From The Editor’s Desk. A few weeks ago I watched a particularly riveting and powerful story on the newsmagazine Frontline on PBS. The piece was about a group of combat Veterans who came home to Fort Carson -near Colorado Springs, Co - from a particularly violent tour of duty in Iraq. Many soldiers in the 4th Infantry Division’s 4th Brigade Combat Team turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with memories of the heavy combat in the insurgent stronghold of Ramadi where they were deployed in 2004. The stories these men told reporters about what they had experienced in Iraq were horrifying and, although some members of the unit actually attempted suicide, they didn’t get any counseling before returning home. The murder rate among the division’s 3,500 soldiers from Fall ’07 to Fall ’08 was 114 times the average for Colorado Springs. In 2007 a group of soldiers, led by a severely disturbed Iraq war vet named Kenneth Eastridge, went on a crime spree that left a fellow soldier dead and another civilian women in critical condition after the group

robbed her, stabbed her and then ran her over with their car. The men were eventually caught and all were diagnosed with mental problems related to combat and brain injuries suffered during their time in Iraq. They’re all currently serving long prison sentences. I don’t relate these stories to cast a negative light on veterans, in fact, just the opposite. The psychological damage of warfare has been called many things throughout the years – shell shock, battle fatigue, combat stress and now post-traumatic stress syndrome. For a long time the disease went untreated – leaving many vets addicted to drugs or alcohol and homeless. With so many advances in medical technology to treat injured soldier’s physical wounds we owe it to them to treat their psychological wounds as well. After servicemen and women give so much we can’t just turn our backs on them. It’s difficult for people suffering from posttraumatic stress to seek help; some don’t even realize they need it. It’s often hard to talk about combat with civilians but if you know a vet that you suspect is having a hard time there are plenty of resources to seek help including the VA and various veteran’s organizations. The website – http://www.ptsd.va.gov/- is a good place to start. Veterans and active duty Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, Sailors and Guardsmen deserve our thanks, but sometimes they also need our support.

Novel Holiday Gift GiviNG ideas How often during the holiday gift giving season does one hear friends and relatives say “what can we get for Johnny and Susie (our young adult child and spouse) for the holidays”. Isn’t it often a challenge? Young married couples nowadays seem to start off with most of the appliances, fixtures and “things” that they “need”; certainly this is much different than the prior generations who acquired conveniences and “things” as they could afford them and often used mom and dad’s and/or grandma and grandpa’s “furniture, appliances” and “things” for many years”. Right, wrong or indifferent, the global economy has brought to the market so many goods at inexpensive prices that nearly all young couples are abundantly supplied – hence the question what gift can we get for Johnny and Susie for the holidays? Johnny and Susie may well have a house, perhaps children and plenty of “things” but have they provided for the security of their loved ones? Have they: a. designated guardians, the persons who would raise their children in the event of the deaths of Sally and Johnny; b. established a trust to manage the assets and to meet the economic needs of the family; c. prepared a Financial Power of Attorney so that the “business aspects” of their lives can go on in the event of a debilitating incapacity; d. completed Healthcare Powers of Attorney to name medical or healthcare advocates to help decide on the vast variety of medical treatment options (including the no treatment option); e. completed Living Wills/Health Care directives to make those somber and difficult end of life decisions somewhat easier. What to get young married couples for Christmas – something they probably do not have, have not considered, and might even feel they do not need due to their young ages and feelings of “invincibility” – encouragement, to engage in basic estate planning and from parents or grandparents’ perspective, the gift of underwriting the cost for establishing a basic and necessary estate plan for the young adults and their families. Isn’t it ironic that all of us may search for the latest, updated, fancy coffee or cappuccino maker as a supplement to the two or three coffee making machines already possessed by younger family members while sometimes overlooking the obvious and profound necessities for the security of the young family?

