton Area High School choral groups perform at the gazebo, which is always a highlight, and we have other musical acts, including saxophone duo Sammy “Sax” Leon and Danny Pany, to entertain. We do a little group caroling; singing is optional but people seem comfortable enough to sing along with the other non-musicals in the crowd! Free hot chocolate and cookies are dispensed. A CRAYOLA basket raffle and the sale of KCB merchandise are the "fund-raising" parts of the event but the rest of the festivities are all free to the public. It's a very low-key yet memorable event.

Moorestown Garden Club

The speaker for the November Moorestown Garden Club was John Drabik. Mr. Drabik informed the club that the 1.3 million deer in Pennsylvania are the cause of lots of damage to crops, forests and home gardens. Some of the ways to deter them from lunching on your plants is to string up aluminum pie plates (they don’t like the shine). You may also tie string through a box of Irish Spring soap and hang it on a tree. During the program judge, Marylyn Gockeler was busy looking at specimens and arrangements. Winners of the flower, gourds and vegetable specimens were Joan Boccabella, Jan Charney, Claire Cook, John Cook, Lois Frye, Linda Kortz, Marty Krautwald, Marianne Lesher and Evanne Maher. “Button Up Your Overcoat” arrangement winners were Joan Boccabella, Jan Charney, Lois Frey and Marianne Lesher. The winner in the “Autumn Wreath” competition was Evanne Maher. The Nomination Committee presented a slate of offices that we will vote on at our December get-together at the Barnhouse Village. A Touch of Dutch 19 Nowember 1959 Was uns wunnert iss eb’s en hadder Winder gebt. Nau loss eich net dehinne finne fer uns schreiwe, eb die alde Dinge all vergesse gehne. -Florence Baver November 19, 1959 I wonder if we’re going to have a hard winter. That is an old question that’s always debated every fall. Well an old saying is if the geese have a heavy down, that predicts a hard winter; or when

the sheep have a heavy coat, it will give a hard winter. Whether that holds out or not, I’ll leave to you. With Thanksgiving coming soon, I wonder what we call that breast bone in Dutch, that is called ‘wishbone’ in English. Who can give a Dutch name for ‘wishbone’? And what I also wonder is from where did the tradition come for two people to break that bone and make a wish? How did that become part of the Thanksgiving tradition? [The tradition is said to have come in with the Pilgrims on the Mayflower. It was probably brought to England by the Romans, who got that tradition from the Etruscans, an ancient civilization that predated them. -Translator] Then what was done years ago with that bone? I can still remember that we put that bone over our nose, like eyeglasses, when we were youngsters. Who can say more about the wishbone? Now don’t put off writing to me, lest the old traditions will be forgotten. February 11, 1960 A few months ago I asked you readers what the Dutch name was for that bone in poultry that we call ‘wishbone’ in English. For a long time we heard nothing from anybody, but now Ms N__ Petit from Wilson Borough called us and said that Ms. M__ Held from Nazareth saved all the “ Es Bobbelmaul Schreibt” articles from the (Nazareth) Item for the entire last year and she read the ‘Wishbone’ article. Ms. N__ then said that they called that bone ‘Pull Bone’ in her area. And she asked Mrs. Shupp about it and she called it ‘Wishbone’ [A direct translation of the English]. I think the two names are very appropriate. But I wonder if there are other names?

What are you curled up with? Sandman Author: Ian Kingsley When Paul Vincent becomes embroiled with a young unbalanced lad, Stevie Clark over a nearly dangerous accident concerning his young fourteen-year old daughter Leah, he hasn't a clue what the future would hold for him and his family. And neither did he really know his beautiful and flirtatious wife Sasha, who unfortunately was raped and murdered near their beach hut located in a popular coastal resort town on the south coast of England near Bournemouth. All evidence, according to Paul, seemed to point to Stevie as the culprit, however, in Psychology there is recognition of a kind of behavior known as cognitive bias which is used to describe many distortions in the human mind that can lead to perceptual distortion, inaccurate judgment, or even illogical interpretation. It is with this in mind, that Ian Kingsley hooks us in with his debut winner Sandman -an author who knows

