From The Editor’s Desk. I’m an only child, so when I was younger people would occasionally ask me if I wished that I had siblings. Being generally content with my situation, the answer was usually no. I had plenty of friends my age in my neighborhood and having to find ways to entertain myself led me to an early interest in reading, starting with Great Illustrated Classics. I’m still a voracious reader to this day. It probably helped shape my career and my decision to go to school for journalism and pursue writing. I did always have my adopted canine brother to keep me company, a golden retriever mix named Cody. I was 12 when we picked him up from a family near Beltzville. He was an adorable little fur ball running and playing with his mother in the yard. We knew we were taking him home the moment we saw him. Besides peeing on the carpet occasionally and eating every pair of socks I owned he was well behaved and had the sweetest disposition of any dog I’ve ever met. He turned me into a life-long dog person. Cody traveled with us; he loved camping and came on many excursions to Gettysburg, the beach and

lots of other places. He stood guard next to my bed whenever I was sick and was always a comforting presence when I was down. He was there through so many pivotal events in my life. He was always the first to greet me at the door, excitedly wagging his tail, whenever I came home after moving away to college. Like most dog owners say, he was a part of the family with a distinct personality and bottomless, unconditional love and loyalty. Cody has been gone for over two years now and I still miss seeing him peeking out of the front windows of my parent’s house when I drive up in my car and him lying on the floor next to the couch while I watched TV. While losing my buddy was painful, owning a dog is more than worth it. They pay you back tenfold in loyalty and companionship. All they ask for in return is food, water, the occasional pat on the head and a walk. If you are thinking of becoming a pet-owner, which of course I strongly recommend, please consider visiting one of our local animal shelters. Adopting one of the many abandoned dogs or cats instead of purchasing one from a pet store will save a life. Why buy an animal from the mall when so many pets are in need of a good home?

The Truth About Cats And Dogs It’s a myth that you can’t teach an adult dog new tricks. An adult dog can learn to shake hands, speak and roll over if you keep training sessions short and fun and use positive reinforcement, including praise and treats. When it comes to dogs and cats, myths abound, but you can be wise to their ways if you follow a few facts. “The problem with myths is that pet owners who act on misinformation may not best meet the needs of their dog or cat,” said American Kennel Club® (AKC) Meet the Breeds® Spokesperson Gina DiNardo. To separate fact from fiction, the AKC and The International Cat Association set the record straight on some of the most well-known myths: Cats need milk—False. While cats like the taste, their bodies don’t have much lactase and milk can give adult cats diarrhea. Dogs are sick when their noses are warm— False. It’s an old wives tale that cold, wet noses indicate health. The only way to tell your dog’s temperature is to take it with a thermometer.
Cats smell with their mouths—True. Cats have a small scent gland called the vomeronasal organ on the roof of their mouth. To get a really good whiff of something, they’ll open their mouths very wide so the odor hits the gland. A dog’s wagging tail means he’s happy—False. While a natural, mid-level wagging tail indicates happiness, most other wags mean the opposite. A high, stiff wagging tail means the dog is agitated and ready to protect something and a low, quick wag means the dog is scared and submissive. A cat purrs when he’s happy—False. A cat does purr when content but will also purr when in pain.

Joke Corner
A man goes into a bar with his dog. He goes up to the bar and asks for a drink. The bartender says "You can't bring that dog in here!" The guy, without missing a beat, says "This is my seeing-eye dog". "Oh man... the bartender says, "I'm sorry, here, the first one's on me." The man takes his drink and goes to a table near the door. Another guy walks into the bar with a Chihuahua. The first guy sees him, stops him and says "You can't bring that dog in here unless you tell him it's a seeing-eye dog". The second man graciously thanks the first man and continues to the bar. He asks for a drink. The bartender says "Hey, you can't bring that dog in here!". The second man replies "This is my seeing-eye dog". The bartender says, "No, I don't think so. They do not have Chihuahuas as seeing-eye dogs". The man pauses for a half-second and replies "What??! They gave me a Chihuahua??!

Spread The Good Word Mission Team from St. Peter’s Church, Emerald
BLUE MOUNTAIN TOWN & COUNTRY GAZETTE | September 15, 2011
Mission Team Returns St. Peter’s Church located at 7860 Center St. in Emerald welcomed the Mission team of 11 people home on Sunday, July 17th. The team went to Pulaski Virginia to help the victims of a tornado that hit the area in April. As no financial aid was received much help was needed. The team worked two and one half days cleaning debris and cleaning brush to help protect the area in
the event of a fire. The last two days were spent demolishing a house to that the family would start rebuilding on the site. The team would like to say Thank-you to all those who prayed for a safe week and also to everyone who supporter them through helping at or attending fundraisers held by the church. We are already planning for the trip next year and working on raising the money to send who ever may be on the team to where ever God want us to go.

