Slatington Volunteer Fire Department: submitted by JULIE HAYDT
The Slatington Volunteer Fire Department and the Teamster Horseman Motorcycle Association 53 North present the 4th annual Bike Night and Car Show on Saturday, September 24, from 12 to 8 p.m. for a great event. Slatington Bike Night and Car Show was started in 2013 after the death of Milton J. "Bup" Greene in July of 2012. He was a member of the fire department for over 30 years. He even served as treasurer for many years and took vacation from his job every year to help at the carnival every night. At one point, he also served on the Slatington Borough Council. He was very active in his community and helped others any time that he could. He was a member of the Hose Co. #1, which cares for the statue and bell on Main Street, Slatington. A portion of the proceeds are contributed to this committee to continue restoration projects on the statue. This is an agreement set forth by the fire department. Bup was also a part of the Teamster Horsemen Motorcycle Association 53 North, where Brian Taylor serves as president. The members of that organization help in the planning and staffing of the event. They, along with the fire department staff, Dean Hefflefinger (President), have been
extremely dedicated in organizing and contributing to this event. Bup is missed tremendously by his family and friends, but his memory will live on through this event. This year we are doing a gun raffle, tickets are $20 each. Contact the fire company, Facebook page, or any committee members for tickets. Food vendors include: Parryville Fire Cofunnel cakes, Jackie's French Fries, Strut Cateringtacos, Lavender Express Catering-gyros, Dave Stroup-specialty hot dogs, Rinker's, Brogran's, & Mama's. Merchandise vendors include: Porcupine Piercing/Tattoo Factory, Be Their Voice, Jay's Shades, Barbie's Biker Bandanas, Express Games, Stitchin' Witch, Pocono Mountain Leather, Phone Kings, F5 Variety Store, Flesh Effects, Biker Yard Sale, Chrome Queens, Bee Silky Soap, Shadow Drawing, Sand Art, & Dawn's Place. More may follow. There are drink specials, t-shirt sales, and fun for the whole family. The car show is from 12-4 p.m. and the Chinese Auction is from 12-6 p.m.. Again, the event will rock on from 12-8 p.m. thanks to The Fyre and Ice Show (Tracie Lovett and Amy Danner) and their dedication to our event. The live bands, playing all day, will be CA/CD, Eighteenth Hour, Wicked Beaver, Avylon, Revel 9.

Formal Groundbreaking/Construction Set To Begin On Slatington Veterans Memorial submitted by ROBERT STETTNER
After an overwhelming response from the businesses, citizens, and organizations in the Northern Lehigh area in the form of donations and sponsored bricks, construction is set to begin on the Slatington Veterans Memorial in September. To date over 500 bricks have been purchased in memory and recognition of area veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. This number will be enough to fill the two raised brick beds which will bookend the main memorial. The

The society's annual mum sale is right around the corner! Purchase your mum plants from the historical society on Saturday, September 24, from 9 to 1 p.m. There will be lots of beautiful mums in many colors to choose. Prices are reasonable for these hardy plants. Come early for the best selections. Also, pick up some goodies at the bake sale. There will be a wide variety of baked goods available. We will have hot dogs on the grill in case you want lunch. Head to Route 248, Pennsville, on the 24th and check out the society's sale. Mums not sold on Saturday will be offered again during the LTHS Open House from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 25. Please note this is the LAST Open House of the season. If you have not visited the historical centre so far this year, you will want to step inside and see all of the memorabilia collected over the years. There were some recent acquisitions, among them is a wooden wheelchair in excellent condition, you will surely want to see it! Looking ahead, the society will participate in the Dream Come True event in Berlinsville on Sunday, October 2. Stop by and chat with the members at
their booth and take a chance on a container filled with household items. We will have special literature for you to take along. Be sure to pick up a form regarding the upcoming 15th Anniversary Celebration in November. The next opportunity to visit the museum will be Sunday, December 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. for the Holiday Open House. You will be able to check out the bargains from our "store." Following the December Open House, the museum will be closed until next spring except for special appointments. Call 610-440-0151 for more information.

Recipe from rachelschultz.com
Slow Cooker Chicken Caesar Sandwiches
COOKING WITH CATHERINE INGREDIENTS • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • ½ C. Caesar dressing • ½ C. Parmesan, shredded • 1 Tbsp. parsley • 2 tsp. pepper • Romaine leaves • Hamburger buns DIRECTIONS Arrange chicken breasts in slow cooker. Add ½ C. water and cook on low for 3-4 hours. Remove chicken from slow cooker and shred, drain water. Return chicken to slow cooker and stir in Caesar dressing, Parmesan, parsley, and pepper. Cook on low for 30 minutes. Remove and serve on buns with romaine lettuce.
This recipe is as tasty as it is quick. I made a few revisions though. I chose pitas instead of hamburger buns and I added tomatoes to the sandwich and it was awesome. Instead of water in the crock-pot, I used chicken broth. The recipe made a lot of sandwiches, so I think this would be perfect for a picnic of if you’re serving a lot of people. With just the two of us, the recipe provided quite a few lunches and dinners. Despite how good it was, I was wishing it was chicken salad instead of chicken Caesarmaybe next time.

