By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette

Playing in my garden is a big part of my summertime fun and personally, I’m hoping my garden continues to produce fresh veggies through October. As I always do this time of year, I’m thinking about building some kind of greenhouse before the summertime ends, plus of course, a few bike rides.

What’s different this year regarding the annual greenhouse dream is that I have just been offered a load of used bricks that I’ll be picking up this coming weekend. I’m seeing them as the floor for the greenhouse – the kind of floor that will absorb the sun’s daytime heat and radiate it back at night. So that will probably be part of how I finish out this year’s “summertime,” but whatever your favorite summertime activities are be sure and make the most of them before the chill of autumn arrives. For those of you who have children heading into the next academic year, we have some interesting reading in this issue you might find valuable.

The end of summer is quickly approaching and by that I mean the Labor Day weekend – the end of “summertime” and summertime activities before everyone heads back to school and autumn slowly appears on the horizon. Will we miss the highest temperatures of this summer? Maybe not so much, but we probably will miss our fun, summertime outdoor activities.

In “Parenting Tips for School Year Success” we provide you with things you can do to help your child succeed in this next school year. One of the key areas is the building of relationships. Read this article to not only find out how to build a good “school year” relationship with your own child, but just as important, with their teachers. If you have one or more children heading into the new school year, getting them outfitted with everything they’ll need can become expensive. That said there are a number ways you can cut Back-to-Schooland

End-of-Summer

For many parents one of the biggest challenges is releasing their child into the world. It could be dropping the child off to their very first day of school, or sending them off to college clear across the country. Read “From Pre-School to College: Releasing Your Child into the World” for tips on how to manage those situations. Please enjoy the rest of this year’s “summertime” and we will look forward to seeing you for our next issue right before Labor Day.

Be sure and read “Helping with Homework” to learn a few things you can do to give your child a strong foundation for learning this year, and long-term. As a parent you may have a major concern about your child being bullied. It is a significant issue that can appear both in-person and online (cyberbullying). Be sure and read “Helping Your Child Deal with Bullies” for information around this serious issue.

When building a relationship with your child’s teacher, there are some things to avoid if you want the relationship to be a positive one, including:

Continued from page 5 distractions and put schoolwork at the forefront throughout the academic year. Studying requires reading, so first instill a love of reading in your child. Keep plenty of interesting books at home and read together on a regular basis. Next, limit those activities at home that will distract your child from their academic duties. Watching television and playing electronic games are typical activities that take time away from homework. On the other hand, teaching your child to use the Internet for constructive purposes like research, while limiting random online surfing will greatly support their academic work.

It is important to establish open lines of communication with your child, so they feel they can come to you when anything troubling takes place in school. Talking and listening is something you should do together on a daily basis, even if it’s just to talk about details of their day. When Hosted By: Events By Jennifer Lynn & Company (484)507-2750

open-ended questions to get the communication rolling like, “What was your favorite thing that happened today?” The parent-teacher relationship is the other relationship that is extremely important. You want to create an open line of communication with the teacher to last you throughout the school year. The communication in that relationship will allow you to understand where your child is academically and will also help identify any problems in their earliest stages. Be sure to make time and introduce yourself to your child’s teacher right at the beginning of the school year. Convey your interest in helping your child succeed academically. Always attend parentteacher conferences and carefully read all correspondence from your child’s teacher and school. Things to Avoid

Purchasing bulk deals on school supplies is tempting, but unless you have several kids in school at the same time, chances are you won't go through an oversized box of pencils or an entire ream of composition paper. Instead, go in with a few other parents to split bulk school supplies.

Stack Sales with Other Discounts

Purchasing classroom essentials not only takes time, but also requires spending a lot of money. To prevent back-to-school shopping from draining your bank account, use these savvy tips for landing deals and maximizing your savings. Take Stock of What You Have at Home Before heading to the store, look around your home to see what supplies you could use for the upcoming school year. Gather office and art supplies into different piles to make it easier to take inventory of what you already have. Then you’ll know exactly what you need to buy. Spread Out Purchases Instead of shopping for all your kids' supplies at once, spread out purchases over a few weeks. A few extra trips to the store may actually save you big money. Each week, shop the loss leaders at your store, the items on the front page of a store's circular that have been deeply discounted. That will allow you to find some of the best deals, such as 1-cent folders and more. Split Bulk Deals

Instilling good study habits in your child and establishing good relationships with your child and their teacher will strongly support your child’s success this coming school year.

deficiencies. They must divide their time among students as they see fit.

