Hats On!

On Wednesday September 21 students at Northern Lehigh School District were allowed to “buy” permission to wear their hats in school. Students and staff paid $1 each to get a one day pass allowing them to wear their hats. The money was collected to help families in the school district who are deadline with cancer in their lives. The school collected $260 and will split the funds with two families. Mrs. Renee Evans, NL High School Student Council Advisor has lead this fundraiser.

On Our Cover

For this issue we chose a picture by local photographer James Benetzky. It’s a shot taken in October 2010 of the fall foliage looking south along the scenic Walnutport Canal. It’s one of the photographer’s personal favorites and we felt that it captured the natural beauty of our area that we, living here and seeing it all the time, sometimes take for granted. If you’re looking for an opportunity to enjoy the fall flora and see the historic canal the Borough of Walnutport Recreation Board is hosting a Fall Walk on Saturday, October 22nd. The walk will begin at the Canal Pavilion at 1p.m. and after a four-mile round trip participants will return back to the pavilion. Well-behaved and leashed canine companions are also welcome on this picturesque journey down the North Tow Path. For more information about the recreation board’s Fall Walk call Don at 610-767-1822.

Protect Your Family From Fire Fire Prevention Week is being held around the nation on October 9-15, 2011. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) hosts this week to educate families and communities on how to prevent fires and planning for worst. Here are a few quick facts to help prevent fires and protect your family. • On average, seven people died in home fires every day. Adults 65 and over face the highest risk of fire death. • In 2009, U.S. fire departments responded to 362,500 home structure fires. These fires caused 12,650 civilian injuries, 2,565 civilian deaths, $7.6 billion in direct damage. • Roughly two-thirds of home fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. About one in five smoke alarm failures was due to dead batteries. • Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half. • Automatic fire sprinkler systems cut the risk of dying in a home fire by about 80%. • Home fire sprinklers can contain and may even extinguish a fire in less time than it would take the fire department to arrive on the scene. • Cooking equipment is the leading cause of

home structure fires and associated injuries, and was tied for the third leading cause of home fire deaths. • Unattended cooking was by far the leading cause of these fires. • Households using electric ranges have a higher risk of fires than those using gas ranges. • Children under five face a higher risk of nonfire burns associated with cooking than being burned in a cooking fire. • Fires involving heating equipment peak in December, January and February, as do deaths from these fires. Overall, homes fires and home fire deaths are also more common in the cooler months of the year. • The leading factor contributing to heating equipment fires was failure to clean, principally creosote from solid fueled heating equipment, primarily chimneys. • 41% of home electrical fires involved electrical distribution or lighting equipment. • 53% of home electrical fires involved other known types of equipment, including ranges, washers/dryers, fans and space heaters. • On average, there are 35 home candle fires reported per day.

Northern Valley EMS (NOVA)

• More than half of all candle fires start when things that can burn are too close to the candle.

How can I become involved in NOVA?

- As a result of economic factors and a decline of volunteers, many services such as NOVA operate with a combination of volunteers and paid employees. - NOVA has a team of highly dedicated volunteers and paid professionals working around the clock to serve your community. - NOVA is always accepting applications from those interested in joining our Team.

What is the NOVA Auxiliary? - Formed in 1974 NOVA’s Auxiliary is the pioneer of fundraising and provides financial support to NOVA so that NOVA can provide quality EMS services to the community. - Provides services including but not limited to bus trips, annual bazaar with baskets, pie sales, food services for receptions, family events, and parties held in the Northern Valley Social Hall. - The NOVA Auxiliary is voluntary and is always looking for new members. - Membership in the NOVA Auxiliary costs only $2.00/yr & is open to anyone who would like to spend time having fun while being a part of a dynamic group of men and women.

