It does not matter what church you go to or what your political affiliation is. It will not be a regular church service. This is a gathering of prayer for the heart and soul and future of our nation, our families, and the universal Body of Christ world-wide. “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

The history of Halloween - how it all Started
Halloween began as the festival of Samhain. It was part of the ancient Celtic religion in Britain and other parts of Europe. At the end of summer, the Celts thought the barrier between our world and the world of ghosts and spirits got really thin. This meant weird creatures with strange powers could wander about on Earth. The Celts had a big party. It was all about scaring away the ghosts and spirits. Later, with the Christian religion, the day became known as All Hallows' Eve - the day before All Saints' Day on 1 November. America picks up the pace It's in America that Halloween has really taken off. Irish immigrants to the United States raised the popularity of Halloween during the 19th century. During the 20th century it became more and more popular, with traditions like pumpkin carvingand trick or treating becoming part of TV shows, books and movies.

Bethel UCC Memorial plaque dedication for Mildred Edwards submitted by Linda Nierer
Mildred’s Family and Friends were present at Bethel Church on September 30th to remember Mildred’s dedication to her church and community. Wendy her oldest granddaughter and God child shared memories of her grandmother with the congregation. White Chocolate Dipped Oreo Mummy Pops • Oreos (or other Chocolate Vanilla Creme Filled Cookies) • White Chocolate • Coconut Oil • Chocolate Chips • Lollipop Sticks 1. Separate the 2 sides of your oreos. 2. Melt you white chocolate chips and coconut oil in the microwave. Melt at 50% power for 1 minute, then stir your chocolate chips, then melt for additional 30 seconds at a time, still at 50% power, till creamy. (White chocolate is trickier to melt, so be careful not to over do it otherwise it will cease up!) 3. Spread a dab of white chocolate over the creme on 1 side of the cookie and stick a lollipop stick into the chocolate. Top with second side of cookie and allow to rest until hardened. 4. Dip each oreo pop into the melted white chocolate and allow excess chocolate to drip back into your bowl. Lay pop down on parchment paper. Allow chocolate to harden, you can put it in your freezer for a few minutes for it to harden quickly. 5. Dip again into the white chocolate and repeat step 4. Add 2 chocolate chips to the top of the oreos while chocolate is still soft. 6. Drizzle white chocolate over the top of oreo pops in criss cross patterns to make it look like mummies.

How does it look out there so far with the rabbits and pheasants? If you can’t get that pheasant rooster which went through your area the other day, I will give you some good advice. Do it like a farmer had once to get a pheasant that walked around so big in front of him right under his nose. Every time he saw him walking around the barnyard he went for his gun. By the time he came with his gun and had it loaded, the pheasant was gone. The farmer decided he

would sit inside by the window with the gun loaded until the pheasant came and the gun barrel stuck out through the window, ready to shoot. He sat there for a long, long time, however, one thinks, the pheasant might have “smelled something wrong.” He just didn’t come around. It became dark and the farmer still sat there. When it was time to go in bed, he decided to leave the gun sticking out the window so when he see the pheasant early the next morning everything was ready for shooting. What do you think that the farmer saw the next morning when he got up? The pheasant sat on the gun barrel which was stuck out the window. This certainly made the farmer think. He knew that shooting wouldn’t accomplish anything and he knew he was could not come close enough to catch him with his hands. He thought for a while to figure out a way [to get that pheasant.] He thought the rooster would be hungry so early in the morning, so he hollowed out a corn kernel with his pocket knife and stuck in one of his wife’s sleeping pills which the doctor gave her to take evenings when she could not sleep. Then he tied this corn kernel to a string and let it out the upstairs window so it could come right down in front of the

pheasant on the gun barrel. When the pheasant saw the kernel he ate it straight away. He sat there for a while on the gun barrel but when the little sleeping pill in the corn kernel began to work, the pheasant fell asleep. Then the farmer snuck over and snagged the pheasant with his hands. [A ‘Liar’s Contest’, was a very popular event at many Dutch gatherings in the past and one that still continues today at the Kutztown Folk Festival every July in which the participants attempt to outdo each other in spinning tall tales. Florence Baver’s story here may have been created for one of them. In another article in her newspaper column she mentions that she even participated in one at a park in Egypt where Pumpernickel Bill (William Troxell) was the MC. From this entry you get an idea of the tall tales you may hear on those occasions. Obviously the stories presented at those events are created yuscht fer Schpass, just for fun.]

