I love fall. It’s easily my favorite time of year. Besides the natural beauty of the foliage in our area it also marks the return of football season, the excitement of post-season baseball and the best holiday of them all: Halloween. Hopefully when this article goes to print the Eagles are making some progress and beginning to live up to their preseason hype (The Redskins win was a start). Those first four games of the regular season were almost as painful to watch as
they were for Mike Vick to play in. But, I digress. This issue is our annual Home Improvement issue with helpful tips as well as plenty of local professionals in our home improvement section to help you remodel, repair or do whatever you’d like to do to make your house a home. We also have some great local football updates from sports writer Tyler Trumbauer and lots of other local stories. I sincerely hope you enjoy this issue! Feel free to contact me with any feedback.

A Hero’s Welcome The Warrior’s Watch Riders is an organization of dedicated people who are committed to ensuring that never again will another member of the armed services be scorned or ignored. Everyday throughout the nation a motorcycle organization is welcoming home a member of the military. These riders volunteer their time, brave the elements year round and ask nothing in return but to encourage others to ensure our service men and women that their sacrifices are not in vain. Words can’t express the emotions brought forth by welcoming one of our warriors home. It’s an event you must experience if only one time, you surely won’t forget it. People from all walks of life come together for a common cause; to thank a Marine, a Soldier, an Airman or a Guardsman. It doesn’t get more patriotic than this! There will be a “Flag Line” at the American Legion in Coplay, Saturday, October 23 from 1:00 3:00 p.m. (No escort on this run) The Warriors Watch Riders has been asked by Lou Fettig for a “Flag Line” for his Son-in-Law, Spc. 3 Biggest Lighting Mistakes (NAPSI)—Homeowners don’t have to be in the dark when it comes to avoiding common lighting mistakes. Here are several examples and tips on how to avoid them: • Not installing landscape lighting. With the proper lighting, your home can look even more dramatic at night than during the daytime, have greater security and increase its value. • Choosing the wrong-sized lighting fixtures. Take the width of the room, add it to the length of the room, turn that measurement from feet to inches—that is a good approximation of how wide the fixture should be. Also, make sure the bottom of your dining room fixture is 30” off the table. • Not using a dimmer. Lighting controls have several advantages over on/off switches—starting with savings. A $20 dimmer pays for itself within the first year. Videos detailing these and other common mistakes—and how to avoid them—are available on the Capitol Lighting website atwww.1800lighting.com/mistakes.

What A Weekend! 24th Annual Dream Come True Fundraiser a Success The 24th annual Dream Come True event was held at Becky’s Drive In on Saturday, October 8. The event, which is normally the first Sunday of October was delayed a week due to rain and heavy flooding the week before. The skies cleared up and the sun shined down on hundreds of cars and guests who attended, 401 cars were part of the car show in total. The event, which included the popular car show, Chinese auction, live music, a flea market and craft show and a lot of really tasty food helped raise money for the Dream Come True Charity. Organizer Cindy Deppe said that with money still coming in from this years event, more than $12,000 was raised for Dream Come True. Over $1900 of that came from food sales at the Lehigh Township Lions Club food trailer. The event was a success, despite being delayed a week.
Car Show Winners included Joey Zellner Memorial Trophy #253 - Barry & Kathy Klinger, Drums, PA 2007 Ford Mustang GT Participants Choice Trophy #158 - Keith Sadowski, Port Murray, 2002 Ford Convertible Spectators Choice Trophy #129 - Tony Gornick, Walnutport, PA 1933 Willy’s Coupe Club Choice Trophy # 236 - Rob Hillpot, Bethlehem, PA 1941 Ford Rat Rod

A Touch of Dutch This is the first “Touch of Dutch” article ever published in the Town & Country Gazette. When it was originally published, there was no accompanying translation. The recent translation was done by Larry Gradwohl of Bath.
in this little paper. Years ago we had a newspaper in which some man wrote a Dutch column every month or so. Then I thought perhaps if I would write something, there would be someone around here that could do better.