• Do not show up for a meeting with the teacher without scheduling it ahead of time. Teachers are busy people who like to have time to prepare for parent meetings. Schedule the meeting with the teacher at a time that is convenient for both of you, and let the teacher know what you want to talk about so they can prepare accordingly.

• Do not blame the teacher if problems arise within the classroom. Even if the teacher is responsible for the issue, it is much more constructive to focus on solving the problem, rather than placing blame. In the long run, the positive relationship you maintain with the teacher will be much more beneficial for your child.

Frugal Shopping Tips for Back-to-School

Many retailers, including Apple, Dell and Microsoft, offer discounts to college students as long as you can show your identification card at checkout. Teachers are also offered exclusive discounts on school supplies year-round from stores such as Barnes and Noble, while other retailers offer seasonal deals to educators. Wait It Out

8 News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || AUGUST 18, 2022 Frugal Shopping Tips for Back-to-School Continued from page 7 Compare Prices Before You Buy Whether shopping in store or online, comparing prices is key to getting the best bang for your back-to-school bucks. Most big-box stores will price-match competitor deals. Run a quick Google search on your mobile device or use a free barcode scanning app like ShopSavvy to run a quick price comparison. Then, speak with a store associate or manager to inquire about price matching. Flaunt Your Status

There are plenty of great sales to take advantage of during the back-to-school rush, but that doesn't mean that all deals are good deals. Seasonal items such as winter clothing will become cheaper after school starts. If your child's clothing is beat up or doesn't fit, purchase summer items on clearance to wear during the first few weeks of school and then layer through winter. Host a Clothing Swap Buying new clothes and shoes for kids can feel like a waste of money considering how quickly they grow out of them. Instead of buying all new items, consider hosting a clothing swap with other families in your neighborhood to help each other save more.

If your child is being bullied, you want to act to help stop it, if possible. And even if bullying isn't an issue right in your house right now, it's important to discuss it so your kids will be prepared if it does happen. When is it Bullying? Most kids get teased by a sibling or a friend at some point. And it's not usually harmful when done in a playful, friendly, and mutual way, and both kids find it funny. But when teasing becomes hurtful, unkind, and constant, it crosses the line into bullying and needs to stop. Bullying is intentional tormenting in physical, verbal, or psychological ways. It can range from hitting, shoving, name-calling, threats, and mocking to extorting money and possessions. Some kids bully by shunning others and spreading

rumors about them. Others use social media or electronic messaging to taunt others or hurt their feelings – this is known as cyberbullying. Kids bully for a mix of reasons. Sometimes they pick on kids because they need a victim – someone who seems emotionally or physically weaker, or just acts or appears different in some way. Bullies do this to feel more important, popular, or in control. Although some bullies are bigger or stronger than their victims, that's not always the case. What Are the Signs of Bullying? Unless your child tells you about bullying – or has visible bruises or injuries – it can be hard to know if it's happening. But there are some warning signs. Parents might notice kids: • acting differently or seeming anxious • not eating, not sleeping well, or not doing the things they usually enjoy

If your child tells you about being bullied, listen calmly and offer comfort and support. Kids are often reluctant to tell adults about bullying because they feel embarrassed and ashamed. Sometimes kids feel like it's their own fault, that if they looked or acted differently it wouldn't be happening. Sometimes they're scared that if the bully finds out that they told, it will get worse. Others are worried that their parents won't believe them or will urge them to fight back when they're scaredPraiseto.your child for doing the right thing by talking to you about it. Remind your child that they're not alone – a lot of people get bullied at some point. Explain that it's the bully who is behaving badly – not your child. Reassure your child that you will figure out what to do about it together.

