From the Editor’s Desk

Joe Korba

One of my favorite things about writing for a living is the opportunity to meet amazing people. In my career, I’ve been in press conferences with Willie Nelson and Dave Matthews, sat down for interviews with amazing talents like PBS’ jazz connoisseur and historian Sascha Feinstein and had the incredible luck to work with prominent writers like syndicated environmental columnist Dr. Walter Brasch and, probably the most influential person I’ve ever known, Dr. Thomas Walker-labor activist, historian, and all around, savant. But, none of them measure up to men like Luther Walck. Walck, who I met when he rented a vendor spot at our annual fundraiser for the NL Food Bank, seems like most any friendly, older, gentlemen from our area. He and his wife participate in our fundraiser every year and are some of the nicest people I’ve met while working at the Gazette. Walck is also a WWII Navy Veteran, who served on the U.S.S. Tucson (CL-98) in the Pacific theatre. The anti-aircraft ship broke off from the main fleet on July 10, 1945, several Lehigh Valley area

FEATURING: Stories about your newsworthy neighbors! November: Meet Anthony George

Last month, we debuted our new monthly feature with a story about volunteer firefighter, Darin Weidner. For the remainder of the year, you’ll read about a newsworthy neighbor in the first issue of each month—we’re turning the spotlight on community members who have unique and interesting stories. For November, we introduce you to a 7th grader and People to People Ambassador from Walnutport, Pa. who spent 15 days in the Outback over the summer. Meet Anthony George.

NEXT MONTH

Read about Jake Marunich, a senior at Northern Lehigh HS, who became a Junior Dragster NHRA track champ at 15 years old.

Meet the Staff

National All-You-Can-Eat Day (otherwise known as Thanksgiving) is fast approaching. What are some ways you stay fit and healthy during the holiday season? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: I run a lot, between 3-4 miles daily. The MyFitnessPal app has also shamed me into keeping pretty tight rein on my calorie intake as well.

Danielle Tepper, Publishing Assistant: I recently started doing Weight Watchers again and I’m also working out locally at a girls-only place in Nazareth where I take fitness classes with ridiculously girl power-infused names like “Supergirl” and “Dumbbell Diva.” Cheesy? Yes, but also effective. I have an ambitious weight loss goal to achieve in time for a summer 2014 vacation to St. Lucia.

A Family Tradition of Courteous, Dignified Service

Alice Wanamaker, Publishing Assistant: Traditionally, I haven't worried much about staying fit, so this year is going to be a bit challenging for me. My new fit lifestyle includes going to the gym and eating a healthy well-balanced diet every day. So come Thanksgiving Day, I am hoping that my commitment to be healthy will be as strong as ever. I also registered for a 5K Turkey Trot at 8 a.m. Thanksgiving morning. This is sure to help me fight off any extra Turkey Day calories! And no matter how many calories I indulge in on Thanksgiving, I am sure to burn them all off out shopping on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday.

Meet the Staff

Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager: Thanksgiving is a real family holiday. Being the oldest of five children creates a rather large extended family. Having a crowd of 26+ family members gathered for a holiday meal generates my personal healthy mind. I love the chatter of the little ones and the bickering of adult conversation. That being said, at the end of the day, I personally love the feeling of excitement that was enjoyed by everyone — and the cleaning up after the fact is always a stay fit routine!

Tony Pisco, Art Director: I try to exercise as much as possible, but usually the best I can do is every other day on my exercise bike. My father tells me my metabolism will start to slow down in a couple of years though. Tyler Trumbauer, Staff Writer: Luckily for me, my age mixed with my fast metabolism creates a situation where I don’t worry about what I eat during the holiday season; I just enjoy the great food.