Halloween Fun Facts Because the movie Halloween (1978) was on such a tight budget, they had to use the cheapest mask they could find for the character Michael Myers, which turned out to be a William Shatner Star Trek mask. Shatner initially didn’t know the mask was in his likeness, but when he found out years later, he said he was honored. The first Jack O’lanterns were actually made from turnips. Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas. The word “witch” comes from the Old English wicce, meaning “wise woman.” In fact, wiccan were highly respected people at one time. According to popular belief, witches held one of their two main meetings, or sabbats, on Halloween night. Samhainophobia is the fear of Halloween. Fifty percent of kids prefer to receive chocolate candy for Halloween, compared with 24% who prefer non-chocolate candy and 10% who preferred gum. The owl is a popular Halloween image. In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches, and to hear
an owl's call meant someone was about to die. According to Irish legend, Jack O’Lanterns are named after a stingy man named Jack who, because he tricked the devil several times, was forbidden entrance into both heaven and hell. He was condemned to wander the Earth, waving his lantern to lead people away from their paths. The largest pumpkin ever measured was grown by Norm Craven, who broke the world record in 1993 with a 836 lb. pumpkin. Stephen Clarke holds the record for the world’s fastest pumpkin carving time: 24.03 seconds, smashing his previous record of 54.72 seconds. The rules of the competition state that the pumpkin must weigh less than 24 pounds and be carved in a traditional way, which requires at least eyes, nose, ears, and a mouth. Trick-or-treating evolved from the ancient Celtic tradition of putting out treats and food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year. The first known mention of trick-or-treating in print in North America occurred in 1927 in Blackie, Alberta, Canada.

Halloween can be the spookiest night of the year, but keeping your pets safe doesn’t have to be tricky. The ASPCA recommends taking these simple, common sense precautions to keep your pet happy and healthy all the way to Nov. 1. 1. Don’t feed your pets Halloween candy, especially if it contains chocolate or xylitol (a common sugar substitute found in sugar-free candies and gum); 2. Make sure your pet is properly identified (microchip, collar and ID tag) in case s/he escapes through the open door while you’re distracted with trick-or-treaters; 3. Keep lit candles and jack-o-lanterns out of reach of pets; 4. If you plan to put a costume on your pet, make sure it fits properly and is comfortable, doesn’t have any pieces that can easily be chewed off, and doesn’t interfere with your pet’s sight, hearing, breathing, opening its mouth, or moving. Take time to get your pet accustomed to the costume before Halloween, and never leave your pet unsupervised while he/ she is wearing a costume; 5. Keep glow sticks and glow jewelry away from your pets. Although the liquid in these products isn’t likely toxic, it tastes really bad and makes pets salivate excessively and act strangely; 6. If your pet is wary of strangers or has a tendency to bite, put him/her in another room during trickor-treating hours or provide him/her with a safe hiding place; 7. Keep your pet inside.

Chess is an amazing game! It was created in the 6th century with pieces like the King and Queen and others. It’s easy to learn, and fun to play. St. John Neumann Regional School has a Chess Club activity after school every ‘Terrific Tuesday’ for an hour. Students appreciate and thank Mr. P. Kern, Sister V. Stephanie and parent aides for all that they do. A fifth-grade student Cannon commented,“The Chess Club was exciting, puzzling, and fun. It was so nice of Mr. Kern to buy new equipment for us. I really recommend joining.”

