Be Healthy, Be Well By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette
Welcome to our health and wellness issue. “Health and Wellness” – that’s a catchy little phrase, but what does it mean? The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (illness).” WHO defines wellness as “the optimal state of health of individuals and groups,” and wellness is expressed as “a positive approach to living.” Achieving the “optimal state of health” as an 255E South Best Ave. Walnutport, PA 18088

individual strikes me as an ongoing personal quest. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I am certainly not there yet. I feel like I’m trying every day to be honest with you, but I also feel that I need to become better at it – a long way to go. In this issue we are going to look at various things that can impact our personal sense of health and wellness. For instance, stress – something we all undoubtedly experience every day at least once. There actually are good types of stress, like the momentary stress of a big “surprise!” birthday moment, but generally stress is not our friend. In one of the articles in this issue we take a look at the kinds of physical and mental ailments stress can contribute to in “How Stress Affects Your Body.” Certainly the pandemic has, and continues to cause stress for almost everyone, but that situation has given rise to innovation in the form of telemedicine. Telemedicine was made for this moment when social distancing has become so important. It allows doctors and their patients to connect virtually for the majority of their routine appointments and interactions. Find out much more in “The Rise of Telemedicine.” Turning our attention to health and wellness Continued on page 4

during the summer months, we have suggestions from everydayhealth.com on “Healthy Road Trip Snacks.” We also look at how you can stay hydrated in the summer months both with water and also foods that have high water content – there are quite a few. You’ll find lots of ideas and details in “Stay Healthy, Stay Hydrated!” Sadly, drowning is a leading cause of death for children. So we have gathered from redcross.org a range of information on water safety and allaround “water smarts.” Be sure and read “Summer Water Safety Tips” to learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones this summer and actually throughout the year when playing in and around water. Finally, we have a profile on one of our local health and wellness partners, Bechtel’s Pharmacy in Slatington. Bechtel’s Pharmacy has been connected with our region’s community on many levels for a full sixty years. Find out more about this great local business in “Community Wellness Partner: Bechtel’s Pharmacy.” Enjoy the issue, be healthy, be well.

later, the store moved to its current location at 302 Main Street. Significant Community Involvement The business was built with excellent service, not just to its customers, but also to its community. Mr. Bechtel was an active member of the Slatington Chamber of Commerce, Northern Lehigh Jaycees, Rotary Club of Slatington, Lehigh Valley Pharmaceutical Association, and the Assumption B.V.M. Parish. He also served on the Slatington Borough Council. All these activities showed Mr. Bechtel’s commitment to his business, community, and profession. When his son Edward joined the business in 1983 as an additional pharmacist, Edward continued the family tradition for community and professional engagement. Edward has served his community as Committee Chairman for Boy Scout Troop 58 and president of the Northern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce. He has served his profession as president of both the Lehigh Valley Pharmacists Association and the PA Pharmacist Association. He has served the citizens of the Commonwealth as a member the State Board of Pharmacy, acting as chairman for two years. Both Joe and Ed Bechtel have been honored by their profession with The Bowl of Hygeia Award for Community Service. They are also past Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce Spirit Award recipients. As Joe Bechtel prepared for retirement, another son, John, joined the business as its business manager, getting involved with the youth sports programs of the Northern Lehigh area. Known as Jack, he served as the Director of the NLYAA News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || AUGUST 5, 2021
Basketball program for ten years and coached baseball, soccer, and basketball. Jack has also served as treasurer of both the Northern Lehigh Chamber and the Slatington Library, and is a past president of the Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce. Community Health Partner The goal of Bechtel’s Pharmacy is to serve the health concerns of the local communities. Ed Bechtel believes that “Our prescription department is a destination. You are not only getting your medication, but you are also able to tap into the knowledge of our pharmacists.” At Bechtel’s Pharmacy, very much a basic community pharmacy, filling prescriptions has been the main driver over the years. In the past few years, the pharmacy has expanded its offerings to include adult vaccinations, a medicine synchronization plan, and compliance packaging, making it a true community health and wellness partner. Bechtel’s Pharmacy and the Bechtel family have always made a commitment to the community where they live and work. In recognition of that the community has responded with their trust and support for a full 60 years.

