Thinking of Winter By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of winter? Winter weather? Winter comfort food? How about holiday gift ideas under $20? Maybe you think of the way neighbors being good neighbors impacts the quality of your neighborhood in a very positive way (that would actually apply spring, summer, fall and winter). Or what about winter photography – is that on 255E South Best Ave. Walnutport, PA 18088

your mind? For some, being indoors all winter seems unproductive – but it doesn’t have to be! In this “winter” issue, we take a look at all of these things. Comfort food is important all year round, but it may be most important in the winter when we want to feel that extra warmth in the belly even more. Check out “Winter Comfort Food” for two delicious recipes you just may have to try! One recipe is vegan and one is non-vegan. Sometimes winter comfort food seems especially appropriate when there is a “raging nor’easter” going on outside and you just want to be all cozy and warm indoors. In “The Great Nor’easters” we’re going to give you a crash course on how they develop and even a little history on some of the great Nor’easters of all time. Not only ‘tis it the season for potential Nor’easters, but it’s also the gift-buying season for the holidays ahead. In an ideal world we could buy every gift our loved ones desire, but I, for one, have a budget. Maybe you do too. That’s why we Continued on page 4

But you don’t have to be a gardener to do some of the fun and productive projects you’ll find in “Making the Most of Winter Indoors.” Check it out to find activity inspiration for your time indoors over the next few months. Even though we will be indoors more over the
next few months, don’t let that keep you from being a neighbor helping neighbors. In “Helping Your Neighbors This Winter” we give you some really workable ideas on how to keep the neighborhood connections going through the coldest months ahead. Maybe you have an elderly neighbor who would so appreciate your bringing their morning paper from the driveway to the front door. We’ve got some ideas for you. Lastly, in “Getting Ready for Winter Photography” we have winter photography tips aimed at new photogs, but also those “brushing up” for the winter photography season. We hope you enjoy it! The Great Nor’easters SOURCE: weather.gov (edited)
A Nor’easter is a storm along the East Coast of North America, so called because the winds over the coastal area are typically from the northeast. These storms may occur at any time of year but are most frequent and most violent between September and April. Some well-known Nor’easters include the notorious Blizzard of 1888, the “Ash Wednesday” storm of March 1962, the New England Blizzard of February 1978, the March 1993 “Superstorm” and the Boston snowstorms of January and February 2015. Past Nor’easters have been responsible for billions of dollars in damage, severe economic, transportation and human disruption, and in some cases, disastrous coastal flooding. Damage from the worst storms can exceed a billion dollars. Where They Develop Nor’easters usually develop in the latitudes between Georgia and New Jersey, within 100 miles east or west of the East Coast. These storms progress generally northeastward and typically attain maximum intensity near New England and the Maritime Provinces of Canada. They nearly always bring precipitation in the form of heavy rain or snow, as well as gale force winds, rough seas, and, occasionally, coastal flooding to the affected regions. The heavily populated region between Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York and Boston, the “I-95 Corridor,” is especially impacted by Nor’easters.
The Perfect Breeding Ground The U.S. East Coast provides an ideal breeding ground for Nor’easters. During winter, the polar jet stream transports cold Arctic air southward across the plains of Canada and the United States, then eastward toward the Atlantic Ocean where warm air from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic tries to move northward. The warm waters of the Gulf Stream help keep the coastal waters relatively mild during the winter, which in turn helps warm the cold winter air over the water. This difference in temperature between the warm air over the water and cold Arctic air over the land is the fuel that feeds Nor’easters. When weather forecasters at National Weather Service (NWS) local forecast offices and at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction near Washington, D.C. see conditions are favorable in the upcoming days, forecasters may issue winter storm, blizzard, high wind and coastal flood watches to alert the public. These watches let the public know that some of the worst effects of Nor’easters might be possible. If the storm is about to happen, those watches are changed to warnings.

Getting Prepared If a Nor’easter threatens your home town, take steps to prepare, such as having three days of food, water and other provisions in a disaster supplies kit. A Nor’easter could cut power and leave you in the dark. Also, sit down with your family and create an emergency communications plan so your loved ones know how to stay in touch if you are separated. Very importantly, stay off the roads if advised by local authorities and never drive into flood waters. These simple actions will help you stay safe during a Nor’easter.