Northampton Area High School Theatre Company Presents ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ By KERI LINDENMUTH
On October 12 and 13, Northampton Area High School’s Theatre Company brought the true and moving story of Anne Frank to life on stage in their production of “The Diary of Anne Frank.” Based on the best-selling book “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl,” the play gives audiences a glimpse into the more than two years Anne and her family spent hiding from the Nazis in an Amsterdam annex during World War II. The play opens after the end of the war, with Otto Frank, Anne’s father, returning to the empty annex where his family and their friends, the Van Daans, once hid. There he finds Anne’s diary and the play transports audiences back to 1942 and the Frank’s arrival to the annex. The play follows the Franks and Van Daans as they live quietly above the shop along the Amsterdam canals. During the day, they can barely move and must sit quietly until the business is closed. Food and even water are limited. They are given rations and news from the generous Miep Geis and Mr. Kraler, employees of the shop. As food and patience run low, tensions arise between the two families stuck in the small rooms hidden behind a book case. The impatient and grouchy Doctor Dussell soon joins the families in the annex. The audience witnesses the families during their fear of air raids and intruders and during their joys of Ally invasions. Soon, romance blooms between Anne and the Van Daan son Peter. However, only a year before the end of the war, the families are discovered by the Nazis and sent to concentration camps. Only Otto survives. The play was directed by Gianna Neal, who said she knew this heartbreaking production would not be an easy one for students. However, Neal says students in the cast “really tried to empathize with the people of the play.” “I watched them have so many moments of clarity as they connected to their character on a personal level,” she continues. Celia Doll portrayed Anne Frank, perfectly capturing the young girl’s innocence and her strength, not letting the walls of the cramped annex limit her imagination, kindness, and love for those around her. Brandon Costanzo played Otto Frank, the patriarch of the family who leads them into hiding. He bravely attempts to maintain a sense of normalcy in the annex even as war and death wage around them. He teaches Anne, his daughter Margot, and 42
Peter their lessons. He reads Anne stories. He even leads the families in a Hanukah celebration. Elaina Bastow played Anne’s mother Edith. The protective Edith and Anne have a tense relationship at first, but soon grow closer. Senior Korina Zambrano played Margot Frank. Her quietness makes her different from her outgoing sister in every way. Billy Bachiashvili and Kaitlin Kolonia played Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, whose bickering stands in stark contrast to the loving relationship of the Franks. When it is revealed that Mr.Van Daan has been stealing food, the couple is nearly kicked out of the annex. Austin Fleury played Peter Van Daan. Stubborn and lonesome at first, Peter soon grows fond of the outgoing Anne and the two form a deep friendship that give them each something to look forward to as the war drags on. Tulsa McGinnis played Doctor Dussell. Cranky and serious, his quarrelling with Anne brings several light moments to the otherwise heavy production. Neal was impressed with her students’ ability to bring this story to life. “They keep [Anne’s] spirit alive and breathe new life into her account of the war and [the Franks’] hiding,” she says. This play, says Neal, teaches the student actors and the audience not only about “these horrific events in history, but also much about human nature, love, and growing up.” They are lessons audiences can relate to 70 years later.

Halloween Health and Safety Tips submitted by cdc.gov
Fall celebrations like Halloween and Harvest Day are fun times for children, who can dress up in costumes, enjoy parties, and eat yummy treats. These celebrations also provide a chance to give out healthy snacks, get physical activity, and focus on safety. Check out these tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for trick-or-treaters and party guests.
Going trick-or-treating?
S A F E
Swords, knives, and other costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible. Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult. Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat.
H
Hold a flashlight while trick-ortreating to help you see and others see you. WALK and don’t run from house to house.
A
Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent possible skin and eye irritation.
L
Look both ways before crossing the street. Use crosswalks wherever possible.
L
Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.
O
Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.
W
Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.
E
Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.
E
Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses. Never accept rides from strangers.
N
Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flameresistant costumes.
Expecting trick-or-treaters or party guests?
Follow these tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for everyone: Provide healthier treats for trick-or-treaters such as low-calorie treats and drinks. For guests, offer a variety of fruits and vegetables. Use party games and trick-or-treat time as an opportunity for kids to get their daily dose of 60 minutes of physical activity. Be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could cause someone to fall. Keep candle-lit jack o’lanterns and luminaries away from doorsteps, walkways, landings, and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of the reach of pets and small children, and never leave them unattended. Remind drivers to watch out for trick-or-treaters and to drive safely. 46