There is a radio announcer from Boyertown that has a Dutch hour Thursday evenings. [That was Dave Hendricks’ ‘Wunnerfitz Schtunn’ on WBYO FM.] One time they talked about Apees cookies. They said that they had the letters ‘A P’ on them. Then a friend told me there was a recipe in ‘The Pennsylvania Dutch Cook Book’ for them and it mentioned that also. That was the first I heard anything about it. We just rolled out the vanilla cookies dough, cut it in pieces, sprinkled on sugar or nuts and then baked them. They were then ‘a piece’, not ‘A Ps’ like the book said. The book also stated that perhaps the name came from one Ann Page who put her initials on the cookies she sold in the Philadelphia area. [Records exist as early as 1830 for an Ann Page, still living at that time, who had sold such cookies with her initials on them.] One caller to that show said that the Indians made them even before George Washington slept in Philadelphia [Valley Forge?] That man was from New Tripoli; perhaps he knew something that no one else does. I would like to hear from the Dutch people in the area. They can write to the Blue Mountain Gazette and perhaps we can get a Dutch column together. I’m ‘The Mountain Barbie’ [Barbara Miller].
It makes me wonder why we do not have a “Dutch Corner” [an article written in our dialect]

I think those of us who are Dutch should certainly appreciate what Barbara Miller did to honor and promote our Dutch culture and dialect. She put a lot of time and effort into those articles and we learned much from reading them. From her articles we also discovered that she spend some of her childhood on her grandparent’s farm where Dutch was spoken and later she bought books from Rev. Richard Druckenbrod to aid her in spelling and translating older works. She passed away in 1998, and if any reader knew her, perhaps they could share something more with us. – Translator

Movie Review
by
Joe Korba A Horror Flick For Halloween The Evil Dead II A horror/comedy classic directed by Sam Raimi, who went on to make the Spider Man films. The first Evil Dead is a straight genre film, but the sequel combines the horror with Raimi’s trademark slapstick comedy style. Throw in cult movie icon Bruce Campbell and this late-80’s gorefest is one of the best. It’s not for the faint of heart or people with weak stomachs, however.

People’s EC Church is located at 216 Wagner Street, Lehighton (East Weissport) PA. Trophy Drive Update The Trophy Collection drive that was announced in the last issue of the Town & Country Gazette has been a huge success. In the three days following publication, over 250 trophies were dropped off by the giving residents of our community. Including four large containers from the Lehigh Twsp. Fire Company. Organizer Tracy Berger-Carmen of Bath (Moore Twp.) was brought to tears by the generosity and support of our community. For now, the group has collected enough trophies. A lot of help is needed on Friday October 21 from 3-9 p.m. at the East Bath Rod & Gun Club where the group will be cleaning and fixing the trophies. Tracy is still accepting trophies that are related to little girls, including dance, cheering, pageant and related trophies. With the project moving along, they are now looking for the following items; large boxes and/or plastic totes to store the trophies, packing materials, tape, strong people to help load the trophies, and food donations for the volunteers. They are also looking for people or businesses that can help with the cost of shipping trophies to some of the hospitals either by printing a shipping label or monetary donation. The trophies will then be given to the Outpatient Children’s Cancer Center at Lehigh Valley Hospital Muhlenberg to the children as they reach milestones
in their treatment and recovery. If you are looking for more information on the drive and how you can help, log into Facebook and search “Trophy Drive” for updates. The Blue Mt. Town & Country Gazette Office, located at 4685 Lehigh Drive in Walnutport will serve as a drop off location for any donations for this project.

What are you curled up with? Full Dark, No Stars By Stephen King
To say that King’s latest short-story collection is his darkest work yet is a bold statement and not hyperbole. The book is pitch-black in both subject matter and tone. Unlike much of King’s recent work Full Dark, No Stars doesn’t have many supernatural or fantastic elements ala hive-minded zombies in Cell or dimensional portals in From a Buick 8. He sticks to the basics by putting normal people in terrible (make that absolutely mind-bendingly horrifying, soul-crushing) situations. The first dark tale is set in 1922 and tells the story of the lengths a man will go to keep his family farm. Even if the means to the end mean destroying his family and, ultimately, himself. The protagonist’s mental unraveling begins gradually
then spirals out of control until his terrifying final reckoning. The second story Big Driver takes a revenge tale and flips it on its head. At what point do we become the monster that we’re chasing? You’ll think twice before deciding to take a country road detour after reading this one. The two stories that close the book A Good Marriage and Fair Extension are about what happens when those closest to us become our worst enemies, whether it be because of secrets kept from a significant other or long-time resentment. King takes us down the most sinister path imaginable in both these instances and it make for a very satisfying read. King is a gifted storyteller and shows many of his strengths in short-story collections. Full Dark, No Stars is hands down his best short-story work since Night Shift and that’s a serious compliment. By Joe Korba