How Stress Affects Your Body
SOURCE: everdayhealth.com (edited)
It’s one thing to feel occasional stress. But when you’re constantly under pressure and have no way to cope, your risk of developing serious illness climbs.
Chronic stress causes the release of the stress hormones cortisol, adrenaline and epinephrine that affect most areas of the body. Their presence can increase your risk of stroke, high blood pressure, and heart disease, as well as depression and anxiety. The good news about stress is that not all stress is bad. It’s also possible to manage stress by doing small things like deep breathing, taking a walk or meditating. The Stress Effect When you’re stressed, your heart rate goes up and so does your blood pressure. Most people can handle these kinds of physiological changes in stride. But even short-term stress can have a profound impact on your heart if it’s bad enough. Left unchecked, severe stress – the kind that continues for months or years – is more apt to lead Continued on page 18

Stress and your body Continued from page 16
to serious illness. Here are a few key ways chronic stress can impact the body. Stress causes inflammation. Studies have shown that chronic stress is linked to increased inflammation in the body, which is thought to underlie many diseases and even pain. The good news is that stress management techniques such as meditation have been shown to have antiinflammatory effects in the body. Stress affects your digestive tract. The gastrointestinal tract is filled with nerve endings and immune cells, all of which are affected by stress hormones. As a result, stress can cause acid reflux as well as exacerbate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. Stress messes with your immune system. A number of studies show that stress lowers immunity, which may be why you’re likely to come down with a cold after a crunch time at school or work.
18
Stress can muddle your brain. Even everyday kinds of stress can affect how the brain processes information. In research, experts have seen actual structural, functional, and connectivity-related brain changes in people who are under chronic stress, all of which can make it hard to focus or learn new things. Stress can make you feel crummy all over. Stress makes us more sensitive to pain, and it can also cause pain due to muscular tension. People who feel this overall effect of stress are also less likely to sleep well, which doesn’t help matters. Good sleep helps reboot the immune system and prevents depression, irritability, and exhaustion. While it’s difficult to link stress directly to a specific disease, it is known that stress does contribute to serious illness. Since stress makes you more likely to smoke, drink excessively, and eat in ways that cause obesity, it’s fair to say that there is a link between stress and disease. To combat your stress, try deep breathing, meditation and simple exercise, such as a good walk.

The Rise of Telemedicine
SOURCE: Consumer Electronics Show 2021
The meteoric rise of telemedicine is the health and wellness success story from 2020. As the old saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention and the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus leading to the COVID-19 pandemic, also led to the rapid adoption of telemedicine by both medical practitioners and patients. Telemedicine improves patient care through technology and in 2020 the telemedicine boom affected all parts of the healthcare system. Telemedicine allows the health industry to diagnose, advise and treat patients remotely. With a highly contagious disease infecting millions, people have been forced to stay home and telemedicine is the most prominent new tool to help doctors deliver their healthcare services. Veterans and Telemedicine As one example, data from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) illustrate how telemedicine has exploded during the pandemic. Figures from the VA show that telehealth video appointments using VA Video Connect increased 1,000 percent between February and May of 2020.

Telemedicine Continued from page 19
VA Video Connect allows Veterans and their caregivers to quickly and easily meet with VA health care providers through live video on any computer, tablet, or mobile device with an internet connection. This is especially helpful for Veterans who live far from their VA facility, have health conditions that make traveling to see a VA specialist difficult, lack the time to regularly attend in-person appointments or don’t require a hands-on physical examination. Additional Health-Monitoring Tools There are now nearly 500 additional in-home medical devices and wearables that allow medical providers continuous access to personal health data via telemedicine. These in-home medical devices capture biometric data from blood pressure monitors, blood glucose meters, heart rate monitors, connected scales, prescription compliance devices, pulse oximeters, sleep trackers and more. These new tools improve patient healthcare by continuously monitoring health data during a person’s daily life, not just at the point-in-time when they visit their doctor in the doctor’s office. AUGUST 5, 2021 || townandcountrygazette.com
As a result, medical providers have access to a more robust and comprehensive view of what’s happening in the patient’s life. When a point-in-time measurement is wanted, there’s a telemedicine remote-monitoring tool called MedWand that can be used to connect to a smartphone or tablet so physicians can remotely check vital signs and other health parameters. With those capabilities doctors can examine their patients anywhere over the Internet. In the end, technology will not replace the in-person doctor’s visit, but it will enhance the services the medical community can offer.