From The Editor’s Desk. There aren’t many things as hard to write about as cancer. It does seem counterintuitive because there is so much to say about this terrible disease. Almost everyone has been touched by it in some way - a member of your family, friend, coworker, neighbor or maybe even you. I think the difficulty I have in writing about cancer is the same problem that people find in talking about it, or even facing a friend or family member who is suffering from it. It’s the fact that it makes us face our own mortality. Cancer isn’t prejudiced; it affects young and old, rich and poor. It doesn’t care about the color of your skin and although some factors, smoking or drinking, might increase your chances it afflicts some of the healthiest people as well. The good news is that cancer isn’t unbeatable. But to beat it, we have to confront it, which isn’t easy. We have to have frank discussions about prevention and early detection. October is the 25th anniversary of Breast Cancer Awareness month, what better time to promote early detection and

Joe Korba

Page 5

prevention? We have to work to change society’s attitude from avoidance to proactive awareness. Breast Cancer is beatable if detected early by screening; the prognosis grows far grimmer the longer the cancer has to grow. It’s vital for women to be aware of the risks and the symptoms. There are so many resources for breast cancer information online and, of course, at your doctor. One of the oldest and the largest organizations is Susan G. Komen for the cure. Komen is a global organization that funds research and breast cancer awareness worldwide. If you’d like to find out more about Susan G. Komen or find breast cancer resources visit their website: www.komen. org.

Unwanted trophies collection to Cheer young cancer patients Tracy Berger-Carmen of Bath (Moore Twp.) is conducting a "Trophy Drive". A collection of used and unwanted trophies will be collected, cleaned and re-tagged with a brass plate that says "Way to go". The trophies will then be given to the Outpatient Childrens Cancer Center at Lehigh Valley Hospital Muhlenberg to the children as they reach milestones in their treatment and recovery. The idea originated from a fellow race car driver who gives his personal trophies to a New Jersey hospital. A few months ago while racing at Grandview Speedway with NEETS (Northeast En- duro Tour Series), some racers were in the pits after a race and sparked the idea to give a trophy to a child with cancer. Many drivers get so many trophies that they give them away to family members. When Berger-Carmen mentioned the idea, she was given two trophies that same day from a driver who places in the top five on a regular basis. "Many people throw these in the back of a closet or worse yet a landfill, Berger-

Carmen said. Here they are being recycled and given to a child to put a smile on their face.” Many trophy drives will be taking place during the next few months. For more information on Trophy Drive or if your business would like to have a Trophy Drive dropoff, log into Facebook under "Trophy Drive" for updates on dropoff locations and to also see how close they are to meeting the goal of 300 trophies. The Blue Mt. Town & Country Gazette Office, located at 4685 Lehigh Drive in Walnutport will serve as a drop off location.

Memory Diamonds

Page 15

Lisa Csencsits

By Pat Ritz Memory diamonds, saved to capture time Captured in a card, a letter or even a note Written by the hand of a child The alphabet distorted, letters placed in wrong sequences Forming thoughts that only a Mom or Dad could decipher The love that flows from past years Drifting into the present Placing the past into tears that know That life is a true gift Memory diamonds meant to live on. Meant to restore those loose frayed ends of life Bringing it all together in time and love Living on into eternity The poem “ Memory Diamonds” was born one day this August when I was searching for something. I opened my cedar chest and there before me lay a pile of Memory Diamonds; notes, pictures drawn by my children many years ago. Also among them were two letters, sent to mom and dad from a homesick little Brownie, wanting to come home from Camp Mosey Wood. Pat Ritz is a local writer/poet who resides in Danielsville.

Mr. Pate's presentation will begin at 7:00 pm on Monday, October 10 in the Palmerton Library's Gallery. He will give a PowerPoint lecture on U. S. - Japanese Friendship Dolls of the 1920's, one of which was exhibited in Palmerton in March, 1928. Two local authors will be visiting the Palmerton Area Library. Paul Sheckler will present a book talk on Friday, October 21 at 11 a.m. about his newly released book The Hawk Knows. This is the second book of fiction written by Mr. Sheckler, the first being Come Back in 2008. He has also written six poetry books. While currently living in California with his family, Mr. Sheckler was raised in Palmerton, and received his B.A. degree in Journalism at Penn State University. and tragedy. There is beauty and the lingering pain from war in Iraq, both climaxing on the Reservation. Copies of the book signed by the author will be available. On Saturday October 29, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., Autumn Jordon will be at the library for a meet and greet. 2010 Golden Leaf Winner for “Best First Book” and romance Writers of America 2009 Golden Heart Finalist author Autumn Jordon is a quiet nut who has earned the title of “trouble” by her family and friends. Even her pets look at her with a cautious eye at times. Life is never dull in her valley surrounded by the beautiful Blue Mountains of northeast Pennsylvania. She’s never bored as she has a long list of hobbies. No matter what Autumn is doing, she’s busy dreaming up ideas to put her very believable characters of her romantic suspense novels in grave danger. Come meet her at a signing for her new release, In the Presence of Evil at the Palmerton Area Library on October 29, 2011 from 11am-1pm.