said Jeanine. “He’s made some very close friends; they’ve been Face-Timing. That’s how they do it now. That’s the new pen pals.” “His father and I just think to have that experience at 11—we were bawling when he got home,” she continued. “We were so happy to see him, but also just talking to him and realizing what he’s been through […] I so wish I could’ve been there with him. But that wasn’t part of the deal. You send them and say a prayer, so that’s what we did.” The program worked its magic on Anthony who said, “Kids there are really the same as us, just from a different place with a different accent.” People to People sends ambassadors through high school and they are able to obtain college credit for their time spent in other countries—definitely a bonus on college applications and future resumes. Anthony’s Australian Fun Facts • Opals are the national precious gemstone. Anthony brought one back for his mother as a souvenir. • Naturally, the kids visited a koala from. “I didn’t hold the koala, the koala held me,” said Anthony. “It’s like you’re holding a 10 lb. sack of Vick’s VapoRub. All they eat is eucalyptus.” • Anthony ate some unique and exotic meals in the Outback, but his least favorite food was vegemite. Vegemite is a dark brown food paste made from leftover brewers’ yeast extract, a by-product of beer manufacture, and various vegetable and spice additives. “It’s horrible,” said Anthony. “Just gross. It’s what everyone eats there; they put it on their toast. I couldn’t handle it.”

Page 9

• During a tour of the Sydney Opera House, Anthony learned that 22 billion tiles make up the roof. • Anthony is a member of the Australian Polar Bear Club—because he and nine other kids were the only ones daring enough to swim in their hotel pool in 60 degree weather! “People were staring out their windows at us,” he said. • Even without the language barrier, the kids marveled at each other’s accents. “There was a group of girls at the school who asked me to say ‘tomato,’” Anthony explained. “Then they were like, ‘Oh my God, he’s so adorable!’ I could understand everyone though.” • -Anthony and the students tried their hand at making a traditional Australian dessert called lamingtons. “You cut lemon pound cake into pieces, dip them in chocolate, then coconut, then you fill them with jelly. Oh, they’re delicious.” • While exploring the Capricorn Caves, Anthony took the more adventurous exit option: “I did the Whale’s Belly. You had to jump up into a tube and army-crawl, then do like a pull-up through a hole and then climb 20 feet up on the rocks. It was really dark, but there was a bright orange rope so you could see where you were, it was so cool.” • Kangaroos are cute—and apparently, also tasty. Jeanine laughed as she explained, “He showed me a picture of one of his meals and I go, ‘My God, that looks like a beautiful cut of steak,’ and he goes, ‘Mom, that’s kangaroo.’ So I said, how’d it taste and he says, it’s delicious. And he just pet them the day before!” • Travel time to Australia can get pretty monotonous. The longest leg was 20 hours on a plane. “The flight going there wasn’t that bad but the flight coming back, for some reason the pilot felt the need to do a half-barrel roll every five minutes,” said Anthony. “I’m guessing it was just turbulence, but it was hard to sleep on that one.”

Phantoms/Penguins Re-Kindle Rivalry in 2013-2014 By Tony Androckitis, TCG AHL Hockey Beat Writer One night after the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins began their season series, their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliates in Glens Falls and Wilkes-Barre, respectively, took to the ice for their first matchup of the year. It didn’t take long for those in attendance at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Oct. 19 to see that this hockey rivalry stems past the hatred built up at the National Hockey League (NHL) level. “You see the Flyers lose the other day and you want to go win for them,” Phantoms forward Zack Fitzgerald said. “When you have a rivalry like this it’s going to be physical. It’s good. That’s the way I like to play hockey. We just need to be a little more physical.” Last Friday’s AHL game was certainly physical throughout the entire 60 minutes of play. In all, the referees whistled 26 infractions and dished out 80 penalty minutes to the Phantoms and Penguins, including a pair of fights and several post-whistle scrums. To no one’s surprise, Fitzgerald was the one with his gloves off late in the second period with Penguins forward Pierre-Luc Letourneau Leblond. “It gets me excited,” Fitzgerald said of playing

A linguistics professor was lecturing his class one day. “In English,” he said, “A double negative forms a positive. In some languages though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. However, there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative.” A loud voice from the back of the room piped up, “Yeah, right.”