What are you curled up with? Paws to Protect Dogs Author: Sharon Saxson Dogs have never been so widely used to protect human society as they are today. They track live people and uncover dead bodies. At border crossings and airports, they sniff for drugs, bombs, and contraband. They act as scouts, trackers, messengers, booby trap locators, tunnelers, water patrol, lifeguards, search and rescue, and explosive detectors. The President of the United States does not go anywhere until the Secret Service has had dogs probe the area. These dogs are tireless and faithful workers. They ask little in return. And with this brief introduction by author Sharon Saxson, the reader is hooked. Most of us are familiar with canine bravery stories especially from the burning twin towers on 9/11, but how many of us know the story of Blackie, the “toughest dog in Da Nang”? In 1965 after an attack on a U.S. military base in Da Nang (a
port city in Vietnam), the American military conducted an experiment and sent canine teams to determine their usefulness. The program was a great success to such a point that the bounty put on war dogs by the Vietnamese was twice the amount for killing an American soldier. Blackie was a large German shepherd working as a team with Sergeant Dunlap. Blackie saved his handler’s life many times, and Sgt. Dunlap had to leave him behind. Years later Dunlap was able to describe the unique bond he and his canine partner had, and Sharon Saxson shares their story in “Paws to Protect.” Or Smokie, the “Yorkie in the jungle.” When Officer Bill Wynne first saw the little dog tied to the wheel of a truck in the motor pool garage for the Navy (in the South Pacific), he thought he wasn’t sure what kind of dog she was. But he Continued on Page 28

Paws to Protect Dogs Continued from Page 27 offered two Australian pounds for the pitiful dog, afraid that she wouldn’t live much longer. But live and thrive, Smokie did and she became the mascot for the Twenty-Sixth Photo Recon with the Navy. After the war ended, Smokie and Billy returned to civilian life in the states. Smokie and Bill had their own television show, “Castles in the Air,” on Sunday mornings. Although Smokie is long gone, there is a bronze life-size sculpture of Smokie sitting in Bill’s helmet in the Cleveland Metroparks Rocky River reservation. Blackie and Smokie’s stories are just two of the many little-known stories in this book of heroic dog tales, demonstrating once again the unyielding bond between man and man’s best friend. THANK YOU Lehigh Twp. Fire Co. Heroes Countless hours of preparation went into the 20th annual LT Country Fair only to have the second day of the fair washed out by Hurricane Irene. This was an obvious disappointment to fair goers and workers alike The fair has two important functions: to provide a great family fun-filled event for the community and also to raise funds to update their equipment and better serve the region. Early on the second day, for safety reasons, the workers shut down the outside activities and it became obvious that this would not be a profitable year. Did this deflate the members of the fire company? No! Instead they put on their gear and made nearly 100 responses to the needs of the community; such as pumping cellars, cutting trees, directing traffic, fighting fires and various rescues. Many of those responders had needs at their homes, but the community came first. Let’s join together as a community and say THANK YOU in a tangible way by sending a generous, much-needed, tax-deductible donation to the LTFC No.1 at 4188 Lehigh Drive, Cherryville, PA 18035. Written by Ken Everett, who has resided in Lehigh Twp. for 44 years.

Nails, Nails, Nails! A lot of women that I know like to get their nails manicured. They like the way a fresh shaping and polish looks, they like longer nails, or stronger nails. Recently there have been new products that not everyone is aware of and I think it’s time to get acquainted with our new friends that can make our fingers look that much better! The first question ladies ask themselves is enhancements or no enhancements?!?! Well what is an “enhancement”? An enhancement is when you apply an extending tip to your nail bed to enhance the length of their nails. After the enhancing tip is applied acrylic or gel overlays are applied to strengthen the enhancement. Polish is then applied. With Acrylics and Gels you need to have them filled approximately every two weeks. They are strong and lasting but many health care workers are not allowed to wear

enhancements. There is a second option for those who would like a little something extra, HATE chipping polish and enjoy having their nails manicured but don’t want to wear enhancements or are not allowed. It is a gel based polish that is applied to natural nails and will strengthen them. The products are called Harmony Gelish or CND Shellac. They are applied and cured by a UV light to natural nails, strengthening them and ensuring that the product is dry, scratch proof and will last for at least 14 days. This is perfect for people who use their hands heavily, work in the health care profession or just HATE chipping polish. The process also does no damage to your nail bed as some people are worried about that with enhancements. You can actually run a car key on your polish and it won’t scratch! I promise! Stop by the salon if you don’t believe me, I’ll show you! Laura Stauffer is the owner of Aloha Salon and Spa in Walnutport bringing 5 years make up styling and 4 years salon experience to our readers. You can contact her by emailing laura@alohatanning.net or visiting her website at www.alohatanning.net.

