The San Francisco Giants are World Champions and my least favorite morning ritual— scraping the ice off the windshield—has begun. Where did the time go? It seems like just yesterday I was following the Red Sox during spring training with optimism for the new baseball season and looking forward to warm weather. Now we’re looking ahead to next year and plotting and planning some exciting changes for the Gazette. I hope, as always, that you guys enjoy this edition.

Submitted by TRICIA LEHMAN Rep. Julie Harhart (R-Lehigh/Northampton) today announced Slatington Borough will be receiving $139,600 for traffic improvements under PennDOT’s Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) program. Funding for ARLE comes from fines from red light violations at 28 intersections in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania’s ARLE program aims to improve safety at signalized intersections by providing automated enforcement at locations where data shows red-light running has been an issue. “This grant for Slatington will enable the borough to make needed upgrades to ensure better community safety,” said Harhart. “I am pleased that out of a total of 226 applications for funding, Slatington’s was one of the select few that were awarded grants through the program.” Slatington will use the funding to upgrade the Route 873 (Main Street) and Church Street intersection’s pedestrian signal heads, install curb ramps and add technology that improves traffic flow for emergency responders. Slatington’s grant was part of a total of $6.6 million in ARLE funding that is being distributed to 37 municipalities statewide to fund 41 safety projects. Projects improving safety, enhancing mobility and reducing congestion were considered for funding.

Humble Hearts For Hope
I
By Danielle S. Tepper
As told by President Brenda Detweiler
t can be easy to forget, as we toil through our daily troubles, that the smallest opportunities available to us are the direct result of a soldier’s sacrifice. Too often we take for granted what our men and women in the armed forces are fighting for. Therefore, it’s important to remember that there are ways we can help them that require no more of us than a little time and energy. In honor of Veterans Day and our annual nonprofit/volunteering issue, we spotlight a local organization trying to do just that: give back. Humble Hearts For Hope, a nonprofit based in Plainfield Township committed to serving U.S. troops overseas, officially began in March of 2011, after spending approximately a year in the brainstorming stages. Brenda Detweiler of Nazareth had begun to see a need for soldier assistance on a local level in the Lehigh Valley area. “I put a lot of thought into it and started grabbing people that I knew may be interested and those people are still with us now,” explained Detweiler. “We sat down and set it up through the state of PA. It took off from there. We opened three years ago on the basis that we were assisting our deployed troops, not injured troops or those who are helped by large corporations.” Continued on page 12 >>>