Keep a water bottle filled and nearby throughout the day. It will remind you to keep sipping! Infuse water with fruit for flavor and variety / If plain water doesn’t excite you, you can buy a naturally flavored water, or do it yourself with an infuser-style water bottle. Generally they have an insert to hold your choice of fruit and other ingredients. Lemon, cucumber, mint, and strawberries are all popular choices. Choose a water bottle that suits you / These days, your water bottle can do everything from tracking your water intake to syncing with your FitBit. Whether you prefer a flip-top or a straw, slim or wide, glass, plastic or aluminum, the possibilities are endless. Choosing a water bottle you like means you’re more likely to keep it close to hand. High Water Content Food Another way to hit your daily hydration goal is to eat foods that have high water content naturally. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are plenty of fruits and vegetables that are close to 100 percent water by weight. Incorporating these foods into your diet will give you both nutrients and a hydration boost. One thing to remember is that the fruit and vegetables will lose water if cooked, so it is best to eat them raw whenever possible. Here are just AUGUST 5, 2021 || townandcountrygazette.com
a few ideas for incorporating some of the most hydrating foods into your diet. Replace Chips with Cucumber Slices At 95 percent water, a cucumber is one of the most hydrating options available. Try using cucumbers in place of chips the next time you reach for the dip or hummus. Celery Ups Your Water Intake Celery is very hydrating. If celery sticks are too boring to eat on their own, try stuffing them with peanut butter or tuna salad. Continued on page 24

Summer Water Safety Tips

Stay Hydrated Continued from page 23
Use Watermelon in a Salad Watermelon is high in water content and low in calories. This refreshing summertime fruit works well in many summer salads. Look for recipes online. Cantaloupe and Strawberries Cantaloupe is another hydrating melon that is also a decent source of potassium, which is important to hydration; it’s an electrolyte that helps the body balance its water content. Strawberries are a good source of vitamin C and are also 91% water, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Both are great in summer salads and desserts. Other Hydrating Options Iceberg Lettuce: Use in salads, as a sandwich wrap, or as the “bun” for your next burger. Tomatoes: No matter how you slice them, they have 94% water content. Bell Peppers: Diced they add crunch to salads and salsa, sliced they’re an alternative to chips.
Knowing what you’re doing and staying safe around water, especially during the summer recreation season is critically important. We visited redcross.org to gather some key water safety tips to share with you in this issue. After you read this article, please see the link to the full redcross.org article at the end of this story – it contains very valuable water safety information to keep you and your loved ones safe around water this summer season and throughout the year. Why Is Water Safety So Important? It only takes a moment. A child or weak swimmer can drown in the time it takes you to reply to a text, check a fishing line or apply sunscreen. Death and injury from drownings happen every day in home pools and hot tubs, at the beach or in oceans, lakes, rivers and streams, bathtubs, and even buckets. NOTE: Drowning is a leading cause of death for children The Red Cross believes that by working together to improve water competency – which includes swimming skills, water smarts and helping others – water activities can be safer, and just as much fun. Achieving Water Safety Ensure every member of your family learns how to swim so they at least achieve skills of water competency: the ability to enter the water, get a breath, stay afloat, change position, swim a distance and then get out of the water safely. Employ layers of protection including barriers to prevent access to water, life jackets, and close supervision of children to prevent drowning. Know what to do in a water emergency – including how to help someone in trouble in the water safely, call for emergency help and CPR. What is Water Competency? Water competency is a way of improving water Continued on page 26