On Our Cover
We chose a classic poster by illustrator Sidney Riesenberg as our cover in honor of Veterans Day. The original illustration, entitled “Over the Top for You,” was released in 1918 as a promotion for Americans to buy war bonds to support the troops, known as doughboys during this particular conflict, fighting in brutal trench warfare during WWI. Unfortunately WWI, billed the “war to end all wars,” wasn’t the end of armed conflict. In 1941 young men and woman were once again called upon to fight, and die, for their country. The United States officially joined the war against the Axis powers after the Japanese attacked the military base at Pearl Harbor without warning. The “day that would live in infamy” brought the war to our shores and quickly reversed the isolationist ideology that was pervasive at the time among Americans. They woke up a sleeping giant by ambushing us and the United States was ready to fight. Soon after the Pearl Harbor attack the country began to mobilize for total war against Japan, Italy and Germany. As the young men went off to the European and Pacific theaters of war women began to work in factories, building tanks and weapons. Rationing of goods, buying war bonds and planting victory gardens to save essential food for servicemen overseas were essential to win against the Axis powers. Because of the resources needed to wage total war, the United States began to utilize posters to broadcast pro-war messages. From 1941 to 1945 The Office of War Information designed over 200,000 different posters for the home front war effort. We join with all Americans to say “THANK YOU” to the Veterans who are with us today and those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

Veterans Day The American War Library says a veteran is defined by federal law, moral code and military service as “Any person who served for Any length of time in Any military service branch.” On November 11, 1918, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the end of “the war to end all wars – World War I,” as Armistice Day. In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower signed legislation changing the name Armistice Day to Veterans Day. This was done because World War II and the Korean War created millions of new veterans. I was a child of that era and veterans were truly honored for their service and sacrifices. Now at age 64, a veteran of 10 years active army duty during the Vietnam era, with a family that included a WWII Prisoner of War and another Killed in Action, the war in Afghanistan has added another page to my family’s service. My youngest son, Lance Corporal Joseph L. Faro, United States Marine Corp, was severely wounded in Afghanistan on May 19, 2010, by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). After nearly 17 months of hospitalization at the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) in Bethesda, Maryland, and the VA Poly Trauma Center in Richmond, Virginia, and therapy at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation in

Easton, he is on the way to a full recovery. As such, Veterans Day has a new added meaning for my family. Unfortunately, to many, Veterans Day only means a day off from work. In 1968 Public Law 90363 was signed into law to give federal employees 3 day weekends thus mandating a roving date for Veterans Day. In 1975 Public Law 94-97 was signed into law to restore November 11 as the official date for Veterans Day as this was the overwhelming desire by virtually every service organization, state legislatures and the American people. We all take much for granted but taking our veterans for granted should not be one of them. Think of all who gave their life for you and me. Think of the millions who served and of the many that came home to a lifetime of pain and discomfort by virtue of serving their country. Think of the many others who served but did not suffer the wounds of war. They too served honorably with the same odds that their lives could be on the line at any given moment. While I have always supported and respected first responders like Police, Fire Fighters, EMT’s and so forth I believe my own aging has given me Continued on Page 19

Veterans Day Continued from Page 18 the wisdom to see these “defenders” as our troops at home. They support us while our military supports us abroad. Since 9/11 many of these same defenders have been called to active duty and become statistics as Killed in Action (KIA) or Wounded in Action (WIA). Let us not take for granted all who serve this nation in one manner or another. The next time you see an active duty member or a veteran, a police officer, a fire fighter or any other first responder, stop and thank them for allowing you and I to live the life we assume as our right! As such, we have a duty to honor them! Let this Veterans Day lead us to becoming more educated about this day and let’s honor America’s heroes and honor our flag. Whether you are for or against the wars in Afghanistan or Iraq always support the troops, be respectful of each other and thankful you have the freedoms you do. Honor all veterans, not just once a year but every time you see a veteran because they served you every day they wore the uniform and many for years after they took their uniform off. In closing, for those so inclined or daring I encourage you to visit a military or VA hospital on Veterans Day or any day possible. I spent parts
of the last 17 months in such surroundings when my son was wounded severely in Afghanistan. If you do go, I guarantee you will come home changed after seeing firsthand what so many have given for you to live life as you choose. And then there are those with the invisible wounds of war: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury. These wounded warriors deserve everything we can do for them. Bob Faro