www.townandcountrygazette.com | November 6, 2014
<<< Continued from page 11 HHFH’s primary goal is to send monthly care packages of donated items to deployed troops through the contacts Detweiler and her team have generated since their inception. “We receive a lot of leads from people of who to ship to just by word of mouth. And we take from everywhere; 90 percent, if not more, of the items are purely donated from the community, whether that be individuals, Scout groups, schools, or churches,” explained Detweiler. “Unfortunately, a lot of local organizations and companies that could help us out don’t even know we exist.” It’s a passion project that they all believe in. Detweiler and her band of dedicated board members operate HHFH in between their own home lives and, for most of them, fulltime jobs. Detweiler’s husband, who came up with the name for the group, and her three children are all volunteers. Some of the members also have their own personal ties to the military, which spurs them to work hard at giving back. “Everybody in the group is very committed to assisting the troops, for no pay,” said Detweiler. “It’s 100 percent
was a female soldier whose heritage doesn’t allow her to join the military, but she did it anyway to serve our country and she gets nothing, so we’re helping her with an extra box a month.” They assist the biker group Warriors’ Watch (www. warriorswatch.org) with special send-offs and homecomings. They honor veterans when they’re able. They contribute to Stars For Our Troops (www.starsforourtroops.org). They even reach out to local military families in need. “Many of these women don’t want their husbands to worry when they’re away; we helped someone who had lost her job by giving her groceries. When he came home for the weekend, the kitchen was full,” explained Detweiler. “We’ve paid rent, utilities, given gift cards for food. We post these stories on Facebook and the community is just so generous.” HHFH seeks to help any family in need. While their focus is in Pennsylvania, Detweiler says they’ll never turn someone away if they have the supplies to help them; they’re currently assisting two people in Ohio. Detweiler also notes that if there is a problem they can’t help with, they are more than happy to direct someone to the proper resources.
“We like to see them receive the things they need, because they’re challenged with things that we don’t ever want to see in life. They deserve it. They’re fighting for our freedoms.” volunteer and that’s what I personally like as the owner. We don’t want anything back.” Well, except for some help from the community. HHFH hosts approximately a dozen fundraising events each year in an attempt to boost their capabilities. “We need more volunteers for those events,” said Detweiler. “Especially the big ones; we need more hands. I don’t want my people getting burned out. We kind of push the envelope sometimes, because I have a lot of ideas racing around.” The highest expense of their efforts is shipping the packages themselves, which run around $16 each. “If we keep going like that, we’re going to be fine, but whenever funds are given up for advertising or events, that’s how I look at it: oh, we just lost however many packages,” Detweiler said. “The crew has gotten me to the point where I accept that you have to do certain things to get the money to come back in. We’ve been very blessed.” HHFH consists of only seven board members and as many volunteers as they can gather. They are small, but mighty. They’ve proven themselves capable of having a real impact on the lives of the soldiers they serve. Detweiler said that people tend to not comprehend that what they do is impressive for such a small-scale group. They are often compared to the United Service Organizations (USO, www.uso.org), which sends out thousands of packages per year. “Well, we’re limited to the addresses we receive. If we receive more, we can send more. We also ship monthly, while other companies ship seasonally or as requested,” explained Detweiler. “We like to meet special needs; there
Their primary focus for the future is to build up a base of volunteers. “We’d really like to see the local youth get involved,” said Detweiler. “We’re trying to incorporate a program in the schools that allows them to collect community service hours for helping us. But we want them to give back not because they’re forced to, but because they want to. That makes all the difference in how the work gets done.” That, and a solid foundation of 12 companies willing to commit to one month a year of collecting donations for them; the milestone they are hoping to reach for the coming year. In spite of all their fundraising, Detweiler admits that they’ve had to dip into their own pockets from time to time: “I think we’re all guilty of that, but we do it silently. We like to see them receive the things they need, because they’re challenged with things that we don’t ever want to see in life. They deserve it. They’re fighting for our freedoms. And we have a great time doing it; it keeps you lively. There’s always the stress before an event, but it’s so worth it.” As far as the fruits of their labor, Detweiler says that while hearing success stories is nice, it’s not a necessary part of it for them. “We don’t look for anything back, but when we get it, it’s so awesome,” she explained. “The welcome home we did this year was phenomenal. It’s emotional. There are kids who don’t see their parents for months at a time, so it’s nice to be there for them. If we don’t hear from the soldiers or the families, it really doesn’t matter. We know we’re helping. It’s all for the troops and that’s all that matters.”

The 165-mile long D&L Trail has three physical gaps in the Lehigh Valley between Northampton and Allentown. This project will eliminate the three gaps and connect this approximately seven-mile stretch of trail to the completed trail sections to the immediate north and south. The proposed bridge over the Dry Run portion of the trail will be constructed in a way to accept the load of construction and emergency vehicles and both bridges will be ADA compliant. Funding for the grant comes from impact fees placed on drilling activity in the Marcellus Shale region, which was made possible under Act 13 of 2012.

Bike For The Bridge
Submitted by APRIL ANDREWS The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor is hosting Bike for the Bridge Saturday, Nov. 8. Participants and their bikes will be shuttled from downtown Jim Thorpe to their starting destination by Pocono Biking. Participants will have the option to ride from the Black Diamond Trailhead to Jim Thorpe (36 miles) or from Rockport to Jim Thorpe (15 miles). The price is $29 per person or $45 with a bike rental. The price will include a D&L Membership. All proceeds of this event benefit the completion of the D&L Trail and building the pedestrian bridge at Jim Thorpe to connect to the Lehigh Canal Towpath and Weissport. The pedestrian bridge at Jim Thorpe is a critical connection linking all five counties of the D&L Trail. The completion of the bridge will create 130 miles of continuous trail.