Making the Most of Winter Indoors SOURCE: Various
With winter ahead, we’ll soon be spending more time indoors probably hunkered down at home. In addition to reading more and catching up on favorite movies and perhaps eating more, it’s also the perfect time to tackle some fun and meaningful projects. Here are some ideas: For the Gardener The focus of gardening is almost exclusively outdoors. If you’re a gardener, winter is not your peak season for planting and harvesting flowers or vegetables. That said there are plenty of indoor winter activities for gardeners. For instance, you can start planning your spring garden, order some seeds from catalogs and if you have the space, get some of them planted and started indoors before spring. If you have houseplants, monitor their health during the winter. Check them often for pests, fertilize if growing or blooming and repot ones that are root bound and dry out quickly. For those that may be getting leggy, propagate from cuttings.

Simply cut four to six inches, remove the lower leaves, and place each stem base in a medium such as perlite, vermiculite, or a combination. Cover them with a plastic bag to keep humidity inside, keep out of direct sunlight and check often to make sure they are not too dry or too wet inside. Rearrange and Refresh Your Space This winter may be a perfect time to look at your home with a new perspective. For example, consider rearranging your furniture to help maximize your space, or to take better advantage of natural light. Move a wall hanging or painting from one room to another or invest in a cozy new throw blanket. Sometimes minor changes can make a big difference. Declutter, Declutter, Declutter More time indoors means more time to get rid of clutter around your entire home – from your bedroom closets to the garage. Work room by room, pulling out items and organizing them into piles to keep, throw away / recycle, or donate. Once decluttered, put remaining items back into place mindfully, possibly using new storage solutions that will suit your lifestyle in the coming year.

Try a Digital Deep Cleaning This is a wonderful idea. The winter can offer you a great chance to give your digital life a fresh start. If you’ve spent more time than ever on your electronics in the last year, now could be the perfect time for a digital deep cleaning. Consider updating the software on your phone or computer. Go through your system and delete old photos or files, exporting what you need to a separate hard drive or virtual cloud service. Consider doing a security check and updating your passwords, or trying out a new password management tool. Clear out your email inbox and favorites bar. There will be a real sense of regaining some control over your digital life if you do this. Go Through Non-Digital Photos and Files While you declutter and organize, set aside some time to do the same with old photos, files, and documents. Consider organizing your photos into an album, or making a scrapbook to save some of your most precious pictures and keepsakes. In some instances, you may also want to look into digitizing files, photos and home videos to preserve them forever without taking up the physical storage space.