It's time for the fall harvest! I like to pick apples in the orchards. This very important fruit has been grown by people and used for food as long as anyone can remember. NOVA Today’s ambulances arrive during a life threatening emergency and care is provided immediately at the scene and during the transport to the hospital. A modern day ambulance will arrive with all of the best tools and staff available. Not only has equipment become more sophisticated and expensive but educational requirements, training requirements, staffing and a necessity to store vehicles and their medications in a climate controlled environment have affected expenses. The average cost of an Advanced Life Support call is $875.00 and the average compensation received by the corps in the form of payment by Medicare $365.00, Medicaid $120.00 $200.00 and private insurance can cover the entire bill to none of the bill. Northern Valley EMS (NOVA) is the not for profit primary Advance Life Support provider of Emergency Medical Services for the residents of North Whitehall Township, Washington Township, Slatington Borough, Walnutport Borough and parts of Lowhill Township staffed by 38 paid full and part time Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics and Pre Hospital Registered Nurses and 20 volunteers. NOVA provides cutting edge Emergency Medical Services over a geographical area serviced by 9 fire departments at an annual operating budget in excess of one million dollars. Advanced Life Support crews respond to 911 calls on a 24 hour, 365 day per year basis from stations in Ormrod and Slatington ensuring a rapid response. Basic Life Support Crews are on duty during the evening and for special community events. In addition, NOVA operates a volunteer wheel chair van service providing non emergency transportation supplementing its ambulances. There are several factors, working together, responsible for NOVA’s ability to provide care. Consolidation is one of the most important factors, which has allowed NOVA to provide excellent care without suffering financial hardship or closure unlike many other corps in the State. This is tantamount since emergencies schedule themselves based upon when an emergency service provider is in or out of service. A second and equally important factor to NOVA’s providing care is the level of cooperation from fire departments and level of support from the municipalities in which the corps serves. The State of Pennsylvania requires that municipalities provide emergency medicals services. As a result, the Borough of Walnutport, the Borough of Slatington, Washington Township, and North Whitehall Township all provide the corps with financial and in kind support. During the past few years NOVA’s services to Walnutport, Slatington and Washington Township have been provided from Walnutport’s Diamond Fire Company and presently by invitation from the Slatington Borough and Slatington Fire Department. Since
both Fire Departments were already using their buildings with fixed expenses regardless of whether or not the ambulance was would be housed inside, the invitations extended to NOVA were made at no additional cost creating a win win for NOVA, the fire departments, municipalities and constituents. NOVA has, in kind, updated crew quarters, of both fire departments as well as the installation of internet access and emergency instruction. These new levels of consolidation and cooperation have produced ingenious economies of scale resulting in savings for all concerned. The cost savings far exceed any contemplated opportunity cost and are perhaps the greatest success of mention. If a single municipality would incur the cost of providing its own emergency medical services in order to comply with the State’s requirements, the costs could reach the hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. Assuming that the