Basic Pistol Class at Palmerton Rod & Gun Club

Submitted by Rusana Kasriel Basic Pistol Class at Palmerton Rod & Gun Club held on Sept. 28 was completely sold out! The attendees learned the structure of the weapon, safe use, cleaning and storage. The best part was the range time; some of the attendees, mostly women and a teenager, had never shot a weapon before and some were even afraid of the gun. When they left, not only could they shoot their own weapons, but they asked to play with the big toys. Some started with a tiny .32ACP and .22LR and ended with shooting a Glock, Sig, and even the Taurus Judge. Alex Platz, instructor and owner of Razorback Tactical Solutions, made the class fun. He patiently and thoroughly went over the instructional material without losing the attention of the students by injecting humor and encouraging participation. The class was laughing and learning. Thanks to the help from Angelo, Igor, and Kevin, all attendees got personal instruction and guidance at the range. They were shown a proper way to handle a weapon and different shooting stances and were given an opportunity to decide which position worked best for them.

Some even got to try couple of different models to see what felt more comfortable to them. By the end of the day, not only could everyone properly and safely handle a weapon, but many went from shooting erratically to shooting up a perfect grouping. New friendships were formed today and we are looking forward to providing our club members and members of our community with more classes. Because no one should ever be a victim!

Lehigh Township Historical Society Submitted by Beverly Putt Thank you to LT Fire Chief Rick Hildebrand and all of the firefighters who accompanied him for the presentation at St. Paul's UCC of Indianland on Oct. 13. The presentation started with a slideshow followed by an introduction of the firefighters and then they donned the attire they use for the different jobs they perform with the fire company. There were two fire trucks on the parking lot to tour and literature for everyone to take along. It was a learning experience for everybody in attendance. Thanks to all of the volunteers at the LT Volunteer Fire Company for the informative presentation that day and the important role they have in Lehigh Township. We are all grateful that they work to keep our community safe. St. Paul's Schoolhouse was also open that day and visitors toured the schoolhouse which was restored by the historical society. Remember, even though there will not be regular open house dates for the schoolhouse and the historical centre during the winter, we look forward to your visit. You can make an appointment all year long to tour both buildings by calling 610-767-5989. Family and organization groups are welcome. For more information or questions regarding LTHS, please call Ken at 610767-5989.

The Amish, Florence Baver November 13, 1955 In 1693, one Jakob Ammann, led a group of people to withdraw from the Mennonite Church in Switzerland. In about 1709, the first Amish people came to Pennsylvania. Later some of the Amish had a falling out with one another and now [the two groups] are called the House Amish and the Church Amish. The House Amish hold fast the hardest to their [traditional] Christian beliefs. They hold their church service in one of the homes of their members. The men sit on one side of the benches and the women on the other. They sing, pray and preach in High German. No organ is used. At no time does the preacher receive any money [He has a ‘day’ job]. When the service is finished, a long dinner table is prepared and all eat, before returning home. When one of the Amish people falls out of line with their teachings, then he is soon thrown out of the Church [shunned- until he mends his ways]. October 13, 1955 A little more about the Amish people: When the children are still in the mother’s arm, they already wear a little baby bonnet, just like their mother’s sun bonnet. Under the bonnet, the mother wears a little white cap, which we call in English, a “prayer cap”. The dresses are long, as are the sleeves. A shawl and an apron, black cotton stockings and high lace shoes with flat heels help complete their outfit. Hooks are used in place of buttons. The clothing is all made at home. The women’s dresses are all made from plain material, none from flower patterns. Many are black and some are colored. Their hair is at no time curled. It is combed down flat and braided and pinned up under the little white cap and sun bonnet.