safety for yourself and those around you through avoiding common dangers, developing fundamental water safety skills to make you safer in and around the water, and knowing how to prevent and respond to drowning emergencies. Water competency has 3 main components: water smarts, swimming skills and helping others. Water Smarts Take these sensible precautions when you’re around water (even if you’re not planning to swim): • Know your limitations, including physical fitness and medical conditions. • Never swim alone; swim with lifeguards and/ or water watchers present. • Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket appropriate for your weight and size and the water activity. Always wear a life jacket while boating, regardless of swimming skill. • Swim sober. • Understand the dangers of hyperventilation and hypoxic blackout. • Know how to call for help.
26
• Understand and adjust for the unique risks of the water environment you are in, such as: -River currents. -Ocean rip currents. -Water temperature. -Shallow or unclear water. -Underwater hazards, such as vegetation and animals. Swimming Skills Learn how to perform these 5 skills in every type of water environment that you may encounter (such as in home pools, oceans, lakes, rivers and streams): • Enter water that’s over your head, then return to the surface. • Float or tread water for at least 1 minute. • Turn over and turn around in the water. • Swim at least 25 yards. • Exit the water.

Healthy Road Trip Snacks SOURCE: everydayhealth.com (edited)
For your next road trip, ditch the potato chips and gummy bears, and instead consider these dietician-recommended options we found at everydayhealth.com: 1: Jerky / Dried meat with seasoning is a roadtrip favorite, but today you have more options than just beef jerky. You can also get turkey and salmon jerky, as well as mushroom and other plant-based jerky free of animal products. 2: Blueberries / In the summertime, blueberries are a smart choice for the road. One cup contains only about 85 calories and less than ½ gram of fat. Pack them in the cooler to keep them fresh for the long drive. 3: Snack-Sized Cheese / You can freeze these if you need them to last an entire day of travel, otherwise they’ll be fine for about two hours, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Low-moisture part-skim mozzarella cheese is a great travel choice.
4: Fresh Veggie Strips / For a low-calorie nutritious snack, consider fresh sliced veggies like bell pepper strips, carrots, celery, and cucumbers. Red bell peppers, for one, are an excellent source of vitamin C. Stash them in a cooler so they stay cool and crisp. 5: Grapes / In addition to being a healthy snack, grapes travel well and are easy to pack. Wash and store them in a bag or covered container and they will be ready to eat. One caveat: If you’re packing snacks for small children, whole grapes can be a choking hazard, so you may want to either cut them into sections or choose something else. 6: Nuts / Nuts are nutrient dense, but they’re calorie dense as well, so keep an eye on serving sizes. For example, one serving of almonds (about 1/4 cup, or 23 nuts, according to Harvard Health Publishing) may range from 160 to 200 calories. 7: Nut Butter Packets / Nut butters come in several varieties such almond, cashew, peanut and walnut. When prepackaged into pouches, nut butter can travel well; just knead and squeeze. As with whole nuts, enjoy nut butter in moderation, as it is dense in fat and calories. 8: Dried Fruit / You have tons of options when choosing dried fruit to mix for your road trip. It doesn’t take a lot of room and it’s not messy. If you’re looking for the best bang for your nutritional buck, research suggests using dates or figs in you mix. Keep in mind that sugar and fiber is more concentrated in dried fruit, so be mindful of portion sizes. Continued on page 29

Go easy on the salt and consider using hearthealthy oil instead of butter.
9: Popcorn / It is easy to make your own prepackaged bags of air-popped popcorn. It’s a whole grain and the USDA reports that 2 cups of unsalted air-popped popcorn have almost 2.5 grams of fiber, which can help you feel full longer.
10: Trail Mix / If you’re making your own trail mix, one expert recommends a balanced mix of three foods: whole grains, dried fruit, and nuts and seeds. Pick one item from each category and blend.
Shortage continues this Summer due to increased Demand for blood submitted by Lisa Landis
The American Red Cross has an emergency need for lifesaving blood amid the ongoing severe blood shortage. Blood donations continue to be critical to meet hospital demand and the public is urged to make an appointment to give now. The Red Cross has been distributing about 12% more blood products to hospitals across the U.S. compared to this time last year. The Red Cross needs to collect more than 1,000 additional blood donations each day to meet the current hospital demand and end the severe blood shortage. Donors of all blood types are needed, especially type O, which stands at just a one-day supply right now. AUGUST 5, 2021 || townandcountrygazette.com
To thank donors who help ensure a strong blood and platelet supply in August, all who come to give Aug. 1-15, 2021, will automatically be entered for a chance to win an exclusive, VIP trip for two to the sold-out 2021 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Those who come to donate throughout August will also receive a free 4-month subscription offer to Apple Music by email (new subscribers only). More details are available at RedCrossBlood. org/FeelTheBeat. Donors who give now will help stock the shelves as we wind down the summer Continued on page 30