The bridge will help reduce traffic congestion around Jim Thorpe and create a commuting alternative. This span will connect the D&L Trail across the Lehigh River. Its installation will keep pedestrians on public property and safely away from trains and traffic. Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to further explore the D&L Trail and surrounding towns. According to Tom Sexton, Director of the Northeast Regional Office for the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy,“The bridge at Jim Thorpe epitomizes the state of the current shared-use pathway buildout in the nation. Many communities are awaiting the construction of a relatively short span of a
bridge over a waterway or road that will unite isolated trail segments and create a substantially longer trail. In this case, construction of this one gap will not only unite two segments but create a regional system of 165 miles. I don’t know of a project with more at stake and that will be more impactful.” The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that preserve the historic pathway that carried coal and iron from Wilkes-Barre to Philadelphia. Today, the D&L Trail connects people to nature, culture, communities, recreation, and our industrial heritage.

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
Indians Make Their Presence Known
Lehighton School District began a new chapter this school year by leaving the defunct Mountain Valley Conference and joining the Schuylkill League for all sports and the Anthracite League for football. The Indians’ boys’ soccer team took advantage of that fresh start by finishing the 2014 regular season with a 15-3 record overall, a 10-2 mark in the Schuylkill League and earning a league title. Fifth-year head coach Dave Yob admits he had an inkling that this season might be just a little different. “A few weeks before the start of the season, I took my two assistants, Joe Zarelli and Dylan Smith, out to dinner and we discussed the upcoming season,”Yob said. “We were in agreement that this could be a special year for us. We knew that some things needed to come together for the success to happen but we have been extremely pleased with the results.” The regular season success carried right over into the postseason for Lehighton, in what is just the second winning season in Lehighton boys’ soccer’s 19-year history. The Indians captured the league title, the first title of any kind for the program, by defeating Nativity in the semi-final and Blue Mountain in the championship game. Yob admitted that capturing the league championship was a part of the team’s pre-season goals, a team that, according to Yob, needed every member to fulfill those goals. “We have received solid contributions from the entire team throughout the season,” he said. “It has really been a total team effort to get us to this

point. To single out any one person would be an injustice to the others who have worked just as hard. While some have excelled on the offensive end, our defense has done a solid job as well.” Some individuals who stand out statistically are juniors Joe Marks, Zach Christoff, Dan Baka, and sophomore Frank Bokan, all of whom have netted at least 10 goals this season. Additionally, sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Dietz was near the top of the league in shutouts during the course of the regular season. The success of those offensive and defensive players transitioned Lehighton into the District 11 3A tournament as the top seed as well. The team defeated Notre Dame Green Pond of the Colonial League, 3-1, but was upset by fifth-seeded Northwestern, 5-0, last Tuesday at Northern Lehigh’s Bulldog Community Stadium. Despite all of the talent that every player on this roster possesses, Yob believes how they play together on the pitch it the biggest ingredient to the team’s success. “I would say that our team chemistry is very good,” he said. “The members of the team are friends off the field and get along well. Yes, they have their moments where they get upset with each other, but that exists in any family.” This family may be finished for the season, but when they come together for a reunion next fall, it could even be more explosive. Baver ihrer Schtick. Es zwett Deel watt im neegscht Ausgang vun der „Town and Country“ sei.] November 8, 1962 The last time the Pennsylvania German Folklore Society met we became acquainted with Ben Sauder from Canada. Ben is a PA Dutchman from the area of Waterloo County in Ontario, Canada. On his way home he wrote a poem and sent it to us. This poem was not published in any book, and we believe we are the only ones that have it. This is it: I went to Pennsylvania (A non-metrical translation) Perhaps a few people can not understand, What made me go to Pennsylvania, Well, the Folklore Society [of Ontario] had its start there, And recently we have her here for the last nine years, I thought about it, it would not anger you, If I would go over there to learn a little, But I did not think, that it could happen thus, That those people there also are rapidly loosing their Dutch, I wandered about the market place in Lancaster, To see with whom I could talk Dutch. Then one man finally understood me, Yet Pennsylvania Dutch went hard [for him], There are those people, who still ride in enclosed buggies [the Amish], With them the dialect is definitely not lost, But the Folklore Meeting, I should tease them, That they needed to say everything in English, There just are not nicer people [The Bavers], than I visited near the Delaware River, There I made myself completely at home, And we jabbered in Dutch well into the night. … [This is just the first part of Florence Baver’s article. The second part will be continued in the next issue of “Town and Country”.] –Larry Gradwohl