Happy Birthday Sean Haney - 24 on Oct. 22 Jim George - 51 on Oct. 23

VETERANS DAY 2013 IN MEMORY AND HONOR… During the past year, we have had the privilege of serving the families of Veterans. We are honored to be of service to them in their time of need, just as their loved one was there in our time of need. On Veteran’s Day, we pay tribute to those who served our country in the name of Freedom, the same Freedom that allows us to serve them. Our prayers are with all the Veterans, their families, and with the brave men and women serving our country today. We also wish to thank those from our area’s veteran service groups who volunteer their time in honor guards and firing squads bestowing the greatest honor for their deceased comrades. John J. Phantoms/Penguins Re-Kindle Rivalry in 2013-2014 Continued from Page 11 Center in Allentown for the 2014-15 season, these Phantoms,” Kostopoulos added. “Both NHL teams two teams could end up playing each other 8-12 like that style, like teams that play hard-nosed times next season, much like how the Penguins hockey so it translates into the minors. We have a bunch of players that play that way and so do they play in-state rival Hershey 12 times this season. “That just makes it a whole new game, when so it leads to good hockey.” The Penguins skated away last Friday night you start to play each other that much, there really starts to become a hatred on the ice,” Fitzgerald with the 6-3 win and after two more wins last said. “That hypes it up, gets fans from the other weekend, they head into this weekend’s games side coming and all of a sudden it’s a full house. with Binghamton and Norfolk undefeated after six games. The Phantoms started the season with Hopefully I’ll be around and it’ll be exciting.” Penguins team captain Tom Kostopoulos, a an overtime win over the Hershey Bears, but have former teammate of Fitzgerald’s with the Carolina since dropped five straight games, including two Hurricanes organization, played against the in shootouts, to fall to 1-3-0-2 through six games. “They’re a gritty team,” Penguins forward Zach Phantoms twice last season but recalls playing against the Phantoms when they were intrastate Sill said of the Phantoms. “They always come to play hard and it’s always a fun game to play rivals with the AHL Penguins in the early 2000’s. “When they were in Philadelphia for awhile against them, that’s for sure.” The two teams don’t face-off again until it was a huge battle because they were so close,” Kostopoulos said. “There was some scary games November 27th in Glens Falls, New York, but my first couple years, we had a really tough team that doesn’t mean there won’t be any carryover and so did the Phantoms. You went into those hostilities from last Friday’s game on Thanksgiving games prepared because there was guys that Eve in upstate New York. “I’m sure it will,” Sill said, when asked about could take you head off,” Kostopoulos said with if the physical style and rivalry-mentality will a laugh. “It’s always been a physical rivalry playing the continue next time the two teams meet. “It will be a little bit of a grudge match next time.”

A New Face at Friedens’ Organ

Cedar Crest, Dr. Birney, knew someone who knew Michelle Cerrone, who served on the search committee for finding an organist/pianist. As an accomplished pianist, she has played piano since the age of 5, and more recently added the organ to her talents. She likes that Friedens UCC is a small church and that our members are so accepting of everyone. Young feels that her role as organist/ pianist is very important to our church family because music is such a major part of worship and singing is another form of prayer and praise. Friedens UCC feels fortunate to have Young as our new organist/pianist. Help us to welcome Youngeun by joining us for worship at any of our 10:30 a.m. Sunday services at the “Little Church with a Big Heart.”

Submitted by Janice Altrichter Friedens United Church of Christ in Slatington proudly welcomes our new organist/pianist, Youngeun Choi, whose nickname is “Young” for short. Young grew up in Daegu, South Korea, where her family still resides. Daegu is the fourth largest city in South Korea and is about a 4.5 hour drive from Seoul. Her mother, Kyung-hee, works in a pharmacy there, while her dad, Yoon-chul, does apartment security. She has a younger brother, Woo-Seok, currently in the military. In her home country, it is mandatory for men to serve 20 months in the military. In addition to missing her family, she misses public transportation which was more prevalent and convenient. Young graduated from St. Pius, Pottstown in 2008. At Cedar Crest College, she majored in Nuclear Medicine with a minor in Music. She did internships in her field of study at Lehigh Valley Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital. Young also has done project work at The Reading Hospital. She is continuing her studies at Cedar Crest and currently works part-time, but is hoping to find a full-time position in Nuclear Medicine. It was through networking that Young wound up at Friedens UCC. One of her professors at

