From The Editor’s Desk. December 7th, 1941, November 22nd, 1963, September 11th 2001 – all dates that will live in infamy, dates that changed the United States fundamentally, dates that we lost innocence, dates that tore America out of complacency. Ten years ago the September 11th terrorist attacks were, in my opinion, my generation’s defining moment. We grew up during the 90’s when Bill Clinton’s indiscretions were the biggest issue government faced; the Gulf War was a fading memory as were the Rodney King riots. We knew nothing of political violence until Islamist terrorists murdered nearly 3,000 people in New York City, Shanksville, Pennsylvania and Arlington, Virginia at the Pentagon. It’s burned into our collective memory, I remember exactly where I was when it happened. It was a beautiful fall morning in early September and I had just started my senior year of high school a few weeks prior. I walked into my 2nd period accounting class and my friend Nelson looked at me wide-eyed and pointed at the television they had turned on in the room. A smoking hole had been ripped into New York City skyline. The news anchors were still speculating it was some terrible accident but within a few minutes, after the surreal

moment when the second plane slammed into the other tower, we all knew that things would never be the same. There is no easy way to write about 9/11. There is hardly anything to be said that hasn’t been said over and over already. Patriotism, sacrifice, heroism are all themes that deservedly, every writer has touched upon. So, the only way for me to go was personal. Richard Drew, a photographer who was working for the Associated Press on 9/11 took an iconic picture of a man who decided to jump from over a hundred stories, accelerating at nearly 150 miles per hour towards a certain death rather than risk the raging inferno that every floor above the crash site had become. This photo, which ran only once and wasn’t seen by many, encompassed the enormity of the tragedy for me. The man who jumped and fell to the New York City Street so stoically, resigned to his fate, not fighting against gravity like so many other jumpers who tried to use tablecloths and coats as makeshift parachutes only to have them torn to shreds by the unstoppable force of the fall made me think about all of the people, with families, lives and stories that died that day. Sometimes an event is almost is too big to fully comprehend. I knew it was a tragedy, I know thousands of Americans died. But seeing that one man, who left his house that morning with no idea what would become of him; events beyond his control forced him to jump from the World Trade Center, made the weight of the situation crash down on me. I felt angry, sad, helpless and confused. But, more than anything I felt what I think is real patriotism, love for my country, my neighbor, my family, my friends without bias or prejudice without regard for ideology or political affiliation. I think in these divisive times, where liberal or conservative ideas are often a line in the sand, it’s important to remember the lessons of 9/11 – that no matter who we are, regardless of religious or political affiliation, we are all Americans.

Friedens United Church of Christ Memorial Garden Dedication
On Sunday, August 21st the Friedens United Church of Christ held a special outdoor service to dedicate their recently completed Memorial Garden. The Dedication Service conducted by Pastor Lunnett Hilliard included Task Force Chairman Paul Vaughan and Lori Merkel. Thoughtfully and tenderly Pastor Hilliard, dedicated this garden that was created for the benefit of members and friends past, present, and future. This garden will receive ashes and then carry them back to earth. It will serve as a symbol of harmony, love, and reconciliation. In the garden we shall find a place for reflection and peace. Church members were charged by the Pastor to care for the garden well, as it will surely care well for us. This Memorial Garden was established in 2011 as an alternative burial site for church members, their immediate family members and friends of the church as approved by church council. The idea for the garden was conceived with funds donated in the name of Lorraine Merkel by family and friends. Additional funds for this project were secured by members and friends of the church. Located just outside the sanctuary, this Memorial Garden is an integral part of the church’s ministry. It provides a beautiful, meaningful place where members and their families can inter loved ones near their church at a reasonable cost. This garden meets the growing trend of cremation and provides a dignified place to place their ashes. Continued on Page 6