how to draw an array of appealing characters, inject suspense, and paint scenes with the skill of a seasoned travel writer. In fact, Kingsley is the webmaster of his own travel website, synergise. com. With the yarn gathering force, readers can't help turn the pages compulsively, as we are seduced with small details and quick punchy dialogue that purposely misleads us in jumping to the conclusion that Stevie is the obvious murderer and rapist. And as we are to discover, and a concept that underlies all good mysteries, nothing is as it seems. We likewise fall into the same trap as Paul, who, by the way, doesn't know how to express his feelings concerning his murdered wife, after he painfully finds out that she was unfaithful to him and questions how much “hanky panky” and lovers did she indulge in during their supposedly happy marriage. It was true that he was a terribly Continued on Page 39

Local Dollars For Local Kids

Did you ever wonder what happens at Christmas to less fortunate children in our community? We have all seen Charles Dickens’s Christmas Carol story and watched as Scrooge brings gifts to the poor of the whole village. If you would like to contribute toward gifts for kids in our community who would normally go without seeing presents on Christmas morning, please contact Quota of Northampton. Contributions can include either new, unwrapped gifts of your own choosing or a financial donation for our club’s “elves” to shop with. Last year we were able to help 45 children in the Northampton school district have a wonderful holiday through the generous donations of individuals and local businesses. Last Christmas we added a new project. We operated a Christmas store for young clients of the Northampton Food Bank. Each child was able to pick out a gift for every member of their family at no charge. In addition to gifts for children we are looking for small gifts for adults and siblings. Our goal each year is to surpass the number of smiles we’re able to help supply … won’t you please help us? We will arrange for the purchase, wrapping and delivery of gifts for kids in our community. Book Review Continued from Page 35 jealous husband, however, little did he realize until after his wife's murder, that perhaps his jealousy had been justified. Then again, would his jealousy also lead to the police believing that he is the prime suspect in his wife's murder? What is intriguing about Sandman was that reading it made me think I was watching a movie focusing on several characters that all are subtly interwoven into the threads of each others lives. In this case, it turns out to be the lives of Stevie, Paul, Leah and another woman, Carol Davis, who was also a rape victim in the same vicinity where Paul's wife Sasha was murdered. Moreover, it is a novel that you may want to re-read, once for the sheer thrill of the story and again to fully absorb its implications.

Ian Kingsley has lived most of his life on the south coast of Dorset, England. He has written a number of non-fiction works on science and technology and has worked as a digital design engineer, technical author and technical publications manager on many military and commercial projections. Sandman is his first work of fiction and I do hope we hear more from this promising author. Reviewed by Norm Goldman, visit his site at www.bookpleasures.com.

October Happenings at Teddy Bear Cay Care

The Children and staff at Teddy Bear Day Care had an activity-filled October, highlighted by 2 special events. On October 6th, they welcomed firefighters from Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire Company to their center to help kick-off fire safety lessons. They showed an educational video, featuring Elmo, and then discussed just what to do in case of a fire. They then continued outside for a tour of a fire engine and got a closer look at the equipment firefighters must wear. The visit ended with special souvenir helmets and a photo with the special visitors. The children and staff of Teddy Bear Day Care thanks the Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire Company for their special visit.

How To Stay Safe Online This Holiday Season (NAPSI)—Many people look forward to holidays as a time to spend with friends and family, load up on Mom’s turkey and sing their favorite holiday jingles. For savvy shoppers, this time of year also offers a chance to take advantage of major discounts, whether you’re buying gifts for loved ones or yourself.