About blood donation To donate blood, individuals need to bring a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification that are required at checkin. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements. Donors can also save up to 15 minutes at the blood drive by completing a RapidPass®. With RapidPass®, donors complete the pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of donation, from a mobile device or computer. To complete a RapidPass®, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Red Cross Blood Donor App. Blood drive safety The Red Cross has updated its pandemic safety protocols in alignment with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Fully vaccinated individuals, including staff and donors, no longer need to wear masks or socially distance. Unvaccinated individuals continue to be required to wear masks and socially distance. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive.

There were five of us boys at home. There were also our parents, Henry [A hired hand?], and often a maid. So there were nine at the table for meals. It took a lot to feed a nine-member family. Often the food was simple, just one large bowl full for the whole family, perhaps a large soup or a plate of fried food. We always began with bread and ‘spreddins’ [Butter, jelly or anything spread on bread.], and after that you served yourself from the main plate. We never went away from the table hungry. We ate three times a day: In the morning we had breakfast; at noon we had dinner; and evenings 36
we had supper. If we were well we were there when it came time to eat; if we missed, something was wrong, we were sick or crabby or we overslept. After eating we all went to work. The women put the food away. Often there was not much to put away. Still there were the plates, the glasses, the knives, the spoons, the forks and the empty serving dishes to wash. All the dinnerware was washed with hot water and soap and dried and put away for the next time the next time that one ate. The men worked outside. There was always much to do for the big and the little folks. The big ones went out and picked and pulled the items out and brought them in for the market. Among them were red beets, red and white radishes, beans, onions and still other items that were ready to harvest. Fridays we all worked on the premises. We needed to wash the items for the market place, and tie them in little bundles and pack them away. We were preparing for the market thusly when Henry came with an armful of cut flowers. Henry said, “I saw something! A hummingbird came, when I was cutting flowers. It had a nest on a branch in the orchard. I found the nest there. It looked just like a knot on a branch. It was built from cob webs and covered with bits of bark and moss. One could never imagine that this would be a nest, but two little white eggs lay in it, so large as a pea. Just as Henry was unloading, a wren flew out of the wagon-tongue where it had built a nest News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || AUGUST 5, 2021
and sang merrily for us. Henry said, “Hear that, boy can it ever sing! The humming birds can’t sing but their wings flutter so swiftly that one cannot see them, and they can stay stationary in the air or fly quickly, also backwards. How nature is still wonderful.” At the same time a chipmunk came out from under the shop with both cheeks full to carry to his nest. Mom saw him and said, “Look at that, how he has his cheeks full, where will he go with that?” But she had no need to wonder for long. Our large cat also saw him. The chipmunk also looked her over carefully. The cat didn’t make any sound that anyone could hear. Quietly she made a big round arched back and leaped on the top of the chipmunk. Faster than one could write it or say it, it was over.
[Noah G. Good (1904 – 2002) published Dutch articles in the Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage, the quarterly journal of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society from 1978 till at least 1997. This article appeared in the July 1996 issue under the title: Wilde uf die Bauerei (Wildlife on the farm).]
LAUGH OUT LOUD
The cat walked away from it with the chipmunk in its mouth, purred a little and went away where she could quietly eat it. Soon the cat came back to mom lay herself down next to her. Mom stroked her with her hand and said, “That you should not have done. We feed you. You must not catch and eat such a nice chipmunk.” The cat purred loudly and pleasantly. She was not concerned over young chipmunks needing to go hungry. How nature is still so wonderful even though one is able to understand much of it poorly. AUGUST 5, 2021 || townandcountrygazette.com