Plans are moving along for the Tenth anniversary dinner to be held at the Lehigh Township Fire Company in Cherryville on November 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. An "Olde fashioned turkey dinner" will be served by the Country Garden to celebrate ten years of the historical society's service to the community. Autumn is a season for big decisions -- like whether or not it's too late to start spring cleaning. Autumn -- time to drag out your winter clothes and see what kind of summer fun the moths had. The autumn leaves are a lot like raising kids. First they turn on you, and then they fly away. And next thing you know, you look out the window and they're back! I could tell there was a hint of autumn in the air when my son's football smashed me in the face.

Each year the youth of People’s EC make a short-term mission trip and this helps them raise the funds to take that trip. The youth returned in August from a week in Newark, NY where they helped to refurbish a nursing home and hospital, assisted with day care for the children of migrant workers, helped to build and refurbish a hospice center for children with terminal cancer and also assisted disabled families to make their homes handicapped accessible. The youth range between 13 and 18 years old and have a true passion to help others and rely heavily on these fundraisers to ensure they can complete a mission every summer. SHS Dedication Over 75 people gathered on September 25, 2011 for the dedication of the Slatington Memorial Park on Main and Second St.'s in Slatington. The park, which is situated on the grounds of the old Slatington High School (1917-1982) has been in the works for nearly 10 years. The park project which is currently complete with phase 1, has been funded by grants from Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, Green Future Fund and the Alumni of Slatington High School. Many others have also been involved in helping the project by donating time and resources into the project. The project is ongoing and will see the addition of a drinking fountain in the spring of 2012, a bike rack and trashcans as well as additional slanted parking, plaques, owls and cornerstone from the old high school and continuous landscaping, according to Borough Councilman Dan Stevens. Stevens is president of the Northern Lehigh Future Focus an instrumental group in the project. "We have already have weddings, prom photos and the St. Johns Peach Festival in the park, its a

nice place to sit and relax," he said about his hopes for the park "use your imagination." Stevens said that there is a small fee for residents who wish to reserve the park and gazebo for a private event such as a wedding or birthday party, but if you are just looking to drop by and enjoy the park for a little while, no reservation is required. The borough encourages residents to use this park and hopes to see concerts and future community events happen there. Those who have donated monetary funds to the project have received benches at the park, including the class of 1959, which was the last to walk to halls of Slatington High School, and the last graduating class. Members of the 1959 graduating class were present at the dedication, Mrs. Shirley (Roth) Wagner said "We wore it out." Also at the dedication, among dignitaries and friends, was Dolores Rowlands from the class of 1945. They are celebrating their 66th class reunion. By Alice Wanamaker

Northampton High School Receives Award of Appreciation The Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society of Pennsylvania is presenting an award to the Fine and Digital Arts Department of the Northampton Area High School on Thursday, October 20, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the Kreidersville Covered Bridge, 100 Covered Bridge Road, Northampton, PA. If raining, the presentation will take place in the shelter of the 116 foot long Kreidersville Covered Bridge, the last historic covered bridge in Northampton County. One of the missions of theTheodore Burr Covered Bridge Society of Pennsylvania (ATBCBS@), the foremost authority on covered bridges in Pennsylvania, is to encourage the preservation of a disappearing resource, Pennsylvania’s covered bridges. In recognition of the creative efforts of the Fine and Digital Arts Department at the Northampton Area High School (ANAHS@) the TBCBS is giving it an Award of Appreciation Afor contributing to the awareness of covered bridges@ through its students’ 2011 video production on the Kreidersville Covered Bridge (the AKCB@).