However, lured by the promise of getting the must-have toy of the season or the latest tech gadget at half the price, bargain hunters all too often fall for online scams to steal their personal and financial information. Although online shopping continues to be a popular an easy way for people to get their holiday shopping done, it can also open the door to scams from sneaky cybercrooks. According to Norton, the leading online security company, holiday e-mails with taglines like “You Have Received a Christmas Greeting Card!” and “Cash for the New Year” have already started appearing in people’s in-boxes. Although the messages can seem harmless, they may contain viruses and worms that will damage your computer or, worse, send you to websites designed to steal your e-mail and bank account information. In fact, Norton recently found that 73 percent of Americans have been victims of cybercrime in their lifetimes. Follow these tips to stay safe this season: Continued on Page 45

Stay Safe Online Continued from Page 44 • Check your list twice—If you receive a suspicious e-mail, whether it’s offering discounts that are too good to be true or is filled with grammatical errors, delete the message. It could be part of a scam to trick you into downloading a virus or giving away your personal information. • Find out which websites are “naughty” and “nice”—When conducting transactions online, make sure the website address contains “https”— which indicates an added layer of protection. Also, scan the entire Web page for a trust mark, such as the VeriSign Trust Seal. These marks demonstrate that a trusted company has taken comprehensive measures to certify security, online business ethics and customer privacy standards. • Don’t let scams turn your Black Friday into the blues—Use trusted online security software, like Norton Internet Security 2012 or a mobile solution like Norton Mobile Security, to make sure you’re protected against online threats and help ensure safe shopping, from home or on the go, this season. For more information on how to stay safe online, please visitwww.Norton.com.

Kids enjoy Safe Trunk or Treating

Over 200 children attended the “Trunk or Treat” party at Bethany Wesleyan Church on October 25th. This year’s theme was “A Trip Around the World”. The “Italy” table won first prize in the table competition. Nick Everett won First Prize in the 6 to 8 year olds with his “Around the World in 80 Days” costume and Darby Pender won First place in the 9 to 12 year olds representing the country of Romania. The children enjoyed pony rides, a hay ride, face painting, lots of games and tons of candy! Thank you to all those who decorated tables and helped in any way to make this great night for the children!

Recipe Round-Up Bringing A New Twist To The Holiday Table (NAPS)—Americans have long celebrated the holiday season with the classic favorite, homemade pumpkin pie. This year, treat family and guests to a delicious new twist on the pumpkin pie standard. Topped with whipped cream and warm Biscoff sauce, this unique recipe elevates the beloved tradition to a new level of indulgence. Biscoff Pumpkin Pie Pastry for a 10-inch deep-dish pie shell or 1 refrigerated rolled pastry 1⁄2 cup Biscoff Spread 1⁄2 cup sugar 2 large eggs 1 (15 oz.) can solid pack pumpkin 1 (12 oz.) can evaporated milk 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1⁄2 teaspoon ground ginger 1⁄4 teaspoon nutmeg Whipped Cream with Biscoff Spread sauce* Heat oven to 425˚ F. Line a 10-inch deep-dish pie plate or quiche dish with pastry; flute edges. Whisk together Biscoff Spread, sugar and eggs in a large bowl. Stir in remaining ingredients; whisk well and pour into dish. Bake 10 minutes; reduce oven temperature to 350˚ F. Continue to bake 35 to 40 more minutes or until center is set. Cool on wire rack at least 2 hours before serving at room temperature or chilled with desired topping. Makes 8 servings. Whipped Cream with Biscoff Spread sauce: In a medium bowl, whip ½ cup whipping cream with a hand mixer until soft peaks form; add sugar to desired taste and whip until stiff peaks form. Heat 1½ cups of Biscoff Spread in microwave for 45 seconds or until melted. Top each slice of pie with whipped cream and drizzle with warm sauce. Biscoff Spread was created using Biscoff Cookies (those little caramelized crisps you’ve likely had on a Delta Air Lines flight) and has the same lightly sweet taste, but with a smooth, creamy texture. It is low in sugar, contains 88 calories per serving and is an all-natural, nutfree alternative to peanut butter. For additional Biscoff Spread recipes, including festive Chocolate Truffles, Tiramisu and more, visit www. biscoff.com. *Biscoff Spread is available in 14-ounce (400 gram) jars at www.biscoff.com or through retailers nationwide.