Helping Your Neighbors this Winter
SOURCE: Various
While winter is typically a time to hunker down and hibernate, it’s also a time that can be hard on our neighbors and their homes. Whether it’s fallen tree branches, a driveway that needs shoveling, or a frozen pipe emergency, neighbors helping neighbors cultivates trust and a closer-knit community. And there’s no better time to help neighbors than during the winter. Ideas for Helping Neighbors During Winter: • Host a soup night: This is a great way to connect with neighbors during the winter. It can be done indoors, or as a bundled-up, sociallydistanced porch or yard party depending on the weather. It can even be something of a potluck. For neighbors who would like to pitch in, invite
14
them to bring their favorite soup, while maybe another neighbor can bring fresh baked bread, and so forth. It’s a great way for a winter social event and also an opportunity to catch up on things going on in the neighborhood. If soup isn’t your thing, make a pot of chili! • Helping older neighbors: Older neighbors particularly would likely appreciate a car de-icing, driveway snow shoveling, or even something as simple as bringing the mail or newspaper to their doorstep. • Check on them! When the pavement or front steps get icy, slipping and falling can happen to anyone – elderly or not. When you walk or drive by, take an extra moment to look over and make sure everything seems in order.
News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || DECEMBER 2, 2021
• Branches or debris: When you can, help clear it, loan tools, or organize a work party to help take care of each other’s needs. Working with others makes projects more fun and they go more quickly. • Make a plan to help: When you hear that a storm is coming, reach out to neighbors you know the best and get a plan together for helping each other and other neighbors once the storm hits. • Share your salt! Rock salt is a good thing to have on hand, and if you know your neighbors need some for their icy spots, toss a few handfuls their way, or offer to pick up a bag for them. • Connect for a conversation: When it’s dark early, and people aren’t out and about as much, winter can become a lonely season. A phone call or a knock on the door with some cookies and hot chocolate can be just the remedy. Sometimes simply showing up and talking can make a world of difference. Whether it’s you helping neighbors during winter by shoveling their snow or it’s them helping you in summer by watering your plants while you’re away – good, trustworthy neighbors are worth Complementary their weight in gold. Getting Ready for Winter Photography
SOURCE: theviennablog.com (edited)
Taking good-quality photos isn’t easy and doing it in the winter just makes it a bit more difficult. Fingers freeze, camera batteries die, and everything looks boringly white. You will encounter many obstacles taking photos in the coldest months. Here are a few quick and easy tips that will help smooth the adventure. Despite wintery weather, be sure and take your camera or smartphone wherever you decide to go. Correct Gear is Most Important Extreme conditions are hard for sensitive electronics including photography equipment. Carry a flash with you if it’s not part of your camera and for snowfall shots having a stand is a must. Remember that you usually can’t set your
16
camera on the ground because it’s wet and snowy. If your camera also lets you film videos, try that between photography sessions. Last but not least, dress appropriately to stay warm while waiting for the perfect shot, and take a thermos with a hot beverage to keep you hydrated. Pre-plan or Always Carry a Camera There are two ways to go about winter photography: plan the photoshoots beforehand or always have a camera with you. Scenery changes quickly in winter so if you discover a good spot, visit it again with a camera as soon as possible. Someone playing in the snow or admiring the snowfall is perfect winter photo material. Understand “White Balance” A white winter scene sounds like a dream, but may quickly become a problem. It’s hard to take photos of a place that is almost completely white. Learn a bit about using your camera’s whitebalance settings before leaving for your winter photo adventure. Capture the Christmas Spirit Winter isn’t all about the breath-taking scenery. Christmas and the time preceding it, is the perfect season for winter photography. There are almost endless possibilities. Colorful Christmas lights are a good place to start when you want to capture News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || DECEMBER 2, 2021
the real holiday season atmosphere. Be Ready When it Snows If you want to capture snowfall that means you have to be ready when it happens. Taking photos of snowfall is fairly hard, but not impossible. You have to learn to use shutter speed to take better snowfall photos. Try slow shutter speed to capture a blurry snowfall, or use fast shutter speed to capture snow frozen mid-air. Always use a tripod or secure surface for your camera. Otherwise, the falling snow won’t show up clearly in your photos. Shoot Winter Photography Inside Winter photography doesn’t all have to be taken outdoors. Plan indoor photoshoots with your friends, or find other places where you can take pictures inside. Museums that allow photography usually have a lot of interesting possibilities for photographers, especially those just starting out. Other ideas: take photos of food, animals or the view outside your window. If you’re shooting pictures outside, sooner or later you have to go inside to warm-up and it’s important that you don’t put your camera down even at that time. Capture your steaming cup of hot chocolate or your best friend’s red cheeks.

Touch of Dutch Continued from page 19
On Christmas, Belsnickel comes by, How happy the children are! It could be that Birmelin was happy because the Belsnickel and Santa Claus were already rather one and the same. Willard M. George called his poem "The Belsnickel," but in his poem you don't see the word "Belsnickel" one time. He writes: What is that? Who's driving on my grass? Then I open the window, And there was Santa Claus! But it was not always so! Henry Harbaugh can tell us how the children saw Belsnickel early on in the nineteenth century: Oh, do you know that ugly, that nasty man? Wow! Can you call that fellow a human being? Yes, that he is a human may be believed by whoever wants to, He looks to me too much like the devil!
Just look at his eyes, his nose—wow! He opens and closes his mouth like shears; A tail like an ox, yes, that he has, right? And a hairy pelt like the bears. If he comes into your house, there'll be noise enough, He seeks out the bad children! And if he finds one, he gets right to the point, And beats very badly the sinners. He stands himself there with that terrible(?)rod, And grumbles his threatening speech; The children suddenly become very good And begin to pray mightily! If one of them, as is sometimes the case, was right mischievous; Wanted to mock his mother's whip; I bet he won't laugh at Belsnickel's whip; He quickly begs for good weather. Now Belsnickel shakes his bag vigorously, Out fall the cakes and chestnuts; Whoever is good can pick them up; whoever is bad, then whack! He flogs him thoroughly. From the Belsnickel I have now learned something, This I will never forget: After you sow, then in the harvest The fruit of your work is meted out! Take care, The Old Professor

