1. Go During Safe Trick Or Treat Times You don’t have to wait until it is pitch-black outside to go trick-or-treating. A good trick or treat time is right after an early dinner and just before dusk when you can keep better track of your children and you are able to see the others that you encounter on the street. Besides, if you are the first person there, you will have the best selection of candy!

2. Steer Clear Of Masks While masks are a fun part of many costumes, do your best to recreate the mask with face paint. Having a mask on can sometimes impair the vision of the child wearing it. With face paint, it is easier for your child to see where they are going and they won’t have to lift their mask to have a conversation with a fellow trick or treater. If your child absolutely must wear a Halloween mask, make sure it’s a snug fit, is ventilated and has large enough eyeholes so they can see all around them. 3. Be Visible If your kids will comply, choose costumes that are brightly colored so that they are easier to see in the dark. If they really want a dark costume, apply some reflective strips to their costume. You could also have them wear glow necklaces or carry glow sticks and flashlights. 4. Never Go Alone It is important that your children have an adult chaperon at all times while trick or treating. You should also discreetly add some emergency identification information such as the child’s name, Continued on page 6

address & phone number to their costume or on a bracelet in case your child happens to get separated from the group. 5. Walking Tips Be sure that your children understand simple traffic rules, such as stopping and looking both ways before crossing the street, and staying in a crosswalk if one is available. If you have to cross at a light, make sure you have the proper “walk” signal before you proceed. Inform your children that they should never assume that they have the right away when crossing the street, especially at night on Halloween. 6. Knock On Doors That You Know Encourage your children to only trick-or-treat at homes where they know the inhabitants. If they know everyone on the street, except for one house, they could ask the neighbors about that one house. If a home is dark or has no Halloween decorations, that is typically a good sign that they are not up for trick-or-treaters. 7. Don’t Go Inside Trick-or-treaters always seem to run across a house or two where someone invites them to “come

in”. Remind your little ones that they should never go inside anybody’s home while trick-or-treating. They can easily get the candy they seek from the porch or if the homeowner is persistent, inform them to simply turn and walk away. 8. Stay On Track It might be tempting to take a short cut through an alley or cut through someone’s yard, but that can sometimes pose a danger. Stay on streets and in neighborhoods that are well lit and where there are plenty of people around. 9. Say No! If you’re children are old enough to trick or treat in a group without you, be sure and designate a time for their return. Teach your children that if a stranger offers to give them a ride or take them to a Halloween Party, they should say “no”. Stranger danger is important to remember no matter how old your kids are, even while trick-or-treating. 10. Taste-Testing Patience Make sure your little goblins know that trick or treating is for gathering candy, not eating it as they receive it.You know they’re going to be tempted to take a taste before you’ve had a chance to inspect it, so pack a goody bag with some of your own Halloween candy so they have something to snack on if they just can’t wait until they get home.

Fer was dreht en Sunneblumm immer geege Mariye? -Florence Baver October 11, 1962 I am always begging for something. I think you are already tired of that. But as long as I receive such nice letters and am gifted such lovely items,
one cannot stop such a thing. A few weeks back we asked for ‘Jewish’ cherries (Chew cherries or ground cherries). Well, we received a bagful from Mrs. Stocker from Nazareth. Her son, Ralph, teaches school where Russel also does and one day Ralph came to school with a bag full of ground cherries for us. We want to thank them many times over for those. Many of the older people held the belief that one should not express a thanks for something when we get it from somebody [for the purpose of] planting it. I think some people still believe that nowadays. This will give us a good start in our garden that we want to start at our summer home next summer. Ground cherries will certainly be planted next summer. We have been looking for seeds for many years. This is the time of the year to cut off the sunflowers and dry them. We don’t want to ask for sunflower seeds, since we already have them on hand for next year. What we would like to find out is for what did people use them. Where they just planted for nice or were they used for something more than feeding the birds in winder? Did the older people use them to make some kind of tea for a illness? And we would also like to find out how you dry the sunflowers. We have already seen two places where many flowers were drying. Next to our summer Continued on page 10