Let your kids know that if they're being bullied or harassed – or see it happening to someone else – it's important to talk to someone about it, whether it's you, another adult (a teacher, school counselor, or family friend), or a sibling.

Underachieving students usually need to learn to focus on a task and stick with it until completion – without nagging from a parent or teacher. However, this is not an easy lesson for these children to learn, and it takes plenty of parental time and patience before the concept catches on. Cultivate Will-Power

Underachieving children need to learn to stay on track with a task until it is finally finished. Will-power might also be referred to as selfdiscipline – a necessary component for success in school and a great foundational piece for life as well.

(3/21)

If you have an underachieving student in your family, teach them that their success or failure rests on them alone – not on their teachers or parents. Then stay engaged to encourage them in their work. When students learn that they hold the key to their destiny, they become more motivated to succeed academically. Put the Child in the Driver’s Seat Encourage your child to try to solve problems on their own before asking for help. That way, when the call does come, you can rest assured you are offering much-needed assistance rather than taking control of the situation. The role of the parent is a significant one when it comes to the academic success of a child. From teaching your child good homework habits to dealing with specific issues like underachievement, your child needs you to be their coach, advocate and fiercest fan throughout their academic career.

An area of the home set up for the task of homework fosters productivity and focus. A homework corner can be established as early as first grade. It should be equipped with all necessary supplies, including paper, pencils, erasers and good lighting so your child can put all of their attention on the task at hand.

Check Homework to be Sure it is Complete Once your child is finished with their homework, look it over to be sure it is complete and correct. If your child is struggling with a particular subject and you don’t feel equipped to help, find a tutor or another family member who can walk them through the work. When homework is completed, be sure to praise your child for a job well done Dealing with the Underachiever

Give them a sense of what to expect / Talk to your child about what to expect when they get to school – where they'll be going, what they'll be doing and so forth. If you can, take your child to visit their future classroom together before school begins – ideally when the teacher is there. Ask your child about their feelings / It can be difficult for a four- or five-year-old to answer a question about whether they're happy at school. Instead ask specific questions. Ask who they played with that day or had lunch with. Ask them if there are any naughty boys or girls in their class. Your child might not know what the word 'bully' means, but in-school bullying can begin very early. Come up with a goodbye ritual / Keep your morning departure short and sweet. Not prolonging your goodbye will make it easier for your child. Also invent a special parting ritual to do every time you drop them at school – such as a high-five, or saying something like, "I'll be back to get you soon, long before we see the moon.”

Sending Children Off to College

If you’re sending a child off to college you’re really sending a young adult out into the world and that can be stressful. Be reassured as a collegestudent parent that you are still important despite your role being significantly different. Remember that your child, now a college student, still needs you to guide them, to mentor them, to give them

Use teachers as a resource / Chances are your child's teacher has experience with kids starting school for the first time. They will be able to answer questions for you and may also have suggestions to make the transition easier.

Here are some things you can do to help your youngest student head off to their first day of either pre-school or kindergarten. Start your school routine early / According to the National Sleep Foundation, children age 3 to 5 should get at least 10-13 hours of sleep each night. So, it's important to set a consistent timing for your child to wake up and go to bed. Start that schedule right around now, a couple of weeks into August to get it established before school begins.

And when you send your child off to college, which could be clear across the country, it will feel like an even higher level of letting them go. In both cases, it may not be easy for either of you, but ultimately you need to make sure your child feels as well prepared, safe and secure in the situation as possible. 'S hett net besser sei kenne. Juscht recht fer an're gudi Vendu geh, eens wie em Will Brubacker seins. Net yuscht Freind un Nochbere, awwer aa fremme Leit, as Versammelt-sach un alde Frees eikaafe wollte. Sell kennt net geduh warre, wann en Weibsmensch debei waert! "Daadi, guck yuscht mol do. "Gaar nix, Groier? Du bischt vun