NL Little Theatre Presents Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple” (Female Edition) Submitted by Andrew Kern Unger and Madison are at it again! Florence Unger and Olive Madison, that is, in Neil Simon's hilarious contemporary comic classic: the female version of ‘The Odd Couple.’ Instead of the poker party that begins the original male version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. When uptight Florence needs a place to stay, easygoing Olive takes her in … but can this mismatched pair of friends survive being roommates? Find out in the hilarious stage performance presented by the Northern Lehigh Little Theatre! Directed by Mr. Nicholas Sander, Neil Simon’s ‘The Odd Couple’ stars Lydia DeLong as Olive Madison and Alexis Middaugh in the part of Florence Unger. In supporting roles, Brie Williams, Taylor Duplaga, Sandra Moran, and Victoria Oquendo provide additional comedic relief as the ladies’ close-knit circle of friends. Replacing the Pidgeon sisters from the original male version are the Spanish-speaking Costazuela brothers, aptly portrayed by Jacob Heintzelman and Gavin Fricker. Performances will be held in the Northern

Lehigh High School auditorium beginning on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m., continuing Saturday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. and concluding with a 2 p.m. matinee performance on Sunday, Nov. 17th. Open admission seating will be available at the door. Tickets are $7.

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer

Wood Wins ‘Race to the Record’

Most sophomore seasons are spent working tirelessly in the junior varsity ranks striving to perfect one’s game in preparation for that shot at varsity. For Palmerton’s Monica Wood, it was spent breaking a school record. The Blue Bomber broke the school record for goals in a single season by a girls’ soccer player as Wood finished with 23 shots that found the net and surpassed the previous mark of 20 which was set by Casey Reinfert back in 2011. “It feels good as I’m only a sophomore,” Wood said of being a school record holder. “I hope I can continue to add points to the record. It just feels really good that it all worked out as last year I didn’t get to play much as I had an injury that put me out for most of the season. To be able to come out this year and break the record was just awesome.” Wood is a two-sport athlete at Palmerton as she is a part of the track team in the spring as well. She also plays soccer for Keystone Athletic, which

is a premier program that runs during the offseason of the scholastic girls’ soccer season. She wasn’t the only girl vying for the record as her classmate and best friend, Brinn Doherty, was also working towards the achievement, but came up short as Doherty finished the year with 16 goals. Wood spoke about battling with her best friend. “It was a little bit of a hard concept to grasp. When we found out that both of us were really close to the record, we got nervous. We had to do what we had to do. We did what we needed to do to win and may the best girl win.” Wood started this season in the midfield, but was later moved to the forward position by second year head coach, Mark Weiss. Weiss played an important role in the promoting of Wood’s and Doherty’s chase as he placed a poster on his classroom door at Palmerton High School that read, “Race to the Record,” that had each girls’ current goal totals and how far away they were from the record. In a phone interview, Weiss talked about both girls’ talents on the pitch. “I had hopes that these girls would [break the record]. They both are really good technical players. They both are really fast, think on their feet and have great ball skills. I was hoping they would get to the record.”

This great individual feat comes during a season where the girls’ soccer program finished with a 3-10 record in the Colonial League and a 6-12 mark overall. The numbers aren’t there at Palmerton as there hasn’t been a true junior varsity team in the last few seasons due to losing multiple players when girls’ soccer made the switch from the Spring to Fall sports season in 2012. Weiss talked about having a new school record come out of this season. “We were in a lot of games and we lost by just a few goals. That probably says something about the record. We beat a few teams that are now in districts and that hurts a little, but we played well

and it is great to see Monica get this.” Gaining an accolade with still half of her high school career ahead, Wood has high hopes for her next two seasons. “My aspiration is to go to districts as a team and I think we have full potential to do it. We have gotten so much better as a team over the years and I think we have the possibility to do it. I’d like to increase the record and add more points to it.” Wood and Doherty were a part of the “Race to the Record” that ended with Wood taking the cake. Both would like to be a part of Palmerton’s ‘Dash to Districts’ as a team next season.