Fun For All The Family at Bath Community Day Connecting Business with Community is the focus of this year’s Bath Community Day, which takes place Saturday October 1, from 11am to 5:00pm at Ciff Cowling Field, Allen St, Bath (just off Route 512). Sponsored by The Bath Business & Community Partnership, Community Day has been put together for the young folks, as well as the ‘young at heart!’ Children’s events, live music, food and fun are scheduled for the day. There’s an art show and a pet parade scheduled for the day, with plenty of crafters and business vendors scheduled to be on hand. For food lovers, there will be plenty to choose from - barbeque and hot dogs, peach cobbler and more. For those who would rather just kick back and relax, bring a chair (don’t forget a blanket) and stay a while to enjoy the live bands and entertainment. SWIM, Christian rock, kicks off the music, followed by Sing for America, and the rock band, Band From The Ranch wrapping up the day. Besides crafters and vendors, local businesses, charities and non-profit organizations are also taking part. This years event will also include a motorcycle bike run sponsored by the Bath
Manoquesy Lodge 415. The ride will begin at 11 a.m. and should wrap up around 3 p.m. Drivers are $25 and riders are $10. Anyone interested in participating can register online at www. bathborough.org or the day of the run. “This is the day Bath community comes together, so we encourage you to walk around and get to meet everyone who is taking part,” said committee member Carol Bear-Heckman of Steckel House Bed and Breakfast. The event has been organized by The Bath Business and Community Partnership, (formerly the Bath Borough Business Revitalization Program) and the Borough of Bath. “One of the goals of the Bath Business and Community Partnership is to promote Bath town center as a family-friendly community and a ‘downtown’ for people living in Bath as well as the surrounding communities,” commented Fiona Adamsky, Community Day committee member. Sponsorships are still available for this great event, as well as vendor spaces. Sophomore Gives Back to his Community
Summer vacation to most students means relaxation, vacations, late nights and swimming. But to Ryan Cerrone, the summer of 2011 was a time to work hard and contribute to society. Ryan is a 10th grader at Northwestern High School and this past summer he was involved in two different projects that benefitted great causes. The first project benefited the American Cancer Society and Dream Come True. Ryan and his father participated in the Pennsylvania Perimeter Ride Against Cancer. Along with his father, Tony Cerrone, Ryan spent countless hours and 1,300 miles riding bikes training for this ride. The PA Perimeter Ride is a 518 mile, 28,000 ft. of hill climbing, 6-day trek from Elkins, WV to Palmerton, PA. Even though this may sound daunting to many of us, Ryan never thought of quitting.

“I never had thoughts of quitting because I knew I was able to do it and anything short of completing it would not be acceptable,” he said. Ryan also says that his dad, who was on the trip with him, was his inspiration during the expedition. Ryan and Tony Cerrone, along with 72 other riders raised $185,000. Team Cerrone which had the youngest rider in the group, Ryan is 16, raised over $5,500. If you think this was an amazing thing for a teenager to be doing during his break from his studies, you will be astonished by what he does next. While Ryan and his father were busy training for the bike ride, they were having meetings with the Hankee family regarding Ryan’s high school senior project. The second trick Ryan had up his sleeve was to make and sell his great white bean chicken chili, corn bread and birch beer at a Night in the Country held at Northwestern High School on August 20th. All proceeds benefited the Krysta Hankee Memorial “We got the idea from a volleyball tournament where we served it. It was a hit so we decided to test it out at Night in the Country,” he said. Ryan earned $220 at the event and donated every penny Continued on Page 35
ATTORNEYS COMPLETE ADVANCED COURSE IN ELDER LAW PLANNING
Attorneys Charles W. Stopp and Keith W. Strohl attended the Pennsylvania Bar Institute Annual Elder Law Conference in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The Conference presented a wealth of information to assist the elderly in preserving assets and dealing with care, including long-term skilled care issues. The Conference is presented annually by the Pennsylvania Bar Institute which is the educational arm of the Pennsylvania Bar Association. Each year attorneys and/ or staff from Steckel and Stopp participate in the educational seminar to keep up with recent changes in Elder Law Issues. Charles W. Stopp is a partner of the Law Firm of Steckel & Stopp and Attorney Keith W. Strohl is an associate of the Firm. The Firm has offices at Main Street and Walnut Street, Slatington; Schnecksville and Northampton and has been serving the needs of the Lehigh Valley area for over sixty years with a concentration in the areas of estate planning, elder law and estate administration.