Lehigh Township Historical Society News Submitted by Ruth Hall Kent
The Lehigh Township Historical Society would like to wish our community a very happy and safe holiday season for 2021. We have a number of interesting books about our area in our Historical Centre store that would make great gifts, including the Images of America book about Indian Trail and Edgemont Parks as well as the one about Lehigh Township. If you want to purchase any of our books or other unique items from our gift shop, we will be open on Tuesday, December 7th from 9 am to Noon. If not available then, please give us a call to make arrangements for your purchase. Our annual membership drive is under way and we remind all of our current supporters to send in their renewal form included in our newsletter when you receive it. For any others interested in becoming a supporting member, please visit our website at www.lehightownshiphistoricalsociety. org and download the form to complete and mail in with payment. On November 15th a group of Cub Scouts from Pack 242 in Cherryville visited the St. Paul’s OneRoom Schoolhouse in Indianland along with their leaders and many parents. The visitors were given information about the history of the school and
learned about what attending school, in a one-room school, was like more than 70 years ago. St. Paul’s schoolhouse interior is modeled to reflect a classroom of the 1930’s. Many of the artifacts were discovered by the scouts doing a scavenger hunt around the room. Visiting the school, which is a local historical building, met the requirements for a badge they were working on. Fun was had by all. A reminder to scout troops and other small groups to call and set up a special visit to the Schoolhouse or Historical Centre Museum. We have several activities and a short program for our young visitors. If you have never visited, you will be surprised with all of the memorabilia of yesteryear that we have on display! LTHS is always accepting items for the museum. If you are planning to visit or stop by with any items to donate, please call first as the weather and snow in our parking area may force us to be closed. Starting in the new year, we will be open on Tuesday mornings from 9 am to Noon (except the 2nd Tuesday of each month). Again, LTHS wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas and very Happy New Year!

(61 Northern Lehigh Rec. 2022 Annual Campaign Underway submitted by Lindsay L. Taylor
The Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority’s 2022 Annual Campaign to raise funds for the Authority’s upcoming year of programs and services is underway. NLRA’s mission is to provide a diverse range of educational and recreational programs, events and activities that promote a strong sense of community. The Authority receives annual contributions from Slatington Borough and Washington Township, but it is not enough to cover the costs of the many free and low cost programs that are provided to residents of Northern Lehigh, including concerts, events such as the Food Truck Festival, Trunk or Treat and the Candy Cane Hunt, the Bulldog Blast Summer Rec, Program and many other community programs. Residents interested in supporting NLRA’s effort to improve the quality of life in Northern Lehigh are encouraged to read and respond to the 2022 Annual Campaign request that they will receive in the mail or to go to NLRA’s website, www. northernlehighrec.org, and click on the Donate button. 24

Slatington Awarded Grant for Slate Heritage Trail submitted by Tracy Polovick
Rep. Zach Mako (R-Lehigh/Northampton) and Sen. Pat Browne (R-Lehigh) today announced a $105,488 grant has been awarded to Slatington Borough for repair of Slate Heritage Trail. Mako and Browne advocated for the funding through the Commonwealth Financing Authority’s Greenway, Trails and Recreation Program, which funds projects for planning, acquisition, development, rehabilitation and repair of greenways, recreational trails, open spaces and parks. “One of Slatington’s treasures is its trail and access to the Lehigh River,” Mako said. “By rehabilitating the trail, this will encourage more recreational opportunities which improve the health and wellness of both residents and visitors. With more people staying close to home in the past couple of years, the areas that need improvement became News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || DECEMBER 2, 2021

I look forward to taking my dog, Winston, for a walk on the trail once the project is complete.” “Our region’s extensive trail network continues to provide residents with tremendous outdoor recreational opportunities, improving the quality of life in our region,” Browne said. “I am pleased to have worked with Rep. Mako to help ensure that Slatington has the funds necessary to maintain and restore its portion of this incredible network.” The grant will be used to rehabilitate and restore the trail that connects to the Slatington Trailhead, which is part of the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, and links to the Walnutport Canal towpath, the Appalachian Trail and the Lehigh Gap Nature Center. More specifically, the project will repair the trail surface, make improvements to drainage, re-deck the trestle bridge, extend the safety fence and repair the covered bridge parking area. The 183rd District includes South Whitehall (part), Washington and Whitehall (part) townships and Slatington Borough in Lehigh County. It also consists of Allen, Lehigh and Moore (part) townships, and North Catasauqua, Northampton and Walnutport boroughs in Northampton County. DECEMBER 2, 2021 || townandcountrygazette.com