The Ripply Mirror

It was early morning, the second Saturday in May. And how nice the weather was. It could not have been better. Just right to go to a good sale. One like Will Brubacker's. The sale was set to begin at nine o'clock. People were already on their way before seven. Not just friends and neighbors, but strangers, who want to buy accumulated things and old junk. And that is what there was to buy at Will's Sale. What causes such a good sale? Number one, he was 92 years old when he died. Number two, he was always single. He always stayed home with his folks. And when they were no longer here, he took over the place and everything in it. That makes most of the sale items over a hundred years old, and he never got rid of anything. That could not have been done, if a woman had been involved. The best sales for accumulated items are from single men. A single woman has no better sale than a married one, because a woman's nature is to throw everything out.Now when a household sale is held out in the country and it doesn't look like rain, all the large furniture, such as chairs, tables, beds, benches, and everything else are set in rows out on the lawn, often against the backyard fence. Small items and more valuable things were placed on a table inside the house. When the sale began someone handed the small items through the open window to the auctioneer who sold it. When it’s time to start the sale, the auctioneer starts wherever he wishes, perhaps from a row in back or from the table. The Brubacker sale had rows of furniture all over the place, front yard, back yard, garden and out in the orchard. Looking down the rows, you saw such things as wardrobes, a small parlor heater, a kerosene stove, and all the equipment you would need for butchering and a bar stool. At the end of the row, leaning against an old apple tree was an old ripply mirror. The people who walked out that row didn't bother looking at the mirror. No one was interested in it. Finally, a man and his daughter, about seven years old, came by. When she saw the mirror, she was very happy. "Daddy, just look at this. See how strange I look in this old mirror? Daddy, I would love to have that mirror. Would you buy it for me?" "What would you do with it? asked her father." "Why I would hang it in my play house, my friend Matilda and I could have such fun seeing how we look in it."

Der ripplich Schpiggel hot selli Baahn vun sei Lewes gewwe. Doch hot's yung Meedel viel Freed grickt vun seller ripplich Schpiggel. S' iss, wie Sach eem drefft, as die Unnerschitt macht.

- John Kline, Reamstown, PA

A few hours later, the sale had moved to the orchard. The auctioneer moved down the row selling one thing after another. Finally, he got to the old mirror. He made a big fuss about it's bad condition and asked if anyone was crazy enough to bid a dollar? As quick as Daddy bid a dollar, the auctioneer yelled sold. Then he said to his clerk as they were walking to the next row, "That mirror was worth nothing at all." The clerk answered, "Nothing at all, you say, but, in fact, you are way off the mark. Why it means everything to that little girl who got it. She expects to have fun with it." Yet it has a greater meaning than that. That ripply mirror changed Will Brubacker's life. Let us go over the situation. Will's folks had only one mirror, this ripply one. They thought they could get by with it. Young Will looked into the mirror when he was a little boy. When he was

Touch of Dutch Continued from page 23 a little older, he combed his hair looking in it. And when he matured to an adult, he used it for shaving for all of his life. So Will thought that he was ugly or unattractive. In those days, people didn't have a mirror in every corner and place as we do today. Will very seldom left the farm, so it is unlikely he ever used a good mirror. Then when Will got to the age when boys become interested in girls, he was very self-conscious and got things backwards. When he visited a place with young women, they would giggle, as young do when a good looking, young man approaches. But he thought they were laughing at him for being unattractive, so he never dated and never married. That ripply mirror helped to create the pathway for Will’s life. Yet in her young life, that ripply mirror gave much pleasure. It’s how things strike you that makes the big difference. Did you know about 62% of the U.S. population is eligible to give blood? But, only about 3% does. By making an appointment to help save lives with the American Red Cross in August, donors can pump up the blood supply and keep it from falling to shortage levels. Platelet donors are especially needed now. As a thank-you, all who come to give Aug. 1-31 will be automatically entered for a chance to win gas for a year, a $6,000 value. There will be three lucky winners. Everyone who comes to give blood or platelets in August will also receive a $10 e-gift card to a merchant of choice.* Donors can schedule an appointment to give using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Blood drive safety The Red Cross follows a high standard of safety and infection control. The Red Cross will continue to socially distance wherever possible at blood drives, donation centers and facilities. While donors are no longer required to wear a face mask, individuals may choose to continue to wear a mask for any reason. The Red Cross will also adhere to more stringent face mask requirements per state and/or local guidance, or at the request of blood drive sponsors. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at a drive. How to donate blood