Dress Up Your Bathroom Continued from Page 14 eliminate an unsightly view and give the feeling of luxury and more space with taller walls. • Swap Your Hooks. Towel hooks are easy to find and replace, but they are usually boring. Go shopping for some cheap, vintage hooks of different shapes and sizes, paint them all the same color and then hang them in a nice straight line. The detail and “collection” quality will make a big impact—even if they’re covered with towels. • Flowers Always Impress. Fresh flowers in the bathroom OR even just ONE flower in a small vase on the bathroom sink or back of the toilet will make the room fresh and festive. • Roll Covers. Even small necessities, like your toilet paper, deserve storage in a modern roll cover. Just like how people care for their cotton swabs by storing them in a stylish container, people can care for their Cottonelle Clean Care toilet paper like never before with a modernized roll cover. • Go with Color. Shower curtains and towels were made to carry colors and you can change your bathroom in minutes by coordinating and changing the colors here. Maxewell’s favorite lately? Deep brown towels and hand towels with a linen shower curtain. The Cottonelle brand has introduced new designer roll covers, featuring three fashionforward designs inspired by the latest trends. To see more of Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan’s tips to transform your home, visitwww.RespectTheRoll.com and learn how to get a Cottonelle brand designer roll cover.

Home Improvement Tips from a Pro! If you’ve ever owned anything, the one thing you know you can count on is that it’s going to break. It doesn’t really matter what it is. When it comes to your home when it happens it’s almost never inconsequential. Even a simple component in a larger system can cause major problems (as anyone who has ever had a connection fail on their washing machine can attest to). I’ve attempted to put together an outline of how you can prepare and respond when things happen in your home that can really bum you out, and do it in a “green” way. The first thing you need to do is prepare. When you look at the components of a home it could be a singular item (an appliance or hot water heater) or an entire system (HVAC or plumbing). Preparation can be prioritized by looking at you house in the following ways: •Importance •Maintenance history •Age •Find someone to lean on The importance of the components of the home are based on how you live, but a good way to prioritize is based on repair/replacement cost and

potential discomfort/damage. My feeling is that your list should look something like this: HVAC, hot water heater, sump pump, major appliances, etc. Gather as much information that you can on these items and keep it in a home reference manual somewhere conspicuous (after all, when it happens you aren’t going to want to compound the situation by freaking out you can’t find your information). Things to document are: Model Number, Retailer/installer with all contact data, any maintenance done and companies used, size, style. You may think you’ll remember all of that in a time of crisis, but you won’t, and if you aren’t around it will provide whoever stumbles upon this little crisis something to work from. Maintenance. Everything needs some level of maintenance. If you don’t do it, it will break sooner. This list is for you so be honest with yourself. It’s like cheating on a diet – it doesn’t hurt anyone but you and not to beat the analogies to death, but if it looks like garbage it probably is. A good maintenance program can identify problems before they happen and advise if proactive replacement is advisable. Continued on Page 41

Learn Leather Crafting in 4-H
LeatherCrafters 4-H Club of Northampton County is reforming for the 2011-2012 year, with the meetings running through April. The first meeting of the year will be held on Friday, October 21. A representative from Tandy Leather Co. will be present to show the members new techniques and help with the choosing of projects for the 4-H year. Starting in January, the club will meet on the first and third Fridays of each month through April. The club is looking for some new members to join us! Youth ages 8-18 are encouraged to join us to learn this art form. LeatherCrafters 4-H members learn how to tool and craft leather, making projects which will be exhibited at the 4-H Fair in August and then used by the members. The meetings are held at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Moorestown, from 7:30 pm - 9 pm. Membership is limited due to the nature of the projects and the help required, please reserve your space early. For more information or to join LeatherCrafters, please call Janice Martin, 610-

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
Spotlight: NL Field Hockey The field hockey team at Northern Lehigh has been great the past few seasons under the direction of head coach Jessica Frew. This season Frew’s squad is 10-4-2 and has locked up a postseason appearance. NL has had a tough season battling the weather and the two Colonial League powerhouses, Bangor and Southern Lehigh, who have yet to lose a game this season. The bulldogs are bolstered by a tremendous goalie in junior Nicole Horn. Frew had this to say about Nicole, “Nicole has done an outstanding job in the goal for the team this year. Numerous officials have commented on how she kept us in the Southern Lehigh, Northwestern, Palisades and Bangor games. Every game her confidence seems to be improving and it shows in her performance.” Horn is one of the best at her position in the area but she deflects the glory, “...without my team, I Celebrating 5 years of New Ownership September 2011

couldn’t do what I do. We all work together to do [well].” Playoff favorites are undoubtedly undefeated Southern Lehigh and Bangor. Coach Frew knows she has a good team and is not intimidated, “Southern Lehigh and Bangor are both really good teams but they are beatable.” She said in an e-mail. “We lost to Southern Lehigh 0-2 and Bangor 0-1 on a questionable goal. At this point, it is anyone’s game. Whoever shows up to play mentally and physically, regardless of records, will win. Given the opportunity, the girls will be Continued on Page 50