Dedication Continued from Page 7 Memorial Garden Task Force members responsible for the planning and completion of this project were Paul Vaughan, Chairman, Lori Merkel, Pam Sauerwine, Karlene Laub, and David Altrichter. Josh Laub was recognized for his landscaping expertise and design and Robert Laub for his assistance in the garden’s completion. At the conclusion of the dedication service, each member in attendance was asked to place a special stone in the garden so that everyone would feel like they were a part of the garden. Each stone had an inspirational message etched on it such as Peace, Love, Hope, Wisdom, and Strength. This was a beautiful way to mark the conclusion of the project and to provide another way for us to celebrate God’s everlasting promise. By David & Janice Altrichter

Pippa - Pit Bull Terrier: An adoptable dog in Whitehall, Pippa is a beautiful, friendly young female blue pit bull terrier that ended up with us when her owner dumped her in Pippa one of our outdoor kennels. She was scared and shaking until one of our volunteers brought her some treats and then her tail started wagging and you could tell how happy she was. She is very sweet and loves people. She has been around dogs and loves to play with them, but in the house she can be a little guarded toward other dogs with bones and toys so we would say she would do best as the only dog in the house. She is a fantastic little girl who would make a great addition to any family. She has had some training recently and gone through and passed her canine good citizen test. If you are looking for a sweet dog, don't pass this girl up.

Food Ministry Donates Food Packages Angel Food Ministries (AFM), the nation’s largest nonprofit food ministry, will join in supporting national Hunger Action Month in September. Every month AFM donates more than 600 of its food packages free to those in need while also offering food packages at 30-50% off retail prices to anyone. AFM recently donated more than 11 tons of food to tornado victims in Joplin, MO. “Hunger continues to affect millions of Americans day in and day out. Nearly 15 percent (17.4 million) of U.S. households are food insecure and have difficulty providing enough food for all members of their family,” said Pastor Wes Wingo, AFM chief information officer and CEO of Ministry Development. “Children make up an important percentage of those who are food insecure and every month we donate at least 200 of our No Child Goes Without food packages. “During these challenging economic times, it is even more difficult for those in need to provide nutritious food to their families,” Pastor Wingo said. “Every month we donate gift cards for our Sponsor Armed Services Families program as well as hundreds of our Bread of Life Signature food boxes.” Founded in 1994, AFM serves hundreds of thousands of customers in 45 states through some 5,000 churches. Anyone can order AFM food packages and SNAP
(food stamp) participants can use their EBT cards to purchase food packages. There are no qualifications, income criteria or forms to fill out. Food packages can be ordered online, by phoning 1-888-819-3745 or through local churches. To locate your nearest host site and/or to order online, visit www.angelfoodministries.com and click on “Order Online.” Headquartered in Monroe GA, AFM offers a dozen standard food packages and a number of specialty packages at great discounts because it purchases food in bulk, does not have retail space and labor costs, does not advertise, uses less packaging, and benefits from the labor of some 40,000 volunteers at their partner churches. Each month AFM compares prices item by item at major retailers in the 45 states it serves. September 8, 1955 The day after Labor Day was a big day for the children. The first day of school is always a big event for all children and for the children who are going for the first time in their lives, even more so. I wonder how many children there are that experienced what I did 38 years ago. How many go to school the first day and can’t speak any English? The Amish children still have such an experience. I don’t remember too much from the first day in the little red schoolhouse, but I’ll try and paint a picture of my first day in Slatington High School for you. My dad came home one time from my grammy and said, “Grammy will take you from Mondays till Friday evenings, and you can take the train up to the high school and back. We want to send you to high school and to Kutztown Teacher’s College, if you want to go; but you are not allowed to date boys.” The first day came. Because I was afraid to go alone, my mother rode with me that day. By the time we arrived at Slatington, there were about 100 students on the train, but no one else had brought their mother. I wore my best Sunday hat; none of the other girls had anything on their heads. I had my lunch in the same lunch box that I carried to the little red school house; the other students had theirs in paper bags. The others carried their books in a bag, which was called a Boston Bag. Grammy gave me a something of a bag, but it was not like the other students’ bags. When I was climbing the stairs to the school, I was moving a bit too slow and a rude student behind me said,“You, in front of me, with your diaper bag, get out of the way.” And that was my first day in Slatington High School in 1925.
Happy Birthday!

