From the Editor’s Desk This past weekend, my fiancé and I had a photo shoot scheduled with our wedding photographers, who threw in a free engagement session after we hired them for our wedding. The reason I decided to go with these particular photographers is simple – they have passion for their art. Jess, my fiancé, and I met with a few photographers who gave us the prerequisite price sheet and went over their rote salesperson routine. In contrast, the photographers we decided to go with (a husband and wife team from Hazleton, Pa.), brought us into their studio and were so excited to talk about photography and show us projects they were working on that we lost track of time discussing their art and didn’t even get to pricing and “selling” their services until well over an hour into the meeting. I was sold long before that. Passion for art and creativity is something I hold in very high regard and we have so many talented artists right here in our area. From Margie Long up in Carbon County who cannot stop painting (her husband told me he finds her up in the middle of the night, brush in hand, working on whatever
Joe Korba
landscape or new concept struck her), to Charlie Applegate, a sculptor from Danielsville who first caught my attention with a life-sized Iron Man statue in his front yard, to James Benetzky, the photographer who shot the awesome cover image that adorns this very issue, we have dozens and dozens of artists of all stripes living in our midst. I think what separates the artistically inclined from more, might I say, pragmatic personalities, is that they don’t choose to be artists. It’s not a profession. Even if Margie never attended an art show with her paintings, I suspect she would still be at her home near Beltzville producing a prolific amount of work on her canvasses. If I didn’t make my living producing this publication, you can bet I would still be writing every day, if only for myself. In this regard, I don’t believe art is a profession or vocation—in my opinion, it’s nothing less than a wonderful affliction, one that there is no cure for. I hope you all enjoy this edition of the Gazette, as well as all of the artists (our photographers, writers, and Tony, our graphic designer), who work hard on getting it out to you every two weeks

September 17, 1959 What we like to hear from the old ways, how people worked years ago. Why do we like this, some may ask us? This is the reason. One can always learn something that does him good. George Heiney, from the Harmony Grange, told us that he still remembers that often a box was fastened to the wall on the threshing floor in the barn to hang in a flail, when they were threshing. You all know that the farmers thrashed with the flail before the threshing machines came out. When the farmers have thrashed a layer of sheaves, they had to stop, put the flail away, get the shaking fork and shake the straw with the fork that the grain fell onto the threshing floor. Then the straw was forked over onto a pile and the grain was shoveled up with a wooden shovel. Then what we want to get to is this. When they stopped working with the flail, what did they do with it? Did they throw them on the threshing floor? Oh no; for that [purpose] was that box fastened on the wall. The box was long and small, but deep enough to hang in the club of the flail. Now why are we interested in such things? We never want to thresh with a flail and hope, also, that no farmer needs to do something like that anymore. But this is what we

learn here from this. We should be so particular with our tools that we use while working, like the farmer was with the flail. We should not just throw our working tools anywhere. We should be particular with everything. We should have a place for everything and everything should be put in its place. Many homes would look better, if the children would learn this from little on up. Our forefathers always had good ways [to do things] that we should follow. [One evening the Pennsylvania German Friends Group at St. Peters Lutheran Church had a discussion about threshing. Our leader, Dennis Lutterschmidt, informed us that his grandfather always used the flail to thresh. And he also shook the straw (with a fork) so that the grain would fall to the threshing floor and also the chaff would blow away. (He first opened wide both the barn door and also that door in the fore bay, that a good breeze could blow through.) As Florence said, our forefathers did have good ways to do things.]

Lehigh Carbon Community College President Dr. Donald W. Snyder to Retire December 31 Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) president Dr. Donald W. Snyder announced to the college’s Board of Trustees that he would retire Dec. 31, 2013. Snyder had planned on a summer 2014 retirement, but advised the board that his continued health concerns forced him to reconsider. “I faced open heart surgery and related health issues during the past eight months but looked forward to accomplishing my remaining goals over the next year. Last week, however, I was advised that I face yet another health challenge – this one with cancer. Unfortunately, this diagnosis will require another medical leave for surgery,” Snyder told the trustees. “Much of the past week has been spent reviewing options and talking with my family. In reaching a decision, there was a need to take into consideration what is necessary for a full recovery of my health as well as what is in the best interest of the future of the college.” Snyder, 61, has been LCCC’s president since September 2000. Previously, he spent 20 years as a state representative of Pennsylvania’s 134th District, including leadership positions as the House Republican Policy Chairman from 19951996 and as House Majority Whip from 1997-2000.