A woman and her husband interrupted their vacation to go to the dentist. "I want a tooth pulled, and I don't want Novacaine because I'm in a big hurry," the woman said. "Just extract the tooth as quickly as possible, and we'll be on our way." The dentist was quite impressed. "You're certainly a courageous woman," he said. "Which tooth is it?" The woman turned to her husband and said, "Show him your tooth, dear.”

Growing Vegetables Into Fall And Winter by AMY GRISAK
As more people strive to eat locally and seasonally, home gardeners are becoming more aware of how to take advantage of the seemingly forgotten gardening seasons of fall and winter. By knowing what to plant, when to plant, and how to care for the crops, you may not have to rely on out-of-state produce. Fewer Bugs and Weeds There are benefits to planting late in the season not realized earlier in the year. “In the early fall you see a decline in the pest culprits that cause frustration for many gardeners,” says Noah Wentworth of Finklepod Farm in Arundel, Maine.“You don’t deal with nearly the same pest pressure.” Although all pests aren’t eliminated, the life cycle of many of them are at a point where there isn’t the larvae, or at least as much, to feed on plants. Another perk is the weed situation. There will be perennial weeds for some time into the fall, but they don’t grow at the same rate. In the spring, it seems that as soon as you weed, there are more growing, a never-ending chore. But in the fall, it’s much easier to stay on top of them. What to Grow Tomatoes, squash, and peppers are not good choices for the cooler gardening
season. Vegetables that you plant in the early spring will work. Most greens are hardy as well as some cabbage varieties, and root vegetables are always good options. When to Grow If you want to have fresh vegetables in the fall and the winter, you need to plant while the weather is still warm. A common mistake is pulling out the summer vegetables after a freeze, and then seeding the carrots, greens, and other cool season crops. While some vegetables might produce before the extreme cold settles in, more likely than not, you’ll be disappointed. To make sure the plants grow enough to keep you supplied with fresh vegetables, you need to time the planting dates to give the plants plenty of time to reach a harvestable size. To determine the right date, know how long it takes the plant to mature, and then count backwards from your traditional first frost date. For example, spinach typically takes 28 days from germination to be large enough to eat. If your first frost date is October 15, you’ll want to plant the spinach seeds around the first week of September to give it enough time to grow. Because many of us still experience temperatures

in the 80s and 90s even in September, the soil is often warmer than desired. This can make germination a challenge since many of these traditionally cool season varieties don’t germinate well in warm soil. In order to create better conditions, utilize the shade of taller plants, or cover a bed with straw for at least a week prior to planting. While most cold season crops can be seeded, some are more successful if you set them out as transplants. With the increasing popularity of growing vegetables longer into the fall, there are more hardy seedlings such as broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower available at local nurseries and by mail. Since they take longer to produce than greens or root vegetables, set them out as seedlings. This way you should be able to harvest the cabbage and cauliflower up to the extreme cold, and continue cutting broccoli until it tastes bitter. Daylight Another important consideration for fall and winter gardening is optimizing the available light. It’s a balance to be able to protect the plants from severe cold while allowing as much light as possible to reach them and encourage growth. Even if the temperature is well below freezing, Wentworth says they’ll pull off the row covers during the day so the plants can soak up the sunshine. Watering during the cooler months can be a

challenge in below freezing temperatures, but depending on your location, you’ll need to do it on a regular basis. You’ll have to water more frequently in drier parts of the country that receive more sunshine, and possibly less in regions where cloud cover keeps the moisture from evaporating as much. With a little planning and a few relatively inexpensive season-extending techniques, we’re no longer tied down to just two seasons. So make your plans for a late season garden, and feel good about adding fresh spinach to the menu in midJanuary. are plenty of delicious options for a late season garden. Give these a try to liven up your wintertime produce list. Spinach – You can plant spinach 6 to 10 weeks before the freeze. It’ll continue growing during the winter, and you’ll be surprised at the resurgence in the spring. Kale – With a little protection, you can harvest kale throughout the winter. Start by seed 10 to 12 weeks before your typical first frost date, or set out plants a month prior. You want decent sized plants going into the winter.