This year the Lehigh Township Police Dept. and community welcomed over 1,000 people to National Night Out at Indian Trail Park. The event started off with a singing of the National Anthem by 5th grade Lehigh Elementary School student, Courtney Edwards, with local American Legion Post 899 flying the colors to open the evening. Over 25 local businesses and groups shared their information to the public. Demonstrations by K9 Cash and Officer Roth and Wolfpack Search & Rescue showed what highly trained four-legged friends can do for public safety. The evening ended with a fly-over by the Pennsylvania State Police Aviation unit, Trooper 1, followed by raffles and a duck race in the Indian Creek. Horse and carriage rides by Lisa Steiner were given around the outside of the park and some dogs from Pibbles Paws Safe Haven Dog Rescue may have even found some homes. Dunk tank participants included Frank Zamadics, Public Works Director, Mike Rehrig, L.T. Fire Department, State Representative Zach Mako, and Chief of Police Scott Fogel.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/ RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

About the American Red Cross: The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides comfort to victims of disasters; supplies about 40% of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; distributes international humanitarian aid; and supports veterans, military members and their families. 5. Get into a routine. When will you make the time to do your homework every day? Find the time of day that works best for you (this can change day-to-day, depending on your schedule!), and make a plan to hit the books.

12 Study Tips for Back to School

7. Get real. When you’re looking at the homework you have to get done tonight, be realistic about how long things actually take. Gauging that reading a history

BIRTHDAY COUPON

4. School supplies (alone) don’t make you organized. Come up with a system and keep to it. Do you keep one big binder for all your classes with colorcoded tabs? Or do you prefer to keep separate notebooks and a folder for handouts? Keep the system simple—if it’s too fancy or complicated, you are less likely to keep it up everyday.

6. Learn how to create a distraction-free zone. A study on workplace distractions found that it takes workers an average of 25 minutes to return to what they were working on pre-interruption. Try turning off your phone notifications or blocking Twitter (temporarily) on your computer so you can concentrate on the homework tasks at hand.

Now is the time to break out of your same-old homework habits. Try these study tips and get the brain boost you need for back to school.

2. Track more than HW in your school planner. Keeping a calendar helps you plan ahead—but you’ve got more going on than just homework assignments! Make sure you’re marking your extracurricular, work, and social commitments, too. (Tests, band practice, away games, SAT dates, half-days and holidays are just a few examples of reminders for your planner.)

1. You don’t need ONE study space. A well-stocked desk in a quiet place at home is key, but sometimes you need variety. Coffee shops, libraries, parks, or even just moving to the kitchen table will give you a change of scenery which can prompt your brain to retain information better.

3. Start small. If you’ve got a big assignment looming, like a research paper, stay motivated by completing a piece of the project every few days. Write one paragraph each night. Or, do 5 algebra problems from your problem set at a time, and then take a break.

11. Don’t let a bad grade keep you down. A rough start to the semester doesn’t have to sink your GPA. Take proactive steps by checking your grades regularly online and getting a tutor if you need one.

12. Make a friend in every class. Find a few people you can contact from each of your classes if you have a homework question or had to miss class (and do the same for them!). Then when it comes time to study for exams, you’ll already have a study group.

12

9. Look over your notes each night to make sure you’ve got it. Study Tips Continued from page 39 Fill in details, edit the parts that don’t make sense, and star or highlight the bits of information that you know are most important. Interacting with your notes will help you remember them. You can also use Homework Help to get your questions answered 24/7.

40 News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || AUGUST 18, 2022 chapter will take an hour and writing a response will take another 30 minutes will help you plan how you spend your time.

8. Use class time wisely. Is your teacher finished lecturing, but you still have 10 minutes of class left? Get a jump on your chemistry homework while it’s still fresh in your mind. Or use the time to ask your teacher about concepts that were fuzzy the first time.

10. Study a little every day. Cramming Spanish vocabulary for a quiz might work in the short-term, but when comes time to study for midterms, you’ll be back at square 1. You might remember the vocab list long enough to ace the quiz, but reviewing the terms later will help you store them for the long haul.