Recipe Round-Up How to Roast a Pumpkin You can only do this with a freshly carved pumpkin! Do not use on a pumpkin that has been carved and sitting out for several days. To bake a fresh 6 to 7 pound pumpkin, halve the pumpkin crosswise and scoop out the seeds and strings. Place halves, hollow side down, in a large baking pan covered with aluminum foil and add a little water. Bake, uncovered, at 375 degrees for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until fork-tender. Remove. When cool, scrape pulp from shells and puree, a little at time, in food processor or blender. Mix with a little salt. To freeze pumpkin puree. Put 1-2 cups in freezer bags along with spices and use in pies. To use pumpkin puree for recipes: Line a
strainer with a double layer of cheesecloth or a flour sack dish towel and let the pumpkin sit to drain out the extra moisture BEFORE cooking with it. Pumpkin is very moist, so in order for your recipe to come out correctly, you MUST strain it. Roasted Pumpkin Seeds Boil seeds in water for 5 minutes. Drain well. Sprinkle with salt or seasoned salt. Place a thin layer on a cookie sheet. Bake at 250 degrees. Stir after 30 minutes. Bake 1/2-1 hour more or until crunchy. *Squash seeds may also be used. Pumpkin Smoothies 1/2 cup pumpkin 3/4 cup milk or vanilla yogurt 1/4 tsp. cinnamon 1/8 tsp. nutmeg 2 tsp. brown sugar 4 ice cubes whipped cream (optional) sprinkles (optional) Place all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth. Pour into 2-3 glasses. Serve with a small amount of whipped cream on top. You may also add orange sprinkles if you like. Serves 2-3. Continued on Page 49

NL Field Hockey Continued from Page 43 ready to play either opponent and they are up for the challenge!” The lady bulldogs are a fierce squad. They have great attacking offensive players in senior Rachel Wagner and junior Kayla Brensinger and great defensive players in junior Morgan Farber and senior Heather Chandler. “I think we did really well. We have a lot of potential and it definitely showed...We finally made our goal of making it to leagues...None of us are ready to pack in just yet and we wouldn’t have made it this far if it wasn’t for our coaches,” Kayla said of her team’s performance. Fellow junior, Farber was reiterating their tremendous teamwork when I asked her about the chemistry between the girls on the team, “Well, the hockey team is one big family. We work together, cry together, fight together, and celebrate together. Through everything, we still manage to overcome obstacles and communicate amongst each other. After every practice and before every game we scream our saying “together” because without each other, we wouldn’t have been able to make it as far as we did.” NL field hockey had a successful 2011 season and
is hoping to continue their success in the playoffs. Coach Frew along with assistant coach Kelly Follweiler are superb at teaching the game. Northern Lehigh’s past season has been spectacular and I’m sure they can continue that excellence; they just have to remember to do it, together.

Solar Project at CIT
The Career Institute of Technology (CIT) is undergoing an on-site solar project installation. Solar arrays on the school’s roof and in its yard, installed and managed by Tangent Energy Solutions, will produce 496 kilowatts of solar power and save the school approximately $639,711 over the course of a 20-year period. Not only will the solar arrays provide money and energy-saving solutions for CIT, they will also provide educational value. Teachers are enhancing their solar and renewable energy training curriculum, and students will be able to work on a model solar module donated by Tangent. Once the system is operational, students will be able to observe real-time changes in the school’s energy supply, between the grid and the solar arrays, based on weather and building power needs.

Tenth Anniversary Continued from Page 52 at the door. Advance ticket sales are preferred to provide an estimate of the number of people to prepare for. Call today for your tickets. You will enjoy the evening and reminisce with your friends. The L.T. Historical Society was organized in 2001. The society has taken on two big projects - working to rebuild the historical centre, the former Trading Post at Indian Trail Park, and restoring St. Paul's Schoolhouse, built in 1865. The schoolhouse restoration process is nearly complete and because of overwhelming support of donated items and the need for more space, an addition to the historical centre is in the planning stages. The addition will be built where a structure was added to the Trading Post years ago; it had been torn down at the time the original building was razed and rebuilt. For the past ten years, the society has maintained the historical centre and schoolhouse and has amassed an impressive collection of artifacts within the two buildings. The buildings are open to the public and admission is free. Open house dates are scheduled twice a month from May to October, October 9 being the last date for this season. However, visitors may call for an appointment throughout the year. To set up an appointment, please call 610-767-5989. Regular meetings are held on the second Monday of each month, at 7 p.m., in the rear of the L.T. Historical Centre. Your presence and participation would be welcome. If you can spare some time to help with society activities, it would be appreciated. There will be two open house dates in December for visitors to browse. Please watch future issues for the holiday dates. The society thanks you for the overwhelming support we have received from everyone for these last ten years and look forward to successful and productive years ahead.