Slatington Library News submitted by Louise Bechtel
The Slatington Library is open for those looking for books and/or computer use. We ask that anyone who is not vaccinated to please wear a mask. For those who are vaccinated we do recommend wearing a mask, but they are optional. Join Mrs. George from Peter’s Elementary School, NLSD, on the library’s website (slatingtonlibrary.org) as she reads “The Koala who Could”, “The Couch Potato,” “Monstergarten” and “Dragon Loves Tacos.”. Check out the website throughout the summer for more stories. Like us on Facebook. The library is looking for a new board member from Washington Township. If you are interested in helping to guide the library into the future, please contact us at 610-767-6461. There will be a basket social this year! The library will once again host its annual basket social. It will take place on Saturday, October 2nd at the Slatedale Fire Co. social hall. We are looking for donations of handcrafted items, gift certificates and gift baskets with a value of at least $25.00. Donations can be dropped off at the library. If you have requested a library card, from our library, on line, we ask that you please stop by the library and pick-up your card. who do not have a local library. From now until the end of the year, 2022, the membership fee to join our library will be reduced to $15.00, a 25% reduction. Most communities have free membership because they help support their local library. Everyone should take advantage of the many services that a library provides. Join your public library. The “Elevator” has hit a temporary snag due to trying to fit a new device into an old building. We are reevaluating our options and are hopeful there is a solution. Please stand by. You can sign-up for a library card in our online catalog and select e-books and audio books from the Carbon Lehigh Downloadable Library. Both links are on our web page.
5th year anniversary of Making mats for Homeless veterans Submitted by GLORIA KOCH
This month is the fifth anniversary of our group making mats out of plastic grocery bags for homeless veterans. I would like to thank all those who have helped over the years. We’ve had over 60 people donate their time in some way in the process and countless others that have donated their colored bags. We began in July 2016, crocheting the mats with each mat using over 600 plastic bags. There are a total of 14 steps from preparation to completing a mat. In 2018, we had a loom made and started weaving the mats. Weaving uses approximately 450 bags and allows for multiple people to work on the same mat at the same time. Over the past five years we were able to donate 135 mats, sold four and donated two for fundraisers. In 2016, we donated 10 crocheted mats to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Allentown. In 2017, we donated another 10 mats to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Allentown, 15 mats to the Bethlehem Emergency Shelter and 12 to help people in Florida after the flood. In 2018, 36 mats were given to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Allentown. Several people wanted to buy the mats, so we were able to sell four and used the funds to purchase 50 Lanta Bus passes, 10 Dunkin Donuts and eight WaWa gift cards, which were also 44
donated to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Allentown. In November of 2018, we had an opportunity to help the Northampton High School DECA Club make three mats for Project Kids Hope 4 the Valley, a Community Service Project and later donated them to the Allentown Rescue Mission. The project was supervised by Lauren Schaller and Abby Piotrowski, and made with the help of many DECA Club members and school faculty. The DECA Project was entered in a state competition held at Hershey Lodge and won third place. In 2019, 32 mats were donated to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Allentown. And in 2020, we were able to complete 20 mats prior to stopping due to the pandemic, which were donated to the Valor Clinic Foundation in Kunkletown. Prior to the pandemic, we met every second and fourth Monday of the month at Benders Mennonite Church 975 Benders Church Road in Pen Argyl to prep the bags and every second and fourth Wednesday to weave at the Klecknersville Fire Hall. We reactivated the group earlier this year and have been meeting at Mountain View Wesleyan the first and third Wednesday to prep, and the second and fourth Wednesday to weave. We recently made a donation to the Wounded Warriors with the proceeds from six mats purchased at Lattemann’s Corner Store, where we currently have nine on display for sale. Mats are 6’ x 4’ and great for the beach, camping, hunting and sports events with all proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project. Lattemann’s is also a drop off point for colored grocery bags. We were recently contacted by a chaplain that works with Veterans in Philadelphia who requested 25 mats. We now have three frames and with our current volunteers, we are able to complete two mats every time we meet for weaving. We welcome teenagers, men and seniors to help. Many steps can be done at home so if you’re not able to come out on a Wednesday there are still ways you can help. We will continue to make the mats as long as we have plastic bags and veterans in need. We meet every and first and third Wednesday from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. to prep bags to weave them on the second and fourth Wednesdady from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Mountain View Wesleyan Church at 1001 Deemer Road, Bath. For more information contact Gloria at the church 610-759-7553; please leave a message and she will call you back or just stop over on a Wednesday when we are weaving at the church to see the work in progress. I have enjoyed the fellowship and making the mats with you all. God Bless everyone who has helped with this project. News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || AUGUST 5, 2021