costs for a municipality to provide their own ambulance service was simply equal to that of operating a $350000 police force that municipality is still receiving one million dollar emergency medical service from NOVA; over 3 times that of what they would pay for on their own. At current levels of contributions municipalities that work with NOVA are providing their constituents with million dollar emergency medical service for 5-6% of the cost of a police force and 1-2% of NOVA’s entire operating budget! The compelling conclusion is that the municipalities that work with NOVA save hundreds of thousands of dollars per year annually when compared to having to incur the cost of providing the service on their own. The decision makers within the municipalities who support NOVA should be applauded for taking the necessary steps to far exceed the minimums required by the State of Pennsylvania at such a fraction of the cost. Prior to this coming November election, please take the opportunity to contact your local representatives in order to educate yourself and thank them for maintaining this relationship in your best interests at minimal cost to you! They should be applauded for making the right choices prior to the time the reality of an emergency presents itself. The final factors NOVA attributes to its ability to provide care are its staff, volunteers, auxiliary and subscribers. NOVA would also like to thank all of those who help the corps strive to meet the modern day expectations of Emergency Medical Service along with those who have served our Country. Servicemen and Women, thank you s for keeping us safe! If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact NOVA at its Business Office at (610)2621075 or contact one of the members of its Board of Directors. Slatington A Continuous Venture Several years ago State Representative Julie Harhart, Slatington Borough Manager John Kasten and the Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce formed the “Bridge Club”. The primary focus of the Bridge Club was to bring together the municipalities of Slatington, Walnutport, Washington Township and community service groups to ensure the installation of the new General Morgan Bridge on the Main Street of Slatington took place with minimal negative impact to our Northern Lehigh Community with hopes to create some positive momentum. Fred Rentschler of Rentschler Chevrolet was chosen as chair. Local businesses, community leaders and local service groups responded with uncommon results. The General Morgan Bridge was completed in less than one construction year, PennDot and its contractors treated Bridge Club with great respect. With little negative impact on the community or our schools a new bridge appeared. A major success and a direct result of dedicated individuals and groups working together in support of our community. State Representative Julie Harhart, Members of the Slatington Borough Council, Washington Township Supervisors, Lehigh County, the Chamber of Commerce, the Walnutport Canal Association, the Walnutport Playground Association, the Women’s Club of Slatington, the Northern Lehigh School District, the Lions Club, the Northern Lehigh Historical Society, Future Focus, the Rotary, the Mason Lodge & Eastern Star, the Northern Lehigh Community Center, Lehigh Engineering, Orkin Steel and the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit all gave of their time and assets. While Fred Rentschler managed the Club with all expectations of success, no one could have predicted the momentum that would carry forward. Being an area with limited resources the Bridge Club quickly realized the aforementioned list of Volunteers represent the backbone of our community. If this Club could become a more permanent Group to minimize duplication of efforts what could it do to improve the area for families and its youth?