Submitted by NIKOL TEWS Did you ever wonder what happens at Christmas to less fortunate children in our community? If you would like to contribute toward gifts for kids in our community who would normally go without seeing presents on Christmas morning, please contact Quota of Northampton. We are once again accepting contributions of either new, unwrapped gifts of your own choosing or a financial donation for our club’s “elves” to shop with. We will also operate a Christmas store for young clients of the Northampton Food Bank Dec. 13. Each child will be able to pick out a gift for every member of their family at no charge. In addition to gifts for children, we are looking for small gifts for adults and siblings. Last year, we were able to help over 40 children in the Northampton school district have a wonderful holiday through the generous donations of individuals and local businesses. We will arrange for the purchase, wrapping, and delivery of gifts for kids in our community.

Police Pup
The internet exploded last week after the nonprofit Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog posted this picture of a nine-week-old German Shepherd trying on a K-9 vest. The picture was dubbed “too cute to handle” by BuzzFeed and “criminally cute” by the Huffington Post. The puppy’s name is Tuco, “named after Tuco Salamanca, a Mexican drug kingpin in the AMC series "Breaking Bad," according to their Facebook page. MA Vest-a-Dog has provided Boston Police Department K-9 unit with 26 vests since 2000. The calendars are available for a $10 donation at www.mavestadog.org. Today, Tuco is six months old and just about fits “into his vest, they said.”
Rescue Pet -- Meet MATILDA Meet Matilda. She was found as a stray and is approximately six months old, suspected to be an English spot mix. She is a very sweet little girl, cautious of strangers, but warms up quickly. She loves to sit with her human buddies and get pet and cuddled. She also has a feisty side; she loves to run, spin, and jump. Matilda is great at using her litterbox and never goes outside her cage. She will be spayed when she is old enough and then she will be ready to go home. For more information or to set up a time to meet Matilda, contact diane924m@aol.com.

reheat oven to 350°F. Line two muffin pans with paper liners. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. In a standing bowl mixer with paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar for 3 to 5 minutes until light and fluffy. Add egg whites one at a time, scraping the sides of the bowl after each addition. Beat in the vanilla. n a liquid measuring cup, combine champagne and peach schnapps. With the mixer on low, alternate adding the flour mixture and the liquor mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until combined. Fold in the diced peaches. coop batter into liners, bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Transfer to wire rack for cooling. Make sure cupcakes are cooled before frosting. Buttercream ombine the butter and vanilla in a standing bowl mixer and beat until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the powdered sugar to the mixer one cup at a time. Keep mixer on low. Combine champagne and peach schnapps in a small bowl; add to the mixer after powdered sugar has been incorporated. Add milk and red food coloring and beat until light and fluffy. utter, butter, and more butter! This recipe is packed full with butter, a flavor I love but hate working with in the kitchen when it comes to mixing. Another one of my least favorite things is working with powdered sugar, another ingredient this recipe has a surplus of; oh yes, and separating egg whites from their yolks. Despite all of these setbacks, the promise of champagne and peach schnapps inspired me to give these cupcakes a try. By the way, I cheated and did the unspeakable: used canned peaches instead of the real thing.

Good luck and enjoy!

Slatington Rotary—American Pilgrims At Canal Festival
Submitted by SAL SOMMA The Rotary Club of Slatington set up cutouts of American pilgrims at the 2014 Walnutport Canal Festival. Visitors were able to have their photo taken looking like a pilgrim. The Northern Lehigh High School Art department, who created the pilgrim cutouts, voluntarily donated them to the Rotary Club which we have used for the past three years. The Rotary Club provides these pilgrim cutouts as a service to the community. Pictured in the pilgrim cutouts are Jen Burnard and her son Bradley while enjoying the Festival.