DIY Simple Halloween Costumes on a Dime submitted by chrissyadventures
Cheap DIY Halloween Costumes Cereal Killer (Cute take on a Serial Killer) – This one is one of my favorites because it takes something unthinkable and makes it cute! All you need is: • a plain white tee-shirt • some safety pins • a few small boxes of cereal (like we use to get in school). They are sold at all grocery stores. • 1 small tube of fake blood or a red marker To make the costume all you do is drip tiny spots of fake blood on to shirt or use red marker to make red splatter. Let shirt dry. Dress the child warm, (put the tee-shirt over a long sleeve shirt for warmth). Then remove the small bags of cereal from 3 or 4 boxes. Set aside to eat later. Punch safety-pin through back of box and then pin it the front of shirt. Can pin on back of shirt too. The child wears the boxes with red marks on shirt and could carry a fake knife, gun, bow and arrow, or he could just carry a big plastic spoon from your kitchen! Boom – cute little “cereal killer”.
Pretty Fairy: This one is girly. Since young children’s costumes have very few accessories, this one is cheap if you buy these items at a Dollar Tree or Everything is $1 store. Her regular clothes will do. You could use a pretty dress or jeans and a teeshirt for warmth.Your accessories make the costume, not the clothes. Here’s what you need: Pick up any 3 of these items: • Tiara • A wand • Sparkly hair attachments (usually come as a head band) • Plastic jewel ring • Glittery flaring skirt Pumpkin: Children’s costumes are all about the accessories because kids don’t do well with face paint. This one is pretty simple too. Here’s what you need: • Orange shirt and pants. • 1 pumpkin head band • face paint optional If they already have orange clothes, this one is the most simple. Dress them. Put on head band. Optional: Paint eyes, nose and mouth with black face paint to make jack-o-lantern appearance.

3 Lessons The Right Internship Can Teach College Students submitted by Ashley Pontius
Sometimes what you learn outside the classroom in college can be more important than what you learn inside the classroom. In the summer of 2004, Ryan Coon decided to intern at College Works Painting (www.collegeworks. com), a company that hires high-achieving university students and trains them on the basics of managing a business from start to finish. Each selected intern oversees the marketing, sales, production management and customer relations of a housepainting business. Coon took on the internship as a freshman at University of Illinois. The experience changed his life. “I managed a territory in the suburbs of Chicago for College Works Painting,” Coon says. “I learned a lot that summer and it helped me in some ways I didn’t even realize until years later.” Coon says he learned three important lessons. Focus is important.“There are a lot of distractions,” he says, “so when you own a business you need to ignore the distractions, remove the stress and get it done.” Persistence pays off.“It takes a lot of nights to be an overnight success,” Coon says. “Everybody said Uber was an overnight success but it didn’t make it big until it was in business for 10 years.” Select a good team. “You have to be able to trust your team,” Coon says.“Having a great team is very important.” Today, Coon is co-founder and CEO of a company called Avail, an online property management platform for small, independent landlords. In February 2011, he left a career in investment banking to pursue his entrepreneural dream. Coon says his experience at College Works helped prepare him to take that leap of faith. More than 50,000 students apply to intern at
College Works Painting annually just like Coon did, yet only 2,000 interns are hired. Matt Stewart, entrepreneur and co-CEO of College Works, says over 90 percent of their alumni find college-graduate-level jobs within three months of obtaining their degree. “It’s an incredibly difficult challenge, managing your own business – and that’s what our interns are doing,” Stewart says. “Participating students emerge from the experience with a robust skills set and a competitive edge that sets them apart in a widening field of job applicants after graduation. We’re building a stronger workforce, better prepared to create a stronger economy.’’ Young people won’t gain these necessary skills from an easy internship, he says. These days, the company name on your resume holds little to no weight. It’s not who you interned for, but what you did during your internship that matters, Stewart says. Coon says the skills learned in the right internship are critical to success later in life. “It gave me a good foundation in business principles that I am still using today.” About College Works Painting Matt Stewart is co-founder of College Works Painting (www.collegeworks.com), which provides real-world business experience for thousands of college students each year. The award-winning program offers high-quality house-painting services for homeowners and is in their 25th year of business.