The hardest thing for a parent is to lose a child, in our case we lost 2. Our lives changed forever when you were called home 39 years ago, and recently your brother Robby was called to be with you. Not a day goes by that we don’t think of you. We miss your smirky smile, your crazy side and the stunts you used to pull, but I’m sure you and Robby are still wreaking havoc. We miss you so much!! How to work AND home school your child By A. Barrella, Advanced Tutor at Reading Escapades and Math Explorers
People are always telling us that they would like to home school their children but they work, so they can’t. If that is you, take a moment to really think about it. You need to do what you think is best both for your children and for you. If you really and truly want to home school your child but you are under the impression that you can’t because of a job, then read on! We can help you do this! One solution for many parents is working parttime or working different shifts. This works well because at least one parent is always home. If your hours aren’t as flexible you still have options. One option is to hire a tutor to work with your children. Another is to find local co-ops to enroll them in. We provide ono-on-one tutoring as well as home school assistance here at Reading Escapades and Math Explorers. Here are some more tips to create a successful work life as well as a home school life: • Really think about what you want to do and why. • Create a mission statement for your home
school, make it and hang it up where you can see it every day. • Find a to-do app on the computer/phone/ paper that you can actually stick to using! • Get routines. Once a routine is set, then it becomes second nature. Don’t do too much at once – only 1 or 2 habits at a time until they are set. • Embrace that learning can happen all the time! Not just during “school hours” of 8-2! If you need ideas on things to do with your children, or if you want one-on-one coaching for your child this summer, check out our website at www.read2day.com or call us at 610-826-READ.

The event is free (donations always welcome!), but there may be fees for the wine tasting. Bottles also available for sale. Eliza Rush is an independent singer/songwriter who performs reimagined versions of familiar favorites along with great music from artists lesser known. Throw in some originals and you've got an assortment of music you won't forget. Originally from Canada, Eliza has always had a passion for singing, and using music to bring people together to awaken possibility, touch and transform lives. She is joined by exceptional musicians who share her affection for creativity and collaboration and her desire to serve others. She can be heard in and around the Lehigh Valley performing solo acoustic, as part of a duo or trio, or with her full band. Sleepy Cat Urban Winery, located in the heart of the Theater District in the West End of Allentown, is owned and operated by Mark and Carrie Gerencher. The event is free, however donations are always welcome! Midnight Special Band was formed back in 1988. It was founded by brothers Dennis and Dean Rehrig. a fiddle player and also squeezed the accordion. Dennis and Dean, along with their father, were original members of the Rehrig Family Band along with Dennis’s twin brother David. In 1979, Dennis, Dean and David decided to change the name of the band to Twitty Fever. David was the lead singer who had great passion for the music of Conway Twitty. Twitty Fever was a four-piece band rounded out with Jim Baldwin on bass guitar and harmony vocals. In 1988, Dennis and Dean decided to leave Twitty Fever and begin Midnight Special Band. Since 1988, Midnight Special Band has gone through many changes. But, one thing has remained the same: love of music. The love of country music by the Rehrig Family continues to be the foundation of Midnight Special Band. HiJinx Brewing Company was born out of a fierce passion for great beer. The HiJinx crew’s dedication to quality and their willingness to experiment make for some tasty and unique beers. From the traditional to the exotic, their passion for beer knows no limits. The concept for HiJinx began in 2007 when the founder, Curt Keck, was brewing up a batch of homebrew and imbibing in his garage with some friends. One of the group suggested that he open up a brewery to share the
product of his passion with the masses. After some coaxing and a few more pints Curt agreed and said that the brewery needed a name. He insisted that the brewery have a name that spoke to the HiJinx that took place in his garage. There was a simultaneous eureka expression on the faces of everyone present… and HiJinx was born.