Did You Know About .... ? Indians Of Eastern Pennsylvania The Delaware tribe of Indians most closely associated with Pennsylvania, called themselves Lenni Lenape. Their ancestors originally came from Asia many, many years before. The Indian is a well-naturalized American. Eleven thousand years ago, they lived a nomadic life, hunting with a stabbing spear, roasting their meat and wearing clothes made of animal skins. They hunted and fished to supply their family's needs. Eight thousand years ago, he was still a nomad, but within recognized family territories. Three thousand years ago in Pennsylvania, he was cultivating the ground. His diet was now based on a maize (corn) culture. The Indians were far advanced in raising cereals. Their corn was so highly domesticated that it could not seed itself but had to be planted anew each year. Their diet was supplemented with fish and fowl. They lived in longhouses (not teepees like western Indians). They were anywhere from thirty feet to one hundred feet in length. Several families lived together. The roofs had a smokehole over every fireplace. The hole had a bark covering so it could be shifted with a stick to keep out the rain. The men attended to the more strenuous and dangerous duties and kept busy clearing the land, hunting, fishing, and making canoes. He also made war clubs, bows, and arrows and went to war to defend his home. He left the management of

the house to his wife. She nursed the children, made pottery, tanned hides, dressed the game her husband shot, kept the fire burning, made the bread, provided the family with two good meals a day, and kept soup on the fire for visitors. She also tended the garden. The three staple foods were the three sisters: Corn, beans, and squash. They ate what we call pumpkin. A child was six to seven years old before being given a name. Marriages were usually arranged by the parents. Indians married early, the men often at seventeen or eighteen; the girls at thirteen or fourteen. Polygamy was not frowned upon, but was infrequent. Divorce was easy, depending merely upon the wish of one or both parties. Indians with beards were rare but not unknown. Hair grew sparsely on their face. They got rid of what little they had by taking a pair of mussel shells which had been sharpened on a stone and pulled the hair out by the roots. Long feathers were worn by the men in the hair for adornment. The Delawares wore only one or two. Women did not wear feathers at all in their hair. Painting the face was a universal custom. Every color had a special meaning: White was a symbol of peace; black meant evil, grief, and death. The men also used tattoos. Tobacco held a unique place in Indian life. It was very likely to have come into use as medicine.

Indians Continued from Page 14 Sex crimes were unknown; crimes of violence, rare. Theft was almost unheard of. The Delware Indians were fond of sports: footraces, lacrosse, shinny, wrestling, hopping, lifting or throwing stones, shooting or throwing arrows. They had a game of dice, which consisted of a number of flat stones or oval cherry stones painted black on one side and yellow on the other side. The Delaware Indians' greatest pleasure was in the dance. It provided their richest form of self-expression. Nearly every night, they gave themselves up to social dances. from Pennsylvania. Some bands moved north to the protection of the Iroquois. There is a large band of Delawares on the six nation reserve near Brantford, Ontario. The greater numer moved to Ohio during the mid 1800s. They also moved to Oklahoma. A few had stayed in Pennsylvania and became Christianized. During World War II, over two thousand of their original descendants belonged to the American and Canadian armies. This was a greater number than ever assembled during the days of their greatest national glory called the "Beaver Wars." New Signs for the Slatington Trailhead New reflective signs have been received to direct visitors to the recently upgraded Slatington Trailhead. The Trailhead sits at the hub of eight multi-use trails and connects to the national trail network via the Appalachian Trail. The signs, which will be placed at Slatington’s borders and at Main and Walnut, were funded by equal grants from the D&L Corridor Commission and Lehigh County’s Streetscape Amenities improvement grants. Les Glanz, Chairman of the Downtown
Revitalization Task Force of Future Focus, commented that “these signs will alert visitors and those who pass through the area that convenient access to the trail system is available where other services are close at hand. Trailhead users can buy gas, have a meal, or get a flat fixed.”