He was very proud of his children Rebecca and Russell Jr. Ron and Hali Kuntz, lifelong residents of the Northern Lehigh area, donated $1000 to the library as they continue their support and involvement in the community. Retired from 30 years at Mack Trucks, Ron keeps busy as Chairman of the Walnutport Water Authority and operating NL Team Sales along with Hali. In the past, Ron served as President of the Slatington Skeet Club and the former Slatington Booster Club. Hali retired from teaching as a secondary mathematics teacher at NL Middle School in 2014. Her involvement with the Slatington Public Library is vast including serving as a Board of Director since 2012, Assistant Treasurer, Pre-school Story Hour Teacher, and currently facilitating the Library’s Monthly Book Club meetings. In addition, Hali has been a member of the Women’s Club of Slatington since 1982. Residing in Walnutport and their second home in Ocean City, MD, Ron and Hali truly do “bleed blue and white” as their friends often say and the Library appreciates their generosity. Honored with two $1000 donations is Slatington Public Library’s treasurer Lynne Fedorcha. Firstly, Lynne’s immediate family – husband Gary, children Kori (husband Frank), Kyle (wife Marci), and Cody (wife Jenna), and grandchildren Tyler, Franki, Kyle, Derek, Aaron, Sophie, and Elise – love her passion and commitment to the beloved library; therefore, the donation deemed worthy. Simple Ways to Unlock A Frozen Car Door Lock www.lockupservices.ca
Car owners know fully well that winter can bring about a whole host of problems. There are a literally dozens of things that can go wrong with a car during winter, from stalled engines to hazardous performance on the road, and more. Although not quite as dangerous as other problems, having a car door lock freeze on you certainly ranks on the list as one of the more annoying occurrences. In the event they are already frozen, there are a number of proven remedies for that as well. Preventing your car door lock from freezing Place a magnet over the lock A simple way to prevent your lock from freezing is by placing a magnet over the keyhole. Most magnets will work as long as it is large enough to cover the keyhole completely. All you need to do is place the magnet over the lock when you leave your car. After you get in your car, simply toss the magnet in your pocket or purse for later use. Apply some WD-40 WD-40 is very effective at keeping your car door lock lubricated and frost-free. Simply spray a little into the lock and it should prevent ice and frost
buildup for several days. While you’re at it, you may want to spray a little into the lock of your trunk as well. Unlocking a frozen car door lock Okay. Let’s say you don’t have a magnet or WD40 handy and your car door lock is now frozen… what do you do? There are actually a few quick remedies you can try, one or more of which can be effective enough that you won’t need to call a professional locksmith. Sanitize your key Hand sanitizers have a high alcohol content, which not only prevents it from freezing, but enables it to thaw ice as well. Squirt a little bit of the gel on your key, make sure it covers both sides well, and it should unlock your stuck door lock after a few turns. Lube up your key Petroleum jelly is an effective lubricant that will enable you to turn the key in the lock easily. This may take a bit longer to do than if you use hand sanitizer, but it will work most of the time. Simply coat your key lightly with a small dab of petroleum jelly and turn it in the lock gently in both directions.

Heat up your key Simply heating up your key with a lighter could be enough to unstick a stuck lock. If the lock is completely frozen, you may have to heat your key more than once. As with all other methods, don’t rush it, and turn the key in both directions slowly. You should be able to get the ice melted in a few minutes. Keep de-icing spray handy Commercially-available de-icing spray is even more effective than the solutions mentioned above. Of course, having it tucked away in the glove compartment of a frozen car wouldn’t do you much good, so make sure to have an extra bottle handy at home or in your office desk as well. Breath in…and out In the worst-case scenario wherein, you don’t have any of the solutions mentioned above, your breath could be all you need to thaw out your car door lock. Simply cup your hands around the lock and blow into it for a few minutes. It may be necessary to do this more than once, but your lock should thaw after a while.