Backed by the Borough of Slatington, Washington Township, the GNLCC, the Mason Lodge & Eastern Star, the Slatington Lions, the Rotary, Future Focus, the NL Historical Society and Walnutport Playground association the “Venture Group” was ratified into being. Now open to the public and all community organizations the Venture Group meets the last Wednesday of each month at 7pm in the Slatington Borough Hall. Each participating organization represents their organization with one vote and an invitation to participate is not a requirement. The GNLCC was chosen as Chair of the group and the Historical Society its Treasurer. It’s all Volunteer. The volunteer participating organizations together with the Venture Group, Lehigh County, the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor DC&R and PennTeleData/Blue Ridge Communications (that’s right Wi Fi) have improved the former Slatington High School site, improved the Slatington Trailhead, help highlight the Canal and Lehigh Gap Nature Center provide great educational and recreational experiences to those inside and outside of our community. These volunteers apply for grants, donate of their labor, time and money providing the necessary efforts in the hope of putting our community on the map. The sum total of these grants, in kind services and donations have saved our community hundreds of thousands of dollars. The Trailhead bathrooms and pavilion would have cost our municipalities and our taxpayers in excess of $400,000 if not for our volunteers and local businesses. We now have lists of community activities and attractions that provide enjoyment for our local community and attract patrons from outside the Northern Lehigh School District. The Gathering, Canal Days, Rodale/D&L Sponsored 500 member Bike a Thons and Marathons, the Duck Race, July 4th Heritage Day, Walnutport Playground Festival, the Halloween Parade (oldest in the United States), Community Center activities and an active volunteer Swimming Pool that cools the spare time offered by the hot summer months. As you travel through and use the areas of our community take note and take the opportunity to contact your local representatives directly. Discuss thoroughly the importance of these our backbones, thank them for their support, share with them these hopes now becoming reality and remember to vote with these hopes in mind this coming November 8th. VETERANS DAY 2011 IN MEMORY AND HONOR… During the past year, we have had the privilege of serving the families of Veterans. We are honored to be of service to them in their time of need, just as their loved one was there in our time of need. On Veterans Day, we pay tribute to those who served our country in the name of Freedom, the same Freedom that allows us to serve them. Our prayers are with all the Veterans, their families, and with the brave men and women serving our country today. We also wish to thank those from our area’s veteran service groups who volunteer their time in honor guards and firing squads bestowing the greatest honor for their deceased comrades. William R. Winter Vacation Tanning, Part II Last issue we talked about how getting a base tan before you go away to your tropical paradise helps cut down on the vacation sunburn and increases winter vacation enjoyment. This article will share some tips on how to maximize efforts to get that great base tan! 1. Start early! Base tans don’t develop in a week or two. Give yourself at least a month before vacation to get a great base tan. 2. Make sure the salon you go to, evaluates your skin type and adjusts your tan time so that you do not burn. If you burn you will damage your skin, it’s painful and it does not help develop melanin (the material that creates the darker layer in your upper skin) to create a protective layer and then you will have to start all over. 3. Moisturize your skin! Moisturized skin is healthier and can produce melanin better to bring out a richer, deeper tan. 4. Be consistent. You don’t have to tan every single day of the month before you go on vacation but you need to be consistent. Every other day is perfectly wonderful to get a base tan. Your skin begins to produce melanin and will continue to produce melanin for three days. So if you tan every other
day or every second day you are triggering melanin production to build a great tan while still getting your everyday things done too. The key is consistency like a Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule for tanning or Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. 5. Protect your eyes and lips! Your eye lids and lips are the thinnest layers of skin on your body. No matter where you tan, what type of beds you tan in, or when you tan, PLEASE make sure you wear proper eye protection and a lip balm with SPF in it. 6. Ask questions! Don’t be afraid to ask your salon attendant to explain something that is unclear… the way your skin produces a tan, a lotion, the way a machine works. The more you understand the more comfortable your experience will be. These basic tips will help maximize results while minimizing time investment on a daily basis and get you well on your way to a great base tan for your perfect winter getaway! Partnership halte mit Property. Gsundheit. -Florence Baver October 27, 1955 Next week we have Halloween again. I don’t know any Dutch word for that. Who does? Around Halloween time we hear much talk about witches and ghosts. Today, then, we want to tell a little ghost story that was supposed to have happened around Crow Hill (near Bally). There was a farmer that lived nearby on an old farm that was very run down. He had a large family, but there was one bedroom that was always unused. When a peddler came by and asked to stay overnight, the farmer was always good hearted and let him sleep in the bed that was not used. But the big trouble was that a ghost, with a white cloth over himself, came every night and the one who was in bed become speechless until the ghost went away. One evening a calligrapher (baptism certificate writer) came to sleep there. Around midnight the ghost came again. The man in the bed said, “What do you want?” Then the ghost said, “You are the first person to speak to me, now I’ll tell you what I want and then I’ll go away and get my rest. Before I died, I buried a lot of money in the hearth. Come with me then I’ll show you where it is.” The calligrapher went down to the kitchen with the ghost and started digging where the ghost showed him and by the next morning he had a large pile of money. He gave the farmer half of it and no one ever saw the ghost anymore when they slept in that room. A little more about the Amish people: There are very few that don’t pay cash when they buy something. And they are not people that run around wildly like some of us often do and yet we get nowhere till the day is over. Also, the farms are in the man’s name; the women don’t hold joint title. Good health to all.