Palmerton Camera Club Meeting for September
The Palmerton Camera Club will start their year with a presentation from Mark Friedman who will share some of his photographs and explain the cibachrome process that he uses to get outstanding images. Mark began his career in photography while serving as an Army dentist in the Far East. He uses Canon equipment, and yes, he shoots film. Much effort is expended in his attempt to produce luminous prints with the greatest degree of clarity, brilliance and color saturation. Mark strongly believes in the intrinsic merit of traditionally made photographic prints. None of his prints have been digitally produced or altered in any way. Mark’s prints have been seen throughout the DelawareValley both in competitions and his many Cibachrome Print Appreciation Programs. In 1991, the Puerto Vallarto Print “White Water” won Best of Show, Color Division in the Wilmington International Exhibition of Photography. The meeting will start with a short how-to lesson, followed by Mr. Friedman, and finish with light refreshments. Camera Club members are always willing to help beginners improve their skills. So if you’re looking for photographic advice, this is the group for you. This meeting is free and open to the public. Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 PM in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 5th & Lafayette, Palmerton. Call 610-826-7285 for more information or visit our website at www. palmertoncameraclub.squarespace.com.

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
NL Football 2.0 The Northern Lehigh Bulldogs have been a fierce squad these last few years. Year after year they have been a contender in the Colonial League. From 2007-2010 Northern Lehigh had an impressive overall record of 34 wins and 13 losses. During those years the program was both Colonial League Champion and District 11 Champion once. That success is mostly accredited to three players who rank among the best in Northern Lehigh and Colonial League history. Jake Kern, Matt Gill and Cody Remaley set multiple records during their high school careers. Collectively they made 12 All-Colonial League teams at the positions of running back, linebacker, wide receiver, defensive back and punter. During Remaley’s four years in varsity level football he made the All-League Team every year as a running back. It is obvious that these players were excellent football players and were integral parts of their teams.
With the three players graduated and off to college, the 2011-2012 Bulldog team has huge holes to fill. To see how the team will regroup I talked to the head coach of the Bulldogs, Joe Tout, to get his perspective on things and it looks like a new philosophy may be in store for the team. “After losing 15 seniors to graduation from last year’s squad, our coaching staff feels the biggest area where we need to reload is with the offensive line. We graduated Cody Remaley, Matt Gill, and Jake Kern. However, we are very happy with this year’s group of running backs and receivers so we need to replace an offensive line that was all seniors. That is definitely the area where we are trying to improve the most,”Tout said. Trying to find leaders on the offensive line, Coach Tout expects Kris Seiler at guard and Kyle Wasilkowski at tackle to bolster the dogs in the trenches. “I think we will progress and work hard. We are a little young on the offensive line and I think we will keep working and get better and perform well on the field,” Wasilkowski said about his teammates. While Kris and Kyle lead the dogs on the offensive line; Seniors Kirk Bender, Dylan Hofmann, David Getz, Trevor Yashur and Kyle Continued on Page 35

starters” he said. Joe Tout is optimistic about his roster for this upcoming season. I think they will fare well. They have some tough competition to conquer this year in Pen Argyl, who they face on October 8th, and Bangor, who they play on October 20th. If these new pieces can fit for the Bulldogs, I think they can put the puzzle together and see the picture of them hoisting the Colonial League Title.

Continued from Page 36 Greenawald are the leaders in the locker room. In the past NL has always been a team that relied mostly on running the ball but according to Tout things might be different this year. “We may be a slightly different team offensively. We will have to adapt to what we do best which right now is throwing the ball a little more than we usually do. We may also spread our offense out a little more than usual and we will try to get a lot of players the ball offensively. However, we feel our strength is our defense with eight returning