“Serving LCCC has been a privilege and an honor,” Snyder said. “I’m proud to have been a part of LCCC’s focus on bringing to our students the very best in academics and a rich, rewarding jump-start on their careers. We provide college access to community members of all backgrounds who seek enrichment and enhanced employment opportunities,” he said. “Building strong partnerships and services to benefit the sponsoring school districts and career technical institutes by creating college and career pathways for their high school students and residents has been a driving force for my administration,” Snyder said. “I am proud of the college's strength and flexibility in adapting its curriculum to meet the ever-changing needs of the workforce of Lehigh, Schuylkill and Carbon counties.” Under Snyder’s guidance, LCCC added a stateof-the-art new campus in Tamaqua, Schuylkill County, expanded the college’s presence at LCCC Allentown at the Donley Center, and implemented a distance learning program which now represents more than 14% of total enrollment. LCCC also expanded dual enrollment programs with sponsoring school districts with college courses for high school students. Snyder also provided direction for the integration of LCCC education services into a key workforce development, economic partner and community builder. Snyder emphasized customer service and student success throughout the college. Completed construction projects on the Schnecksville campus during Snyder’s tenure include the Student Union and Technology Center, the recently completed Community Services Center conference and academic facility, the Wellness Center, the Educational Support Services wing, and renovation of the college’s former library building to include a Business Enterprise Center, expanded bookstore and food Continued on Page 34

September 26th dedication for Blue Mountain Resort’s Splash Water Park A gathering of public figures and other honored guests will be present to take part in the dedication of Blue Mountain Resort and Summit Splash Water Park’s new entrance. The ceremony marks the completion of the new road and the beginning of Blue Mountain’s largest construction project: Summit Splash Water Park. Blue Mountain will celebrate the completion of its new entrance with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Both of the owners of Blue Mountain, Ms. Barbara Green and Mr. Bruce Ebert, as well as senior management from Blue Mountain Resort will attend. “This expansion is just the next step in our four season growth strategy.” said Ms. Barbara Green. The opening of the entrance is the first step toward opening the park in the spring of 2015. The idea for the water park began two years ago, when Barbara Green, Blue Mountain Resort’s President envisioned expanding the resort to a year-round facility. “We are excited about the possibility of creating over 200 full-time jobs and supporting Carbon County with jobs and recreation,” stated Green. “The opening of this new entrance is a milestone in the history of Blue Mountain Resort,” said Heidi
Lutz, Director of Sales and Marketing. “For more than three decades, guests have come to Blue Mountain for the best skiing in Pennsylvania. Now Blue Mountain is closer to offering the best spring and summer activities.” Summit Splash will include a giant wave pool, a lazy river, and tubing slides all in a beautiful mountain setting. The overall theme of the park will be“playful fun in a beautiful mountain setting”, as Blue Mountain Resort offers recreation options while preserving the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

LCCC President Retires Continued from Page 10 services area. The college also transformed the former Intermediate Unit administration offices into the Rothrock Library and Learning Center and created the nationally acclaimed Fowler Education Center. Currently, the Administration Building is being renovated to better provide more efficient student services and to provide expanded college transfer and veterans services centers. State-of-the-art technology was added throughout the college and all existing main campus facilities were upgraded and refurbished, including a new pedestrian mall, athletic fields and campus-wide landscaping. Snyder is also credited with developing the partnership with the John E. Morgan Foundation, fulfilling the Morgan Foundation’s desire to fully fund an associate degree for graduates of Tamaqua High School. “When I started as LCCC’s president, the majority of our students attended part-time and only a small percentage continued their education with four-year institutions. We sought to provide greater opportunities for seamless transfers through partnerships with many public and private colleges and universities – several of