The Kreidersville Covered Bridge Association (the AKCBA@), requested student volunteers to work on a campaign to promote the KCB and the KCBA’s upcoming events. Taylor Emmons and Miranda Miller, two students in the Digital Arts Program at NAHS, both of whom graduated in 2011, volunteered to create a video under the direction of their instructor, Mrs. Tara Gray. Working closely with the KCBA, doing much independent research, and involving other NAHS students in the production, Ms. Emmons and Ms. Miller produced, scripted, directed, shot, scored and edited a 6.3 minute video which has been uploaded to YouTube. (SEE VIDEO AT http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugVE5aXzugU ). The students’ video and their interview was also seen on RCN’s Community Spotlight show on the episode featuring the KCB which was broadcast on tape six times in May and June 2011; they spent the day with RCN’s production team. The KCBA is a welcoming group of volunteers Continued on Page 39

TRANSLATION Several years ago around Christmas time, I enjoyed a really good horseradish at my fatherin-law’s house. My eyes were watering, my nose was completely opened and beads of perspiration were standing on my forehead. I asked him where he bought that horseradish and he replied that it had grown in his garden and he, himself, had prepared it. At that time, I also had a garden in my back yard and the next year my father-inlaw brought me a few horseradish roots which I planted in a corner of my garden. When it was time in the fall to make the horseradish, my father-in-law came down to my place, bringing vinegar and sugar with him. After I pulled the horseradish from the garden and washed it, we went into the kitchen to do the preparation. Now I did not have a horseradish grater but my wife had recently bought one of those new food processor machines [The Dutch word is made up: food chopper or grinder]. I put the horseradish in it and turned it on. O misery! The odor was unbelievably strong! I had wet eyes and the water was running down my face. My father-in-law, who also looked like I did, yelled, “Open the windows; we must get some fresh air in here.” It was so bad that even opening the windows did not help very much. Around that time my boy came home from school. He walked into the kitchen and after a good laugh, said, “I think that this is the first time I have seen two grown men crying together.” Later, after more fresh air came into the kitchen, my father-in-law added the vinegar and sugar to finish preparing it. He did not need to follow a recipe; he just tasted it and added more vinegar or sugar till he had it correct. And I must tell you that it sure tasted good later when we put it on some ham. Yes, it was not the right way to prepare it, but it was certainly worth the trouble.

Recipe Round-Up Pennsylvania Apples in Season at Local Farm Markets It’s apple season and local farm markets will be stocked with old favorites like Red Delicious and Gala, newer varieties like Honeycrisp™, and heirloom varieties like Northern Spy and Winesap. “Pennsylvania apple growers produce approximately 440 million pounds of apples each year, making Pennsylvania the fourth largest apple-producing state in the country,” said Karin Rodriguez, executive director for the Pennsylvania Apple Marketing Program. “In addition, there are literally hundreds of different varieties grown across the state.” Purchasing apples at a local farm market has many benefits. Food that is purchased locally is fresher than food which is imported from other states and countries. In addition, locally-produced and purchased food leaves a smaller carbon

footprint. And buying locally grown apples supports both the local economy and the growers in the community. Another great benefit to shopping at a farm market is that you can meet and talk with the growers and even sample a new apple variety. “There are Pennsylvania growers who are fifth, sixth and even seventh generation,” said Rodriguez. “When you visit their markets, you actually get to see first hand where your food was grown and meet the person who grew it.”

The Pennsylvania Apple Marketing Program’s website, www.pennsylvaniaapples.org, is a quick and easy resource to locate farm markets around the state. And a new mobile website for smart phones makes it easy to find markets when you’re on the road. In addition to a variety of fresh apples, many markets also sell fresh cider, as well as a variety of homemade apple goods like pies, dumplings, sauce and butter. “Whether you’re looking for a day of activity, or just need to pick up some fresh apples for the kids’ lunches, Pennsylvania’s farm markets really do have something for everyone,” said Rodriguez. Enjoy this multi-generation family favorite recipe from one of our growers. For more recipes, or to learn more about Pennsylvania apples, go to www.pennsylvaniaapples.org.