LT Historical Society Continued from Page 38 2004, Homes For Our Troops, build specifically adapted homes for severely injured veterans. CAT Country 96 has teamed up with Homes For Our Troops of Bethlehem to build a home for Kislow, who sustained a traumatic brain injury and lost his right leg after an attack in his first deployment to Afghanistan. In June of 2005, Blue Valley Builders, a construction company based in Moore Township (Mike Kemmerer, co-owns Blue Valley Builders with his parents) offered its services, donating hundreds of hours in planning and labor. The home is located on about two acres of land and consists of three bedrooms and a bonus room, each of which include about 2,600 square feet of space. It is a new home and it will allow Kislow to get around, give him total accessibility and independence. The home should be ready for Kislow and his family to move in by late fall. Everyone should honor and thank all who served and sacrificed to defend liberty and freedom. Submitted by Jean Kosc, Director Lehigh Township Historical Society

Slatington Elementary Students Receive the Gift of Words Central Grange # 1650 of Germansville, recently donated A Student’s Dictionary to all third and fourth grade students at Slatington Elementary. Two hundred sixty-five students were thrilled to receive a dictionary filled with words, definitions, and additional useful facts and information for their personal use. One enthusiastic fourth grader was overheard saying, “We can actually use these!” The goal of the donation, which is a National Grange initiative, is to help students learn to use the English language effectively and to assist them with their education. This initiative also assists teachers in helping students become active readers, good writers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners. A dictionary may be a small gift, but it is a powerful tool that helps students with their learning. Thanks to Central Grange, Slatington Elementary students are well prepared to embark on a bright future! The Grange is a family fraternal organization, which meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. The whole family can attend meetings
and can be involved in many ways. Children ages five to fourteen even conduct their own meetings. Members are dedicated to the betterment of the American way of life through community service, education, legislation and fellowship. The Grange teaches the values of cooperation, responsibility and service.

St. Paul’s UCC of Indianland Historical Markers The history of the church began with the earliest Lutheran and Reformed German settlers to the area. The congregation was established in 1748 when a Lutheran pastor was requested. The first church built at the location of the current church was a log structure in 1756. A cemetery was established at that time and burials began on either side of where it is believed that church was located. The first known burial, because of his tombstone, is Wilhelm Best 1713- 1762. Over the years, three churches are built with the current sanctuary in 1876. A school house was built in 1865 to provide an education for local children. The UCC congregation became the sole denomination in 1972. Historical Markers were placed at three sites: the recently restored Cemetery and Graveyard, the church, and the School House which has been restored by the Lehigh Twp. Historical Society as a one room school house and opened as a Museum. With the encouragement of the Northern Lehigh Future Focus organization the same colors and design was selected that has been used on the recently installed Historical Markers in the Walnutport, Slatington and now Lehigh Township.
These areas have been closely connected over the years. An example is Wilhelm Best for whom there is a historical marker along Rt. 145 in Walnutport. His farm, at the time of his death (1762), was located between the Lehigh River and Bertsch Creek and he would have been a member of St. Paul’s. Best fought alongside his son in the French and Indian War. He was involved in requesting the government assistance to protect the area from Indian Raids that resulted in the forts that were built for that purpose. He is the first know burial at St. Paul’s and his tombstone remains legible today. His descendents and the Best name have been associated with Walnutport area throughout the subsequent years. You are invited to visit these historic sights. They are located at the intersection of Maple and Almond Roads off of Rt. 248. Submitted by Nancy Stott, Church Historian

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
Parkland’s Focus is their Key to Success
The Trojans boys’ soccer team had a very successful 2011 regular season. They finished with a record of 15-4 overall and 12-2 in the Lehigh Valley Conference. The man at the helm of this oft victorious squad is first year head coach, Pat Birns. This is also Birns’ first year in the Parkland boys’ soccer program. He spent the last two seasons as the assistant coach of Parkland’s biggest rival, Emmaus. On top of having a remarkable regular season the Trojans also won the Lehigh Valley Conference championship by beating Liberty by a score of 1-0 in the semi-finals and breezing by Easton 5-0 to capture the title. It shouldn’t be a surprise that Parkland shutout both of their opponents in the LVC playoffs because in 12 out of their 15 regular season wins they held their opponent scoreless. I asked Coach Birns who deserved credit for the shutouts. “I don’t think it is our goalkeeper or our back 4 defenders, it is all eleven guys. They really bought

in to playing defense. We play defense wherever the ball is. We start playing defense when we are attacking. When we shutout the other team it is because we have done our job,” he said. Defense though is not their number one strength according to junior forward Colin McConnell, “Our chemistry as a team [is our biggest strength]. Also our team has good depth with our talent and technical skills. Our new coach gets the best out of us and he is a good leader. He has really made a difference; he has brought kids that haven’t played with each other very often and put us together like a team that has been playing for years.” These players not only have a great leader in their head coach but, in their two team captains, junior center midfielder Nick Hutchinson and senior defender Mike Lawler. Birns credits them with keeping the team focused and making sure the players communicate well on the field. On Friday, October 28th, Parkland faced off against Easton again in a playoff game but, this time it was in the 2nd round of the class AAA District 11 tournament. Parkland’s defense was stellar in the first half against the Red Rovers Continued on Page 53