What you will need: •20 clean, dry wine corks •20 bells or small Christmas ornaments •Ribbon •Drill •Hot glue gun
Steps
Step 1: Carefully drill holes through each of the corks near both ends. Step 2: Arrange your corks and bells in an alternating pattern. Step 3: Using the craft wire, strand the corks and bells together. Keep the wire long enough to reach through each one. Then secure the corks together on the other end with a second piece of wire. The wire can be secured to itself by twisting it together. Step 4: You may use hot glue to reinforce the bells and the corks. This may also help your bells from moving around. Step 5: Attach the ribbon to the wreath through one of the bells to make hanging a cinch. You can easily adjust the size of your wreath by adding more or less corks! Using multi-colored bells and a variety of wine corks, your wreath is sure to be a one-ofa-kind crowd pleaser. You can also add an extra splash of holiday cheer by sprinkling some festive glitter on the corks.

1. When Harry Met Sally
A Walk in the Park
I’ve probably said it about a million times by now, but I love New York City. My time spent working as an intern in 2011 for a travel magazine in midtown was a huge career highlight, the coolest part of which was the number of times I walked past a movie set. My office was right around the corner from Grand Central Station and the Chrysler Building and after a while it became a common occurrence for me to have to re-route down a different block because of a massive assembly of scaffolding and lighting and boom mics. These days, my usual visit itinerary keeps me in midtown, but I adore downtown Manhattan. I love the tree-lined residential streets. The gorgeous parks. The more down-to-earth atmosphere. One of my favorite iconic spots is Washington Square Park, where so many notable movie and TV scenes have been filmed. Here are a few examples:

Sally Albright and Harry Burns share a car ride from Chicago to New York upon graduating from college. After determining they can never be friends because Sally can’t order pie in one sentence and Harry’s a jerk or something, she drops him off at the park and they go their separate ways. One of Nora Ephron’s best and one of my personal favorites. 2. I Am Legend
Robert Neville is the last remaining survivor after a viral plague wipes out most of the population and turns the rest into zombies with a temper not to be messed with. At least his fortress of solitude has one hell of a view. Too bad he’s forced to blow it up in the climax of the film. 3. Glee
Before half of Glee actually picked up and moved to New York, it was the season two finale that brought our favorite student singers to the Big Apple. They sang their way across Manhattan, which included a pit stop on a bench under the arch. Then in the season four premiere, Rachel and Kurt reunited near the fountain.

4. August Rush
5. Gilmore Girls
Page 49
I was going to include the episode of Gilmore Girls where Rory visits Jess and finds him in the park, where he says he likes to read. Then I watched the scene more closely, went on IMDb, and realized it was filmed in Burbank. Still, a name drop.
Evan (“August”) meets a musician in the park who, unbeknownst to both of them, is actually his biological father. They test out each others’ guitars, engaging in a little musical duel. What’s your favorite spot in your favorite city? Drop me a line on Facebook.

Annual St. John Neumann Regional School Walk-A-Thon
Submitted by SUE ARNOLD On Friday, Oct. 24, the weather was warm, sunny, and full of children walking in and around Palmerton Memorial Park on their annual WalkA-Thon. Parents, teachers, and volunteers were out as well, to participate in this exciting day. In addition to the outdoor trek, the St. John Neumann Regional School students began the day with Mass at Sacred Heart Church, and then proceeded to the gym for a stretch session courtesy of Dedicated Fitness. After the walk, the Franklin Institute gave a fun and educational demonstration on flight. A huge thank to all of our sponsors for making the SJNRS annual WalkA-Thon a success.

VETERANS DAY 2014 IN MEMORY AND HONOR… During the past year, we have had the privilege of serving the families of Veterans. We are honored to be of service to them in their time of need, just as their loved one was there in our time of need. On Veteran’s Day, we pay tribute to those who served our country in the name of Freedom, the same Freedom that allows us to serve them. Our prayers are with all the Veterans, their families, and with the brave men and women serving our country today. We also wish to thank those from our area’s veteran service groups who volunteer their time in honor guards and firing squads bestowing the greatest honor for their deceased comrades.