Sophomore Continued from Page 34 of it to the Memorial Fund. The Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund is a charity started in 2003 in memory of Krysta Hankee by her parents. Krysta was Ryan’s second cousin. The fund gives out scholarships to high school seniors who exhibit scholarship, friendship, leadership and service. The Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund

holds a yearly golf tournament and also sells raffle tickets at many local events. To learn more about this great cause, head on over to www. krystahankeememorialfund.org. I had a chance to talk to Bill Hankee about Ryan’s generosity, “We are thankful for what Ryan has done.... He oversaw almost everything having to do with his stand…He did a lot of preparation for this. Even though he probably completed his senior project this past summer, Ryan has already decided to sell his chili next year to benefit the fund and we think it is wonderful.” Everyone at the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund is very happy and delighted that Ryan did this to help them. Ryan Cerrone did a lot of thinking and planning for this summer and it paid dividends. The best part is that Ryan didn’t keep those dividends. They were donated to great causes. Ryan is a caring, unselfish young man and we should all applaud him for his efforts. Recipe Round-Up Homemade Dog Biscuits The best way to know what goes into your dog’s food is to make it yourself. Many pet owners are choosing to do this, and slowly integrating the change into their pets diet (to avoid upsetting the digestion) While making your pet his or her own special treat, remember to avoid bones, chocolate, avocados, mushrooms, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic. Try one of these easy dog food recipes and watch your pup smile. Ingredients 2 1/2 cups sifted whole wheat flour 1/2 cup dry milk powder 1 cube beef bouillon, crumbled 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup cooked ground pork 1 cup grated carrot 6 tablespoons shortening 1 egg 1/2 cup cold water
Nu-Finish Reglazing & Repair Our Tub Finishes Are 100% GUARANTEED FOR 6 YEARS!
We Professionally Refinish: Total Bathtubs • Sinks • Shower Bases Bathroom Fiberglass Enclosures • Ceramic Tile Remodeling Countertops • Wall Surrounds We Also Do Stone Fleck Finishes On These Surfaces & Even Dr ywall! We Can Repair All Damaged Tub Surfaces Including Cracked Fiberglass Floors
Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly oil two cookie sheets. In a medium bowl, stir together the whole wheat flour, milk powder, beef bouillon, and salt. Add the ground pork, carrot, shortening and egg; mix in to the flour mixture while gradually adding water to form a stiff ball of dough. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters, and reroll scraps until no dough is left. Place cookies 2 inches apart onto the prepared cookie sheets. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the bottoms of the cookies are browned. Allow cookies to set for a few minutes on the cookie sheet before removing to wire racks to cool completely.

ChimneySaver is a
WATER REPELLENT – not a water sealer. The difference could save you hundreds, or even thousands of dollars in repairs because sealers can actually damage masonry. Unlike waterproofing sealers that remain on the surface, ChimneySaver penetrates deep enough to protect masonry from destructive water penetration while maintaining the structure’s vapor permeability.

PRAYER Blessed Virgin. Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee, Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands. Say this prayer 3 times for 3 consecutive days. You must be publish it and it will be granted to you. It has never been known to fail. L.H. (9/15)
Simple Acts Can Save Homeless Pets’ Lives (NAPS)—The numbers alone are staggering. Each year in the U.S., 8 million pets end up in shelters, and of these, only half find new homes. Approximately 11,000 pets a day, or 4 million each year, are euthanized, even though most of them are adoptable. Despite these overwhelming statistics, ending pet homelessness is an achievable goal and everyone can be part of the solution. People Saving Pets, a new social movement created by PetSmart Charities, is dedicated to saving homeless pets and suggests four simple actions that anyone can take—today—to save lives. 1. Adopt: If you have the time and resources to care for a pet, choose to adopt instead of buying your pet from a breeder or pet store. Have your heart set on a particular breed? Nearly 25 percent of animals living in shelters are purebreds, and many rescue groups are dedicated to specific breeds. 2. Spay and Neuter: If you’re already planning to adopt or currently own a pet, have your pet spayed/neutered. It’s one of the best ways to reduce overcrowding in shelters and lower euthanasia
rates, yet 35 percent of the cats and dogs living in U.S. households have not had this simple and safe procedure. Cats and dogs can be spayed/neutered as early as 8 weeks old, and studies have shown that the procedure can provide significant health benefits and reduce behavioral problems. Furthermore, price doesn’t have to keep you from doing the right thing for your pet. Certain clinics will provide you with spay/neuter services at a reduced cost—sometimes even for free. To find one nearby, check out the People Saving Pets clinic locator tool at www.peoplesavingpets.org. 3. Volunteer: Can’t welcome a new pet into your family just yet? Volunteer at your local shelter! From providing playtime for pets to helping out at adoption events or becoming a foster pet parent, your time will make a huge difference in saving pets. 4. Donate: Shelters rely heavily on donations. A small gift can go a long way. If you can’t donate money, household items such as cleaning products, garbage bags and old blankets and towels are also welcome. For more info: www.peoplesavingpets.org.