whom now offer baccalaureate degree programs on our campus, including the state’s first Bachelor of Applied Science degree program developed in partnership with Bloomsburg University and a mechatronics engineering degree with Temple University,” Snyder said of this critical component of his administration. “This empowers Lehigh Valley residents to continue their education with an excellent four-year institution while enabling them to continue to live and work in the Lehigh Valley.” Ken Mohr, chair of the LCCC Board of Trustees, had high praise for the president in a prepared statement. “Dr. Snyder has served Lehigh Carbon Community College with distinction with his long-time advocacy of an affordable, high quality education; his outreach to the academically underserved of the Lehigh Valley; and for his untiring efforts on behalf of the more than 300,000 students who enrolled in credit and noncredit programs during his tenure,” Mohr said. “Dr. Snyder’s leadership is evident in the major construction projects and renovations completed to the main campus in Schnecksville and to the facilities in Tamaqua and Allentown which transformed LCCC into an academic powerhouse – more than doubling enrollment, with a ten-fold increase in scholarship aid, and a twenty-fold increase in the college’s endowment through

the college’s Foundation. The Board of Trustees is deeply grateful for his commitment and determination to see LCCC students succeed,” Mohr said. Snyder is a 1971 graduate of LCCC with an associate degree in business administration. He was named Outstanding Alumnus of the Year in 1981 and received LCCC’s Collegiate Award of Distinction in 1997. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Pennsylvania State University, an M.B.A. from Lehigh University, a juris doctor from Villanova University School of Law and a Master of Laws in Commerce and Taxation from the Dickinson School of Law. He lives in South Whitehall with his wife, Nancy. “I look forward to continuing my involvement with the college in the coming years, continuing to grow community partnerships and strengthening LCCC’s alumni relations,” Snyder said. Mohr stated that the Board of Trustees knew of Snyder’s original retirement date of August 2014 and planned to conduct a search for a new leader for LCCC to take over on Sept. 1, 2014. “We will continue with that plan and conduct a search,” Mohr said. Mohr also announced that the Trustees plan to take action to appoint senior vice president, Dr. Ann Bieber, to serve as interim president.

Coffee on-the-go (literally): The Rolling Barista opens for business
By Danielle Tepper Photos provided by Doug Snyder Doug Snyder is known as “the coffee guy” at work. For the past 4 years, he has worked as a barista in the Star Cafe' at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem. His love for the hot aromatic beverage started during his childhood in Walnutport. “I grew up with coffee,” explained Doug. “Me and my dad did construction together and he had a pot a day during working hours.” Doug met Melanie, his wife of 22 years, when they were in seminary together in Kentucky. He was studying to become a pastor, she was studying to “serve” in whatever way would give her the opportunity to “have a lasting effect on people’s lives,” she said. When Doug returned to Pa. with Melanie six years ago, they already had a plan in motion of how they could use coffee to connect with the community. “There’s something intimate and very personal about coffee,” Melanie said. “It’s relaxing and soothing, people love the aroma, they look forward to their coffee breaks. So we’re trying to do that, but in a creative way, thinking outside of the box.” The concept they came up with is a unique spin on the classic coffee shop—instead of customers coming to the coffee, The Rolling Barista brings coffee to the customers. “It was time for something new. We envisioned a

mobile coffee station as an overlooked opportunity to connect with people,” said Doug. “We’re very concerned with good customer service. We wanted something that would allow us to chat with people in a non-threatening environment. I’m an extrovert, so I’m into that.” The Rolling Barista is a coffee shop on wheels: A fullyequipped cart that can churn out lattes and smoothies at events such as birthday parties and family reunions. Operational for less than a month, Doug and Melanie are learning to work out the kinks and are hopeful they’ll eventually find a rhythm that will allow them to expand to service high-volume events like wedding receptions and high school football games. “We’re still working on the flow of it,” Doug said. “We’re both used to high-stress situations.” Doug has served up to 375 people during an eight-hour shift at St. Luke’s. They both plan to get certified with the American Barista Association within the next 6 to 12 months. In additional to excellent customer service, they’re also committed to quality: “The espresso is an Italian roast, which is important to me because it is good,” said Doug. “The beans are from Lancaster County. They’re locally roasted and flavored and sent to us within a couple days, so you know it’s fresh.” They’d like to see their eventual signature be the fact that they try to offer products that are as local and healthy as possible. They might even offer demonstrations to teach people how to whip up delicious Continued on Page 38