Recipe Round-Up Add Crunch To Lunch (NAPS)—While childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years, parents can get good advice on healthful meals for their children from cookbook author Mollie Katzen and from Dr. Brian Wansink, author of “Mindless Eating” and co-director of the Cornell Center for Behavioral Economics in Child Nutrition Programs. Kids are more likely to eat nutritious foods that they help prepare. In fact, a study in the American Heart Journal found that students who brought lunch from home were less likely to be obese than those who had the school lunch. Packing lunch can be a great opportunity to help children make food choices. “You want your kid to eat carrots?” Dr. Wansink says, “Give her a choice between carrots and celery. If you just offer carrots, she’ll feel you’re forcing a vegetable on her. If you offer carrots and celery, she’ll pick one.” Katzen recommends homemade California Walnut Butter as a healthful and delicious sandwich spread or as a dip for vegetables. CALIFORNIA WALNUT B UTTER 2 cups California walnuts ¼ teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons walnut or vegetable oil (or as needed)
Optional, to taste: A little honey A little cinnamon You can make walnut butter using raw, soaked or toasted walnuts. Here’s how to do all three. Raw walnuts: Use raw walnuts for a very creamy and smooth texture that tastes like a just-shelled walnut. Soaked walnuts: This method will remove some of the tannin from the walnut skin and offer a more textured walnut butter. Soak walnuts overnight, drain and discard the water. Then, toast the walnuts in a single layer on a baking sheet at 350° F for about 15 minutes to dry them out (don’t let them get dark!). Cool the walnuts before making them into butter. Toasted walnuts: To enhance the sweet, nutty flavor of walnuts, toast them before making them into butter. Walnut butter with toasted walnuts will provide a coarse-textured finished product. Toast walnuts in a single layer on a baking sheet at 350° F for 8 to 10 minutes or until fragrant. Cool the walnuts before making them into butter. To make the butter: Make walnut butter by putting the walnuts into the bowl of a food processor and grinding them until they become sticky or paste-like. Add the salt. Add the oil, a little bit at a time, until the walnut butter binds together. If you like, add small touches of honey and/or cinnamon to taste. Yields 1 cup, 8 servings For more information and ways to add crunch to lunch, visit www.walnuts.org. Walnut butter is very easy to make. Spread on crostini and garnish with fruit or fresh herbs for an elegant appetizer or use it as a dip for crisp vegetables.

eptember 16, 1989 marked the first day and first year of the Northampton Renaissance Faire on Main St. in Northampton. That first year organizers remember rain and cold weather dampening the day slightly, but a good enough turnout was had and the faire continued on Sunday September 17. That year Borough manager Gene Zarayko pledged to continue the faire in the coming years and have a back-up plan for weather related issues. Back then the Renaissance Faire was organized by Main Street art-gallery operator, Carol Simcoe. The festival was the first of its kind to spark and renew interest in the downtown businesses of Northampton. Much like today’s “Northampton Street Fair,” vendors and craftsmen lined Main Street for four blocks during the then two-day festival
in the borough. The inaugural 1989 Faire including performances by the rock band White Lightning as well as a joint choir from the borough churches. In 1991 the Carol Simcoe stepped down from organizing the event and Carol Marakovits took over. Joined by the Northampton Continued on Page 11

Chamber of Commerce, Marakovits headed organizing the event until she stepped down in 2002. At that time the fair spread four blocks on Main Street and included 125 vendors for the weekend. 2002 entertainers included Marie Levin, a Reba McIntyre impersonator, Glen Miller -- The Big One Man Band, button box accordionist Henry Laurito, The Joe Wolfer Band, the Joe Reichel Band, Dee Dee Lee, Celtic Adventure, Jim Haner the Banjo Man and Impact. By 2005 the Street Fair continued with a few changes. It was the first year that fair had a central theme; vendors and businesses were encouraged to get involved. The event was sponsored by the Northampton fire police and remained a weekend festival including antique tractors, a pig roast and line dancing. The goal was to encourage residents to buy
locally grown produce and support the area farmers. Sunday the Street Fair switched to a swing dancing theme at the central Roxy Theater were a concert was held by Bob Bear and his swing group. Although the street fair is now only a one-day event in the borough, this year’s Northampton Street Fair is continuing the tradition that was started over 20 years ago. Organized and sponsored by the Northampton Area Chamber of Commerce and member businesses the Street Fair continues to promote local businesses in the downtown as well as vendors who support the borough. Chamber President Tony Pristash said; “this isn’t about the Chamber making money, it’s about the vendors and getting the townspeople out and about.”