home the people had the entire wash line hanging full one day when we went by. We did not have time to stop and take a picture, and doggone it, when we went by again the sunflowers had already been put away. On last Sunday as we were driving around the countryside a little, we came upon a place where they had the sunflowers stuck between the slats in the corn crib. The flowers were inside the crib and the stalks of the plants were standing out around the corn crib. Here we did not, however, waste any time to take a colored picture of it. We hope the picture will be good. The women said she would dry them that way. Now they eat the seed or though the seeds just like peanuts. One must take off the outer peel or skin exactly just like he also removes the brown skin from the peanut to eat it. I tried it and they are not too bad. Please let us know of your experience with sunflowers. We want to write a large article one day about these flowers and also gather together many pictures of them. Why does a sunflower always turn toward the East at morning? [Ground cherries (Physalis philadelphica): Physalis is a genus of flowering plants in the nightshade family, which grow in warm temperate and subtropical regions of the world. A notable feature is the formation of a large papery husk derived from the calyx, which partly or fully encloses the fruit. The fruit is small and orange, similar in
size, shape and structure to a small tomato. At least 46 species are endemic to the country of Mexico. – Wikipedia. Florence had asked her readers earlier for ground cherries stating she wanted to use the seeds to grow some in her own garden and also to freeze some to make pies next summer for the Kutztown Folk Festival. She also called them Duddekasche, ‘paper bag’ cherries because the fruit grows in that small ‘paper’ shell. She did not know the origin of or reason for the term,Yuddekasche, ‘Jewish’ cherries.] [Sunflowers (genus Helianthus): What is interesting about her remarks is that sunflower seeds were apparently not commonly thought of as a food item then; when she tried some for that first time, she noted that they tasted okay. Some medicinal use claims: Sunflower leaf tea has been used to treat high fevers, and for lung ailments. Just a few tablespoons of sunflower leaf tea will stop diarrhea—so it is best to use it sparingly. The leaves have both diuretic and expectorant properties. And finally, if you want to know why the plant faces east, ask Mr. Google to find: “The Mystery Of Why Sunflowers Turn To Follow The Sun — Solved.”

Halloween Facts
Source: http://www.theholidayspot.com/halloween/facts.htm
READ ON FOR SOME AMAZING FACTS AND TRIVIA ABOUT HALLOWEEN. THEY ARE BIZARRE, FUNNY, WEIRD AND HISTORICAL FACTS THAT WILL GIVE YOU A GREATER INSIGHT INTO HALLOWEEN AS A FESTIVAL. • Trick or treating comes from the Middle-Age practice of the poor dressing up in costumes and going around door to door during Hallowmas begging for food or money in exchange for prayers. The food given was often a Soul Cake, which was a small round cake which represented a soul being freed from Purgatory when the cake was eaten.
• Halloween also is recognized as the 3rd biggest party day after New Year's and Super Bowl Sunday. • Halloween is Oct. 31 – the last day of the Celtic calendar. It actually was a pagan holiday honoring the dead. • Trick-or-treating evolved from the ancient Celtic tradition of putting out treats and food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year. • Halloween is correctly spelt as Hallowe'en.
• Halloween is also know by other names: All Hallows Eve Samhain All Hallowtide The Feast of the Dead The Day of the Dead
• If you see a spider on this night, it could be the spirit of a dead loved one who is watching you
• The owl is a popular Halloween image. In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches, and to hear an owl's call meant someone was about to die.
• Halloween was brought to North America by immigrants from Europe who would celebrate the harvest around a bonfire, share ghost stories, sing, dance and tell fortunes. • Orange and black are Halloween colors because orange is associated with the Fall harvest and black is associated with darkness and death. • There are no words in the dictionary that rhyme with orange, the color of pumpkin. • According to folklore, the jack-o-lantern got his name from a man named Jack. • Turnips and beets served as the original jacko-lanterns. • Jack o lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain holiday.

Doris Smith Remembered The Slatington Library honored one of its strongest supporters, Doris Smith, at its October board meeting. Doris was a long time board member and treasurer of the Slatington Public Library as well as a beloved math teacher at Slatington High School/Northern Lehigh High School. She passed away in April, and in lieu of flowers, donations were made to the Slatington Public Library. Over two thousand dollars was given to the library in Doris’s memory. The following inscription was placed on the library’s memorial plaque: “Doris Smith, a friend and dedicated worker.” Doris’s husband Nick, daughter Jane Meckes and sister Karen Schneck as well as friends and neighbors were present for the unveiling of the plaque. Hali Kuntz, one of the current board members and retired math teacher, gave an emotional tribute to her teacher, mentor and friend.

Walk Safely 1. Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. 2. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.

no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings. 6. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars. Trick or Treat With an Adult 1. Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups. Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe 1. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. 2. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. 3. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
4. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. Drive Extra Safely on Halloween 1. Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways. 2. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs. 3. Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully. 4. Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. 5. Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances. 6. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.