Do You Remember The General Store In Cherryville? Submitted by Beverly Putt Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Robert Hess of Whitehall. He is the grandson of Preston O. Hess. He had many memories of the general store in Cherryville which was like a mini five-and-ten cent store. The general store and post office, which was located in the center of Cherryville, was run by his grandfather. He was not sure when his grandfather got the store - he thinks possibly around 1905 or 1906 with what today would be called a lease agreement; he didn't buy the store. In the beginning, he managed it and would give part of the proceeds to the Kress family. He remembered going to the store when he was a youngster. He would visit his grandparents for a little vacation and helped at the store. He was given things to do such as go to the basement for a jar of molasses or go to the second floor and get a certain size shoe or shirt. He said they always had two barrels of molasses and vinegar in the basement. For each, there were two: one for cooking and one for the table. They had loose candy for one cent apiece in a glass display case in the rear of the store. For five cents, children could buy five different kinds of candy. There was very little packaged food so items such as beans, cookies, crackers, etc., would be weighed out and sold in a bag by the pound. You could find clothing, shoes, hardware, material, all kinds of thread, and much more at the local store ... a little bit of everything. Leonard Anthony, who lived in Cherryville at one time and now is a resident of Bethlehem, remembered going to the store. He said, "They

had shelves with any kind of gun you wanted." He said his grandfather bought a shotgun for him at the Hess store when he was twelve years old so he could go hunting with him. At Christmastime, Mr. Hess always gave something to the customers. One item in Bob's possession is a metal flour sifter about one cup in size. On the sifter are the words, "When you sift it down, you will find it pays to patronize: P.O. Hess, Cherryville, Pa." There are a few of these in existence in the area. Preston and his wife, Annie, lived right alongside and to the left of the post office and there was a bedroom on the second floor corner. The store and their home were kind of intermingled. On the third floor, there was a GAR Chapter meeting place. I also learned from Leonard Anthony that there was a band in Cherryville and Preston Hess allowed them to meet on the top floor of the general store. He also recalled the organization that met upstairs and they entered by going up the iron steps on the east side of the building. There was no parking lot and the road from Treichlers was a narrow street so people would park along the porch in front of the building or alongside the road. The Cherryville Post Office opened on Feb. 6, 1816 at the corner of Rt. 248 and Blue Mountain Dr. Preston O. Hess was the postmaster from 1909 until 1949. In the post office, there were little cubby holes which didn't have doors on them. People asked for their mail and it was pulled from the inside and handed out to the customers. Over the years, there were changes with how people received their mail but the post office was in

operation until 1992 when it relocated to a nearby location on Blue Mountain Dr. Other types of business were conducted at the store. At the general store, one could pay for a bus trip with the Edwards Lake to Sea Bus Company. You could also order farm equipment. Many local farmers ordered farm implements and Mr. Hess ordered them through a company so they didn't have to go through a dealer to get what they wanted. The understanding was that they had to go to Treichler’s to pick items up at the railroad station. Equipment always shipped by train. They had delivery service. He remembered going along with an employee, George Jacoby, to help deliver groceries to various farms. George was employed at the store and went away to serve in the Coast Guard in World War II. While he was away, Russell Hummel started working there. When the war was over, George returned and both of the men worked for his grandfather. One or two days of the week, George would take the truck to deliver items. People would call in and order things. They would pack items in a box and then deliver them in a little green Chevy panel truck with P. O. Hess - General Merchandise Cherryville, Pa. written on it. He always looked forward to visiting his grandparents and working at the store. Here, he

Page 59

could speak Dutch - both of his grandparents spoke Dutch. People had credit back then. He "kept book." Right in back of the counter, there was a metal container with a spring action that held the bills and people came in and paid their bills once a month or every two or three months. Bob recalled that even after Preston Hess retired, people would visit his home for years afterward to pay off their grocery store bill. The post office and general store managed by Preston O. Hess was quite a place in its time. There are still folks around with fond memories of going there to shop and pick up their mail. After the Cherryville post office relocated in 1992, the building became vacant; it has deteriorated a great deal. In time, it is sure to be demolished. A building, built in the 1800s, that has served its purpose will one day no longer be there but hopefully, will remain in the memories of many of its residents.