Betty Thomas Continued from Page 45 “She’s one of a kind, and she is going to be missed,” she said. Betty, who started at the bank in March of 1987, said that she is going to miss her coworkers and customers. “The bank has been a wonderful place to work, with lots of special happy moments throughout the years,” Betty recalled with a smile. She is planning on using her newfound free time to enjoy all of her grandchildren, who are very active in local sports and to do some traveling. “I’m free for the first time since I began working when I was 16. I did have a short break in ’64 when I had twins,” Betty said. Here is to wishing Betty a very happy retirement!

Parkland Soccer Continued from Page 49 but, Easton countered with some superb defense of their own. At halftime the score was 0-0. Easton scored first in the 2nd half. Parkland retaliated with three unanswered goals courtesy of Hutchinson, McConnell and Steven Guetzlaff. The Trojans were on top when the final whistle blew to advance to the District 11 class AAA semifinals where they matched up against Emmaus. By the time of publishing for this issue, Parkland and Emmaus would already have squared off (Game is set for Tuesday, November 1st starting at 7:30pm at Whitehall High School) barring any weather postponements of the game. If the Trojans win they advance to the finals and will face either Stroudsburg or Pocono Mountain East on Thursday, November 3rd starting at 7:30pm at Whitehall High School. “When you come in to Parkland athletics, championships and titles are what they expect. Coming in to this year, we expected to contend for the LVC title but, winning it was a little unexpected,” said Coach Birns. It was a daunting task Pat Birns had in front of him. He knew coming to Parkland that he had to have a team that contended. He surpassed that benchmark by a long shot. He took an already great squad at Parkland and has transformed them in to an LVC boys’ soccer powerhouse. His squad has the firepower and tenacity to continue in the district tournament and contend for the state title.
Slatington Man Honored for Heroism
Residents from Northern and Northeastern Pennsylvania were honored for acts of heroism or commitment to burn education this evening at the sixth annual Valley Preferred Spirit of Courage Awards Celebration held underneath the Nite Lites tents at Lehigh Valley Hospital— Muhlenberg. The program was started locally by Valley Preferred, Lehigh Valley Health Network and the Burn Prevention Network to recognize persons who go “above and beyond” to perform a heroic act to save someone from burn deaths or injury. “The Valley Preferred Spirit of Courage Awards provides a unique opportunity to honor those who put themselves in harms way to save lives and prevent burns,” said Dan Dillard, director of the Burn Prevention Network. “It’s our way

of thanking them for the selfless, yet sometimes thankless acts of courage they have performed.” Valley Preferred Spirit of Courage Award was given toWayne Sheckler of Slatington for rescuing an elderly woman from a burning home in March of this year. A fierce three-alarm fire gutted two homes and damaged three others in Slatington on March 30. Fortunately for two particularly vulnerable residents, mail carrier Wayne Sheckler was in the neighborhood. Sheckler knew an 84-year-old woman was staying in the home that was on fire. Before the fire department arrived, he rescued the woman and then proceeded to the home next door, where he knew a hearing-impaired woman lived. There he guided Mrs. Alice Rosario out to safety before the fire spread to her home. It’s said that neither wind, nor rain, nor snow can deter a mail carrier. Neither can fire!
Joke Corner - Ploughing the land A husband and wife were driving down a country lane on their way to visit some friends. They came to a muddy patch in the road and the car became bogged. After a few minutes of trying to get the car out by themselves, they saw a young farmer coming down the lane, driving some oxen before him. The farmer stopped when he saw the couple in trouble and offered to pull the car out of the mud for $50. The husband accepted and minutes later the car was free. The farmer turned to the husband and said, “You know, you’re the tenth car I’ve helped out of the mud today.” The husband looks around at the fields incredulously and asks the farmer, “When do you have time to plough your land? At night?” “No,” the young farmer replied seriously, “Night is when I put the water in the hole.”