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer

Mid-season Varsity Football Round-up

We have reached the half-way point of the 2011 varsity football season. After 5 games, we can start to see how the teams’ seasons will pan out and if the playoffs are in their future. Lehighton (2-3) - The Indians have had an up and down season. Their 2-3 record isn’t an accurate depiction of their ability and their head coach George Ebbert agrees, “We are a little disappointed with our 2-3 start. We feel we are better than that and had the potential to be 5-0 at this point. We made too many mistakes and deserve to be 2-3.” They have a tough game next week against Stroudsburg. That game could determine Lehighton’s postseason fate. Parkland (3-2) – Even though Parkland has two losses, those games

were lost by 7 points or less. Parkland has playoff potential. They have tough matchups against Central Catholic and Whitehall left in their season. If the Trojans play to the best of their potential, don’t be surprised if they finish with at least 6 wins. Northampton (1-4) – Northampton has had a disappointing season so far. They have tough games left on their schedule against Whitehall and Catasaqua. Even with a dismal start, Coach Robert Steckel is still optimistic about their season, “I think that our season is wide open. We play some great competition, but our kids are continuing to improve.” Palmerton (3-2) – The Blue Bombers have a nice record to show after the first five games of the season but, things will be getting tough for them with their backloaded schedule. They play Northwestern, Bangor, Catty, Pen Argyl and Northern Lehigh. How they fare against these competitors will be the true test. Northwestern (4-1) – Northwestern is similar to Palmerton. They have a great record but, they have tough competition left to play in the rest of this season. Northwestern’s success has been a surprise to people this year but, if they notch at least two wins in their remaining 5 games they Continued on Page 49

Football Round-up Continued from Page 48 will be in good position for the postseason. Northern Lehigh (5-0) – The Bulldogs are a very good team. They are undefeated so far this season but they play Pen Argyl next, then Northwestern and Bangor, all three of which are Colonial League powerhouses. NL relies a lot on passing the ball this year and if senior quarterback Dylan Hofmann can perform well against these tough teams, Northern Lehigh will be in good shape.

Bulldogs Blank Salisbury on Homecoming The condition of the playing field at Bulldog Stadium had been a topic of discussion prior to the scheduled homecoming game on September 30 after Mother Nature wreaked havoc on it with heavy rains and flooding. It was uncertain if Northern Lehigh would be able to play their game with the way the field was going into Friday practice. But the Bulldogs didn’t let the field conditions stop them from having their homecoming game, and Salisbury did not stop them on the field either! The bulldogs stormed out of the gate and had the ball in Salisbury’s red zone but, a turnover foiled that drive. After the first of many great defensive stands for NL, they got the ball back and scored a touchdown on a scramble by Senior quarterback Dylan Hofmann. After Kirk Bender completed the PAT, they kicked the ball to the Falcons of Salisbury. The falcons mustered up a little offense against the dogs’ defense but, senior cornerback David Getz halted Salisbury’s drive by intercepting a pass. NL took the ball right down the field on Salisbury on their next drive. The offensive line was working hard all night, dealing with the mud puddles and the sand that was put on the field during the week to combat the moisture in the ground. Senior offensive lineman Kyle Wasilkowski had this to say about the battle in the trenches, “It was really muddy. It was better this week than last week, but it was a tough battle. We are looking for the [offensive] line to improve every week.” Hofmann

The Bulldog o-line readies for battle.

capped off the drive by completing a touchdown pass to senior tight end Nick Valentini. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 14-0. S t a r t i n g the second quarter with a two touchdown lead the bulldogs still didn’t take the pedal off the gas. Senior running back Trevor Yashur scampered 39 yards for a touchdown. After another great defensive series, Hofmann and the dogs marched right down the field and Dylan threw a laser of a pass to junior wide receiver Darien Middaugh. Getz produced on the offensive side of the ball before halftime by catching a 7 yard pass from Hofmann. Heading into the locker room at halftime Northern Lehigh had a comfortable lead of 35-0. During intermission, the 2011 homecoming king and queen were announced. Valentini was named the king and Colonial League basketball star Aimee Oertner won the honors of homecoming queen. Other football players on homecoming court were: Bender, Dalton Johnson and Hofmann. After the traditional high school homecoming festivities concluded the boys of fall were back out on the field ready for some second half action. The third quarter was a quieter one for the bulldogs. They only put 6 points up on the board courtesy of a Getz touchdown run. The defense really stood tall during the third quarter by not allowing Salisbury to start anything in all facets of the game. When time expired in the third quarter, NL was beating Salisbury 41-0. The fourth quarter was an easy one for Northern Lehigh. Some underclassmen got some time to shine at the varsity level. One player, sophomore Chance Delong made an interception in his own end zone to keep the shutout alive late in the 4th quarter. When it was all said and done the Bulldogs came out victorious by a final score of 41-0. Walking off the field after the game, NL coach Joe Tout said this about his players, “They played real well. They worked hard. Hofmann was producing all across the board tonight.” The Bulldogs breezed by Salisbury in this game, with the defense in total control throughout the entire game. They allowed Salisbury to gain only 61 yards of total offense all night. One of the leaders Continued on Page 57