The Rolling Barista Continued from Page 37 drinks “just for their own enjoyment.” For now, they’re just looking to enjoy their small-scale venture and offer coffee as an ice-breaker to people in the community getting to know each other. They have no plans to become a massive operation. “We’re not looking to make a big name, but we are looking to make an impact,” said Melanie. Their “dream,” according to Melanie, is to eventually be in a position where they can facilitate a safe place for community members to help each other. “A nonprofit situation, where we could offer a gathering place for people who are hurting to work on their needs together,” explained Melanie.“We could have different therapeutic resources like music, art, and pets. We would just be the host, a safe contact point, and it would just be people helping people. That’s the big picture and this is our baby step toward that goal.” To book The Rolling Barista for an event, call 610-973-9171 or visit www. therollingbarista.com.

Lehigh Township Historical Society Remember the Lehigh Township Historical Centre in Pennsville is open on the fourth Sunday in September, September 22 from 1 to 4 p.m. The historical centre will be open on Sunday, October 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. next month, which will be the last open house of the 2013 season. Visit the historical centre soon to learn what life was like in days gone by. We have many new items that would be interesting for all ages to see! With the latest autumn-like weather we've had, our thoughts are turning to our annual fall mum sale which will be held at the historical centre on Saturday, September 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mums not sold on Saturday will be sold on September 22, from 1 to 4 p.m. Keep this in mind if you are going to buy mums for your landscaping purposes. We will have an assortment of varieties and colors for you to choose from. Our prices have not gone up, they will be the same as 2011 and 2012. Remember to come early for the best selection! Along with the mum sale, there will also be a bake sale. A couple of members are going to make hot dogs too, so come for lunch and buy your mums in one trip! Mark your calendar for a presentation by Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire Company members on Sunday, October 13 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's UCC of
Indianland (787 Almond Road, Lehigh Township), in the fellowship hall. St. Paul's Schoolhouse nearby will also be open at that time. Following the program, light refreshments will be served. Come out and learn what the volunteers' many roles are in Lehigh Township and surrounding communities. If you have not yet done so, plan a visit to the restored schoolhouse, which was built in 1865. Step back in time and explore the schoolhouse where many students were taught without the use of air conditioning, bathroom facilities, etc., and classes held in the schoolroom were quite different. The regular monthly meeting is held on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. for anyone interested in joining us. Anyone who is interested in history is welcome. We welcome volunteers anytime. If you have some spare time and have special talents, we could use you! Contact Ken at 610-767-5989 for more information.

Davies says his team “has a very good chance” at winning the league, but he realizes that it really is a tossup at this point. Needing to win out will be a tall task for a Northampton squad that, according to Davies, doesn’t have as much depth as it normally does. Therefore Davies is looking at two seniors, Kevin Kunkle and Tyler Smith, to lead the team to the playoffs. “They both have been playing since ninth grade consistently. They both play AJGA [American Junior Golf Association] events all throughout the summer and they are both really serious about golf,” said Davies. “They both are fielding offers from post-secondary schools to play after high school. They will be continuing their careers after Northampton.” Moving ahead, Davies is having his golfers hone in on their short games as he states that within 100 yards is what really counts in golf. Joke Corner My girlfriend insisted
on going to the art gallery, so I went along with it and after an hour of looking at pictures, I called her over and said, "What about this one?" "Are you serious?" "Yeah, it's the best one I've seen yet." "If you don't want to be here, then leave." "When did I say that?" "When you called me over to look at the EXIT sign."