Chard – Chard is a good replacement when you pull out the spring crops by mid-summer. Seed it then, and continue harvesting throughout the winter. Beets – Beets germinate fairly quickly, but you want to give them plenty of time to mature before the cold weather sets in for good. Seed at least 7 to 8 weeks prior to your first frost. Carrots – Carrots take longer than you might think. Seed them 12 weeks prior to a frost. When wintering over, cut off the green tops and insulate them to keep them sweet and crisp. Cabbage – Seed cabbage at least 12 weeks prior to the cold weather, and plant transplants 6 weeks before.

So hen mer aa, fer Deiwels-schtreech, Die Bendel als vergnippt; Sie hot uns alsemol verwischt, No hen mer’s awwer grickt. Doch waar die Mudder gut zu uns, Hot gsarrigt frieh un schpot; Un hen mer uns eemol verfehlt, Sie gebt uns guder Rot. Wie ball waar‘n all die Kinner gross, Un’s Midderche watt alt; Vum Druwwel waar sie net verschont, Die Welt iss hatt un kalt. „Die gleene Kinner,“ saagt sie als, „Die drede uff der Schatz; Doch wann sie no mol greeser sin‘ Dann drede sie uff’s Hatz.“ Die Draene falle uff der Schooss, So gans allee im Schtille; En leiser Seifzer heert mer kaum, „Ya, well! ’S iss Gottes Wille!“

Touch of Dutch Continued from page 37
It was Mother’s apron, which she often wore; Yes, if it could tell us things, What it would all say. This takes me far, so far back To [my] childhood; There in the apron I have already rested, [When] I was just a new born. There I slept at my mother’s breast, And that indeed nothing wakes me, No wind moves around my tender little head, She covered me up. Then she led me on that apron Step by step through life; So when I could walk a little, Then I needed to hold on to it. And Oh my! How I was always afraid, [When] strange people were in the house; I hide myself behind that apron And look out from behind it.

[If] one of us cried a little, [When] an accident happened to us, Then Mother would come with the apron And dry the tears for us. And later when we were bigger, We boys and the girls [also], Then we just carried out tricks, Just like it often goes. We sneak up quietly from behind, Apron strings [are] untied, And next when the apron falls down, Then we always laughed. Then we also, for a devilish trick, Used to knot the strings; Sometimes she caught hold of us, Then we definitely got “it”. Still Mother was good to us, Cared for us from morning till night; And [when] we made mistakes sometimes, She gave us good advice. When the children were all grown, And [my] dear Mother became old; She was not spared from trouble,

The world is difficult and cold. “The little children,” she always said, “They step on the apron; Yet when they are bigger, Then they tread on the heart.” The tears fall on the lap, So completely alone in silence; One [can] hardly hears a soft sigh, “Yes, well! It is God’s will!” Mother now rests in a cool grave, And yet here is her apron – I closed the drawer, My heart is hurting so much. [Birmelin does use some High German words and phrases, but I think you can still follow it.] [Also, a note included with this poem in The Pennsylvania German Folklore Society,Volume Sixteen, states that it was written upon request for the third ‘Pennsylvaanisch Deitsch Versammling vun Baerricks Kaunti,’ held on April 14th, 1939. This past March that group held their 77th Versammling in the Auction House at Leesport. At its peak about 1,000 people were packed into the dining hall. Today about 500 ‘Deitsche Leit’ still come out to enjoy that event.]

Celtic Adventure At Northampton Farmers’ Market by CATHERINE STROH
The unique sound of bagpipes were heard in the Northampton Borough at the weekly Northampton Farmers Market on Sept. 6. Local band Celtic Adventure, specializing in traditional Irish and Scottish folk music, was welcomed to the market. Celtic Adventure has been rocking the area since 1997. Although the band has seen many transitions and shifts in members, its current members are cousins Gene Kutzler, bagpipe player for 25 years, and Al Wallitsch. You’ll most likely find the pair
playing their music at local nursing homes. Their focus is not about making money, rather sharing their passion of folk music. If you missed Celtic Adventure on Sept. 6, they’ll be back at the market on Tuesday, September 20 and will play at Kilts in the Park, a free concert held in the Northampton Borough Park on October 2.

New to the market was a working antique trucka beautiful 1946 Chevy, owned by enthusiast Charlie Recker, pictured above, of Northampton. Charlie tries to drive the truck every day and enjoys it as much as he can, driving the Chevy around is something he and his wife enjoy together. Although nothing is official yet, Northampton Borough Planner Victor Rodite of the Northampton Farmers Market is trying to get antique trucks and cars to the market every week, a nice addition to the local vendors, and something unique for patrons to enjoy. All antique vehicle owners are encouraged to bring their vehicles; in turn they’ll receive two free raffle tickets. The market is open every Tuesday from 3 until 6:30 p.m. and is located on Main Street in Northampton in the new Uptown Park, by the Roxy Theater. The last day of the 2016 season is September 27.