of the defense for NL, senior Kyle Schomp, was high spirited when I talked to him after the game and he had this to say about the defenses’ efforts, “I feel really good about the game. We played well. We hit them hard.” Through the first five games of their season Northern Lehigh won all of them by a comfortable margin. Things will start to get tough for Joe Tout and his squad in the upcoming weeks. They play fellow undefeated teams, Pen Argyl on October 8, then they play Northwestern Lehigh in week 7 of the season and Bangor in week 8. The bulldogs will need to work hard in the upcoming weeks if they would like to keep their untarnished record for the rest of the season. By Tyler Trumbauer

The Gathering

It's always better in the sunshine but The Gathering goes on rain or shine! The 8th annual Gathering was held on Saturday October 1 at the trailhead in Slatington in slight rain throughout the day and heavier rain in the evening. Live music was heard throughout the day, with the bands striking it up after 5 p.m. Ducks filled the creek just after 4 p.m. and raced to the finish line in the Great Slatington Duck Race. Vendors lined up throughout the parking lot offering food, crafts, and home products to visitors throughout the day. At one of the largest events in our area during the year, music was played, friends were made (or reacquainted) and fun was had!

Winter Vacation Tanning Part I If you are like most people, you are planning your fall or winter getaway. Traveling this time of year is a wonderful way to get rid of the winter blues and break up the monotony of the cold winter. To help you have the best possible vacation don’t forget your skin before you go! A lot of people take winter vacations to tropical locations and don’t realize that the sun is more intense than it is here in the Northeast. With the intensity, comes a greater chance of a painful and unpleasant sunburn. A great way to combat vacation sunburn is to get a base tan before you go. Tanning (not burning) is your skins natural response to UV exposure whether it’s via the sun or a tanning bed. A tan is basically your body’s protective umbrella from the sun. The upper layer of your skin darkens through the production of melanin, a natural material that is used by your body to reduce the transparency in

the upper layers of skin, creating protection for you. This protective layer doesn’t happen overnight, depending on your skin type and coloration, creating a good base tan can take at least month or more. So make sure you make time for yourself to get into your favorite tanning salon for a month or so before you go on vacation so that you have a good base tan to start your vacation. And when you get to your favorite beach vacation don’t forget to apply sunscreen. Just because you have gotten a great base tan doesn’t mean you don’t need to use a sunscreen. Look for tips on getting the most out of your tanning in the next article! Laura Stauffer is the owner of Aloha Salon and Spa in Walnutport bringing 5 years make up styling and 4 years salon experience to our readers. Lehigh Township Historical Society Did you know ...? The History of Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1 Residents of Lehigh Township gathered in January of 1944 to discuss the possibility of forming a volunteer fire company for Lehigh Township. In February of 1944, a meeting was held to discuss procedures and what was needed to form a fire station. In the beginning, meetings were held at schools and businesses in the

township. Eventually, officers were elected and By-laws were adopted. The first president, 19441945, was Robert Spangler. The certified Decree of Incorporation of Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire. Co. No. 1 was dated April 10, 1944. Through the next ten years, members met twice a month and developed procedures to purchase equipment and land to build a fire station, plus training members as firefighters. In August of 1945, the first piece of fire apparatus was placed into service and after that, additional equipment was purchased The first truck was housed in Dieter’s Foundry which was also the meeting place. In 1946, land was purchased at the intersection in Cherryville which is now the site of Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1. In 1954, the building consisted of two bays, an office, a hall and a kitchen. In the following years, additional apparatus was added and equipment was purchased. Continued on Page 65
